- 0:00hey there storytelling is one of the
- 0:02most powerful tools to inspire others
- 0:04but most of the advice that is out there
- 0:06makes it sound way too complicated but
- 0:09the truth is storytelling is actually
- 0:11pretty easy if you know what really
- 0:13matters in this video I'm going to share
- 0:15the three steps to structure
- 0:17Unforgettable stories but to show you
- 0:19those steps in action let me first share
- 0:21a short story from Ryan rolds see if you
- 0:24can spot the structure that he's using
- 0:26in our rebellious moments I wanted to
- 0:29get an earring as kid I thought that
- 0:30that would be a good idea my brother
- 0:32said you're you're going to die you're
- 0:34going to show up at dinner tonight and
- 0:36and dad there will be a messy stabbing
- 0:37death because Dad will take one of the
- 0:39utensils and stab you I went off with
- 0:42one of my friends and his mom and we
- 0:43went to Sears or wherever the hell you
- 0:45go and she signed the consent for her I
- 0:47got an earring I came home and I
- 0:49remember my face being so flush with
- 0:52blood and heat thinking about this
- 0:54impending disaster that was about to
- 0:56happen and I get to the dinner table he
- 0:59mutters some swear word under his breath
- 1:01or something like you [ __ ] something
- 1:04like that and I kind of look up and I
- 1:06look around and I see that all three of
- 1:09my brothers had gotten an
- 1:11earring to to sort of save me Ryan rolds
- 1:16uses a three-step story structure that I
- 1:18would call C or car now you can think of
- 1:22your story like a car it takes your
- 1:24listeners on this ride that they won't
- 1:27forget step one context in the First
- 1:30Step you want to give some rough context
- 1:32where and when does it take place who's
- 1:34the main character and what does that
- 1:36character want just to remember in Ryan
- 1:38rold story what did he want well he
- 1:40wanted to get an earring and also he
- 1:42wanted to Rebel a little bit against his
- 1:44father the best stories start by sharing
- 1:47the storyteller's goal so maybe you
- 1:50wanted to get a promotion maybe you
- 1:51wanted to attract a partner maybe you
- 1:53wanted to be admired by your friends
- 1:55share what the main character wants to
- 1:58achieve right at the start the moment
- 2:00you share the character's goals your
- 2:02audience will wonder like hey is she
- 2:04going to make it they will keep
- 2:05listening until they know the answer but
- 2:08I'd recommend to keep the context
- 2:10relatively short like a few sentences
- 2:13that's usually enough you want to move
- 2:14to the most important part of the story
- 2:17The adversity as quickly as possible
- 2:20step two adversity every great story has
- 2:23some sort of adversity or challenge that
- 2:26can be a difficult decision a physical
- 2:28problem an emotional problem album any
- 2:30type of challenge in Ryan Renard's story
- 2:33well his challenge was that he was
- 2:35terrified how his father would react to
- 2:37the earring the adversity is the longest
- 2:39and the most crucial part of any story
- 2:42describe the struggle show what is at
- 2:45stake and really let us feel the
- 2:47emotions behind it but instead of
- 2:49telling the emotion show the emotion in
- 2:51Ryan Reynold's story for example instead
- 2:53of saying oh I was nervous he said I was
- 2:57sitting at the table sweat dripping on
- 2:59my pants
- 3:00like he shows how it looks on his body
- 3:03and his face show the emotion but hey
- 3:07for most stories usually one challenge
- 3:09is enough but if you have more time and
- 3:11you really want to build it up you can
- 3:13think of sharing multiple challenges but
- 3:15there the key is just to start with a
- 3:17small challenge then go to the next
- 3:19challenge and then go to the final and
- 3:21biggest challenge all the way at the end
- 3:23of the story step three resolution in
- 3:26that last step you want to share how the
- 3:28adversities overcome what are the
- 3:30actions reactions decisions taken to
- 3:32overcome that problem just to remember
- 3:35in Ryan Reynold's Story how the
- 3:36challenge was overcome well in that case
- 3:38it was his brothers who decided to get
- 3:40an earring as well and so his brothers
- 3:43who saved Ryan from the punishment of
- 3:45his father beautiful moment now I know
- 3:48in real life we have a problem and then
- 3:50we do bunch of things to overcome that
- 3:52problem for your story I would suggest
- 3:54to focus on the one to two most crucial
- 3:58actions to over overcome that problem
- 4:01otherwise it would just get too much too
- 4:03overwhelming once you've shared those
- 4:05actions let us know how does the story
- 4:07turn out at the end how's the character
- 4:09changed how is the character transformed
- 4:11if for example at the beginning they
- 4:13were overwhelmed now they're in control
- 4:15if they were nervous now they're
- 4:17confident if they were sad now they were
- 4:20happy show the transformation a great
- 4:22resolution leaves your audience with
- 4:24this sense of satisfaction like as if
- 4:27they went on this journey themselves and
- 4:29they they really saw this character grow
- 4:32now that we've covered the three steps
- 4:34of car let's see them in action for that
- 4:36we're going to watch a super interesting
- 4:38story from Salma hyek who shares a short
- 4:41story about when she met Eminem I was
- 4:45sex nervous cuz I hadn't slept I was Jed
- 4:47like I was feeling shaky and so this one
- 4:51time I'm drinking the water because my
- 4:53mouth immediately goes dry yeah and I am
- 4:56thinking I'm walking towards it in my
- 4:58head thinking Lose Yourself you know I'm
- 5:02I'm singing the song and he comes out
- 5:04exactly on the side that I am in and I
- 5:07just I'm so I love you I love you you're
- 5:10shaking the water I spit it
- 5:13out I was I drank and I said love it
- 5:17love it that got so much worse oh my God
- 5:21oh my God and then I see that he's like
- 5:24in shock with water all over and I go
- 5:27first of all I'm sorry I'm sorry
- 5:30and they're like go go I'm sorry and
- 5:33then and then go go and go somebody take
- 5:35a
- 5:36picture he took a picture and and then I
- 5:39left you both look ter I so humilated I
- 5:43still had to go and do it and the next
- 5:46day I went home and I said oh my God my
- 5:49hero thinks I'm a freak and and the next
- 5:51morning they asked him because it was a
- 5:53big deal it was a surprise yeah did you
- 5:56enjoy going this time because when he
- 5:58won for that song he didn't go and he
- 6:00and he said something like oh I I really
- 6:03enjoyed it because I got to meet Salma
- 6:06yeah I got yeah that was so what an
- 6:09incredible Storyteller right you can use
- 6:12that car structure for all of your
- 6:14stories but once you've gotten a bit
- 6:16more comfortable with that structure you
- 6:18may also want to think of how can I
- 6:20spice it up how can I tell it in a more
- 6:22interesting way for that you may want to
- 6:24check out this next video in which I
- 6:26share my favorite storytelling
- 6:28techniques enjoy way
