- 0:00When you hear that this new phone in
- 0:012026 has a custom RGB notification
- 0:04light, it I wouldn't blame you if your
- 0:06first thought was, "Oh, great. When I
- 0:08get a spam call, it'll go red. When I
- 0:11get an email, it'll go green. When I get
- 0:14a zel, it'll go blue. When I get a
- 0:17Venmo, it'll go purple." And they have
- 0:18you have all these ideas about things
- 0:19you'll do with different apps. None of
- 0:21those things are possible as of right
- 0:22now.
- 0:23>> None of Yeah,
- 0:23>> just have the technology.
- 0:25>> Yeah. 20 the 2017 Note 8. It was like
- 0:29yellow Snapchat, blue Twitter, green
- 0:31messages.
- 0:32>> Oh, the minimal phone does this.
- 0:34>> No way. Really? Does it?
- 0:40>> Yo, what is up people of the internet?
- 0:41Welcome back to another episode of the
- 0:44Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm
- 0:45Marquez.
- 0:46>> I'm Andrew.
- 0:46>> I'm David.
- 0:47>> And this is a jump scare if you're not
- 0:51uh in the audio only version because we
- 0:52are definitely in a different place. We
- 0:54are in a very different place. We
- 0:56skipped the pixel event
- 0:58>> and we're in Spain
- 1:00>> for a good reason. Great delivery.
- 1:02>> Maybe not the reason you expect. You'll
- 1:04find out very well. We'll probably talk
- 1:05about it, but you'll find out very soon.
- 1:06>> We should just You posted it on your
- 1:08story.
- 1:08>> Yeah.
- 1:09>> Yeah. We're in Spain because uh we
- 1:11wanted to go watch the total solar
- 1:14eclipse that came through here as of the
- 1:16day of recording yesterday. Not only did
- 1:19we watch it, we recorded a podcast
- 1:21episode right in front of it and it
- 1:24turned out pretty incredible. I'm very
- 1:25excited for you guys to see it. It is
- 1:27why you will see that very soon in not
- 1:29the same location but the same country.
- 1:31Anyway,
- 1:32>> so subscribed.
- 1:33>> So yeah, definitely if you haven't
- 1:34gotten subscribed, this is a great time
- 1:36to get subscribed because that will be
- 1:38showing up in your subbox very soon. Uh
- 1:39but we still got to talk about the
- 1:41Google stuff. We still do have on the
- 1:44tech event of the week. Um, but first,
- 1:48did they even test this?
- 1:50>> I have one that's
- 1:51>> Speaking of Google stuff.
- 1:52>> Speaking of Google stuff, this is
- 1:54extremely relevant.
- 1:55>> Um, okay. So, I've had this written down
- 1:57for a while, but this actually timing
- 1:59wise works perfectly. So,
- 2:02>> my did they even test this is that my
- 2:05Android Auto has switched to Gemini.
- 2:06>> Mhm.
- 2:07>> Which at first I was like, fine,
- 2:09whatever. It's just a different voice.
- 2:11Um, but lately it has been
- 2:15>> famously just a different voice. Nothing
- 2:16else different about different voice,
- 2:18different name. Um,
- 2:20>> it's been messing up left and right for
- 2:22me. And I think it's partially because
- 2:25of that I'm speaking to it like the
- 2:28assistant.
- 2:29>> I'm not like Gemini. So, when I first
- 2:31got it, I was like, I don't like this. I
- 2:33don't like change. But, I gave it a shot
- 2:35and it did some pretty impressive
- 2:36things. Like, I mostly use Android Auto.
- 2:40uh for when I have an idea of something
- 2:42that I need to do in the car and I can
- 2:44add it to my task app. You guys all
- 2:46>> I'm still a task app user. Google task
- 2:50>> hard and probably the most I add to it
- 2:52is like in my car cuz I'm like I have to
- 2:53do this thing today. I have to do this
- 2:54thing when I get home. And the other day
- 2:56I realized like
- 2:58>> I need to start my snowblower once a
- 3:00month just to make sure it continues to
- 3:02run for winter. And I said to Gemini,
- 3:04"Hey, can you set a reoccurring task for
- 3:06the last Saturday of every month to tell
- 3:08me to start my snowb blower done?" I was
- 3:11like, "Whoa, Gemini rules
- 3:13>> in your car."
- 3:13>> In my car lately,
- 3:15>> I've never done anything that
- 3:16complicated from my car.
- 3:17>> So lately,
- 3:20it can't get anything right. Um, I wrote
- 3:23down I went back in the history because
- 3:24that's a fun thing with Gemini as soon
- 3:26as you can see your history and I wrote
- 3:27down a couple of the things I asked it
- 3:29to do. So, in the old speak, what you
- 3:31would do is you would say, "Hey, Geek."
- 3:33>> Yeah. Remind me. And it would say, "What
- 3:35would you like me to remind you of?" And
- 3:36then you say the next thing. So, I said,
- 3:38"Uh, hey, remind me." I said, "What
- 3:40would you like?" I said, "Find ice cream
- 3:42cake for Claire." And then it said, "I
- 3:44can't find anything right now."
- 3:47>> Got confused.
- 3:48>> It got confused. Then the next one, I
- 3:50said, "Remind me." What would you like
- 3:52to be reminded of? I said, "Message
- 3:53Nathan about podcast outlines." said, "I
- 3:56don't find I don't see a Nathan in your
- 3:58contacts list."
- 4:00>> And then I did
- 4:01>> I was taking Okay.
- 4:02>> And then I did another one. I said, "Set
- 4:03my disc golf roster. This is something I
- 4:05do for a weekly fantasy league I'm in."
- 4:07And it just errored out. It didn't do
- 4:10anything. So my
- 4:11>> clarify you do know a Nathan.
- 4:13>> I do know a Nathan.
- 4:14>> Okay.
- 4:14>> I just don't have a context. So what I
- 4:16think is happening is with the old
- 4:18speak,
- 4:19>> if the first word of the task is an
- 4:22actionable word,
- 4:24>> it's forgetting the context of the
- 4:26conversation that we're having
- 4:28>> and just trying to then do the action,
- 4:31>> right?
- 4:31>> Did you have you tried it all as one
- 4:34instead of two?
- 4:34>> I haven't, but I'm pretty sure the new
- 4:37thing should be able to do what the old
- 4:39thing should have done.
- 4:40>> Yeah.
- 4:40>> Yeah.
- 4:41>> Yeah. Yeah, I guess it's the new one's
- 4:42supposed to be like I mean they're all
- 4:43supposed to be this but they're supposed
- 4:44to be like natural language. Just talk
- 4:46to it like a person. So instead of the
- 4:48old speak as you say uh first let me
- 4:51ceue up the reminder thing and then let
- 4:53me give it the reminder.
- 4:54>> Uh you got to talk to it like a grandma
- 4:56who doesn't know that that's the old
- 4:58speak and you just go hey send me a
- 4:59reminder to text Nathan and blah blah
- 5:01blah and then maybe it'll work better.
- 5:02So, I've thought of that and I agree.
- 5:05But also, the other thing New Gemini is
- 5:07supposed to do is understand context of
- 5:09conversations better. And when the
- 5:11conversation is you ask me what you want
- 5:14me to remind you of and I say the thing
- 5:17I if if you were like, "Andrew, can you
- 5:21uh after work I really need you to
- 5:23remind me something?" I was like, "Cool.
- 5:24What do you need me to remind me of?"
- 5:25And you're like, "Go to Ultimate
- 5:28Practice."
- 5:29>> Mhm. And then I said,
- 5:31>> "Where's where's or I said like
- 5:34>> how would you like to get that?" Like
- 5:36>> I completely forgot that you just asked
- 5:38me to remind you of it and then I'm just
- 5:40like talking about ultimate if that's
- 5:42not natural anymore. And especially when
- 5:44like the whole thing is like context.
- 5:46It's supposed to remember full
- 5:47conversations and we're not even
- 5:49>> Yeah. We're not even stopping the uh the
- 5:52conversation in there. I'm answering it
- 5:54at the same time.
- 5:54>> That's totally valid. You know what this
- 5:55reminds me of though?
- 5:56>> What's that? in the Google presentation
- 5:58cuz we've seen this before with some
- 5:59demos, but the rambler thing.
- 6:01>> Yes.
- 6:01>> Where you'll be talking to it and it's
- 6:03supposed to do speech to text. And I
- 6:05thought about this. It's there are
- 6:06several things that you can do that are
- 6:08purely natural language where you be
- 6:10like,
- 6:11>> "Hey, uh, I just wanted to say, uh,
- 6:13thanks for coming. I mean, uh, it was
- 6:16cool to have you there." and you start
- 6:18talking and then deleting things and
- 6:19then saying more things and it realizes
- 6:21you didn't want to say that and then
- 6:23like takes it back and then adds a new
- 6:24thing because of the way you're talking
- 6:26to it
- 6:27>> and that's really cool but I always
- 6:29wondered what if you wanted to what if
- 6:30you wanted it to actually say yes
- 6:32>> the delete thing part
- 6:34>> I had that problem already
- 6:36>> really I think that's what's happening
- 6:37to you in like a different way
- 6:40>> where it's it's supposed to hear set a
- 6:43reminder okay and then oh this guy just
- 6:45realized he doesn't want to set a
- 6:46reminder he actually wants wants to
- 6:47message someone
- 6:48>> instead of it's like one big command.
- 6:51>> So, it feels like that's what's
- 6:53happening, I guess, in a funny but
- 6:55impressive way. The one time I just like
- 6:58snapped. I I think it was the like um it
- 7:01was like, "What would you like to be
- 7:02reminded of?" I said, "Send Nathan
- 7:04podcast outlines," it said, "I don't
- 7:06have a Nathan in there. Would you like
- 7:08me to do or would you like me to text
- 7:10something else?" And I said, "No, I want
- 7:11you to set the reminder like I asked you
- 7:13in the first place." and they said set a
- 7:14reminder for and then it did it
- 7:16perfectly.
- 7:17>> Yeah,
- 7:17>> which is hilarious, but apparently you
- 7:19just have to get angry.
- 7:20>> This is like imagine if you could no
- 7:22longer Google things with SEO speak and
- 7:24you had to only talk to things with
- 7:26natural language, which is like using
- 7:28Google when you know how to Google is
- 7:30way faster than talking to an LL
- 7:32>> 100%.
- 7:32>> Cuz you have to type out everything and
- 7:34then wait for it.
- 7:35>> Yeah. And if you can just use keywords
- 7:37with like six keywords, it's so easy for
- 7:39me to find stuff. I just I just use the
- 7:41main big words and then it finds it
- 7:43automatically. But if you have to type
- 7:45out everything, it's like that's so much
- 7:46less efficient.
- 7:47>> That's so funny to think about though
- 7:48that so we we learned Google comes, we
- 7:52learn SEO speak.
- 7:53>> Yeah.
- 7:54>> Natural language comes with Gemini, but
- 7:57when that takes over, are are we all
- 8:00going to be like this would be so much
- 8:01faster if we could just speak
- 8:03>> faster and then we redevelop SEO speak
- 8:06into
- 8:07>> LLM? Yeah. SEO speak is just keywords,
- 8:09right? Yeah. And we if you use keywords,
- 8:12you're dropping all the irrelevant
- 8:13stuff.
- 8:14>> Yeah.
- 8:14>> But now we have to talk to it like in
- 8:16>> all the I would like to find and I wish
- 8:19it would also have
- 8:20>> Now I understand that for most people
- 8:21that never learned SEO speak, you know,
- 8:24>> under a certain age people are like I I
- 8:26don't know. I'll just ask it and it'll
- 8:27tell me.
- 8:28>> Exactly. Like I get that and I totally
- 8:30understand that. And even with the
- 8:31Rambler stuff because oh my god, I've
- 8:32I've had older relatives like try to
- 8:35talk to these like home assistants and
- 8:38stuff and they just they're like, "Hey
- 8:40gee, um could you uh turn my lights on
- 8:45maybe I guess like maybe tomorrow at at
- 8:483." And if that if that works, that's
- 8:50amazing, right? That's incredible. But
- 8:52but honestly, like to your point,
- 8:54Marquez, about the Rambler thing, like
- 8:55I've I've tested this um on a on a on a
- 8:59pixel and when I'm trying to text
- 9:02somebody like this kind of more complex
- 9:04thing, it takes out like all of the the
- 9:07flare of your of your sort of
- 9:10conversational tone. Sometimes you want
- 9:12to use like a very specific kind of like
- 9:14lingo and it makes it a lot more proper
- 9:17that you don't always want to do. Yeah,
- 9:19that was not an issue, but that was
- 9:20something I found which is and I've been
- 9:23thinking about this a lot that like the
- 9:24humanity of this is so randomly deep.
- 9:27The humanity is our imperfections, our
- 9:28inefficiencies.
- 9:31>> They kept using they kept using the
- 9:33example for Rambler as like texting
- 9:35people. I actually don't think that's
- 9:36ever what I'd use it for cuz it doesn't
- 9:37it removes all of the me from the text.
- 9:40I would use it for note takingaking. I
- 9:42would use it for like a really really
- 9:44long reminder that I want to set for
- 9:45myself where it removes the ums and o's
- 9:47and it's very efficient. But for
- 9:48texting, which is what they kept using
- 9:50as a demo, it's so like robotic.
- 9:53>> Yeah. Proper,
- 9:54>> perfect.
- 9:55>> And that's not what I want necessarily
- 9:57from text.
- 9:57>> Totally. Totally. I did use it to say,
- 10:00"What up my G?" And it did keep that.
- 10:02>> It did.
- 10:03>> Okay. It did keep that. So I was happy
- 10:05>> because that's very
- 10:06>> Yeah, I can do that.
- 10:09I do think like for texting the times
- 10:12when I would be using speech to text is
- 10:14when I'm like on the run doing something
- 10:16where I'm like I'm not probably putting
- 10:18much personality into it anyways. It's
- 10:20just like you need information and I
- 10:22need to speak it to you as fast as
- 10:24possible. So then in that case I don't
- 10:26care. But I'm sure there are lots of
- 10:27people, no matter how good Rambler gets,
- 10:29where when you get that text message,
- 10:31you're like, you can tell person typed
- 10:34this, person speech this, like periods,
- 10:37capitalization, everything proper.
- 10:39You're just like,
- 10:40>> oh yeah,
- 10:40>> okay, they just yelled that into their
- 10:41phone.
- 10:42>> It's like you put too much effort into
- 10:43it.
- 10:44>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:44>> You need to put less effort because
- 10:46that's how I know you care.
- 10:47>> Yeah. Also, it's everyone's always, "Oh,
- 10:50did you write this with an LLM? Did you
- 10:52write this with AI?" If you use Rambler,
- 10:54is this now in the gray area of like,
- 10:56well, you did write this yourself, but
- 10:58>> you refined it.
- 10:59>> Kind of.
- 11:00>> You refined it.
- 11:01>> Kind of used Yeah. Yeah. LM.
- 11:02>> They made a weirdly big deal, and we'll
- 11:04get to the Google event in a bit, but
- 11:06they did make a weirdly big deal about
- 11:07the fact that you could add an emoji
- 11:09with your voice, which you could always
- 11:10do. I I've I've done that a lot. I'm
- 11:13always like heart emoji or
- 11:14>> Yeah, I think a lot of people didn't
- 11:16know you could do that before.
- 11:17>> Yeah. I guess I guess it's just
- 11:18reintroducing.
- 11:20Yeah,
- 11:20>> it's like the Apple thing like and you
- 11:22can also It's like well you could do
- 11:23that for years.
- 11:24>> Your iPhone can send text messages.
- 11:26>> Wow.
- 11:27>> Wow.
- 11:27>> Yeah.
- 11:28>> Real quick to go in the first story I
- 11:30have here relating to uh the did they
- 11:33even test this is all people who had
- 11:35Google Assistant got this email over the
- 11:36last week um that starting September
- 11:384th. Google is starting the process of
- 11:40removing access to Google Assistant on
- 11:42your phone, tablet or paired devices.
- 11:44Once the ability is removed, you won't
- 11:46be able to switch back to assistant. Um,
- 11:48>> RIP.
- 11:49>> RIP. There are a couple funny things
- 11:50about this email that I thought. One is
- 11:52the intro sentence says, "Gemini, our
- 11:55next generation AI powered assistant is
- 11:56now the assistant experience on Android
- 11:59asterisk. Uh, Gemini is AI and can make
- 12:02mistakes, including about people." So,
- 12:04great start to the email. Y
- 12:06>> uh the paragraph after that saying
- 12:08assistant will be removed also says if
- 12:11your Android device meets the minimum
- 12:13requirements or and you're in a region
- 12:15where it's available and then just
- 12:17doesn't say what happens if you don't
- 12:18meet those parameters. So I'm not sure
- 12:20if assistant will stay presumably
- 12:24>> or they just
- 12:25>> yeah I guess
- 12:25>> it has to be that right is going to be
- 12:27for extremely old phones. I haven't used
- 12:29assistant in years because phones for
- 12:32the past eight years have all come out
- 12:33with this new maybe not eight years but
- 12:35a long time they all got an update to
- 12:36Gemini.
- 12:38>> So phones with assistant that didn't
- 12:40meet the system requirements for Gemini.
- 12:42I do wonder do they just not have an
- 12:44assistant anymore? Do they shut down the
- 12:46I don't think so. I think they'll just
- 12:47keep Google Assistant temporarily.
- 12:49>> It's got to be so minimal at that point.
- 12:52>> Yeah. Is it like regulatory bodies? Is
- 12:54that the whole reason that they can't
- 12:55change over in some regions? Cuz sort of
- 12:57like how In the EU, you can't use Siri
- 13:00AI yet. And I saw a tweet a couple days
- 13:03ago that was like, I entered the US and
- 13:05I was in the US for one microcond and
- 13:07immediately I got the you can now use
- 13:09Siri AI notification.
- 13:11>> Oh, really? So my guess was language
- 13:14actually cuz like a lot of time when we
- 13:15see these AI things come up, it's like
- 13:17not available in these yet. Um, so I
- 13:20they obviously if they don't have the
- 13:22language supported in Gemini can't
- 13:24>> send a forced upgrade to a region that
- 13:26uses that. I would imagine they'd keep
- 13:28Google Assistant cuz like removing a
- 13:30feature like that when people use it
- 13:32pretty consistently is is kind of
- 13:34insane.
- 13:34>> It is.
- 13:35>> I don't think they do.
- 13:36>> But also has happened before.
- 13:37>> Yeah. With Google.
- 13:38>> It is Google.
- 13:39>> We do have a notably large graveyard of
- 13:41Google products.
- 13:42>> That is true. It's possible. There is a
- 13:44public website.
- 13:44>> Um and the paired devices that includes
- 13:46this where OS headphones, earbuds
- 13:48compatible with Gemini, and vehicles
- 13:50running Android Auto. Oh, so here might
- 13:52be our question to the Android thing.
- 13:54Google uh cars with Google builtin
- 13:56assistant will continue to be the main
- 13:58>> Oh, that's a good spot where assistant
- 14:00is really old or something.
- 14:01>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:02>> So, they're not upgrading those to
- 14:03Gemini.
- 14:04>> No.
- 14:06>> Huh.
- 14:06>> Or not forcing to Gemini.
- 14:08>> Interesting.
- 14:10>> Which is strange.
- 14:11>> Which means assistant then Yeah. That
- 14:12means assistant can still be running.
- 14:14>> But it is strange that that's not
- 14:16changing.
- 14:16>> So fragment
- 14:17>> cuz those are so new you would think
- 14:19Google.
- 14:20>> But maybe just hardware specs on the
- 14:22infotainment system. Yeah,
- 14:24>> crazy
- 14:24>> teams not talking to each other.
- 14:26>> Yeah, like we have cars with Google
- 14:28built in. Um, okay. Well, we should talk
- 14:31about this event.
- 14:32>> Yeah,
- 14:32>> this was a uh an evening event. Google
- 14:35did this thing where the embargos for
- 14:37the hands-on for all of our videos was
- 14:39at 10:00 in the morning Eastern time and
- 14:41then the event announcing everything was
- 14:43at 6:00 p.m. that day. And so there was
- 14:46this 8 hour gap where everyone already
- 14:48had seen all the stuff and we're still
- 14:51waiting for the Google event. Yeah,
- 14:52>> I thought that was a choice. Um,
- 14:54>> that freaked me out cuz we're in Spain
- 14:56with the time difference. I was looking
- 14:57at the calendar and I saw you respond to
- 14:59someone on Slack like
- 15:01>> they said when's the embargo? You said
- 15:03uh 400 p.m. cuz you were or no
- 15:06>> 101
- 15:06>> 10 a.m. talking about Eastern time
- 15:09>> and I was like that's not it. The event
- 15:11is later. That's
- 15:14>> that's so far away. And then had to
- 15:15confirm it. But this is
- 15:17>> I mean we've had it used to be event
- 15:19ends embargo.
- 15:21>> Yeah. Then it started being like event
- 15:23starts embargo which was funny cuz you
- 15:25get all the memes like why is anyone
- 15:26going to watch this because all the
- 15:27reviews are out.
- 15:29>> Yeah. This now
- 15:30>> not an hour not two hours 8 hours
- 15:35before.
- 15:35>> Yeah. Notably event end embargos was
- 15:38always so nebulous because people
- 15:40technically if the public information is
- 15:42out there you're allowed to report on
- 15:44it. And so I I remember like the OnePlus
- 15:466 or the OnePlus 6T and it was so
- 15:48awkward because they would announce the
- 15:50phones but the event wouldn't be over
- 15:52and a bunch of websites would put out
- 15:53their information like as soon as they
- 15:55said this is the OnePlus 6T. So, I
- 15:57remember that flip being switched cuz I
- 15:59remember it would always be uh let's say
- 16:01the event was 10:00 a.m. and it would
- 16:02end at 11:00 a.m. and then the embargo
- 16:05was 11:00 a.m. And so they'd say, "Here
- 16:06is your your hands on, you do the video,
- 16:08your embargo was 11:00 a.m. So, the
- 16:10event would end at like 10:55 and
- 16:12everyone would be like,
- 16:13>> "Can we
- 16:14>> and then at exactly 11:00 a.m. everyone
- 16:16would publish as we were supposed to."
- 16:18And then people would like start to go a
- 16:20little early or a little bit earlier
- 16:21because the event had ended. So then I
- 16:22remember getting an email for a random I
- 16:24don't remember which company, but it
- 16:25would it would say something like the
- 16:27embargo is 11:00 a.m. or whenever the
- 16:30feature is announced on stage, whichever
- 16:32comes first.
- 16:33>> The feature.
- 16:34>> Yeah. Or whenever the Yeah. They would
- 16:37like have a whole list of the embargos.
- 16:39>> And so then you would have to choose
- 16:42>> when to publish based on if your video
- 16:44was breaking the embargo for 11:00 a.m.
- 16:46or if the thing that is in your video
- 16:48was talked about on stage at 10:48, then
- 16:50you could publish then. Yeah,
- 16:52>> that happened for a few years. Then
- 16:54yeah, we started getting like before the
- 16:55event and
- 16:56>> yeah, I think at that point it just got
- 16:57more and more confusing because people
- 16:59started sort of intentionally breaking
- 17:01the embargo cuz it was already so
- 17:02nebulous and like confusing that people
- 17:05are like nobody's going to like call me
- 17:07out for this because I have a way to
- 17:09justify it to them, you know?
- 17:10>> Yeah.
- 17:11>> And it then it became like people were
- 17:12publishing minutes before the event
- 17:14ended because like oh my stream was
- 17:16faster or whatever. And it just I don't
- 17:18know. Personally, this 8 hour gap, this
- 17:20is like one of the first times we've
- 17:21seen something like this. I like it
- 17:24>> because
- 17:24>> I mean, as a publisher, I I'm totally
- 17:26cool with
- 17:27>> Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Exactly. Cuz like
- 17:29people just read all of our stuff, watch
- 17:30all of our stuff.
- 17:32>> And um I think the the fact that like
- 17:34Samsung, you know, puts it out, the
- 17:36embargo is the exact same time as the
- 17:37event probably hurts their numbers and
- 17:39hurts our numbers. So neither of us are
- 17:41happy. I like the fact that people are
- 17:43going to come consume our content and
- 17:45then eight hours go by, people can kind
- 17:47of digest what we had said and then
- 17:50watch the way that Google presents it.
- 17:52And I think that's interesting.
- 17:53>> It's interesting. I've always liked it
- 17:54the other way around. It felt more
- 17:56correct where first you would hear the
- 17:58marketing packaged version
- 18:00>> and then afterwards you'd hear the
- 18:01breakdown of what all that really means
- 18:03or what people believe in what that
- 18:05means.
- 18:06>> That's fair. And so if I was like a
- 18:07casual or just a consumer of that
- 18:09information, I would I would see the
- 18:11marketing thing and then I'd decide in
- 18:13the moment, do I want to look at the
- 18:14marketing thing
- 18:15>> or do I just wait until I trust these
- 18:17people and hear what they have to say? I
- 18:19think that's the way I always picture
- 18:20it.
- 18:20>> Yeah, that's a good point.
- 18:21>> Now, I mean, that's the way it still
- 18:23happens that like Apple doesn't
- 18:24pre-brief. That's kind of the way it
- 18:25still goes there. Like you first see the
- 18:27event and then later throughout the day
- 18:29you see the reactions of the people. But
- 18:30yeah, for like the Samsung thing, what
- 18:32I've noticed is we'll publish our video
- 18:34at event start. Yeah.
- 18:36>> And then you'll watch the event and
- 18:39>> 200 to 500,000 people will watch it
- 18:41live.
- 18:42>> And then when it ends, I will see
- 18:44traffic to our video go up.
- 18:46>> Like the minute the Samsung event ends
- 18:48and people start leaving and going back
- 18:49to YouTube homepage, they'll see our
- 18:50videos and then you'll see the traffic
- 18:52go up. So there's a group of people who
- 18:54are
- 18:54>> not too casual to be watching the
- 18:57Samsung event live.
- 18:58>> Yeah.
- 18:59>> But they're not too into it to be
- 19:01watching our video first.
- 19:04>> Interesting. Yeah,
- 19:05>> that I wonder if a lot of those people
- 19:06are the people who are used to the old
- 19:08embargo of like
- 19:09>> we're still yearning for the days where
- 19:11an event surprises us.
- 19:13>> And I wonder if some of those people are
- 19:14still the ones like in my day, we watch
- 19:17the event and we watch the reviews. This
- 19:19was what a release day was to me. I need
- 19:21to see the event if there's anything
- 19:23that's going to surprise me. Now all you
- 19:25get is some weird Spider-Man hanging up
- 19:27in the corner of a stage.
- 19:28>> Yeah.
- 19:29>> Or or a celebrity. But like
- 19:31>> Yeah.
- 19:32>> Yeah. I I think David's totally right on
- 19:36this actually does feel in the new age
- 19:39probably the best because it doesn't
- 19:40affect views on either person.
- 19:43The the reason it sucks for Google on
- 19:45this one and we'll get to why is you say
- 19:48like we're going to watch all the
- 19:49reviews and digest. Well, that means now
- 19:51the live stream for Google is a bunch of
- 19:53people with pitchforks and
- 19:56torches outside of the Google event
- 19:58because they're not happy with this
- 20:00release banging on it. is ready to
- 20:02destroy the chat on YouTube.
- 20:04>> I was thinking about that cuz like the
- 20:05Apple events for example, people don't
- 20:07know anything and so we as like
- 20:09reviewers and stuff, we see stuff and
- 20:12then we instantly have to touch it and
- 20:14then we have to make editorial decisions
- 20:16in the moment about what we're going to
- 20:18talk about and like how we're going to
- 20:19feel about it. But we didn't have any
- 20:21time to to look at them, digest the
- 20:24information, spend time with the
- 20:25devices.
- 20:26>> And so it's more of like a raw reaction.
- 20:29And so the the hype around the product
- 20:31is actually lower because we have more
- 20:33time to think more critically and think
- 20:35about oh is this actually better blah
- 20:37blah blah instead of just touching
- 20:39touching touching I don't know if I can
- 20:41I can't like give you an opinion on this
- 20:42yet but here it is you know
- 20:44>> yeah I I've always found companies like
- 20:47Apple are obsessed with controlling the
- 20:49narrative around their products. So if
- 20:51you think of it as like the funnel of
- 20:52like the widest group when they present
- 20:54and they show their event that is the
- 20:56largest swath of people to be getting
- 20:57the message. So they control that one
- 20:59and then afterwards there is a smaller
- 21:02group who who will hear a different
- 21:04version of the message from people like
- 21:05us.
- 21:06>> Yeah.
- 21:06>> With this it was like upside down. It
- 21:08started with all of us
- 21:11>> who had time to figure this out
- 21:13>> essentially controlling the narrative in
- 21:15a way that seems like Apple would never
- 21:16want. Yeah.
- 21:17>> And then 8 hours later the nicely
- 21:20packaged marketing narrative where
- 21:21everyone goes, "Oh, but that's just the
- 21:23marketing thing." You know,
- 21:24>> it is weird. It is weird. And it it's
- 21:26the reverse uno card of what Apple would
- 21:29do. I was going to say pineapple upside
- 21:31down cake, but it's too early for that.
- 21:33>> Well, the event was uh
- 21:34>> I was going to say, do you think part of
- 21:35it also we'll talk about the celebrity
- 21:38who was there, Trevor Noah, this year,
- 21:40but
- 21:40>> with Jimmy Fallon, was that last year or
- 21:42two years ago? Last year.
- 21:44>> Tensor.
- 21:45>> Tensor. Yeah. It became like such a meme
- 21:47because it was pretty awkward throughout
- 21:48the whole thing. But clearly Google's
- 21:50trying to bring celebrities in to try
- 21:52and get a little more average person
- 21:54watching. My thought was the people who
- 21:57are going to meme up the celebrity are
- 22:00probably the people watching our videos.
- 22:02Throw that eight hours ahead and maybe a
- 22:05lot of that audience has gotten their
- 22:07share of what's going on and doesn't
- 22:08really care about celebrity doesn't
- 22:10watch less of a chance that Twitter's
- 22:12filled with Jimmy Fallon yelling about
- 22:14random
- 22:15>> the people they're trying to reach don't
- 22:17watch our videos anyway probably.
- 22:18>> Exactly. I think the audience is so
- 22:20different now. The event doesn't have to
- 22:22be a little clouded by
- 22:24the audience that's probably going to
- 22:26dunk on it.
- 22:27>> Wait, wait. I'm sorry. Can you describe
- 22:29this like hypothetical person you're
- 22:30talking about that doesn't care enough
- 22:32about the pixel to watch a Marquez
- 22:35Brownley video, but does care enough to
- 22:37like sit down at 6:00 p.m. and watch a
- 22:40full Google event?
- 22:41>> Ellis, at this point, I felt like I'm
- 22:43taking crazy pills for so long, thinking
- 22:45that anyone other than our videos
- 22:46watches these events. But every year
- 22:48people swear to me that they do. So I'm
- 22:50just accepting that maybe that person
- 22:52does exist. But I also am
- 22:55>> Are they in the room with us right now?
- 22:56>> Yeah. I like like Google almost feels
- 22:58like they're treating it I mean it is
- 23:00Google so they could just be pushing it
- 23:02to people's homepages of YouTube. So
- 23:04like that actually for Google it might
- 23:05make
- 23:06>> they're also probably doing it for
- 23:07social.
- 23:09>> We need Yeah, we need to think about the
- 23:10clip economy.
- 23:11>> We think our video is big. It was
- 23:13interesting like the our video had
- 23:14almost a million and a half views by the
- 23:16time the event started. So we're like,
- 23:17"Oh, great." And then the event goes on
- 23:19and has like 50,000 live viewers. So I'm
- 23:21like, "Okay, this is a smaller part of
- 23:23the funnel." But then Google is going to
- 23:25put this everywhere. I'm sure we'll
- 23:27check back in. It'll have 10 million
- 23:28views cuz they paid for ads for it and
- 23:30it's everywhere.
- 23:30>> Yeah. Or was like live streaming on the
- 23:32homepage as you log on.
- 23:34>> Gemini will test it by
- 23:35>> tomorrow. Yeah. So that's their version
- 23:37of the wide version of the funnel and
- 23:39controlling the narrative blah blah
- 23:41blah. They're just going to send it to
- 23:42>> They're also going to just be clipping
- 23:43this like crazy. They're going to be
- 23:45putting it in social feeds. They're
- 23:46going to be putting on TikTok. They're
- 23:47going to be doing everything with it.
- 23:49>> I will say I think they picked the right
- 23:50person this time
- 23:51>> for sure.
- 23:51>> 100%.
- 23:52>> So, last time it was Jimmy Fallon. We've
- 23:53all talked about that episode.
- 23:56>> What else is there to be said?
- 23:58>> You know, it's a guy who hosts the show
- 24:00and is well known blah blah blah. Great.
- 24:02Trevor No has also hosted a show, but
- 24:04he's also notably like
- 24:06>> online and watches tech videos. You
- 24:09could tell he was kind of into it and
- 24:11also was much more charismatic and and
- 24:13sort of adlib libed a little bit which
- 24:15was funny and threw some googlers off
- 24:16but it was also like it was really
- 24:18funny.
- 24:19>> Really good.
- 24:20>> So so that was our our host for the the
- 24:23the event and they of course go through
- 24:24all the different uh you know Googlers
- 24:27who contributed different parts of the
- 24:28stuff that we heard about and it was it
- 24:30was pretty informative. It was also
- 24:32still marketing speak but we got to get
- 24:33some questions answered on the spot
- 24:34which is kind of cool. Uh, we got three
- 24:37phones. Four, 11, I guess. Four. Pixel
- 24:4011, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and 11 Pro Fold.
- 24:43We also have XL and 11 Pro XL. Thank
- 24:45you. They're all the same.
- 24:46>> Sorry. And then we got the Watch Five.
- 24:49We got Pixel Google Tags.
- 24:52>> Yeah,
- 24:52>> Google Tag. Not
- 24:53>> Google Tag.
- 24:54>> Google Tag.
- 24:55>> It's Google Tag.
- 24:56>> Wait, it's pixel tag. Sorry. Pixel tag.
- 24:57Pixel tag.
- 24:58>> It's pixel tag.
- 24:58>> You're right. It's pixel tag.
- 24:59>> Okay,
- 25:00>> guys. We're running on like four hours
- 25:01of Yeah, it's
- 25:03>> We can talk about all of that stuff. We
- 25:04should probably just start with the we
- 25:06should we take a a break and then come
- 25:07back and do
- 25:08>> let's just do the one so we can talk
- 25:10about it before the first ad break.
- 25:11Let's just talk about the big
- 25:13>> feature.
- 25:13>> This is the feature that to me
- 25:15exemplifies Google in 2026. This is only
- 25:18in the pros, right? This is just in the
- 25:20pros, but it's called highlight. And
- 25:22what it is is it's a multiolor or RGB,
- 25:25whatever LED on the back of the phone
- 25:28that is just well, it's two things. It's
- 25:31the flash and it's also multiolor to be
- 25:34a notification light
- 25:35>> sort of for exactly two things.
- 25:37>> Yeah.
- 25:38>> One for while you are actively speaking
- 25:42to Gemini
- 25:43>> while your phone is faced down.
- 25:45>> While your phone is facing
- 25:46>> only
- 25:47>> cuz people do that.
- 25:48>> Oh like on like on a surface. So even if
- 25:50you're holding it
- 25:52>> not while you're holding
- 25:52>> you might be facing the back
- 25:53>> only while it's facing
- 25:54>> got to be face down on the table. I just
- 25:56want to we're going to talk about
- 25:58every new thing I learn about this
- 26:01feature makes me more mad. There hasn't
- 26:03been a part of this feature that I've
- 26:05been like cool.
- 26:06>> Yeah. Okay. So, it's it's it's while
- 26:08you're talking to Gemini, it'll light up
- 26:09and it'll glow in this little multiolor
- 26:11orb. Or two, while you're receiving a
- 26:14phone call from a contact that you've
- 26:17assigned a color to specifically
- 26:19>> favorites. Yeah. So, you go into the
- 26:21contacts, you have a favorite, you
- 26:22assign them a color. There's five
- 26:24colors.
- 26:25>> That
- 26:25>> five.
- 26:26>> Just learned that this morning.
- 26:28>> Five colors.
- 26:29>> Five colors.
- 26:30>> You want Can you name the five colors
- 26:32for
- 26:32>> I think uh it's like What was funny is
- 26:34they actually said at the event there's
- 26:35no red. There is yellow, blue, purple,
- 26:39white, and like some other greenish.
- 26:43>> Five colors and white is one of them.
- 26:45>> Yeah,
- 26:46>> it's it's white when it's turned off.
- 26:48So, it must not be RGB then cuz it can't
- 26:51do red.
- 26:52>> I put RGB in here. Just assuming
- 26:56>> if it's white, it's RGB.
- 26:57>> So, how does it not have the ability to
- 26:59do
- 26:59>> It probably has the ability didn't put
- 27:01it in. Yeah.
- 27:02>> Why not? It's
- 27:03>> Why not give it Okay. Yeah. This is This
- 27:05is
- 27:07>> There's no logical.
- 27:09>> It can do white, which is all the color.
- 27:11>> They can do orange. Okay.
- 27:12>> They do all of the
- 27:14>> No.
- 27:14>> No, they just don't let it.
- 27:15>> They just don't let it.
- 27:15>> They just don't let it
- 27:17>> Why? Okay. Okay.
- 27:18>> Yeah. So, yeah, notably no text
- 27:20messages, no custom app assignments.
- 27:23Like, when you hear that this new phone
- 27:25in 2026 has a custom RGB notification
- 27:28light, it I wouldn't blame you if your
- 27:30first thought was, "Oh, great. When I
- 27:33get a spam call, it'll go red. When I
- 27:35get an email, it'll go green. When I get
- 27:38a zel, it'll go blue. When I get a
- 27:41Venmo, it'll go purple." And they have
- 27:42you have all these ideas about things
- 27:43you'll do with different apps. None of
- 27:45those things are possible as of right
- 27:46now. None of Yeah,
- 27:48>> just don't have the technology.
- 27:49>> Yeah. 20 The 2017 Note 8 it was like
- 27:53yellow Snapchat, blue Twitter, green
- 27:55messages.
- 27:56>> Oh, the minimal phone does this.
- 27:58>> No, wait. Really? Does it?
- 28:00>> Minimal phone too is notification.
- 28:01>> Oh, yeah. We were talking about that
- 28:03message.
- 28:03>> It's the thing I've wanted back most and
- 28:06partially because it's so simple. I'm
- 28:08surprised. So, when I saw this, I was
- 28:09like, yo, it's not the glowing bar, but
- 28:12like this is going to slap.
- 28:14>> This is such an opportunity for such a
- 28:15win. I remember the first like the
- 28:17Nexus, what was the Nexus one? Had a
- 28:18track ball light.
- 28:19>> Yeah,
- 28:20>> I missed those,
- 28:21>> dude. On my Nexus 6 with cyanogen mod,
- 28:23you could you could design this RGB LED
- 28:26that wasn't even officially part of the
- 28:28phone, which is something they put in
- 28:30the phone that wasn't used at all.
- 28:32>> That like in the ear. Yeah, in the
- 28:34earpiece. And you could just use it for
- 28:35whatever you wanted in any color, any
- 28:38notification. And we don't have the
- 28:40technology 15 years later.
- 28:42>> We forgot how.
- 28:42>> We forgot how to do it. But we don't
- 28:44have the machining anymore.
- 28:45>> Yeah, it's crazy.
- 28:47>> I to me this this exemplifies Google
- 28:50right now because if they were uh
- 28:53cohesive and all talking to each other
- 28:54and were thinking this through, this all
- 28:56seems very obvious to me that they would
- 28:58have done all this. They would have
- 28:59given us the ability to set it to
- 29:00certain apps and messages and lots of
- 29:03other stuff. Uh the fact that you can't.
- 29:05>> Trevor actually asked during the event
- 29:07if they would let you do other stuff
- 29:09like messages and I think they all they
- 29:11did was confirm that they working.
- 29:13>> They're working on it being for messages
- 29:15as well.
- 29:16>> Why do you have to work on it? It seems
- 29:18pretty straight.
- 29:19>> I also thought that in our vibe code
- 29:21economy, you could just tell Gemini to
- 29:22make this work and it would happen.
- 29:24>> Yeah,
- 29:24>> it is funny.
- 29:25>> But apparently not.
- 29:26>> Especially because if you're setting it
- 29:28for the contact,
- 29:29>> then you have the only thing to do is be
- 29:32that color for more or less time, one
- 29:36blink or multiple blinks. And now it is
- 29:38message versus
- 29:39>> I feel like I can see their vision,
- 29:40right? Because they're messaging around
- 29:42this pixel. This whole line of pixels
- 29:44has been let Google handle the
- 29:46complicated parts of your life. Get back
- 29:48to your normal life. Like a lot of the
- 29:50things in this event have been like stop
- 29:52staring at your phone, use Gemini for
- 29:54things and then like you know let AI do
- 29:57things for you. So I get the vision of
- 30:00like leave your phone face down on the
- 30:01table except for when you really need it
- 30:03>> except for the base phone.
- 30:04>> Except wait except for what?
- 30:06>> The base.
- 30:06>> Except for Except for the base phone.
- 30:08Unless you're poor. Um, so but but
- 30:12really it's not it's just not built out
- 30:14at all. It's just like they need to they
- 30:15need to actually deliver.
- 30:17>> It reminds me so much of the the Fitbit
- 30:21Air software UI where it's completely
- 30:25broken.
- 30:25>> It's so bad that you don't even need a
- 30:28future promise of an update because we
- 30:31all have to assume it's going to get
- 30:33fixed. Like you almost have to assume
- 30:35it's broken. that. Yeah,
- 30:37>> this is just so not fleshed out.
- 30:39>> The current and especially early Fitbit
- 30:42Air actual exercise UI when you were
- 30:44doing an exercise looked my like my
- 30:46computer science 101 like first hello
- 30:49world project where you just like put
- 30:51text on the screen on a big white box.
- 30:54That's all it was.
- 30:55>> And all of it was misaligned and there
- 30:56was like multiple different dark
- 30:59background.
- 31:00>> Yeah, it was two updates on highlight.
- 31:03>> There's updates. I'm on their website
- 31:04right now. I'm prepared to get more mad.
- 31:06>> Two really. Okay. One is it's not on the
- 31:09Pro Fold either.
- 31:10>> What?
- 31:11>> It's just on the Pro and Pro XL.
- 31:13>> Are you told us at the event?
- 31:14>> I read a different article this morning
- 31:15that said it was on Pro.
- 31:16>> Well, that's because they told me that
- 31:18at the event.
- 31:19>> Same. They told me it was on all the
- 31:20phones. I'm reading the website. It says
- 31:22on Pixel 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL. So,
- 31:25that's that's my update. Two is the
- 31:28reason it's able to do white but not red
- 31:30is because it's not really RGB. It's
- 31:34using the flash, which is still in there
- 31:36for white.
- 31:37>> Oh, it's doing a weird color wheel for
- 31:40the rest of the colors. That doesn't
- 31:41include red.
- 31:42>> Flash in the middle for white. Simon
- 31:45says blue, cyan, and orange to combine
- 31:48to make of Gemini colors include red.
- 31:51>> So, no red.
- 31:52>> But the that has to be more expensive
- 31:54than an RG than an LED, right?
- 31:56>> Yeah. Put an RGB LED in there. I hope
- 32:00someone in the comments corrects me if
- 32:01I'm wrong, but there's there's really
- 32:02only two ways to get a white LED. You
- 32:04can do an three diodes, a red, a green,
- 32:06and a blue, and fire them all at the
- 32:08same time, and then you get white cuz
- 32:10they combine. Or you can do a blue LED
- 32:12that fires at a coding that has like a
- 32:15phosphorus that emits white, like when
- 32:17the photons get activated.
- 32:20>> They're not clear about if this is a
- 32:21filter. I mean, this is I'm just going
- 32:23by the animation. I can't
- 32:24>> No, no, totally. Like
- 32:25>> there's a 50% chance that the flash
- 32:27underneath there is an RGB
- 32:29>> if they just fire the
- 32:30>> LED already.
- 32:32>> Yeah.
- 32:32>> I don't I don't quite I hope someone in
- 32:34the comments. I'm sure I'm missing
- 32:35something. But this still feels like
- 32:38they just went
- 32:39>> way around the block.
- 32:41>> There's no one clever enough at Google
- 32:43to think of a way to make this turn,
- 32:44right?
- 32:45>> Yeah, I think that they're probably
- 32:46thinking about the highlight thing as
- 32:47like an as like a screen because it
- 32:49animates for Gemini. It kind of like
- 32:51waves around and moves and it's supposed
- 32:54to be sort of like a little bit.
- 32:55>> So you're saying this is all they wanted
- 32:58to actually do was Gemini was the Gemini
- 33:00thing, but they threw us a bone and gave
- 33:02us the most halfbaked.
- 33:04>> I think they knew that if it was only
- 33:05Gemini, people would be like very angry
- 33:07about it.
- 33:07>> Well, that backfired cuz I'm more angry
- 33:09now. Um, here's a question though. When
- 33:11you get calls from anyone who is not
- 33:14part of your favorites, does the dot do
- 33:16nothing or
- 33:17>> I don't think it does anything.
- 33:18>> It doesn't do anything. You have to
- 33:19assign and it has to be to favorites.
- 33:21>> Can I assign a color to everyone else?
- 33:24>> You can go through your contacts one by
- 33:26one and give everyone a color.
- 33:28>> Wait, you can give multiple people the
- 33:29same color?
- 33:30>> It can't just be phone call yellow and
- 33:32then mom blue.
- 33:33>> No, it is
- 33:34>> like individual contact specifically.
- 33:37>> So it's not the phone app or the
- 33:39messages app. You go into contacts, you
- 33:40select that contact and you give that
- 33:42contact one of the colors and then when
- 33:44they call you and only call you, you
- 33:47will see that color.
- 33:48Yeah,
- 33:49>> Carl Pay is laughing so hard. He's like,
- 33:51"I nailed it. Let's try one shot."
- 33:54>> I I could tell that Google felt very
- 33:56mixed about this feature in general with
- 33:58like how much they wanted to promote it
- 33:59because at our hands-on event, they had
- 34:02constructed a giant pixel camera bar on
- 34:04the wall where you could hit a big red
- 34:06button,
- 34:07>> it would glow.
- 34:07>> Notably, a red button
- 34:08>> red button
- 34:09>> and u it would make the giant pix pixel
- 34:13uh highlight kind of glow and do the
- 34:15Gemini thing. So, they had a big stand
- 34:18that was like, "Look how cool this is."
- 34:20But then they didn't talk about it at
- 34:22the hands-on event at all.
- 34:24>> Yeah.
- 34:24>> And so,
- 34:25>> it was deep into the event itself.
- 34:27>> Yeah. And it was very short.
- 34:29>> Yeah.
- 34:29>> As well. So, I don't know. It seems like
- 34:32the hardware team like went kind of hard
- 34:33and then the software team was like,
- 34:35"Oh, forgot about this.
- 34:37>> We were supposed to do that."
- 34:40>> Yeah. They didn't use Google Tasks to
- 34:42actually realize that they're supposed
- 34:43to map it to anything. Anyway, we got a
- 34:46lot more features to talk about and we
- 34:47don't have very long in this hotel, so
- 34:49we should probably take a break.
- 34:50>> Let's say a quick break. Do we also have
- 34:54>> Whoa,
- 34:56we sure do.
- 35:00>> Waveform
- 35:01numero unoto.
- 35:05>> Were you paying attention?
- 35:07>> Is this to the event last night?
- 35:09>> Indeed. By the way, we watched this
- 35:11event at midnight. That's when it
- 35:13started for us. We got back at 11:47.
- 35:16>> Most of the event at 2x speed while
- 35:19cleaning my room this morning.
- 35:20>> Then you're going to crush those.
- 35:21>> I'm so sorry.
- 35:22>> My head hurts.
- 35:23>> Trevor Do was surprised by Liverpool
- 35:25legend Steven Gerard. But before he came
- 35:27out, Trevor wondered if it was actually
- 35:29him or Gemini speaking in what regional
- 35:33British accent.
- 35:34>> Um, I'm going to write I don't have my
- 35:37whiteboard, so there are regional
- 35:39British accents.
- 35:40>> Yes, this one is the Liverpool. Really?
- 35:42The UK is so small, man. No, it's so
- 35:45It's so complicated. The UK is so
- 35:47complicated.
- 35:47>> What I'm essentially asking is what is
- 35:48the Liverpool accent called?
- 35:50>> Yeah, I got it. I was just going to say
- 35:51>> this is one of those things where I know
- 35:53one name of an accent and
- 35:56>> is it
- 35:57>> the opportunity of how many people are
- 35:59going to get mad when it's wrong? Is
- 36:00>> probably
- 36:02>> I'd rather probably just not get the
- 36:03pose.
- 36:04>> I'm kidding.
- 36:06>> Well, we we'll think about it. Yeah.
- 36:08>> Uh, we will probably have to guess some
- 36:10accents. Answers at the end like usual.
- 36:12>> We'll be right back.

- 37:25welcome back. Uh quick update. We
- 37:27continued reading uh more Google
- 37:30websites about highlight and it does
- 37:31seem like they have also said that the
- 37:3411 Pro Fold has Highlight. So, I'm
- 37:36throwing it back on the table. Base
- 37:38phone doesn't have it. Not enough room.
- 37:41I don't know. Pro Fold does have it. Pro
- 37:44and Pro XL also have it.
- 37:45>> Yes.
- 37:46>> Yeah.
- 37:46>> I guess we'll find out in the full
- 37:48review.
- 37:48>> Yeah, I guess we will. Uh anyway, let's
- 37:50talk about these phones. There's a bunch
- 37:52of new phones.
- 37:53There's a bunch of story lines going
- 37:55around about these phones. I think the
- 37:57the main story line is one of the silly
- 37:59ones, which is, "Oh, this isn't a big
- 38:01upgrade from the Pixel 10." Yeah, true.
- 38:04Um, phones are incremental nowadays. I
- 38:06agree. But the Pixel 11 has tensor 6. It
- 38:09has a brighter display. It has slightly
- 38:12faster wireless charging. And it's 100
- 38:14bucks more because memory is expensive.
- 38:17And that's is a thinner camera bar.
- 38:19>> A new thinner camera bar and a new
- 38:21primary camera sensor.
- 38:23>> Does it charge quicker?
- 38:24>> Yeah.
- 38:25>> Yeah. Charges wired and wireless
- 38:26quicker. It's funny. There was a there's
- 38:28one feature I saw that I didn't even get
- 38:30briefed about, but somebody like tweeted
- 38:32a screenshot. Maybe I missed it during
- 38:33the event about like an extreme charging
- 38:35mode.
- 38:35>> I was trying to read about that. I do.
- 38:38You know what it is? cuz it seems like
- 38:39>> it seems like it's a software thing that
- 38:42can just prioritize charging over or or
- 38:44like pause tasks that are going on on
- 38:46the phone to prioritize charging.
- 38:48>> It was just funny to me because it's
- 38:49probably like 30 watts, which is like
- 38:51not extreme at all, but
- 38:53>> they're calling it their extreme
- 38:54charging mode, which is their fastest
- 38:56possible charging,
- 38:57>> which is, you know, it's better than not
- 38:59having a faster charging. Well, it said
- 39:00it can charge the Pro XL to like 75% in
- 39:0330 minutes. And the Pro and the regular
- 39:0611 to uh 55% in 30 minutes if you use a
- 39:09extreme charging mode.
- 39:10>> I'm coming from the OnePlus 15 where I
- 39:12would look at the charger and it would
- 39:13go to 100% seconds. So
- 39:15>> yeah.
- 39:16>> Yeah, it's I you know welcome small
- 39:18incremental increases. You know, Tensor
- 39:206 we don't know that much about, but
- 39:22we'll we'll benchmark it. We'll see if
- 39:23it's dramatically better at anything.
- 39:25I'm sure it'll be slightly faster with
- 39:26CPU, better with AI performance, more
- 39:29memory bandwidth, the classic stuff we
- 39:30look to for Google Tensor, not
- 39:33necessarily amazing GPU or performance
- 39:35otherwise.
- 39:36>> Um, yeah, I have I have a hot take about
- 39:37Tensor. Can I Can I talk about hot take,
- 39:40please?
- 39:40>> Okay.
- 39:41>> I think that people think about like
- 39:44SOC's and CPUs differently than Google
- 39:47thinks about SOC's and CPUs. I agree.
- 39:49>> And I think that people always look at
- 39:51Tensor and they compare it to like a
- 39:53Snapdragon chip. And you can't compare
- 39:55the chips very much. I I know
- 39:58>> how can I
- 39:59>> I mean you can in certain ways.
- 40:00>> That's what I'd say if I was losing.
- 40:03>> You can in certain ways because like
- 40:04obviously the gaming performance, the
- 40:06FPS, whatever. That's all whatever. But
- 40:08Google's been hyper optimizing for TPUs
- 40:12for like a while, like ever since Tensor
- 40:141. That's that's part of the reason they
- 40:15made Tensor in the first place was
- 40:17because they were like, "Oh, we need to
- 40:18do AI performance. AI performance."
- 40:20Notably in Tensor 6, it's 2x the memory
- 40:23bandwidth for Gemini. So they're just
- 40:25like hyperfixated on this world where
- 40:28your phone is like automating things for
- 40:30you, automating tasks, doing things, you
- 40:32know, natural language processing, that
- 40:34kind of stuff. Rambler, local model,
- 40:37yeah, Gemini Nano, that kind of stuff.
- 40:39And I know that Qualcomm also optimizes
- 40:43for this stuff, but it's not the 100%
- 40:46flag post thing that Google is thinking
- 40:48about for. So when you when we look at
- 40:50Tensor 6, it's like 2x the memory
- 40:52bandwidth for LLMs and stuff like that,
- 40:54you know, like 2x the TPUs. Big deal for
- 40:58them. Um there's a new ISP in there that
- 41:00allows them to do new image signal
- 41:02processing stuff that enables the things
- 41:04like the 30x zoom and the regular Pixel
- 41:0711 and the 120x zoom and 11 Pros.
- 41:10>> So I don't know. I think Google just
- 41:13thinks about when we make these things
- 41:14new every year, how can it enable more
- 41:16AI stuff? whereas every other company is
- 41:19just like faster.
- 41:21>> That's a more efficient.
- 41:23>> I wonder if that approach is yielding
- 41:26better AI performance in a noticeable
- 41:29way. The same way that Qualcomm's
- 41:32approach is yielding faster graphics
- 41:36than Tensor. Noticeable is a great way
- 41:39to put it because I think that Google is
- 41:42sort of optimizing for the future and
- 41:44thinking about we don't want to hit a
- 41:45cap. We don't want your phone that is
- 41:47having seven years of updates to one day
- 41:51not be able to meet the AI standards
- 41:53that were shipping in software.
- 41:55>> Yeah. And Qualcomm's like, I don't want
- 41:56you to ever drop a frame.
- 41:58>> Yeah. Mobile.
- 41:59>> Yeah.
- 42:00>> Like Genchin Impact at 400 FPS.
- 42:03>> My counter to that would be that
- 42:04Qualcomm is doing what people want
- 42:06though right now.
- 42:09>> AI features. I'm not saying that the
- 42:11Google approach is correct, but I think
- 42:13that the the what Google wants out of
- 42:15its devices for the future, that's what
- 42:17they're optimizing for.
- 42:17>> I also think I think you're right in the
- 42:20sense that people who watch our stuff
- 42:21want I think 95%
- 42:25of people buying a phone couldn't tell
- 42:27the difference between any of these
- 42:30processors and it will just run exactly
- 42:33how they think.
- 42:33>> 95% of people buying the Pixel phone are
- 42:36not even going to use most of the AI
- 42:37features. A couple years ago, I think
- 42:39you could tell the difference between a
- 42:40Tensor chip and a Snapdragon chip in
- 42:42performance. Not Not I bet most people.
- 42:45You're right. It's not. It's most of us.
- 42:46It's us eyeballing it. But the fact that
- 42:48I could eyeball it means there's some
- 42:49amount of people tell.
- 42:51>> Um and then you'd play a game and you'd
- 42:53be like, "Oh, it's heating up a lot
- 42:55more." It's actually a way worse
- 42:56performance. So that's it was
- 42:58interesting. Now I just wonder how
- 42:59noticeable. Like are we going to hit a
- 43:00cap with Qualcomm chips where they're
- 43:02like, "Oh my god."
- 43:03>> Yeah.
- 43:03>> Look how far AI came. We're focusing on
- 43:05frame rates. Like we'll see.
- 43:07>> Yeah. But I did get an email last night
- 43:09from um Mediate Tech's PR agency
- 43:13>> that said, "By the way, MediaTek cannot
- 43:16confirm this, but here's a bunch of
- 43:17articles that infer that MediaTek is now
- 43:21the modem in Tensor." Um that's
- 43:24>> which was really weird. It was like
- 43:26MediaTek is saying that they can't say,
- 43:28but that they are.
- 43:30>> Well, I would like to say that again,
- 43:31and I can't announce this, but I
- 43:33personally handcrafted every moto. I'm
- 43:35inferring this, of course. So there's
- 43:38the efficiency thing is interesting
- 43:39because you know people always chat on
- 43:42tensor be for having terrible like modem
- 43:46efficiency performance because the
- 43:47Samsung modem in tensor was terrible and
- 43:50so now we have a media techch one so it
- 43:52allegedly alleged
- 43:53>> potentially media techch is telling me
- 43:55that they can't tell me that they are
- 43:57the ones making it.
- 43:58>> It's a guy with a media hello I'm
- 44:00mediate techch handing you an anonymous
- 44:02letter.
- 44:02>> Yeah literally
- 44:04>> wink wink.
- 44:04>> Super weird. Um,
- 44:06>> it's like when there's a rumor about
- 44:07you, but it's a good rumor. So, telling
- 44:08all your friends.
- 44:09>> Anyway, they they do say that the Tensor
- 44:12G6 chip is quite a bit more efficient
- 44:14and maybe that's why. But, uh, yeah,
- 44:17maybe people won't be as upset anymore.
- 44:19I don't know. I do think certain regions
- 44:21of the world, like China, where everyone
- 44:23plays a lot more mobile games,
- 44:25>> it'll probably matter more. Um, but they
- 44:27should be buying the phones that can
- 44:28charge at 400 watts. So,
- 44:30>> yeah, there will be phones for them.
- 44:32This is not phones for them. Yeah. Um,
- 44:34yeah, maybe that's why the batteries
- 44:35didn't get bigger on any of these
- 44:36phones.
- 44:36>> Yeah, they got actually smaller on the
- 44:37Pros by a little bit.
- 44:38>> Yeah, bigger cameras, smaller batteries.
- 44:40But anyway, on the base Pixel, new
- 44:42colors are honestly the most noticeable
- 44:44thing about them to most people. Uh, the
- 44:46fuchsia color is so unbelievably
- 44:48saturated. All of my footage of it, it
- 44:50looks like I'm peeking the like red
- 44:51channels. It's so bright.
- 44:52>> It reminds me of Rabbit R1 where you're
- 44:54like
- 44:55>> impossible to color. There's something
- 44:57wrong with this.
- 44:58>> Yeah. And it it looks like that in real
- 44:59life. It's really
- 45:00>> I think it's fuchsia as hell. It's
- 45:02great. Um, so we'll test the cameras.
- 45:04We'll see if they're actually better. At
- 45:06least the primary camera is different.
- 45:07>> I didn't get to see it, but I think the
- 45:09thinner camera bar looks sweet.
- 45:11>> It is a thinner camera bar. Agreed.
- 45:13>> Yeah,
- 45:14>> I have a hot take.
- 45:14>> Yeah, we were fighting about
- 45:15>> We were fighting about this.
- 45:16>> So now Google offers three levels of
- 45:18camera bars and depending on how much
- 45:20money you're willing to spend, you get a
- 45:21thicker camera bar, which is
- 45:23interesting.
- 45:24>> That's so backwards,
- 45:25>> but Apple kind of did this with the the
- 45:28iPhone.
- 45:28>> Yeah, triple camera is the big boy.
- 45:30Yeah, the bigger the the bump. The
- 45:32bigger the bump, the more
- 45:33>> I think that's how most people explain
- 45:36difference between the pros and nonpro
- 45:38>> pretty much.
- 45:39>> Oh, this is the one with three cameras.
- 45:40>> Yeah.
- 45:41>> Yeah,
- 45:41>> I get that. I just feel like if I'm
- 45:43paying more money, it should feel like
- 45:45the more premium device, which is the
- 45:47smaller camera.
- 45:48>> I kind of disagree with that because the
- 45:50Pixel the Pixel 9a is flush and to me
- 45:53that feels like the cheapest phone.
- 45:55>> Well, that's because the phone itself is
- 45:56super cheap. If you put that on a metal
- 45:58glass beautiful hardware,
- 46:00>> I don't really think so because then
- 46:01it's just then it's just a rectangle.
- 46:03>> Yeah. I think I think people associate
- 46:05the bigger camera bump with the more
- 46:06capable camera.
- 46:07>> Here's the other thing. The
- 46:09>> Yeah,
- 46:09>> the Pros have the shiny
- 46:12>> rails and there's that rail around the
- 46:14camera bump as well. So, you get that
- 46:16premium shiny around the camera bump
- 46:19>> and it looks more premium.
- 46:21>> No, no, I get visually why that is the
- 46:23case and it being more cameras and
- 46:25everything. I just I feel like if I'm
- 46:27picking something up and I'm holding it
- 46:29>> like the iPhone Air, when you pick up an
- 46:32iPhone Air, it's so thin. It's like,
- 46:34wow. Like this is a premium device, you
- 46:36know?
- 46:36>> Yeah. It also has titanium and it's like
- 46:39super super
- 46:40>> It's more like the thinness.
- 46:41>> That also has a big camera bar, by the
- 46:42way.
- 46:43>> Well, yeah, but it's an everything bar.
- 46:44The whole phone the whole It has a phone
- 46:47bar.
- 46:48>> The whole phone is is in the camera.
- 46:50It's more so like the the bump is not
- 46:53like it I never got over it. Like I know
- 46:55we've had it for so long, but I'm still
- 46:57like this is annoying that
- 46:58>> you're going to have to get over it.
- 46:59There's something there. I I see both
- 47:02sides of this where I could understand
- 47:04smaller camera bar means more
- 47:06engineering to shrink this thing,
- 47:08therefore better. But then I also see
- 47:10like bigger camera bar means
- 47:12>> better came better camera. So yeah, I
- 47:14see
- 47:15>> I associate just purely flush phones
- 47:17that are just rectangles with being
- 47:19cheap phones. I don't know with the
- 47:20worst cameras,
- 47:21>> but it's not a rectangle. It's like a
- 47:23squirle thing. Like it's rather
- 47:26>> I will say I like this thought of uh
- 47:30>> they're physically building the price
- 47:32ladder of flush step up Pixel step up
- 47:36Pixel 11 Pro.
- 47:38>> Then I so badly want XL to be a little
- 47:40bigger and then Fold to just be like a
- 47:42quarter inch off the back of the
- 47:44>> Oh yeah, that'd be incredible.
- 47:45>> New inch just drop. Yeah, I mean it
- 47:48there is a reason that they associate it
- 47:49with a better camera is because if you
- 47:51have a bigger sensor, you have to have
- 47:52more zdepth. So, they have to make it
- 47:54bigger. But, uh, yeah, it is it is
- 47:56funny. It is funny.
- 47:58>> 40% thinner, though. Uh, on the regular
- 48:0111 when you bar when you like hold it,
- 48:03feel it. It's interesting. It's kind of
- 48:04It's that in between. Yeah. The camera
- 48:07bar.
- 48:08>> The camera bar.
- 48:09>> Just the camera bar. So, the protrusion
- 48:10itself, that's a protrusion number.
- 48:12>> The premium protrusion.
- 48:13>> Yeah, the premium protrusion. You're
- 48:15paying for less Zdepth.
- 48:17>> The base did the thing I asked them last
- 48:20year. I was like, "Google, you messed
- 48:22up. All you have to do 256 base." And
- 48:24praise Google, they did it for $100
- 48:26extra dollars. They didn't do it at all.
- 48:28>> They didn't really do it.
- 48:28>> Worst barrier of entry.
- 48:31>> Yeah.
- 48:32>> Come on. So, to be clear, last year the
- 48:3510 started at 128 gigs, which felt a
- 48:38little bit late to do that, and it was
- 48:40$799. This year the phone starts at 256
- 48:44gigs. So we started to clap and then
- 48:45they said, "By the way, it also starts
- 48:47now at the price of last year's 256,
- 48:50$900."
- 48:51>> Yeah.
- 48:51>> And then we stopped clapping. So yeah,
- 48:53memory is expensive. Uh this is probably
- 48:56going to be a trend. This is not the
- 48:57only phone that's going to happen to.
- 48:58But that was uh one of the headlines
- 49:01about this phone.
- 49:01>> Yeah, I'm very sorry.
- 49:03>> No, it's fine. It's this is happening to
- 49:05every phone in the market. Like we've
- 49:06seen this across the board. And that is
- 49:08what I wanted to say is the reason last
- 49:10year 128 base at $799 felt so bad is
- 49:15because the iPhone base was 2569.
- 49:18And when Apple is the better deal than
- 49:20you, rough.
- 49:22>> So
- 49:24>> Google almost needs the base, new iPhone
- 49:26to be a $100 increase and same base. is
- 49:31mostly
- 49:32>> what's so crazy to me and like I know
- 49:33that they have to make their margins and
- 49:35whatever but a lot of these companies
- 49:37especially Google and Apple some of the
- 49:39richest companies in the world if they
- 49:41really want to be competitive like
- 49:42especially Google if they want to grow
- 49:44market share it's a pretty big win for
- 49:46them and I know that they might have to
- 49:48sell these at a slight loss or maybe
- 49:50they're not even selling them at a loss
- 49:51but they're just making a little less
- 49:52money and I know that's not great but if
- 49:55they can sell way more phones because
- 49:56the PR of the phone being like oh it's
- 49:58still it's super affordable
- 50:00It might be better for them in the long
- 50:02run.
- 50:02>> I think everyone watching this
- 50:03intuitively agrees. But when you said
- 50:06make a little less money, all the
- 50:07shareholders went, "Huh, what?" And then
- 50:09it didn't,
- 50:10>> but maybe they'll make more money
- 50:11because more people will buy the phones.
- 50:13>> Yeah. Short-term gains would be nice
- 50:17>> in like the things we care about, but
- 50:20they got to make the number go up every
- 50:22>> Nexus 7. like the Nexus 7 tablet, they
- 50:25literally lost $50 on every single
- 50:27tablet they sold so that they could get
- 50:29Google accounts.
- 50:30>> Even a couple years ago, the like base
- 50:32pixels were great deals. They were like
- 50:35incredible deals compared when the Pro
- 50:37started being like $200 or $300 more,
- 50:39>> 300 bucks more. And I'm interested if
- 50:41now in you know the market's going to uh
- 50:44have to catch up but we did start seeing
- 50:47a I mean a pixel market share increase
- 50:49is like a couple percent but that's like
- 50:51doubling percentage wise in US. So like
- 50:54we did see it go up a little bit and now
- 50:56I wonder if being the same price as
- 50:58everything else. We're going to now in
- 51:00two to three years see it start to not
- 51:02be as good.
- 51:03>> We'll see. We'll see what the rest of
- 51:04the year happens to do with phones. But
- 51:06yeah, I never thought I would see a $900
- 51:08starting Pixel. That's That's a lot.
- 51:10>> That is pretty high.
- 51:11>> That's a lot.
- 51:12>> So, we got the pros as well.
- 51:13>> Yes.
- 51:14>> Slightly less muted or less exciting
- 51:16colors. I will mention we mentioned the
- 51:18the the rails of the phone are glossy
- 51:20>> except
- 51:22for the new matte black one.
- 51:23>> So, they are listening.
- 51:25>> Somebody somewhere at Google did a
- 51:27little extra work.
- 51:28>> Definitely
- 51:30black phone has matte black rails.
- 51:32>> 100%.
- 51:34>> We've complained about this every year.
- 51:35We've complained about this for years.
- 51:37Yeah,
- 51:37>> they were so hoping the title of the
- 51:39hands-on impression was going to be like
- 51:41>> matte black everything.
- 51:44>> Yeah. So, um, so the Pro XL, the Pro and
- 51:47the Pro XL came out. Same size as 6.3
- 51:506.8. Again, brighter displays. I think
- 51:52we display on any phone.
- 51:54>> Yeah. 3600 nits is the highest we've
- 51:56seen for peak brightness.
- 51:58>> Legitimately extremely bright in person
- 52:00and on camera. I was turning them up and
- 52:02actually I was mostly turning them down
- 52:04in my footage because they were really
- 52:05bright. Well, and what's crazy is like
- 52:06you're not even hitting peak brightness
- 52:08when you turn the brightness all the way
- 52:09up. It only does peak brightness when
- 52:11the sun is shining on it and it knows it
- 52:13needs to be brighter.
- 52:14>> What if there's an eclipse?
- 52:15>> Then it'll get darker.
- 52:17>> Yeah. Indoors it was probably not
- 52:18hitting 36.
- 52:19>> No, probably 24 or something.
- 52:21>> But yeah, awesomely bright displays,
- 52:22which is great. Same resolutions. I
- 52:24think we have a new primary camera and a
- 52:26new telephoto, I believe.
- 52:29>> Yeah. Yeah. The So, the primary camera
- 52:30in the Pros is the same size as last
- 52:33year. They told me that the main reason
- 52:35they swapped it out is because it uses
- 52:36less power than the one last year.
- 52:39>> And if it uses less power, they can fit
- 52:40more. They said now we can fit more AI
- 52:42features in it. Well, sort of. Yeah. The
- 52:45the the camera had I talked to him about
- 52:47the camera stuff and he said some of my
- 52:49favorite pixel computational photography
- 52:51features ever you can fit in 100 m,
- 52:54which is the amount of power that they
- 52:55saved on the primary camera.
- 52:57>> I see. I see. I see.
- 52:58>> So, I think that's the way that they
- 52:59think about these things. Yeah. But the
- 53:01telephoto camera is uh bigger and gets
- 53:0430% more light intake.
- 53:06>> That's nice.
- 53:07>> So that's nice.
- 53:08>> Good. So we'll be testing the zoom on
- 53:09these news uh on these new cameras. Uh
- 53:12tensor G6 as well.
- 53:14>> Less RAM
- 53:15>> on the base. On the base Pixel 11 Pro
- 53:20last year was 16 gigs of RAM. This year
- 53:21it's down to 12. Yeah.
- 53:22>> But if you upgrade from 256 to 512 or a
- 53:25terabyte of storage, you're back up to
- 53:2616 gigs of RAM again.
- 53:27>> Yeah. So that's notably less RAM on the
- 53:29base Pro, which by the way is more
- 53:32expensive. 100 bucks more expensive
- 53:33again. So they start at $1,100 and the
- 53:36Pro XL starts at $1,300.
- 53:40Crazy.
- 53:41>> What's the jump from 256 to 512
- 53:44>> in price? It's 200 bucks.
- 53:46>> It's 200 bucks. Yeah, I was going to say
- 53:48that'd be
- 53:49>> that'd be really like if it was only a h
- 53:51100red bucks uh you would get the four
- 53:54extra gigs of RAM and the double the
- 53:56storage, but
- 53:58>> it's it's wild that might be
- 54:00>> Hold on.
- 54:01>> Look at But like dropping This is the
- 54:04most RAM again thing I've ever seen,
- 54:05which is increase price by $100, give
- 54:08less RAM than last year.
- 54:10>> While you guys look this up, I just want
- 54:11to put a little bit of context on
- 54:13something David said earlier. Um, Google
- 54:15does not report what percentage of their
- 54:17revenue actually comes from Pixel
- 54:19specifically,
- 54:20>> but they do report a category of their
- 54:22revenue called subscriptions, platforms,
- 54:25and devices.
- 54:26>> Yeah. They loop it all in.
- 54:28>> Yeah. And uh the numbers I'm seeing for
- 54:30the past few quarters seem to hover
- 54:32between 9 and 15% of all revenue,
- 54:35>> but subscriptions is a big bucket.
- 54:39>> I I I I don't know what platforms means.
- 54:43platforms and devices. It's like Android
- 54:46Chrome.
- 54:46>> It's like
- 54:47>> Okay. So, I guess pixel is somewhere
- 54:50between zero and 9% of Google.
- 54:53>> This is what companies do when it's
- 54:54either something they want to hide or
- 54:56it's too small to matter or both.
- 54:58>> So, it sounds like they can shave a
- 55:00little bit of a price off the
- 55:01>> like sometimes we'll want to know how
- 55:03much money did Apple make off of uh this
- 55:06random small thing like their how much
- 55:08how many keyboards did they sell? And
- 55:09you can never find this information
- 55:11because it's always just going to be
- 55:11looped in with Max or whatever.
- 55:13>> It's the bestselling keyboard of all
- 55:14time. Arcus,
- 55:14>> they they'll they'll say that on stage
- 55:16and they'll put a little asterisk and
- 55:17the fine print is like, "Trust us, we
- 55:19know." Yeah. Like, "All right, well, I
- 55:21guess we'll just have to believe that."
- 55:23>> Um, yeah. So, that's, you know, that's
- 55:25the story with the pros. I'm still going
- 55:27to be trying it out, still testing it,
- 55:29still doing the thing where I believe
- 55:31this is going to be the phone that I
- 55:32use, but there's so much software stuff.
- 55:34>> You don't look happy about it.
- 55:35>> It's a map Pixel app. We we do have to
- 55:38talk about all the software stuff
- 55:39though.
- 55:40>> Yeah, there's plenty of software. But
- 55:41real quick, the new Fold, just to get
- 55:43that out, the new specs. So, there's a
- 55:45couple interesting new things with the
- 55:46Fold. Uh it is a tiny bit thinner. I
- 55:49think it's 1 millm thinner.
- 55:50>> Did you see why?
- 55:51>> Uh because of the new hinge
- 55:53>> because one side is thinner than the
- 55:55other side.
- 55:56>> Oh, that's also true.
- 55:58>> I saw that on video.
- 55:59>> Front.
- 56:00>> It says almost a millimeter thinner. And
- 56:02they they said nearly
- 56:03>> Yeah, a millimeter.
- 56:05>> Nearly 1 millimeter safe. big deal.
- 56:07>> Um, it still will have, I think, the
- 56:10sameish size battery, but uh some new
- 56:12camera. Uh, and then the back material
- 56:16is now this like glass fiber composite,
- 56:19which they made a strangely big deal
- 56:20about to me. They were telling me, "Oh,
- 56:22yeah, it's unbreakable. You can't break
- 56:23it. It's impossible. You This is never
- 56:25going to shatter." I was like, "What are
- 56:26you Why are you telling this is a very
- 56:27confident way of telling me this is
- 56:29material?"
- 56:30>> Zach would like the word.
- 56:31>> Yeah, we're going to find out. Um, so
- 56:34we'll see. I like that it's still IP68.
- 56:36Like they have gone hard with the
- 56:38durability factor. Like Samsung's are
- 56:41still IP 40 something. I think IP 48.
- 56:44You can get them wet, but you can't
- 56:45they're not IP68.
- 56:47>> Okay.
- 56:47>> So So full IP68 still and harder to
- 56:50crack and victus on the front. It's a
- 56:52it's a supposedly very durable full.
- 56:54>> Yeah. I'm so sorry. Is is glass fiber
- 56:57composite different than just like
- 56:59fiberglass?
- 57:00>> Uh I guess they're not going to tell us.
- 57:03>> Glass fiber. I mean, if you ask cuz this
- 57:05is I don't know if it's Gorilla Glass or
- 57:07not. This is like Gorilla Glass is
- 57:09already composite. So,
- 57:11>> that's just Gorilla Glass.
- 57:12>> The back material is some other.
- 57:13>> I put a milk cream composite in my
- 57:15coffee every morning. You don't hear me
- 57:17brag.
- 57:17>> All composite means is it's mixed with
- 57:19something.
- 57:19>> Well, what did it You guys have to feel
- 57:21it. Did it feel like glass or did it
- 57:23feel glass?
- 57:24>> I wonder if that's it. Fiberglass
- 57:25doesn't feel like glass. I wonder if it
- 57:26was
- 57:28>> attempting to replicate
- 57:29>> ceramic in there. Who knows? They said
- 57:31the durability was like 3x that of
- 57:33>> the front screen.
- 57:34>> The front screen. No, the front screen
- 57:36is 2x scratch resistant.
- 57:38>> But I also saw someone say the front
- 57:39display was claimed to be 3x more
- 57:41durable. And the back they just said
- 57:42nearly impossible to crack. Something
- 57:44about it would have to like fold around
- 57:46the phone in order for it to actually
- 57:49break.
- 57:49>> That's Yeah, I'm impressed by that
- 57:52claim.
- 57:53>> I need to feel the phone again and
- 57:55figure out.
- 57:56>> You have to be super confident to make
- 57:57that claim or just
- 57:59>> lying. Yeah,
- 58:00>> they also made the ultra thin glass
- 58:02thicker, which is really funny. Um, they
- 58:04told me in the briefing they made the
- 58:07ultra thin glass thicker to make it more
- 58:09durable.
- 58:10>> You know what's funny?
- 58:11>> This is I think we would you all agree
- 58:14this is the most durable fold.
- 58:15>> I don't know. I mean, that's what that's
- 58:17what they that's what they say.
- 58:19>> It's alleged.
- 58:21>> Because the only fold that's ever
- 58:22exploded in Zach's hands during a Jerry
- 58:25everything test is the Pixel Pro Fold. I
- 58:27don't think it has I think everyone can
- 58:30understand what Zach did
- 58:32>> was was like not something that's going
- 58:35to happen and extreme like it had
- 58:36nothing to do because it was a pixel.
- 58:38>> The video did blow up and sometimes that
- 58:40the way they market the next year's
- 58:41phone
- 58:42>> and so maybe they changed the back
- 58:44material so that the glass wouldn't like
- 58:46shatter. Was it last year? Maybe it was
- 58:47two years ago.
- 58:48>> Yeah. I'm going to need to wait for the
- 58:49Zach video to know if this is the most
- 58:51durable fold ever.
- 58:52>> Yeah, I'll do it for you too in New
- 58:55Jersey. I don't think Google's as
- 58:56worried about Zach's incident as like
- 58:59Samsung's worried about like Note 7
- 59:01explosions. That was clearly Samsung's
- 59:03fault where Zach's was like
- 59:05>> such a specific thing that happened that
- 59:07will never happen to a phone.
- 59:09>> Yeah, it was a lot of chance. This was
- 59:10last year's 10 profile.
- 59:11>> It was last year's
- 59:12>> some Samsung executive is sitting there
- 59:13just like, "God, they're still talking
- 59:14about it.
- 59:16>> Yeah, forever."
- 59:18>> But yeah, in general, uh
- 59:19>> $18.99 for that one.
- 59:21>> Expensive obviously still. Uh, but all
- 59:25your same stuff. 16 gigs of RAM, Tensor
- 59:26G6, slightly larger interior display,
- 59:28slightly thinner bezels, slightly
- 59:30brighter screens, all the Pixel stuff.
- 59:32Yeah,
- 59:33>> it's all still here. So, looking forward
- 59:35to testing two new Made You look
- 59:36animations.
- 59:38>> Yay.
- 59:38>> Oh, really?
- 59:39>> Yeah. Nice. If you don't remember, Maj
- 59:41Look is uh on the on the screen when you
- 59:45have the phone open, the front screen
- 59:46will have like little animation guys
- 59:48that are like, so if you have kids,
- 59:51they'll like stare at it and smile. I
- 59:53did watch it work for I saw it in real
- 59:56life. I went to the aquarium with my
- 59:58friend and his daughter and um we sat
- 1:00:01her and Lane on this like little turtle
- 1:00:03statue and getting both to look at the
- 1:00:05same time and he just walks up and goes
- 1:00:08and then he told me that he hates the
- 1:00:10camera so much most of the time he does
- 1:00:12it. He uses that while his wife takes
- 1:00:14the picture with her iPhone.
- 1:00:18>> God was about to clip this out of the
- 1:00:20podcast like Yes. Yeah. Oh no.
- 1:00:24>> It did work. It did work very well.
- 1:00:26>> But Trevor said that the Pixel is the
- 1:00:28best lowlight photography in the
- 1:00:29industry.
- 1:00:30>> That's rough.
- 1:00:31>> Yeah. I'm sure those animations will
- 1:00:33never come to older Pixel folds.
- 1:00:35>> Yeah.
- 1:00:36>> Um
- 1:00:36>> they forgot how you need the RAM.
- 1:00:39>> Yeah, you need the tensor for sure.
- 1:00:41>> Yeah.
- 1:00:41>> Um All right. Yeah.
- 1:00:42>> Well, I want to talk about all the the
- 1:00:45camera stuff and the software, but I
- 1:00:47think we need to take one more break. We
- 1:00:48also got to take talk talk about the
- 1:00:49Pixel Watch and the Pixel Tag, which is
- 1:00:52the AirDrop competitor. I can do that
- 1:00:53pretty quick. You want to take about the
- 1:00:54Pixel Tag now? Should we do it real
- 1:00:56quick? Let's do it. Okay. You guys have
- 1:00:57heard of uh Air Tags, right? You know
- 1:00:59the like the What's the little What are
- 1:01:01they based on?
- 1:01:02>> Air Tags.
- 1:01:03>> Air Tags.
- 1:01:04>> Oh, find my circles.
- 1:01:05>> No, but they're based on tiles. Yeah.
- 1:01:06So, you've heard of Tiles? You've heard
- 1:01:07of Air Tags? Well, now Google makes one.
- 1:01:09Same price, same concept,
- 1:01:11>> same thing.
- 1:01:12>> It's a little longer though.
- 1:01:13>> You can find it with Gemini.
- 1:01:15>> Yeah. It looks like it has a Google G on
- 1:01:17it. Yeah,
- 1:01:18>> it's very small.
- 1:01:20>> Yeah, it's wider. Gemini mean it just
- 1:01:22>> meaning you can be like, "Hey, Gemini,
- 1:01:23find my luggage tag." And then if you
- 1:01:25named it luggage tag, it'll be like,
- 1:01:26"It's in Nova Scotia. Somebody stole
- 1:01:28it."
- 1:01:29>> Oh, that's going to be something cuz
- 1:01:30people use these for like kids at
- 1:01:32amusement parks. So, it's going to be so
- 1:01:33funny. Like, Gemini, where's Lane?
- 1:01:37>> You know, you know the smudge tool in
- 1:01:38Photoshop where you can, it's like the
- 1:01:40finger thing and you smoosh the thing to
- 1:01:42the It's like if you took an Air Tag and
- 1:01:44used that tool on it, you smooshed it in
- 1:01:46a direction. Does it? cuz it's
- 1:01:47elongated. Like there's an area where
- 1:01:49the battery can go in on the back and
- 1:01:51that's this a circle and that's
- 1:01:52basically the size and shape of an Air
- 1:01:54Tag and then for some reason they just
- 1:01:56elongated it by like almost twice the
- 1:01:59length.
- 1:01:59>> It's thinner than thinner than an Air
- 1:02:01Tag but it is longer.
- 1:02:02>> Kind of looks like the Fitbit Air
- 1:02:03thingy.
- 1:02:04>> Yeah. It's a little It's a little a
- 1:02:06little wider than a Fitbit Air. Yeah.
- 1:02:08And
- 1:02:08>> 30 bucks.
- 1:02:09>> Hopefully they work.
- 1:02:11>> Replaceable battery. Yes.
- 1:02:12>> Yeah. It's the same as an Air Tag
- 1:02:14basically. You can replace this.
- 1:02:15>> I'm probably going to just off the back.
- 1:02:16>> You just
- 1:02:18>> What? What do you
- 1:02:19>> How What do you put in there?
- 1:02:20>> You It's a coin battery.
- 1:02:21>> Watch batteries.
- 1:02:22>> I don't own any Air Tags.
- 1:02:23>> Literally like Air Tag is like a coin
- 1:02:24battery with a little casing on it.
- 1:02:26That's literally all it is.
- 1:02:27>> Swag.
- 1:02:28>> It's pretty awesome.
- 1:02:28>> Fourpack for 100 bucks.
- 1:02:30>> I'm weirdly the most excited about Pixel
- 1:02:32Tag out of everything here.
- 1:02:33>> Yeah. Well, the Moto Tag has already
- 1:02:35existed. The Moto Tag is good, too.
- 1:02:37>> Yeah.
- 1:02:38>> So, then there's
- 1:02:39>> Does it have highlight?
- 1:02:42>> No. Uh then there's the watch, the watch
- 1:02:445. The watch 5 did get some interesting
- 1:02:47substantial improvements. Uh much more
- 1:02:49accurate GPS. They actually name dropped
- 1:02:51the Apple Watch Ultra and Garmin Phoenix
- 1:02:53on stage. It says more accurate GPS than
- 1:02:55both of those
- 1:02:56>> which was kind of crazy that they did
- 1:02:57that. Usually you don't name drop like
- 1:02:59that.
- 1:02:59>> We'll find out.
- 1:03:00>> They name dropped models. So they said
- 1:03:02better uh it is more expensive but it is
- 1:03:04uh more accurate. It has more more
- 1:03:07tracking generally more data collection
- 1:03:08but obviously for more accuracy for all
- 1:03:10the health tracking stuff. They said 15%
- 1:03:12better sleep tracking which or more
- 1:03:15accurate sleep tracking which is a
- 1:03:17really really hard metric to actually
- 1:03:18contextualize
- 1:03:20>> and that also makes me think damn how
- 1:03:22bad was the sleep tracking before and
- 1:03:24>> I guess like what part of sleep tracking
- 1:03:26like falling asleep waking up rem
- 1:03:28>> I think that's probably what it is the
- 1:03:30falling asleep and waking up parts but I
- 1:03:32whenever I read that I just kind of read
- 1:03:33uh they're sampling 15% more frequently
- 1:03:37>> that's kind of what I assume is
- 1:03:38happening I don't know how else you make
- 1:03:39the claim of 15% more accurate I mean,
- 1:03:41it might just be like our algorithms to
- 1:03:44create this score
- 1:03:47>> are 15%
- 1:03:48>> better in some way. I I don't know
- 1:03:51actually saying it's mostly saying
- 1:03:52nothing.
- 1:03:52>> Yeah, I mean design-wise it looks the
- 1:03:54same. It has a slightly higher clocked
- 1:03:57Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip inside, better
- 1:04:01memory bandwidth, more ondevice Gemini
- 1:04:03capabilities, which I know that you
- 1:04:05wanted in your watch. Um, insulin
- 1:04:07resistance detection is their big new
- 1:04:10headline feature this year.
- 1:04:11>> Insulin resistance trends.
- 1:04:13>> Yeah.
- 1:04:14>> Specifically. And what was the other
- 1:04:15trend? There was another trend.
- 1:04:16>> There's a blood pressure.
- 1:04:17>> Blood pressure. Uh, oxygen levels.
- 1:04:20>> Well, so there's a
- 1:04:21>> like breathing emergencies.
- 1:04:22>> Breathing emergencies was one of the
- 1:04:23other things for like choking toxic
- 1:04:25inhalations or drug toxicity accidents.
- 1:04:27If they drop, if your oxygen drops, it
- 1:04:29can call emergency services.
- 1:04:30>> Yeah. Yeah. By the way, a friend of
- 1:04:33mine's dad got in a bike crash recently
- 1:04:35and he got knocked out in the bike
- 1:04:37crash. He had a pixel watch on and it
- 1:04:38did call 911.
- 1:04:40>> Oh.
- 1:04:40>> And it actually did help him.
- 1:04:42>> Crash detection.
- 1:04:43>> Yeah, crash detection.
- 1:04:44>> Yeah.
- 1:04:44>> So, this stuff does work.
- 1:04:46>> Yeah.
- 1:04:46>> You know, that's why they use it in the
- 1:04:48ad every single year for the Apple
- 1:04:49Watch.
- 1:04:50>> They're about to ask you what is
- 1:04:51>> when the bear comes in your house. You
- 1:04:52know, the bear is in your house and your
- 1:04:54watch can tell 911. Um, yeah, it was uh
- 1:04:583 gigs of RAM from 2 gigs, double
- 1:05:00storage to 64.
- 1:05:01>> Oh, so they can put more RAM in the
- 1:05:02watch, huh?
- 1:05:05>> Gemini.
- 1:05:06>> Um, I also
- 1:05:06>> How much is it? Did we say
- 1:05:08>> $3.99?
- 1:05:10>> Oh my god.
- 1:05:11>> Well, to give them credit, and I hope
- 1:05:14I'm right about this, just leave it if
- 1:05:16I'm wrong and someone will tell me. I
- 1:05:17think this is the first increase on
- 1:05:18Pixel Watch since the start of price
- 1:05:21increase.
- 1:05:21>> Oh, price increase. I think so. Yeah.
- 1:05:24>> Fine. Five generations in and you raise
- 1:05:26it 50 bucks I think.
- 1:05:28>> Yeah.
- 1:05:28>> Okay.
- 1:05:29>> I don't think that's as bad in compared
- 1:05:31to all the other things.
- 1:05:33>> Yeah, I agree.
- 1:05:34>> They're fine.
- 1:05:34>> Yeah. 399 is in line. It feels
- 1:05:36>> Does it have highlight?
- 1:05:37>> It does not have highlight. It does also
- 1:05:38have blood pressure trend.
- 1:05:40>> No, it just it just tells you who's
- 1:05:42calling you. It has more than highlight
- 1:05:45screen.
- 1:05:46>> Um but yeah, that's that's essentially
- 1:05:48it. Yeah, the better fitness tool. Uh,
- 1:05:50we also got uh a new color of PixelBud
- 1:05:53and they're pushing an update to it. Uh,
- 1:05:55PixelBud Pro 2, which are really old
- 1:05:57now. And I don't know why they haven't
- 1:05:58released it gen 3. I guess because they
- 1:06:00just think that it's fine and they can
- 1:06:01make new software updates, which is what
- 1:06:03they're doing. They're pushing a big
- 1:06:04software update. Supposed to have better
- 1:06:06anti has sleep detection now so that
- 1:06:08when you fall asleep and music's
- 1:06:09listening, it'll like pause and stuff
- 1:06:11like that.
- 1:06:12>> Um, has something had something to do
- 1:06:14with like matching up with your watch to
- 1:06:16do something as well. But
- 1:06:17>> I thought the watch is what detects if
- 1:06:19you're asleep.
- 1:06:20>> Maybe that was it.
- 1:06:21>> I think that was it. I don't think
- 1:06:23>> the buds had something.
- 1:06:25>> Were you paying attention?
- 1:06:26>> Uh, it was 1:00 a.m. So, I don't know.
- 1:06:30But yeah, I don't know. You don't need
- 1:06:31to buy new uh Pixel Buds, but they did
- 1:06:34have the new uh olive color. So, it's
- 1:06:37the same color as the Pixel Pro green.
- 1:06:40So,
- 1:06:40>> are any of us fall asleep with earbuds
- 1:06:42in people? Sometimes
- 1:06:44>> really I stay in
- 1:06:46>> I live in the cellar notably on the
- 1:06:49busiest street in my neighborhood and
- 1:06:50sometimes there's construction that
- 1:06:52happens in the middle of the night and
- 1:06:53it's really loud. Uh I also have my AC
- 1:06:56running right above my face and that can
- 1:06:59get annoying sometimes. So sometimes I
- 1:07:01do wear noise cancelling earbuds to fall
- 1:07:04asleep. I also use them on the plane to
- 1:07:05fall asleep.
- 1:07:06>> Same.
- 1:07:06>> Yeah, the plane is the big one for me.
- 1:07:08>> They do not stay in
- 1:07:09>> really
- 1:07:09>> and then I lose them and then I find
- 1:07:11them.
- 1:07:11>> Are you a side sleeper? I I sleep every
- 1:07:14direction.
- 1:07:15>> I am.
- 1:07:15>> Sometimes they go backwards.
- 1:07:16>> I can't imagine rotisser. I would lose
- 1:07:18those so fast.
- 1:07:19>> No, I'm a side sleeper. I sleep in them.
- 1:07:21Not like every night, but if I'm
- 1:07:22somewhere loud, I'll use them as
- 1:07:23earplugs and they stay in all night.
- 1:07:25>> Wow. You're you're lucky.
- 1:07:26>> I'm a big like white noise while
- 1:07:27sleeping person. I slept so I I lived in
- 1:07:30Hoboken for 5 years and my apartment
- 1:07:32there had right outside there was a bus
- 1:07:34stop, there was a hospital, so always
- 1:07:36got ambulances, blah blah. So, I always
- 1:07:38just put a fan right in the window and
- 1:07:40just turn it all the way up. So, I would
- 1:07:41always fall asleep to that noise.
- 1:07:43>> Now, in a hotel like this, it's too
- 1:07:45quiet.
- 1:07:46>> I like play white noise machine or
- 1:07:48something.
- 1:07:49>> Oh, wow.
- 1:07:49>> I just
- 1:07:52No one cares, but I hate white noises
- 1:07:53cuz we have to play it for when Lane was
- 1:07:55a baby sleeping in our room and now
- 1:07:56Owen. And I can't wait till the white
- 1:07:58noise machine.
- 1:07:58>> You're more of a pink noise guy.
- 1:08:00>> I'm more dead silence.
- 1:08:01>> Brown.
- 1:08:02>> Brown noise.
- 1:08:03>> Dead silence is crazy.
- 1:08:04>> I love dead silence.
- 1:08:06>> Better than live silence. You can't.
- 1:08:07Actually, you know what's funny? This is
- 1:08:08so off topic.
- 1:08:10>> Okay, I had I had um This is so stupid.
- 1:08:13My I had a Spotify. I just looked up
- 1:08:15like rain sounds. There's like a 50
- 1:08:17track like rain sounds thing that I was
- 1:08:19playing.
- 1:08:20>> Yeah.
- 1:08:20>> So, like last night, we're super
- 1:08:22jet-lagged. I started the rain sounds
- 1:08:23thing
- 1:08:24>> and then I went to sleep
- 1:08:26>> and then I woke up and the rain sounds
- 1:08:29had stopped playing and I was like,
- 1:08:31"That's weird. This stopped playing."
- 1:08:33So, I went over to turn it on and right
- 1:08:35before I turned it on, the shower just
- 1:08:38started like making noise of like
- 1:08:42>> random water coming out of it.
- 1:08:44>> And I was like,
- 1:08:45>> my shot of that, too.
- 1:08:46>> The hell's going I was about to play
- 1:08:48water after
- 1:08:50>> water. I was freaked out for like 5
- 1:08:52minutes. I was like, what? Who is in
- 1:08:54this room right now? Who turned off my
- 1:08:55water and made water?
- 1:08:56>> So, none of you guys watch YouTube ever
- 1:08:59to fall asleep? I've never
- 1:09:00>> I do.
- 1:09:01>> Uh I always turn I use the sleep timer.
- 1:09:03>> Okay. The autoplay algorithm when you're
- 1:09:06sleeping
- 1:09:08different.
- 1:09:09>> Yeah, dude. They will show you things
- 1:09:11that you did not even know.
- 1:09:13>> Um there's a really good reply all
- 1:09:15episode where spoiler alert this person
- 1:09:18was playing like white noise, but it
- 1:09:20happened to be this one like white noise
- 1:09:23thing they got had like footsteps and
- 1:09:26then like a person like mumbling. So,
- 1:09:28the the person was living in the like
- 1:09:29basement of a house and thought someone
- 1:09:30had broken in in the middle of the night
- 1:09:33and like freaked out. Yeah.
- 1:09:34>> Yeah. That would freak me out.
- 1:09:35>> One more slight tangent. Uh,
- 1:09:38>> while we're here,
- 1:09:38>> my friend is a musician and makes decent
- 1:09:41money in his band with his band as his
- 1:09:43full-time job.
- 1:09:44>> Dude, shut up about Street Life
- 1:09:45Manifesto.
- 1:09:46>> That's not They do not make decent
- 1:09:49money.
- 1:09:49>> I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Dave.
- 1:09:50>> He probably makes more money than they
- 1:09:51do. Anyway, um, and he recently, a few
- 1:09:55months ago, started making like ambient
- 1:09:58sleep music to go to sleep to, and he's
- 1:10:00put out like five ambient sleep albums.
- 1:10:03>> It's probably a good hack.
- 1:10:04>> He said he makes like 30 to 50,000 a
- 1:10:07month.
- 1:10:08>> It's like with ambient sleep music, but
- 1:10:10he's like, I know for a fact that
- 1:10:12Spotify in the next like year is just
- 1:10:14going to start AI generating all this
- 1:10:16music because why would they give that
- 1:10:18money away to other people when they
- 1:10:19could have it for themselves? And it is
- 1:10:21the it is the easiest like money hack
- 1:10:23ever.
- 1:10:24>> Um anyway, yeah. Gez,
- 1:10:26>> his ambient sleep music is good. I
- 1:10:27actually use it. So
- 1:10:29>> Oh, wow.
- 1:10:29>> He doesn't need a plug. He's making
- 1:10:31>> plenty of money on it.
- 1:10:32>> Well, I'm not plug I'm not plugging. I
- 1:10:34didn't even
- 1:10:34>> listen to waveform when you're sleeping.
- 1:10:35>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10:36>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10:37>> Do that. Do that.
- 1:10:38>> Yeah. Which Okay. One more. I had a
- 1:10:41friend tell me that the the YouTube
- 1:10:43algorithm, he falls asleep to YouTube
- 1:10:45every night and every single night he
- 1:10:47wakes up and it's playing our Halloween
- 1:10:49episode from last year.
- 1:10:50>> Really?
- 1:10:51>> And it's always the Halloween episode
- 1:10:53and he always wakes up and finishes it.
- 1:10:57He said it's every night.
- 1:10:59>> He can probably recite it as
- 1:11:01>> crazy. I know. I know.
- 1:11:03>> That's amazing.
- 1:11:03>> Anyway, the one where I'm a minion.
- 1:11:07>> It was the It was the It was the year
- 1:11:08before this last year. about the
- 1:11:10hamburger when I was a large language
- 1:11:12model.
- 1:11:13>> You were I might have been dressed.
- 1:11:15>> Oh, no, no, no. I don't think you were
- 1:11:17there and we made you a zombie in the
- 1:11:19thumbnail and people called it clickbait
- 1:11:20cuz it was a joke that you were sick, I
- 1:11:22think, and people were really mad you
- 1:11:25weren't in the episode.
- 1:11:26>> Damn, that's really funny.
- 1:11:27>> All right, well, we really have to take
- 1:11:29a break and then we got to talk about
- 1:11:30some new software stuff cuz I really
- 1:11:32want to ramble about um about camera
- 1:11:35stuff,
- 1:11:35>> which means it's time for Tensor, I mean
- 1:11:37trivia.
- 1:11:40There we go.
- 1:11:40>> Notable delay.
- 1:11:41>> Tensor trivia.
- 1:11:43>> Trivia, dude. So, we spoke about
- 1:11:46highlight earlier. Marquez, stop looking
- 1:11:47at my tablet. We spoke about the
- 1:11:49highlight feature, which is the new
- 1:11:50Google way of letting you see that you
- 1:11:52got notifications on your on your Pixel
- 1:11:55phone.
- 1:11:55>> Uh, notification. No, notification.
- 1:11:57Notification.
- 1:11:57>> Yeah, you're right. Notification.
- 1:11:59>> Notification.
- 1:12:00>> Uh, but HTC already solved this years
- 1:12:02ago with a case that protected the
- 1:12:04screen.
- 1:12:05>> Oh, yeah. Oh,
- 1:12:06>> do you remember what this feature was
- 1:12:08called?
- 1:12:08>> What it was called?
- 1:12:10>> What was it called?
- 1:12:10>> I made a whole video about this place.
- 1:12:12>> Yes, you did.
- 1:12:12>> Oh, no. And I was in Barcelona when I
- 1:12:14made that video.
- 1:12:15>> Really? Which is also in Spain.
- 1:12:18>> Wow. We are now very
- 1:12:20remember the name.
- 1:12:21>> I have an idea.
- 1:12:22>> I could describe it in such detail.
- 1:12:25>> Yeah, but I don't details include that
- 1:12:27name.
- 1:12:27>> It was not.
- 1:12:28>> That's a great word. I'm glad you said
- 1:12:29that.
- 1:12:30>> In the name for sure.
- 1:12:32>> That's for sure in the name.
- 1:12:33>> Oh, okay. I was mad I gave you him, but
- 1:12:35I didn't know. So, I may have
- 1:12:36inadvertently a
- 1:12:38>> It's like a port.
- 1:12:39>> Was that like a Halloween candy joke?
- 1:12:41Cuz Marquez likes
- 1:12:42>> Marquez does love.
- 1:12:43>> I love dots.
- 1:12:44>> Well, David's friend knows.
- 1:12:45>> This will make much more sense when we
- 1:12:47hear the answer.
- 1:12:48>> Yeah.
- 1:12:48>> Okay.
- 1:12:49>> All right.
- 1:12:50>> We'll either learn something new or
- 1:12:52remember something incredible at the
- 1:12:53end. We'll be right back.
- 1:12:54>> Like the HTC incredible two. Wow. Call
- 1:12:58back.
- 1:12:58>> Thanks,

- 1:13:32game. You name it. Marquez loves space
- 1:13:35so much that we're literally recording
- 1:13:36this episode in Spain. But you listener,
- 1:13:39did you know that the NASA API is
- 1:13:40actually free for you to hit? So, I
- 1:13:42actually made an app to pull the NASA
- 1:13:45gallery of all their images and just
- 1:13:47show me a random image every day. It's
- 1:13:49super cool and it took me like 10
- 1:13:51minutes. And to cap it all off, Glaze
- 1:13:53apps are real software that live on your

- 1:14:55couch that I'm sitting on. Um, but it's
- 1:14:58the Spain heat is no joke. And this has
- 1:15:01been helping quite a bit. It's been like
- 1:15:03100 every day we've been out here and
- 1:15:04we've been cooking. And the only thing
- 1:15:06saving me are these breathable shirts

- 1:15:30Okay, welcome back. We do have, believe
- 1:15:32it or not, some software to talk about
- 1:15:33from the Google event. One last segment
- 1:15:36here.
- 1:15:36>> Uh, do we have any favorites? We want to
- 1:15:39any like highlights from the
- 1:15:40>> Don't do it, Marquez.
- 1:15:42>> Sorry, that's a pun. I meant to say any
- 1:15:45things that we think are worth talking
- 1:15:47about software.
- 1:15:49>> Yes. Go on. So, I have a few camera
- 1:15:51things I want to talk about. Go on.
- 1:15:52>> Okay. Google added a thing called camera
- 1:15:55looks. Oh, I saw this.
- 1:15:57>> Yes. So, camera looks is kind of like
- 1:16:00the Fujifilm film simulations in a in a
- 1:16:03lot of ways. I did an interview with
- 1:16:05Isaac Reynolds, uh, Google Pixel camera
- 1:16:08chief. Uh, last time I interviewed him
- 1:16:10was for the Pixel 4. So, it's been a
- 1:16:13while.
- 1:16:13>> That was their prime.
- 1:16:15>> It was their prime. It was Well, except
- 1:16:17for the whole Soleie thing. We don't
- 1:16:18talk about that. Um,
- 1:16:20>> yeah. But but at the time when I
- 1:16:23interviewed him in in 2019, it was wild
- 1:16:25because his the their whole mentality at
- 1:16:27Google was if you are tapping anything
- 1:16:30on the screen except for the shutter
- 1:16:31button, it is error. That's what he told
- 1:16:34me in 2019. All input is error. The Elon
- 1:16:36approach.
- 1:16:38>> All inputs error. this year, notably
- 1:16:40extremely different. Um, there are so
- 1:16:43many settings now in the Pixel camera.
- 1:16:44You have pro modes, you have like manual
- 1:16:46settings, you got everything, but
- 1:16:48there's this new mode now called camera
- 1:16:50looks. Camera looks. Uh, there are four
- 1:16:53defaults for sort of like the original
- 1:16:55camera look and then you have vanilla
- 1:16:57which makes it a little more kind of
- 1:16:59like warmer. And then there's uh
- 1:17:02classic. I don't know. There's a few
- 1:17:03primary and then there's a bunch of
- 1:17:05basically film simulations. So you've
- 1:17:07got the Digi Cam simulation. Oh, it has
- 1:17:09these built in, too.
- 1:17:10>> Yeah, it's also built in called Digi.
- 1:17:12Um, there's a minimal one which
- 1:17:14basically removes. So, okay, the coolest
- 1:17:17thing about all of this is that the way
- 1:17:19that they are doing this is that they
- 1:17:21are doing less computational photography
- 1:17:24dynamically, but in the most Google way
- 1:17:27possible depending on the settings that
- 1:17:29you change with the contrast and the
- 1:17:31options that you pick because you
- 1:17:33basically pick one of these film modes
- 1:17:35like the DigiCam mode, whatever. And
- 1:17:37then you can change settings like
- 1:17:39contrast, you can change settings like
- 1:17:40sharpness, like all of these things.
- 1:17:42Depending on the settings you change,
- 1:17:44the processing will dynamically do less
- 1:17:48HDR or less sharpness, things like that.
- 1:17:51So when you do, you know, when you're
- 1:17:53taking an HDR photo, it's compositing a
- 1:17:56bunch of sampled frames on top of each
- 1:17:58other to give you better noise
- 1:17:59reduction, things like that. And the
- 1:18:01Google camera team is very, very sure
- 1:18:03that this is the best possible way to
- 1:18:05make a photo. I disagree. And apparently
- 1:18:08a lot of people have disagreed because
- 1:18:10now they have this camera looks thing.
- 1:18:12And now when you take a photo with one
- 1:18:14of these modes, it's using less samples
- 1:18:16to actually have less sharpness, make it
- 1:18:18a little bit softer, make it have a
- 1:18:20little bit less uh less detail in the
- 1:18:24shadows, things like that.
- 1:18:26>> Imperfectionism.
- 1:18:26>> Imperfections. They are using machine
- 1:18:29learning to dynamically give you less
- 1:18:32perfect photos, which is the most
- 1:18:34>> modes, right?
- 1:18:35>> But only in these modes. Not like by the
- 1:18:36default camera.
- 1:18:37>> No, the default camera is the same.
- 1:18:38>> You can set it as a default though.
- 1:18:40>> You you can set four modes as the
- 1:18:42default. Annoyingly, this is very
- 1:18:43annoying. You can't set like the Digi
- 1:18:46simulation as a default. You can only
- 1:18:47set the only defaults you can set are
- 1:18:49like the vanilla, the like minimal.
- 1:18:51There's four options. Okay.
- 1:18:53>> And then there's a bunch of film
- 1:18:54options,
- 1:18:55>> but it's the most Google thing in the
- 1:18:57world to use machine learning to
- 1:19:00dynamically decide how much
- 1:19:02computational photography they should be
- 1:19:04doing at all. Mhm.
- 1:19:05>> Um, so that's very funny and I think
- 1:19:07it's really cool uh because what's been
- 1:19:09people it's what people have been asking
- 1:19:11for for a long time. It's clearly a
- 1:19:12direct reaction to people using a lot of
- 1:19:15third party camera apps that give you
- 1:19:16these features. Um, so that's pretty
- 1:19:19great. I think it's nice.
- 1:19:20>> That's good. I will definitely be
- 1:19:21messing with these. Um, it almost opens
- 1:19:25a can of worms into a much bigger
- 1:19:27conversation which is I'm not going to
- 1:19:29do it. So don't take the bait.
- 1:19:31>> Don't do it. I'm digging it. Are we at
- 1:19:33peak smartphone if like
- 1:19:36most of what we're trying to do with new
- 1:19:37smartphone cameras is give them some
- 1:19:39imperfections back?
- 1:19:41>> Yes.
- 1:19:41>> But don't take the bait. Don't Well,
- 1:19:42that's another episode. Okay,
- 1:19:44>> we'll do that.
- 1:19:44>> That is a that is a great separate
- 1:19:46episode, but
- 1:19:46>> an hour later,
- 1:19:47>> I do think it's amazing that we're
- 1:19:49making cameras worse because they are
- 1:19:51too perfect. And Isaac Reynolds was
- 1:19:53like, "No, we like we've we've solved
- 1:19:55the camera."
- 1:19:56>> Um, which sure if you want it to look
- 1:19:58like ass, but you know.
- 1:20:01>> Anyway, so end of the camera spectrum.
- 1:20:03>> Yeah.
- 1:20:03>> Uh cuz I noticed there's a lot more when
- 1:20:04I was doing my hands on there's a lot
- 1:20:05more buttons in the camera mode. Another
- 1:20:07one when you slide over to the left is
- 1:20:09just this magic capture feature.
- 1:20:11>> Yes.
- 1:20:11>> Which is and they showed it at the event
- 1:20:13as well.
- 1:20:14>> All you do is again this is about living
- 1:20:17in the moment. So don't even bother
- 1:20:19snapping photos and videos. Whatever's
- 1:20:21happening in front of you just open up
- 1:20:22Magic Capture and start it and point it
- 1:20:24at the scene. And then whatever happens
- 1:20:27happens. And at the end, Google's Magic
- 1:20:30Capture will have decided on some photo
- 1:20:33frames and some videos to capture for
- 1:20:35you that are the best, the highlights
- 1:20:37from that scene.
- 1:20:38>> Yeah.
- 1:20:39>> And they give some examples which are
- 1:20:40interesting. I think uh a nice example
- 1:20:43would be like, I don't know, a solar
- 1:20:45eclipse is happening in front of you or
- 1:20:46something and instead of like pointing
- 1:20:49your phone at it in front of your face,
- 1:20:51you should just like enjoy the thing in
- 1:20:53front of you. And so just start a magic
- 1:20:56capture and whatever it decides is
- 1:20:57happening, okay, it'll capture it. But
- 1:20:59the example they used was much more
- 1:21:01action-packed. It was like people
- 1:21:02playing basketball in front of you, uh
- 1:21:04different poses, different, you know,
- 1:21:06people looking at the camera versus not
- 1:21:07looking. It will smartly take tons and
- 1:21:09tons of frames, sift it down, pick the
- 1:21:10best ones, and give it to you.
- 1:21:12>> Yeah. Magic. Yeah.
- 1:21:13>> You sold you sold me on that feature
- 1:21:15when at first I was like, "This is the
- 1:21:17dumbest thing I've ever heard."
- 1:21:18>> Yeah. Know that you kind of
- 1:21:19>> It's funny because in the keynote the
- 1:21:20the example they had a they said it was
- 1:21:22a live demo. Their example was that he
- 1:21:24was at a basketball game and he's like,
- 1:21:25"You want to live in the moment?" So, he
- 1:21:27has his phone just recording while he's
- 1:21:29watching the game.
- 1:21:31>> I've tried doing this before and it's
- 1:21:34really hard. If you're not looking at
- 1:21:35the screen, your hand kind of
- 1:21:37>> Your hand kind of just drifts
- 1:21:39>> and it's really difficult.
- 1:21:42>> Yeah. Hard.
- 1:21:43>> You're not in the moment. Things still
- 1:21:45need to be in frame. I don't
- 1:21:46>> You need to keep looking at your phone.
- 1:21:48It's difficult. Yeah.
- 1:21:49>> It's notably very difficult.
- 1:21:51>> Yeah. So, we're going to have to really
- 1:21:52try that out. What I found very
- 1:21:54interesting is that it's one of the
- 1:21:56three modes now because previously you
- 1:21:58had you had uh photo mode and video
- 1:22:00mode. Now, there's photo video and magic
- 1:22:02capture.
- 1:22:03>> Yeah, it's like
- 1:22:03>> that's the first thing I notic right
- 1:22:04there.
- 1:22:04>> I was like, "Wow, a new button must be a
- 1:22:06big deal." And it's just magic capture.
- 1:22:08>> Yeah.
- 1:22:08>> Which I think is interesting. But um
- 1:22:11>> I could see it being useful for like uh
- 1:22:14the group photo that you have to put the
- 1:22:15camera down and go on the timer and then
- 1:22:17every time you go back and someone
- 1:22:18blinks you just like throw magic capture
- 1:22:20on everyone get in and grab a frame
- 1:22:22>> or or you have a tripod
- 1:22:24>> and you you frame the video first and
- 1:22:26then you hit magic capture and then you
- 1:22:27go do the thing. I don't know. You want
- 1:22:29to be in front of your daughter as she's
- 1:22:31blowing the candles out of her cake. You
- 1:22:33don't you don't want to be like the
- 1:22:34vision pro guy who's like doing this
- 1:22:36like filming her, you know, which is
- 1:22:39incredible. Um, that's in the moment
- 1:22:41technically, I guess, just through a
- 1:22:43screen.
- 1:22:43>> Yeah.
- 1:22:43>> Um, so there are some uses for it. It's
- 1:22:46going to be interesting to see if it
- 1:22:47actually works.
- 1:22:48>> You took it out of my mouth, though,
- 1:22:49because I was going to say, isn't this
- 1:22:50video?
- 1:22:51>> It's video, but So, it's Google Clips.
- 1:22:54>> Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:22:55>> If if you guys don't know what this was,
- 1:22:57many years ago, Google sold a small
- 1:23:00clip-on camera. You could either just
- 1:23:02like put it in the corner and mount it
- 1:23:03somewhere. But the whole point was it
- 1:23:05would it was a little clip on camera
- 1:23:06that you clip to things and it would
- 1:23:08just record for like two hours or
- 1:23:11whatever and it would just find random
- 1:23:13frames throughout the day when it
- 1:23:15noticed you were smiling or whatever and
- 1:23:17it would send you like these updates of
- 1:23:19like, oh, look at all these photos of
- 1:23:20you and your family having a happy time.
- 1:23:22Now, I don't think we would ever put a
- 1:23:24camera made by Google in our in our
- 1:23:27houses that we're constantly recording.
- 1:23:29Uh, but this is effectively what Magic
- 1:23:31Capture does, which is funny. Um, at
- 1:23:33least you are manually turning it on
- 1:23:35instead of just letting it do its thing
- 1:23:36whenever you whenever it wants.
- 1:23:38>> I think it sounds useful and fun. I just
- 1:23:42don't believe the live in the moment
- 1:23:44because then you're just going to get a
- 1:23:46bunch of videos of people's feet on the
- 1:23:47ground.
- 1:23:48>> Yeah, unless you have a tripod or
- 1:23:49something.
- 1:23:49>> Yeah. Or that's what you're going for.
- 1:23:51>> That's, you know, hey babe. Um,
- 1:23:54>> your own imagine. I have a really really
- 1:23:57crazy what is a photo/ what is a video
- 1:24:00thing.
- 1:24:00>> Oh no, David.
- 1:24:02>> We can't do an hour on this.
- 1:24:03>> You don't have to.
- 1:24:04>> This is a small can of worms or a medium
- 1:24:05can of worms.
- 1:24:06>> We can make it small for now, but you I
- 1:24:08want you to chew on it and later we'll
- 1:24:10talk about it again. All right. Okay. So
- 1:24:13they haven't So if you remember um
- 1:24:15there's now there is a mode where you
- 1:24:17can upload your footage to the cloud and
- 1:24:20it will do a bunch of things like
- 1:24:21upscaling it to 8K and
- 1:24:23>> boost
- 1:24:24>> video boost and it makes the low low
- 1:24:26light video. It will like brighten the
- 1:24:28shadows and do all this stuff because it
- 1:24:30has to run on Google's tensor cores in
- 1:24:32their server centers whatever. Um, still
- 1:24:35a really weird thing that you would do
- 1:24:36that and it's like I guess you're just
- 1:24:37doing it with the the videos you want to
- 1:24:39and it takes up a lot of storage, etc.
- 1:24:42>> There's a new thing in it inside of
- 1:24:44video boost called uh prostable video.
- 1:24:47>> Mhm.
- 1:24:47>> And this is basically optimizing the
- 1:24:51stabilization of your video. So if
- 1:24:53you're walking, you know, you're
- 1:24:54running, whatever, it'll it'll stabilize
- 1:24:56it. If it thinks it needs stabilization,
- 1:24:59what it is actually doing, this is so
- 1:25:01crazy, is that every frame in the video,
- 1:25:05it is using as information for a gouge
- 1:25:08and splatting 3D model.
- 1:25:10>> Oh my god.
- 1:25:10>> So, it builds a 3D model of the scene.
- 1:25:14>> Okay. And it uses every frame to then
- 1:25:17gouge and splat the scene, which is a
- 1:25:19relatively new technology where you
- 1:25:22basically create 3D stuff out of 2D
- 1:25:24images uh based on micro camera shake
- 1:25:27and things like that because you're
- 1:25:28seeing around the pixels, etc.
- 1:25:30>> And um what it does after it creates the
- 1:25:323D model of your scene, it then creates
- 1:25:35a virtual camera track inside of the
- 1:25:38scene that flies the camera through.
- 1:25:41>> Uhhuh.
- 1:25:42>> And um Are you kidding me? I'm not
- 1:25:44kidding you. And then they told me that
- 1:25:46they actually had to add some camera
- 1:25:48shake back because it just looked like a
- 1:25:50literal drone shot and people felt
- 1:25:52uncomfortable with it.
- 1:25:54>> So they have they had to add artificial
- 1:25:56camera shake a little bit back to make
- 1:25:59it seem like it wasn't. So now my like
- 1:26:02what's crazy is like because it's using
- 1:26:04your frames as reference material for
- 1:26:06the 3D model for the whatever
- 1:26:09you're still technically getting the
- 1:26:11same video back but there is a 3D model
- 1:26:13of your scene that a virtual camera is
- 1:26:16flying through and what you're getting
- 1:26:17back is
- 1:26:18>> kind of a 3D render of reality
- 1:26:21>> heavy mix of reality and and interpreted
- 1:26:24things.
- 1:26:25>> Yeah. Huh. Can Can we just appreciate
- 1:26:28that Google can take a video, 3D map
- 1:26:32every single frame?
- 1:26:33>> Yeah.
- 1:26:33>> Create a fake camera, track you,
- 1:26:36>> Yeah.
- 1:26:37>> add shake back to make it look good.
- 1:26:38>> Yeah.
- 1:26:39>> And the RGB light on the back five
- 1:26:43colors and can only do calls.
- 1:26:45>> Yeah.
- 1:26:45>> And one of them is white.
- 1:26:46>> What planet do we live on?
- 1:26:48>> I know.
- 1:26:49>> No, this this is just the most like
- 1:26:52>> what even is a video anymore? Like
- 1:26:55you're giving me a 3D basic. It's almost
- 1:26:57like I'm getting a 3D animation back of
- 1:26:59the reality that I captured.
- 1:27:00>> Yeah, that is very Google. Okay, I will
- 1:27:03chew on that. I'm going to try that as
- 1:27:04well.
- 1:27:05>> I'm going to pretend that never
- 1:27:06happened.
- 1:27:06>> It's crazy.
- 1:27:08>> I can't wait to see it.
- 1:27:10>> Samsung the Apple one's already really
- 1:27:11good.
- 1:27:11>> Yeah, they said they only do the
- 1:27:13Prostable video when it thinks it needs
- 1:27:15it. So, you can't force it, which is
- 1:27:17annoying.
- 1:27:18>> Okay.
- 1:27:18>> So, I think you should like go on a run
- 1:27:20with your phone or something.
- 1:27:21>> I'm going to sprint down the street.
- 1:27:22Yeah, I'm going to try it. Yeah, we got
- 1:27:24to like force it.
- 1:27:25>> Samsung stabilization though is
- 1:27:27>> pretty good
- 1:27:27>> different.
- 1:27:28>> Yeah, it doesn't do this.
- 1:27:29>> You can flip your camera.
- 1:27:30>> Yeah, it has EIS and OIS combined and
- 1:27:32it'll do as best as it can with the
- 1:27:34information and it'll like crop in so it
- 1:27:36has way more room to do the
- 1:27:37stabilization. But you'll see that it's
- 1:27:39>> this is the most Google thing in the
- 1:27:40world. It's like use software to just
- 1:27:43completely eliminate the need for
- 1:27:44hardware.
- 1:27:45>> Whoever thought of that was like how
- 1:27:46many tensor chips we got?
- 1:27:48>> I have an idea.
- 1:27:49>> Gian splatting is a new uh rapidly
- 1:27:51evolving technology. What if we just
- 1:27:54>> really took advantage of it?
- 1:27:55>> Wow.
- 1:27:56>> So crazy.
- 1:27:57>> I think that's just crazy. I just wanted
- 1:27:58to talk about that.
- 1:27:59>> Yeah,
- 1:27:59>> that's the main stuff. So
- 1:28:01>> the feature, the rest of the features on
- 1:28:02the phones themselves is Android 17.
- 1:28:04Like you've seen this on Pixels. Like
- 1:28:05there's not that much stuff that I saw
- 1:28:07on the Pixel 17s that I tested that I
- 1:28:09was like, "Oh, this is definitely not
- 1:28:10coming to the Pixels."
- 1:28:12>> Yeah.
- 1:28:12>> From last year.
- 1:28:13>> Yeah, that's the big question and that
- 1:28:14people keep asking me about too cuz
- 1:28:16there's another feature called Creator
- 1:28:17Suite that is also in the video. It's in
- 1:28:20the video section.
- 1:28:21>> It's built in. It's built into the
- 1:28:22pixels only right now. We'll see if it
- 1:28:24comes to Android 17 later because for
- 1:28:26some reason they added the like Tik Tok
- 1:28:29cutout reactions feature to Android.
- 1:28:32>> But the creator suite is a section in
- 1:28:34the video se it's a part of the video
- 1:28:36section that gives you a teleprompter.
- 1:28:39It gives you uh audio enhancement
- 1:28:41features. It gives you uh frame guides
- 1:28:44for like if you're doing 9x6 you can
- 1:28:47pick your aspect ratio
- 1:28:48>> social media and UI guide. Yeah, my take
- 1:28:52on this is that they were they're trying
- 1:28:53to capture the the UGC crowd, which is
- 1:28:56user user generated content. It's the
- 1:28:58people that are like opening 20 boxes a
- 1:28:59day and just making like fake ads.
- 1:29:02>> Um, that's a growing huge amount of
- 1:29:04people, by the way. So, I think that
- 1:29:06Google really wants to capture those
- 1:29:07people. But
- 1:29:08>> teleprompter worked pretty good. I'm not
- 1:29:10>> teleprompter you just input and you can
- 1:29:12speech to text, whatever. You can input
- 1:29:14a couple paragraphs of whatever and then
- 1:29:16you start recording with the feature on
- 1:29:18and it hears you. So it can advance the
- 1:29:20teleprompter as you speak. And it was
- 1:29:22>> which is Google's bread and butter. Like
- 1:29:24voice dictation, understanding your
- 1:29:26voice.
- 1:29:26>> Wait, we should use that for the
- 1:29:27>> I was just thinking,
- 1:29:28>> yeah,
- 1:29:29>> if we were to record our ads on a pixel
- 1:29:31on a pixel, we'll just we'll
- 1:29:33>> Can we not just like put it in the the
- 1:29:36tray of the two-way mirror and then
- 1:29:38>> just have it advance?
- 1:29:39>> Also, I don't know if it would hear us.
- 1:29:41>> That feature, yes, would work well. No,
- 1:29:43it would hear you. I guess the the idea
- 1:29:44is it's showing that text at the top of
- 1:29:46the display right under the selfie
- 1:29:48camera. Yeah. So, it looks like it looks
- 1:29:51like you're making eye contact, but
- 1:29:52you're reading.
- 1:29:52>> Yeah. I'm going to I'm vibe coding this
- 1:29:54for the iPad.
- 1:29:56>> I'm surpris It probably exists. There's
- 1:29:58probably a way to advance a teleprompter
- 1:29:59based on talking.
- 1:30:00>> Yeah. I'm tired of standing up.
- 1:30:02>> Yeah. For those who don't know, we've
- 1:30:03been manually advancing our
- 1:30:05>> like everyone has done since the history
- 1:30:07of time.
- 1:30:08>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:30:09>> Caveman manually advanced.
- 1:30:10>> Perfect for AI. Perfect for AI.
- 1:30:12>> Yeah. So, yeah. Otherwise, it's it's a
- 1:30:15pixel.
- 1:30:16>> Yeah. Otherwise, it's pixel. I just want
- 1:30:17to talk about those software features.
- 1:30:18But
- 1:30:19>> Pixel, buy the Pixel 10.
- 1:30:20>> The big question, the huge huge question
- 1:30:23in the room that I for some reason
- 1:30:25didn't think to ask, which was really
- 1:30:27obvious, is like what which of these
- 1:30:29features are coming to Pixel 10, if any.
- 1:30:31Yes.
- 1:30:32>> Yeah. I feel like they wouldn't have
- 1:30:33answered that question.
- 1:30:34>> That's probably true. What they will say
- 1:30:35is
- 1:30:36>> either we have no first crack at it by
- 1:30:39the Pixel 11.
- 1:30:40>> Yeah. If you want it now, Pixel 11 or we
- 1:30:42have no plans. we have no future plans
- 1:30:44or we do not disclose future plans
- 1:30:46>> or
- 1:30:47>> they'll say something like for the
- 1:30:49messaging feature for highlight they'll
- 1:30:50be like we will work on this and then
- 1:30:53you'll go okay
- 1:30:55>> when's that going to happen
- 1:30:57>> we'll see yeah so
- 1:31:00>> yeah I don't know I like all those
- 1:31:01features but if they come to the Pixel
- 1:31:0310 it's almost like
- 1:31:04>> I like them a lot more
- 1:31:05>> is this phone 10
- 1:31:06>> yeah but does it have matte black rails
- 1:31:08>> that's true
- 1:31:09>> just get some spray paint Marquez that's
- 1:31:11fine
- 1:31:12You're going to give up your insane
- 1:31:14battery life for Matt Black Rails?
- 1:31:15>> No, I do. The OnePlus 15 is still
- 1:31:18>> You can charge at 1500 watts. It's fine.
- 1:31:20>> Yeah, that phone is killer. You're just
- 1:31:22charging at
- 1:31:22>> 20 in the United States.
- 1:31:24>> I want the OnePlus 15 with the Pixels,
- 1:31:29camera chops, and some of the software
- 1:31:32features.
- 1:31:34>> I don't even think
- 1:31:35>> it's not going to happen.
- 1:31:36>> Um anyway, that's not going to happen.
- 1:31:39So yeah, I think we should go right to
- 1:31:41the end,
- 1:31:42>> which is our last segment.
- 1:31:45>> Trivia.
- 1:31:45>> My laptop was muted.
- 1:31:47>> Do it again.
- 1:31:51>> We're back. We're so back.
- 1:31:54I'm never going to forget this podcast.
- 1:31:57This is crazy. Question number one.
- 1:31:59Trevor Noah was surprised by Liverpool
- 1:32:01legend Steven Gerard. But before Mr.
- 1:32:04Gerard came out, Trevor wondered if it
- 1:32:06was actually him or Gemini speaking in
- 1:32:09what regional English accent.
- 1:32:14>> Wait, are we shouting it out?
- 1:32:16>> Oh, yeah. Wait,
- 1:32:20>> do we want
- 1:32:22Liverpool, please?
- 1:32:24>> Hold on.
- 1:32:25>> We could slack.
- 1:32:27>> Do we want to do a a rapid or or do we
- 1:32:30want to slack it to me?
- 1:32:32>> I think that's the whiteboard. I think
- 1:32:33you're the only one that knows the
- 1:32:34answer, Marcus.
- 1:32:35>> Really?
- 1:32:35>> I think he knows the answer.
- 1:32:37>> I might know the answer. I
- 1:32:38>> How confident do you feel, David?
- 1:32:40>> How confident do you feel, Andrew? Are
- 1:32:41you going to say
- 1:32:42>> cochney? No. I'm starting to worry it's
- 1:32:45not a British accent.
- 1:32:48>> I don't know.
- 1:32:49>> Wait, can we are you submit an answer?
- 1:32:52>> All right. Andrew Marquez on three. Say
- 1:32:54what you're thinking. One, two, three.
- 1:32:58>> Neither of you said it.
- 1:32:59>> Dang. Were they
- 1:33:01>> reasonable? What did you say?
- 1:33:03>> Welsh.
- 1:33:03>> No. Uh, you're closer.
- 1:33:07>> I think
- 1:33:07>> counts points.
- 1:33:08>> I think this accent derives from a Welsh
- 1:33:12accent, but it is
- 1:33:13>> Would Welsh people be really mad that I
- 1:33:15said that?
- 1:33:15>> Or would Liverpool people be really mad
- 1:33:17that I said that?
- 1:33:18>> I don't know.
- 1:33:19>> Would Trevor Noah be really mad that I
- 1:33:21said that?
- 1:33:22>> I don't think so. Um,
- 1:33:25you said I care about
- 1:33:26>> I said Gaelic.
- 1:33:27>> No, that is not correct. Um, Gaelic is a
- 1:33:29whole language that is not English.
- 1:33:31>> Yeah. Whoops.
- 1:33:32>> Um, David, do you want to just throw
- 1:33:33something out there, man?
- 1:33:35>> He did.
- 1:33:36>> Liverpool.
- 1:33:37>> Uh, that is technically correct.
- 1:33:39Although not the word I was looking for.
- 1:33:41The word I was looking for was
- 1:33:43>> Scouse.
- 1:33:46>> Yeah, you know, Scouse.
- 1:33:47>> I
- 1:33:48>> He said that he said that in the event.
- 1:33:50He said, "Is that Steven is that
- 1:33:52Liverpool legend Steven Gerard or is
- 1:33:54that Gemini speaking with a Scouse
- 1:33:56accent?" Huh.
- 1:33:57>> I think I'm going to get the next one
- 1:33:58right.
- 1:33:58>> I told you we would learn something new.
- 1:34:00All right, question number two.
- 1:34:01>> Yeah.
- 1:34:02>> Uh, HTC had a case that would cover the
- 1:34:06screen of their phone and show you
- 1:34:08little notification graphics and stuff
- 1:34:09underneath. What was it called?
- 1:34:11>> Shall we yell it out?
- 1:34:12>> No. Slack it to me because I don't like
- 1:34:14it when you all yell cuz I can't hear.
- 1:34:16>> Okay.
- 1:34:17>> Sorry.
- 1:34:18>> Slack it to Ellis or Adam?
- 1:34:20>> Me.
- 1:34:20>> Um,
- 1:34:23>> also there's no way to like if I have
- 1:34:24you guys do it one at a time, then
- 1:34:26>> yeah,
- 1:34:26>> it kind of defeats the purpose. I think
- 1:34:28it's that. But I
- 1:34:31I'm pretty sure I'm right. I think I'm
- 1:34:33right.
- 1:34:33>> All right, let's go around the room.
- 1:34:36David, what did you say?
- 1:34:37>> Dot matrix.
- 1:34:38>> Dot matrix. Andrew,
- 1:34:42>> if I wrote quick thoughts.
- 1:34:44>> Quick dots.
- 1:34:45>> I only wrote dots cuz Marquez said dots.
- 1:34:47>> I wrote dot matrix.
- 1:34:48>> Dot matrix. The answer is
- 1:34:52>> dot view.
- 1:34:53>> Really?
- 1:34:54>> View.
- 1:34:55>> So is that the name? But it was a dot
- 1:34:57matrix case,
- 1:34:57>> I believe. So, yes.
- 1:34:58>> Oh, the case was called the dot matrix
- 1:35:00case
- 1:35:00>> itself was a dot.
- 1:35:02>> I knew that. That's why I thought
- 1:35:04>> Well, no one got any points.
- 1:35:05>> View Marquez still with one, Andrew with
- 1:35:08three, David with three. This is really
- 1:35:11short. It was a 4minute Marquez.
- 1:35:13>> Yeah. Well, it was just a case.
- 1:35:15>> Oh, the dot view case. It was feature
- 1:35:17the dot matrix.
- 1:35:18>> It was, by the way, this is one of them.
- 1:35:20That is the
- 1:35:23>> one of the first like three videos I
- 1:35:25ever shot on a Red camera. Really?
- 1:35:27>> I think it's actually the first one I
- 1:35:29ever shot on a Red camera because it was
- 1:35:30a rented Red Scarlet
- 1:35:33>> and it was the first video I ever
- 1:35:35published in in real 4K. First video I
- 1:35:37ever shot in RAW, first video I ever
- 1:35:39shot in Spain and first video I ever
- 1:35:42shot in Mobile World Congress.
- 1:35:44>> Wait, this is cool.
- 1:35:45>> Yeah, I remember a lot. No, no, no.
- 1:35:47Sorry, sorry, sorry. That's not in
- 1:35:48Spain. That case I shot in my college.
- 1:35:51Um, I first got it in Spain and brought
- 1:35:53it back to my apartment.
