  1. 0:00leadership is perhaps one of the most
  2. 0:02misunderstood subjects in business
  3. 0:05leadership has nothing to do with rank
  4. 0:08I know many people who sit at the
  5. 0:11highest levels of an organization
  6. 0:13who are not leaders
  7. 0:16we do as they tell us because they have
  8. 0:18authority over us
  9. 0:20but we do not trust them and we do not
  10. 0:22follow them
  11. 0:25I also know people at low levels of
  12. 0:27organizations that have no formal
  13. 0:29Authority
  14. 0:31but they've made a choice the choice to
  15. 0:33look after the person to the left of
  16. 0:35them the choice to look after the person
  17. 0:37to the right of them and we would trust
  18. 0:39them and follow them anywhere
  19. 0:42leadership is the awesome responsibility
  20. 0:45to see those around us rise
  21. 0:49you every one of us can choose to be the
  22. 0:52leader we wish we had
  23. 0:55we lead our teams and we can lead our
  24. 0:57clients when we decide that we will do
  25. 1:00everything in our power to see them rise
  26. 1:03to see them achieve their Ambitions and
  27. 1:05their dreams and this is what servant
  28. 1:08leadership means I serve your dream
  29. 1:11rather than you serve my bottom line
  30. 1:15and it's totally fine to have financial
  31. 1:18goals it's totally fine to have metrics
  32. 1:21because that becomes the proof of value
  33. 1:23that somebody wants to give you their
  34. 1:25money because they believe in you it is
  35. 1:28it is proof positive
  36. 1:30but uh uh the best leaders I know
  37. 1:35are students of leadership there's no
  38. 1:38such thing as an expert leader it
  39. 1:39doesn't exist like there's no such thing
  40. 1:41as an expert parent it doesn't exist
  41. 1:44right we are students of leadership and
  42. 1:47even the most
  43. 1:49senior leaders
  44. 1:51constantly are reading books
  45. 1:53reading articles watching talks having
  46. 1:56conversations all the time about
  47. 1:58leadership they're always in learning
  48. 2:00mode
  49. 2:01and I think for anyone who wants to be a
  50. 2:04leader uh you have to choose to be a
  51. 2:06student of the subject like anything if
  52. 2:08you want to be good at something you
  53. 2:09have to study it and the most
  54. 2:13ignored characteristic of leadership you
  55. 2:16know we talk about vision and Charisma
  56. 2:18yes these are important but I've known
  57. 2:21some wonderful leaders who don't have
  58. 2:24huge world-changing vision
  59. 2:25I've known some wonderful leaders that
  60. 2:28are quiet and sit in the corner but they
  61. 2:31all have courage
  62. 2:34the courage to advance a vision the
  63. 2:37courage to ignore the short-term ups and
  64. 2:39downs of the business the courage to
  65. 2:42take risks on people the courage to
  66. 2:45believe in people
  67. 2:47the courage to speak truth to power the
  68. 2:50courage to do the right thing and have
  69. 2:52integrity I think courage is a very
  70. 2:54undervalued characteristic of leadership
