0:31eileen warnos who is better known as lee
0:34was just a drifter of 16 when she first
0:36came down to daytona beach
0:39the i-75 was a highway lee warner's new
0:41well
0:42she worked as a prostitute hitching
0:44rides from exit to exit
0:46she claimed to have had thousands of men
0:48over the years
0:49then between 1989 and 1990 she murdered
0:52seven men
0:54the fbi labelled lee warnos america's
0:57first female serial killer
0:59and since then the book of movie deals
1:01poured in
1:03many people were surprised that lee
1:05wallace's girlfriend tyria moore once a
1:07prime suspect herself was not charged
1:11before their arrest police were hunting
1:13for two women popularly referred to as
1:16the angels of death serial killing
1:18seemed to have become a brutal fact of
1:20life tragically they happened so often
1:22they sometimes take on a horrible
1:24familiarity but there's one string of
1:27murders unlike any you've ever heard
1:29about
1:37first there was ted bundy then the
1:39gainesville murders and now central
1:42florida is being threatened with news of
1:44yet another round of serial killings
1:51eight men have been shot to death in
1:52cold blood on central florida highways
1:55including the busy tourist route of i-75
2:03but this time there's an even more
2:04chilling twist to the slayings police
2:06say for the first time in criminal
2:08history these killers may be murdering
2:10with a feminine touch the main suspects
2:12are two young women who play damsels in
2:15distress along the roadway
2:18on january the 9th 1991
2:21lee warnos was arrested at the last
2:23resort biker bar in daytona beach
2:30[Applause]

2:35this is the original police video of lee
2:37warnos confessing to the murder of seven
2:39men
2:40tyria more her girlfriend was not
2:43charged

3:04because most of my neighbor were going
3:06to start to beat him
3:07or we're going to screw me down
3:10you know anyone who don't actually
3:12make it
3:13so i fired and i get away with them
3:18i get away from them i can run to the
3:19front of the car
3:21or jump over the seat or whatever grab
3:23my gun and disturb you
3:25which they would be out of the car most
3:27of them

3:53this is steve glazer lee's lawyer
3:56when i was a child i was abused by my
3:58parents and i developed an imaginary
4:00friend
4:02and i built him yeah
4:07lothar is the protection that i don't
4:09have my dog died so i keep lothar out
4:11here to keep the drug addicts away from
4:13the house and you made loaf by yourself
4:15made him out of my own i made him under
4:17my own hands
4:20i built him
4:22stephen lotha lived in a teepee together
4:24for several years
4:27this is steve's office
4:30before he became a lawyer steve worked
4:32as a musician
4:34he once opened for leon redbone
4:40we're driving with steve to meet arlene
4:42parley who adopted lee warnos last year
4:45arlene a born again christian lives on
4:47this 35-acre horse farm where she breeds
4:49tennessee walker horses

5:00no she breeds wolves too yeah
5:03my main problem so far is that stephen
5:05arlene have told me that lee wants 25
5:07000 for the interview i'd always thought
5:10the son of sam law prevented people from
5:12profiting from their crimes but
5:15apparently the son of sam isn't in
5:16effect anymore
5:20last year arlene employed steve to
5:22handle her adoption of lee wuornos

5:39oh really because you're adopted
5:41and changed her name
5:48there must be a real bond between
5:51how how were you aware that there was
5:52such a strong bond between you what made
5:54you first
5:55feel that
5:57it's a neat story but i can't tell you
5:59but the one thing i can tell you is our
6:00in-laws have since arlene was refusing
6:02to talk until her daughter lee got paid
6:04the five thousand dollars my husband and
6:06myself yes
6:08that was okay to say right but as far as
6:10me and lee and how we got together no i
6:12just i can't i can't start it because
6:14you see i get so excited when i talk
6:15about it that i'll start heading just
6:18into one hurdle which steve would say
6:19okay you could go over one hurdle but
6:21then i can't stop it's like a horse that
6:22loves to jump and when i talk about her
6:25i just i love her and i keep going i
6:27told you it's a fascinating it's a
6:29fascinating story because of the way
6:32all the characters in the play here are
6:34just so very interesting
6:39my doctor in gainesville would probably
6:41even be willing for you to interview him
6:43he is a surgeon
6:45and um when i had my accident last year
6:47on april the
6:4914th
6:51it was horrible i mean i got kicked in
6:53the back it lacerated my liver and broke
6:56three ribs they thought i was going to
6:58die
6:58and my doctor said it was the love of
7:01god going through me as a channel toward
7:04eileen warness that saved my life
7:07they said i was going to die but
7:10the love that i had so much for her and
7:12knew she couldn't be alone
7:14pulled me through they all said i was
7:15going to die they beat my husband he was
7:17out in las vegas at a convention
7:20and i pulled through so i mean there's a
7:22lot there's a lot to this that just
7:25it's like he says fascinating
7:32so the next stage is really to come up
7:34with a counter offer
7:36no the react stage is going with 25 000
7:39right
7:40but okay okay well then
7:42if you don't think the next thing to do
7:43is to really get a counter offer unless
7:45if and let's tell her something okay
7:48because this way like i told you before
7:49you left i said you know when you
7:51please don't come here with the
7:52understanding
7:53i was perfectly honest with you don't
7:55come here with the understanding that
7:56she'll even talk with you without paying
7:59and i told you that

8:05pay the money to
8:07what would pay money to you or to
8:10as as
8:11as her lego as her mom and then um steve
8:14gets a percentage as our agent

8:20very tiny percentage this poor man works
8:22for nothing in fact arlene and lee's
8:25relationship is extremely well
8:27documented
8:28and it seemed far cheaper at this stage
8:30to buy in some local tv footage
8:33levy county horse farm owner arlene
8:35crowley has come to the aid of accused
8:38serial murderer eileen wuornos
8:40prowly says she and urno speak on the
8:42phone to each other frequently we have
8:44become super good friends ever since
8:47then she is a beautiful woman she is not
8:49at all like the media has portrayed her
8:52to be she is very kind compassionate um
8:55she's got a heart of gold this
8:57thanksgiving should be a special one for
8:59the prawley family because this year
9:01they hope to be with her newly adopted
9:03daughter
9:04but she isn't a newborn she's 35 year
9:06old eileen warno's her eyes there was
9:09just something about her eyes that
9:11before we ever knew her there was
9:13something that deep within me said she
9:15is not capable of doing what they are
9:18accusing her of doing
9:19over the next few weeks a strange
9:22friendship blossomed with both women
9:24exchanging daily letters phone calls and
9:27even poetry in one poem aileen wrote you
9:31are way too kind to get to know my kind
9:33of mind
9:35i felt like i had known this person
9:37forever and that was the weirdest
9:39feeling to me because i've never
9:41i've never experienced that before there
9:43are times when i'm there and she's so
9:45sad and i know if i could just hold her
9:48and pray over her it would hit her up it
9:50would make her feel better it would give
9:52her
9:53hope
9:54and to not be able to do that at this
9:57point it's about driving me nuts i know
9:59that it's not motivated by anything like
10:01greed
10:02or self betterment or improvement or
10:04anything like that i know this is a
10:06religious spiritual
10:08uh desire and that arlene and robert are
10:10going to undertake
10:11prolly says she's not interested in any
10:13book or movie deals and her only
10:15motivation for this adoption is good
10:18old-fashioned christian love
10:20and the desire to have a family after
10:22all these years
10:27while we were waiting for stephen arlene
10:28to hear back from lee warnos we traveled
10:30to daytona beach where leewanos had last
10:33lived
10:34police divers recovered the 22-caliber
10:36pistol that lee warner seduced in all
10:38seven murders from this lagoon in
10:40daytona beach
10:42lee lived here with tyria moore her
10:44lover for over five years
10:46a woman she referred to as her wife and
10:48whom she was desperately in love with
10:50they lived together at this motel a fair
10:52view and it was here that lee warnos and
10:55tyria moore first saw the police
10:57composites themselves
10:59witnesses claimed to have seen them
11:00driving one of the murder victims cars
11:03tyria moore fled to her family's home in
11:06ohio leaving lee and eventually
11:08betraying lee and testifying against her
11:10in court
11:12lee warnos was charged with all seven
11:14murders
11:15taraya moore became the main police
11:17witness against her
11:22this is lee warnock says she was first
11:24being charged
11:25a prostitute from the age of 14
11:28lee had a long history of neglect and
11:30sexual abuse
11:31lee was born in 1956 in troy michigan
11:35three months later she was abandoned by
11:37her mother
11:38in 1963 her father committed suicide in
11:41prison he was serving a sentence for
11:43sodomizing a seven-year-old child
11:46tyria moore represented the most stable
11:48relationship in her life understand the
11:50nature of georgia

14:19next morning
14:20but as far as
14:22knowing anything about her personality
14:24or anything i don't really know anything
14:26and she was
14:29she was a flat cracker you know so
14:30nobody in here tried to pick her up

14:39following day when the human bomb was
14:40performing
14:42someone who reportedly knew lee well

17:23i was real sickened by what she said

17:29there's partial truth to that but most
17:32of that i don't know where it came from
17:33or who got it or nothing about it and
17:35you can check any film anywhere in the
17:36country or anybody's got it and i've
17:38never said that

17:41it goes along the lines that
17:43she told me one time
17:45that the idea was that she'd like to lay
17:47in bed out in the middle of forest the
17:48woods or somewhere in a mountain or
17:49something have a hood overhead or
17:51something and somebody crawled into the
17:52window they said no they had the hood on
17:54or something and would rape her this and
17:56that kind of [ __ ] and she liked that
17:58i mean as far as all these other things
17:59go pertaining to her there's no reality
18:01that she hated men or
18:05i just got the feeling she's what she
18:06was a dyke except i didn't know she was
18:08a killer
18:09there's no way i could know that but i
18:11mean could you tell that when you made
18:12laptop
18:15no not particularly she just probably
18:17liked it either way whatever came along
18:20didn't really seem to matter much it's
18:22just another bad experience i'm sure for
18:23both of us
18:25but that is much garbage like say once
18:29you ask them where they got the [ __ ]

18:36them the lies or authorize them to write

18:56killing factors i didn't know about and
18:58so it's just two people getting along

19:06you couldn't have felt that she hated
19:08men
19:11because she's been i never really get a
19:12minute
19:13i never really gave up much thought one
19:15way or the other just
19:17i don't know whatever turned her on at

19:21but from everything i've heard and read
19:23and seen since not pertaining to this
19:25i'm talking about what's been on tv why

19:48lover whoever it is all i ever heard was
19:50tie somebody i don't know anything else
19:53so if you want any answers to those
19:54questions you'll have to ask those

19:58whether it be uh alien or so eileen
20:01elaine whatever name is herself
20:06before she received her first death
20:08sentence lee planned to live in this
20:10cottage on arlene's ranch and help her
20:12to breed horses
20:18arlene also raises wolves
20:23she believes they represent an important
20:25part of our spiritual lives all too
20:27often forgotten today
20:32we've been in florida a week now and
20:34nothing had been heard from lee
20:37arlene always maintained that she and
20:38lee had a very close relationship but
20:41something was obviously wrong
20:43arlene now seemed to be negotiating her
20:45own personal appearance fee entirely
20:48separate from liz
20:49she quoted the montel williams show as
20:51paying ten thousand dollars
20:54but how much do you think you want if we

22:17sentence for attempted rape
22:19many think it was mallory's alleged rape
22:21of lee that started her off on her
22:23killings he put the cord around my neck

25:56all that pain
25:58i thought to myself i gotta fight i'm
26:00gonna die this guy is gonna play with me
26:02and play with me and then he's gonna
26:04kill me he's already said he's gonna
26:05kill me he's he's already seen killed
26:08other girls
26:09i gotta fight
26:11i jumped up real fast and i spit in his
26:13face
26:14and he said you're a dead [ __ ] you're
26:16dead he's wiping his eyes
26:18and i laid down real quick and i grabbed
26:21my bag
26:23and he was starting to come forward for
26:26me when i grabbed my bag and drew
26:29whipped my pistol out toward him and he
26:31was coming toward me with his right
26:33arm i believe
26:34and i shot immediately and i think i
26:36shot twice as fast as i could
26:39lee had expected to be acquitted but
26:42then judge blunt took the unusual move
26:44of allowing evidence of the other six
26:46murders to be presented until by warn of
26:49the governor of the state of florida you
26:50eileen and carol warn us be electrocuted
26:53until you are dead
26:55and may god have mercy upon your course

27:09most of us will probably never worry
27:11about spending time in jail but if you
27:13are ever involved in the criminal
27:15justice system you will need a lawyer
27:17who can explain the system to you in a
27:19completely unexpected legal move lee
27:21with arlene's help decided to hire steve
27:24to defend on the next three murder
27:26charges and to fire her public defender
27:28trish jenkins
27:29steve attracted enormous media attention
27:32when he entered a guilty or no contest
27:34plea to the next three murders
27:37the born again arlene paraly believed
27:39lee should come clean and confess her
27:41sins
27:42was led from marion county jail she gave
27:44no indication that she would plead no
27:45contest to three murder charges instead
27:48talking about dropping her public
27:49defenders and hiring private attorney
27:51steve glaser but only seconds after
27:53being named her attorney glazer
27:54surprised everyone and told the court
27:56that wuernos wanted to change her plea
27:58with her adoptive mother watching on the
28:01nation's first known serial killer
28:03pleaded no contest to killing dick
28:05humphreys and troy burris in marion
28:07county david spears in citrus county
28:10legally the no contest plea is viewed as
28:12a guilty plea and because there is no
28:14plea agreement burnout still faces the
28:16death penalty in each case an unusual
28:18legal prospect that judge thomas sueya
28:21was obviously aware of as he carefully
28:23questioned wuernos about her decision
28:25god has forgiven her for what she's done
28:27and
28:28our state has the death penalty so why
28:30not go for it i mean wow she could be
28:32home with jesus in a matter of few years
28:34the theory of the philosophy of jesus
28:36christ if you're going to
28:39believe that you're saved by jesus
28:41christ the first thing you have to do is
28:43confess confess your sins and and and
28:46that's between her and god and that's
28:47what she's doing here she'd be much
28:49better off in heaven i mean if i had the
28:51choice i'd rather be up there but god
28:53has not chosen for me to go but i mean
28:56he has an open door here i have made
28:58peace with my lord and i have asked
29:00forgiveness
29:02i am sorry that my acts of self-defense
29:04ended up in court like this but i take
29:07full responsibility for my actions it
29:09was them or me
29:11i am sorry for all the pain that my
29:13actions have caused
29:15i am prepared to die if you say it is
29:17necessary
29:22but i am not by pleading guilty it
29:24appeared that lee warnos was in reality
29:26hoping for mercy and forgiveness but
29:28that is not what happened

29:34to death for the murder of troy burris
29:37case number 91-304
29:40i sentence you to death for the murder
29:42of charles humphries case number
29:4491-112 citrus county case number i
29:47sentence you to death for the murder of
29:49david spears

30:20other thing that i want to say that i
30:22think needs to be said i know i was
30:24raped you weren't nothing but a bunch of

30:28now putting somebody who was raped

30:45received the death sentences just before
30:47they
30:48serve him one last meal
30:52but shave his head then tell him how he

32:12and the rich man's never died upon the
32:14chair
32:15we traveled down to visit lee at this
32:17maximum security prison on the edge of
32:19the everglades a seven hour trip from
32:22gainesville where steve and arlene live
32:24i learned that lee was now enormously
32:26depressed she desperately missed tyria
32:28and barely communicated with anyone
32:31arlene and steve still hadn't heard from
32:33lee since we'd first arrived in florida
32:35over two weeks ago and i realized their
32:37relationship with lee was not as close
32:39as i had first thought
32:47lee is living in a 6x8 cell on death row
32:50we had arranged through the
32:52superintendent to meet her at the prison
32:54chapel
32:56[Music]
32:58um i'm lieutenant dodrill and we were
33:00just trying to get um
33:02inmate warnos we told her that you were
33:04here and she's refusing uh a visit she's
33:07refusing a visit i just told her that i
33:10just told the officer in confinement to
33:11get it in writing
33:13so should we have it written we're going
33:15to get it in right i can't believe this
33:17she says um somebody man her laundry is
33:19not back and she doesn't want to wear a
33:21dress and she's
33:24she doesn't have to wear a dress
33:26but she she won't get dressed probably
33:29she won't go
33:30yeah so that's ridiculous because we've
33:32come all the way down from gainesville i
33:34know uh every time we ask her you know
33:37she's just really uncooperative she's
33:39just
33:41and we can't force it to do it so
33:43but she's but i am getting it to write
33:45it in writing so that i won't get in
33:47trouble for not having you visit oh yeah
33:52hello
33:59hi
34:03we were looking for you
34:04you walk
34:06can this eat what's not that
34:08why didn't you drive out because the
34:10gate was locked down
34:13oh it's just for the horses not to get
34:15out
34:16so how did it go
34:17well agree to roll their eyes this is
34:19not good i have more bums
34:22this is terrible
34:23she wouldn't uh she wouldn't talk to us
34:26she wouldn't see us why
34:29no idea
34:31she just wouldn't
34:34she just didn't want to talk did not say
34:36anything didn't want to communicate so
34:39we didn't get anywhere
34:43that's a shock that's a total shock well
34:46steve's going thursday so go back with
34:47steve i mean do you have any idea why
34:49she might not have wanted to arlene and
34:51steve were still protesting that they
34:53didn't know what was wrong with lee
34:55they seemed unable to explain why they
34:57still hadn't heard from her so in a
34:59sense
35:00you know now we're trying to find out
35:01from you what
35:04the only thing i can think of is because
35:07i
35:08was honest with her and sort of
35:10disciplinarian
35:12that perhaps she was trying to punish
35:15both steve and i you know we lost the
35:17trial and yet she's she said i want to
35:19die how are you disciplinarian i mean
35:22what i wrote letters and i told her that
35:24she acted terrible in the courtroom and
35:26that
35:27you know she better improve her behavior
35:29and she would is that when she
35:31is that when she gave the judge the bird
35:33yes yes and i wrote a very strong letter
35:37i also told her i was sick of her
35:38doubting me and doubting steve that he
35:41was a very honest human being he did
35:42just what she wanted and because we lost
35:44that was not his fault
35:46so i feel in a sense that perhaps with
35:49the money
35:51she knows the
35:52devastation financially that we are in
35:55and she could help now and this is her
35:58way of punishing me and punishing steve
36:01by saying well good
36:03we could get this money if i gave an
36:05interview i'm not doing it why do you
36:08think she was so mad at both of you at
36:09the end of the last trial because we
36:11lost because she has three death
36:12sentences she said she wanted to die but
36:15in her heart she wants to live
36:17so you know how you say
36:20i'm hungry i'm hungry feed me but you
36:21really don't want to eat
36:23that's basically it i want to die i want
36:25to die but when she got the three death
36:26sentences she was furious that's why she
36:27gave him the bird if it comes it comes
36:30and when it comes steve though was still
36:32insisting lee wanted to die his whole
36:35justification for entering a guilty plea
36:37for lee was that she wanted to go to the
36:39chair and you're sure she wants to go to
36:41the electric chair yes i'm sure
36:44i'm sure that uh
36:46in her anger and grief and torment
36:50and the fact that it's very very hard to
36:51live with the fact that she killed seven
36:53men seven people
36:56that she does want to die for it
37:00she cried in the courtroom when she read
37:01her statement she said i'm not afraid to
37:03die
37:04but if you feel it necessary to kill me
37:06so be it
37:15and as i told her from the beginning
37:19a
37:20helper
37:22i don't feel comfortable
37:26but i'll sit there with her when they
37:27strap her in she uh she asked that i'd
37:30be there for her she said
37:32well will you be there with me and i
37:33said lee you're allowed to have a lawyer
37:35and a
37:37member of the clergy
37:39if you want me there i'll i'll
37:41i'll walk right up to there with you
37:43and i'll be with you in the final
37:44moments
37:47then i'll have to deal with the i'll
37:48have to deal with uh
37:51that pain later i have spoken to several
37:54lawyers who have witnessed the execution
37:56of their clients
37:58and they assured me it's something that
37:59they live with forever
38:01it's nothing i look forward to but as
38:03her friend and i hope i'm becoming her
38:05friend i would i will be there for her
38:09and i'll give her the advice that woody
38:10allen gave in his movie
38:12i think it was take the i was i don't
38:14remember the movie it might have been
38:15taking the money and run
38:17the lawyer's advice to the client who
38:19gets the electric chair is don't sit
38:21down
38:26they call this the death house
38:28if lee is electrocuted she will be the
38:30first woman ever in the state of florida
38:33to have gone to the chair
38:39this is the cell that the inmate is kept
38:41in
38:42up to seven days prior to his execution
38:44about five o'clock in the morning he's
38:46brought out where he is shaved his head
38:49is shaved and his right leg is shaved
38:52and then he is brought through this door
38:54which proceeds down a quarter which goes
38:56to where the luxury chair is
39:01as he's going down the hallways he's
39:03escorted by the assistant superintendent
39:05and the correctional officer chief and
39:07is brought in here to the actual chamber
39:10at this point
39:11he is seated in the chair in front of
39:14the news media witnesses and the
39:16official witnesses who are already
39:17seated in the
39:18witness area
39:20he's brought in and put into the chair
39:22and the straps are placed around his
39:24chest
39:26and around his lap and on his arms and
39:29then his legs are placed into these
39:31straps and secured there
39:34after the inmate is secured in the chair
39:36the superintendent will check the straps
39:38and ensure that they're all in place
39:40like they should be he will then come
39:43over to the microphone that we have here
39:45in the witness in the chamber
39:47and remove the microphone
39:49and hold it up for the inmate to make a
39:51last statement to he'll ask the inmate
39:53do you have a last statement
39:55and he will either sometimes say
39:56something or sometimes won't
40:00after that is completed the
40:01superintendent will go over to the
40:02telephone
40:03and check with the governor's office to
40:05see if there's any last-minute stays
40:09if he hears no last-minute stays from
40:11the governor's office
40:13the electrode then is placed on top of
40:15the inmate's head
40:16it's an actual cap with an electrode
40:18inside
40:19it's secured onto his head
40:22one of these electrodes here is then
40:25fastened onto the top of the head piece
40:28another device is placed around his calf
40:31and the other electrode is placed onto
40:33that piece
40:37after that is completed the
40:39superintendent will make a motion to the
40:41executioner who is here inside the
40:43execution chamber where the executioner
40:45is
40:47and he will nod to the executioner to go
40:50ahead
40:51and proceed with the execution
40:53the executioner will throw a switch
40:55the switch will start an automatic cycle
40:58starting out at 2400 volts at about
41:00eight amps
41:02at this point
41:03after they have seen that it has been
41:06carried out
41:07they observe some
41:08tendencies of the inmate when the
41:10voltage hits him to tense up
41:13it's almost simulating as if someone was
41:15lifting weights and that's the only
41:17motion that you see out of the inmate is
41:18just a tensing of the muscles
41:22after that its cycle is completed
41:24there's two physicians who are sitting
41:25here in the chamber who come over and
41:28examine the body to see
41:30that if the inmate is in fact dead
41:36it was six am steve was off to visit lee
41:39and hopefully get us in the following
41:41day
41:42steve said it was a seven joint ride to
41:44the prison and he brought along a tape
41:46of his own music with him singing and
41:48playing all the instruments especially
41:50for the occasion

42:28let me turn the keys over to you
42:30all right and if i'm not out in three
42:32and a half hours call the swat team
42:38steve was nervous he hadn't talked to
42:41lee for a month and didn't know how she
42:42wanted to plead at the next trial at
42:44pasco county in five days time
42:47if lee changed her plea to not guilty
42:50steve told us that he was going to have
42:51to resign from the case because he
42:54didn't have the necessary resources to
42:56fight it
42:57i'd finally given in and paid steve ten
43:00thousand dollars a figure we'd settled
43:02on instead of the 25 apparently with
43:04lee's consent
43:06suddenly this guard stepped out of the
43:08guard house and stopped us the entire
43:10prison was locked down and we learned
43:12we'd committed a major security
43:14violation by driving along the perimeter
43:16fence
43:19knife
43:20no
43:20crystal shotgun
43:37okay
43:40all right here's the contract i'll just
43:42have her sign it the trip to the prison
43:44had gone well
43:45lee warnos was going to keep to her no
43:47contest guilty plea for the trial at
43:49pasco the following week and steve and
43:51arlene were to be paid 2 500 apiece
43:56what's davey crockett doing on the 100
43:58bill here i am paying arlene her money
44:00in advance in exchange for a proper
44:02interview and additional information
44:04a thousand dollars on sunup in the
44:06fourth race at belmont
44:19steve then got concerned about his
44:21payment he wants to know what she wants
44:23to know when i was gonna get paid so i
44:25told her you know i trusted to
44:27i trust you guys that you'll pay me when
44:28you when you're gonna pay me
44:31when are we gonna pay yeah
44:33um
44:34well originally we were going to pay
44:35half the money up front you want to just
44:36pay me all the way at the end no problem
44:38with me
44:39the i have trust my fellow person
44:43one thousand dollars of the final
44:44payment was to go to lee warnos directly
44:47in prison
44:48i had always thought the son of sam law
44:50would prevent this kind of payment but
44:52steve said son of sam isn't in effect
44:55anymore
44:57and how did you first get to hear of her
44:59i read about her in the newspaper i saw
45:01her pictures in the paper and my dad was
45:04in the hospital with a heart attack
45:07and my husband and i had nothing to do
45:08but read papers and so we read the
45:10papers on her
45:12and
45:13as soon as we saw the pictures in the
45:16paper her eyes i mean i read people's
45:18eyes and i just knew she was not capable
45:20of being a serial killer and doing what
45:22they said so
45:24we prayed for two and a half weeks and
45:27finally at the end of two and a half
45:28weeks we reached out to her
45:31through a letter and i told her that um
45:34she was going to think i was crazy but
45:36that jesus himself told me to write to
45:38her and she said that when she first got
45:41arrested she went and said god if you
45:43were real send a christian woman into my
45:45life to befriend me through this mess
45:48so she got my letter and i mean it was
45:49just like instant explosion like poof
45:53here's this person
45:55so
45:57that's how it started
45:58and
45:59lots of phone calls later and hundreds
46:01of letters later and
46:03thousands of dollars of phone bills
46:06here we are
46:09arlene believed lee warner should take
46:11the guilty no contest plea and confess
46:13her sins to jesus and this is my
46:15favorite picture
46:17this is so steven lee in the courtroom
46:20after she came clean she uh i mean when
46:23she how do you mean ken clean pleaded no
46:25contest
46:27amazing thing about it is that
46:29you can see the look on her face it's
46:31one of the few pictures
46:32that anyone has ever taken of her that
46:34show that she's you know happy or
46:36content this is almost like the first
46:38time she's actually you know i think
46:40she's relieved if you look at her face
46:41there she's actually smiling
46:43relieved most of the pictures that the
46:46press put in the newspaper are always
46:47the unflattering ones

47:00now that leah being paid we returned to
47:02the prison the following day
47:06all right we've come to try and uh do uh
47:09to to see lee warnos
47:12let me hear you sir
47:14eileen is that what you're saying yeah
47:16lee lee
47:18please i need your driver's licenses
47:19drive his license and her driver's
47:21license please oh you need your driver's
47:22license yes sir
47:25okay we're gonna have to go back to the
47:27car and get them you have to be mr
47:29broomfield that's right yeah you were
47:31the one that was held hostage at the
47:32rear gate when i spoke to you i was the
47:34one who was what you were being held
47:36plastic at the rear gate remember
47:38oh we we unfortunately drove around
47:41called me yeah we photographed the
47:43institution and uh got into a lot of
47:45trouble remember
47:46you need a picture id or a driver's
47:48license
48:02thank you
48:04we waited for an hour for the prison
48:06escort to take us through
48:07[Music]
48:09then we heard lee was again refusing to
48:11talk
48:14apparently since tyria betrayed him to
48:16the police lee just wanted to be left
48:18alone in herself there's been enormous
48:20public pressure to send it to the chair
48:22and each county wants to be seen to be
48:24the one to do it you don't want to be
48:25present for today's hearing because i'm
48:27tired of this re-election jazz or just
48:30trying to get promotional ladder
48:31climbing and political prestige from
48:34this and i'm sick and tired of this i'll
48:37probably get three more death row
48:38sentences and then i gotta go to pasco
48:40and dixon for two more uh death row how
48:43many times you gotta kill me you know i
48:44mean this is this is [ __ ]
48:47i don't need to be doing this
48:55several of the victims families have
48:57said they want to be present at the
48:58execution
49:00steve is even talking about selling the
49:01film rights off to the highest bidder to
49:04publicize the horrors of the chair
49:07the people that did this just cannot
49:08imagine
49:09the grief the hurt the anguish that they
49:12have caused
49:14this family
49:16this is a man that i have
49:19i hope she meets up with quote old
49:22sparky
49:25you know who old sparky is
49:29and if the other lady sold wishes
49:31she could stand there and hold her hand
49:33as far as i'm concerned
49:35people were also concerned that tyria
49:37moore lee's girlfriend once a prime
49:40suspect had not come forward earlier and
49:42i feel like the other girl
49:45could have stopped some of them if she'd
49:47come forward in time
49:48she knew about them some of them
49:51but she didn't say anything
49:54maybe
49:55save four men could have been saved
49:58if she had and she did not and mrs
50:00prater's brother was the fourth victim
50:02lee meanwhile became increasingly
50:04withdrawn and hostile
50:06i gladly don't want him she doesn't want
50:08to okay all right you don't have to be
50:10here but let me give it some thought and
50:11i'll decide whether
50:13okay
50:14i don't care what the sentence is i'm
50:16already on death row i'm going to see
50:17the chair i don't this is all
50:19reelectional purposes this is not for
50:21nothing but get you guys reelected and
50:24this is a bunch of [ __ ] this doesn't
50:25even need to happen i'm trying to save
50:27taxpayers money you people don't care
50:30you want to press time with a be the
50:32jury and everything else to try to
50:33impress the public and all i want to do
50:36is go back to prison wait for the chair
50:38and get the hell off this planet that's
50:40full of evil and your corruption in
50:42these courtrooms
50:47it was in these woods that lee warnos
50:49claimed richard mallory raped and abused
50:51her
50:52many believed her testimony but then
50:54what about the other six victims
50:57we contacted the police who conducted
50:59the investigation
51:00trisha jenkins lee's ex-public defender
51:03the psychiatrist who examined her and
51:05taria moore her lover but all refused to
51:07talk
51:09at her trial lee warnos was medically
51:11described as a damaged and primitive
51:13child who sees the world as a place full
51:16of evil spirits and ghosts
51:18she was described as having
51:20uncontrollable rages and temper tantrums
51:23and being too immature to properly grasp
51:25the finality of death
51:30mike reynolds has just published a book
51:32on warner's called dead ends
51:35well lee's life was uh
51:37this is pretty much you had run out
51:38as a prostitute which was never that uh
51:41very successful with she never put much
51:43effort into it
51:44lee never put much effort into her her
51:47crimes either it was crimes prior to
51:49that
51:51she didn't have a much of a commodity
51:53out there
51:55she was overweight
51:57she was berry
51:59she never dressed as a prostitute never
52:01wore makeup she wore cut offs sneakers a
52:04camo t-shirt and a cap and glasses
52:06standing on the side of the road and her
52:09and her hustle as you look at her hustle
52:11she wasn't soliciting she would get in
52:12the car and gauge the situation say i'm
52:14uh you know these are my kids here and
52:16show the photographs of the children
52:18that
52:18want
52:19laurie grody's children it was
52:21aunt's sister's children
52:23and give him some song and dance story i
52:25need some money and i'll tell you what
52:27i'll do this for you you know we could
52:29go over here in the woods and do this it
52:30was
52:32she was running out of she was running
52:34out of options

52:48it was the night before the trial at
52:49pasco county
52:52other lawyers were accusing steve of
52:53greasing lee's path to the electric
52:55chair and being unfit to represent her
52:59they would turn their backs on steve as
53:01he walked into the courthouse there's no
53:04contest please

53:15pretending that i'm
53:17doing well
53:21when the rich
53:22make bell
53:24and the poor
53:25stay in jail
53:27i wonder

53:30doing here steve still insists lee wants
53:33to die
53:34so why did she get so
53:37angry when she was sentenced i mean why
53:39did why did she have the outburst that
53:40she had in court why did she give the
53:42judge the bird why you know why did she
53:44react to you and to arlene in the way
53:47that she did after that sentence was
53:49passed if
53:50she maybe you i you misunderstand what i
53:54have
53:55no problems with lee lee had no problems
53:57with me after that play
53:58well i thought she there was a long time
54:00when
54:01she didn't write to either of you or no
54:03all right we're talking on march 31st
54:06she entered a change of plea
54:07may 15th
54:09she was sentenced
54:13may 15th till now is one that's only
54:15it's
54:1630 days
54:17in that 30 day period
54:19i have written to lead twice and seen
54:21her
54:23and i
54:24well you just saw yeah i just saw
54:31we are finally about to see lee warnos
54:33on her way to court
54:34all the press attention has made her
54:36into something of a star
54:38even before her arrest up to 15
54:40hollywood movie companies were competing
54:42for her story
54:44to date republic pitchers and cbs have
54:47produced a tv movie called overkill
54:50starring jean smart as lee warnos and
54:52there are two feature films being
54:54negotiated
54:56there are also the chat shows
54:57documentaries and the books
54:59the deal on on a killing day gives
55:02arlene crowley 33 on every paperback
55:05solved
55:09lee facing yet another death sentence
55:11seemed to be more upset about these
55:12deals than anything else
55:15yes i'd like to say
55:18that
55:24agreement
55:28to the public and to all the people of
55:30the world
55:33and to the news personnel
55:37that have been
55:38working on this these trials and these
55:41cases for the past 16 months that had
55:44stated defamations and mendacious lies
55:46of 98.6
55:48magazines and news articles
55:50to
55:51probably paid off by the cops to vile my
55:54character make me look like monster and
55:56deranged or something like a jeff dahmer
55:58which i'm not
56:00uh
56:04i intend to expose the crooked cops to
56:06the to the people
56:09all over the world not just america not
56:12just florida all over the world before i
56:15die
56:17and i also feel that
56:21the movie overkill that is a total
56:23fictional lie
56:28that they
56:29framed me as a first time serial female
56:33serial killer for the title
56:35for that movie
56:38for
56:39first female serial killer is not what i
56:41am
56:42and i'm not even near it and my
56:44confessions prove it yet they did not
56:46they have taken the confessions and gone
56:49200 percent against what my confession
56:51stated
56:52to get their bogus movie out
56:56and it stated self-defense totally which
56:59they hid from the jury at the mallory
57:01trial and they've have hid from the
57:03public eye
57:05lee warnos insists she's not a serial
57:08killer that she did not stalk her
57:10victims or plan her crimes
57:12as with the movie deals lee is also
57:14surrounded by a web of experts or
57:17competing with her own theories on her
57:18behavior
57:20lee is portrayed as anything from a
57:22neglected and abused child who hates her
57:24father and is murdering him over and
57:26over again to a sadist who takes
57:28pleasure in the agony of her victims
57:31geneticists have asked for samples of
57:33lee's body tissue
57:34and there are plans to preserve lee
57:36warnos's brain for future
57:38experimentation that money thank you
57:49sheriff
57:50we're chasing sheriff don moorland
57:52across the marion county car park
57:55sheriff morland has avoided our phone
57:56inquiries about three of his officers
57:58reportedly having had movie discussions
58:01with hollywood a month prior to lee's
58:03arrest
58:04we've also contacted the public
58:06defender's office the state attorney's
58:08office and the public prosecutor's
58:10office
58:11all of whom have refused to talk to us
58:15we tried to get sheriff morland to speak
58:17all he did was to lock the door of this
58:19public building from the inside

58:29the only person who would talk to us was
58:31sergeant brian jarvis of the marion
58:32county police force who led the murder
58:35investigation
58:36i asked him whether the case had caused
58:38his demotions you were
58:40demoted into the traffic right i was
58:42actually transferred back into the
58:44patrol division
58:46it had followed a month of continual
58:49harassment
58:50on the job in the current position i was
58:52in which ultimately started when captain
58:55vinegar had realized that i
58:57found out about their plan
58:59to work
59:00with tyria moore in obtaining a movie
59:03rights package
59:04and who is tyria tyria moore
59:07during the course of this investigation
59:09she was
59:11targeted as one of the two
59:13suspected killers of these men
59:17and uh
59:18there was a lot of evidence a state
59:20attorney's report found that three of
59:22jarvis's fellow officers captain vinegar
59:24sergeant munster and major dan henry
59:27were involved in movie discussions with
59:29tyria moore after lee's arrest yeah
59:31ultimately when the when the uh arrests
59:34came
59:35lee wuornos was charged with the murder
59:37and tyria moore was not charged with
59:39anything but she was made a uh estate's
59:42witness
59:43and she was
59:44working with these
59:46fellow officers on obtaining movie
59:48rights
59:51i met her in a bar
59:53the police had found tyria in ohio
59:56where she agreed to set up her lover to
59:58confess
59:59we were sitting on the floor watching tv
1:00:02and she just come out and said i have
1:00:04something to tell you
1:00:06and i asked her what
1:00:07and she said that she had shot and
1:00:09killed a man that day
1:00:11she loved you didn't she
1:00:13yes
1:00:15she said she'd do anything for you [ __ ]
1:00:18yes she did
1:00:20in order for her to say what you wanted
1:00:22her to he lied to her
1:00:24right
1:00:27it was yes fact much more than a couple
1:00:29of times wasn't it
1:00:32it could have been do you recall him
1:00:36yes i did
1:00:41tahrir moore agreed with sergeant
1:00:43jarvis's superiors to help get lee to
1:00:45confess
1:00:47tyria was brought back down to marion
1:00:49county and housed in a motel
1:00:51from the motel tariyama had a number of
1:00:53phone conversations with lee who at that
1:00:56time was held in custody in jail but had
1:00:58not yet confessed to the murders
1:01:00these conversations were monitored and
1:01:02made under police supervision

1:04:46we get affected for example in october
1:04:49on october 31st
1:04:51just days after depositions had been
1:04:53taken on the case i came home from work
1:04:55and
1:04:56went to my back door and noticed a note
1:04:58in the door
1:05:00and the
1:05:01back door here the back door of my house
1:05:02yes and the note was stuck in the door
1:05:04and i read it and and essentially it
1:05:06said you know keep your mouth shut
1:05:08unless you want your family to get hurt
1:05:11and i really didn't think too much of it
1:05:13at the time because
1:05:14you know i've seen threats before it's
1:05:16no big deal
1:05:17but i turned it over to the florida
1:05:19department of law enforcement
1:05:21just in the event that anything did
1:05:22happen i wanted them to have it
1:05:23documented less than a month later on
1:05:26november 25th
1:05:28my wife had gone out to the post office
1:05:30in the store
1:05:31during the daylight hours i was like 10
1:05:34o'clock in the morning when she came
1:05:35home the house had been broken into the
1:05:38doors were ajar
1:05:39she went up to my office and all of the
1:05:41files on the wernost case on the the
1:05:44investigators and all the information i
1:05:46had had been trashed nothing else had
1:05:48been touched in the house this is the
1:05:50note that was pinned to brian jarvis's
1:05:52back door
1:05:53he suspects the burglary was connected
1:05:55with the warnos case most frustrated has
1:05:57been unable to prove who was responsible
1:05:59i have no way to prove who broke into my
1:06:01house i went to the hillsborough county
1:06:03sheriff's office i went to the florida
1:06:05department of law enforcement i had
1:06:07hoped that i could get a good
1:06:09investigation done instead the florida
1:06:12department of law enforcement initially
1:06:13accused the media of breaking into my
1:06:15house to create a story it was
1:06:16ridiculous they refused to acknowledge
1:06:18the fact that that there was something
1:06:20wrong here they had to check into and
1:06:21they refused to check into it uh
1:06:24after accusing the media they accused me
1:06:26of setting up the burglary totally
1:06:27ridiculous they wouldn't brian jarvis
1:06:30now works as a private investigator in
1:06:32tampa
1:06:33he resigned from the police force and i
1:06:35could see from that point on you know
1:06:37the state attorney's office wouldn't do
1:06:39anything in their investigation up in
1:06:41ocala fdle wouldn't do their job down
1:06:44here
1:06:45i wrote to the the fbi
1:06:47took four months to get a reply from
1:06:49them in the meantime
1:06:50we were
1:06:52literally awake for weeks at a time
1:06:54because we were afraid to go to sleep at
1:06:56night
1:06:57and it just really messed up our uh our
1:07:01whole lifestyle you know but just the
1:07:03thought that they take away
1:07:07the evidence confronting tyria moore she
1:07:10was in possession of property belonging
1:07:12to one of the murder victims
1:07:14yet she was never charged with anything
1:07:16she had been
1:07:19seen
1:07:20when we brought the composites around
1:07:23a person in a convenience store said i
1:07:25saw two people fitting those
1:07:26descriptions in here
1:07:28and the date and time she gave was the
1:07:30same date and time that we narrowed mr
1:07:32humphries down to being there because we
1:07:35had found a receipt in his car
1:07:36a statement was taken from her it was
1:07:38never followed up on she was never shown
1:07:40photographs of the girls she was never
1:07:43followed up on in any manner
1:07:46there is no evidence tyria moore was
1:07:48involved in the killings we talked to
1:07:51the clerk at the convenience store she
1:07:53remembered seeing tyria and lee together
1:07:55will refuse to give us an interview
1:08:03none of the witnesses attached the case
1:08:05would talk to us
1:08:06this man met tyria moore and lee wanos
1:08:09when they crashed a car in these woods
1:08:11belonging to peter sims one of the
1:08:13murder victims
1:08:18if y'all don't get in that van and get
1:08:20out of here i'm gonna cobble
1:08:22well we just wanted to ask about
1:08:24lee walnuts and tyrion more at the truck
1:08:26stop i don't want it i got nothing to
1:08:28say
1:08:29i don't know something happened with
1:08:30that car before or after or whatever
1:08:33i don't know
1:08:36because there was a guy called ray who
1:08:38fixed it right yes
1:08:41we tried to talk to him but he seemed
1:08:42very frightened

1:08:58it was tyria moore driving the victim's
1:09:01car when it crashed
1:09:03leewanos has never implicated tyria in
1:09:05the murders
1:09:06in tyria moore the mysterious tyria
1:09:10moore michael mccarthy is writing a book
1:09:12with brian jarvis the ex-policeman i
1:09:14believe the person that she
1:09:15as she perceived it loved for the first
1:09:18time in her whole life and was willing
1:09:20to do whatever
1:09:22under whatever circumstances to provide
1:09:24what she probably had for the first time
1:09:26was like a nuclear family she became a
1:09:28couple she was the husband quote unquote
1:09:31and tyria moore was the wife or at least
1:09:32that seems to be the setup
1:09:34out of that spirals a life of incredible
1:09:38resentment frustration and rage and who
1:09:41does she kill
1:09:42she kills her father over and over and
1:09:45over again
1:09:47the police say we don't know how many
1:09:48men she killed she kept killing the same
1:09:50guy
1:09:51we don't know what triggered it off but
1:09:52it wouldn't take a a a a a a
1:09:56a sigmund freud to try to figure out the
1:09:58relationship between her and her father
1:10:01and look at these middle-aged white men
1:10:04sort of business types
1:10:05who must have epitomized to her
1:10:07everything that she hated in this
1:10:08culture
1:10:12i'd also learned to my horror that
1:10:14arlene had written to lee saying that
1:10:16she didn't trust my eyes and lee should
1:10:18be very careful in dealing with us
1:10:20arlene herself hadn't visited lean now
1:10:22for over two months and had said in an
1:10:25unguarded moment that she wished she'd
1:10:27never heard of arlene warnos now i am
1:10:30asking very quietly turn the cameras off
1:10:33and leave you half your money i did not
1:10:36get anything and this is not true
1:10:38this has nothing to do with 1250 dollars

1:16:28they're both really pissing me off
1:16:30because i think their motive was just to
1:16:31make
1:16:32money okay and i just can't go any
1:16:35further than that

1:16:43how much did they have to do when you're
1:16:45changing your defense as well
1:16:48to do with you changing they did it they
1:16:51convinced me
1:16:54they convinced connived
1:16:57food to not contest your
1:17:00i'll give you an example and this is
1:17:02what's really pissing me off is um
1:17:05when
1:17:07they wanted me to
1:17:09plead no contest steve did
1:17:12and arlene arlene started it i think and
1:17:15steve just kind of fell in
1:17:17but arlene
1:17:20kept conniving me can i why don't you
1:17:22plead guilty you know don't go through
1:17:24all these trials i can't take it anymore
1:17:26all all these childs she couldn't take
1:17:28it yeah and um and you know your mother
1:17:31you're killing your new adopted mom now
1:17:33with these trials and stuff and if you
1:17:35don't go to the trials and the cops
1:17:37won't have anything for the movie and it
1:17:39and i yeah and i found out that it
1:17:41didn't matter because the day that i
1:17:43pleaded no contest to marion there was a
1:17:45big write-up in the front page about the
1:17:47cops doing their movie anyway
1:17:49so it didn't make a difference i already
1:17:51too late i already said it
1:17:53so why do you think
1:17:54i mean i know
1:17:56because they convinced me that the cops
1:18:00would not be able to do
1:18:02their movie and have any access to this
1:18:05movie because they needed the trials to
1:18:07go through but do why do you think
1:18:10arlene
1:18:11and steve would want you to plead guilty
1:18:14arlene and steve have both suggested how
1:18:16i could kill myself
1:18:19that's not very motherly is it
1:18:22well kill yourself
1:18:24while you're in the
1:18:26in this institution
1:18:28i mean they both suggested it
1:18:31it's not very
1:18:32motherly nor very lawyerly is it
1:18:36and even given me some
1:18:38ideas so that's pretty sick
1:18:43i know they're they're not on my side
1:18:45but it's too late now all i need to do
1:18:48is slide through the rest of these
1:18:49stupid trials pascal dixon
1:18:52dixie find me a real good detective and
1:18:55a real good investigative reporter to go
1:18:57out and figure out what's going on with
1:19:01find out that i'm telling the truth and
1:19:02they're lying
1:19:04and find the evidence
1:19:06and once you've got evidence i can get a
1:19:08new trial and i need to go to a new
1:19:10trial through the supreme court
1:19:13and what about before all this happened
1:19:16did you
1:19:17you mean before the crimes themselves
1:19:19yeah i was doing fine until tyra told me
1:19:22start going see strangers and make more
1:19:24money that's how i wound up in the
1:19:27situation but having been but you had
1:19:29been
1:19:30working as a prostitute for a while
1:19:32before then hadn't you i was doing real
1:19:34good monetarily yeah i was making hand
1:19:36over fist to money
1:19:38i was doing real good
1:19:40the only thing the only problem that
1:19:42happened is when saudi arabia came in
1:19:45my clients started going to desert storm
1:19:47and going to the bases and training and
1:19:49getting ready to go
1:19:50overseas and do that deal in kuwait
1:19:54and so i lost a lot of my regulars and
1:19:56tyra told me well why don't you go out
1:19:57there and do your strangers again like
1:19:59you did from the beginning when i
1:20:01started hooking and i thought you know i
1:20:03can deal with my strength my regulars i
1:20:05have now but i only make about 150 a
1:20:07week
1:20:08did you feel that tyra was into it
1:20:10but wanted me to bring in 700 or a
1:20:13thousand a week what did you feel tyra
1:20:15was into it for money as well
1:20:18well now i look at it yes definitely she
1:20:21was she was she was using me monetarily
1:20:23so it was my first lover before tyra
1:20:26i bought her pressure cleaning business
1:20:28and everything and she took off two
1:20:29months after i bought it for her and now
1:20:31steve and arlene as well
1:20:34everybody
1:20:36they must be the economy man why do you

1:20:38everybody seems like they just care
1:20:40about the money they don't care about me
1:20:42eileen horn has killed seven people she
1:20:44deserves to die who gives the darn let's

1:21:38look for the closest weapon in the
1:21:40vehicle and tried to use it on me to
1:21:42rape me
1:21:44two did
1:21:45five tried

1:22:40the same attorney also represented the
1:22:42interests of tyria moore in these
1:22:45discussions
1:22:46in their mind she's a serial killer
1:22:48we're going to even if she's innocent we
1:22:50don't care we're going to make the
1:22:51public believe she's serious but anyway
1:22:54that's what

1:22:56that
1:22:57even two things you're gonna have to do
1:22:58you're gonna have to get the public to
1:22:59believe that she's serial killer and
1:23:02you're gonna have to get her convicted
1:23:03in order to get this movie to go we're
1:23:05going to be in ocala

1:23:12the police
1:23:13their involvement
1:23:14in it

1:25:24the investigation being conducted by the
1:25:26florida department of law enforcement
1:25:28centers around tape telephone
1:25:30conversations
1:25:31made by deputy munster between he and
1:25:33major henry involving the eileen warnos
1:25:37case
1:25:38the florida department of law there's
1:25:40speculation that if it is found the
1:25:42officers did receive money
1:25:44all lee warnos's death sentences could
1:25:46be overturned
1:25:52the sheriff's office car
