  1. 0:00of First Look at Apache 419 which is the
  2. 0:04uh latest release of Apache cloudstack
  3. 0:06from the Apache cloudstack Community uh
  4. 0:08speaking today is myself Giles I'm the
  5. 0:11CEO and founder of shape blue the
  6. 0:12cloudstack company I'm also a PMC member
  7. 0:16of and a committer in Apache cloudstack
  8. 0:18and I chair the cloudstack European User
  9. 0:21Group
  10. 0:22Marco yes uh welcome guys to the webinar
  11. 0:28so I am technical manager at shap Blue
  12. 0:31and also cloudstack committer a long
  13. 0:34time we work with cloudstack so that's
  14. 0:37it let's go g cool okay thank you
  15. 0:40Marco Okay uh what we're going to talk
  16. 0:42about today uh we are G to talk about
  17. 0:46the actual release uh of Patrick Cloud
  18. 0:48419 some information about that and
  19. 0:51we're then going to focus on a number of
  20. 0:54the key new features now to make it
  21. 0:56clear we are not we haven't got time to
  22. 0:59cover all of the new features of Apache
  23. 1:01Cloud 419 it's a big release these
  24. 1:05features are things that Marco and I
  25. 1:07like and we think are significant uh and
  26. 1:09that we've focused on but there's a lot
  27. 1:11more to explore around 419 than just
  28. 1:13what we're showing you today we'll do a
  29. 1:16live demo of some of those features and
  30. 1:18hopefully time permitting we'll uh we'll
  31. 1:20have time for some some questions at the
  32. 1:23end so the actual release itself I mean
  33. 1:26we're speaking today today's uh Friday
  34. 1:28the 2nd of February
  35. 1:302024 and literally this morning uh the
  36. 1:34vote concluded and 419 is is ready for
  37. 1:38for release by the community as we're
  38. 1:41speaking it hasn't officially been
  39. 1:42released because the announcement hasn't
  40. 1:43gone out but I guess by the time anybody
  41. 1:45sees this which will probably be
  42. 1:47something like the 5th of February 2024
  43. 1:49you will have heard that 419 has has
  44. 1:51been released uh 419 has been a massive
  45. 1:54effort by the whole Apache cloudstack
  46. 1:57Community people coming from lots of
  47. 1:59different organ organizations
  48. 2:00contributing features the count we saw
  49. 2:03was
  50. 2:043155 total new features improvements and
  51. 2:07Bug fixes uh out of those 26 specific
  52. 2:11features um we're going to cover in
  53. 2:14detail I think eight today they they're
  54. 2:16just the the the the most significant
  55. 2:18ones we think but there are as I said
  56. 2:20earlier a lot of other features for
  57. 2:22people to look at 419 is a LTS release
  58. 2:26long-term support release from the
  59. 2:28cloudstack community so it will be
  60. 2:30supported by the community for a period
  61. 2:32of 18 months from its release which will
  62. 2:34take us to August uh there's a typo
  63. 2:37there August 2025 not 2024 just to make
  64. 2:41that
  65. 2:43clear okay let's start talking about
  66. 2:46some of the features uh and I think Mark
  67. 2:49and I both think this is probably the
  68. 2:52most significant feature if not that
  69. 2:54it's the biggest feature in 419 is just
  70. 2:56the timing of this uh this has been in
  71. 2:59in in progress for for months and months
  72. 3:01and months but obviously I think anybody
  73. 3:04watching this probably has been
  74. 3:05following what's going on with broadcom
  75. 3:07and VMware and we can openly share that
  76. 3:10you know the number of people looking to
  77. 3:12migrate to cloudstack with something
  78. 3:14like KVM underneath it uh has gone up
  79. 3:18exponentially in in the last six weeks
  80. 3:20or so since broadcom made their
  81. 3:21announcement and what we've now got in
  82. 3:25419 is the ability to migrate an
  83. 3:28instance a VM okay from the VMware
  84. 3:32hypervisor to KVM okay now that can work
  85. 3:36in one of two ways as most people I'm
  86. 3:38sure know cloudstack can manage through
  87. 3:41Venter it can manage a VMware
  88. 3:43environment and you can actually convert
  89. 3:45directly a managed VMware uh data center
  90. 3:50instances in there directly to KVM
  91. 3:52instances in your Cloud stack
  92. 3:54environment or optionally you can just
  93. 3:58point it at an ex external Al V Center
  94. 4:00give it the config the credentials you
  95. 4:02need for that V Center and Cloud set
  96. 4:04will go off and contact that
  97. 4:06Venter bring in the the the VM and
  98. 4:09convert it to to KVM on the flight this
  99. 4:12is a really really powerful feature and
  100. 4:14it's one that a lot of organizations
  101. 4:16have been crying out for for some time
  102. 4:18but as I said you know with what's going
  103. 4:19on with VMware in the industry at the
  104. 4:21moment the timing is great the timing is
  105. 4:23absolutely great for
  106. 4:25this we actually look at what it does uh
  107. 4:28it's down you can see there we've got
  108. 4:31the menu command import export instances
  109. 4:33that was already there for some existing
  110. 4:35functionality which let you import uh VM
  111. 4:39VM external VMware instances but now you
  112. 4:42can convert them including their discs
  113. 4:44networks and any configuration of a
  114. 4:46VMware uh VM into a KVM instance in
  115. 4:50Apache Cloud State it's an admin only
  116. 4:53feature uh theoretically it could be
  117. 4:56some things made available to users but
  118. 4:58that would be an interesting uh
  119. 5:00discussion I think I think for for
  120. 5:02service providers and operators to have
  121. 5:05uh it takes existing VMware instances or
  122. 5:08VMS from an ex external ventor like I
  123. 5:11mentioned earlier behind the scenes it's
  124. 5:14using uh V vert V Tov to actually do the
  125. 5:17conversion it chooses a a host a KVM
  126. 5:21host on which to do that conversion uh
  127. 5:24and then goes through all of the steps
  128. 5:26required to migrate the V the the VR
  129. 5:30uh it discs it networks it
  130. 5:31configurations to uh to KVM uh quite
  131. 5:36interestingly uh for Linux instances as
  132. 5:39as in the the guest OS they can actually
  133. 5:41be done while whilst they're running uh
  134. 5:44Windows instances we know need to be
  135. 5:46stopped uh to to run this
  136. 5:48process there's a few restrictions all
  137. 5:51of this I believe is going into the 419
  138. 5:54documentation uh and those restrictions
  139. 5:57are around the the destination KVM host
  140. 5:59that you're aiming for uh there's the
  141. 6:02list of supported uh dros that that we
  142. 6:06the functionality can actually point at
  143. 6:08and there's a couple of sort of
  144. 6:09prerequisites for a bunto auntu sorry uh
  145. 6:13it doesn't install MBT MBD kit uh so
  146. 6:17that needs to be installed by by the
  147. 6:18Admin first and for Windows guests uh
  148. 6:23you you need to install the uh Vero
  149. 6:25drivers prior to using this tool to push
  150. 6:29ABM instances onto it hugely powerful
  151. 6:32Tool uh very very
  152. 6:35exciting okay uh in the same area uh
  153. 6:40although I think this is a completely
  154. 6:42different work done by uh a different
  155. 6:44set of people uh We've now got the
  156. 6:46ability to import existing KVM VMS as
  157. 6:51cloudy instances this was sort of always
  158. 6:54possible and I me Marco will will will
  159. 6:56nod when I say this but you know this
  160. 6:58was a convoluted process before you had
  161. 7:00to create a template based on the on the
  162. 7:03machine and then create a create an
  163. 7:05instance based on that template it was a
  164. 7:07it was a very convoluted process you've
  165. 7:09now got
  166. 7:10straightforward uh UI and API
  167. 7:12functionality to get external KVM uh
  168. 7:16instances and bring them under Cloud STX
  169. 7:19control uh it can come in from a for it
  170. 7:23can uh use a number of different sources
  171. 7:27uh the important thing is that the
  172. 7:29machine end up uh within KVM clusters in
  173. 7:33in aache Cloud State different places
  174. 7:36you can just point it at a remote KVM
  175. 7:38host give it its address give it some
  176. 7:40credentials and it will go and find uh
  177. 7:42the VM off that host uh you can use a
  178. 7:45qcal 2 image from either shared or local
  179. 7:49storage just point it at that image off
  180. 7:51you go uh and you can also use it it's a
  181. 7:55weird one this to actually get unmanaged
  182. 7:57instances that are already in a
  183. 7:59cloudstack KVM cluster you might have
  184. 8:01some other instances that are on the
  185. 8:03side so lots of different options very
  186. 8:06simple UI or accessible by the API and
  187. 8:09this like all of these admin sorry these
  188. 8:12migration tools more than likely people
  189. 8:14are going to be accessing this via the
  190. 8:15API via Cloud monkey they're going to be
  191. 8:18batching things up in in into scripts
  192. 8:20instead of just uh using the user
  193. 8:23interface and here's an interesting
  194. 8:25point with this uh which is you know
  195. 8:28this is primarily designed people who
  196. 8:29are using cloudstack environments and
  197. 8:31they want to well they're building a new
  198. 8:33one and they want to bring in existing
  199. 8:36uh KVM machines but what this does open
  200. 8:38up is the ability for people to start
  201. 8:41considering using Apache cloudstack
  202. 8:43basically just as a KVM management layer
  203. 8:46not necessarily thinking of it as a
  204. 8:48cloud layer but just thinking of it as a
  205. 8:49virtualization management platform which
  206. 8:51is a use case for cloud stack we haven't
  207. 8:54seen uh very much in in the
  208. 8:57past okay the next uh new feature is
  209. 9:01cloudstack DRS uh and the name of this
  210. 9:05feature is DRS it doesn't have a longer
  211. 9:07name and the reason it doesn't have a
  212. 9:09longer name is that there is a large
  213. 9:11virtualization vendor that has a
  214. 9:13trademark which is uh related to
  215. 9:16distributed resource scheduler uh so CL
  216. 9:20isn't allowed to call it that but CL is
  217. 9:21allowed to call it DRS and you probably
  218. 9:24guessed what this does uh this is about
  219. 9:27being able to balance
  220. 9:29instances across your host estate within
  221. 9:32a within a cluster or across your entire
  222. 9:34Cloud
  223. 9:35environment uh there's not a lot to see
  224. 9:38with this I'll talk you through the
  225. 9:39configuration options because the whole
  226. 9:41point of this is It's just something
  227. 9:43that sits quietly in the background
  228. 9:44making sure that your infrastructure
  229. 9:46your computer infrastructure is being
  230. 9:48used as as efficiently as
  231. 9:50possible uh it automatically moves
  232. 9:53instances between hosts it relies on the
  233. 9:57underlying uh host migration uh
  234. 10:00framework which was already there in
  235. 10:02cloudstack it can be set up globally or
  236. 10:05on a per cluster basis so if you've got
  237. 10:08you know different sort of hosts
  238. 10:09different sort of policies you're
  239. 10:11requiring at cluster level you can do
  240. 10:13that and it supports two very simple
  241. 10:15algorithms okay balanced where it's
  242. 10:19going to try and balance the workloads
  243. 10:21I.E the instances as evenly as possible
  244. 10:25or as evenly as you specify across all
  245. 10:27of the hosts in a cluster or condensed
  246. 10:29which is basically the opposite where
  247. 10:30it's going to try and squash everything
  248. 10:32into as fewer hosts as
  249. 10:34possible
  250. 10:36uh why would you use those two different
  251. 10:39ones well balancing is is you know is
  252. 10:42about spreading the load uh it's about
  253. 10:46increasing uh or reducing contention
  254. 10:49issues it's about giving yourself
  255. 10:52effectively a little bit more
  256. 10:53distribution from an AJ a viewpoint but
  257. 10:56obviously the down side of balance is
  258. 10:58your you're using more hosts uh and
  259. 11:01you're using more power in those hosts
  260. 11:03so balanced is what we expect what we
  261. 11:05see with with DRS is what people use uh
  262. 11:08most often in in production environments
  263. 11:11but if you're in a sort of staging or a
  264. 11:14test Dev environment power consumption
  265. 11:17poost consumption might be might be the
  266. 11:19most important thing or the ability to
  267. 11:22concentrate instances so you can do some
  268. 11:24maintenance on some other host in which
  269. 11:27case you choose the condensed algorithm
  270. 11:29and it's doing the opposite DRS is
  271. 11:31running in the background and it's
  272. 11:32constantly evaluating based on some
  273. 11:35metrics how it can squash as many
  274. 11:37instances into into as fewer hosts as
  275. 11:40possible as I say this this runs
  276. 11:42automatically there's not a lot to to
  277. 11:45see uh there's two two main areas you've
  278. 11:48got these I think there's six global
  279. 11:50settings that's all you need to do to
  280. 11:52get this running and then at cluster
  281. 11:54level you can go manually kick off DRS
  282. 11:57uh at cluster level there's a there's a
  283. 12:00a new area of the the cluster screen
  284. 12:02where you can do that and these settings
  285. 12:04are basically choose whether you want
  286. 12:06balance imbalanced uh whether it's
  287. 12:08enabled what intervals it's using and
  288. 12:11then some metrics around what what
  289. 12:13amount of imbalance is is is tolerated
  290. 12:16uh how often you want it to run that
  291. 12:18sort of thing click enable off it goes
  292. 12:21and it's going off it's evaluating per
  293. 12:24cluster level what state things are in
  294. 12:27against uh the amount of balance or
  295. 12:29imbalance you want and then it will just
  296. 12:31live migrate uh machines uh around the
  297. 12:34house and it's hypervisor agnostic it
  298. 12:37works on any hypervisor uh that Apache
  299. 12:40Cloud stack can work
  300. 12:43with Okay next major new feature uh vnf
  301. 12:48appliances uh this has been long coming
  302. 12:51uh I think many of you have followed in
  303. 12:52recent releases of cloud set there's
  304. 12:54been a lot going on in in the networking
  305. 12:56space uh for those of you don't know
  306. 12:59what a vnf is uh virtual Network
  307. 13:01function this is the idea about you know
  308. 13:04rather than using a physical device you
  309. 13:06can take a virtualized network deplo uh
  310. 13:09Appliance whether it's a whatever it is
  311. 13:11a router a firewall a one accelerator
  312. 13:14whatever and deploy that into your Cloud
  313. 13:17stack environment and use the network
  314. 13:19functions of that now in theory that's
  315. 13:23been possible and a lot of users of
  316. 13:24cloud stack are basically spinning up
  317. 13:27instances with a template for some sort
  318. 13:29of Appliance but then management of of
  319. 13:33those
  320. 13:34appliances uh being able to map the
  321. 13:37network interfaces for those appliances
  322. 13:40being able to get to the admin area of
  323. 13:42that Appliance and then for for service
  324. 13:45providers being at a track that people
  325. 13:46are using those appliances so you can
  326. 13:48bill for them has always been a pain
  327. 13:50because it's been a a bit of a a bit of
  328. 13:53a hack to to get this working but 419
  329. 13:56now has uh built in vnf Appliance
  330. 14:00support and here's some of the use cases
  331. 14:02uh if you're connecting you know Branch
  332. 14:05zones that sort of thing you might want
  333. 14:07to use uh sdwan devices to support
  334. 14:12sd1 uh W optimization the these are all
  335. 14:15things that the cloud Virtual Router
  336. 14:17can't do right so you you need a vnf to
  337. 14:19do those and now the point is you can
  338. 14:22now deploy those vnfs directly in Cloud
  339. 14:25stack uh using pfSense or microti
  340. 14:28firewalls Cisco ASA firewalls this might
  341. 14:31be for compliance reasons right so
  342. 14:32you've got a tenant in your Cloud uh for
  343. 14:35some regulatory reason you has to use a
  344. 14:37Cisco ASA because they have to tick a
  345. 14:39box with some government Authority you
  346. 14:41can now set up a vnf appliance template
  347. 14:44Cisco ASA and users can deploy that uh
  348. 14:47in your Cloud stack environment so what
  349. 14:51this actually this functionality allows
  350. 14:52people to do is to deploy and configure
  351. 14:55the vnf appliances in cloudstack and
  352. 14:57cloudstack goes off it requ it
  353. 14:59configures all of the required network
  354. 15:01interfaces for the appliance uh it also
  355. 15:04sets up rules that allow you to get
  356. 15:06through or your users to get through to
  357. 15:08access the uh the the admin side of the
  358. 15:12appliance uh those appliances are based
  359. 15:16on templates that the admin will create
  360. 15:18and uh in the demo later we'll we'll
  361. 15:21we'll talk you through how you create
  362. 15:22those templates and then create appli
  363. 15:24deploy appliances based on those
  364. 15:26templates usage is all recorded by the
  365. 15:29cloud usage server so you can build for
  366. 15:32for usage of these things uh and you
  367. 15:35know you can do again all of this like
  368. 15:37anything with Cloud stack you can you
  369. 15:39can uh do this through the API or
  370. 15:41through the through the
  371. 15:44UI on the template side just a couple of
  372. 15:47screenshots uh specific things when you
  373. 15:50create a vnf template you have a load of
  374. 15:53extra settings that you don't have in a
  375. 15:55normal cloudstack template and that's
  376. 15:57around the interface management you can
  377. 16:00add as many interfaces as the appliance
  378. 16:02needs and then you can add key value
  379. 16:05pairs that get pushed into to the
  380. 16:07Appliance things like the uh the
  381. 16:10password the the address for the uh for
  382. 16:14the admin interface that sort of thing
  383. 16:16that license information uh that's
  384. 16:18another one that as a service provider
  385. 16:20you you could push
  386. 16:23in okay uh right another major milestone
  387. 16:27for cloudstack is cloudstack now
  388. 16:30supports uh object
  389. 16:32storage and particularly in the service
  390. 16:36provider space nearly every service
  391. 16:38provider we know using cloudstack also
  392. 16:40wants to deliver object storage to their
  393. 16:42customers and traditionally there's been
  394. 16:45no integrated way of doing this with
  395. 16:48Cloud people have gone and had to use
  396. 16:50other Solutions we've had some vendors
  397. 16:52who have done some sort of UI
  398. 16:53integration into Cloud State but we've
  399. 16:55never had any good integration and the
  400. 16:57the sort of holy Grail really is that
  401. 17:00people can in the cloud set UI and API
  402. 17:03they can create buckets they can add
  403. 17:06data into those bucket objects in into
  404. 17:09those buck read those buckets like they
  405. 17:11were doing Amazon with with with S3 and
  406. 17:13we've now got that with uh with
  407. 17:15cloudstack 419 so what's actually being
  408. 17:19created is this piece in the middle
  409. 17:21which is the CL cloudstack object
  410. 17:23storage framework because of the you
  411. 17:26know the concept of cloudstack of it you
  412. 17:28know keeping its scope relatively tight
  413. 17:31Cloud stack isn't wasn't ever going to
  414. 17:33provide its own object storage mechanism
  415. 17:36so what cloud Stack's got here is a
  416. 17:38framework which allows easy connection
  417. 17:42of any object storage any S3 uh
  418. 17:45compliant object storage at the back so
  419. 17:47we're starting with providers for minio
  420. 17:50the seph provider is being uh created by
  421. 17:53one of our good friends in the community
  422. 17:55as as as we speak but we expect actually
  423. 17:58I know of some other vendors who are now
  424. 18:00looking at creating providers all of
  425. 18:03that is abstracted from the end user the
  426. 18:05end user just goes to cloudstack and
  427. 18:08sees buckets adds data to them reades
  428. 18:10data from them uh deletes files do does
  429. 18:13whatever they want to do the fact it's
  430. 18:15being provided by a third party Object
  431. 18:18Store that's academic that's completely
  432. 18:20abstracted away from the user so again
  433. 18:22it's that framework model which is very
  434. 18:24similar to the backup and Recovery
  435. 18:26framework we've had for a few years
  436. 18:28we're not doing Cloud isn't doing the
  437. 18:30heavy lift we let somebody who's got uh
  438. 18:34an established product do that but Cloud
  439. 18:36just presents it as one uh unified
  440. 18:40API uh so as I say yeah we've got
  441. 18:43providers for minio and sefs in progress
  442. 18:45there is also a simulator uh provider
  443. 18:48that can be used if if anybody's playing
  444. 18:49around with this and hasn't actually got
  445. 18:51an object store there is also an object
  446. 18:54browser a UI browser in the cloudstack
  447. 18:57UI so you can you you can browse all of
  448. 18:59the the the objects in a bucket uh admin
  449. 19:02configures the actual uh object storage
  450. 19:05provider itself and that technology at
  451. 19:08the back minio seph whatever is doing
  452. 19:11all of the hard work so it's doing all
  453. 19:13of the storage management the
  454. 19:14replication security backup cloud Stacks
  455. 19:16just giving people an interface into
  456. 19:19that it supports most common features
  457. 19:22you know quotas for buckets encryption
  458. 19:24versioning uh bucket policy public
  459. 19:27private that can all reconfigured
  460. 19:29through cloudstack and it that then gets
  461. 19:31backed off to the to the
  462. 19:33provider couple of screenshots there so
  463. 19:36you see over on the left as well as
  464. 19:38volumes and volume snapshots in storage
  465. 19:40we've now got buckets this would be a
  466. 19:41user creating this they can create a
  467. 19:43bucket specified cryption versioning Etc
  468. 19:46and off they go and then we've got an
  469. 19:48object browser which would let them uh
  470. 19:51uh drag and drop files in and out of it
  471. 19:54obviously when they create the bucket
  472. 19:56they also get an end point or pre-signed
  473. 19:58end point so they can actually access it
  474. 19:59as as as proper object storage as
  475. 20:03well cloudstock cloudstack snapshot copy
  476. 20:07oh I could hardly say that Marco it's
  477. 20:09quite a long- winded one right uh this
  478. 20:12is a weird one because actually there's
  479. 20:14not a lot to see here and it's arguably
  480. 20:17a very minor feature uh the reason Marco
  481. 20:20and I have selected it is because is a
  482. 20:22minor feature which actually lets you do
  483. 20:25some very significant things and really
  484. 20:28all this is is the ability for cloud
  485. 20:32stack now when it takes a a
  486. 20:34snapshot uh and that could be any type
  487. 20:37of snapshot to automatically copy that
  488. 20:41to a second Zone okay that doesn't sound
  489. 20:44massive and it's not a massive piece of
  490. 20:46functionality but that does open up all
  491. 20:49sorts of options for cloud stack around
  492. 20:51disaster recovery and Disaster Recovery
  493. 20:53as a service in fact I forget who it was
  494. 20:56somebody did a talk I think it was was
  495. 20:58Alex at the Clack conference in uh
  496. 21:00November in Paris about a solution he
  497. 21:04had got for Disaster Recovery as a
  498. 21:06service using this feature which was
  499. 21:08which was was coming at the time and
  500. 21:11with a little bit of thinking at both
  501. 21:12ends in terms of what you do with that
  502. 21:15snapshot copy how you would recover from
  503. 21:17it this is a very basic disaster res
  504. 21:20recovery Sol Disaster Recovery as a
  505. 21:23service solution just by having this
  506. 21:25snapshot copy I mean it's uh not a lot
  507. 21:28to see I mean that's uh taking a new
  508. 21:31snapshot on the left you've just now got
  509. 21:33this new option where you can also copy
  510. 21:34it to a zone for recurring snapshot the
  511. 21:37same or you can go and press a button
  512. 21:38and copy an existing snapshot so you end
  513. 21:41up with a copy of that snapshot in a
  514. 21:43second Zone second availability zone so
  515. 21:46that's opening up a lot of stuff around
  516. 21:48Disaster Recovery as a
  517. 21:50service and there's a little bit more
  518. 21:52detail I think that diagram will be in
  519. 21:55the 419 documentation about exactly how
  520. 21:58it's doing that us it's using the the
  521. 22:00secondary storage VM to actually do the
  522. 22:03the the the heavy shift of the
  523. 22:06copying okay scheduled instance life
  524. 22:09cycle operations
  525. 22:11uh why we didn't have these earlier I
  526. 22:14don't know but this is you know a very
  527. 22:16simple idea which is to be able to
  528. 22:18create a schedule against an instance uh
  529. 22:21or multiple schedules against an
  530. 22:23instance and perform some sort of life
  531. 22:26cycle operation on that schedule
  532. 22:28classic example I need to reboot all my
  533. 22:31database servers at midnight after
  534. 22:33they've been patched bang off you go
  535. 22:35create a schedule midnight these servers
  536. 22:38at the moment it supports start stop
  537. 22:40reboot and then the forced options
  538. 22:42around all of those also opens up ideas
  539. 22:46around power saving right I mean yes
  540. 22:49Cloud stack has got autoscaling and that
  541. 22:51would really be the way of scaling up
  542. 22:53and down according to demand but if
  543. 22:55you've got demand you know is
  544. 22:58happening at specific times of the day
  545. 23:01you could do it arguably a more
  546. 23:03old-fashioned way which is to set
  547. 23:04schedules against machines and shut them
  548. 23:06down at certain times of the day it's
  549. 23:07saving power if you're a consumer of a
  550. 23:10cloudstack cloud and it's being charged
  551. 23:12hourly you're going to save yourself
  552. 23:13money right uh but yeah this is just the
  553. 23:16idea that you can set schedules multiple
  554. 23:18schedules against an instance uh to
  555. 23:21actually uh undertake any of those
  556. 23:26actions okay nearly there with the
  557. 23:28features that Marco and I have chosen o
  558. 23:30or2 authentication just to make life
  559. 23:33people uh easier for people uh again
  560. 23:36this is a framework there's an O or2
  561. 23:39authentication framework has been
  562. 23:41created which would allow any O2
  563. 23:44provider as long as uh a provider could
  564. 23:47be written for it uh to be used for
  565. 23:50authentication in in Cloud St at the
  566. 23:53moment there's support for Google and
  567. 23:55GitHub I believe but we're EXP expecting
  568. 23:58other community members other users to
  569. 24:00to create some other providers that that
  570. 24:01suit them in the future uh plugins I say
  571. 24:05only for for Google and GitHub at the
  572. 24:07moment very very simple to configure uh
  573. 24:11and you see from the screenshot there
  574. 24:13you can now sign in with GitHub we could
  575. 24:14sign in with Google it's worth
  576. 24:17mentioning I mean one of the reasons I
  577. 24:20mean o 2 is obviously a secure
  578. 24:22authentication mechanism but one of the
  579. 24:25drivers for people towards o 2 is is
  580. 24:27bringing in user data at registration at
  581. 24:31the beginning uh so you know when you're
  582. 24:33signing up for something it's great
  583. 24:34because it takes all your information
  584. 24:35from GitHub from from Google or wherever
  585. 24:38and brings it in at the moment that
  586. 24:40isn't supported in uh the cloud set
  587. 24:43integration and the reason that isn't
  588. 24:45supported is cloudstack does not have
  589. 24:47self-registration uh it hasn't ever uh
  590. 24:51and it doesn't for security reasons that
  591. 24:53might be something that changes in the
  592. 24:54future in which case the O2 stuff would
  593. 24:57would would uh quickly evolve to to to
  594. 25:01uh to work with that but because cloud
  595. 25:03has no self sign up you can't use o ool
  596. 25:06to for self sign up because there's no
  597. 25:07concept of self sign
  598. 25:09up okay there the the features that
  599. 25:12Marco and I really liked the look of I
  600. 25:14think we've gone through about eight uh
  601. 25:16there uh We've also got some other ones
  602. 25:20which didn't you know we also really
  603. 25:22like but didn't really have time to go
  604. 25:24through in sort of detail today um and
  605. 25:27again you I think 36 in total we still
  606. 25:29haven't got all of them just let me
  607. 25:31highlight some of these uh there's a new
  608. 25:33feature for granular storage management
  609. 25:36of secondary storage so you can actually
  610. 25:38get down to file file level on secondary
  611. 25:41storage uh to to manage that storage
  612. 25:44through the cloudstack UI and API you
  613. 25:47can now shut cloudstack down safely okay
  614. 25:50and it will clear out its cues clear its
  615. 25:52jobs and uh shut its down itself down in
  616. 25:55a graceful way and I know anybody who
  617. 25:58supports a cloudsight environment and
  618. 25:59regularly has to restart Services
  619. 26:01they'll be thankful of that we've got a
  620. 26:04new dashboard you'll see that straight
  621. 26:05away when we when we do the demo uh
  622. 26:08capsi which is the cppy provider for
  623. 26:10Cuban
  624. 26:1180s uh that's been more tightly
  625. 26:15integrated with the uh cloudstack cuber
  626. 26:18service so they're now aware of each
  627. 26:20other so in the Clack Cuban 80s service
  628. 26:23you can see all of your Cuban 80s
  629. 26:26clusters not just the ones created
  630. 26:28through the Cuban at service we're now
  631. 26:30supping Vere 8 uh which is great
  632. 26:33although how long we'll need to continue
  633. 26:35to cons to support VMware for I don't
  634. 26:37know that's anybody's guess at the
  635. 26:39moment uh we've got uh some new storage
  636. 26:42providers uh the guys over at AT&T I
  637. 26:45hope they don't mind me name checking
  638. 26:46them I'd like to say thanks uh they've
  639. 26:48contributed support for HP Primera and
  640. 26:51pure flash array uh which is fantastic
  641. 26:53storage platform obviously they're
  642. 26:55they're using so we've now got managed
  643. 26:56storage for for both both of those
  644. 26:58there's a new more flexible model for
  645. 27:01for for tags uh for host and storage
  646. 27:04pools uh and the store poool guys uh
  647. 27:09have have created kbm host ha
  648. 27:11specifically for store poool and there
  649. 27:14there's more than that list so you know
  650. 27:16if you've got one action after you've
  651. 27:18watched this uh watch this webinar go
  652. 27:21away look at the release notes go and
  653. 27:22have a look at the the full list of new
  654. 27:24features because we certainly haven't
  655. 27:25covered them all today
  656. 27:29okay I think it's probably time for for
  657. 27:31a demo uh we're working I think to using
  658. 27:35release candidate three or release
  659. 27:37candidate 4 because the official uh
  660. 27:39release hasn't actually hit the streets
  661. 27:42although it probably has by the time we
  662. 27:43finished doing this webinar uh Marco and
  663. 27:46we're going to go through uh some of the
  664. 27:48headlines the VMware to KVM migration uh
  665. 27:51KVM import vnf appliances and cloudstack
  666. 27:55object storage
  667. 27:58over to you Marco let's start showing
  668. 28:01the last feature you talk about it's the
  669. 28:05AL 2 authentication so uh let me
  670. 28:08navigate with with as a user to do
  671. 28:13something inside the cloud stack so I am
  672. 28:15already authenticated with jiub in that
  673. 28:18case so in the login page of cloud stack
  674. 28:22just click and I am inside of cloud
  675. 28:26stack and so I manage and now that's the
  676. 28:30shortest demo ever right
  677. 28:33Marco it's really easier and and so you
  678. 28:37have here the new UI it's amazing why G
  679. 28:41is really you have our our information
  680. 28:44about your environment consolidate in
  681. 28:47the dashboard page so here you have the
  682. 28:50number of instance and volum is gas
  683. 28:53Network compute storage everything on
  684. 28:57that page right yeah that's the user
  685. 29:00dashboard you've got there Marco right
  686. 29:02exactly yeah this is the user dashboard
  687. 29:04yeah yeah and there's also a I guess
  688. 29:07when you log on as admin later we'll see
  689. 29:09the new admin dashboard as well let me
  690. 29:12show a feure here it's a as a user let's
  691. 29:17Object Store it's a very interesting
  692. 29:20feature so it's already connected and
  693. 29:23created the provider here using
  694. 29:26Mino so
  695. 29:28let me just create a test
  696. 29:32one here okay okay and with one giga I
  697. 29:38make it public gios
  698. 29:40okay so which you
  699. 29:43want Alex is talking here so here I have
  700. 29:48the bucket I can browse so and wead a
  701. 29:51file for
  702. 29:53example let me just get a file to put
  703. 29:56inside that there maybe an image
  704. 30:00so got it yeah here is the
  705. 30:05image
  706. 30:06so I can add a power
  707. 30:15value and N Load so here I am and if I
  708. 30:19navigate to
  709. 30:21this I get the link to use as a p let me
  710. 30:24copy
  711. 30:25this address
  712. 30:28open a
  713. 30:31new and so it's downloaded here you know
  714. 30:36that was that was the pre-signed link
  715. 30:38you Ed right yeah yes it's very very
  716. 30:41easy
  717. 30:42to to use it and for example using
  718. 30:45application or something to user
  719. 30:47download in in the application layer so
  720. 30:50it's a really cool uh features feature
  721. 30:55so um
  722. 30:58from uh let let's talk a little bit
  723. 31:00about
  724. 31:01vnf I think it's interesting feature you
  725. 31:04have here a user wi navigate to the
  726. 31:07network has a new Option here is z vnf
  727. 31:09Appliance so I I already have a PF sense
  728. 31:14created here I can go to there and so I
  729. 31:18have the end points to to manage
  730. 31:21directly in the PF sense UI to for
  731. 31:25example go inside
  732. 31:28and I think
  733. 31:30admin it's h PF sens is I don't remember
  734. 31:35password maybe it's it no
  735. 31:38password I forgot to do password by the
  736. 31:41way very secure Mar Cloud stack Cloud
  737. 31:45stack I think it is yeah it
  738. 31:50is so I can get the control as a user of
  739. 31:54my own Fire Control and set up it as as
  740. 31:57I want for example if I do some load
  741. 31:59balance or some specific uh rule for the
  742. 32:02firewall something else I can C Direct
  743. 32:05on thef sense it not support on the PF
  744. 32:08sense for example go here if if my
  745. 32:14provider let can let available to me for
  746. 32:16example others like Flex one and microti
  747. 32:21and C quaza F5 big IP load balancer and
  748. 32:27others it's AOS of and these are
  749. 32:30templates that the cloud admin has
  750. 32:32created based on those particular images
  751. 32:35of those vnfs right yeah just to show a
  752. 32:37little bit how it works for example you
  753. 32:39explain in the presentation about the
  754. 32:41network setup and there stuff that is H
  755. 32:45it's set on the template right so when
  756. 32:48you can go here for example I want two
  757. 32:51Nicks of three Nicks for this uh this uh
  758. 32:56let me get a another one think plate is
  759. 32:59a micro tick here okay so I get this
  760. 33:03three one two Ls here because it two l
  761. 33:08so the one and the L number one okay so
  762. 33:12here I can select who will be the Lan my
  763. 33:16network with the name one and the
  764. 33:20Lan so and that Network there that
  765. 33:23you're choosing that's just a cloudstack
  766. 33:24network right an L2 Network or
  767. 33:28related with theet the network that the
  768. 33:31vnf appliance need needed to be related
  769. 33:34with the cloud stack
  770. 33:36Network as well right Define a name
  771. 33:41firewall Z2 and so it's
  772. 33:46like and create a virtual machine so
  773. 33:50it's very simple yeah and that what
  774. 33:52that's doing so people know that that's
  775. 33:54going in creting a new instance of the
  776. 33:56side as you specified it's using the
  777. 33:58template but it's then doing these ex
  778. 34:00extra bits which is configuring uh all
  779. 34:03of the interfaces as you've specified
  780. 34:05it's giving the user the endpoint for
  781. 34:07administration uh and importantly it's
  782. 34:10letting service providers build for for
  783. 34:13usage of that Appliance right exactly it
  784. 34:17it let the users uh have uh uh is free
  785. 34:22to select the the appliance they needed
  786. 34:25to specifically use for example and use
  787. 34:28as a service then so we just install and
  788. 34:31use it and config configure as they want
  789. 34:35you know they us no needed to not not
  790. 34:37not depending off physical Appliance to
  791. 34:39the dad or or the service provider to
  792. 34:42the D dad by themselves you know it's a
  793. 34:44really cool feature as well okay so G
  794. 34:48let's explain a little bit now about
  795. 34:51some Administration stuffs
  796. 34:53here I think you have for example a nice
  797. 34:57f with dis advant of BR vmir many user
  798. 35:01want to an alternative to VM right
  799. 35:06correct Marco I was gonna say before you
  800. 35:08do could we have a quick look at the the
  801. 35:11template side of the
  802. 35:13vnf yeah for sure yeah you've show
  803. 35:16you've shown us the user experience
  804. 35:18right which is very simple but I guess
  805. 35:19you need to configure let me take this
  806. 35:22PF sense here just to show the settings
  807. 35:26so the user here now can for example uh
  808. 35:30select the NX uh the the vnf needed to
  809. 35:34Havey win is created if you need to add
  810. 35:38another one you have a specific uh
  811. 35:40window here uh to do that and also so
  812. 35:44you can for example set the method to
  813. 35:47access the end point the port the vendor
  814. 35:50the version what is the default web
  815. 35:53password and web user not to only that
  816. 35:57about the password for example you can
  817. 35:59select you can also inform the users the
  818. 36:03SSG uh password also the user the user
  819. 36:08the SSG user for example to it's it's
  820. 36:12it's just to show to the user the
  821. 36:14default information the default
  822. 36:16credential and the the instance is ready
  823. 36:19to the instance the vnf appliance
  824. 36:22created you be set you know that's it
  825. 36:26and then creating a new template similar
  826. 36:29to creating an existing it's a very
  827. 36:32similar G so uh they you can see it's
  828. 36:35like a h a template the uni difference
  829. 36:39here is select the vnf so as a template
  830. 36:43type okay and if you do that it then
  831. 36:45gives you all the options for the
  832. 36:46network interface and the parameters
  833. 36:48that are going in once this is created
  834. 36:50you go to the should the should the
  835. 36:52templating so set the the the
  836. 36:55information you you want to about the
  837. 36:57vnf get it well let's go to the this is
  838. 37:02a you know previously you have the
  839. 37:05VMware injection G where it's possible
  840. 37:08to get a v spere cluster inject inside
  841. 37:12Cloud stack so now the community
  842. 37:16extended this functionality for other
  843. 37:19interesting things uh basically related
  844. 37:22with realy Community get this there is a
  845. 37:25many user want to migrate from VMware to
  846. 37:28others platforms so and Cloud stch now
  847. 37:32it's a very strong platform to help
  848. 37:35users that needed to reduce these costs
  849. 37:38related with VMware so the VMware you
  850. 37:41continue using for example you have the
  851. 37:43manager manager existence like before
  852. 37:46that so that functionality has been
  853. 37:47there for years anyway that's the
  854. 37:49ability to bring in from a existing V
  855. 37:51center right yeah when I select for
  856. 37:54example V more I can also now migrate
  857. 37:58existing instance VMware instance to KVM
  858. 38:04yeah so you have we have two options
  859. 38:08here for example if I have a
  860. 38:13cluster configured registered in Cloud
  861. 38:17stack I can select existing cluster here
  862. 38:21and so I can select the Zone yeah the
  863. 38:24data center yeah to list the instance so
  864. 38:29the will be here so there in there
  865. 38:31instances that are already managed by
  866. 38:33cloudstack it's already controlling the
  867. 38:36Venter but you're going to change the
  868. 38:38hypervisor type of those instances from
  869. 38:40VMware to KVM right exactly in the user
  870. 38:44case in in this scenario for example
  871. 38:46exactly to get
  872. 38:48uh V VM more viral machine and convert
  873. 38:52it in a KVM virtual machine I think it's
  874. 38:55a really interesting feature for the
  875. 38:58user also it's possible to manage for
  876. 39:01example if I don't have the V you're
  877. 39:03connected with cloudstack is not managed
  878. 39:05the class is not managed by Cloud stack
  879. 39:08so you need to just insert the
  880. 39:10credentials here the VMR V Center host
  881. 39:14you have a typo here but you need to fix
  882. 39:16it after so uh the V Center data center
  883. 39:20the username password and then
  884. 39:23connecting list it's very easy basically
  885. 39:27any any VMware VM that's in a V sensor
  886. 39:30we can whether it's in clat or or
  887. 39:33external clat we can point at it get the
  888. 39:35VM convert it to KVM and it goes into a
  889. 39:38kbm clust yeah yeah yeah it's a it's a
  890. 39:41very interesting feature here for
  891. 39:43example I have some uh instance VM or
  892. 39:46instance ruining and on this cluster
  893. 39:49here I select okay so let me get this
  894. 39:52first one here is a rock Lenox 64 oh
  895. 39:56let's let's get the Microsoft Windows
  896. 39:59here
  897. 40:01import it's important message here
  898. 40:04ruining Windows VM need to be I mention
  899. 40:09that before yeah yeah let me get this
  900. 40:13power on Rock Linux here so it is
  901. 40:18important to say G first a warning here
  902. 40:23it's if you one to convert a
  903. 40:28VMware virtual machine into a KVM
  904. 40:31instance it's better to do that with
  905. 40:35powered off instance okay but Linux you
  906. 40:38can do it but the time you be longer
  907. 40:43than I sto it uh virtu instance okay so
  908. 40:47it's possible but maybe not recommended
  909. 40:50and take will take long yeah exactly
  910. 40:52it's possible but it's not recommend
  911. 40:53exactly for example let me Define a name
  912. 40:55here for for this instance this this
  913. 40:57field here it's a the display name you
  914. 41:00showing into the cloud stack you have
  915. 41:03another type of here is not a host name
  916. 41:06it's a the instance host name so you'll
  917. 41:11be fix it after you can Define the VMR
  918. 41:15uh the the instance host name here to be
  919. 41:19registered in internal
  920. 41:21DNS also you have you have uh Al it's
  921. 41:25possible to select a domain and a
  922. 41:28project and account it's a multitenant
  923. 41:31platform you need to do the stuff as
  924. 41:34well also have two options here to
  925. 41:38select a KVM host class to perform the
  926. 41:43conversion so I have two hostes in this
  927. 41:46cluster so but if you don't select this
  928. 41:50you'll
  929. 41:51be randomic to do that random okay yeah
  930. 41:55exactly that's that's that's the host
  931. 41:58that's not the destination host that's
  932. 42:01the host that's actually going to do you
  933. 42:02perform the process with using vert v2v
  934. 42:07yeah which is I guess pretty CPU
  935. 42:09intensive yeah exactly because you
  936. 42:11needed to do a lot of conversion Etc
  937. 42:13memory intens usage as well Etc this
  938. 42:17this second options here is to select
  939. 42:21where you want to use as a temporary
  940. 42:26store of the copy you can select the
  941. 42:30second storage or primary storage so if
  942. 42:34you select for example primary storage
  943. 42:37you have a list here and if you select
  944. 42:39the second you'll be us using the defa
  945. 42:42secondary storage one if you know don't
  946. 42:45select anything you'll be use the
  947. 42:47secondary storage to do
  948. 42:48that okay so as this VM is power on and
  949. 42:54you have a 512 megabits of memory so
  950. 43:00it's important to say
  951. 43:02that as the VM you will be converted
  952. 43:05into a
  953. 43:06KVM I can select any computer offering
  954. 43:10but it's important to check about the
  955. 43:13capacity the the the Intensive how much
  956. 43:16intensive memory for example the
  957. 43:19application you have running inside the
  958. 43:22the VM you need so it's important to
  959. 43:24take attention on this detail
  960. 43:27okay so let me select this one and so
  961. 43:31there is another options about a network
  962. 43:34all duplicate Mac address you can
  963. 43:37maintain the same Mac address you use
  964. 43:40you are using in the uh VM instance but
  965. 43:46it's important for example for
  966. 43:48application that requires the license
  967. 43:51requires the mech address to to own for
  968. 43:54example it's a or some entry in the DNS
  969. 43:58something like that you I'm guessing
  970. 44:00it's going to be pretty dangerous uh if
  971. 44:02you if you use it you don't need it
  972. 44:05that's why it's off by default right at
  973. 44:08the end you have here the network by
  974. 44:10default select the network the VM is
  975. 44:13running so or you can select another one
  976. 44:17you want you
  977. 44:18know and Lou sheet in background the
  978. 44:23process to convert yeah
  979. 44:26now I've SE I've seen this running and I
  980. 44:28know this webinar is going to be
  981. 44:30finished by the time that will be
  982. 44:31converted it's not an instant process
  983. 44:34right on the size of the machine not an
  984. 44:36instance process
  985. 44:37exactly in the same page here G about
  986. 44:40import and exporting since we have
  987. 44:43KVM so what can I do it's is very
  988. 44:47similar to the VMware process but you
  989. 44:52have it's more extensible for example I
  990. 44:55can I I already have my KVM cluster
  991. 44:58configurated into cloudstack so in that
  992. 45:02case I just
  993. 45:04select the Zone the Pod the cluster and
  994. 45:07so I have the list of instance not
  995. 45:12managed by cloudstack and the manager as
  996. 45:15well I can select for example this one
  997. 45:17to manage so let Marco let's just make
  998. 45:20that clear to because I understand this
  999. 45:21so this is you've got a KVM cluster in
  1000. 45:25Cloud set it's got whatever you've got
1001. 45:27there six machines in it six instances
1002. 45:30but you've also got one that is an
1003. 45:32independent kbm instance nothing to do
1004. 45:34with cloud and all you're doing here is
1005. 45:36pulling that into cloud is that correct
  1006. 45:39and it's there is many options here D
1007. 45:41the first options is manage or manage
1008. 45:44existing instance into Cloud stack you
1009. 45:46already have for example the cluster KVM
1010. 45:49cluster configure add inside Cloud stack
1011. 45:52and then you can manage and manage
1012. 45:53instance the second option is
  1013. 45:56is I'm Mist there you
1014. 45:59go the danger of uh the danger of using
1015. 46:03Mac the same Mac address right exactly
1016. 46:06that yeah uh important instance from
1017. 46:09remote KVM that's the point you want to
1018. 46:12to to to explain right J you need to
1019. 46:15define the host here the username hoot
1020. 46:19for example the password and we where
1021. 46:24will be the temporary uh path to store
1022. 46:28the Keo file in the Des in the in the
1023. 46:32Target Hol in that case and then you
1024. 46:35select here where which zone you want to
1025. 46:40uh import the instance yeah okay so that
  1026. 46:44is that's where you've got just a KVM
1027. 46:46host nothing to do with Cloud stack
1028. 46:48nothing related with go and get an
  1029. 46:51instance that's why you need credentials
  1030. 46:52there because Cloud doesn't know yeah
1031. 46:54bang bring it into CL okay get
1032. 46:56that other option is for example if you
1033. 46:59have some cluster configured in your
1034. 47:02Cloud stack you can import key code to
1035. 47:06image from the local storage disk for
1036. 47:10example but you have also the the the uh
1037. 47:13you can also select it from the shared
1038. 47:16storage for example and and select the
1039. 47:21dis you want and import instance from
  1040. 47:23the
1041. 47:24file nice feature right great features
  1042. 47:28some
1043. 47:29great good is there anything else you
1044. 47:31were going to demo today
1045. 47:33Marco um I think you cover everything
  1046. 47:37maybe a snapshot copy it's a it's a very
  1047. 47:42easy I think it's a simple feature you
1048. 47:45have for example when you select
1049. 47:47something take instant you can select
  1050. 47:50for example the
  1051. 47:52volume and it's a oops it's a
1052. 47:57snapshot instance volume snapshot this
  1053. 48:00one I no it's not here G
  1054. 48:05sorry snap instance in
  1055. 48:10storage volum
1056. 48:13is take a snapshot ah yes here you
1057. 48:16define a name and you can select it the
1058. 48:20snap shop you be always created in the
1059. 48:23ACH Zone and then can select the
1060. 48:27additional one it's very simple you know
  1061. 48:29yeah it's very simple but you know I
  1062. 48:32mentioned this when I was talking
1063. 48:33through the slides but Alex had uh done
1064. 48:36with that which is some work he was
  1065. 48:37doing with a customer I think which was
1066. 48:40around the idea that you can then around
1067. 48:43put some scripting around the end of
1068. 48:45that to actually use that as the
  1069. 48:46foundation of Disaster Recovery as a
  1070. 48:48service so it's a simple feature that
1071. 48:50enables a lot of other stuff the part
1072. 48:53the interesting part in here in theover
1073. 48:55scenario for example the user can Define
1074. 48:58their policies no need to be uh rigid
1075. 49:02policies that from the vendor for
1076. 49:04example yeah yeah I get it I get it
1077. 49:08thank you very much uh we have a a few
1078. 49:10few questions I think probably best we
1079. 49:13won't take those because we needed to uh
1080. 49:15to keep this down to time so we'll we'll
1081. 49:16follow up with some questions on a blog
1082. 49:18or or something like that uh thank you
1083. 49:22people for for for listening this to to
1084. 49:24to this today thank you Marco for for
1085. 49:26the demos uh look out for cloud 419
1086. 49:29release announcements which will be next
1087. 49:31week uh download the release notes you
1088. 49:34know what's there uh and we look forward
1089. 49:36to to speaking to you all about uh your
  1090. 49:38experiences with 419 so thanks for
  1091. 49:40listening thank you
