  1. 0:00With the fluidity of these things,
  2. 0:02how do I know if if I'm a woman? You
  3. 0:04know, I I
  4. 0:06That's a great question. I like scented
  5. 0:08candles and Yeah. I've watched Sex and
  6. 0:10the City. Yeah.
  7. 0:11Um Yeah.
  8. 0:13So, how do I know? Yeah, that that
  9. 0:15question right there, like that question
  10. 0:19is like when it's asked with a lot of
  11. 0:22curiosity, right? That's the beginning
  12. 0:23of a lot of people's like gender
  13. 0:25identity development journeys. If my mom
  14. 0:28who gave birth to me is
  15. 0:30a woman. Mhm.
  16. 0:32And my wife is a woman. Um though I
  17. 0:35haven't asked her.
  18. 0:36Maybe I should. Um
  19. 0:39But if they're all women and also the
  20. 0:40boy who sits down with you and says I I
  21. 0:42think I'm a girl
  22. 0:44actually is one, then then what is a
  23. 0:46woman? Mhm.
  24. 0:49Yeah.
  25. 0:51Great question. I'm not a woman, so I I
  26. 0:53I can't really answer that.
  27. 0:57I don't care if you think you're a sheep
  28. 0:59dog
  29. 1:01and you come into my store, it don't
  30. 1:03matter to me. Just don't come in and try
  31. 1:06to shove that [ __ ] down my throat. If it
  32. 1:08makes someone feel better, what about
  33. 1:10their their feelings? I mean
  34. 1:11I don't give a [ __ ] about their
  35. 1:12feelings. I'm old. What about the Star
  36. 1:14Wars universe?
  37. 1:15Jar Jar Binks,
  38. 1:17pansexual, do you think?
  39. 1:19Transgender?
  40. 1:21Um
  41. 1:22Why would I Why would I even care? It's
  42. 1:25If it's his truth.
  43. 1:27Well, it ain't true. You're not a
  44. 1:29scientist. You're not a gender studies
  45. 1:30major. Or are you? No.
  46. 1:32How do you know that you're a man? How
  47. 1:34do I know that I'm a I guess because I
  48. 1:36got a dick.
  49. 1:39So what So what
  50. 1:42What is a woman?
  51. 1:48Why do you ask that question?
  52. 1:51I just really like to know.
  53. 1:54What do you think the answer to that
  54. 1:55question is?
  55. 1:59Well, I'm I'm asking. That's why I came
  56. 2:01to a college professor who who's
  57. 2:04who this is your This is what you do.
  58. 2:07What other kinds of answers have you
  59. 2:08gotten?
  60. 2:14A lot of like this where you're where
  61. 2:15you're not answering. I've got a lot of
  62. 2:16that, so. I think it's interesting that
  63. 2:18you that you say that some of the people
  64. 2:20you've you've um interviewed have been
  65. 2:22um reluctant to answer it, and I think
  66. 2:23that has a lot to do with the way the
  67. 2:25questions that preceded it and the the
  68. 2:27way that you've conducted yourself in
  69. 2:28the interview. How have I conducted
  70. 2:30myself?
  71. 2:31How do you think you've conducted
  72. 2:31yourself?
  73. 2:33You Yeah.
  74. 2:36You just really don't want to answer the
  75. 2:37questions, do you?
  76. 2:39I I came today very willing and and
  77. 2:41enthusiastic about answering questions
  78. 2:43about women's and gender sexuality
  79. 2:44studies, which is what I do.
  80. 2:46You wanted to answer questions about
  81. 2:47women's studies, and so shouldn't the
  82. 2:49the first
  83. 2:50answer you should be able to provide is
  84. 2:52what exactly is a woman?
  85. 2:53Well, it's it For me, it's it's actually
  86. 2:55a really simple answer, and that's a
  87. 2:56person who identifies as a woman. But
  88. 2:58what are they identifying as? As a
  89. 3:00woman. As But what is that?
  90. 3:03As a woman.
  91. 3:05Do you know what a circular definition
  92. 3:06is?
  93. 3:08I do.
  94. 3:11It's sort of like
  95. 3:12what you're doing right now. Where a a
  96. 3:14woman is is a woman. Mhm.
  97. 3:16Well, cuz you're seeking what we would
  98. 3:17call in my field of work an essentialist
  99. 3:20definition of gender. I think it sounds
  100. 3:23like you would like me to give you a set
  101. 3:24of biological or cultural
  102. 3:26characteristics that are associated with
  103. 3:29one gender or the other. I'm not seeking
  104. 3:31any type of definition. I'm just seeking
  105. 3:33a definition. Yeah, and I gave you one.
  106. 3:36Sure. Uh
  107. 3:38At what age can a child first
  108. 3:41begin to
  109. 3:43transition into another gender or
  110. 3:45identify themselves as
  111. 3:47a gender different from how they were
  112. 3:49born? Yeah. Well, I mean, there's
  113. 3:51there's research and data that show that
  114. 3:53um babies and infants um understand
  115. 3:56differences in gender.
  116. 3:58I don't know if you've ever heard of
  117. 4:00people in the trans abled community.
  118. 4:02These are people who are physically
  119. 4:05able-bodied but feel like they should be
  120. 4:07disabled or identify as such. Uh for
  121. 4:10example, a man who has two arms but
  122. 4:12feels like he should have one. If a if a
  123. 4:14man in this kind of marginalized
  124. 4:16community was went to the doctor and
  125. 4:18said, "I want to have
  126. 4:20my arm cut off."
  127. 4:22Do you think that that That has nothing
  128. 4:23to do with gender identity.
  129. 4:25Well, it's So someone's
  130. 4:27someone's self-identity and how someone
  131. 4:29identifies.
  132. 4:29That sounds That's someone who has a um
  133. 4:33a and I'll accept it as a mental
  134. 4:35diagnosis, a psychiatric condition. I
  135. 4:39don't even pretend to know what
  136. 4:40apotemnophilia is all about, but somehow
  137. 4:43it's the idea that you want to you know,
  138. 4:44you're fascinated or charmed by having a
  139. 4:46limb or part of a limb missing. Mhm.
  140. 4:49Okay? I would say that's
  141. 4:52uh
  142. 4:53pardon my non-medical language, kooky.
  143. 4:57You don't see any
  144. 4:59You think it's just totally irrelevant?
  145. 5:01Yep.
