- 0:05Ralston of Englewood Colorado whoever
- 0:07finds this please make an attempt to get
- 0:10it to
- 0:10them be sure of it we appreciate
- 0:17it in April of 2003 Aaron Ralston got
- 0:21his right arm trapped by a massive half
- 0:23ton Boulder in Utah's blue John Canyon
- 0:26Way out in the middle of nowhere
- 0:30he was all by himself with no phone no
- 0:33radio hardly any food or gear and even
- 0:36worse nobody knew he was out there stuck
- 0:40badly hurt and at the mercy of the
- 0:42unforgiving Desert weather if
- 0:44hypothermia didn't kill him that very
- 0:46night it would be dehydration hunger or
- 0:49infection in a couple of days his time
- 0:52was running short but Against All Odds
- 0:55he made it out he would be forced to do
- 0:57something impossible to imagine I would
- 0:59never do something like that I felt the
- 1:01worst pain that I will ever
- 1:03experience he went against every
- 1:06instinct to preserve himself and did the
- 1:08unthinkable saw off his own arm with a
- 1:12puny dull multi-tool knife in
- 1:17agony in 2010 legendary British
- 1:20filmmaker Danny Bole decided to bring
- 1:23his story to the big screen with the
- 1:25Oscar winning movie 127
- 1:28Hours despite the movies Global success
- 1:31it took some liberties with Aaron's
- 1:32actual experience could it be because
- 1:35the truth was too Grim for Hollywood
- 1:37today we're revealing all the secrets
- 1:39that didn't make it into the movie so
- 1:41you get the real deal about the 127
- 1:44Hours Aaron spent trapped in the
- 1:47desert how many times did Aaron attempt
- 1:50to hack off his arm was he really
- 1:52grinning after breaking his bones and
- 1:55did the hallucinations in the movie
- 1:57actually happen
- 2:01on the morning of his heroine ordeal
- 2:03Aaron was supposed to go mountain
- 2:04climbing with some friends but they
- 2:06bailed at the last minute so he decided
- 2:09to head to the desert on a whim thinking
- 2:11it would be just a short trip he didn't
- 2:13pack much water or food Aaron wasn't
- 2:15sure where exactly in the desert he was
- 2:17heading so he left a note for his
- 2:19roommates saying Utah once he arrived he
- 2:22came across two lost hikers and here's
- 2:25where reality and the movie take
- 2:27different paths Aaron Rec s helping the
- 2:30two women find their way and showing
- 2:32them some basic climbing techniques but
- 2:34he never went swimming with them and
- 2:36they never invited him to a party that
- 2:38night he admitted feeling uneasy about
- 2:40that scene but understood it was meant
- 2:42to help the audience connect with the
- 2:43character authentically he was about 11
- 2:46km into his hike when he stumbled upon a
- 2:48beautiful crevice roughly 1 M wide he
- 2:51decided to venture down into it but a
- 2:53round Boulder blocked his path he
- 2:56figured he could use it to help support
- 2:57his weight on his descent
- 3:00he kicked the rock to test its stability
- 3:02which seemed solid but as soon as he
- 3:04grabbed it it came loose sending him
- 3:14plummeting the pain was
- 3:17excruciating in the movie Aaron appears
- 3:20puzzled but keeps his cool as he stares
- 3:22at his trapped arm but in reality he
- 3:25admits he flew into a rage cursing like
- 3:28a pirate for nearly an hour afterward he
- 3:32felt drained and parched his 3 l water
- 3:34bladder was empty but he still had a 1 L
- 3:37bottle in his backpack without
- 3:39hesitation he reached for it and took
- 3:42three big swallows only then realizing
- 3:45it was his last water Reserve so he took
- 3:48stock of his supplies he had about 600
- 3:51mL of water left some snacks a bunch of
- 3:54climbing ropes his video camera LED
- 3:57headlamps and a cheap multi-tool his
- 4:00first thought was to use the knife in
- 4:02his multitool to chip away at the
- 4:03boulder but after hours of scraping he
- 4:06realized it was a lost cause he was
- 4:09trapped facing the risk of ganging
- 4:12starvation and even the danger of being
- 4:14drowned by a flash blood that same night
- 4:18for the first time the idea crossed his
- 4:21mind he might have to amputate his arm
- 4:24though he resisted the thought
- 4:26fiercely but there was a more immediate
- 4:28concern his legs were exhausted and he
- 4:32needed to conserve as much energy as
- 4:34possible so ingeniously he fashioned a
- 4:37seat using his climbing
- 4:44ropes according to the movie Aaron
- 4:46experiences a hallucination where he
- 4:48imagines being at the party the two
- 4:51hiker girls invited him
- 4:52to but the harsh reality was that
- 4:56morning he was contemplating the best
- 4:58way to meet his end
- 5:00thankfully he quickly snapped out of it
- 5:03focusing instead on Survival so he got
- 5:06down to business and attempted to
- 5:08recreate a pulley system he'd used as a
- 5:10search and rescue volunteer using his
- 5:12climbing ropes it worked but the ropes
- 5:15lacked the necessary tension to budge
- 5:17The Rock and he didn't have the strength
- 5:20either after toiling for hours to no
- 5:23avail he began seriously considering
- 5:26amputating his arm but he couldn't bring
- 5:28himself to do it
- 5:30as depicted in the movie this was the
- 5:33day he recorded his Farewell
- 5:35message my name is Aaron Roston my
- 5:38parents are Donald and Larry rollston of
- 5:40Englewood Colorado whoever finds this
- 5:43please make an attempt to get it to them
- 5:47be sure of it I would appreciate
- 5:50it the next day Aaron improvised a
- 5:53tourit using parts of the neoprene
- 5:55insulation from his camel back he tried
- 5:58to slice his skin but the blade just
- 6:00wasn't sharp Enough by this point he had
- 6:04only 150 mL of water left so he decided
- 6:07to store his urine in the Camelback
- 6:09bladder in case he might need it later
- 6:12drinking urine can be dangerous it can
- 6:14lead to kidney failure making for an
- 6:17even more agonizing demise according to
- 6:20the movie Aaron experiences a
- 6:22hallucination of a flash flood that day
- 6:25in the scene his Elation at getting
- 6:27rainwater is quickly overshadowed by the
- 6:30fear of drowning eventually he harnesses
- 6:33the power of the water to lift the Rock
- 6:36and free himself but in reality Aaron
- 6:39never had such a hallucination or faced
- 6:41a flash flood even though they're a
- 6:43common threat in the
- 6:47area good morning everyone in the movie
- 6:51Aaron uses his camera to record segments
- 6:53of a radio show to keep his mind
- 6:55occupied
- 6:57for but in reality he uses it to record
- 7:01messages for his family as he later
- 7:03revealed what kept Him going was the
- 7:05thought of his family his parents and
- 7:07his sister Sonia he only showed the
- 7:10tapes to his mom and assured her they
- 7:12would never be made public on this day
- 7:15he summoned his courage and stabbed into
- 7:17his forearm surprisingly he noticed
- 7:20hardly any pain so he continued digging
- 7:23with the blade until he reached his bone
- 7:25feeling its vibrations but he had to
- 7:28stop he he was out of water and losing
- 7:34energy after over 24 hours without water
- 7:37and still unable to make up his mind
- 7:40about amputation Aaron recorded his last
- 7:43will that same night he predicted that
- 7:45he'd die the next day so he carved his
- 7:49Tombstone into the wall and tried to get
- 7:52some
- 7:53sleep as depicted in the movie he
- 7:55experienced a hallucination of a young
- 7:58boy playing with him in the vision his
- 8:00right arm is amputated yet he seems
- 8:03happy carrying the child on his left arm
- 8:06he had a feeling it was his future son
- 8:09he knew he was going to
- 8:13survive the following morning the
- 8:15excitement of the hallucination had
- 8:17faded once again he was resigned to the
- 8:21idea of
- 8:22death by pure chance he grazed his right
- 8:25thumb with the blade and realized that
- 8:27his skin peeled off effort
- 8:30LLY he could slice through it like
- 8:32butter his arm was just a carcass in
- 8:35disgust he began thrashed his body then
- 8:39it hit him he could break his bones and
- 8:42slice through the skin using the torque
- 8:45from his trapped arm he started
- 8:47contorting his body until he fractured
- 8:49his Ona and radius
- 8:52bones believe it or not he was
- 8:55overwhelmed with
- 8:57joy he even insisted that Danny boil
- 9:00show him grinning in the
- 9:02scene next using his Camel Back tube as
- 9:05a tourniquet he took his blade and began
- 9:08slicing through his
- 9:10flesh and then I was looking at the the
- 9:13nerve and I had to take the knife and
- 9:16pry it up and even just when I touched
- 9:18it it burned all the way up up my arm
- 9:21and and I took it again and I plucked it
- 9:24up and that that fire sensation
- 9:28redoubled and went all the way up to my
- 9:29shoulder but I knew that that was the
- 9:31hard part the agonizing procedure lasted
- 9:34for about an hour finally he was free
- 9:38boom and I wasn't even attached anymore
- 9:40and I fell down like this and I I
- 9:44I I was
- 9:46free it was was the happiest moment of
- 9:51my life he had estimated it would take
- 9:53him about 10 hours to seek assistance so
- 9:56he set off dehydrated and exhausted and
- 10:00bleeding out Aaron still managed to
- 10:02repel down a 20 M wall and Trek
- 10:05approximately 10 km by a miracle he
- 10:09spotted a family of Dutch tourists in
- 10:11the distance and screamed for their
- 10:13attention they gave him food and water
- 10:15and sought help fortunately a rescue
- 10:19crew was already scouring the area for
- 10:21him luckily Aaron's mom had already
- 10:24alerted the police that he was missing
- 10:26they traced his credit card to a store
- 10:28near Blue John Canyon finally 4 hours
- 10:32after amputating his arm Aaron received
- 10:35the medical attention he desperately
- 10:37needed despite Aaron's incredible
- 10:39bravery courage and endurance venturing
