  2. 0:13I've heard from feminists my whole life
  3. 0:16that men need to know that they only
  4. 0:18need to learn that no means no I'm sorry
  5. 0:22women need to learn that no means no
  6. 0:25women need to learn to say no when they
  7. 0:29mean it and not say no when they don't
  8. 0:32mean it yeah we raise them to send these
  9. 0:35mixed messages and there is confusion to
  10. 0:37come from that but I'm not saying that
  11. 0:39justifies anybody taking advantage
  12. 0:41somebody I just think that we need a
  13. 0:44much more nuanced understanding of how
  14. 0:45human beings really communicate with
  15. 0:48each other about sex and and we're never
  16. 0:50ever going to get that from feminist
  17. 0:53ideologues
  18. 0:55Paul when we went out to dinner last
  19. 0:58night before and unless Liz asked me I
  20. 1:00she asked me why I was making this
  21. 1:02documentary er how I came to this issue
  22. 1:05and everything and so you know my my
  23. 1:09experience was that I was researching
  24. 1:11rape culture and then how I stumbled
  25. 1:14across a voice for men was I was because
  26. 1:17I was googling rape culture and a voice
  27. 1:19for men was the first time that I saw a
  28. 1:21different perspective about the whole
  29. 1:23rape culture terminology and idea and
  30. 1:28Liz asked me well what did it say and I
  31. 1:31was I was racking my brain trying to
  32. 1:33remember and I couldn't remember what
  33. 1:35article it was so this morning I
  34. 1:36actually went on a voice for men search
  35. 1:38rape culture to try to find the article
  36. 1:40I originally saw so the first article I
  37. 1:42saw on a boys for men was I think it was
  38. 1:46called the ugly side of rate or the
  39. 1:50unspoken the unspoken side of rape so
  40. 1:54that was the first article I saw on a
  41. 1:56boy Sherman and where did you get an
  42. 1:58introduction not an easy one to read for
  43. 2:04your first introduction but it made me
  44. 2:07want to read more and some something
  45. 2:10about that article even though at first
  46. 2:12coming from you know a feminist ideology
  47. 2:16and reading that article really puts you
  48. 2:18off and kind of freaks you out who are
  49. 2:20these people
  50. 2:21but there must have been some truth to
  51. 2:24it because in an interested that is one
  52. 2:28of my most highly demonized pieces and I
  53. 2:32understand why I mean it is some some
  54. 2:35very acidic satire and it is addressing
  55. 2:40some very brutal realities that are not
  56. 2:42comfortable for most people to address
  57. 2:45and it's not like I'm putting on kick
  58. 2:47gloves to do it
  59. 2:50so I understand why anybody looks at
  60. 2:52that and says oh my god I'm really
  61. 2:53surprised to hear that was your first a
  62. 2:55BFM are cool
  63. 2:572600 articles on the side and you've got
  64. 2:59to pick that one
  65. 3:00[Music]
  66. 3:02but whatever it led you to read another
  67. 3:05one so do you still stand behind that
  68. 3:08article yes I do I stand behind it 100%
  69. 3:12and I
  70. 3:15as a vehicle to explain something I
  71. 3:19think probably the the most
  72. 3:22controversial aspect of that article was
  73. 3:25and I talked about women that were
  74. 3:28begging to be raped
  75. 3:29[Music]
  76. 3:31but what I'm pointing at here is a
  77. 3:33double standard
  78. 3:34if either
  79. 3:37leave my keys in my car and leave it
  80. 3:40running in the parking lot of a grocery
  81. 3:43store and go in and shop around for an
  82. 3:45hour with anybody find fault with
  83. 3:48somebody saying you were begging to get
  84. 3:51your car stolen with the insurance
  85. 3:54company say you were negligent we're not
  86. 3:57going to pay for this step because
  87. 3:59you're responsible for what you did I
  88. 4:02would argue that in many circumstances
  89. 4:05from securing our home to
  90. 4:07self-protection to a lot of different
  91. 4:09ways that we are responsible for
  92. 4:12protecting ourselves in life that we are
  93. 4:14quick to put the onus on people to take
  94. 4:17care of themselves and make responsible
  95. 4:18decisions except where it concerns
  96. 4:21sexual assault then there's no
  97. 4:23responsibility ever when the person that
  98. 4:26happens to so if a woman goes to a bar
  99. 4:29and gets plastered with a man she just
  100. 4:32met and leaves all of her friends behind
  101. 4:35and leaves in a car she's never been in
  102. 4:37before with somebody she has no
  103. 4:39knowledge of never not telling anybody
  104. 4:41where she's going she's backing for
  105. 4:44problems she is begging for problems
  106. 4:47does that mean that the rapist is
  107. 4:49justified no does it mean that it's her
  108. 4:53fault that she got raped no it doesn't
  109. 4:57mean that but if we live in a society
  110. 4:59that can't tell people to take
  111. 5:03responsibility for making good judgments
  112. 5:05and taking care of themselves and making
  113. 5:07good sound decisions then we're setting
  114. 5:10them up for these kinds of problems we
  115. 5:12are trying to teach them that
  116. 5:14matter what happens the world is
  117. 5:16supposed to fall into place for you and
  118. 5:18we don't live in that world
  119. 5:19that's a fantasy world we're supposed to
  120. 5:22make good sound decisions to protect
  121. 5:24ourselves and that is the spirit that
  122. 5:28that article was written in I'm
  123. 5:34feel like I'm safe to say there's a few
  124. 5:35people that didn't get my point
  125. 5:38[Music]
  126. 5:43[Music]
