  2. 0:02have some good news and some bad news
  3. 0:05for you today the bad news is that only
  4. 0:07one in five people feel that the legal
  5. 0:10system is just people don't feel treated
  6. 0:13fairly and this is bad for our society
  7. 0:15the good news is that we can do
  8. 0:18something about this we will actively
  9. 0:20work with you at school to restore trust
  10. 0:23in the legal systems you can make
  11. 0:26society more inclusive just and peaceful
  12. 0:31don't worry we won't be going through
  13. 0:33hours and hours of dry lectures in a few
  14. 0:37minutes we will start some fun games and
  15. 0:39role-playing to showcase the different
  16. 0:41elements of the law how it is applied
  17. 0:43and how various stakeholders play
  18. 0:46important roles however let's look at
  19. 0:49some important concepts together the
  20. 0:51rule of law relies on four principles
  21. 0:54one accountability to just laws three
  22. 1:00transparency and four equality before
  23. 1:03the law these are the building blocks
  24. 1:06for a fair and functioning society the
  25. 1:11first principle accountability means
  26. 1:14that nobody is above the law Jack can
  27. 1:17you try and explain what this means for
  28. 1:19example in the context of our school yes
  29. 1:22I think this means that both students
  30. 1:25and teachers have to follow the same
  31. 1:26rules for example no parent can buy
  32. 1:30their kid better grades that's right
  33. 1:33everyone has to follow the rules
  34. 1:34including the principal of our school
  35. 1:39can everyone express their opinion
  36. 1:41without fear of censorship what about
  37. 1:44the journalist who was jailed last week
  38. 1:46did he write something illegal good
  39. 1:49point
  40. 1:50all journalists should be free to
  41. 1:52express their opinions that's why now
  42. 1:54there are talks of protests on the
  43. 1:56street all of you are free to express
  44. 1:59what you think as long as you respect
  45. 2:01the views of others this exemplifies the
  46. 2:04second principle of the rule of law just
  47. 2:08laws which protect the fundamental
  48. 2:10rights of the individual thirdly the law
  49. 2:15must be transparent predictable and non
  50. 2:18arbitrary everyone has the right to a
  51. 2:21fair trial and to the presumption of
  52. 2:23innocence
  53. 2:24unfortunately however millions of people
  54. 2:27around the world are still jailed
  55. 2:28without a trial for example just because
  56. 2:32we might think that one student might
  57. 2:34have behaved violently we cannot punish
  58. 2:36them without an investigation and
  59. 2:38evidence lastly there must be equality
  60. 2:44before the law no individual or group
  61. 2:47should be discriminated against by the
  62. 2:49law can you give an example of how this
  63. 2:52applies at our school Jenny
  64. 2:53I guess discrimination could be based on
  65. 2:56religion so at our school we shouldn't
  66. 2:59make fun of kids just because they have
  67. 3:00different beliefs yes a very good
  68. 3:03example Aisha here for instance had to
  69. 3:06change schools as her previous one
  70. 3:08didn't protect her against senior
  71. 3:10students making fun of her faith at our
  72. 3:13school we don't accept such behavior
  73. 3:15all right everyone enough theory for now
  74. 3:18let's move the tables and chairs to get
  75. 3:21the room ready for some role-playing
  76. 3:25UNESCO and UNODC work together on a
  77. 3:29pioneering project called global
  78. 3:31citizenship education for the rule of
  79. 3:34law we've produced two teachers
  80. 3:36handbooks with interactive lessons
  81. 3:38bringing complex concepts to life in the
  82. 3:41classroom school is the first interface
  83. 3:43children have with the government and is
  84. 3:45a perfect microcosm and catalyst for
  85. 3:48change and reform
  86. 3:50we want schools everywhere to enlist the
  87. 3:52next generation support for the rule of
