- 0:00Sometimes when people view a raw,
- 0:02unaltered version of their home, it's
- 0:04difficult for them to envision it as
- 0:07anything other than what they are
- 0:08currently seeing. And if they are able
- 0:11to have some type of idea of what the
- 0:13room is to be, they question themselves
- 0:16as to how much money, time, and effort
- 0:19it will cost them. It really puts a
- 0:21damper on the excitement of revamping a
- 0:23house when you have to ask yourself, is
- 0:26the effort that I'm going to put forth
- 0:28even worth the final product? And if
- 0:31you're renting, these feelings, these
- 0:33cautionary feelings, can become tenfold
- 0:36because you feel as though you're
- 0:37limited as to what you can do. Today,
- 0:40I'm going to show you how we took a
- 0:41rather bland industrial penthouse and
- 0:44turned it into a dark and distinguished
- 0:47home. If you're a returning subscriber,
- 0:49hit the thumbs up. If you're new here,
- 0:51hopefully by the end of this video,
- 0:53you'll be a subscriber. Remember that if
- 0:55you would like my help in designing one
- 0:57of the rooms in your home, you can have
- 0:59that help by clicking the link down in
- 1:01the description. Let's turn to the
- 1:03computer and you'll be able to see what
- 1:05I see. This Chicago penthouse is a
- 1:08rental. Although it has the bones to be
- 1:10something spectacular, neither the
- 1:12owners nor former tenants have ever made
- 1:15any effort to breathe life into the
- 1:17space. These new residents wanted to
- 1:20change that. Their aim was a
- 1:22distinguished dark industrial design.
- 1:25Their question was how to do this
- 1:27without crossing the line of doing too
- 1:29much to a rental. Dark masculine design
- 1:32within industrial spaces can become
- 1:34fairly elaborate in terms of the work
- 1:37necessary to replicate the look, but it
- 1:39doesn't have to be. And that is the
- 1:41point of this video. As you can see from
- 1:44the original photos, the previous
- 1:45occupant seemed to have viewed this home
- 1:47as simply shelter, really, a storage
- 1:51room for their belongings. Our goal was
- 1:54to awaken the hidden potential that lay
- 1:57dormant in this shell of what could be
- 2:00while trying to keep it rental friendly.
- 2:03Here is what we came up with.
- 2:07The change in appearance is about as
- 2:09subtle as getting smacked in the face
- 2:11with a shovel. We've taken a cold,
- 2:13uninspiring warehouse, and we've made it
- 2:15a rich, dark, alluring great room. Three
- 2:19minor updates made one major impact to
- 2:22the base of this room. We painted all of
- 2:25the pillars and the beams black. We
- 2:27installed black blinds, and we placed
- 2:29two dark area rugs
- 2:31across the floor. Mind you, these
- 2:33customers were not looking to create a
- 2:35bat cave.
- 2:36Although they wanted the theme to lean
- 2:39in the dark direction, they did not want
- 2:41to black everything out. There were
- 2:44three main utilizations they asked me to
- 2:47incorporate for them. One was a work
- 2:51space from home, they work from home. A
- 2:53lounge area for typical relaxation and
- 2:56TV watching, and an entertainer's space.
- 3:00This couple also requested that we use a
- 3:02fair amount of pieces from Restoration
- 3:05Hardware, the furniture supplier and
- 3:07designer, as they do love their
- 3:09products. Starting with the left side of
- 3:12the room, the beverage and conversation
- 3:14table.
- 3:15You can't tell in the rendering, but
- 3:17there is a large open kitchen directly
- 3:20connected to this space. The purpose of
- 3:23this area was to rid ourselves of
- 3:26distractions, mainly of the TV, to sit,
- 3:29to enjoy a nice glass of wine or a cup
- 3:31of coffee, truly connecting with your
- 3:34guests while exchanging stories. The
- 3:37four bucket chairs paired with the round
- 3:39table create an intimate setting that
- 3:41encourages this behavior. We installed a
- 3:44mounted beverage rack that is
- 3:46see-through as to not take up floor
- 3:48space, and just as well, it made sure
- 3:51that the brick wall was not being
- 3:53covered and it continued to be a
- 3:55highlight, a natural accent, if you
- 3:58will, within the room. Looking at the TV
- 4:00area, this couple already had a large
- 4:03black leather sofa that we needed to
- 4:05incorporate into the design. No problem
- 4:08there. It fits perfectly with the color
- 4:10scheme that we had picked out. What we
- 4:12did need to make sure is that the
- 4:14accompanying furniture was a different
- 4:17color. Returning to that idea
- 4:19of not making anything too blacked out.
- 4:22So, we found a couple of complementing
- 4:24seating chairs from Restoration Hardware
- 4:27finished in a brown strap fabric along
- 4:29with an ottoman that paired very nicely.
- 4:33Notice that we used black pillows and
- 4:34throws to dress those items and further
- 4:37connect them to the sofa. The TV wall is
- 4:41a bit tricky for the untrained eye. The
- 4:45brick and the concrete do not take up
- 4:48equal portions of this wall as a whole.
- 4:51The brick extends across roughly 65%
- 4:55of the wall, leaving this off-center
- 4:58line where the two materials meet.
- 5:01Because it's off-center, it looks odd
- 5:04when you place the TV and TV console
- 5:07where center should be, where people
- 5:09typically would place it on a wall.
- 5:12Additionally, if we centered the TV on
- 5:14the concrete portion of the wall alone
- 5:17or only the brick portion, that also
- 5:19looked extremely odd, especially in
- 5:21relation to the living room furniture
- 5:24facing the TV wall. To resolve this
- 5:27visual imbalance, we placed the TV and
- 5:30TV console off-center from one another,
- 5:33filling the dead space on the left with
- 5:35a dangling light fixture, and filling
- 5:37the dead space on the right with a floor
- 5:40plant.
- 5:41Let me see how confusing I I can make
- 5:44this. We counterbalanced
- 5:47imbalance through the use of more
- 5:50imbalance resulting in balance.
- 5:53There.
- 5:54The working area is straightforward. We
- 5:55only needed an area that a laptop could
- 5:58be comfortably used, so there was no
- 6:00need to get overly complicated with the
- 6:03workstation. You've now seen a quick
- 6:06overview of creating a dark and
- 6:08distinguished industrial room without
- 6:11being too invasive. If you like the
- 6:13video, hit the thumbs up. If you feel
- 6:15like sticking around a while, feel free
- 6:17to subscribe. See you on the next one.
