Watch Me Decorate a Moody Living Room | Interior Design — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Since beginning the interior design
- 0:01service about two weeks ago, I've had a
- 0:04flood of emails, inquiries, and orders
- 0:07for me to design the rooms within your
- 0:10guys' homes. One of the very first
- 0:13orders to come in is the room that
- 0:16you're going to see today. I'm going to
- 0:18take a look at my screen and you guys
- 0:20are going to see what I'm looking at
- 0:23here.
- 0:24Rebecca had reached out to me to
- 0:26redesign her living room. Unfortunately,
- 0:28they had had a home fire which took a
- 0:31toll on the majority of their living
- 0:34room and it made it a candidate for a
- 0:35full restyling. The before photos I'm
- 0:38showing you are from the home listing
- 0:40when Rebecca and her husband bought the
- 0:41house and that is what we used to model
- 0:44and recreate this room in a rendering
- 0:47for them. Rebecca's goal was to create a
- 0:50moody room in a bit of a whimsically
- 0:53witty style. Her husband wanted to
- 0:55create a room that he could relax and
- 0:57watch TV in. He is also a music lover
- 1:01and he plays guitar and bass. So, what
- 1:03we needed to do was bring these two
- 1:05styles together all while taking into
- 1:08account that they have three dogs who
- 1:10also spend a lot of time in this room
- 1:12and a pet turtle that needs a 75-gallon
- 1:15aquarium.
- 1:17The challenges they faced were having a
- 1:19functional layout, not being able to
- 1:21decide where to put the TV, despising
- 1:24the current fireplace and that old cubby
- 1:26that you see sitting right above it, and
- 1:29creating a style which could be carried
- 1:31into the rest of the house. So, that
- 1:34means we needed a theme which could move
- 1:37from room to room. So, now we're taking
- 1:41a look at at what we did here. To bring
- 1:44the dark portion of the dark and moody
- 1:46style, we went with black hardwood
- 1:48floors, a black and glossy front door,
- 1:51and a black trim while painting the
- 1:54walls a beige color. You might be
- 1:56wondering why we didn't do dark walls as
- 1:59well. This is because the largest wall
- 2:01of this room actually carries straight
- 2:04back into the kitchen.
- 2:07We needed a paint color which could
- 2:08travel throughout the home and not
- 2:11confine us to the exact design
- 2:14in the living room.
- 2:16Dark walls can make for an incredible
- 2:18room design, but if the whole house is
- 2:20done that way, it really takes away from
- 2:23the impact.
- 2:24We put a nice comfy sofa as the large
- 2:26seating piece, which is perfect for
- 2:28lounging as well as for the dogs. If you
- 2:31look closely, you'll see a little wooden
- 2:33crate box on the floor under the TV so
- 2:36that the dog toys could be placed in
- 2:38there. We mounted the TV and used decor
- 2:41to fill the spaces of the blank walls
- 2:43surrounding it. Rebecca has a a very
- 2:46tall
- 2:47raised ceiling in her home on the main
- 2:50floor here.
- 2:51These walls were not being used to their
- 2:54full potential in terms of decor. So,
- 2:57everything that we did add to decorate
- 3:00the walls
- 3:01was chosen with the idea of of balance.
- 3:04When you're looking at the TV, you don't
- 3:06want one side of the wall to feel too
- 3:09heavy with decor as compared to the
- 3:12other side. At the entry of the home, we
- 3:15set up a console table
- 3:17with some art and decor, but what I
- 3:19really want you to pay attention to is
- 3:22the mirror that we chose here. The
- 3:24ceiling of this room rises to a peak at
- 3:29an angle. So, the height of the ceiling
- 3:32at the entry is much lower. It's like a
- 3:35traditional height. Much lower right
- 3:37above the doorway. Um that is a much
- 3:41lower portion than the height of the
- 3:42ceiling at the center of the living
- 3:45room. Because of this, we have an angled
- 3:47line where the wall meets the ceiling.
- 3:50That traveling line that goes all the
- 3:52way to the top. So, what we did is we
- 3:55chose a mirror whose top is skewed to
- 3:57the left, so it would synchronize with
- 4:00the space.
- 4:02The center coffee table has three
- 4:04objectives, really. It brings wood into
- 4:07the room. It has additional storage if
- 4:09needed. And number three is that you're
- 4:11able to see through it. You'll notice a
- 4:13recurring theme that when we when we
- 4:15work with small spaces, it's a good idea
- 4:18to take a look at furniture pieces whose
- 4:20legs or bodies are are easy to see past
- 4:23or see through.
- 4:25The furniture still serves a purpose,
- 4:27but the eye does not perceive it as
- 4:30taking up a bunch of space because that
- 4:33piece is not solid.
- 4:36Down the wall, you'll see that we have
- 4:37created a gallery wall as well as a
- 4:40statement piece in one design. So,
- 4:43Rebecca's husband will be able to hang
- 4:45one of his showcase guitars while having
- 4:48it complemented by a collection of
- 4:50music-inspired photography of his
- 4:53choosing.
- 4:54We switched out the facade of the
- 4:56fireplace completely. I wanted to go for
- 4:58a more classic and slightly goth style.
- 5:01We filled in the cubby above it because
- 5:03it really wasn't serving any um purpose.
- 5:07It's possible that in a different type
- 5:09of home or a different style of home,
- 5:11you may actually be able to utilize the
- 5:13the cubby for something. Maybe if we
- 5:15were going for uh a bit more of a
- 5:18studious look or if it was within a
- 5:19study, we could fill it with books. But,
- 5:22for this living room, it really served
- 5:24um no purpose. But, now that the cubby
- 5:27is filled in, Rebecca's husband can once
- 5:29again be able to display some of his
- 5:32favorite things. So, of course, we were
- 5:35able to find a place for the turtle and
- 5:37his 75-gallon aquarium. You're seeing
- 5:40fish in it for the purpose of the
- 5:41rendering, but this will be a turtle in
- 5:44here. This This sits against a half
- 5:47wall. In reality, the kitchen is right
- 5:51behind the aquarium in this picture.
- 5:54But, because it was not part of our
- 5:56restyling, it's not included within the
- 5:593D model. So, it looks like it's just
- 6:02drywall in the model that I'm showing
- 6:03you, but there's actually a kitchen
- 6:06right beyond that.
- 6:08Not only were the floors black, we
- 6:10arranged them in a herringbone fashion.
- 6:13We didn't necessarily need to do this,
- 6:15but if you're placing your floors
- 6:18replacing your floors entirely,
- 6:21adding a pattern to the install can just
- 6:23make it a bit more interesting. You've
- 6:25now seen one of the many ways to create
- 6:28a moody living room. Remember that if
- 6:30you would like my help in designing one
- 6:32of the rooms inside your home, you can
- 6:34have that help by clicking the link down
