What is Freedom For? - One Piece Philosophy (Analysis) — Transcript

- 0:00one of the fundamental conflicts in one
- 0:02piece is the dual-sided coin of freedom
- 0:04and Authority a conflict of Epic
- 0:07Proportions manifesting in Luffy and emu
- 0:11Luffy symbolizing the Luminous Beacon of
- 0:13freedom is just opposed by emu the
- 0:16absolute force of draconian Authority it
- 0:19is a clash between a corrupt
- 0:21establishment and the free pirate but
- 0:24this on its own in my opinion doesn't
- 0:27tell you the full story not with without
- 0:30first understanding what Freedom really
- 0:32is in society there is an almost
- 0:35infinite number of definitions for the
- 0:37word freedom and thus by extension
- 0:41Authority especially in America where
- 0:43most of my viewers reside talk to 100
- 0:46different Americans and you will get 100
- 0:49different results as to what freedom is
- 0:51both conservatives and leftists will
- 0:53tell you the opposing side is against
- 0:55freedom for different reasons both sides
- 0:58will claim that they are fighting
- 0:59against The Establishment and doing what
- 1:01is ultimately best for the Common Man a
- 1:04leftist may say that our long being
- 1:06enslaved shows how one piece is against
- 1:08the slavery of minorities or just in
- 1:11general how the government tries to
- 1:12suppress the minority group of people
- 1:14trying to rise up thus demonstrating
- 1:17that the ruling white people are bad and
- 1:19a conservative May point out how arlong
- 1:21is somewhat written like a sort of black
- 1:24supremacist this is made more clear in
- 1:26the live action as arlong seems to have
- 1:28some dialogue similar to it humans have
- 1:32ruled the Seas for far too long looking
- 1:36down from their I Towers towers built on
- 1:40the backs of fishmen as far as I'm
- 1:42concerned both sides are really just
- 1:45seeing the things that they want to be
- 1:46seen But lurking between the tapestry of
- 1:49interconnected and opposing ideas I
- 1:52think that there's a message that we can
- 1:54all take away from one piece that is far
- 1:56more nuanced Universal and Powerful
- 1:59compared to how most people like to take
- 2:00it it rises Beyond these partisan
- 2:03interpretations and beckons us to think
- 2:05deeper about the implications of our
- 2:08beliefs to begin our analysis we need to
- 2:11First establish that one piece isn't a
- 2:13straightforward story of pirates good
- 2:16Marines bad in the first few episodes we
- 2:19see a good pirate in Luffy a bad pirate
- 2:22in alvida and a good Marine in Kobe and
- 2:25a bad Marine in ax hand Morgan the
- 2:29series SE seems perfectly split down the
- 2:31middle a complete bifurcation that
- 2:34presents a distinct Duality on both
- 2:36sides most of the conflicts the straw
- 2:39hats encounter are due to missteps with
- 2:41other Pirates this is showing us that
- 2:44there are bad pirates but we know that
- 2:47the World At Large is under the corrupt
- 2:49regime of the world government but we
- 2:51also know that there will likely be some
- 2:53marines that will help Luffy take it
- 2:55down this shows us the flip side it
- 2:57shows us how there are good and bad
- 2:59members on the side of
- 3:01authority I don't necessarily think that
- 3:04one piece is about the balance between
- 3:05freedom and Authority at least in the
- 3:08aoral way it's commonly understood but
- 3:10rather it is an acknowledgement of
- 3:12objective Excellence wherever you are
- 3:15and how that should be strived for it
- 3:17goes beyond labels and tells you to be a
- 3:19good person wherever you find yourself
- 3:22situated you can say that one piece is
- 3:24against rich people but people like Sabo
- 3:26and Viv exist you can say that one piece
- 3:29is Pro pirate and anti-authority but
- 3:32then you have people like GARP who are
- 3:34good characters upholding Authority and
- 3:37on the flip side we have people like
- 3:38crocodile Moria and basically every
- 3:41antagonist luff is fought who represents
- 3:43a bad pirate the series in its depth
- 3:47defies simplistic categorizations and
- 3:49urges us to strive for excellence
- 3:52irrespective of our
- 3:53Circumstance the consistent through line
- 3:56is that one piece doesn't care about
- 3:57your label and is basically just an
- 3:59advocate for you not being a bad person
- 4:02slavery is wrong whether it is done by
- 4:05humans or by fishmen abusing power is
- 4:08wrong whether it is done by Marines or
- 4:10Pirates one piece isn't saying that
- 4:13piracy is great or that absolute Justice
- 4:16is the ideal one piece correctly
- 4:18identifies that people have different
- 4:20inclinations and have different desires
- 4:23it astutely recognizes that individuals
- 4:26with varying inclinations strive for
- 4:29different goals
- 4:30moreover one piece recognizes the
- 4:32diversity concomitant to different
- 4:34societies run by different groups of
- 4:36people hereditary monarchy and democracy
- 4:39are two opposing ways to run a country
- 4:42yet both are shown in negative and
- 4:44positive lights Vivi and Mos both beefed
- 4:49their positions through Birthright but
- 4:51so did the celestial dragons drum Island
- 4:54elected Dalton to be their leader
- 4:56democratically but Crocodile by inciting
- 4:59a civil War wanted to turn the people
- 5:01against the king and thus in a way use
- 5:04the rule of the people to commence a
- 5:06deleterious course of
- 5:08events this idea of labels and status
- 5:11not really mattering was right there in
- 5:13front of us in Shell toown when Zoro was
- 5:16hanging from his cross he states that he
- 5:18doesn't care what people think about him
- 5:21because he knows that what he did was
- 5:23good and thus he doesn't even have one
- 5:26iota of regret this is probably why Zoro
- 5:29is is so easily able to switch between
- 5:31being a pirate Hunter and being a pirate
- 5:34proper the labels don't mean anything to
- 5:37him he just does what he thinks is right
- 5:39in order to get what he wants while
- 5:41protecting those against the morally
- 5:43bankrupt forces of the world even within
- 5:46the world government within the
- 5:48celestial dragons there are a handful of
- 5:51token good guys like the donkey Hotes
- 5:54aside from of course doflamingo this
- 5:57shows that at every juncture of One
- 5:59Piece there lies pockets of either
- 6:01positive or negative morality this
- 6:04accentuates the ultimate negligence of
- 6:06labels within the tapestry of the one
- 6:08piece world all of this ties into the
- 6:11famous speech by do flamingo in Marine
- 6:13Ford I think it's worth quoting in full
- 6:16Pirates are evil Marines are righteous
- 6:20these terms have always changed
- 6:21throughout the course of history kids
- 6:23who have never seen peace and kids who
- 6:26have never seen War have different
- 6:27values those who stand at the top
- 6:30determine what's wrong and what's right
- 6:33this very place is a neutral ground
- 6:36justice will prevail you say of course
- 6:38it will those who win the war become the
- 6:43Justice history is written by The
- 6:45Victors whoever is in charge determines
- 6:48for society what is right and wrong this
- 6:51isn't to say that there is no objective
- 6:53right and wrong it is to say that what
- 6:56Society tends to think is moral is Lar L
- 6:59justified by whatever is legal and
- 7:02illegal and whatever is promoted and
- 7:04vilified by the whims of those who run
- 7:06Society doof Flamingo himself is someone
- 7:09who took Power by force and exalted
- 7:11himself as the king the kuki were once
- 7:14beloved but after kaido took over
- 7:17children were taught that the kuki were
- 7:19enemies while the adults old enough to
- 7:21remember the truth were forced to remain
- 7:23quiet given a long enough hypothetical
- 7:25time period nobody would know the truth
- 7:28and C would be seen as the irrefutable
- 7:30king of wano One Piece isn't concerned
- 7:34about your particular label it is
- 7:35concerned about who you are as a human
- 7:38being King pirate Marine World
- 7:42Government they all have good and bad
- 7:45individuals within their factions some
- 7:48people have been given more of a right
- 7:50to disseminate their truth onto the
- 7:52population but one piece constantly
- 7:54highlights the fact that what is
- 7:56considered right and just isn't
- 7:58determined by who who was in power but
- 8:00rather a properly adjusted moral
- 8:03conscience so given the fact that many
- 8:05countries in one piece are run by a
- 8:07monarch this highlights the fact that
- 8:09power and authority are necessary and
- 8:12ought to be bestowed on those virtuous
- 8:15enough to properly lead there's a Bible
- 8:17verse that relates to this that's pretty
- 8:19relevant it says that it is easier for a
- 8:22camel to go through the eye of a needle
- 8:24than for a rich man to enter the kingdom
- 8:26of God now whether you believe in heaven
- 8:28or hell or God is irrelevant the idea is
- 8:32still Universal influence and affluence
- 8:35bere the presence of perfected virtue
- 8:38fans the Flames of our lower
- 8:40inclinations and we'll be talking more
- 8:42about this perfected virtue later in the
- 8:44video but that aside if someone without
- 8:47virtue is in power one piece highlights
- 8:50that it is up to those few free Souls
- 8:52who possess such bravery and moral
- 8:54character to revolt against the system
- 8:57to revolt against those with status in
- 9:00order to give everyone else a chance of
- 9:02Freedom one piece constantly teaches
- 9:05that just because someone has Authority
- 9:07doesn't necessarily mean that we have to
- 9:09dogmatically obey them following a code
- 9:12of justice just because an authority
- 9:14told you to do so doesn't mean it's
- 9:17right Oda constantly pushes the idea
- 9:20that characters ought to think for
- 9:21themselves and this is ostensibly close
- 9:24in line with existentialist philosophy
- 9:26the straw hats live how they want to
- 9:28live and they do what they want to do
- 9:30they have no set moral code they don't
- 9:33belong to an authority and they are not
- 9:35beholden to the constraints of any
- 9:37larger faction they operate on their own
- 9:40whims if they feel like helping someone
- 9:43it is not because of altruism or some
- 9:45kind of Hero's code but because they
- 9:47just so happen to feel like it in the
- 9:49case of wapple it's the other way around
- 9:52Luffy punched him because he thought he
- 9:54was annoying it just so happened that
- 9:56wapple was also the antagonist and on
- 9:58the other hand sometimes they choose to
- 10:01help people merely because some
- 10:03character gave Luffy food at some point
- 10:06despite all of this I don't really
- 10:08believe that one piece espouses a truly
- 10:10existentialist philosophy to give you a
- 10:13brief summary of what existentialist
- 10:14philosophy is something that will just
- 10:17work for this video existentialism is a
- 10:20philosophy coined by people like John
- 10:22Paul sart and retroactively attributed
- 10:24to people like n it believes that the
- 10:27goal of life is to determine for
- 10:29yourself what you deem is good and
- 10:31pursue that the existentialist Mantra
- 10:35existence perceives Essence encapsulates
- 10:37this philosophy it means that we do not
- 10:40have a given essence or purpose in our
- 10:42lives it asserts then that what defines
- 10:45us what gives us our Essence is our
- 10:48choices morals actions and a meaning we
- 10:52personally ascribe onto them I don't
- 10:55actually believe that this is what one
- 10:56piece is saying or if it is that's only
- 10:59partly the case I think this is a rather
- 11:02surface level and rudimentary analysis
- 11:04of One Piece One Piece constantly
- 11:07critiques the idea of unfettered freedom
- 11:10primarily through Blackbeard with this
- 11:12in mind I interpret freedom in one piece
- 11:15as being your ability to choose your own
- 11:18path of flourishing with respect to what
- 11:20is right and wrong it presents the idea
- 11:23that udonia or the condition of human
- 11:26flourishing can be achieved at any wi
- 11:28multi multitude of factions within
- 11:30Society if you want to be a pirate and
- 11:33compete do that if you want to be a
- 11:35marine do that if you want to be a
- 11:38general citizen do that one piece
- 11:41celebrates the validity of diverse paths
- 11:44and shows how they are all paths to
- 11:46happiness for different people of
- 11:48different callings just be a pirate who
- 11:50competes against other Pirates and not
- 11:53one who harms the Innocents because that
- 11:55would violate the way that they want to
- 11:57flourish one p emphatically underscores
- 12:00the idea that true Freedom hinges on
- 12:03pursuing one's aspirations without
- 12:05causing harm to the Innocents the type
- 12:07of philosophy that one piece espouses is
- 12:10one that acknowledges that we exist for
- 12:12the beneficence of other people kings
- 12:14are given Authority with the assumption
- 12:16that they will ensure the largest amount
- 12:18of benefit for the most number of people
- 12:21one piece acknowledges that there is
- 12:23power that exists and given that fact it
- 12:26should be good people who are in power
- 12:28ruler should be the torchbearers of
- 12:30virtue leading Society to better places
- 12:33with each step what is good for the
- 12:35people will provide the optimal way for
- 12:37everyone to reach their own personal
- 12:39fulfillment and happiness this holds
- 12:42true once again whether you choose the
- 12:45path of a marine pirate or an ordinary
- 12:48citizen this may sound like I'm saying
- 12:51that one piece Echoes the Contemporary
- 12:53Mantra of do whatever you want as long
- 12:55as it doesn't hurt other people but that
- 12:58is not only logically impossible it is
- 13:02again a water down explanation of what
- 13:04one piece is actually saying first of
- 13:07all I find it hard to believe that
- 13:09anyone actually believes that Mantra I
- 13:12hope that we are all against slavery and
- 13:14believe that it should be fought against
- 13:17even if you wouldn't go out of your way
- 13:18to physically fight against it you
- 13:21probably still would wave a magical wand
- 13:23to remove it or press a magical slavery
- 13:26eraser button if given the chance
- 13:29even though if you're living in the
- 13:30Western World at least it has no impact
- 13:33on you evil exists in the world should
- 13:36we not care about it even if it doesn't
- 13:38directly impact us I hope so assuming
- 13:42you would press this button that means
- 13:44you care about things even when they
- 13:45don't directly impact you secondly we
- 13:49can't actually separate ourselves from
- 13:51the world the stoic philosopher Marcus
- 13:53aelius insightfully observed that what
- 13:55is bad for the individual is bad for
- 13:58society
- 13:59and thus vice versa is also the truth he
- 14:02said what is not good for the Beehive
- 14:05cannot be good for the bees therefore
- 14:08what is good for the bees has to be good
- 14:10for the Beehive if we damage our
- 14:12community we ultimately damage ourselves
- 14:16Justice then is our ability to benefit
- 14:19the hive the flourishing of the bee is
- 14:22intrinsically linked to the obligations
- 14:23he has to The Hive individual and
- 14:26communal Prosperity are inter twined
- 14:29that's the problem with existentialism
- 14:31in general it assumes we are all
- 14:33atomized individuals but no our
- 14:37flourishing ought to in part be with the
- 14:40acknowledgement of our duties to other
- 14:42people that I think May more accurately
- 14:46convey what one piece is saying in its
- 14:48complete
- 14:49analysis I think this quote accurately
- 14:51represents what one piece's freedom is
- 14:53about Pope John Paul II said Freedom
- 14:57consists not in doing what we like but
- 14:59in having the right to do what we ought
- 15:02Freedom opens you up to living the kind
- 15:04of virtuous life of your calling freedom
- 15:07is not merely the unrestricted ability
- 15:09to pursue personal desires but rather
- 15:12signifies the privilege to embark on The
- 15:14Virtuous path aligned to one's true
- 15:16calling if you strive for riches use
- 15:19your money not abusively or
- 15:21ostentatiously but altruistically if you
- 15:24are to live a quiet life do so
- 15:26graciously if you are to be competitive
- 15:29compartmentalize that drive towards
- 15:31other similarly competitive people and
- 15:33try to flourish there Channel your
- 15:35competitive Spirit towards others who
- 15:37share your ambition Foster an
- 15:39environment where all can flourish in
- 15:41their own distinctive way that is really
- 15:45the truest form of Freedom the freedom
- 15:47for everyone to flourish in their own
- 15:50way the freedom for each individual to
- 15:53thrive according to their unique path to
- 15:56elaborate on what I said about Pirates
- 15:58notice how pirates live by their own
- 16:00terms and fight the way they want in
- 16:02Luffy's fight against katak Curry the
- 16:05siblings cheat and this results in kak
- 16:07curry dealing a major blow against Luffy
- 16:10but Luffy doesn't complain he knows that
- 16:13scheming and cheating is fair game in a
- 16:16battle of pirates in the world of
- 16:18pirates everyone is pushing to the top
- 16:21and the weak die off even the word
- 16:23hockey literally means ambition and
- 16:26aspiration with the chief among all
- 16:28Hockey being conquerors hockey literally
- 16:31the ambition to conquer this is in stark
- 16:34contrast to the world of the land as
- 16:36your status Birthright Etc don't mean
- 16:40anything all that matters is your own
- 16:43ability your own will and your own Merit
- 16:47the Pirates sign up for this world and
- 16:49they don't complain about it look at how
- 16:52in the foxy Arc the way Zoro responds to
- 16:55Chopper Chopper after temporarily being
- 16:58put on Foxy's crew complains that he
- 17:01only wanted to be on Luffy's crew but
- 17:03Zoro stoically and sharply Clips his
- 17:06wings of discontent Zoro explains to him
- 17:08that he chose this life he accepted the
- 17:11risks concomitant to such as he joined
- 17:13the crew the world of piracy is
- 17:16apathetic no one is going to show you
- 17:18any
- 17:19sympathy now before you get ahead of
- 17:21yourself and believe that in one piece
- 17:24the world of pirates is aoral I will
- 17:26argue that in the narrative itself there
- 17:29is still clearly a correct and incorrect
- 17:31way to do things and that is clearly
- 17:34demonstrated in the contrast between
- 17:35Luffy and
- 17:37Blackbeard this is seen in how he
- 17:39orchestrated Marine Ford killed
- 17:41Whitebeard and stole his fruit on the
- 17:44other hand Luffy wants to play fairly
- 17:46and earn his progress most notable
- 17:49examples being when he chose not to take
- 17:51advantage of kak Curry's fatigue in
- 17:53their fight and when he demanded not to
- 17:55know the secrets of the world from rley
- 17:57two of defense Blackbeard most certainly
- 17:59would have taken advantage of Blackbeard
- 18:02also tends to see things as a means to
- 18:04an end his crew is full of tools
- 18:07designed to give him the best chance of
- 18:09being py King Luffy's crew is made of
- 18:12people he just so happened to like Luffy
- 18:15enjoys the journey and Adventure towards
- 18:17becoming pirate king Blackbeard only
- 18:20cares about the destination so even
- 18:22though the Pirates don't seem to be
- 18:24bothered by immoral Behavior like the
- 18:26common man would be oh is still
- 18:29communicating the idea that there is a
- 18:31right and wrong way to even be a pirate
- 18:34in one piece the strong are the rightful
- 18:36rulers at the top who use their power
- 18:38magnanimously for the good of the world
- 18:41everyone choosing how they want to live
- 18:43without the presence of virtue results
- 18:46in moral Anarchy where everyone's
- 18:48capricious desires V to claim their spot
- 18:50at the top it is for this reason that
- 18:53Oda portrays the lawlessness of piracy
- 18:55as being separated from the lawful
- 18:57regular life in wano Luffy and Zoro are
- 19:01extremely upset at the food not being
- 19:03shared this is because the civilians are
- 19:06not Pirates and they are not vying for a
- 19:08place at the top thus subjecting them to
- 19:11unfair punishment is immoral when the
- 19:14competitive world of pirates harms the
- 19:17peaceful world of the Common Man it is
- 19:20bad Alexander soulon said the defense of
- 19:24individual rights has reached such
- 19:26extremes as to make society as a whole
- 19:28defenseless it is time in the west to
- 19:32defend not so much human rights as human
- 19:35obligations destructive and
- 19:37irresponsible Freedom has been granted
- 19:39boundless space Society appears to have
- 19:42little defense against the abyss of
- 19:44human decadence such as for example
- 19:47misuse of Liberty from moral violence
- 19:50against young people such as Motion
- 19:52Pictures full of pornography crime and
- 19:55horror life organized legalistically has
- 19:58thus shown its inability to defend
- 20:00itself against the corrosion of evil to
- 20:03balance Order and Chaos necessitates
- 20:06personal discipline you cannot rely
- 20:09solely on the law for your moral
- 20:11formation you need to properly assess
- 20:13what is right and wrong and Order
- 20:15yourself towards that we need legal and
- 20:18personal obligations from my analysis of
- 20:22One Piece what would ultimately be the
- 20:24ideal is the government having Liberties
- 20:26to take care of the poor such as what
- 20:28was shown in drum Island when the
- 20:30citizens didn't have free health care
- 20:33but there's also the idea that we
- 20:34ourselves must have personal order as to
- 20:37not misuse our liberties Liberty should
- 20:40not give us license to licentiousness
- 20:42but for our own flourishing there needs
- 20:45to be some personal responsibility in
- 20:47order for society to be free souls in
- 20:50East knew this and I believe that this
- 20:52is what is conveyed in one piece to be
- 20:54free you need to be in control of your
- 20:57life to be in control of your life
- 21:00requires discipline therefore as the
- 21:03best-selling Navy officer Joo willink
- 21:05would say discipline equals freedom but
- 21:09this idea actually has its roots going
- 21:11back far before Joo willing in the Bible
- 21:15it says whoever sins is a slave to sin
- 21:18Aristotle has talked about this and even
- 21:20the founding fathers talked about it
- 21:22Thomas Jefferson James Madison and
- 21:24Benjamin Franklin among many more said
- 21:27that the con stitution was only valid in
- 21:29so far as we are a moral and disciplined
- 21:32Society along with other quotes ringing
- 21:34the general sentiment of virtue being a
- 21:37prerequisite for authentic
- 21:39Freedom Benjamin Franklin said only a
- 21:42virtuous people are capable of Freedom
- 21:45Thomas Jefferson said the price of
- 21:47freedom is eternal vigilance James
- 21:50Madison said the advancement and
- 21:52diffusion of knowledge is the only
- 21:54guardian of true Liberty the ideal
- 21:57society would have moral obligations in
- 21:59combination with legal
- 22:01protections we all know how one piece is
- 22:03great at foreshadowing right well I
- 22:05don't think we've actually visualized
- 22:07the extent of it so here's a neat little
- 22:09graphic I made each line represents a
- 22:11data point and the white bars represent
- 22:13a chapter Oda truly is the best writer
- 22:17except this isn't actually Oda this
- 22:19represents the
- 22:2163,9 cross references in the Bible these
- 22:24books were written over the course of
- 22:25thousands of years and they have over 40
- 22:28different authors not to mention tons of
- 22:30specific prophecies that were
- 22:31archaeologically verified it's Christmas
- 22:33time so I'll give you one the Book of
- 22:35Micah was written in the 8th Century BC
- 22:38so it's roughly 600 years before Christ
- 22:40was born because as we all know Christ
- 22:42split the timeline in half we went from
- 22:44pre-time skip to post-time skip when
- 22:46Christ was born yet it accurately
- 22:48predicts that Jesus would be born in
- 22:49Bethlehem makes you wonder who the
- 22:51greatest author really is someone should
- 22:53present that author in a way that this
- 22:55audience would really like buy my book
- 22:58anyways back to the
- 23:02video Luffy is the embodiment of virtue
- 23:05perhaps not in an objective literal way
- 23:08but in a philosophical Aristotelian and
- 23:11tomisic way he is he just so happens to
- 23:14be virtuous not through effort but
- 23:17because of what naturally comes to him
- 23:19Aristotle has four stages of virtue as
- 23:22described in his NEC kamakan ethics they
- 23:25are viciousness incontinence continence
- 23:29and virtue The Vicious person does
- 23:31something wrong and Revels even enjoys
- 23:34doing the wrong they see no issue with
- 23:37the wrong action they know what moral
- 23:40standards there are they know what laws
- 23:42exist and why they exist but they simply
- 23:45choose to ignore it for his or her
- 23:47selfish gain incontinence refers to a
- 23:50lack of self-control this is when
- 23:52someone knows that they should be doing
- 23:54something but lacks such Herculean
- 23:56strength to do it or they know that they
- 23:58should not be doing something and lack
- 24:01the stoic self-control to abstain he or
- 24:04she is not pleased with the decision
- 24:06made but they were too weak to choose
- 24:08the correct decision next is continence
- 24:12this is the one people usually think is
- 24:14the end it is where you possess the
- 24:16stoic self-control to abstain or the
- 24:19Herculean strength to do something but
- 24:21it is only through the incorporation of
- 24:23incredible grit you do the right thing
- 24:27but it is a struggle for you it required
- 24:30great effort and while you may have
- 24:32enjoyed the end result you did not enjoy
- 24:34the process the last is virtue this is
- 24:38the Glad Act of moral character you
- 24:41choose to do good not because it is your
- 24:43duty but because it aligns with your
- 24:45character this spectrum of States
- 24:48delineates how human beings can be more
- 24:50or less well formed in their estimation
- 24:52and pursuit of what is good the vicious
- 24:55person is malformed the virt virtuous
- 24:58person is well formed the continent and
- 25:01incontinent oscillate in the seams this
- 25:04range of options helps clarify the goal
- 25:07of human life man is made for more than
- 25:09merely following the rules as one piece
- 25:12demonstrates if such legalistic rules
- 25:15are in congruent to proper human
- 25:16flourishing it is actually good to
- 25:19disobey them man is made for the good to
- 25:22cultivate a knack for spontaneous action
- 25:25toward that end to be inclined to
- 25:27towards the good as if by some kind of
- 25:29visceral nature man develops such a
- 25:32faculty for living well and choosing
- 25:34well that the opposing thought is not
- 25:37able to lay claim on their conscious not
- 25:40even for a moment in one of Luffy's most
- 25:43important lines he says that he's not a
- 25:45hero but a pirate a hero shares food
- 25:48with everyone but a pirate keeps it to
- 25:51himself the specific words and example
- 25:54Luffy uses is questionable because as we
- 25:57know that's kind of what he doesn't
- 25:58wanto but the idea is right in line with
- 26:01The Virtuous character defined by
- 26:03Aristotle Luffy doesn't do things
- 26:06because he feels some kind of moral
- 26:08obligation to do them he simply does
- 26:10them because it is what feels right to
- 26:12him at the time a hero does things he
- 26:15doesn't want to do for the betterment of
- 26:17other people a pirate doesn't care about
- 26:20such obligations and just abides by his
- 26:22own capricious whims it just so happens
- 26:25that everything Luffy feels right to do
- 26:28happens to be the correct Choice he
- 26:31effortlessly is a good person it's a
- 26:34wonderful thing that Luffy just so
- 26:36happens to choose the right thing that
- 26:39is the difference between being a hero
- 26:41and being a virtuous pirate Luffy is
- 26:44such a force of raw character that he
- 26:47doesn't even have any thinking bubbles
- 26:50everything he thinks comes right out of
- 26:52his mouth he is in the most
- 26:54unembellished sense a primal paragon G
- 26:57of Aristotelian virtue he lacks even the
- 27:01ephemeral transient transitory point of
- 27:04being inclined towards anything other
- 27:07than such this freedom is so attractive
- 27:10that it inspires others to be free Luffy
- 27:13is so completely unbridle free having
- 27:16such an optimism of the will that he
- 27:18demonstrates to others what it truly
- 27:20means to be free therefore they find in
- 27:24him the reflection of the possibility of
- 27:26their own freedom he is not just setting
- 27:29people free but acting in a man that is
- 27:31so unabashedly free that others are
- 27:34inspired to become free by witnessing
- 27:37him perhaps this is part of what it
- 27:39means to be pirate king as we know Luffy
- 27:42doesn't necessarily want to be the
- 27:44strongest but the freest man in the
- 27:46world someone who is so free so
- 27:49authentically and virtuously free that
- 27:52as being the king he inspires the rest
- 27:55of the world to think and act in such a
- 27:57free way way as him to reflect a global
- 28:00mirror perhaps a reflection seen on the
- 28:02very seas in which we travel on the
- 28:05entire world Illuminating for everyone
- 28:08what it means to be free it is true that
- 28:10the impetus of Luffy's moral actions are
- 28:13the fact that he just so happens to be
- 28:15friends with people on the islands but
- 28:17then you have to reconsider how Luffy
- 28:19just so happens to be friends with the
- 28:21right people at the right time it is
- 28:25once again due to his childlike and good
- 28:28nature Aristotle and St Thomas aquinus
- 28:31insist that a moral life is to go beyond
- 28:34restraint or discipline virtue is a kind
- 28:37of thing akin to a musician who loves
- 28:39her art she needs no parental oversight
- 28:42she merely loves to play the instrument
- 28:44for its own sake a steady ration of
- 28:47scales and ATT tudes reveals to her more
- 28:49of the instrument's beauty and she grows
- 28:52to continually and gladly want more of
- 28:54it joyfully moving from modest pce
- 28:57pieces to Arrangements of increasing
- 28:59technicality for all intents and
- 29:02purposes this is a virtuous musician in
- 29:05the Aristotelian
- 29:06sense this is really the truest form of
- 29:09Freedom a freedom that encompasses
- 29:12genuine Joy regardless of the
- 29:14circumstances or junctures of one's
- 29:16particular life in this profound state
- 29:19of Freedom individuals find the path to
- 29:22their own flourishing contributing to a
- 29:24harmonious world where everyone has the
- 29:26opportunity to to experience true and
- 29:29Lasting happiness perhaps there's a
- 29:31reason Luffy is constantly portrayed as
- 29:34a force of Joy along with freedom
- 29:37perhaps the two are necessary components
- 29:39of each other when fully realized doing
- 29:42well choosing well and embodying such
- 29:45virtuous traits is the true Joy Of Life
- 29:49virtuous interactions Foster prosperous
- 29:51relations which allow such Joy if one
- 29:54possesses such virtuous character they
- 29:57will will do what is right regardless of
- 29:59the law as that is what is constantly
- 30:01highlighted as being a major part of one
- 30:03piece's philosophy the more virtuous a
- 30:06man is the Freer he is to gladly and
- 30:10reflexively choose virtue is the summit
- 30:13of human
- 30:14existence to be clear once again I am
- 30:18not saying that one piece is explicitly
- 30:21espousing the idea of being a virtuous
- 30:23character I am saying that the ideals of
- 30:26Freedom that it espouses necessitates a
- 30:29virtuous character and as such this
- 30:32seems to be the implied message for my
- 30:34reading even if it is scantly
- 30:36acknowledged this is the ultimate
- 30:38message of conveying the negatives of
- 30:40overreaching piracy and overreaching
- 30:42Authority the only way to reconcile
- 30:44these is to create a truly free Nation
- 30:47for people to cultivate the highest
- 30:49level of virtue we need virtuous Pirates
- 30:52virtuous leaders and virtuous citizens
- 30:56thus freedom is is the prerequisite to
- 30:58Virtue and virtue is the condition on
- 31:00which human flourishing rests
- 31:03interestingly enough there's actually a
- 31:05secret goal that Luffy has Beyond
- 31:07becoming the king of the Pirates and the
- 31:09freest man in the world I'm not actually
- 31:11saying or even predicting that this is
- 31:13his goal but this does seem to imply
- 31:16although in a somewhat weak sense that
- 31:19Luffy and by extension Oda see something
- 31:21Beyond free choice to be the ultimate
- 31:24good that there is something more
- 31:26important having the ability to choose
- 31:28what you want don't take this as my key
- 31:31point or anything I just noticed this
- 31:33and I thought it would be interesting to
- 31:35mention that aside all of this is great
- 31:39substantive and intelligent but it is
- 31:41incomplete Alexis dville said Liberty
- 31:45cannot be established without morality
- 31:47nor morality without faith if you would
- 31:50like to know why I think we need a
- 31:52society grounded in a proper moral truth
- 31:55and why that Foundation of Truth best
- 31:57Works through the inculcation of virtue
- 31:59bestowed onto Us by the Christian God
- 32:02and why the biblical worldview is the
- 32:04best one true foundation that exists you
- 32:07can read my book muscular Christianity a
- 32:10case for Spiritual and physical fitness
- 32:13particularly chapter 5 and 7 and with
- 32:16all that being said don't forget to like
- 32:17comment and subscribe thank you for
- 32:20watching I catch you all next time peace
