- 0:05Long before it was [music] famous for
- 0:07wheat, Saskatchewan was hiding a massive
- 0:09secret nearly a kilometer beneath the
- 0:11prairie soil, and it would eventually
- 0:13help feed billions around the world.
- 0:16Discovered by accident in 1943 by
- 0:18drillers searching for oil, this
- 0:20sedimentary mineral became known as pink
- 0:22[music] gold. The vast ancient seabed
- 0:24transformed the province into the land
- 0:26of potash, becoming one of the most
- 0:28important mining regions on Earth.
- 0:30Accessing the pink gold was difficult.
- 0:33Water repeatedly flooded the early
- 0:34shafts, but Saskatchewan miners and
- 0:37engineers refused to rest. Using
- 0:39revolutionary ground freezing
- 0:40technology, they conquered the rock and
- 0:42carved vast underground cities.
- 0:45Today, the province produces roughly 1/3
- 0:47of the global supply, anchoring the
- 0:49fertilizer industry and supporting
- 0:51modern agriculture.
