What Every Man's Home Is Missing — Transcript

- 0:00Have you ever stood in your home, looked
- 0:01around, and felt that something was
- 0:03missing? Not because the room was
- 0:04unfinished or that furniture was wrong,
- 0:07but because despite everything you've
- 0:09added over the years, it still doesn't
- 0:11feel fulfilling. So, another chair
- 0:13arrives, a different rug, new artwork, a
- 0:15larger television. The room is
- 0:17technically changing, but the feeling is
- 0:19not. Most of the time what we're
- 0:21searching for isn't another purchase.
- 0:23It's an odd conclusion to come to,
- 0:25understanding that something is missing
- 0:28and that adding more will not solve it.
- 0:30My name is Chodri, and today I want to
- 0:32share with you what I believe every
- 0:33remarkable home possesses and why so
- 0:36many men never realize it's what's been
- 0:38missing all along. If you're a returning
- 0:41subscriber, hit the thumbs up. If you're
- 0:42new here, hopefully by the end of this
- 0:44video, you'll be a subscriber. Remember
- 0:47that if you would like our help in
- 0:48designing your room, you can have that

- 0:51>> [snorts]
- 0:51>> by clicking the link in the description
- 0:53below. Every memorable home has
- 0:55something in common. It knows what it's
- 0:57trying to become. That may sound
- 0:59obvious, but it's where most people go
- 1:01wrong. Rooms are often created one
- 1:03purchase at a time. A sofa because it
- 1:05was comfortable, a coffee table because
- 1:07it matched, artwork because there was an
- 1:10empty wall. Each decision seems
- 1:12reasonable on its own, yet when they're
- 1:14viewed together, the room lacks
- 1:16conviction. It's a collection of good
- 1:18choices without a larger idea connecting
- 1:20them. The best homes don't happen that
- 1:22way. They begin with a point of view.
- 1:24Before a single chair is selected,
- 1:26there's already an understanding of how
- 1:28that room should feel. Do we want it to
- 1:30be distinguished, restorative,
- 1:32thoughtful, inspiring? Everything that
- 1:34follows should serve that vision. That's
- 1:36why exceptional interiors feel
- 1:38effortless, not because they required
- 1:40fewer decisions, but because every
- 1:42decision answered the same question.
- 1:45Does this strengthen the story that
- 1:47we're trying to tell? Here's a simple
- 1:49exercise. Before you buy anything for a
- 1:51room, write down three words. Not a
- 1:54style, not furniture, three words that
- 1:57describe how you want the room to feel.
- 1:59For example, it might be structured,
- 2:01layered, and warm. Now, every decision
- 2:03has a guiding purpose. Every chair,
- 2:05every light fixture, every material, ask
- 2:08yourself one question. Does this
- 2:10strengthen one of those three words? If
- 2:13it doesn't, it probably doesn't belong
- 2:15in the room. Like a car with GPS, it's
- 2:17remarkable how much easier the journey
- 2:19becomes once the destination is clear.
- 2:22One of the fastest ways to recognize a
- 2:25thoughtfully designed room is that your
- 2:27eyes instinctively know where to look.
- 2:29There's a sense of order. Something
- 2:31leads and everything else supports.
- 2:33Perhaps it's a fireplace wrapped in a
- 2:35richly veined stone, a dramatic library
- 2:38wall, an oversized piece of artwork, or
- 2:40maybe a beautifully proportioned dining
- 2:43table. Whatever it is, the room has
- 2:45established a clear hierarchy. Compare
- 2:48that to spaces where every element
- 2:49competes equally. Open shelving filled
- 2:52edge to edge, decor spread across every
- 2:54surface, multiple focal points pulling
- 2:57your attention in different directions.
- 2:59The room isn't lacking beautiful pieces,
- 3:01it's lacking leadership. When listening
- 3:04to an orchestra, every instrument
- 3:06matters, but only one carries the
- 3:08melody. The rest exists to strengthen
- 3:11it. Your room should work the same way.
- 3:13You'll need to choose what deserves to
- 3:15lead, then allow everything else to
- 3:17reinforce that. Here's an easy way to
- 3:19test your own room. Walk out of it, wait
- 3:21a few seconds, then walk back in. What
- 3:24did your eyes first notice? If the
- 3:26answer isn't immediate, your room
- 3:28probably doesn't have a clear focal
- 3:30point. Choose one. Your fireplace, the
- 3:32bed, the dining table, your library
- 3:34wall. Let that become the melody.
- 3:37Everything else are just supporting
- 3:39instruments. One of the hallmarks of
- 3:41mature design is the confidence to leave
- 3:43well enough alone. Not every wall
- 3:45requires decoration, every corner does
- 3:47not need furniture, a shelf doesn't need
- 3:49to resemble a telephone line full of
- 3:52pigeons. Restraint isn't the absence of
- 3:55design, it's evidence of confidence.
- 3:57Think about the finest tailored
- 3:59clothing. The man who dresses well isn't
- 4:01wearing every luxury item he owns at
- 4:03once. He understands proportion,
- 4:06balance, and editing. A room deserves
- 4:08the same discipline. Often refinement
- 4:10isn't created by adding something
- 4:12extraordinary, it's revealed when
- 4:14unnecessary distractions are removed.
- 4:17The result is space where your attention
- 4:19can rest. It frees up your ability to
- 4:21notice craftsmanship where the materials
- 4:24and items are given the chance to speak
- 4:26without interrupting one another. Try
- 4:28this sometime this week. Stand in the
- 4:30doorway of your room, take a photograph.
- 4:33Now look at that photo instead of the
- 4:34room. How many decorative objects can
- 4:37you count in the first 5 seconds? Remove
- 4:39three of those. Not forever, just for a
- 4:42week. You'll often discover something
- 4:43surprising. The pieces that remain
- 4:46suddenly become more noticeable,
- 4:48therefore more appreciated. They've been
- 4:50given room to matter and that's what
- 4:52you're aiming for. The homes that stay
- 4:54with us aren't always the most lavish,
- 4:56they're the most personal. Walk into an
- 4:58exceptional home and you'll often
- 5:00discover something beyond furniture. You
- 5:02discover the owner's interests, his
- 5:04profession, his pursuits, his curiosity.
- 5:07Books that have clearly been read,
- 5:09objects collected over decades,
- 5:11photography with personal significance,
- 5:14a favorite instrument, artists he's
- 5:16drawn to, vintage maps. Pieces chosen
- 5:19because they meant something. Not
- 5:20because they completed a shopping list.
- 5:23Your home shouldn't feel
- 5:24interchangeable. It should feel
- 5:26impossible to mistake for anyone else's.
- 5:29Here's a question worth asking yourself.
- 5:31Imagine every piece of furniture
- 5:33disappeared overnight. What would still
- 5:35tell someone that this is your home?
- 5:37Would it be your passions that have been
- 5:39displayed in some way? Something you've
- 5:41built or inherited? Lessons learned and
- 5:43things you value? Maybe a hobby that you
- 5:45always return to? If the answer is not
- 5:49much, then the room may be reflecting
- 5:51purchases more than personality. Great
- 5:54homes always leave you understanding
- 5:56something about the person who lives
- 5:58there. What might be the most important
- 6:00ingredient is one of the hardest to
- 6:02describe, atmosphere. It's the reason
- 6:05two homes can contain equally beautiful
- 6:07furniture, yet leave you with completely
- 6:09different memories. Weeks later, you
- 6:11won't remember the exact coffee table or
- 6:13the color of the sofa. You will remember
- 6:16how the room felt, comfortable and
- 6:18inviting, but thrilling for your senses.
- 6:20That's what atmosphere does. It's
- 6:22created by dozens of elements working
- 6:25together. Lighting that creates depth
- 6:27instead of simply brightness, textures
- 6:29that invite you to reach out and touch
- 6:31them, a balance of openness and
- 6:33intimacy, even the way sound moves
- 6:36through the space. If you are unsure and
- 6:38you want to gauge how your home is
- 6:39performing in this area of atmosphere,
- 6:43imagine a friend unexpectedly stops by.
- 6:45Would you feel encouraged to invite them
- 6:47in to sit down? Not because they're your
- 6:50friend, but because you're excited to
- 6:52have them experience what you've
- 6:53created. Or would you use that tired
- 6:56phrase, "I haven't cleaned, the place is
- 6:58a mess, or else I would invite you in."
- 7:00and continue the conversation near the
- 7:02doorway?
- 7:03Rooms with atmosphere encourage yourself
- 7:05and others to settle in. Your
- 7:07conversations will last a bit longer.
- 7:09Another cup of coffee will appear at the
- 7:11table. Time slows down because no one
- 7:14feels rushed to leave. Be honest with
- 7:16that answer and it might reveal
- 7:18something. If there's one idea that I'd
- 7:20leave you with, it's this. The most
- 7:22memorable homes aren't defined by
- 7:24individual pieces. They're defined by
- 7:26the consistency of the decisions behind
- 7:29them. Over the next week, don't buy
- 7:31anything. Don't order another chair or
- 7:33browse another furniture website.
- 7:35Instead, walk through every room in your
- 7:37home asking yourself five questions.
- 7:40Does this room know what it's trying to
- 7:42become? What is my focal point? What
- 7:45could I remove? What here tells my
- 7:47story? And how does this room actually
- 7:50make me feel? You'll probably discover
- 7:52something. That improvement doesn't lie
- 7:55in your next purchase, but in your next
- 7:57decision.
