- 0:00Hey everybody, it's your old pal Steve
- 0:01Moore here, owner of Runore, this
- 0:03fabulous brick and mortar running shop
- 0:04located in Westminster, Maryland. Today
- 0:07we got a lot to talk about about the new
- 0:09Ultra Escalante 5. There is so much to
- 0:12dig into, but before I get too far
- 0:13along, if you haven't already, like and
- 0:15subscribe to our channel. It's a great
- 0:17way to stay uptodate on all running
- 0:18retail from an industry expert,
- 0:24[music]
- 0:28the Ultra Escalante 5. Okay, so first
- 0:31off, the Escalante was such a cool shoe
- 0:34when it first came out. Like I would say
- 0:36of all of the Ultra shoes that we
- 0:37carried that had the biggest increase of
- 0:40new customers coming in, it was the
- 0:41Escalante. Like going back to when it
- 0:44first came out, we had seen this
- 0:46minimalist movement and then we saw the
- 0:48big Hoka coming into the market where
- 0:50everybody started to go big and then
- 0:51Ultra went super minimal with the
- 0:53Escalante and obviously as they have
- 0:55changed their lineup over the years.
- 0:58Some of the things that made Altra Ultra
- 1:00has changed things like zero drop and
- 1:02how the widths were done. But there's
- 1:04something that's been tried and true
- 1:06with the Escalante all these years is
- 1:07like we are a minimal zero drop nice
- 1:11rounded foot shape. That's where the
- 1:13Escalante has stood in their lineup. And
- 1:15technically there's been stuff that's a
- 1:16little bit lower to the ground. The
- 1:17Solstice is just a pinch lower. The
- 1:20Escalante Racer was just a pinch lower,
- 1:22but for like all intents of purposes,
- 1:24for a minimal road shoe from Ultra, this
- 1:26was the bee's knee. So when people would
- 1:28come in here and say, "I wish I could
- 1:30just be barefoot all the time." This is
- 1:32the shoe that we pull. And so it's been
- 1:33exciting to see how this shoe has kind
- 1:35of pivoted over the years while still
- 1:37trying to keep itself true. And there's
- 1:38a lot of changes from four to five that
- 1:41almost to me kind of classifies the shoe
- 1:43differently than how it used to be. So
- 1:45the first big update we're going to talk
- 1:47about is the midsole update. As I
- 1:48mentioned, the first Escalante was the
- 1:50first one that introduced like a really
- 1:52lively ego midsole. That was the first
- 1:53time we saw that charged rubber bouncy
- 1:56shoe. So it was always confusing to
- 1:58people. Not confusing in a bad way, but
- 2:00like this shoe shouldn't feel as bouncy
- 2:03and lively and fun and even cushioned as
- 2:05it is for a shoe that is only 44 or 24
- 2:08mm tall. But that like was a super
- 2:11revolutionary bouncy midsole that they
- 2:13use. So now we have a new CM EVA. So
- 2:17it's a compression molded EVA version of
- 2:20the Ego. So it's different than what we
- 2:22had in version 4. It actually underfoot
- 2:24it feels more cushioned. And I was doing
- 2:26a lot of back and forth, checking specs,
- 2:28running around, doing all the stuff to
- 2:29compare my old Escalantes and new
- 2:31Escalantes, and they're both 24 mm.
- 2:34They're both a lot of ways they look so
- 2:36similar, but they actually feel quite
- 2:38different under foot. When I popped
- 2:40these two go, I was running around, I
- 2:42did not feel like I was wearing an
- 2:43Escalante in the version 5. It felt
- 2:45closer, quite frankly, to like a baby
- 2:48torrent, which is a max cushion zero
- 2:50drop shoe from Ultra. So like I felt so
- 2:52much more cushion underfoot from the
- 2:54Escalante. So, some people that are
- 2:56like, I don't want to feel the ground
- 2:57anymore, you're going to feel a little
- 3:00bit different in way this cushion feels
- 3:01under foot. I actually really felt it
- 3:03through the midfoot and forefoot of this
- 3:05shoe. Like, in fact, I was like, is this
- 3:06even still feel zero drop? Because it
- 3:08just felt like it filled in so much more
- 3:10space than I was accustomed to in old
- 3:12Escalantes, especially if you go back to
- 3:14like the OG Escalante where it really
- 3:16felt like there was nothing under foot.
- 3:18This shoe in all intents and purposes, I
- 3:20I actually said this like on version
- 3:22three of the Escalante, like it now
- 3:24feels more like a shoe than I was used
- 3:26to. So keep that in mind if you are that
- 3:28like I don't want nothing under my foot.
- 3:31You're going to feel like you have a
- 3:32shoe on now. And the weight has changed.
- 3:34Even though the same stack height, it is
- 3:36now at half ounce heavier. So we're on
- 3:39my size 12. This is almost an 11 oz shoe
- 3:42now. And so that's a big difference from
- 3:44where we used to be. I was This was a 10
- 3:461/2. And even this was heavier than what
- 3:48we had been accustomed to on Escalantes.
- 3:50So now this almost feels, I hate to say
- 3:53more casual, more like a shoe, but
- 3:54that's where this shoe lies. And what do
- 3:56you do if you're that ride or die
- 3:57Escalante person? It's like, well, I
- 3:59don't want that. They've now changed it
- 4:01and there is no Escalante racer anymore.
- 4:03So if you were like, okay, well, I'll
- 4:05just get the lighter down 2 mm less
- 4:07version of the Racer. That is now gone.
- 4:10What they've done, and just you can kind
- 4:11of see just like immediately go, ah,
- 4:13this is the Vanish Pulse. So, this now
- 4:16replaces what the racer was. So, if you
- 4:18are somebody who's like, I want to run
- 4:20in an Escalante that feels super low to
- 4:23the ground, that has so little weight to
- 4:24it, that still feels like an old school
- 4:27fasty, you know, escalante used to be.
- 4:29That's where this comes into place.
- 4:30Like, I think in their head that almost
- 4:32becomes, I hate saying a casual shoe,
- 4:34but I think this almost even some of the
- 4:36colors that we've seen on this becomes
- 4:38something that people can putts around.
- 4:40Obviously, still run in it, but it is a
- 4:42little bit heavier. It just feels a
- 4:44pinch different. But if you still want
- 4:46that escalante experience, that's where
- 4:48the Pulse comes in. Now, this becomes
- 4:50your lowest level, lowest cushion, super
- 4:53fast, super minimal rounded to toe box
- 4:56shoe from Ultra in the Escalante family.
- 4:58So, while it doesn't have Escalante in
- 5:00the name, for all intents of purposes,
- 5:02this becomes your Lecalante racer and
- 5:04your check down from what now is your
- 5:06Escalante 5. So, if I was kind of making
- 5:08like a little Escalante sandwich, this
- 5:11is how I would do it. You have your
- 5:13higher heaviest one, your old one, and
- 5:16now your new guy down here the on the on
- 5:17the pulse on the bottom here. I hope
- 5:19that kind of helps as far as like your
- 5:21weight and like how bouncy they are and
- 5:24just how like minimal they kind of are.
- 5:26Yeah, that's how I would do that. Came
- 5:28up with that on the fly. Anyway, I hope
- 5:30that kind of helps answer some questions
- 5:31because there is some great things that
- 5:33I like about this shoe. It is so
- 5:34comfortable. Like I can definitely see
- 5:36me putting around town in this shoe. I
- 5:38think the upgraded cushion to the
- 5:39forefoot is a real nice benefit. It is
- 5:4210 bucks more, but still at $140,
- 5:44whether you're wearing this casual or
- 5:45this is your everyday runner shoe or
- 5:47that stylish shoe that's a zero drop, I
- 5:50think they did a nice job at $140 of
- 5:52giving you tremendous value in this
- 5:53shoe. I think they did a good job on the
- 5:55durability. They're just using more
- 5:57durable materials in this. These shoes
- 5:58are just lasting a little bit longer.
- 6:00So, Ultra's done a good job of like
- 6:01making improvements and adding value
- 6:03without changing everything to it and
- 6:05making it like a lower tiered shoe. So,
- 6:07there you have it. The Escalante 5. If
