- 0:08My name is Ali Flores and I'm a product
- 0:10manager at Alexa.
- 0:11My name is Dr. Chelsea Haupt, I work at
- 0:13the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence
- 0:15and I work on an AI-powered academic
- 0:17search engine.
- 0:21All around you computers are making
- 0:23decisions and those decisions affect
- 0:26your daily life.
- 0:27When you do an internet search, or scroll
- 0:30through your news feed
- 0:31computers decide what you see.
- 0:34Computers can already recognize your face
- 0:37and understand your voice.
- 0:38And soon they'll be driving cars,
- 0:40and detecting diseases even better than humans.
- 0:44So, how is any of this possible?
- 0:46You may have heard
- 0:48about something called AI,
- 0:50or artificial intelligence, true artificial intelligence is decades away
- 0:56there's a type of AI called
- 0:58machine learning that is here today.
- 1:00It's a type of AI you probably interact
- 1:02with every day
- 1:03without even knowing it.
- 1:06And it has the opportunity to help us
- 1:08tackle some of the world's biggest challenges.
- 1:12Machine learning is how computers
- 1:14recognize patterns,
- 1:16and make decisions without being
- 1:19explicitly programmed.
- 1:21What's so exciting is that it's a
- 1:23completely different way
- 1:25to program a computer than what we've
- 1:28ever done before.
- 1:31With machine learning, instead of
- 1:33programming a computer
- 1:34step-by-step, you can program a computer
- 1:37to learn
- 1:38just like you learn through trial and error,
- 1:41and lots of practice.
- 1:44Learning comes from experience,
- 1:45and that's true for machine learning too.
- 1:48In this case, experience means lots and lots of data.
- 1:54Machine learning can take in any kind of data:
- 1:57images, video, audio, or text
- 2:01and begin to recognize patterns in that data
- 2:06once it learns to recognize patterns in
- 2:08the data it can also learn to make
- 2:10predictions based on those patterns,
- 2:13like noticing the difference between an image of a car
- 2:16and an image of a bicycle.
- 2:20AI and machine learning are playing a
- 2:22bigger and bigger role
- 2:24in society at large
- 2:26and shaping all of our futures.
- 2:29That's why it's so important to learn
- 2:31how it works
- 2:32with some hands-on experience.
- 2:36Remember AI is like any tool.
- 2:39First you get the knowledge,
- 2:41then you get the power
