WEEPING BLISTER on a COW's HOOF — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00this hoof is hiding an incredibly sore
- 0:02secret you see hidden within the heel
- 0:04bulb there is a raging infection you're
- 0:07watching the hoof
- 0:09GP from this angle it's plain for us all
- 0:12to see the fluid emerging from our heel
- 0:15bulb is a Telltale sign that there is a
- 0:17very serious infection raging within
- 0:21that outer claw picking up the grinder I
- 0:23know that this may aggravate her
- 0:25slightly working on a foot like this is
- 0:28always going to cause a bit of
- 0:29discomfort
- 0:30within the hoof capsule itself the
- 0:32tissue is hugely inflamed so even
- 0:35touching it is going to be
- 0:40uncomfortable I take my grinder and try
- 0:43to balance both claws as well as I
- 0:45possibly can aiming for 5050 weight
- 0:48bearing in other words I want half of
- 0:50our weight to be on our outside cloth
- 0:52and half of it to be on the inside this
- 0:55is how we start every routine trim and
- 0:58yes I know this is not a routine trim
- 1:00but it is how we start every single trim
- 1:04then we model out this area to avoid
- 1:06soul ulceration that hemorrhaging or
- 1:09bruising you can see right now is the
- 1:11start of a soul ulcer one of the most
- 1:14common problems you find in cow's feet
- 1:17but we're not here for that ulcer we're
- 1:20here for that massively inflamed heel
- 1:23and the infection that right now is
- 1:25hidden out of sight we need to remove
- 1:29all of the overb gardening hoorn so that
- 1:31that infection can be allowed to be
- 1:33healed up and cured by the cow's immune
- 1:36system and any topical treatment we
- 1:37choose to use at this point in the trim
- 1:40though I have absolutely no idea What
- 1:43Lies Beneath this
- 1:47huorn I take my time taking small
- 1:50slithers of huorn using my fingers to
- 1:52feel my way around the cow's hoof trying
- 1:55to understand what is out of sight right
- 1:58now calling on my knowledge of the
- 2:01hundreds of thousands of cows that had
- 2:02trimmed
- 2:04before I know it's inflamed I know
- 2:07there's an infection but right now I
- 2:09truly don't know the full extent of
- 2:18[Music]
- 2:26it this perople horn the ho horn you
- 2:29find at the heel of a cow's hoof is
- 2:31there for suspension it's there for
- 2:34impact which is why it's soft flexible
- 2:36and pliable but also why it's more
- 2:39difficult for me to cut I can't slice
- 2:42through it like the harder hoorn because
- 2:44it flexes away from the blade of my
- 2:47knife now we're starting to see where
- 2:49the problem is but I still need to feel
- 2:51my way around the cow's foot to
- 2:54understand what's left to
- 2:57remove now it's been dried off we can
- 3:00see the core of the problem this is the
- 3:02heart of the infection a heel ulcer
- 3:05which has burst out become infected and
- 3:08cause digital dermatitis to be allowed
- 3:10into the hoof capsule itself so that
- 3:13whole area is now being ravaged by
- 3:15infection I need to remove even more
- 3:18hoorn though the ulceration that's
- 3:20beginning to form within the heart of
- 3:22the modeling area still needs to be
- 3:24deepened out if we want to make sure we
- 3:27absolutely avoid any further ulceration
- 3:31and therefore further pain this cow is
- 3:34clearly going to need a block so I start
- 3:37preparing the inner claw ready for it to
- 3:39be
- 3:40[Music]
- 3:48applied I still have work to do in the
- 3:50hoof but the glue also needs time to
- 3:53cure I've placed a nozzle in between the
- 3:56feet so that I can get right up in there
- 3:57with my knife and model out that axial
- 4:00wall as deeply as I possibly can at this
- 4:03stage I'm not actually sure whether or
- 4:06not there's an ulcer underneath this
- 4:08outer
- 4:10hemorrhaging but I'm hoping there's
- 4:14[Music]
- 4:27not with every swipe of the knife I'm
- 4:30half expecting this bruising to
- 4:32disappear to dissipate and come to
- 4:34nothing but it just simply doesn't seem
- 4:37to be doing that and I'm starting to
- 4:39worry that that infection isn't her only
- 4:42true
- 4:50problem the problem isn't the bruised H
- 4:53horn the problem is whatever was causing
- 4:55it and that is what I've removed and
- 4:59abundance of hoof horn and too much
- 5:01weight being on that area is what caused
- 5:03this heel ulcer and this soul ulceration
- 5:05to form I've removed that excess huorn
- 5:09and have transferred all of the weight
- 5:10onto that block so that sore outer claw
- 5:14will not materialize any further into an
- 5:16ulcer that bruising will dissipate over
- 5:19the next couple of weeks and the heel
- 5:21ulcer and deritis surrounding it will be
- 5:23cleared up by the use of that salicylic
- 5:26acid and this cow will be healed
