- 0:05you wouldn't know it but linkin park
- 0:07were actually one of the biggest bands
- 0:08in the world for the good part of a
- 0:10decade since their wildly successful new
- 0:12metal debut the band's discography has
- 0:14sold more than 100 million copies
- 0:15worldwide beginning as a rap metal group
- 0:17in the early 2000s the band would begin
- 0:19cycling through their own iterations of
- 0:21alternative rock electronica metal and
- 0:24more leaving old fans behind them with
- 0:27every new transition and sound the band
- 0:29now remain in a sort of limbo with the
- 0:31tragic loss of their lead vocalist but
- 0:33appear hopeful in returning to the
- 0:35project in the near future as someone
- 0:37who moved on from the band after their
- 0:38first couple of releases i decided to
- 0:40venture through the rest of their
- 0:41catalog to understand what happened to
- 0:44linkin park
- 0:45[Music]
- 0:50before linkin park would find success
- 0:51they would first meet failure high
- 0:53school friends mike shinoda and brad
- 0:55delson envisioned creating a band that
- 0:57would defy genre blending their favorite
- 0:59styles of hip-hop and rock in a way that
- 1:01hadn't been done before together with
- 1:03drummer rob borden they would form the
- 1:04band zero in 1996 in art college mike
- 1:07would meet dj joseph han and invite him
- 1:10to join xero adding a whole new
- 1:11dimension to their sound meanwhile at
- 1:13ucla brad was roommating with the band's
- 1:16eventual bassist dave farrell and by
- 1:181997 the band were recording demos with
- 1:20fellow high school alum mark wakefield
- 1:22on vocals
- 1:30playing small gigs would soon earn them
- 1:31enough attention to open four system of
- 1:33a down in la and scouters at that same
- 1:36show would help land them a development
- 1:37deal with zaba music the band knew they
- 1:39had something special here and decided
- 1:42to double down on their efforts but over
- 1:44the next three years zero would be
- 1:45rejected by every major and independent
- 1:48label in the business the band would
- 1:49make the difficult decision of dropping
- 1:51mark and begin the search for a new
- 1:53vocalist zomba's vp of anr jeff blue
- 1:56would help the band find chester
- 1:57bennington eventually sending him an
- 1:59instrumental track to record his vocals
- 2:01over a few days later chester was in
- 2:03hollywood at zero's rehearsal space
- 2:05riding with the group they soon
- 2:06rebranded themselves as hybrid theory
- 2:09and released their self-titled ep in
- 2:101999.
- 2:19the band began garnering some serious
- 2:20attention online after spamming their
- 2:22music and message boards but trying to
- 2:24capture the attention of record
- 2:25companies continually proved more
- 2:27difficult their demos were met with
- 2:29denial every single time from a label's
- 2:32perspective linkin park weren't creating
- 2:33anything too different from the rest of
- 2:35the new metal explosion of the early
- 2:372000s and signing another band in an
- 2:39already oversaturated genre was risky
- 2:42and redundant luckily the band still had
- 2:45someone who believed in them jeff blue
- 2:47who is now vp at warner bros records he
- 2:49helped sign the band as a developing
- 2:51artist and advised that they changed
- 2:53their name yet again this time to avoid
- 2:55confusion with the electronic group
- 2:56hybrid the newly named linkin park were
- 2:59finally signed to a major label in 2000
- 3:01leading to the release of their debut
- 3:03record later that year
- 3:11written and recorded in just four weeks
- 3:13many of the songs were simply rewritten
- 3:15and polished versions of the demos that
- 3:17saw them rejected by virtually every
- 3:19label on numerous occasions it was a
- 3:21risky move the genre fusion of metal and
- 3:23hip-hop was nearing its pinnacle and
- 3:25mainstream popularity but the genre
- 3:27would end up peaking with linkin park's
- 3:29hybrid theory the band were taking the
- 3:30basics of the rap metal fusion and
- 3:32getting rid of the corny personas and
- 3:34profanity that had become associated
- 3:36with the genre they expanded the sound
- 3:37to include atmospheric electronics
- 3:40[Music]
- 3:42while striking a great balance between
- 3:44angry and vulnerable lyricism
- 3:52the effortless interplay between
- 3:53chester's throat treading and mike's
- 3:55rhymes were also pretty refreshing
- 4:01[Music]
- 4:04simply put linkin park's new metal
- 4:06didn't feel like a gimmick they were
- 4:08truly passionate about their sound and
- 4:09created catchy and relatable anthems
- 4:11that quickly connected them to a legion
- 4:13of fans who saw emotional depth in their
- 4:15heavy music plus it carried no parental
- 4:17advisory sticker which moms and radio
- 4:19stations adored hybrid theory would be
- 4:21the year's best-selling album with
- 4:23nearly 5 million copies sold to date the
- 4:25album has been certified diamond and has
- 4:27sold over 30 million copies worldwide
- 4:30the group set out on an extensive
- 4:31american tour working on new material in
- 4:33their makeshift tour bus studio and
- 4:35putting together the remix album
- 4:37reanimation in their downtime
- 4:40[Music]
- 4:45writing would continue at mike's home
- 4:46studio following their tour and once
- 4:48production started the band were just
- 4:50going for it as their contemporaries
- 4:52scrambled to evolve and hang on to their
- 4:54fan base linkin park decided to craft
- 4:56more of what had garnered them
- 4:57international success
- 5:05despite the increasingly taboo rap metal
- 5:07formula linkin park fans were hooked and
- 5:10begging for more expanding on their
- 5:11debut meteor delivered a concise and
- 5:14more refined track list you have the
- 5:15hybrid like cuts don't stay and hit the
- 5:17floor
- 5:24but then complete diversions like
- 5:26nobody's listening
- 5:27[Music]
- 5:30[Applause]
- 5:32and everything left's a waste of time an
- 5:33almost entirely hip-hop track featuring
- 5:35japanese bamboo flutes and breaking the
- 5:38habit an atmospheric ballad featuring a
- 5:40string section and some of the group's
- 5:42best lyricism
- 5:50meteoro would go on to sell tens of
- 5:52millions of copies leading to a number
- 5:54of side projects including a mashup ep
- 5:56with jay-z
- 6:03but with how similar meteoro was to
- 6:05hybrid theory and sound it raised the
- 6:07questions of where linkin park would go
- 6:09next and if there even was a place for
- 6:12their sound to go at all it was now 2005
- 6:15and rap metal was dead after touring in
- 6:17support of meteora a following release
- 6:19would be temporarily shelved mike
- 6:21shinoda formed the hip-hop side project
- 6:23fort minor and chester bennington
- 6:24started the rock super group dead by
- 6:26sunrise
- 6:27for the sake of their artistic integrity
- 6:29linkin park couldn't do the same thing a
- 6:31third time so rick rubin the career
- 6:33rebooting producer began helping the
- 6:35band find a sound they could continue
- 6:37pursuing moving forward
- 6:39[Music]
- 6:45minutes to midnight would be their most
- 6:47diverse group of tracks thus far
- 6:49carrying a more stripped down punk sound
- 6:51some classic rock flair
- 6:55[Music]
- 6:59and fewer hip-hop stylings with mike
- 7:01only rapping on two songs here we go but
- 7:03a hundred times in every line throw em
- 7:06up and let some shine going out of my
- 7:08[ __ ] mind joe's turntable scratching
- 7:10virtually disappeared and even their
- 7:12guitarists seem to have taken a back
- 7:14seat on the project linkin park's third
- 7:16album failed to perform as well as their
- 7:18first two records i mean it still sold
- 7:2020 million copies and when it came to
- 7:23single power minutes to midnight had
- 7:25plenty of it
- 7:28[Music]
- 7:32what i've done would be their most
- 7:34commercially successful single in part
- 7:36because it was used as the main theme of
- 7:372007's transformers linkin park's
- 7:40reinvention would come with the obvious
- 7:42criticisms that they had sold out and
- 7:44went mainstream their audience was one
- 7:46where they either didn't want change or
- 7:49they'd outgrown the band regardless the
- 7:51group had set themselves up for
- 7:52continued relevance in the alternative
- 7:54rock category and had you held on linkin
- 7:57park was just about to get a hell of a
- 7:58lot more interesting the band would work
- 8:00with film composer han zimmer to score
- 8:02the second transformers film before
- 8:04heading back into the studio with rick
- 8:05rubin to wrap up their fourth record a
- 8:07thousand sons
- 8:10[Music]
- 8:15linkin park proclaimed that this new
- 8:16record wasn't going to be like any of
- 8:18their previous albums but rather a
- 8:20cutting-edge sound separate from
- 8:22anything they'd done before and to be
- 8:24honest they kind of pulled it off spoken
- 8:27word samples synth loops industrial and
- 8:29house elements a handful of interludes a
- 8:31thousand suns has been called linkin
- 8:33park's kid a or their dark side of the
- 8:35moon
- 8:43not in technicalities of course but in
- 8:45spirit it's an art rock album and it
- 8:47works best when it's experienced from
- 8:49start to finish it's also a concept
- 8:51record dealing with themes of nuclear
- 8:53war and the end of humanity regret fear
- 8:56anger sadness and even hope are emotions
- 8:59that litter the album and it all builds
- 9:00towards humanity's last moments before
- 9:03the bombs dropped
- 9:07[Music]
- 9:11a thousand suns was a good record just
- 9:13not the good record that die hards
- 9:15wanted from linkin park this was a
- 9:17complete departure from their guitar
- 9:18heavy work that weaved seamlessly
- 9:20through a number of genres thanks to a
- 9:22handful of interludes despite the new
- 9:24direction and sound the album still sold
- 9:26really well this was linkin park after
- 9:29all but this was not the old linkin park
- 9:31leaving a lot of early fans to move on
- 9:34[Music]
- 9:40the band would begin producing their
- 9:41fifth record living things while on tour
- 9:44eventually inviting rick rubin to
- 9:45co-produce with mike shinoda for a third
- 9:47time the band wanted to bring back the
- 9:49energy of their older material for a
- 9:51more overall comprehensive sound and
- 9:53that description is pretty spot on
- 9:55living things is an electronically
- 9:56charged reboot of hybrid theory it
- 9:58contains the aggressive and moody nature
- 10:00of their first two records
- 10:03[Music]
- 10:08some of the balladry from minutes to
- 10:10midnight
- 10:10[Music]
- 10:17while leaning further into the
- 10:18electronics of a thousand suns
- 10:21[Music]
- 10:26it does have a few fun experiments like
- 10:28the folk inspired castle of glass
- 10:37although it's not nearly as ambitious as
- 10:39their previous record adhering more to
- 10:41one genre and some fairly
- 10:42straightforward songwriting re-embracing
- 10:45the rap rock formula living things seems
- 10:47to have been an attempt at wooing back
- 10:49alienated fans but it's a formula that
- 10:51wears thin towards its second half as
- 10:53the band begins sounding like a complete
- 10:55parody of themselves the right energy
- 10:57had returned but their sound was far
- 10:59from their new metal origins they soon
- 11:01released a second remix lp in 2013.
- 11:06[Applause]
- 11:09then before heading out on the living
- 11:11things world tour mike would start on
- 11:13demos for a follow-up record sounds that
- 11:15were in line with that of their previous
- 11:16two records which the band and reuben
- 11:18felt pretty positive about but soon
- 11:20after their tour mike was appalled by
- 11:22those very same demos deciding to scrap
- 11:25them entirely and begin again from
- 11:27scratch
- 11:30[Music]
- 11:34for the first time since meteora rick
- 11:36rubin wouldn't return and after the
- 11:38producer's departure the band's
- 11:40electronic sound went along with it the
- 11:42hunting party was yet another reboot a
- 11:44full return to rock and the heaviest
- 11:46they've ever sounded
- 11:51[Applause]
- 11:54using hybrid theory as a template linkin
- 11:56park wanted to bring their debut into
- 11:582014 but this record is much more metal
- 12:01than new metal was guitarist brad delson
- 12:03and drummer rob borden sound like
- 12:05they're a part of the band again being
- 12:06given a chance to show off their talents
- 12:08with plenty of guitar solos and
- 12:09hammering drums
- 12:12[Music]
- 12:17system over down and rage against the
- 12:19machine members would join the album too
- 12:21but you would hardly notice they were
- 12:22even there had they not been credited
- 12:24and much of the record is like that
- 12:26unnoticeable and just not very
- 12:29interesting this would be the band's
- 12:30first record to not reach number one
- 12:32since hybrid theory debuting at number
- 12:34three on the billboard 200. it still
- 12:36sold a couple million copies it was
- 12:38linkin park but this was an album the
- 12:40band were meant to be making years ago
- 12:42and as a result it just sounds dated
- 12:45this record sounded more like the linkin
- 12:46park old heads would remember but most
- 12:49of those old heads had already forgotten
- 12:51about linkin park the hunting party was
- 12:53shinoda's response to feeling that the
- 12:54current modern rock landscape was weak
- 12:57and sounded like disney commercial music
- 12:59but then they'd go and release one more
- 13:01light
- 13:03[Music]
- 13:08in the strangest twist of fate linkin
- 13:10park decided to say goodbye to rock
- 13:12altogether one more light was a
- 13:14transition towards pop that divided fans
- 13:17more than ever before not because it was
- 13:20pop linkin park have arguably always had
- 13:22a pop element to them one more light
- 13:24just wasn't very good
- 13:33the band is nearly unrecognizable in
- 13:35just one record linkin park went from
- 13:38this
- 13:43to this
- 13:50on the bright side it continued the
- 13:52band's willingness to push the
- 13:53boundaries of their sound i guess but
- 13:56seriously who was linkin park making
- 13:58this record for the early new metal
- 14:00crowd had left some sometime after
- 14:01minutes to midnight the electro pop fans
- 14:03would stick around until maybe the
- 14:05hunting party and when they'd finally
- 14:06taken a step towards hard rock they went
- 14:09sugary pop the next who was going to
- 14:11stick around after this fans and just
- 14:13plain music listeners were straight up
- 14:15disappointed and the band had had it
- 14:17with fans continually asking for more
- 14:19like hybrid theory but just prior to
- 14:21this record they were using their debut
- 14:23as a blueprint this massive overhaul
- 14:25just didn't make sense and felt
- 14:27inauthentic to the band
- 14:31two months following the album's release
- 14:32the world lost chester bennington after
- 14:34he had committed suicide at his home in
- 14:36california with no note and having just
- 14:39gone on vacation with family it came as
- 14:41a shock to his loved ones the band and
- 14:44fans understandably the group would
- 14:46cancel their upcoming world tour and
- 14:48move into a hiatus following a tribute
- 14:50event in honor of chester the band has
- 14:52since struggled with the idea of how to
- 14:53move forward with linkin park without
- 14:55their lead singer and more recently
- 14:57they've revealed that they'd been
- 14:58writing just before the pandemic struck
- 15:00but that it had been put on hold since
- 15:02so for now we wait with patience and
- 15:05curiosity as to where linkin park will
- 15:07go next but chester will live on in the
- 15:10hearts of the millions of fans that
- 15:11still listen to linkin park today
- 15:14for a period of time linkin park were
- 15:16one of the biggest bands in the world
- 15:18their first two albums saw them empower
- 15:20a generation and it appears their
- 15:21following records would continue to do
- 15:23so for some time some of us just didn't
- 15:26need them anymore they're a band that
- 15:27continually evolved their sound either
- 15:30in an attempt to keep their heads above
- 15:31water or in trying to recapture the
- 15:34glory that came with their debut a
- 15:36thousand suns is definitely a gem i
- 15:38hadn't yet discovered and i can
- 15:40definitely share in every fan's
- 15:41disappointment after finally listening
- 15:43to one more light in the end it doesn't
- 15:46even matter linkin park have more than
- 15:48solidified themselves in popular culture
- 15:50with a number of stylistic releases that
- 15:52are sure to please or simply remind you
- 15:55of your childhood angst
- 15:58[Music]
