What Dying on Every Planet Would Be Like — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Mercury Mercury is the closest planet to
- 0:02the Sun but if you think that means it's
- 0:04hot all the time you're wrong at night
- 0:06temperatures can plummet to an icy minus
- 0:09180° C during the day however they can
- 0:12Skyrocket to 430° C this extreme
- 0:15imbalance happens because Mercury
- 0:17doesn't have a proper atmosphere to
- 0:19regulate temperature instead it has a
- 0:21very thin exosphere which doesn't
- 0:22maintain heat while apart from
- 0:24temperature you wouldn't have to worry
- 0:25about weather on Mercury the real
- 0:27dangers come from solar radiation and
- 0:29the lack of breathable air in fact
- 0:31Mercury gets almost seven times the
- 0:33solar irradiance that Earth receives as
- 0:35the smallest planet in the solar system
- 0:37Mercury is full of craters Cliffs and
- 0:39bumpy terrain making it a pretty tough
- 0:41place to land as well the low air
- 0:43resistance doesn't help either it would
- 0:44make slowing down a spaceship much
- 0:46harder increasing the chances of a
- 0:48high-speed crash landing during the
- 0:50daytime is out of the question because
- 0:51of the extreme heat the latest NASA SPAC
- 0:54suits can only handle up to 121° C
- 0:57nowhere near Mercury's daytime
- 0:59temperatures of 430° C plus keep in mind
- 1:03that Mercury's day lasts about half a
- 1:04year due to its slow rotation nighttime
- 1:07isn't much better temperatures of - 180°
- 1:10C far exceed NASA suit's lower limit of
- 1:13- 157° c so you'd still freeze your best
- 1:17bet would be to try Landing in The
- 1:18Terminator Zone the area between day and
- 1:20night where temperatures are more
- 1:22moderate even there however it can be
- 1:24risky as temperatures can change
- 1:25relatively quickly Venus Venus is the
- 1:28closest planet to Earth Earth sitting
- 1:30just 40 million km away this means the
- 1:32journey there would be relatively short
- 1:34about 4 months its size and gravity
- 1:36wouldn't pose much of a problem as
- 1:38they're pretty similar to Earth's the
- 1:39first real issue you'd face though would
- 1:41be those beautiful yellow clouds you'd
- 1:43see as you approached the surface
- 1:45unfortunately they're made of sulfuric
- 1:47acid a highly corrosive substance that
- 1:49would destroy your lungs in seconds but
- 1:51let's assume you've got a space suit
- 1:52Advanced enough to filter it out as you
- 1:54descend to the surface you'd notice
- 1:55visibility dropping drastically the
- 1:57atmosphere becomes incredibly thick made
- 1:59most of carbon dioxide so you wouldn't
- 2:01be able to see much then there's the
- 2:03heat an unbearable 450° C if that wasn't
- 2:06enough only about 10% of the sunlight
- 2:08reaches the surface as it's blocked by
- 2:10the thick atmosphere so it would be
- 2:12pretty dark on the surface moving your
- 2:14arms and legs would be a serious
- 2:15struggle even though gravity is nearly
- 2:17the same as on Earth the air is so dense
- 2:19you'd feel like you're waiting through a
- 2:21heavy liquid with a good pressurized
- 2:23suit you might last a few seconds down
- 2:25there but before long the pressure about
- 2:2792 bars compared to Earth's one bar at
- 2:30level would crush your suit and if that
- 2:31didn't kill you the sulfuric acid you'd
- 2:34start breathing once your suit broke
- 2:35definitely would Mars Mars is the second
- 2:38closest planet to Earth and the most
- 2:40habitable of all eight planets daytime
- 2:42temperatures are much less extreme
- 2:44compared to Mercury and Venus reaching
- 2:46up to a relatively comfortable 20° C
- 2:49however the real challenge comes at
- 2:50night or in certain parts of the planet
- 2:52where temperatures can drop as low as
- 2:55-13° another big issue similar to
- 2:57Mercury is Mars's incredibly thin thin
- 3:00atmosphere it's mostly made up of carbon
- 3:01dioxide with only Trace Amounts of
- 3:03oxygen meaning there's not that much
- 3:05breathable air this thin atmosphere also
- 3:07results in low pressure and high levels
- 3:09of radiation exposure both of which are
- 3:11incredibly dangerous the average natural
- 3:14radiation level on Mars is 24 to 30 RADS
- 3:17which is about 40 to 50 times the
- 3:19average on Earth on top of that Mars
- 3:21experiences frequent and extremely
- 3:22violent dust storms with wind speeds
- 3:24reaching up to 100 kmph these storms
- 3:27could pose serious challenges so any
- 3:29attempt at habitation would require a
- 3:31sustainable airtight and well insulated
- 3:33life support system Jupiter Jupiter is
- 3:36the biggest planet out of the eight and
- 3:38it's one of the hardest planets to land
- 3:39on primarily because of its extreme
- 3:41radiation levels even 300,000 km away
- 3:44the radiation would start penetrating
- 3:46your suit and you'd be done for but
- 3:48since that's a boring outcome let's
- 3:49assume you have a hypothetical suit that
- 3:51can block the radiation Jupiter's
- 3:53gravity is 2.4 times stronger than
- 3:55Earth's meaning you'd be falling
- 3:57incredibly fast as you enter the first
- 3:59layers of the atmosphere you'd encounter
- 4:01white clouds made of Frozen ammonia
- 4:03crystals with temperatures around
- 4:05-150° C the winds here are no joke
- 4:08reaching insane speeds of up to 482 kmph
- 4:12if you manage to descend about 150 km
- 4:14through these top layers you'd reach the
- 4:16deepest point ever explored this is how
- 4:18far NASA's Galileo probe got back in
- 4:211995 Beyond this point things start
- 4:23getting darker and both temperature and
- 4:25pressure increase rapidly just as a fun
- 4:27fact the pressure near Jupiter's center
- 4:29is estimated to be about 100 million
- 4:31times Earth's atmospheric pressure after
- 4:33hours of falling you might reach
- 4:35Jupiter's inner layers where you'd
- 4:36encounter a super critical fluid a state
- 4:38that's not quite liquid but not gas
- 4:40either here you'd kind of be swimming in
- 4:42this bizarre substance if you continued
- 4:44further toward the center you'd
- 4:46encounter metallic hydrogen an extremely
- 4:48dense liquid that would trap you but if
- 4:49you somehow managed to get through that
- 4:51you'd reach Jupiter's core though we're
- 4:53not entirely sure if it's solid or not
- 4:55the temperatures here would be about
- 4:5624,000 de C roughly 4 . 5 times hotter
- 5:00than the sun's surface Saturn Saturn is
- 5:04the second largest planet in the solar
- 5:05system with an atmosphere primarily made
- 5:07of hydrogen and helium the first
- 5:09challenge would be avoiding a crash with
- 5:11one of its 146 orbiting moons once you
- 5:14manage that you'd encounter its iconic
- 5:16Rings which are made of debris from old
- 5:18moons ice pellets comets and asteroids
- 5:20let's assume you're either an incredibly
- 5:22skilled pilot or your spaceship is
- 5:24indestructible so you don't meet your
- 5:25end by smashing into space junk as you
- 5:28approach Saturn's equator you'd w winess
- 5:29an incredible spectacle of red and
- 5:31purple auras caused by highly energetic
- 5:34hydrogen in the atmosphere however this
- 5:36beauty comes with a catch hurricane
- 5:37force winds blasting at speeds of around
- 5:401,800 kmph would make it nearly
- 5:43impossible to stay steady trying to
- 5:44enter from the North Pole wouldn't be
- 5:46any better up there you'd face a massive
- 5:48storm so large you could fit Two Earths
- 5:51inside it this region also has ammonia
- 5:53clouds similar to Jupiter's and
- 5:55temperatures that can plummet to a bone
- 5:56chilling minus 250° c as as you fall
- 6:00deeper through the layers of clouds the
- 6:01temperatures would start to rise again
- 6:03eventually reaching 0° C at this point
- 6:06while the cold becomes less of an issue
- 6:08pressure becomes your biggest enemy it
- 6:10increases to levels comparable to the
- 6:11deepest parts of Earth's oceans
- 6:13continuing further the gases around you
- 6:15would transition into a liquid state if
- 6:17you somehow survived long enough to
- 6:19reach the center of Saturn you'd
- 6:20encounter its molten Rocky core which is
- 6:22about 10 times the size of Earth
- 6:24temperatures here reach a scorching
- 6:2611,700 de C more than twice as hot as
- 6:30the sun's surface with pressure roughly
- 6:321,000 times greater than Earth's Uranus
- 6:35this is where planets start getting
- 6:37really far from Earth making the journey
- 6:38incredibly long Uranus is one of the two
- 6:41ice Giants and the only planet in the
- 6:42solar system that spins on its side it
- 6:44also rotates faster than Earth with a
- 6:47day lasting just 17 Earth hours by the
- 6:49way being an ice giant doesn't mean the
- 6:51planet is a solid ball of ice instead it
- 6:53means it's primarily composed of
- 6:55elements heavier than hydrogen and
- 6:56helium like Saturn you'd need to avoid
- 6:58crashing into rings once you pass them
- 7:01you'd find yourself surrounded by toxic
- 7:03gas and the temperature would drop
- 7:04rapidly to below -2 200° C this makes it
- 7:08the coldest planet in the solar system
- 7:10if the freezing cold and poisonous
- 7:11atmosphere didn't get you you'd descend
- 7:13through the first layer of the
- 7:14atmosphere here things get even worse
- 7:17the air becomes dense and you'd be
- 7:18pelted by ice pellets eventually you'd
- 7:20reach something truly spectacular a rain
- 7:22of diamonds driven by Winds of up to 900
- 7:25kmph but once again there's a catch the
- 7:28pressure here is about 100 times greater
- 7:30than Earth's which would ultimately
- 7:31Crush you Neptune Neptune is the second
- 7:34ice giant after Uranus and its
- 7:36composition is very similar being the
- 7:38farthest planet from the sun 30 times
- 7:40farther than Earth it's incredibly dark
- 7:43like Uranus Neptune is extremely cold in
- 7:45its outer layers but the inner layers
- 7:47are intensely hot due to immense
- 7:49pressure and heat from its core matter
- 7:51of fact its core is about 7,000 de cels
- 7:54which is hotter than the sun's surface
- 7:56it also experiences the famous Diamond
- 7:57rain caused by high pressure breaking
- 7:59down methane and forming solid diamonds
- 8:02Neptune's winds are among the strongest
- 8:04in the solar system reaching supersonic
- 8:06speeds in many ways it's basically a
- 8:08twin of Uranus so there isn't much to
