- 0:02>> Sometimes shutting up is the best
- 0:04answer. And I say this with full irony,
- 0:07just ironically as someone who posts
- 0:09hours and hours of footage every week of
- 0:11herself yapping to no end. But sometimes
- 0:13yes, the answer is being quiet. The
- 0:15answer is no answer. The answer is in
- 0:17staying silent. It's probably the reason
- 0:20why so many defense attorneys spend a
- 0:22great deal of energy convincing their
- 0:24client of everything that they could
- 0:25mess up if they testify on the stand at
- 0:27their own trial. A lot of defense
- 0:30attorneys believe that how the person
- 0:32comes across to the jury is arguably way
- 0:35more important than what they actually
- 0:37testify to. Which is why more often than
- 0:39not, it's not worth it in most cases for
- 0:42clients to testify. [music]
- 0:43I mean, I guess it's just a thing humans
- 0:45do. You would think that no, when you're
- 0:47on the jury for a major case, you want
- 0:49to make sure that you're just listening
- 0:50to the judge. But once someone involved
- 0:53starts yapping, it becomes less about
- 0:55the facts and more about do I like this
- 0:57person? Do they seem trustworthy? I
- 0:59don't know if they do. In 17-year-old
- 1:02Mackenzie Shirilla's case, she does not
- 1:04testify. July 31st, 2022, 17-year-old
- 1:08Mackenzie crashes a car going nearly 100
- 1:10mph straight into a brick building. Her
- 1:13boyfriend Dom in the front passenger
- 1:14seat is killed. Their friend Davion in
- 1:16the back seat is killed. And the only
- 1:18survivor is Mackenzie. And she is now a
- 1:21convicted murder. She didn't testify
- 1:24during her murder trial. Although I will
- 1:26say it wasn't a jury trial. She opted
- 1:27for a bench trial, meaning it's the
- 1:28judge that's going to be determining if
- 1:30her testimony is trustworthy. But even
- 1:33after being convicted, Mackenzie and her
- 1:35parents do not believe she's a murder.
- 1:37They think that this is an accident. All
- 1:40three of them, Mackenzie and her
- 1:41parents, Natalie and Steve, they sit
- 1:43down with Netflix for the very viral
- 1:45documentary The Crash. They try to
- 1:47explain their side, and the reaction is
- 1:50probably not what they were hoping for.
- 1:52The reaction that they received to this
- 1:54whole thing of yapping on Netflix ranges
- 1:57anywhere from oh my god, I hate the dad.
- 2:00What's wrong with his shirt? All the way
- 2:02to people spreading rumors that they
- 2:03think Mackenzie and her dad have an
- 2:05inappropriate relationship that was
- 2:06happening in odd hours of the night.
- 2:08Steve Shirilla, the dad, even gets
- 2:10placed on leave from his job. He's an
- 2:12art teacher at a Catholic school because
- 2:14of the comments that he makes on the
- 2:17Netflix documentary. And one might think
- 2:20that it would probably be in everyone's
- 2:22best interest for Natalie and Steve to
- 2:25let things quiet down after this Netflix
- 2:27documentary goes live. After Steve loses
- 2:29his job because maybe just shut up for a
- 2:31second, right? But no, they do not. They
- 2:34want to keep quote clearing the air.
- 2:36They want to keep sharing their side of
- 2:38things and every time they open their
- 2:39mouths, it feels like they're just
- 2:41making it worse.
- 2:42Since the release of the Netflix
- 2:43documentary, Steve Shirilla has done a
- 2:45few sit-down interviews and it's just
- 2:49the point that he's trying to make
- 2:51doesn't feel like it's being made on a
- 2:53large scale. People just seem to hate
- 2:55him more. Steve passionately rants in a
- 2:58more recent interview, "There was no
- 3:00evidence to support the charges. There's
- 3:03not. There was not. The prosecution came
- 3:06up with that, she's a danger to society,
- 3:08blah, blah, blah, and there was no proof
- 3:10of that. You know, they said she has no
- 3:12remorse. They never spoke to her." Which
- 3:15I mean, I guess sure, but one could also
- 3:17argue that taking photos and videos
- 3:18getting high in her car likely driving,
- 3:20that's very dangerous to society
- 3:21considering she also just did kill
- 3:23people in a car crash. And as for the no
- 3:25remorse, she did go to a Kid Cudi
- 3:27concert in a wheelchair and dressed up
- 3:29for Halloween and went out in a ripped
- 3:31corset outfit with corpse-like makeup.
- 3:33So, I don't know if they necessarily
- 3:34have to talk to her to gather in their
- 3:37opinion that she has no remorse.
- 3:39But Chris Cuomo, who is the one
- 3:41interviewing Steve, tries to ask him
- 3:43about you know, I mean, maybe the no
- 3:45remorse part comes from all the DMs and
- 3:47like the social media posts. Like what
- 3:49what about that? Steve goes from being
- 3:52very loud, very aggressive, to a little
- 3:54bit softer. That was something that was
- 3:57involved prior. Cuz you remember she was
- 3:59like talking to the modeling agency?
- 4:01>> Mhm.
- 4:02>> It's like but that was something that
- 4:03was involved prior. Some of that is
- 4:05taken out of context, is blown out of
- 4:08proportion. What is she supposed to dig
- 4:10a hole and just hide in the hole for the
- 4:11rest of her life after this? Chris Cuomo
- 4:13fights back. Well, no, no, but it was
- 4:15right after. Well, what does that mean?
- 4:18What does that mean? So, now she's not
- 4:19allowed to live? She's lucky to be
- 4:21alive.
- 4:22She says Mackenzie still doesn't
- 4:23remember what happened in that [music]
- 4:25car crash. He says she does not
- 4:27remember. That has been her story from
- 4:29day one. There's no memory of it. And
- 4:31I'm telling you I know my daughter does
- 4:33not like pain. She would never ever hurt
- 4:35herself intentionally. I know my
- 4:37daughter. I've known that kid all her
- 4:38life. I know when my daughter lies. I
- 4:40just know my daughter.
- 4:42People don't really see that as a
- 4:44spectacular defense. He just seems to
- 4:45think it is. How can you know your
- 4:47daughter when he himself admits that he
- 4:49didn't know about the driving and
- 4:50smoking weed videos and photos? So, like
- 4:52how well do you really know your
- 4:53daughter?
- 4:54>> Mhm.
- 4:54>> As for what happened in the car, he
- 4:55says, "I'm not saying pot is the reason
- 4:58for it. I'm not saying the car had an
- 5:00issue. I'm not saying the boys did
- 5:02anything. I don't know. I have no idea
- 5:04what happened in that car. And if I
- 5:05don't have any idea, nobody does."
- 5:08>> Okay. I feel like we all have an idea
- 5:10why she turned out the way she did.
- 5:13>> But he doesn't.
- 5:14>> interview.
- 5:15>> And he says the analogy about how
- 5:17Mackenzie was found guilty. And he's
- 5:19saying this all after the fact. He's
- 5:21saying the analogy is the wife dies, the
- 5:23husband did it. That's it. That's the
- 5:26analogy that's going on here. There's no
- 5:27evidence of why it happened. There's no
- 5:29evidence of why. There will never be any
- 5:31evidence of why. And that's the point
- 5:33that needs to be taken here. The black
- 5:35box information is is about the car. I
- 5:37can't I can't explain the acceleration.
- 5:40I can't explain why the pedal was down.
- 5:42Could it have been the slipper stuck on
- 5:43the pedal?
- 5:44That they refuted. Could it have been
- 5:46the car? Uh yeah, it's just as likely as
- 5:49she did it on purpose and there's no
- 5:51evidence of purpose. And speeding is not
- 5:54a precursor to murder. It's not I'm
- 5:56sorry, it's recklessness, it's reckless.
- 5:58That's why it should have been vehicular
- 5:59homicide in juvenile court. He says, "If
- 6:02it's just the black box information that
- 6:04made his daughter guilty in the court of
- 6:06law, then quote, the black box
- 6:07information, then the car did this. The
- 6:10car did it. Put the car in jail."
- 6:12>> If they it's you got the car did this,
- 6:14the car did it, put the car in jail.
- 6:15>> We have no evidence of why. And you
- 6:17can't just say, "Well, the science says
- 6:20she was going fast, so that's intent."
- 6:22That is absolutely ass.
- 6:24>> There seems to be a very interesting
- 6:26explanation for just about everything
- 6:28that people have been pointing out on
- 6:29the internet. People are saying that
- 6:31Mckenzie was a bully in school. I mean,
- 6:32there are multiple school reports in the
- 6:34foyer requests that don't necessarily
- 6:36depict Mckenzie in a great light. One
- 6:38teacher literally told administration
- 6:40that she couldn't handle being verbally
- 6:42assaulted by Mckenzie anymore. And
- 6:44Steve's reaction is, "Well, I can't
- 6:46explain it. Look, was she an angel? No.
- 6:49Did she have a problem with authority?
- 6:51Sometimes. I believe when she felt she
- 6:54was being unjustly treated, she stuck up
- 6:56for herself. That's the simple fact."
- 6:58They say that the trial was unfair and
- 7:00they think that Mckenzie's lawyer did
- 7:01not represent her fairly and they at the
- 7:03time didn't know any better. Steve says,
- 7:06"You know, are we bad parents? No. Are
- 7:08we uninformed parents of a child that
- 7:11was on trial for murder? Yeah." As for
- 7:13his parenting and how Mckenzie grew up,
- 7:15he says, "There was not a problem with
- 7:16her until this accident." And how it got
- 7:18blown out of proportion and how
- 7:20everything now is so blown out of
- 7:21proportion. Steve starts rambling more
- 7:24or less about whether or not Dom's mom
- 7:26knew the judge and if they had any sort
- 7:27of working relationship, which I will
- 7:30say the judge and Dom's mom and Dom
- 7:32himself, they all share the same last
- 7:34name, Russo, but it's not a particularly
- 7:36unique last name and they are not
- 7:38related. But when Steve is asked whether
- 7:41or not he has proof that there's some
- 7:42sort of fix going on in court because he
- 7:45keeps alluding to some sort of fix that
- 7:47must have happened. Steve says, I have
- 7:49as much proof that it's a fix and that
- 7:51the judge is dirty or incompetent as
- 7:54they do that my daughter did this on
- 7:56purpose. All I have to do is say it. So
- 7:59it's true, right? That's what the
- 8:01prosecution did. Steve ultimately
- 8:04believes, quote, I'm sorry. No lawyer,
- 8:07no person is ever going to make me
- 8:09believe that my daughter did this on
- 8:10purpose.
- 8:11And that's probably like the only
- 8:13statement of his that I truly believe.
- 8:15>> What do you mean?
- 8:16>> No one's going to convince him that his
- 8:18daughter did this on purpose. But the
- 8:20two parts of his most recent interviews
- 8:22that have been going viral is there's
- 8:24this one part in the interview where
- 8:25he's talking to Chris Cuomo and he's
- 8:27just talking about how he thinks that
- 8:28the judge is biased and he's just
- 8:31throwing all these allegations out
- 8:33there. And there's this very light airy
- 8:35voice coming from the side cuz this is a
- 8:37video zoom recording, like a zoom
- 8:39interview. And it's like, I'm a boss
- 8:41baby that can dance like a man. I can
- 8:43shake and I'm fancy. I can shake my can.
- 8:46>> What the
- 8:47>> baby that can dance like a man. I can
- 8:49shake and I'm fancy. I can shake my can.
- 8:51>> Yes, that's all right.
- 8:52>> And it's like the most uncomfortable,
- 8:56weird, bizarre. Chris Cuomo looks stern
- 8:59and he asks, what is that? It's my
- 9:02phone. It's a phone ring. That's your
- 9:04ringtone? It's for a friend of mine. So
- 9:07the ringtone is from a show called
- 9:09Adventure Time. It's like a cartoon and
- 9:11it I mean, there's nothing nefarious
- 9:13about it, but it just adds to the
- 9:15weirdness of like I've seen a lot of
- 9:16memes online now where they just say the
- 9:18whole family jail. The whole family
- 9:20jail. They just don't get good vibes.
- 9:23>> Is it a children's thing or children's
- 9:25cartoon?
- 9:25>> an adult cartoon if I'm not mistaken.
- 9:28But I think the choice of that in a
- 9:29ringtone is very bizarre.
- 9:31>> Exactly.
- 9:32>> At that age.
- 9:33>> Yeah.
- 9:33>> This whole interview is probably the
- 9:35reason why defense attorneys, not that
- 9:37Steve needs a defense attorney, that's
- 9:39not what I'm saying, but a loose example
- 9:41of probably why defense attorneys don't
- 9:43necessarily think involved parties
- 9:45speaking for themselves is ever helpful
- 9:47in any situation. The whole interview is
- 9:49a dumpster fire. Steve starts running
- 9:51through hypotheticals. He's like, "What
- 9:53if we can prove that her POTS caused her
- 9:55to pass out and she seized and it caused
- 9:57the accident." Which like there's
- 9:59already so much wrong with that
- 10:00statement because typically when you
- 10:01pass out from POTS, typically it's not a
- 10:03seizure. You don't seize. You pass out,
- 10:05you go limp.
- 10:06>> Mhm.
- 10:06>> Chris Cuomo, who was an attorney before
- 10:08he is like a journalist, newscaster,
- 10:11right? But he quickly responds, "Then it
- 10:13would be an accident." "What if we can
- 10:15prove that either one boy or the other
- 10:17boy did something in the car that caused
- 10:18the accident? Then she would not have
- 10:20the intent and maybe not the act to
- 10:21trigger a charge." "What if we could
- 10:23prove the car malfunctioned? Then it was
- 10:25an accident and maybe there's a case
- 10:26against the manufacturer." It just seems
- 10:28like every single point Steve tries to
- 10:31make, nothing really comes of it. It
- 10:33just feels a lot like angry ranting.
- 10:36He'll say some crazy things like, "Just
- 10:38because you don't like my daughter
- 10:39doesn't mean she's guilty of murder.
- 10:41Just because you don't like what you see
- 10:43on the internet about my daughter
- 10:44doesn't mean it's murder. That's
- 10:47speculation. That is reckless
- 10:48speculation on anybody's part."
- 10:50>> Just because you don't like my daughter
- 10:52doesn't mean she's guilty of murder.
- 10:55>> And I tend to agree with that. Like
- 10:56technically the points he's making make
- 10:58sense. Just because you don't like
- 10:59somebody doesn't mean they're guilty of
- 11:00murder. But it's the fact that your
- 11:02daughter McKenzie is convicted of murder
- 11:04that makes her guilty of murder. She is
- 11:06guilty of murder. That is a statement of
- 11:08fact in the court of law. She has been
- 11:09found guilty. That is not speculation.
- 11:11That's not even reckless speculation.
- 11:13It's literally a matter of public
- 11:15record. Otherwise, you could have a
- 11:17field day suing everyone for defamation.
- 11:19Chris Cuomo goes to ask about McKenzie
- 11:22and Dom's volatile relationship. And I
- 11:24think this is the point in the interview
- 11:26where I realized there's no coming back
- 11:28for this person. Like there is nothing
- 11:30that he can say, I think, would convince
- 11:33me or maybe people who feel like me to
- 11:36even open their minds to the idea that
- 11:39Steve might be on to something because
- 11:41he's just so far off the pulse. There's
- 11:44this moment where Chris Cuomo brings up
- 11:46the relationship and Steve ducks his
- 11:48head and he starts laughing cuz Chris
- 11:50Cuomo categorizes Dom and McKenzie's
- 11:52relationship as volatile. Steve starts
- 11:55laughing. That's a lie. And I cut you
- 11:57off. Sorry. That is a lie.
- 11:59>> That's a lie.
- 12:00That's a lie. That's a lie. I'm going TO
- 12:01CUT YOU OFF. SORRY. I got to cut you
- 12:02off. That's a lie.
- 12:03>> That's a lie. Volatile is not the right
- 12:06word. That is harsh. These kids fought
- 12:08and they broke up and they got back
- 12:10together. That was their MO. They
- 12:11weren't fighting. This wasn't a volatile
- 12:13relationship. They were never going to
- 12:15break up. They were talking about
- 12:17getting married. They were talking about
- 12:19a life. They were buying furniture for
- 12:21that house. They were making a life for
- 12:23themselves. Period. That's it. They were
- 12:25not breaking up. And anyone who says
- 12:27that, sorry, that is untrue. That is a
- 12:29lie. And that is a narrative that the
- 12:31prosecution needed to go to put my
- 12:34daughter in a bad light to make it seem
- 12:35like she had a thing against this kid.
- 12:38He claims they absolutely were not going
- 12:41to break up. They did not have a
- 12:43volatile relationship. But is that
- 12:45really true? We went through the entire
- 12:47FOIA and there are never-ending fights
- 12:50[music] between McKenzie and Dom.
- 12:51McKenzie threatening to break open the
- 12:53front door to be let into his house,
- 12:54refusing to leave him alone, and a
- 12:56reoccurring fight between the two where
- 12:58Dom accuses her of engaging in sex work.
- 13:02Did Steve Shirilla know all of that and
- 13:04still categorizes their relationship as
- 13:06not volatile? Or does he genuinely think
- 13:09that that is not a volatile
- 13:10relationship? Or is he in denial? This
- 13:13is part three of the McKenzie Shirilla
- 13:15case.
- 13:22>> [music]
- 13:26[music]
- 13:37>> We would like to thank today's sponsors
- 13:38who have made it possible for Rotten
- 13:40Mango to support change the game for Dom
- 13:41Foundation and Davion Flanagan's
- 13:43Memorial Scholarship Fund. Both
- 13:45GoFundMe's are run by the families of
- 13:46the victims and we will include those
- 13:48plus all the information regarding Dom
- 13:49and Davion's Law, which aims to update
- 13:51Ohio's Son of Sam laws in order to
- 13:53prevent violent offenders from profiting
- 13:55off their crimes. All of those are going
- 13:56to be included in the show notes. This
- 13:58episode's partnerships have also made it
- 13:59possible to support Rotten Mango's team
- 14:01of dedicated researchers. We'd also like
- 14:02to thank you guys for your continued
- 14:04support. As always, full show notes are
- 14:06available at rottenmangopodcast.com.
- 14:08Today's case involves mentions of
- 14:09illicit drug usage, reckless driving,
- 14:11driving while intoxicated, self-exit,
- 14:13and possible domestic violence and sex
- 14:16work. We did pull the FOIA for this case
- 14:19and literally went through tens of
- 14:20thousands of pages of text messages,
- 14:22detective incident reports, autopsy
- 14:24reports, and more. So, naturally, quotes
- 14:26and statements may be condensed for
- 14:27brevity. Secondly, there is a list of
- 14:29discourse surrounding the case from
- 14:30loved ones involved all the way to
- 14:32unrelated netizen audiences. So, to in
- 14:35order to explain the entirety of the
- 14:37case, we're going to go over all of
- 14:39those, but just keep in mind throughout
- 14:41that any opinions, comments, or
- 14:42speculations made by netizens do not
- 14:44represent our own. And this is part
- 14:46three of a five-part series. In the
- 14:48first part, we went over the crash
- 14:50itself and generally what people
- 14:51believed happened that night. In part
- 14:53two, we broke down the Netflix
- 14:54documentary as well as we actually
- 14:56interviewed Rosie and Bubba, two of the
- 14:57more controversial individuals in the
- 14:59documentary. We asked them all the
- 15:01questions social media had. In this
- 15:02part, we're going to be breaking down
- 15:04all the relationships as well as
- 15:05covering internet rumors, conspiracy
- 15:07theories that people have about
- 15:08Mackenzie's relationship with her
- 15:09parents, and whether or not people
- 15:11believe they [music] played some sort of
- 15:13indirect role in all of this. In part
- 15:16four, and I might switch this with part
- 15:17five, but in part four, we'll probably
- 15:19be breaking down the entire 31,000 page
- 15:21document of text messages between
- 15:23McKenzie and Dom. And in part five,
- 15:25we're going to cover the jail calls, the
- 15:26alleged prison girlfriends, the trial,
- 15:28and the appeal, and where we're at. So,
- 15:30with that being said, let's get started.
- 15:33I've watched a lot of documentaries
- 15:34where police will talk about how they're
- 15:36tasked with death notifications for
- 15:38loved ones, and they always describe it
- 15:40in a very similar, yet very specific
- 15:42way. That the family members let out
- 15:44what sounds like a guttural scream. Some
- 15:47people have even described it as almost
- 15:48sounding animalistic. It's not just this
- 15:50like, "Oh, I'm so scared. Oh, I'm so
- 15:52shocked I let out a scream." They say it
- 15:54feels primal. It's almost like the
- 15:56scream is being ripped out of them.
- 15:57Steve Shirilla says in an interview,
- 15:59[music] "If you would have heard her."
- 16:01He's talking about his daughter. So,
- 16:02he's saying, "When we told McKenzie that
- 16:04Dom, her boyfriend, is dead, quote, 'If
- 16:06you would have heard her when she found
- 16:08out that Dom died, if you would have
- 16:10heard the sound that came out of her, it
- 16:12would have crushed you.'"
- 16:13>> When she found out that Dom died, if you
- 16:15would have heard the sound that came out
- 16:16of her, it would have crushed you.
- 16:17>> Natalie describes how McKenzie found
- 16:19out. You know, she says, "In the night,
- 16:21McKenzie says, 'Where's Dom?'" And this
- 16:23is when they're in the hospital. "I had
- 16:24to tell her, I had to tell her that it
- 16:25was him, that he didn't make it. And so,
- 16:27she screamed, and I said, 'I'm so
- 16:29sorry.' She goes, 'No, it's not him.
- 16:31It's not him. Please go check. Go
- 16:32check.' And I said, 'McKenzie, it's him,
- 16:34because if it wasn't him, he'd be
- 16:36here.'" Steve says, "That was
- 16:39devastating to hear her. The sound, I
- 16:40mean, it was gut-wrenching." Natalie
- 16:42says right after, she was asking, "Well,
- 16:44what about Davion? Is he okay?" And I
- 16:46had to say, "No, he didn't make it,
- 16:47either." And she was like, "Oh God." I
- 16:49just thought that this was such an
- 16:51unfortunate interview. I get that
- 16:53McKenzie was dating Dom and was friends
- 16:54with Davion. So, I'm not discounting
- 16:56that this didn't happen. Like, I'm
- 16:58saying, this probably did happen, or
- 17:00that these emotions were not genuine.
- 17:02But when her parents describe her
- 17:03finding out, it's not really
- 17:05sympathy-inducing. Because, yes, she can
- 17:07be upset and be sad, but ultimately,
- 17:10she's the one that caused their deaths.
- 17:12So, it's like you can have this
- 17:13experience, but maybe like don't share
- 17:15it with the the And I didn't even want
- 17:17to show this footage, but I've seen it
- 17:18circulating now, and every time I watch
- 17:20it, I think about how Mackenzie's
- 17:21parents were describing her reaction,
- 17:23and it's just unfortunate. Because this
- 17:25footage, we finally hear what the police
- 17:27in the documentaries are talking about
- 17:29when they talk about doing these death
- 17:30notifications and how they're the most
- 17:32painful thing to do. When Dom's mom is
- 17:34told that Dom didn't make it, there are
- 17:37two cops, so they go to her house, and
- 17:39they have to inform her.
- 17:41>> There was an incident uh that we believe
- 17:43Dominic may be involved.
- 17:45>> What?
- 17:45>> Is is
- 17:47Do you When was the last time you saw
- 17:48him?
- 17:49>> Last night.
- 17:50>> Last night?
- 17:51>> Yeah, everybody was home. Why?
- 17:52>> Okay.
- 17:53>> What happened?
- 17:53>> There's two cops that are squatting down
- 17:55on their knees next to her. She's
- 17:56sitting outside on this chair on her
- 17:58front porch, and they're sitting down
- 18:00next to her, and they're just telling
- 18:01her, "Just stay seated, please. Take
- 18:03your time. Take a deep breath." And
- 18:05she's screaming, and they have to try to
- 18:06calm her down, and she keeps screaming,
- 18:08"Oh my god, no, he can't be. He can't
- 18:10be. What did she do?"
- 18:12>> Both Davion
- 18:13and Dominic are deceased.
- 18:15>> Oh my god!
- 18:15>> Please, please, please.
- 18:16>> Oh my god!
- 18:18>> Sit down.
- 18:19>> Oh my god!
- 18:19>> No, no, no, PLEASE SIT DOWN. PLEASE SIT
- 18:20DOWN.
- 18:21>> OH MY GOD!
- 18:23>> [screaming]
- 18:24>> CHRIS IS GOING TO COME OUTSIDE.
- 18:28THAT'S OKAY. CHRISTINE, CHRISTINE.
- 18:30>> YES, just take a deep breath. It's okay.
- 18:35>> Oh my god!
- 18:35>> No, no, no, just breathe, everything's
- 18:37>> The scream, it's almost like she doesn't
- 18:39really know entirely what to do with her
- 18:41body as she's screaming. She almost
- 18:44reflexively jumps out of the chair, but
- 18:47she doesn't necessarily have anywhere to
- 18:49go. It almost feels like as a mom, maybe
- 18:51she's trying to go help, go do
- 18:53something, save her child, but there's
- 18:55nowhere to go. There's no [music] one to
- 18:57be saved right now. I think I was just
- 18:59getting very upset because I kept
- 19:01remembering what Mackenzie's parents
- 19:03were saying about her when she found out
- 19:04about Dom's death, and I was like crying
- 19:06when I was watching Dom's mom's death
- 19:09notification body cam footage that was
- 19:11in the FOIA
- 19:12It's just like eventually when they
- 19:14think that she's calm enough, they go
- 19:15inside her house with her, the police
- 19:17do. But she's just she's like pacing
- 19:19around her living room screaming, "It
- 19:22can't be true. It can't be true." It's
- 19:23like she can't sit still, but she also
- 19:26she's like in shock, she's in denial. It
- 19:28seems like there are multiple points
- 19:30throughout that the officers they either
- 19:32seem like either they know they need to
- 19:33let her go through these emotions or
- 19:35they almost like don't know what to say
- 19:37to bring her any comfort. But Dom's mom
- 19:39starts asking, "What happened in the
- 19:40car? What happened in the car? I didn't
- 19:42want her driving anyway. I don't like
- 19:44her driving. Oh my god. And that
- 19:46other kid, I don't even know him. I
- 19:48don't even know him."
- 19:50>> God and that other kid, I don't even
- 19:52know him.
- 19:53>> So she's talking about Davion and it
- 19:55seems like she's getting hit with the
- 19:56impact that not only is her son gone,
- 19:58but another life like another child is
- 20:00gone. [music] Because later she's
- 20:01outside and she's crying, "Oh, that
- 20:03other little kid. He's younger, I think.
- 20:05That little kid, it can't be."
- 20:08>> Oh, that other little kid. He's younger,
- 20:10I think. That little kid.
- 20:12>> She asked the police, "Why couldn't they
- 20:13save him?" The officers have nothing to
- 20:15say. They can't even respond.
- 20:17>> [music]
- 20:17>> She explains, "I was making buffalo
- 20:19chicken dip. They said that they had
- 20:20some party to go to and they were going
- 20:22to [music] be back to eat the dip. I was
- 20:23making the dip." Dom's mom will later
- 20:25tell the judge that when she found out
- 20:27that Dom and Davion were gone, she
- 20:29[music] says, "I called McKenzie's
- 20:31mother hysterical with the loss of my
- 20:33son and Davion. I knew McKenzie was in
- 20:35the hospital and the first [music]
- 20:36statement, Natalie, McKenzie's mom, said
- 20:39to me was, 'Oh, please don't listen to
- 20:41what everyone's saying on Facebook.'"
- 20:43Yeah, my son is dead. His friend is dead
- 20:46and I'm checking on yours, but social
- 20:48media is what's important? Social media
- 20:50after the crash in Strongsville, Ohio
- 20:52has been a literal hellhole. People who
- 20:54know McKenzie are posting things about
- 20:56her, against her, in support of her, and
- 20:58a lot of the posts are just questionable
- 20:59and weird at best. For example, one of
- 21:01McKenzie's friends decides that she's
- 21:03going to post McKenzie on Snapchat. And
- 21:05it is a picture of McKenzie in the
- 21:07driver seat of her car holding a giant
- 21:09blunt. I mean, it doesn't look like
- 21:10she's in motion, but she's in the driver
- 21:12seat holding a giant blunt. This is an
- 21:14absolutely completely sane picture to
- 21:17choose considering the circumstances,
- 21:19okay? And this friend writes in the
- 21:20caption, "Happy birthday Kenzie
- 21:22Shirilla. You're in everyone's thoughts
- 21:24and prayers, beautiful girl. Nobody
- 21:26involved deserved this whatsoever. And
- 21:28to the people talking down on her as if
- 21:30any of you haven't said some you
- 21:31probably shouldn't have. Respectfully,
- 21:33right off." Just because y'all had
- 21:36beef don't give you the right to speak
- 21:37about her when she's fighting for her
- 21:38life right now. She was the sweetest to
- 21:41the people she cared about and loved,
- 21:42always greeting everyone with a smile
- 21:44and a hello. I'll never forget chopping
- 21:46it up with you in gym class hitting our
- 21:47pens. Happy birthday, gorgeous. You're
- 21:50going to get through this." Which I'm
- 21:51not saying that you can't form a real
- 21:52friendship over a smoking weed together
- 21:54in gym class, but like that's your
- 21:55fondest memory of McKenzie and you're
- 21:57ready to defend her with such a picture
- 21:59and such a passion. It's so odd to me.
- 22:00Meanwhile, McKenzie is DMing Rosie, the
- 22:03friend that we interviewed for the last
- 22:05episode. This is after the crash. This
- 22:07is like a few days after the crash. Did
- 22:09you get the new Skims? I got this cute
- 22:11>> Skims?
- 22:11>> Yeah, Skims. Like the
- 22:13>> The dress?
- 22:13>> Like the loungewear. I got this cute
- 22:16set, soft lounge. Rosie responds, "Oh my
- 22:18god, no. I need to order more. I need
- 22:20the leggings. Show me when you can, the
- 22:21new ones." This is 20 days after the
- 22:24crash. McKenzie is just saying, "I got
- 22:26it in pink, too. Literally, we need to
- 22:27become the Skims duo." What is
- 22:29happening?
- 22:30>> Crazy.
- 22:30>> What is happening? The police even agree
- 22:32with Dom's mom because Dom's mom is
- 22:33later telling the police like, "When I
- 22:35first called Natalie, she's talking
- 22:36about Facebook and I wanted to punch her
- 22:38in the face." The police agree. And one
- 22:40officer tells her, "You know, we went
- 22:41there to the hospital and her biggest
- 22:43concern was what the people are posting
- 22:45on the Strongsville page on Facebook and
- 22:47can we intervene?" And that was her
- 22:49biggest concern when we walked in.
- 22:51>> First thing that she said to me when I
- 22:52called I was hysterical after finding
- 22:54out and she says, "Oh, are you calling
- 22:56about Facebook?" If I could have punched
- 22:58her and chucked
- 22:59>> We went there and her biggest concern
- 23:01was what people are posting on the
- 23:03Strongsville page and can we intervene
- 23:05and that was her biggest concern.
- 23:07>> Even in the first hospital visit, one of
- 23:08the officer notes in his report, quote,
- 23:11"Natalie expressed concern about the
- 23:12public's reaction on social media.
- 23:14McKenzie was barely able to speak. She
- 23:16asked to see photos of her vehicle. I
- 23:17told her once she's discharged, we can
- 23:19arrange for her to see them." Then a few
- 23:21days later, Natalie calls the detective
- 23:23again reporting a couple of girls for
- 23:24saying, quote, "mean things to her
- 23:26daughter on social media." Although
- 23:27Natalie said her daughter was no longer
- 23:29on social media, she states that there
- 23:30are two girls bullying McKenzie. The
- 23:32report reads, "The second girl, whom she
- 23:34only identified as Jenna, reportedly
- 23:36blamed McKenzie for killing Dom on
- 23:37purpose." Natalie said McKenzie had
- 23:39screenshots of the messages. I asked her
- 23:41to email them to me and I would look
- 23:42into it. I further explained to Natalie
- 23:44that unless the speech was threatening
- 23:46in nature, I will not be able to control
- 23:48what people say about the events.
- 23:49Natalie never emailed me the
- 23:51screenshots. Even later when police are
- 23:53giving McKenzie her phone back, the
- 23:54officers are just saying like they're
- 23:55still investigating. To which Steve, the
- 23:58dad, butts in, "What are people coming
- 24:00in and saying?" He's asking like what
- 24:01are people reporting to you? The cops
- 24:03naturally tell him, "I cannot tell you
- 24:05that. That's the investigation." To
- 24:07which Natalie, I don't know who made her
- 24:08the police chief, she says, "Well, it
- 24:10doesn't matter if it has nothing to do
- 24:11with the crash." The officer explains,
- 24:13"Well, we don't know. We have to put
- 24:15everything together." And I can see why
- 24:17people think that all Natalie and Steve
- 24:19care about are what people are saying
- 24:20about their daughter rather than what
- 24:22she did that caused those two boys to
- 24:23lose their lives. Another report from
- 24:25the hospital record reads, "Patient
- 24:27continues statements of depression and
- 24:29quote, 'Why did this happen to me?' Mom
- 24:31and Dad both acknowledge her feelings
- 24:33and assist with making patient feel
- 24:34better." And it just feels like it takes
- 24:37a very special person to be talking
- 24:39about Skims 20 days after a fatal crash
- 24:41where two people died and you were the
- 24:42driver, but still wonder why why did
- 24:45this happen to me? It's all so weird.
- 24:47Like how do you even get to that point?
- 24:49A lot of people think it's the parents.
- 24:51And I have seen people online and maybe
- 24:54it's based off looks or maybe it's based
- 24:55off the fact that two of them have
- 24:57really viral Netflix documentaries where
- 24:59they're both interviewed or the fact
- 25:00that they're both moms, who knows? But,
- 25:02a lot of people have been I've seen
- 25:04compare Natalie to Kendra. Remember the
- 25:06mom who was texting and bullying her own
- 25:08daughter for years and then Yeah, to
- 25:10Kendra. That Kendra was comforting her
- 25:13daughter while also being the one that
- 25:14was anonymously cyber harassing her.
- 25:17Kendra, that Kendra. Some netizens point
- 25:19out that both Kendra and Natalie have
- 25:21this very weird feeling that they give
- 25:23people where it just feels like they
- 25:25want to be friends with their daughters.
- 25:26They don't want to be moms, they want to
- 25:27be in high school and they want to be
- 25:29friends with all the friends.
- 25:30>> But, Kendra once was basically bullying
- 25:33the daughter the whole time.
- 25:34>> Yes.
- 25:35>> Natalie Shurella was more what?
- 25:37>> Enabling.
- 25:38>> Uh-huh. So, why what's the similarity
- 25:40exactly?
- 25:41>> I think the similarity lies in the fact
- 25:42that they both want to be their
- 25:43daughter's friends. Like, they both want
- 25:45to be in that age group. Not necessarily
- 25:47friends. Like, I know, you know, Kendra
- 25:49is bullying her daughter, so it may not
- 25:50seem like she wants to be friends with
- 25:51her daughter, but more so they're stuck
- 25:53in like this arrested development phase
- 25:56where they all act like high schoolers.
- 25:59So, instead of disciplining their
- 26:00daughter and being like, "No, you're not
- 26:02allowed to do that." They act like a
- 26:03high schooler themselves is what people
- 26:05are kind of connecting the dots. These
- 26:07are opinions online. These are not
- 26:09facts, it's just opinions. And it's the
- 26:11energy, I suppose. For example, there's
- 26:13this one incident where
- 26:15even when Okay, this is from the body
- 26:17cam and I don't know, maybe I'm being
- 26:18petty, maybe I'm being like hyper
- 26:20judgmental, but the officers inform
- 26:22Natalie and Steve Shurella that most
- 26:24likely I'm going to be on her past.
- 26:26They're in the hospital. So, McKenzie's
- 26:27being operated on and it is without a
- 26:29doubt an incredibly traumatic situation
- 26:31for them in their own perspectives. But,
- 26:34Natalie is asking for the officers that
- 26:36she might need a puke bucket. And this
- 26:38is like such a niche experience like
- 26:40that I'm connecting to this, okay? The
- 26:42officer goes to fetch one for her. And
- 26:44like the way she asked for a puke bucket
- 26:45almost seems casual. Like, she's like,
- 26:47"Oh my god, I'm going to throw up." It's
- 26:48not like, "No, I'm genuinely going to
- 26:49throw up."
- 26:50>> Puke bucket for you?
- 26:51You want a puke bucket? We can get you
- 26:53one.
- 26:59>> [clears throat]
- 27:00>> Where is my wife?
- 27:01>> So the officer is like, do you need a
- 27:02puke bucket? She confirms she needs a
- 27:04puke bucket. Officer goes to fetch one
- 27:07for her and says something along the
- 27:08lines of like, well you're in the best
- 27:10place to have one. AKA, you're in a
- 27:11hospital, we got a lot of puke buckets.
- 27:14She responds, that was a good joke.
- 27:16>> You're in the best place to have one.
- 27:18Thanks.
- 27:19That was a good joke.
- 27:21>> Okay. Do we need to like do we need to
- 27:23throw up well or do we need to convince
- 27:24the nurse to quit her job and pursue
- 27:25stand up? Like I just thought it was
- 27:27odd, right? But then she, in my personal
- 27:30humble opinion, and this might be like
- 27:31hyper judgmental because I have a lot of
- 27:33experience throwing up. Okay, I am
- 27:35someone who is super prone to nausea.
- 27:38Everything makes me nauseous. I have
- 27:40Zofran on the go at all times. She's not
- 27:42really sitting like someone who's about
- 27:44to throw up. She's sitting with her legs
- 27:47crossed in the chair and she's leaning
- 27:50back.
- 27:50>> When I have to throw up, I've met
- 27:52someone who's about to throw up. They're
- 27:53always forward and they have a puke
- 27:56bucket or some sort of container ready
- 27:57to go just in case or they're kind of
- 27:59hunched because when you extend your
- 28:01stomach, it always makes the nausea
- 28:03worse. That's why people go into like a
- 28:04fetal position when they're throwing up
- 28:06all night from drinking or whatever it
- 28:08may be, right? And she's leaning back.
- 28:10She hasn't even touched the puke bucket.
- 28:12She just places it on the chair next to
- 28:14her.
- 28:14>> So she doesn't look like she's about to
- 28:15throw up.
- 28:16>> Yeah, and like none of this really means
- 28:18anything, but I just thought it was
- 28:20weird because you're in a highly tense
- 28:22emotional situation. The last thing I
- 28:24would do is like go through this whole
- 28:26dramatic back and forth with multiple
- 28:28parties of getting a puke bucket if I
- 28:30genuinely was not on the verge of
- 28:32throwing up. It just feels like a really
- 28:34weird intricate song and dance involving
- 28:37multiple parties of grabbing this puke
- 28:39bucket and doing a lot when you are in
- 28:42this heightened emotional state. Like if
- 28:43I were in this situation, I just could
- 28:45not foresee myself asking for any sort
- 28:48of puke canister, bucket, bag unless I
- 28:51was literally on the verge of throwing
- 28:53up on the floors. And even then, I think
- 28:55I would try to hold it in until I could
- 28:57no longer. None of this, again, means
- 28:59anything, but I guess it's the whole
- 29:00energy that Natalie gives off is a
- 29:02little bit strange. And maybe I am being
- 29:03harsh. I just thought it was a little
- 29:05dramatic. She also Natalie does this
- 29:07thing where she makes custom balaclavas
- 29:09that McKenzie will wear. So, like the
- 29:11kind of they look like rave balaclavas.
- 29:13Like you you know with the bunny ears,
- 29:15like a ski mask with the face cut off,
- 29:17and then with the bunny ears, and then
- 29:18you wear them with like bikinis to the
- 29:20raves.
- 29:21>> Okay. She hand makes them?
- 29:22>> Yeah, she I guess she hand makes them,
- 29:24and McKenzie will wear them, and
- 29:26sometimes I guess she sells them cuz I
- 29:28see a lot of Instagram DMs where she's
- 29:29trying to sell them. And McKenzie will
- 29:31tell people like, "My mom custom makes
- 29:33them. Her at is this. You can DM her,
- 29:35and I think she's only going to charge
- 29:37you $20, but if you live far, she'll
- 29:38have to add $5 shipping, but it
- 29:40shouldn't take long, probably a week."
- 29:41And again, I don't have children. But if
- 29:43my 17-year-old daughter were posting
- 29:45these types of videos wearing the
- 29:46balaclavas that I made, and wearing
- 29:47these types of clothes, and filming
- 29:49herself smoking weed, I feel like I
- 29:50would have to ground her for half a
- 29:51century. It's just like not hard to feel
- 29:54that McKenzie's priorities are all
- 29:55screwed up, and it feels like maybe even
- 29:57Natalie's are. Even when the officers
- 29:59are giving McKenzie her phone back,
- 30:01Natalie, the mom, clarifies with the
- 30:03officers. And this is in the hospital,
- 30:04and this is in the hospital report, the
- 30:06officer report. "You had search
- 30:07activity, you downloaded the date,
- 30:09everything, you know, now nobody's
- 30:10looking at it."
- 30:11>> You wouldn't be able to explain what we
- 30:12>> So, Natalie is asking the officer, like,
- 30:14"You got the search activity, you
- 30:15downloaded the date, like everything,
- 30:17now nobody's looking at it. Like, no
- 30:18one's going to look at her stuff. Like,
- 30:20her phone is private now."
- 30:21>> Uh-huh.
- 30:22>> And the officer is like, "We mirrored
- 30:23the phone, we're going to look through
- 30:24the phone." Right, but everything she
- 30:25does now, now she's on her own. So,
- 30:28they're like, "Yeah, now she's on her
- 30:29own. Like, we're not going to we don't
- 30:30have like a tracker on her phone. We're
- 30:32not watching in real time what she's
- 30:34doing on her phone." And it's just
- 30:36interesting that Natalie is so gung-ho
- 30:37about that. Later she asks again, "So,
- 30:40this, you know, this one does have total
- 30:42privacy again. Yeah, total privacy. From
- 30:44here on out, everything we're going to
- 30:46look at we have already obtained through
- 30:48a search warrants for, you know,
- 30:49everything including social media. And
- 30:51while they go over the copy of the
- 30:52search warrants, Mackenzie asks [music]
- 30:54the officer, "Are people going through
- 30:55my Snapchats, too? Like opening stuff?"
- 30:57Cuz she's got her phone back for [music]
- 30:58the first time in the hospital.
- 31:00>> Mhm.
- 31:00>> Uh we did not. We just mirrored your
- 31:02phone. So they're like, "We didn't go
- 31:03through your Snapchat, but like we
- 31:04mirrored your phone." Because I see like
- 31:06three of them open. The officer
- 31:08clarifies with Mackenzie, "We did not,
- 31:10but either way, even if we did, we have
- 31:12a search warrant. We're going to look
- 31:13through everything that's on your phone.
- 31:15So like maybe we didn't now, but we are
- 31:17going to." I'm not entirely sure why
- 31:19that's her biggest concern right now,
- 31:20but if she must know, we did receive
- 31:22four massive folders just containing her
- 31:24Snapchat data extracts, so
- 31:26>> Crazy.
- 31:26>> Yeah, they did go through your Snapchat,
- 31:28and so did we. We FOIA'd this case, and
- 31:31the Snapchat files the police gave us
- 31:32were extensive and ridiculously out of
- 31:35context. I'm just taking you on the
- 31:36journey that we went on in the multiple
- 31:39zip files of Snapchat evidence. We kept
- 31:41seeing, okay, like obviously we saw
- 31:43messages and like we saw her posting
- 31:45like random things on Snapchat, but we
- 31:47also saw there would be like random
- 31:48things out of context and we're just
- 31:50trying to like contextually piece it
- 31:51together. We see so many pictures of
- 31:53Mackenzie with a white wall behind her,
- 31:55almost like a passport photo. Like, why
- 31:57she Snapchating passport photos? It's so
- 31:59weird. Just variations of poses.
- 32:01Sometimes it's slightly pouty, less
- 32:03pouty, hair back, hair in front, one
- 32:05side of hair in front, one side of hair
- 32:07in back. I'm like, okay, is she getting
- 32:08a passport? And I don't know why we're
- 32:11like, we need to get to the bottom of
- 32:12this. We were like literally sitting
- 32:13around the dining table and I'm like,
- 32:14"Okay, team, we got to get to the bottom
- 32:16of this." No no reason, okay? But we
- 32:18just needed to know. We needed to see it
- 32:19through. And we think, based off the
- 32:21context clues, those are the photos that
- 32:23she's sending to fake ID websites to try
- 32:25and buy a fake ID online from.
- 32:27>> she just like screenshotted that right
- 32:29before, right?
- 32:30>> Yeah, so it's like fakeid.com, like
- 32:32something as ridiculous. It's the most
- 32:34fake fake ID website name that you could
- 32:36think of, and she has screenshots of her
- 32:38applying for fake IDs on those websites.
- 32:41She also screenshots pictures of her
- 32:42phone, of her like weird search history.
- 32:46Can you see a person's age using a debit
- 32:48card? Then she screenshots the answer
- 32:50from Quora, which reads, "None. In Nope,
- 32:53in the states there is nothing on your
- 32:54debit card to indicate your age. Your
- 32:56card lists your bank name, your name,
- 32:58and card's expiration date, and your
- 32:59debit card number tied to your bank
- 33:00account. That's it." She seemingly
- 33:02documents her search for the best senior
- 33:03quote of all time. She starts searching
- 33:05on Pinterest. The 100 most epic and
- 33:08funny senior quotes, Planet of Success.
- 33:10She clicks on that one. One of them
- 33:11reads, "See kids, I told you your mom
- 33:13was hot back in high school." Another
- 33:15reads, "I have to be successful because
- 33:17I like expensive things." Ultimately,
- 33:20and like you would have to tell me if
- 33:21you can confirm, if you have this
- 33:23yearbook, it seems she settles on this
- 33:26poetic masterpiece. "You can't get what
- 33:28you always want, but I certainly can." I
- 33:31don't know how that's
- 33:32>> What's that?
- 33:32>> Yeah. It's like the weirdest quote.
- 33:35Yeah. She also complains to her friends
- 33:37about Dom on Snapchat via audio notes
- 33:39that I think she thought disappears
- 33:41forever into the ether, goes into the
- 33:43intergalactic space, but like we have
- 33:45them. She sends this to a friend, "No,
- 33:47like he gets me flowers and stuff like
- 33:49that. I don't know though, but I have to
- 33:50be like, if you don't do this I'm
- 33:52breaking up with you. If you don't make
- 33:53it up to me we're done. Like you have
- 33:55until 6:00 today or we're done type
- 33:56Like that's like how it is. So it
- 33:59makes it like not special. He can never
- 34:01just like apologize on his own, make it
- 34:02up to me on his own."
- 34:03>> And I have to kind of like give him that
- 34:05like little Actually, no, a giant ass
- 34:07push. Like I have to shove him
- 34:08off a 60-foot diving
- 34:10board type
- 34:11>> Another audio message where McKenzie
- 34:13says, "I have told him a million times
- 34:15that I will be the perfect girlfriend."
- 34:16>> "Perfect girlfriend. I will clean. I
- 34:18will literally clean his house in a
- 34:19maid costume. All he has to do
- 34:21is be good and get me what I want and be
- 34:23good to me."
- 34:24>> That's how it is. He can't do that. Like
- 34:26it's a really not that hard to please
- 34:28me. Then another one.
- 34:29>> "Guys are pee brains. Like real
- 34:31they do not think big at all.
- 34:33>> She complains quite a bit. She also
- 34:35whines to another friend. So, she got
- 34:37into this modeling school and like by
- 34:38got in, her parents paid for it. Okay,
- 34:41that's pretty much it. She says, "Today
- 34:43was the worst class I have
- 34:44literally ever been in my whole goddamn
- 34:47life. Like I'm honestly starting to feel
- 34:49like this shit's a scam. Like I paid
- 34:51$4,000. I mean, my family did for me to
- 34:54go to this modeling school. I thought I
- 34:55would get placed immediately. But like
- 34:58dude, this shit's taking so long and
- 35:01we're like doing repetitive It
- 35:03just feels like cosmetology school all
- 35:05over again. Like I don't even know. They
- 35:07treat us like children, too.
- 35:09Like I don't even know how to
- 35:10describe this to you. I hate it.
- 35:13Every second of it. And this is going to
- 35:15sound even worse. I don't even know
- 35:17>> I don't even know like the fact that
- 35:19like some of those people even made it
- 35:20in. It's like it's shocking. It's
- 35:23shocking. Like y'all ugly as hell. Like
- 35:25how the are y'all in here? Like we
- 35:27need the supermodel looking
- 35:28Like there's like five girls who are hot
- 35:30in that class. Like and the rest are
- 35:31weird as
- 35:33>> Also, in her Snapchat folders, you know,
- 35:35she's filling out this medical exam and
- 35:37it asks her like most do, "Do you
- 35:39currently smoke or vape? Yes or no?" And
- 35:41there's a little box next to yes, little
- 35:43box next to no. Okay? She of course
- 35:46indicates yes, but instead of doing a
- 35:48check mark or an X or filling in the
- 35:50box, she does a heart around yes. And
- 35:53then takes a picture and sends it to
- 35:55somebody on Snapchat. I don't know
- 35:56because now we have it in the Snapchat
- 35:58file. So, yeah. McKenzie, the police
- 36:00went through your Snapchat history and
- 36:02so did we. So, kind of a dumb question
- 36:04to ask whether or not the police opened
- 36:07her Snapchat. But on the note of dumb
- 36:09questions, later at McKenzie asks the
- 36:11officers if they were all wearing body
- 36:13cameras. Which side note, this is before
- 36:16her arrest. So, it's possible that she
- 36:18thinks that they're just investigating
- 36:19and the case is going to be concluded
- 36:21with her getting her license suspended
- 36:22for like 10 years, which is what she
- 36:24asked them to do, right? But she asks if
- 36:26they're wearing body cams. They confirm.
- 36:28She asks to see them. They tell her no.
- 36:30>> When was this? When was she asking?
- 36:32>> She's in the hospital.
- 36:33>> Oh.
- 36:33>> So, this is like after the crash.
- 36:34>> And the police is currently wearing a
- 36:36body cam. This is being recorded.
- 36:38>> they were audio recording a lot of these
- 36:40hospital Yeah, they were not I didn't
- 36:43get the body cam probably cuz HIPAA and
- 36:44like there's lots of stuff happening in
- 36:46the Actually, well, I do see a lot of
- 36:47body cams in hospitals. Maybe cuz she's
- 36:49on Well,
- 36:50>> Yeah.
- 36:51>> But we only got audio, you're saying?
- 36:52Okay.
- 36:52>> Yes. Mhm. And so, she's acting like this
- 36:54is just like a friendly hee-hee ha-ha
- 36:56girly pop chat. And she's like, "Why
- 36:58can't I see it?" Like, what do you mean
- 37:00why can't you see it? This is an open
- 37:02investigation. Like, they're not just
- 37:03going to give you What do you mean?
- 37:06>> She's like, "My mom would give it to me.
- 37:07Like, that would would have given it to
- 37:08me."
- 37:09>> Like, 10 years ago.
- 37:09>> You can get what you want, but I
- 37:11certainly can't.
- 37:12>> [laughter]
- 37:12>> Exactly. What the hell is going on right
- 37:15now? It's just all very deplorable
- 37:17behavior. And I don't know if Natalie
- 37:19and Steve ever called their daughter out
- 37:21on it or if all they do is sympathize.
- 37:23Natalie, as per her very recent Daily
- 37:25Mail interview. So, Steve's been doing
- 37:27like I've seen at least two on-camera
- 37:29interviews. Natalie has a Daily Mail
- 37:32interview. She says, "I'm always going
- 37:34to be a villain in someone's story
- 37:35because I'm the mom of someone driving a
- 37:37car who killed two kids. That's okay
- 37:39because I know I'm not a villain. I'm a
- 37:41good person. [music] So is my daughter.
- 37:43She's not how she's being labeled
- 37:45online. She struggles with this daily.
- 37:47She's being labeled online as a murderer
- 37:48and she was convicted of murder. So, I
- 37:51don't know. She says, quote, "I feel
- 37:52trapped. I feel like we're stuck in
- 37:54quicksand and we can't get out. I feel
- 37:56so bad for McKenzie, but at the same
- 37:58time I feel so bad for the other
- 37:59families. I love Dom. I still love Dom.
- 38:02McKenzie still loves Dom. She's
- 38:03struggling. Dom was like part of our
- 38:05family." Steve says in the documentary,
- 38:07"She's lucky to be alive, but I was
- 38:09torn. I had some guilt being happy for
- 38:11my daughter and knowing that [music] Dom
- 38:12and Davion passed."
- 38:14I think what you wear to a very
- 38:16important event is very indicative of
- 38:18who you may be as a person. I mean,
- 38:19typically, you don't wear white to
- 38:21someone else's wedding unless asked to.
- 38:23And if you do, it's very indicative of
- 38:25who you are as a person. And maybe
- 38:27sometimes you don't wear a graphic
- 38:29t-shirt that says boom on there when
- 38:31you're being interviewed about how your
- 38:33daughter crashed a car into a building
- 38:35at nearly 100 miles per hour to the
- 38:37point where investigators say it looked
- 38:38like the car exploded. And ultimately,
- 38:41that car crash killed two boys. Maybe
- 38:43don't wear the boom shirt.
- 38:45>> Was this in Netflix or
- 38:47>> Yes, Netflix.
- 38:48>> That's even crazier.
- 38:49>> Yeah.
- 38:49>> It's freaking you know, this is a
- 38:51documentary. People like wardrobe is a
- 38:53huge thing.
- 38:54>> And like the emphasis that they have on
- 38:55lighting. Like if you see some of these
- 38:57like setups for these documentaries
- 38:59behind the scenes, the amount of lights
- 39:01it's like 10% room, 90% lights and
- 39:04camera crew studio. Like it's just so
- 39:06intense.
- 39:07>> yeah, to the T.
- 39:08>> Yeah. And I'm sure they don't have like
- 39:10a makeup team for, you know, documentary
- 39:12interviewees, but like it's still a big
- 39:14day on the calendar that you think of
- 39:16and you plan ahead of time and you're
- 39:18like, okay, well, I need to wear
- 39:19something that is Yeah, but no, he wears
- 39:21a boom shirt. It's a shirt that reads
- 39:23boom on there. It looks like a graphic
- 39:25tee and he's wearing this throughout the
- 39:26Netflix documentary. And netizens have
- 39:28thoughts ranging anywhere from it's just
- 39:30a shirt to he's an art teacher. He's
- 39:33trained in media literacy. He did this
- 39:35on purpose and it's wild.
- 39:37>> Mhm.
- 39:37>> Another one reads, it feels like he's
- 39:39making a joke about his daughter's
- 39:40actions. Maybe I'm reading into it, but
- 39:42it's not a good look. Another says,
- 39:44their level of immaturity in that family
- 39:45runs deep. Another says, zero
- 39:47situational awareness whatsoever. To
- 39:50which later Steve does an interview
- 39:52where he's asked about this boom shirt.
- 39:54But not before he very sarcastically
- 39:56points out. So, in this new interview
- 39:58after Netflix, he's wearing this solid
- 40:00orange polo shirt. So, it's got the polo
- 40:01logo, but like just mainly orange,
- 40:04right? He says, is this okay? I I don't
- 40:06want to trigger anybody in this world
- 40:07and I'm wearing this orange polo. I hope
- 40:09it's you know, I'm not color blind
- 40:11enough for anybody. Oh, the shirt I was
- 40:13wearing is from DripDrop. So, the boom
- 40:15shirt. He's like, it's from this
- 40:16drip-drop, which is Crime Circus on
- 40:19YouTube." Crime Circus has been a
- 40:21defender for my daughter. He's been made
- 40:23many posts saying she's innocent, and he
- 40:25shows the evidence, and he contradicts
- 40:27what people say.
- 40:28>> there is a YouTuber defending
- 40:30>> Yeah.
- 40:30>> McKenzie Shirilla?
- 40:31>> Like way before the Netflix documentary,
- 40:33like during the trial, as it was
- 40:34happening, I believe.
- 40:35>> And this is their merch?
- 40:37>> It's one of their merch. I mean, people
- 40:39have been saying he's got tons of merch
- 40:41you could have chosen from.
- 40:42>> merch was related to this case?
- 40:45>> Okay.
- 40:45>> Unrelated to this case.
- 40:46>> Still crazy.
- 40:47>> Yeah. And yeah, yeah. He's like, you
- 40:50know, he shows the evidence, he
- 40:51contradicts people that who say, "No,
- 40:54she's guilty, blah, blah, blah." And he
- 40:55goes, "No, you have to look at this and
- 40:57this." About a month after her trial,
- 40:58one of his posts showed up with us.
- 41:00Somebody had sent it to us, and he had
- 41:02found five, six videos, interviews from
- 41:04the Strongsville Police Department that
- 41:05were not in discovery or were not in the
- 41:07discovery that we could find. And he
- 41:08says that in those videos, people allude
- 41:11to McKenzie passing out and having
- 41:12seizures. So, it's like [music] it's a
- 41:14very lengthy police discussion with
- 41:17Angela, which is Dom's brother, and he
- 41:19like alludes like, "Yeah, I've heard
- 41:20about McKenzie passing out and having
- 41:22seizures, right?" Or whatever. But he's
- 41:24saying like, "Oh, that's proof."
- 41:26Regardless, I don't really think it's
- 41:29that pertinent because the verdict did
- 41:31come out the way it did come out. He's
- 41:33saying that he didn't get it in
- 41:34discovery, which I mean, if that's true,
- 41:37that's a huge, huge allegation, and I
- 41:41would imagine that their appeal would go
- 41:43forward, but it hasn't so far. I mean,
- 41:46they're going to the Supreme Court, but
- 41:47it's just a huge allegation that I I
- 41:49don't know because I don't know what
- 41:50they got in discovery, right? When I I
- 41:52mean, I got it when we did the FOIA
- 41:54request. I didn't particularly find
- 41:57anything in there nefarious. Like, you
- 41:59know, the points where I was talking
- 42:00about in the last episode where Dom's
- 42:01mom was saying, "Oh, I'm not even
- 42:02worried about McKenzie's attorney. He's
- 42:04not a concern for me." They kind of took
- 42:06it as, "Oh, everything is rigged." I
- 42:09took it more as like, she found out who
- 42:11the Shirillas hired. I don't think she's
- 42:13the one that told them to hire them. And
- 42:14then she's like, "I don't think he's a
- 42:16great attorney." I think that was the
- 42:17vibe I got.
- 42:18>> Yeah.
- 42:18>> Of like, he's not like this crazy, he's
- 42:20not Mark Agnifilo, probably.
- 42:23Anyway, back to the shirt. He said the
- 42:24shirt was Crime Circus's logo and one of
- 42:26his swag that he sells. So, I wore the
- 42:28shirt to say thank you for what he was
- 42:30doing for my daughter and he's done a
- 42:31lot. If I see him, I'm going to hug him.
- 42:33That's the first thing I'm going to do.
- 42:34He's been a very good champion for what
- 42:36I feel is misjustice against my daughter
- 42:38and the lack of evidence to support the
- 42:39charges. So, that's what the shirt was
- 42:41about. Not me being color blind to two
- 42:43boys dying because it was horrible. A
- 42:46day doesn't go by that I don't think
- 42:47about it. And that was one of the
- 42:49toughest things for me to do with this
- 42:50whole thing. At the beginning was, how
- 42:52can I be happy that my daughter's alive
- 42:54and breathing and the fact that these
- 42:55two boys died. The shirt was a thank you
- 42:57to Crime Circus. It wasn't me being
- 42:59color blind or insensitive to anybody
- 43:00because that's the most idiotic because,
- 43:02oh my god, why would I do that? That's
- 43:04got to be the dumbest take on that
- 43:05shirt. And again,
- 43:06>> But you did.
- 43:07>> Yeah.
- 43:08>> You did wear that.
- 43:09>> Yeah. And then
- 43:10>> Apologize.
- 43:10>> Yeah.
- 43:11>> You can still explain, but just
- 43:12apologize.
- 43:13>> That was his apology. And then he hits
- 43:15it with a, you know, and again,
- 43:16everyone, this is orange. I'm sorry if
- 43:19it's offensive. I apologize now.
- 43:21>> And again,
- 43:22everyone, it's orange. I'm sorry if it
- 43:24if it's offensive. I apologize now.
- 43:26>> They're just so not likable. They're
- 43:28making everything not regarding to the
- 43:30case or legal side of it. They're just
- 43:32such unlikable people.
- 43:34>> Yeah. They're people that I would not
- 43:35want to spend any second of my free time
- 43:37with
- 43:38willingly. In another comment, it reads,
- 43:40"He's the type of dad that joins his
- 43:42daughter's OnlyFans account for quote
- 43:43support." That [music] comment got like
- 43:4648,000 likes. So, this is a sentiment
- 43:49that, I mean, I don't know, you describe
- 43:50a lot, but that to me is a lot of people
- 43:52that liked it. McKenzie's dad, Steve
- 43:54Sherrill, says, "Again, am I a perfect
- 43:56parent?" No. And Natalie is like backing
- 43:59him up and she's like, "Nobody is. No
- 44:01one is. Have I made mistakes with my
- 44:02kids? Sure. It's It's like life, you
- 44:05know?" McKenzie's mom, Natalie Butson,
- 44:07"But she wasn't a bad kid. She didn't
- 44:09need to be disciplined a lot. You know,
- 44:11I mean, she I mean, the only the worst
- 44:13is her mouth. And clearly, our
- 44:15definitions of good parenting and bad
- 44:16kid are so vastly different that one of
- 44:18us might be reading the dictionary and
- 44:19the other party might be reading the
- 44:21freaking Hobbit. Because like, what do
- 44:22you mean? In the police FOIA file, we
- 44:24received this lengthy document. It's the
- 44:26cell byte extract of text messages
- 44:28between McKenzie and her dad. And I will
- 44:30say, the internet has taken some
- 44:32snippets of it and ran with it to very
- 44:34interesting directions and corners of
- 44:37darkness. For example, there's the whole
- 44:39warm milk bit online. I guess people
- 44:42have been pulling messages and McKenzie
- 44:44seems to ask her dad for quote warm milk
- 44:46at odd hours of the day or more often
- 44:49odd hours of the night. And there are
- 44:51some notable ones. So for example, I
- 44:53mean, I was combing through looking for
- 44:54these warm milk messages because I saw
- 44:56people talking about it online before I
- 44:57even got to it. January 4th, 2020,
- 45:00McKenzie texts her dad at 2:43 a.m.
- 45:03Middle of the night. Can you make me
- 45:04warm milk?
- 45:06He doesn't respond until 1:00 p.m. the
- 45:07next day. [music] Sorry, just seeing
- 45:09this. You still want milk?
- 45:11Then 2 days later at 11:31 p.m.,
- 45:14McKenzie texts her dad again. Can you
- 45:16make me warm milk? He responds, okay.
- 45:19Thanks. When you come in, be quiet. Then
- 45:21later in March 2020, McKenzie texts her
- 45:23dad at 11:35 p.m. Can you rub my feet?
- 45:26This seems to like be a thing that she
- 45:28does because months later there are
- 45:29similar messages. Could you please come
- 45:32up here and rub my feet? They're in pain
- 45:34and mom will not do a good job. Can you
- 45:35rub my feet?
- 45:37Which is interesting.
- 45:38April 2nd, 2020, 11:12 p.m., McKenzie
- 45:41asks again, will you make me warm milk?
- 45:44He responds the next morning at 10:00
- 45:45a.m. Just saw this, do you still want?
- 45:47[music]
- 45:47No.
- 45:48Sorry, my phone was dead. Then May 5th,
- 45:502020 at midnight, can you make me warm
- 45:53milk? Again, May 8th, 2020 at 3:00 a.m.,
- 45:56can you make me warm milk? To which
- 45:58Steve responds, K.
- 46:00McKenzie asks, can you do it now?
- 46:02Then again, May 9th, 2020, [music] "Can
- 46:04you make me milk?"
- 46:06And I don't know if it's maybe a lot of
- 46:08people who don't really drink a lot of
- 46:10warm milk, or maybe just like a vibe
- 46:12that people are picking up, but comments
- 46:13on TikTok read, "Warm milk is not warm
- 46:15milk." That comment has almost 30,000
- 46:18likes. People are debating under that
- 46:20comment section, you know, arguing what
- 46:21they think warm milk means. Some say,
- 46:24"Warm milk helps you come off certain
- 46:25drugs." So, like, it is warm milk, but
- 46:28the reason she needs it so much is
- 46:30because she's trying to come down from a
- 46:31drug. Others say, "No, it sounds like a
- 46:34sexual thing." Another comment just
- 46:36reads, "Google Urban Dictionary meaning
- 46:38for warm milk." Which I did, and there
- 46:40is a list of different definitions
- 46:42ranging from the beverage you drink
- 46:43while thinking of excuses to explain why
- 46:45you can't fish because your wife or
- 46:47others won't let you. Basically, you're
- 46:49a bit baby. All the way to it's a web
- 46:51comic, and all the way to, quote, "Wank.
- 46:54Jerk off furiously during a bout of
- 46:57insomnia as a way to work up the heart
- 46:59rate and therefore exhaust oneself to
- 47:01sleep." So, there are some people on the
- 47:02internet who believe that they think
- 47:05something weird is going on between
- 47:06McKenzie and her dad, with one comment
- 47:08reading, "This feels like a grossly
- 47:10inappropriate relationship." Others
- 47:12don't think it's that dark necessarily.
- 47:14They theorize online, "Warm milk helps
- 47:16you come down from very specific
- 47:18substances. Just an FYI, sounds like she
- 47:21was a junkie and her dad was an enabler.
- 47:23So, still probably bad."
- 47:24>> Did she ask for anything else?
- 47:27>> Oh, yeah. I'm going to get into that.
- 47:28Now, one comment with over 40,000 likes
- 47:31reads, "Child of addicts here. I was
- 47:33always told warm milk helps you come
- 47:34down from drugs."
- 47:36>> Huh.
- 47:36>> So, there is no proof that something
- 47:37strange is happening like some netizens
- 47:39theorize, because I kept seeing, I don't
- 47:41know if it was my algorithm, but TikTok
- 47:42was just like, "Something weird's going
- 47:44on between her and her dad." But then
- 47:46I'm reading the messages, and I honestly
- 47:48would say that, this is my feeling, I
- 47:50wouldn't be surprised if McKenzie is
- 47:52literally just asking for warm milk,
- 47:53like a literal glass of warm milk. And
- 47:56maybe it's weird to some people because
- 47:57I wouldn't wake my dad up at 3:00 in the
- 47:59morning to ask for a favor, but that
- 48:01sounds just about exactly what Mackenzie
- 48:03would do. But like I said, I don't know
- 48:06if I would be surprised if she's just I
- 48:08wouldn't be surprised at anything at
- 48:09this point. But I could see her just
- 48:11using him as a butler. She asks him to
- 48:13make her hot cocoa, bring her tanning
- 48:15oil, buy her spray paint, make her
- 48:17stencils out of cardboard. She also
- 48:18asked him to edit her photos, texting
- 48:20him, "Did you fix the pic? I need you to
- 48:23fix it ASAP. I'm trying to post."
- 48:26>> That's crazy.
- 48:26>> Yeah, she
- 48:27>> Like Photoshop?
- 48:28>> Yeah, she sends more pictures and she's
- 48:29like, "Make those lighter." She asked
- 48:31him to make her pants, and again, more
- 48:34milk. She'll text him at night around
- 48:3511:00 p.m. "Milk? Question mark?
- 48:38Question mark?"
- 48:39He doesn't respond. "Okay or not." Then
- 48:42more messages, "Will you make me warm
- 48:44milk, please?" No response. Mackenzie
- 48:46texts back, "Are you home? Can you
- 48:48please try to book me a massage sooner
- 48:49than 7:00? I have a birthday party that
- 48:51I have to leave for at like 6:00. Mom is
- 48:53telling me to book it. When first of
- 48:54all, I never even talk to adults, and I
- 48:56don't have no money, and I don't drive."
- 48:58Yeah.
- 49:00Then later messages show Mackenzie
- 49:02complaining about said warm milk, and
- 49:04she says, "Milk is cold AF. I'm going to
- 49:06drink it, but it's not warm."
- 49:08Steve responds, "Bring it down." It's
- 49:10just interesting. I can't imagine
- 49:11critiquing my parents about how they
- 49:13warm up milk. I wouldn't even give a
- 49:14Michelin star chef those notes if I'm
- 49:16paying for an expensive cup of milk.
- 49:18It's just a like a lot. It's very harsh.
- 49:20But that's apparently her dynamic with
- 49:22her parents. One DM between Natalie and
- 49:24Mackenzie, Natalie says, "Are you good
- 49:26with the D, or do you want to complete
- 49:28those final assignments?" If my mom ever
- 49:31came up to me as a minor and said, "Are
- 49:33you good with getting a D in this class,
- 49:35or are you going to finish those
- 49:36assignments?" Guess what that means.
- 49:39That means I'm finishing those
- 49:41assignments tonight, even if I'm falling
- 49:43asleep at my desk, because that was her
- 49:45way of saying, "You're finishing those
- 49:48assignments, okay?"
- 49:50She's asking her about her grades.
- 49:51Mackenzie responds, "Dude, I don't care
- 49:53about a D."
- 49:54>> Wait, what what is happening? So, the
- 49:56mom is asking if she would like to
- 49:58finish assignment?
- 50:00>> so she's saying
- 50:01>> asking? Like, "Hey, are you going to uh
- 50:03finish that?"
- 50:03>> Yeah, but like I guess I'm thinking like
- 50:05if my mom
- 50:06>> like, "Are you okay with a D?" Like
- 50:08that's the question?
- 50:09>> I guess so, but like
- 50:10>> Are you good with that?
- 50:11>> Usually when parents ask that, it's more
- 50:13so you're going to finish the
- 50:14assignments, right? But then she
- 50:16responds, "Dude, I don't care about a
- 50:18D." And now this is where I'm expecting
- 50:20Natalie to like mom and be like, "Hey,
- 50:22you might not care, but guess who cares?
- 50:24The car you're never going to drive, the
- 50:27outside world that you're never going to
- 50:28see because you're going to be
- 50:29grounded." Like something like that. I'm
- 50:30expecting. Natalie responds, "Unless you
- 50:32want to fix it. That's what I thought. A
- 50:34D is passing, so it's all good. LOL."
- 50:37>> That is insane response.
- 50:39>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:40>> Insane.
- 50:41>> I was reading that and I was like, am am
- 50:43I reading the right person? And I'm
- 50:44like, "No, this is Natalie Schrollus'
- 50:46Instagram DMing her."
- 50:49>> And they're Instagram DMing? Yeah.
- 50:51>> [sighs]
- 50:52>> Holy, this is crazy.
- 50:55>> I feel like Natalie just tries really
- 50:56hard to be McKenzie's friend. McKenzie
- 50:58will even tell Natalie about her night
- 51:00out with friends. She'll say things
- 51:01like, quote, "They knew my ID was fake.
- 51:03They told me. We did leave and then we
- 51:05went to Grace's." Natalie responds, "I'm
- 51:07glad you went out and had a good time."
- 51:09>> Holy, this is
- 51:12>> I feel like okay, I understand that when
- 51:15you're raising kids, maybe there comes a
- 51:17point where you know that your kids not
- 51:19out maybe or you know that your kid did
- 51:22something, but like maybe you don't
- 51:24confront them. Because maybe you let it
- 51:25pass for like whatever parenting reason
- 51:27you decide, okay? But the fact that the
- 51:29kid is telling you and then you're like,
- 51:31"Well, I'm glad you had fun." is like
- 51:33not in a world that I can imagine.
- 51:35>> No, this is like they flipped the
- 51:37parenting dynamic around. It's almost
- 51:39like McKenzie is the parent.
- 51:42>> This is so weird to me.
- 51:43>> is going on here?
- 51:44>> That's what I'm saying. Her parents seem
- 51:46much much, much, much, much less strict
- 51:49than my parents ever were and I feel
- 51:51like my parents were pretty open-minded
- 51:53raising us. Like it's just I feel like
- 51:55my parents are stricter on me now as a
- 51:57full-blown adult than McKenzie's parents
- 51:59were at her age at 17.
- 52:01>> Yeah.
- 52:02>> In one text thread, McKenzie is texting
- 52:04Dom.
- 52:04>> 15 if she was 2020.
- 52:07>> yeah.
- 52:08I feel like my parents expect more from
- 52:10me now as a full-blown adult.
- 52:12>> Yeah, yeah.
- 52:12>> And so there's another point where
- 52:14McKenzie is texting Dom about alcohol
- 52:16and she says, "How are we going to get
- 52:18alcohol? My dad said make it with
- 52:20vodka." So she's like getting advice
- 52:22from her dad and Dom is like, "Just ask
- 52:24your mom to go buy some." Later McKenzie
- 52:26says, "Okay, well, I'm waiting for my
- 52:27dad so give me the money so we can go
- 52:29and I'll get the Jell-O and everything.
- 52:30You can help me make the margaritas for
- 52:32the pre-game."
- 52:34Okay, I mean, the implication there is
- 52:36like I don't know, you draw the
- 52:37implication you want, right? But Dom
- 52:39sends a list of things that he needs and
- 52:41there's Casamigos silver on there which
- 52:43is alcohol. McKenzie later confirms that
- 52:46her dad got the orange liquor which is
- 52:48alcohol and when they get back, I guess
- 52:50the party is being hosted at McKenzie's
- 52:52parents' house and she says, "Well, my
- 52:54dad is power washing the deck for us."
- 52:56What I'm getting out of this is is he
- 52:58buying them alcohol and also cleaning up
- 53:01for their party
- 53:02>> Yeah.
- 53:02>> that they're hosting at their house?
- 53:03Like is that what we are to assume from
- 53:05this cuz that's crazy. Later in other
- 53:07messages, McKenzie mentions to Dom that
- 53:09she's going to go to the dispensary with
- 53:11her dad. McKenzie texts Dom, this is
- 53:13back in February of 2020, "My dad asked
- 53:15if I know someone who has hella female
- 53:17weed seeds. I'll pay you, should give
- 53:20him some."
- 53:21>> That is insane. So there not only he the
- 53:25parents not only buying
- 53:26her alcohol, he's buying her weed at 15.
- 53:30>> Well, I don't know if he's buying it for
- 53:31her or for himself, right? Or McKenzie
- 53:34could be making this up, right? But
- 53:35there's text messages between her and
- 53:37her dad where McKenzie asks her dad,
- 53:39Steve, "You want weed peanut butter?" He
- 53:42responds, "No, lol. I don't like to eat
- 53:44my weed."
- 53:46I'm going to give you a little. Are you
- 53:47making me milk?
- 53:49Dad, Dad, are you home?
- 53:51Then a, are you okay?
- 53:53Yes, I'm okay. I feel like I have a
- 53:55cold. Okay, to be honest, you need weed.
- 53:57I'm worried. Lol, don't be worried. I
- 54:00actually feel good. Just got irritated
- 54:02that I got it and have to quarantine for
- 54:0310 days. They're talking about COVID.
- 54:05Yeah, that's gay as. COVID some BS. You
- 54:09shouldn't have taken the test.
- 54:11>> You shouldn't have taken the COVID test?
- 54:12>> Yes, so there's This is like a
- 54:13reoccurring trend throughout McKenzie's
- 54:15text messages with other people. She
- 54:17talks about how she can buy negative
- 54:18tests, like tests that show a negative,
- 54:21instead of taking that.
- 54:23>> Wait, I'm still lost.
- 54:24>> So like cuz you know there was like
- 54:25mandatory quarantining.
- 54:27>> Oh, so as long as you show negative, you
- 54:29can just be out and about.
- 54:30>> Yeah. Yes.
- 54:31>> With COVID.
- 54:32>> Yes, so she's like She was like
- 54:33messaging other people of like how to
- 54:34get negative tests.
- 54:36>> Wow.
- 54:37>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Steve later says
- 54:39in an interview that he picked his
- 54:41battles as a parent and he let McKenzie
- 54:43smoke weed.
- 54:44>> I'm sorry if I find marijuana not that
- 54:46dangerous as I find alcohol or cocaine
- 54:50or whatever, you know, I My daughter,
- 54:53beyond whatever else seems to think or
- 54:56wants to interpret or glean, she seemed
- 54:58mature enough to handle it.
- 55:01>> I didn't see it as an issue. I feel like
- 55:03they have a lot of issues, but that's my
- 55:05opinion. According to text messages, it
- 55:07seems at some point McKenzie's dad puts
- 55:09like a bumper sticker on her I imagine,
- 55:12and this is like imagination. It's
- 55:15probably some sort of like student
- 55:17driver bumper sticker cuz she recently
- 55:19learned how to drive, right? And she
- 55:21texts him, "Never put that on my
- 55:23car again. Now I'm going to be late to
- 55:25school because I had to turn around and
- 55:26go take that off." He responds,
- 55:28"Lol." "It's seriously not funny. Like I
- 55:31will seriously flip the out. Don't
- 55:33talk to me like that. Lol. I'm going to
- 55:35talk to you however I want that bumper
- 55:37sticker stops showing up on my car. No,
- 55:40lol. Because now I'm late somewhere that
- 55:42my hours matter. Okay, then call Polaris
- 55:44and get my hours back. Blocked.
- 55:47>> Wait, what just happened?
- 55:48>> So, she's saying like call my school and
- 55:50get my hours back cuz she's like I'm
- 55:52late for school now because of you and I
- 55:54can't get my hours back. Don't put that
- 55:56bumper sticker on my car. And then she
- 55:58says blocked as in like she's going to
- 55:59block him, but she doesn't.
- 56:01Thanks for the laugh, lol. Giggle.
- 56:03>> The father says yes for the laugh.
- 56:05>> I just can't imagine talking to my dad
- 56:07like that. And then I can't imagine my
- 56:08dad responding to me like that when I do
- 56:10talk to him like that. Their
- 56:11interactions are alarming. Mackenzie
- 56:13will text her dad in the midst of a
- 56:15fight with her mom. Tell mom to answer
- 56:17my text right now. Right now. Do it.
- 56:19Question mark exclamation exclamation
- 56:21exclamation exclamation. Are you just
- 56:23not going to help?
- 56:24Sorry, not getting involved. I'm just
- 56:26going to get mad.
- 56:28Thanks for making this the worst
- 56:29birthday I ever had.
- 56:31She texts her dad, "Never drive my car
- 56:33again without putting gas in it. Like
- 56:35what the How are you going to
- 56:36drive someone's car then not put a
- 56:38single set of gas in it? And then it's
- 56:40literally below the line. It was not
- 56:41below the line when I gave you my car."
- 56:43Steve responds, "First, I took your car
- 56:46to get serviced, which I paid for and
- 56:48had to waste an hour of my time waiting
- 56:49for it and cleaned some of the inside
- 56:51because the person that drives it is a
- 56:52slob and doesn't keep it clean. Then
- 56:55when I returned your car to the
- 56:56driveway, I noticed the gas was on empty
- 56:57so I left you a note, told you when you
- 56:59came home and told your mother to tell
- 57:01you. So, be more respectful and
- 57:03responsible. You owe me $74 for the
- 57:05service and $25 for the hour I had to
- 57:07sit there wasting my time for my
- 57:08disrespectful daughter."
- 57:10Here's the thing with Steve and this is
- 57:12just like my context that I got from the
- 57:14text messages. Okay, when I watched the
- 57:16Netflix documentary, I walked away with
- 57:18the feeling that Steve and Natalie never
- 57:21yell at their daughter and just go, "Oh,
- 57:22baby, baby, it's okay. It's okay, baby.
- 57:24Anything for you, baby, right?" That's
- 57:26what I walked away with. But then when I
- 57:27was reading these text messages, I
- 57:29noticed that Steve does yell at his
- 57:32daughter and I think that's where he
- 57:33thinks he's disciplining his daughter.
- 57:36Right? But then like it never really
- 57:38amounts
- 57:39>> takeaway, though.
- 57:40>> Yes, I know.
- 57:41>> texts.
- 57:41>> Exactly. But that's not what happens
- 57:43because I'll see him like yelling at his
- 57:45daughter, right? And then the next day
- 57:47it'll be like, "Have fun. Have fun
- 57:49tonight. Like text me if you need me."
- 57:51And it's like, "Oh, if my child ever
- 57:53spoke to me like that, I don't think
- 57:54they're going out the next day."
- 57:55>> Yeah.
- 57:55>> I don't think they're going out for a
- 57:56long time.
- 57:57>> you just said
- 57:58>> Yes.
- 57:58>> the Steve just texts her. What does she
- 58:01respond with?
- 58:01>> Like nothing. She just ignores him.
- 58:03>> Clearly, there's nothing going on.
- 58:05There's no discipline. There's nothing.
- 58:06No consequences.
- 58:07>> Nothing.
- 58:08>> Nothing is being done.
- 58:09>> Yeah.
- 58:10>> What the
- 58:10>> Yeah.
- 58:12A few weeks later, she complains to him,
- 58:14"You should probably retake your driving
- 58:16test if you can't tell that you
- 58:17literally hit the bench with my
- 58:19car. #worstdriver #retakeyourtesttoday."
- 58:22"You mean the car I had to move because
- 58:24the person who parked it failed to leave
- 58:26me room, and don't you mean the car that
- 58:27I paid for? Is that the car you're
- 58:29talking about? Watch how you speak to me
- 58:31or you won't have that car."
- 58:33She responds, "Learn how to drive. #ass
- 58:36worst driver of the year."
- 58:38She doesn't apologize, but later she
- 58:40gets upset when a school project doesn't
- 58:42end up working out. She demands to her
- 58:44dad, "You better fix what you ruined or
- 58:45I will fail Polaris school."
- 58:48"So, dot dot dot. Are you trying to say
- 58:50you're slow?"
- 58:51"I'm saying when you speak to me with
- 58:52disrespect, I don't care if you fail."
- 58:55McKenzie responds, "Let me know when
- 58:56it's fixed. {question mark} Do you know
- 58:59how to use a music doll?" No response.
- 59:02"Good to know to never ask you to do
- 59:04anything again. You just up my
- 59:05whole morning. How about you tell people
- 59:07your plan instead of just not
- 59:09going."
- 59:10>> They literally text like two friends.
- 59:12>> Yes, that's what I'm saying. I don't
- 59:13even talk to my friends like that.
- 59:14>> Yeah. Is there any moment that they are
- 59:17acting like a parent that's actually a
- 59:20regular freaking parent?
- 59:21>> No, I mean the only moments I saw are
- 59:23when he's like, "You do not speak to me
- 59:25with disrespect." Right? Those are the
- 59:26>> That's again
- 59:27>> But like nothing comes of it.
- 59:28>> Exactly. Even a friend could talk to a
- 59:29friend like that. You don't talk to me
- 59:31like that.
- 59:31>> Yeah. But that's it. That's all I can
- 59:33find.
- 59:34>> Wow, these are
- 59:35>> Yeah, no, I was actually like I felt
- 59:37like my blood pressure was going up
- 59:39reading these text messages. I was
- 59:41kidding. Like I was huffing and puffing.
- 59:42It was so stressful. Then a few days
- 59:44later she text him, "Can you please go
- 59:46get us White Claws or some shit?" White
- 59:48Claws are alcohol.
- 59:49"Can you please go get us White Claws or
- 59:51some at the gas station or Mike's,
- 59:53something like that? I am in bed. I have
- 59:55to get up early and it's Sunday. Can you
- 59:57bring us some, please? We need some.
- 59:59Even the ones in the garage fridge.
- 1:00:01Then come get it.
- 1:00:03There are people here. OMG."
- 1:00:06And then he responds, "Mom will drop off
- 1:00:08in a bit." And she says, "Bet."
- 1:00:11And he's like, "Oh, I guess this is the
- 1:00:12only time he's like a parent." He's
- 1:00:13like, "Bet as in better?" And she says,
- 1:00:16"Bet as in good."
- 1:00:17>> That's crazy. What kind of teacher is
- 1:00:19he? Art teacher?
- 1:00:20>> yeah.
- 1:00:20>> Middle school, high school?
- 1:00:22>> Uh it's a Catholic school. I'm not sure.
- 1:00:24Yeah.
- 1:00:25Then there's this whole Starbucks
- 1:00:27debacle. She asked him to go get her
- 1:00:30Starbucks. And he says, "What do you
- 1:00:32want? But I have to go out. It might be
- 1:00:33in a bit." So he's like telling her it's
- 1:00:35going to be in a little later. "Small or
- 1:00:36medium iced white mocha sweet cream foam
- 1:00:39and extra extra caramel sauce and a
- 1:00:41chocolate croissant.
- 1:00:43How long? Dad. Warmed croissant. What
- 1:00:45the Why would you not get my food
- 1:00:47first? Like {question mark} {question
- 1:00:48mark} {question mark} {question mark} I
- 1:00:50would go if I didn't feel like shit." He
- 1:00:52responds, "I'll let you know when I get
- 1:00:54there. Please relax. Like what the
- 1:00:57I told Dom no because I thought you
- 1:00:58would actually go. Unreliable AF. I was
- 1:01:01on my way out. On my way back I will
- 1:01:03stop. I will. Stop making me stop what
- 1:01:06I'm doing. What the Maybe next
- 1:01:08time just let me know you're going to
- 1:01:09take 5 hours and I'll just have Dom do
- 1:01:11it because he's actually going to go get
- 1:01:13it. Like do I have to have Mom go? Oh my
- 1:01:15god. {question mark} {question mark}
- 1:01:16{question mark} Where are you? What the
- 1:01:18Like please never tell me you can
- 1:01:21do something if this is how it's going
- 1:01:22to be. Oh my god. Yeah, I'm never going
- 1:01:24to ask you to do anything for me again.
- 1:01:26God damn, why can't you do it right? I
- 1:01:27swear to God if I don't get my chocolate
- 1:01:29croissant because they sold out, I'm
- 1:01:30going to flip out. What do you want? I'm
- 1:01:33here.
- 1:01:34>> Is this the same tone that she kind of
- 1:01:36talks to Don?
- 1:01:37>> Yes.
- 1:01:38Yeah, it's like very threatening. Like
- 1:01:40I'm going to flip out. If I don't get
- 1:01:42what I want, I'm about to blow up.
- 1:01:44Like that's the vibe.
- 1:01:44>> So is this for me to assume that the
- 1:01:47reason why she talks this way, acts this
- 1:01:49way, is because the parents let her talk
- 1:01:52to them this way?
- 1:01:53>> And that's why she talks to Don this
- 1:01:55way.
- 1:01:56>> I That's what I think, too. Because I
- 1:01:57think that it starts
- 1:01:58>> like the correlation is very clear.
- 1:02:00>> Yeah. Like the fact that she talks to
- 1:02:01them like this is crazy.
- 1:02:03>> Yeah.
- 1:02:03>> And so he he doesn't even respond to
- 1:02:06that craziness. He just says, "What do
- 1:02:08you want? I'm here." The fact that he
- 1:02:09still went to Starbucks is crazy, too.
- 1:02:12Okay?
- 1:02:13And then she responds, "I texted you and
- 1:02:15Danny." Danny is her sister. "I texted
- 1:02:18you and Danny what I want. Read."
- 1:02:21>> Surella has a sister? McKenzie has a
- 1:02:23sister?
- 1:02:24>> and Don's mom says like it's very clear
- 1:02:26there's favoritism in that family.
- 1:02:28>> Favoritism to McKenzie?
- 1:02:32>> McKenzie is very sociable, considered
- 1:02:35mean girl popular by some people,
- 1:02:38skinny, gets followers on Instagram,
- 1:02:42conventionally maybe attractive,
- 1:02:46and her sister is maybe not considered
- 1:02:49those things.
- 1:02:50>> What do we know about that? Is it just
- 1:02:52from Don's mother, you said?
- 1:02:54>> Don's mother, some small comments made
- 1:02:57by other people, the fact that the
- 1:02:58Surellas never really talk about their
- 1:03:00other daughter, and then I I'm like the
- 1:03:03jail calls. So Natalie will be on the
- 1:03:06phone with McKenzie, who's in prison.
- 1:03:09And you just hear Natalie like screaming
- 1:03:11at Danny all the time.
- 1:03:13>> Screaming at the sister.
- 1:03:14>> Yeah.
- 1:03:15>> The sister is also on the phone.
- 1:03:16>> Yeah. No.
- 1:03:17>> Oh.
- 1:03:17>> Like she'll be talking to McKenzie like
- 1:03:19da da da da da.
- 1:03:20"Daddy, get down here."
- 1:03:22Like "Daddy, what did I say?"
- 1:03:24>> Really?
- 1:03:25>> Yeah, and I'm like "Oh, damn. You should
- 1:03:27be screaming at McKenzie like that.
- 1:03:28She's the one in prison for murder."
- 1:03:31>> Yeah.
- 1:03:33>> Yeah.
- 1:03:33>> Fascinating.
- 1:03:34>> Well, I guess you could argue well,
- 1:03:35she's talking to McKenzie in a softer
- 1:03:36tone because she feels like her daughter
- 1:03:38needs more emotional support since she's
- 1:03:39calling from jail. Whatever, but it's
- 1:03:41still weird. It's still weird. So, these
- 1:03:43are just like speculations, okay? Yeah,
- 1:03:45she just responds "Just hurry for real.
- 1:03:47It's already late AF. I shouldn't even
- 1:03:48be drinking coffee this late, but I
- 1:03:50guess I have to. Next time tell me you
- 1:03:52can't go if you don't want to, dummy AF.
- 1:03:54Did you just call me dumb? Cuz this
- 1:03:56shitstorm is coming for you. I'd go
- 1:03:58hide." McKenzie responds "Are you
- 1:04:00threatening me for no reason when I'm
- 1:04:02sick with COVID? So loving."
- 1:04:05And then like nothing comes out of that
- 1:04:06either.
- 1:04:07A few weeks later, McKenzie is looking
- 1:04:09for a bag of soil and asks Steve where
- 1:04:11is it. He texts her "I don't know, maybe
- 1:04:13in the garage. Ask mom." She texts
- 1:04:15"She's being dumb as That's why
- 1:04:17I'm asking you. Where in the garage?"
- 1:04:19Baby, I don't know. If I had to guess,
- 1:04:21prob- I probably it's probably buried
- 1:04:23somewhere, okay? Goodbye, son. When are
- 1:04:25you going to be back? Because my my
- 1:04:26plant is going to die. Like she's just
- 1:04:28calling her mom dumb as to her dad.
- 1:04:30And her dad doesn't correct her.
- 1:04:33There's a lot of fights about the car.
- 1:04:34She texts him "You are never driving my
- 1:04:35car again. Disgusting. Don't
- 1:04:37eat fast food in my car then
- 1:04:39leave the trash in my car. Disgusting.
- 1:04:41Also, maybe try putting it back the way
- 1:04:42it was when you left it. Don't take my
- 1:04:44steering wheel off if you're not going
- 1:04:45to put it back on." I don't think that
- 1:04:47he took the steering wheel off. I think
- 1:04:49he took the pink fuzzy thing off, you
- 1:04:50know? The little
- 1:04:51She texts again "You're done." She's
- 1:04:53texting her dad "You're done." Steve
- 1:04:55tries to tell McKenzie that this is
- 1:04:56technically his car that he pays for and
- 1:04:58he lets her drive and he demands that
- 1:05:00she speak to him with respect. She
- 1:05:01argues "If you want to be treated with
- 1:05:03respect, how about you give it to other
- 1:05:04people?" This is like a huge thing to
- 1:05:06McKenzie. It feels like people are only
- 1:05:08disrespectful when she doesn't like what
- 1:05:09they do. Like in her English pea-sized
- 1:05:12she's never disrespectful. She text her
- 1:05:14dad, "Have fun in your closet when you
- 1:05:16get home. Your trash is in there." So, I
- 1:05:18think the whole fight is like he
- 1:05:19probably ate something, left the fast
- 1:05:22food bag in the car, she put it in his
- 1:05:23closet.
- 1:05:26He responds, "If I was you, I'd think
- 1:05:27twice before you piss me off and then
- 1:05:29you won't have a car, period. So, text
- 1:05:31me again with your BS and think twice."
- 1:05:32[music]
- 1:05:33She says, "I tell you a million times to
- 1:05:35not disrespect my car and take my
- 1:05:37steering wheel off and leave trash,
- 1:05:38especially eat fast food in my car." But
- 1:05:40you know, but listen, I'm just telling
- 1:05:41you that you're being disrespectful.
- 1:05:43"When you start making car payments and
- 1:05:44insurance payments, until then, keep
- 1:05:47your disrespectful tone and words to
- 1:05:48yourself." The next day, there's text
- 1:05:50messages between McKenzie and her dad
- 1:05:52where he tells her, "Be careful, have
- 1:05:54fun." And like this is again where I
- 1:05:56lose my mind. Like, if I talk to my dad
- 1:05:57like that, I'm not having fun for a long
- 1:05:59time.
- 1:06:01Especially not the next business day.
- 1:06:03Other times she's texting him like,
- 1:06:04"Stop being loud AF." What?
- 1:06:07"I can hear you from all the way up
- 1:06:08here." "Stop being so oversensitive AF
- 1:06:11and I'm not being loud." This is her dad
- 1:06:13texting her. "That's not oversensitive.
- 1:06:15I'm trying to sleep and you're stomping
- 1:06:16around blowing your nose 79 times. Stop
- 1:06:18being a woman hater." "Stop being
- 1:06:20disrespectful to your father." In some
- 1:06:22text messages, it doesn't even seem like
- 1:06:24Steve is trying to discipline her. It
- 1:06:25just seems like he's trying to appease
- 1:06:26her writing things like, "Am I
- 1:06:28unblocked? Sorry you didn't have a good
- 1:06:30time last night. Really, no matter what
- 1:06:32Kenz, I love you and only want the best
- 1:06:34for you." Later in an interview, he
- 1:06:36says,
- 1:06:37>> I was on my daughter all the time. I
- 1:06:38punished her all the time. It's not a me
- 1:06:41going, "Okay, you just go hey, go have a
- 1:06:42whole time. Go smoke dope. Have fun.
- 1:06:44Woo! Drive your car really fast."
- 1:06:45>> I don't see it in the cell bright
- 1:06:46messages, but like maybe you can point
- 1:06:48us elsewhere, Steve. Like maybe you can
- 1:06:49show us. Apparently,
- 1:06:50>> Didn't he say that, "I'm sorry you
- 1:06:52didn't have a good time."
- 1:06:53>> Yeah.
- 1:06:53>> "Have a good day."
- 1:06:55>> Have a good Have be fun. Be safe.
- 1:06:56>> "Be have fun. Be safe."
- 1:06:57>> Yeah.
- 1:06:58>> "Here's some
- 1:06:59White Claw."
- 1:07:00>> Yeah. I'm at Starbucks. What do you
- 1:07:02want?
- 1:07:03Apparently, there's this one time where
- 1:07:04McKenzie and Dom are going to Florida
- 1:07:06and McKenzie's mom allegedly was going
- 1:07:09to go to Florida just to make sure that
- 1:07:11they can check into their place because
- 1:07:13you might have to be 21 to check into
- 1:07:15whatever accommodation they're staying
- 1:07:16at. So, she was just going to go to
- 1:07:18Florida, check in with them, and leave,
- 1:07:19which is insane. This is coming
- 1:07:21from Dom's mom. Dom's mom says
- 1:07:23>> She is their golden child. They treat
- 1:07:26the other sister like a piece of crap.
- 1:07:28She's the pretty one. She's the smart
- 1:07:30one. Just everything. It doesn't matter
- 1:07:32how outrageous
- 1:07:33>> One former friend of McKenzie's says
- 1:07:35about her parents, "They just spoiled
- 1:07:36her, so they just kind of let her do
- 1:07:38whatever." Obviously, at the time, she
- 1:07:40should not have been really just doing
- 1:07:41whatever she wanted. She just always did
- 1:07:43what she wanted. She talks to everyone
- 1:07:45else she wanted. You know, we were
- 1:07:46swimming over at the falls, and you're
- 1:07:47not supposed to be swimming over there.
- 1:07:49So, I'm assuming this is some sort of
- 1:07:50like waterfall or something, right?
- 1:07:52Cops came, and she was just sitting
- 1:07:54there being disrespectful the whole
- 1:07:56time. Just like on her phone. And we're
- 1:07:58like, "Kenzie, bro, like we're not
- 1:08:00supposed to be even here swimming. Like
- 1:08:02why are you being disrespectful towards
- 1:08:03them? Like do you want us to get a
- 1:08:04ticket? Like what is wrong with you? Why
- 1:08:06are you just always like this?"
- 1:08:09Just everybody, you know, authority,
- 1:08:11that's not the way you're supposed to.
- 1:08:13And the first time when she came over to
- 1:08:14my house, she was cursing in front of my
- 1:08:16parents, which made my parents not
- 1:08:18really like her and stuff. Like mind
- 1:08:20you, they're all high schoolers.
- 1:08:21>> Yeah.
- 1:08:21>> I mean, even as adults, like I find it a
- 1:08:23little when I hear someone cursing in
- 1:08:25front of my parents, especially if it's
- 1:08:26the first time they've met. Obviously,
- 1:08:28now that we're all comfortable, it's
- 1:08:29different, but The prosecutor says, "Her
- 1:08:31parents would offer excuses for her
- 1:08:33behavior." And typically, McKenzie would
- 1:08:35walk away from those negative
- 1:08:36interactions at school with more
- 1:08:38freedom, less consequences, and her
- 1:08:40actions being completely excused away.
- 1:08:42Steve says in the Chris Cuomo interview
- 1:08:44about people judging him and his
- 1:08:46parenting,
- 1:08:46>> Let's talk about people, first of all.
- 1:08:48If you don't know me and you're not in
- 1:08:50my life, and how how do you say anything
- 1:08:53about me? How are you judging me without
- 1:08:55knowing me? Was I lenient on some
- 1:08:56things? Yes. Was I harder on some
- 1:08:58things? Yes. I was raising my kid how I
- 1:09:00felt best at the time. That I made
- 1:09:03decisions. I I I'm not a bad parent. I
- 1:09:05may I picked fights that I felt would
- 1:09:07help her, and I picked fights that I
- 1:09:09didn't want to fight with her, and I let
- 1:09:11her go, and I made her make make her
- 1:09:12make her own decisions. And, you know,
- 1:09:14you know, she's a she was almost an
- 1:09:15adult. It's laughable that the people
- 1:09:19think what they think about us. And And
- 1:09:21I look at it this way, if you're not in
- 1:09:22my boat,
- 1:09:23then it really doesn't matter what you
- 1:09:25think as as the people. I mean, anyone
- 1:09:28that doesn't know me, anyone that
- 1:09:29doesn't know me, should keep their mouth
- 1:09:31shut, personally.
- 1:09:32>> He's asked by Chris Cuomo, "Do you blame
- 1:09:34yourself for your daughter's behavior?"
- 1:09:36>> Do I blame myself? Could I have advised
- 1:09:39her better? Sure. I I Do Do I think it
- 1:09:41would have made any difference? I don't
- 1:09:43know. I'm sorry. I Makes me I I don't
- 1:09:45have a problem with the marijuana use. I
- 1:09:47just I'm sorry. I just don't. It was
- 1:09:49It's a battle that I would never win.
- 1:09:51How am I stopping her? Was I going to
- 1:09:53lock her in her room and never let her
- 1:09:54out of the room? Was I supposed to go
- 1:09:56with her everywhere she goes? Could I
- 1:09:57took the car away? Could I just There's
- 1:10:00just so many factors that had nothing to
- 1:10:01do with it. I just
- 1:10:02>> I mean, I don't know. I feel like it has
- 1:10:04a lot to do with it, but And like, okay,
- 1:10:07watching the Netflix documentary, again,
- 1:10:09I was under the impression like, maybe
- 1:10:11maybe she's like playing chess with her
- 1:10:13family, with her parents. She acts like
- 1:10:16this goody-two-shoes in front of them,
- 1:10:17and then she's like living this second
- 1:10:19life outside, where she's posting all
- 1:10:21these pictures. I mean, that seems more
- 1:10:23common than not with social media these
- 1:10:25days. But, no, like just she's kind of a
- 1:10:28Like, even in text messages
- 1:10:29between
- 1:10:31McKenzie and Dom, she gets upset that
- 1:10:33Dom is on her parents' side, instead of
- 1:10:36hers. This is from McKenzie's birthday
- 1:10:38the year before the crash. She says,
- 1:10:39"This is the worst birthday ever." And
- 1:10:41that Well, I would like to think now
- 1:10:43it's not the worst birthday ever, now
- 1:10:44that she's in prison, but anyway,
- 1:10:46Dom is on McKenzie's parents' side
- 1:10:48during a fight, and he tries to explain
- 1:10:49to her, "I'm not on any side there. You
- 1:10:51know, like there's no sides." She
- 1:10:53disagrees. Clearly, there's my side and
- 1:10:55my parents' side. Like, literally, this
- 1:10:57is the worst birthday dinner I've ever
- 1:10:58had. No one meant it for it to be like
- 1:11:00this, babe. I wish it wasn't. Then why
- 1:11:02did you argue with me the whole dinner?
- 1:11:04Like you could have just made things so
- 1:11:05much smoother. Do you know my dress has
- 1:11:06a stain on it? Like this is literally
- 1:11:08the worst. The stain on the dress part
- 1:11:10kind of threw me off, but it just feels
- 1:11:12like the smallest things set her off.
- 1:11:14For example, Dom is looking for a spare
- 1:11:15key somewhere and Mackenzie is telling
- 1:11:17him that she honestly hasn't seen it.
- 1:11:19And then he finds it rather quickly,
- 1:11:22right under the bed. And he lets her
- 1:11:24know and she responds, "Oh, damn." And
- 1:11:27he says, "You could have looked." To
- 1:11:29which Mackenzie says, "You're really
- 1:11:31getting the attitude? I love how you
- 1:11:33always just try to cause a little
- 1:11:34argument like how you Like how about you
- 1:11:36just leave me alone? If you want to try
- 1:11:37and cause an argument, like the
- 1:11:39Okay, I'm more just with you cuz
- 1:11:41I know you didn't look for them, but
- 1:11:43cool. Get mad, lol. Talk to me when
- 1:11:45you're a little bit more mentally
- 1:11:46stable. Thanks, bye." "You know what?
- 1:11:49I'm not even going to entertain that
- 1:11:50comment. Actually, what do you mean
- 1:11:51mentally stable? I mean, no normal
- 1:11:54person just tries to start an argument
- 1:11:56out of that, so I assumed you're not
- 1:11:57mentally stable right now."
- 1:11:59I won't say that it's always Mackenzie
- 1:12:00starting arguments, but she does seem
- 1:12:02hypersensitive to things, lots of things
- 1:12:04or like everything. She also just like
- 1:12:06hates the heat. She complains to Dom,
- 1:12:09"My room is literally hot as My
- 1:12:10mom will not fix it, so I don't want to
- 1:12:12be sweating and tweaking all night. Like
- 1:12:14she literally will not turn down the air
- 1:12:15conditioning. She said she turned it on
- 1:12:17and it was literally on 70, so I turned
- 1:12:18[music] it down to like 62. Like what
- 1:12:20the Why is it so hard for
- 1:12:22her to turn the AC on? Like I can't even
- 1:12:23touch my skin because I sweat instantly.
- 1:12:25Her slow ass turned it off."
- 1:12:27>> The AC's on 70?
- 1:12:29>> Yeah.
- 1:12:30>> And she's saying it's so hot?
- 1:12:32>> Yeah. But also like the power bill.
- 1:12:35She also complains to Dom that her
- 1:12:37parents keep trying to get her to watch
- 1:12:39family videos with them. And she tells
- 1:12:40Dom, "I really hope my parents get the
- 1:12:42mental help they need someday. Like if I
- 1:12:44don't want to watch the family videos
- 1:12:45yesterday, why would I want to watch
- 1:12:47them tonight?" She later complains, "I
- 1:12:49love you, you My house is literally
- 1:12:51freezing. Like I don't know what the
- 1:12:52is wrong with everyone in this
- 1:12:53house. I just asked my mom, "Why is it
- 1:12:55never comfortable in this house?" My
- 1:12:57room is literally like the Arctic or
- 1:12:58100.
- 1:13:00She also complains to Dom in depth about
- 1:13:02how much she hates her family texting,
- 1:13:04"I'm hungry, but I don't want to go
- 1:13:05downstairs because my family sucks." In
- 1:13:07another text thread, she complains,
- 1:13:09"Well, I was trying to take a
- 1:13:10nap, but my dad had to go downstairs and
- 1:13:12turn the TV up to 800, so now I'm
- 1:13:14awake. I hate this
- 1:13:16house. I'm pissed. Of course, my dad
- 1:13:18mind too weak to turn down the TV."
- 1:13:20What do you mean? He's too stupid, like
- 1:13:22weak-minded. I'm just bumping right now.
- 1:13:25So, what? He just left it super loud?
- 1:13:28McKenzie says, I guess as retaliation,
- 1:13:30that she left her speaker volume all the
- 1:13:32way up. Dom is still confused about the
- 1:13:34TV asking if it's really that loud. He's
- 1:13:36like, "It was that loud to wake you up?"
- 1:13:39Bro, it was on like 70.
- 1:13:42Later, she complains to Dom through
- 1:13:43text, "My mom just ruined vacation."
- 1:13:46What happened?
- 1:13:47One, weather going to be like the
- 1:13:49whole time. She deadass asked me if I
- 1:13:51wanted to go to Lake Michigan or
- 1:13:53Pennsylvania,
- 1:13:55which she spells p e n s i v a i n y a.
- 1:14:00I don't even know what that is, okay?
- 1:14:03And she says, "Why the would I want
- 1:14:04to go there? Both holes."
- 1:14:08Dom's like, "Why can't we just cancel
- 1:14:09and go another time?" So, all of them
- 1:14:11were going to go like the Shirrells were
- 1:14:13going to go on this huge family vacation
- 1:14:14for McKenzie's birthday.
- 1:14:16Which is like kind of crazy for a
- 1:14:17birthday, right? And then Dom was going
- 1:14:19to join. But then they found out that in
- 1:14:21Florida, there's like hurricane season.
- 1:14:23Oh god. God forbid, people are losing
- 1:14:25their homes and their lives, okay?
- 1:14:26Because it's a hurricane season. But
- 1:14:28she's like, "Now my vacation is
- 1:14:30right?" So then my mom is suggesting
- 1:14:33Lake Michigan or whatever state that she
- 1:14:35spells that I think is supposed to be
- 1:14:36Pennsylvania.
- 1:14:38And she's like, "Why the would I
- 1:14:39want to go there?" And then so he's
- 1:14:40like, "Okay, well, why can't we just
- 1:14:41cancel and go another time then when the
- 1:14:43weather is better in Florida?" And she
- 1:14:45says, "Cancel my birthday vacation?
- 1:14:47I am going on vacation for my birthday
- 1:14:49and I'm leaving for it today and it's
- 1:14:50going to be somewhere hot. I'm
- 1:14:52not going to Florida if it's going to
- 1:14:53rain the whole time. I'm so mad. If a
- 1:14:55vacay not planned by tonight, I'm for
- 1:14:58real done with this whole family. They
- 1:15:00really just gave me the worst birthday
- 1:15:02I've ever had."
- 1:15:03>> This is crazy. This is
- 1:15:06You can't make this up in a movie. Like
- 1:15:07>> If it were in a movie, I'd say, "Who
- 1:15:09acts like that?" That's so dumb. Babe,
- 1:15:12they can't predict the weather a month
- 1:15:13away and it's going to be nearly
- 1:15:15impossible to book a vacay in a night.
- 1:15:18Buy a ticket to Cali for me and you
- 1:15:19right now. I have like $300. He doesn't
- 1:15:22respond. Dom, do it right now. Book a
- 1:15:24flight somewhere. My mom said she's not
- 1:15:26booking a new one.
- 1:15:27Babe, a flight to Cali for both of us
- 1:15:29will be like $1,100.
- 1:15:32Okay? Plus Ubers and stuff. We might as
- 1:15:35well go to Universal or just plan it
- 1:15:37another day cuz I don't know if we can
- 1:15:39even stay with Kyle right now. So,
- 1:15:41you're saying like they have a friend in
- 1:15:42California, but like they don't know if
- 1:15:44they can stay there, but even on top of
- 1:15:45that, Ubers, food, all of that. Okay,
- 1:15:47don't come on vacation then. Fun.
- 1:15:50Dom tries to reason with her that
- 1:15:51there's not going to be a lot of options
- 1:15:53in this type of short notice. He says it
- 1:15:55seems like everywhere on the East Coast
- 1:15:56is going to rain. She responds, "Wow, I
- 1:15:58didn't know nobody knew that there was
- 1:16:00more than one coast. Wow, was that
- 1:16:02supposed to be a smartass joke? Okay, I
- 1:16:04just won't help then. You weren't
- 1:16:06helping at all. You never started
- 1:16:08helping. I was just talking to your mom
- 1:16:11trying to figure out what we can do. Of
- 1:16:13course you were talking to that crazy
- 1:16:14She won't do to help. That's
- 1:16:17how I know you weren't helping at all,
- 1:16:18the fact that you were texting her.
- 1:16:20She's the one booking it. Except she's
- 1:16:22not and she's just sitting in her
- 1:16:24room. Dom tries to get her to be
- 1:16:26open to Michigan. Northern Michigan is
- 1:16:28actually super super nice in the summer.
- 1:16:30Do not text me. Why the would I go
- 1:16:33to some ass Michigan? Literally
- 1:16:35never say that again. What the
- 1:16:36What the And again, it
- 1:16:38doesn't seem like there's a plan, but
- 1:16:40McKenzie is still sending pictures of
- 1:16:41swimsuits asking which one she should
- 1:16:43bring. And I'm like, I thought you're
- 1:16:44not going on vacay. Okay, mind you,
- 1:16:46she's like pissed because there's a
- 1:16:48hurricane. And then, you know, text
- 1:16:50messages from her dad read, "You need to
- 1:16:52work with us, and going to the west
- 1:16:54coast is out of the question. We do not
- 1:16:55have the time or the money to get there.
- 1:16:57We would get there and then have to turn
- 1:16:59around and leave." To which McKenzie
- 1:17:01responds to her dad, Steve, "There's a
- 1:17:02lot more places in between we could go
- 1:17:04to. I'm never going to forget this."
- 1:17:07They do end up going on this cursed
- 1:17:09birthday trip at this point, and it goes
- 1:17:10as well as you can imagine, they do make
- 1:17:12it to Florida. It's not a hunky-dory
- 1:17:14time. Based off context clues in the
- 1:17:16text, it seems like McKenzie and her
- 1:17:18parents get into a fight. McKenzie is
- 1:17:19upset that Dom isn't backing her up. She
- 1:17:21texts him, "You're supposed to be on my
- 1:17:23side, the Like, what the
- 1:17:25wrong with you? Do you have issues?"
- 1:17:27Dom is confused, he has no clue what's
- 1:17:28going on, and he tells her, "I didn't
- 1:17:29know you were mad." "Hope you know
- 1:17:31you're part of the reason why my
- 1:17:33birthday sucks. Are you slow? Literally
- 1:17:35do not talk to me, lmao." "I didn't know
- 1:17:38someone interrupting you made you that
- 1:17:40mad. That's my bad. But you did threaten
- 1:17:43to stab me in the eye." "Yeah, I don't
- 1:17:45care. Happy you ruined this trip? Thanks
- 1:17:47so much for making me feel special.
- 1:17:49Like, y'all suck, for real." Dom argues
- 1:17:51back, "You're mean to me." "Yeah, when
- 1:17:53you swear at me and threaten me,
- 1:17:56like, that's mean."
- 1:17:57They eventually try to reach a
- 1:17:58compromise with Dom threatening to leave
- 1:18:00to Palm Bay. Like, Dom is like, "If
- 1:18:02you're going to keep being mean to me,
- 1:18:03I'm going to go to my friend in Palm
- 1:18:04Bay." And he says, "Just don't threaten
- 1:18:06to kill me, but otherwise I'll probably
- 1:18:08dip to Palm Bay." "Lmao, okay then. So,
- 1:18:12you just out here complaining, lol. Get
- 1:18:14the out then. Go to Palm Bay, the
- 1:18:16Then go. If you threaten me, I
- 1:18:18will. It's not normal to threaten
- 1:18:20people." Dom tells McKenzie, "I'm done
- 1:18:22with this conversation. You have only
- 1:18:24been mean to me and have tried to hurt
- 1:18:25my feelings." "I wasn't mean to you. I
- 1:18:27was mean after you didn't have my back.
- 1:18:29How are you not getting this?"
- 1:18:31"You threatened to stab me in the eye."
- 1:18:33"After you didn't have on back, are you
- 1:18:35slow?"
- 1:18:37And this is like all in caps. That's why
- 1:18:39I'm emphasizing certain words. Later
- 1:18:41McKenzie decides she's not mad at Dom,
- 1:18:43but rather it's her dad. She texts him,
- 1:18:44"Babe, I just want to go home. I hate
- 1:18:46everyone. Like I've just been fighting
- 1:18:48here. Like he picks fights with
- 1:18:49me any chance he can get. How the
- 1:18:51am I supposed to be want to be nice
- 1:18:52after he just said all that to me? Like
- 1:18:54he's being a dick to me the whole time
- 1:18:55the whole time."
- 1:18:57Dom says, "Babe, you've both been wrong.
- 1:19:00You kind of dogged him." How did I dog
- 1:19:02him?
- 1:19:03Calling him five? Didn't know that was
- 1:19:05offensive. You said something like,
- 1:19:07"Shut up. I'm having a conversation with
- 1:19:09Danny."
- 1:19:10Look, babe, you're both throwing
- 1:19:11gasoline in each other's fires. Yeah,
- 1:19:13I've been saying I'm having a terrible
- 1:19:15vacay and they just don't care.
- 1:19:18They've had a terrible one, too, babe.
- 1:19:20I'm trying to make the best of this and
- 1:19:22everyone keeps ruining it. It's
- 1:19:23literally them, though. You got your
- 1:19:24whole family here and they all care. You
- 1:19:26can't throw it away. No, Dom. I hate
- 1:19:28them all. No, you don't, babe. You're
- 1:19:30just mad. No, I really do. Like I love
- 1:19:33them, but I'm getting the away and
- 1:19:34I never want to be around them like
- 1:19:35ever.
- 1:19:36I'm for real. I'm about to leave. I'm
- 1:19:38done with this vacay. Like this.
- 1:19:40this.
- 1:19:42This vacay is ruined.
- 1:19:44Also the fact that she still like keeps
- 1:19:46calling it a vacay was irking me.
- 1:19:49Dom tries to reason with McKenzie about
- 1:19:50her dad. Babe, you love him. You
- 1:19:52appreciate him for what he does. He does
- 1:19:53nothing.
- 1:19:55He could be way worse, babe. He does a
- 1:19:56lot. He has a lot of pressure. LOL.
- 1:19:58Pressure for what?
- 1:20:00That's probably why he lashes out. I
- 1:20:01hate men.
- 1:20:02Babe, you will never understand what
- 1:20:04it's like to be your dad. Give him a
- 1:20:05break.
- 1:20:06Like the fact that Dom stood up for
- 1:20:08Steve more than McKenzie ever did and
- 1:20:10Steve is out here saying like his
- 1:20:11daughter is a perfect angel is crazy to
- 1:20:13me.
- 1:20:14The whole vacation seems to go wrong and
- 1:20:16I think that's just kind of who McKenzie
- 1:20:17is. You know those people where
- 1:20:19everything around them goes wrong and
- 1:20:21like sometimes it does happen to really
- 1:20:22good people and like you feel lots of
- 1:20:24sympathy. But then there are a lot of
- 1:20:25people where it's like you look at it
- 1:20:27and you say, "Oh, well, everything goes
- 1:20:28wrong not because you're unlucky, but
- 1:20:30because you make everything go wrong."
- 1:20:32Like of course you're having a miserable
- 1:20:33time when you're the one making
- 1:20:35everything miserable. Like, that's the
- 1:20:36type of person Mackenzie strikes me as.
- 1:20:38For example, Dom has a bathroom
- 1:20:40malfunction at some point because the
- 1:20:42toilet malfunctions, and Mackenzie is
- 1:20:44just pissed off that he's taking so long
- 1:20:46in the bathroom, even though he's
- 1:20:47explaining to her the situation, why
- 1:20:50it's taking him a second to clean
- 1:20:51himself up. And she says, "Ruining my
- 1:20:53vacation. There's toilet paper.
- 1:20:56Not sure if you know that. Use
- 1:20:58toilet paper. Why am I telling you how
- 1:21:00to wipe like a 4-year-old?"
- 1:21:02"Kenzie, I have toilet water on
- 1:21:05my privates." So, he said like the
- 1:21:07toilet flushed
- 1:21:08randomly and it like splashed
- 1:21:10everywhere.
- 1:21:11"Go without me. Leave." Like, they're at
- 1:21:13a restaurant at Universal. "Like, go
- 1:21:16leave. Like, I don't care. I'm going to
- 1:21:18call the cops so they can help you. I'm
- 1:21:20so mad at you. Like, you really did
- 1:21:22this? Hell no. What the Like, now
- 1:21:24everyone's just waiting. No one's
- 1:21:26leaving. Like, we are literally waiting
- 1:21:28for you." And this is all in caps. "They
- 1:21:30won't go without you. What the is
- 1:21:32wrong with you? Literally acting like a
- 1:21:33baby. Do I need to come in and wipe your
- 1:21:34ass?"
- 1:21:36I check the timestamps. Only 9 minutes
- 1:21:39has passed. So, I don't know what her
- 1:21:41issue is. Like, holy cow, you need to
- 1:21:42get a grip. I'm getting stressed out.
- 1:21:44She's texting. "Answer right now. Do I
- 1:21:46need to come and wipe your ass or we
- 1:21:48will have an issue. Get the off,
- 1:21:50Dom. Get the off. Literally a
- 1:21:52child. Oh my god. Oh my god. The
- 1:21:54We about to have some issue. Oh my god.
- 1:21:56Oh my god."
- 1:21:57But then things are fine later because
- 1:21:59he asks where she's at and she responds,
- 1:22:01"Hey, Potter. I'm in line for
- 1:22:02butterbeer." The producers of Netflix
- 1:22:05ask Mackenzie in her jailhouse
- 1:22:07interview, "Did you ever feel in your
- 1:22:10arguments with Dom rage that you
- 1:22:12couldn't control?" "No. It was never
- 1:22:14like that. It was always just more like
- 1:22:17I was, you know, when we'd argue, I
- 1:22:19would get sad because he didn't really
- 1:22:21have good communication skills. And we'd
- 1:22:23be cool after that day or a couple hours
- 1:22:25later. We'd be watching movies on the
- 1:22:27couch, eating popcorn.
- 1:22:29She would just get sad.
- 1:22:31She would just get sad. I'm so confused.
- 1:22:34One mutual friend says, "Dom and
- 1:22:35Kenzie's relationship, they were just
- 1:22:37always arguing. That's how it was. And
- 1:22:39me and another friend were always
- 1:22:40talking about it. We're like, bro, Dom,
- 1:22:42like you he has so much going for
- 1:22:44himself. Why doesn't he stick up to
- 1:22:45Kenzie? He can do so much better." Dom
- 1:22:48shares the story of a trip that she took
- 1:22:50with Dom and Kenzie.
- 1:22:51>> Dom is telling someone?
- 1:22:53>> No, Dom's mom is telling the police. So,
- 1:22:55it was going to be, you know, the whole
- 1:22:56family, Dom's family. She's like, "I
- 1:22:58took off work. We were all going to go
- 1:23:00canoeing. So, I packed snacks for the
- 1:23:02canoe in the cooler and all of that. So,
- 1:23:03we had a bag that had chips and you
- 1:23:06know, the sort of things that was like
- 1:23:07super you don't like want to put it in
- 1:23:09stuff because they would get crushed.
- 1:23:11So, like usually on a road trip, you
- 1:23:12save them for last, like the chip bag
- 1:23:14and then it goes in the backseat,
- 1:23:15whatever. Well, we forgot. She ruined
- 1:23:18the entire canoe trip. She sat there and
- 1:23:20threw a fit that we had forgotten those
- 1:23:22chips, that she had nothing to eat, and
- 1:23:24I kept saying, "We're enjoying our day.
- 1:23:25There's no fighting. We're going to find
- 1:23:27you something to eat." We even stopped
- 1:23:29at this bar. She was not satisfied with
- 1:23:31anything. Like no nothing it did not
- 1:23:33matter what I had. She did not have
- 1:23:35those chips. So, it was like she's
- 1:23:38explaining like how they went on this
- 1:23:39whole almost like goose chase to find
- 1:23:41her something that she was happy enough
- 1:23:43eating.
- 1:23:44And [snorts] Dom was just stressed about
- 1:23:45it the whole time because she was so
- 1:23:47pissed about those chips. And she was
- 1:23:48very crafty on how she would do stuff
- 1:23:50because she would stick her digs, you
- 1:23:53know, me and Angelo were in a canoe,
- 1:23:55they're there. She would stick her digs
- 1:23:57in her comments so that we couldn't
- 1:23:59hear. But, it was a big tantrum. I mean,
- 1:24:01everything was a dig. You forgot the
- 1:24:03chips. You forgot Okay, I get it. Do you
- 1:24:05know what I mean? But, it's not enough
- 1:24:06to have a tantrum and ruin the day.
- 1:24:09Dom's brother Angelo later tells the
- 1:24:11police that McKenzie would go through
- 1:24:12self-esteem issues and Dom would want to
- 1:24:14break up with her.
- 1:24:16Because she would quote
- 1:24:17>> She'd get crazy about stuff, like accuse
- 1:24:19him of cheating and stuff when he's not.
- 1:24:20>> Not constant, but there'd be every
- 1:24:22couple of weeks or so where they were
- 1:24:23almost breaking up and then she'd be
- 1:24:25threatening to hurt herself. Stuff would
- 1:24:27arise and it would really never It just
- 1:24:30wouldn't take a healthy course, to be
- 1:24:32honest with you.
- 1:24:33The officer is like, "What do you mean,
- 1:24:34she would go crazy? Like
- 1:24:36What's crazy?" There were times where
- 1:24:37she called Dom and said, "If you break
- 1:24:39up with me, I'm going to kill myself."
- 1:24:40Word for word. And then Dom, he was like
- 1:24:42a very very selfish person and he did. I
- 1:24:44mean, obviously they were together for a
- 1:24:46long time and they built a relationship,
- 1:24:48they cared for each other deeply. Even
- 1:24:50though Dom did care for her deeply, I'm
- 1:24:52not disputing any of that, but he's seen
- 1:24:56all the toxicness that she was putting
- 1:24:57on to him.
- 1:24:59So, he's saying like Dom would try to
- 1:25:01tell McKenzie that he would be there for
- 1:25:02her after their breakup. So, like you
- 1:25:05don't have to do anything drastic. Like
- 1:25:07he's going to be there, but he just
- 1:25:09can't be in this relationship anymore.
- 1:25:11And McKenzie would just keep coming
- 1:25:13back, quote, "I'll kill myself."
- 1:25:16Essentially, is what Angelo was
- 1:25:17alleging. Angelo says that he actually
- 1:25:19was very close with McKenzie in the very
- 1:25:21beginning of McKenzie and Dom's
- 1:25:23relationship to the point where she
- 1:25:24would go to Angelo to get comfort
- 1:25:26whenever Dom and her would fight. But
- 1:25:28Angelo says that he started distancing
- 1:25:30himself because, quote, "I just seen
- 1:25:32that she was very very selfish." He says
- 1:25:34he couldn't deal with it anymore, so he
- 1:25:36blocked her number. Like that's how bad
- 1:25:38it got. Like he had to go and block her
- 1:25:40number because she would blow up his
- 1:25:42phone nonstop when she couldn't get in
- 1:25:44contact with Dom. He'd be in the car
- 1:25:46with Dom and Dom is driving, so he
- 1:25:47doesn't pick up his phone and they're
- 1:25:49just going to go get like food and she's
- 1:25:51just blowing up both their phones.
- 1:25:53Dom's brother says he witnessed fights
- 1:25:55and he feels like, quote, "Honestly,
- 1:25:57he'll be like so nice Dom will be so
- 1:25:59nice and accommodating as possible to
- 1:26:00stop the fight and she'd be one of those
- 1:26:03people that is just petty. Like petty
- 1:26:05petty petty petty." And again, normally
- 1:26:07I would take anything that one party's
- 1:26:11sibling says about a relationship with a
- 1:26:13grain of salt, but then like I did see
- 1:26:15all those text messages.
- 1:26:16>> Mhm.
- 1:26:17>> And I'm like, this seems like more or
- 1:26:19less at least accurate in my opinion
- 1:26:20about his characterization. And then
- 1:26:23she'll be in, you know, in between
- 1:26:24fights text Dom's brother.
- 1:26:27Like in between fights, she'll be like,
- 1:26:29"Hey, can you do my homework for me? I
- 1:26:30don't want to do my math homework."
- 1:26:33>> He's like, "Why would I Why would I
- 1:26:35She really lives in that universe that
- 1:26:37everyone just revolves around her.
- 1:26:39>> Yeah. And then for some fights, he says,
- 1:26:41you know, they would have to call
- 1:26:42Kenzie's parents to tell them to come
- 1:26:43get her because she's refusing to leave
- 1:26:45being toxic. They pick her up. Dom's
- 1:26:47brother is like
- 1:26:49I mean, by the way, these fights are
- 1:26:50always started by Kenzie. And then that,
- 1:26:51you know, they ask her to leave. And
- 1:26:53then the parents have to come pick her
- 1:26:54up. Somehow she'll make it back and
- 1:26:56she'll just be pounding on the windows
- 1:26:58demanding to be let back in. He says
- 1:27:00that her behavior started escalating as
- 1:27:02she got older. He says, quote,
- 1:27:04>> Everything behind it, the the number one
- 1:27:06word for it is like selfish and
- 1:27:07self-centered. Doesn't really know how
- 1:27:09to like go through arguments properly.
- 1:27:11Doesn't know how to do stuff like
- 1:27:12healthily. But her behavior never really
- 1:27:14got better. To me, it almost just got
- 1:27:16more drastic. Like before when she was
- 1:27:18younger, 9th and 10th grade, she would
- 1:27:20go home when they were fighting or
- 1:27:21whatever and then be texting him saying,
- 1:27:24"Oh, I'll hurt myself blah blah blah
- 1:27:26blah blah." And then he's like, "Okay,
- 1:27:28please don't. We can work this out.
- 1:27:30Whatever, you know."
- 1:27:31>> But then when it came to the point where
- 1:27:32she's 16, she's driving now, she's 17,
- 1:27:35she's even older, she's driving back
- 1:27:37over, she's banging on the windows, her
- 1:27:39behavior became more erratic. Maybe also
- 1:27:41because she had more ways to let it out
- 1:27:43and to show that.
- 1:27:44>> I think that's exactly what's going on.
- 1:27:46Maybe the parents talked to her this way
- 1:27:48ever since she was little. And maybe the
- 1:27:50parents just chalk it up as that's just
- 1:27:52how she what she says. She doesn't do
- 1:27:54anything. I don't know. Sounds like the
- 1:27:56dad even thinks it's cute to talk like
- 1:27:58that. Texting like slow AF.
- 1:28:00>> You just unlocked something in my brain.
- 1:28:02Okay, so I One thing I did notice in all
- 1:28:04the jail calls, right? Is McKenzie,
- 1:28:07every time she sneezes, she like she
- 1:28:09doesn't have like a like soft sneeze.
- 1:28:11It's like "achoo, achoo", right? And it
- 1:28:13almost like every single time without
- 1:28:15fail Natalie will just be like, "Oh,
- 1:28:17that's so cute."
- 1:28:19>> [laughter]
- 1:28:20>> Well, no. Cute little sneezes.
- 1:28:22>> Which I don't know why like I didn't
- 1:28:23really care for it, but that just like
- 1:28:25reminded me of it. It's just so random.
- 1:28:28>> Yeah.
- 1:28:28>> Like the way she's talking to her. I
- 1:28:29mean, she's in she's she's a convicted
- 1:28:31murderer, right?
- 1:28:33>> And she sneezes, the mom goes, "That's
- 1:28:35so cute."
- 1:28:36>> Yeah.
- 1:28:37>> There's nothing cute at all.
- 1:28:39>> About this whole situation. You're on a
- 1:28:40recorded line.
- 1:28:42>> Yeah.
- 1:28:42>> From Securus, the jail
- 1:28:44>> Yeah.
- 1:28:44>> line.
- 1:28:45>> Like is that her default? Like she's
- 1:28:46just always like, "That's so cute."
- 1:28:48>> Yeah. Everything is like very McKenzie
- 1:28:51will be talking about how she ate ramen
- 1:28:54because she doesn't like the prison
- 1:28:55food. And then, you know, the mom will
- 1:28:57be like, "Well, is it better than last
- 1:28:58time?" Then she's like, "Yeah, I made it
- 1:29:00in the shower this" "Oh, that's good.
- 1:29:02That's good."
- 1:29:03>> Well, did you have lunch? What was
- 1:29:05lunch?
- 1:29:05>> Oh, okay. Look, I just ate ramen.
- 1:29:07>> Was it better than last time?
- 1:29:09>> No, I didn't I don't even know what it
- 1:29:10was. I just ate ramen.
- 1:29:11>> No, I mean, did you make it better than
- 1:29:13you did last time?
- 1:29:14>> Yes, I used the shower this time to make
- 1:29:16it.
- 1:29:16>> And that was much better?
- 1:29:17>> Uh-huh.
- 1:29:18>> Good.
- 1:29:19>> And I'm like, "Hey, so nothing about
- 1:29:21this situation is good."
- 1:29:23But Angelo does tell investigators,
- 1:29:25quote, "There was multiple times even in
- 1:29:27the month of July that he was trying to
- 1:29:29break up with her. A couple days before
- 1:29:31the crash, she was hitting him on the
- 1:29:33highway while driving down the highway.
- 1:29:35He had to pull his car over on the side
- 1:29:36of the highway, not in a very safe
- 1:29:38parking spot either, and have somebody
- 1:29:40else come pick them up and drive the car
- 1:29:41home because he was scared that she was
- 1:29:42going to make him crash. And that was
- 1:29:44just prior to the day before the actual
- 1:29:46crash where she was driving."
- 1:29:48>> Prior to the day before the crash?
- 1:29:51>> Yeah, so it's just he's saying like it
- 1:29:52was very recent to the crash.
- 1:29:54I think it's pretty clear the
- 1:29:56relationship between McKenzie and Dom is
- 1:29:57not good. It's always been rough. I
- 1:29:59mean, going through all their fights it
- 1:30:01seems like in the very beginning the
- 1:30:02biggest issue that was that Dom didn't
- 1:30:04feel like he had enough space in the
- 1:30:05relationship. He would complain that he
- 1:30:07just couldn't even breathe for an hour,
- 1:30:10which I can see and I know like some
- 1:30:12people saw the beginning parts of their
- 1:30:14text messages and felt like Dom was the
- 1:30:16mean one and this was her reacting to
- 1:30:18his meanness. I think like I did see a
- 1:30:20bunch of Tik Toks like that. And just
- 1:30:22collectively seeing it, I would say that
- 1:30:24they're both teenagers in a relationship
- 1:30:26trying to figure out how a relationship
- 1:30:28works, but it does seem
- 1:30:32like she does not give him a moment
- 1:30:33alone. And some people just need time to
- 1:30:36decompress in a relationship. And I feel
- 1:30:39like that's kind of like that's a lot of
- 1:30:40people, but it just it's not happening.
- 1:30:43And there is a cheating thing. Now, it's
- 1:30:45unclear how exactly it happened, but Dom
- 1:30:46argues that it was all while they were
- 1:30:48on break. So, he's you know, throughout
- 1:30:50he's arguing that this isn't technically
- 1:30:52not cheating because they were on break.
- 1:30:53McKenzie argues that it was while they
- 1:30:55were still together, but it does seem
- 1:30:57like Dom did in fact have relations with
- 1:30:59another girl, Faith, who is a friend um
- 1:31:01since middle school, says on the Netflix
- 1:31:04docs and she's throughout the jail
- 1:31:06calls, you know, she's there. So, she's
- 1:31:07a big supporter of McKenzie. Faith says,
- 1:31:10"I told Kenzie
- 1:31:10>> Faith is a supporter of McKenzie?
- 1:31:12>> Like a friend and supporter cuz she's in
- 1:31:14the jail calls. She talks to McKenzie on
- 1:31:16the phone in jail.
- 1:31:18>> And Faith slept with Dom
- 1:31:20>> No, no, no. Faith is saying in the
- 1:31:22Netflix documentary,
- 1:31:23>> Oh.
- 1:31:23>> quote, "I told Kenzie, hey, your
- 1:31:25boyfriend just cheated on you with one
- 1:31:27of our best friends."
- 1:31:28>> Oh.
- 1:31:29>> I felt terrible for Kenzie. I mean, it
- 1:31:31sucks to be cheated on. Moving forward
- 1:31:33in their relationship, it caused a lot
- 1:31:34of trust issues. Heard it be like, "Hey,
- 1:31:36who are you with? What are you doing?"
- 1:31:37This is clearly told from McKenzie's
- 1:31:39point of view since she's DMing her
- 1:31:41friend about it later. So, I found these
- 1:31:43Instagram DMs and she DMs her, "He
- 1:31:46cheated on me four times in the
- 1:31:47beginning. Two times were with my best
- 1:31:49friend."
- 1:31:50"Bro, it like me up. You would
- 1:31:52die. I'm going to tell you their story.
- 1:31:53I was a freshman, he was a junior.
- 1:31:55Literally, her name was redacted. Um
- 1:31:58literally, her name was redacted. She
- 1:32:00would leave my house at night and say
- 1:32:01she's going to go another friend's
- 1:32:02house, but instead she would walk to my
- 1:32:04boyfriend's and him. She didn't
- 1:32:05even tell me, he did. And he was
- 1:32:08publicly cheating. Literally, like they
- 1:32:09had gym together and would around
- 1:32:11in school and no one told me. It's
- 1:32:13insane.
- 1:32:14In 2020, about a year before the crash,
- 1:32:16McKenzie writes to Dom, "When you
- 1:32:17cheated on me, the girls didn't come up
- 1:32:19to you, you went up to them." To which
- 1:32:21Dom responds, "They came to me." He
- 1:32:23argues, again, it happened when they
- 1:32:25were on break, and quote, "You bring up
- 1:32:27me cheating like three times a week."
- 1:32:29Maybe because you cheated on me.
- 1:32:31McKenzie tells him the energy he needs
- 1:32:33to have is quote, "You hate all
- 1:32:36but me." Do you know how many boys I
- 1:32:38ignore? Like 30 a day. I'm famous. I
- 1:32:40need my views.
- 1:32:43>> What is she talking about?
- 1:32:44>> So, like following people on Instagram.
- 1:32:46She's like, "You don't need to follow
- 1:32:47girls, but I need to like follow people
- 1:32:49and interact with people online because
- 1:32:50I'm famous and I need my views."
- 1:32:53She wants him to text a girl quote, "But
- 1:32:56you can't even text a to get off
- 1:32:57your dick." "I don't even have her
- 1:32:59number. Get it."
- 1:33:02She also goes into his phone to secretly
- 1:33:04block girls that are liking his photos
- 1:33:05and she sees nothing wrong with that,
- 1:33:06but Dom tells her, "I get no
- 1:33:08privacy. Like you." One TikTok she
- 1:33:11posts she's reacting to what she
- 1:33:13believes to be a funny comment that
- 1:33:14reads, "Chicks be like, check your man,
- 1:33:16not me. I beat him up already. It's your
- 1:33:19turn."
- 1:33:20So, I don't know if there was a lot of
- 1:33:21trust established in their relationship
- 1:33:22at this point, but one of their more
- 1:33:24recent fights is Dom seems to be getting
- 1:33:26fed up with McKenzie hanging out with
- 1:33:28this one particular friend of
- 1:33:29McKenzie's. Her Let's call her G.
- 1:33:33Dom believes G is a sex worker and he
- 1:33:35doesn't like his girlfriend hanging out
- 1:33:37with her. Which normally, I am not a fan
- 1:33:39of any partner dictating who you should
- 1:33:41or should not be friends with, and I
- 1:33:42also feel like someone's occupation is
- 1:33:45not some sort of benchmark for their
- 1:33:47morality, but I guess on an objective
- 1:33:50level, maybe it could be warranted to
- 1:33:53not want a 17-year-old girl to hang out
- 1:33:54with a sex worker, but maybe that's
- 1:33:56still something her parents should be
- 1:33:58concerned about and getting upset about,
- 1:34:00but instead of Dom. DM messages between
- 1:34:03This is around like June 8th, 2022. This
- 1:34:06is the month before Dom and Davion's
- 1:34:08deaths. McKenzie messages Dom, do I have
- 1:34:11to pull up? I would answer. I would
- 1:34:13answer. I would answer. Let me know if
- 1:34:15you're actually ending this. She video
- 1:34:17chats Dom. He doesn't respond. Like this
- 1:34:19is, you know, this is a pattern that
- 1:34:21we've been seeing. She sends him 10
- 1:34:22messages all back-to-back. Let me know
- 1:34:24if you're actually ending this. Answer
- 1:34:26now. She's freaking out on him and he
- 1:34:28just asks her, are you going to chill
- 1:34:30with thoughts? Which side note, again, I
- 1:34:32don't necessarily like the word usage
- 1:34:34here to talk about someone's alleged,
- 1:34:36maybe, occupation, but I digress.
- 1:34:38McKenzie tells him, you forced me and
- 1:34:40made me choose between you and my
- 1:34:42friend. You are being abusive. She tries
- 1:34:44to call him. He doesn't respond. She He
- 1:34:47DMs, are you going to chill with
- 1:34:49thoughts, specifically prostitutes?
- 1:34:51Again, not the best word usage. Are you
- 1:34:54going to show love, compassion, and make
- 1:34:56me feel special and chase me? Yes, of
- 1:34:58course I will.
- 1:34:59I'm going to go out to eat with my
- 1:35:00friends when they ask me to go or go
- 1:35:02roller skating. That does not make me
- 1:35:04one of them. He responds, I'm not going
- 1:35:06to chase you if it's going to be toxic.
- 1:35:08It's not toxic. Kenzie, you choose the
- 1:35:11thoughts we done. Babe, I'm sorry.
- 1:35:14McKenzie starts demanding he stops
- 1:35:15hanging out with friends she doesn't
- 1:35:17like, to which he responds, my friends
- 1:35:19ain't prostitutes, babe. And you need to
- 1:35:21unfollow every girl you follow, too. I
- 1:35:22don't care if you, quote, knew them your
- 1:35:24whole life. If I'm not allowed to be
- 1:35:26friends with redacted,
- 1:35:28okay, then unfollow every boy you
- 1:35:30follow. McKenzie asks, and you need to
- 1:35:32buy me something really nice if I'm not
- 1:35:34allowed to be friends with them. And I
- 1:35:35don't follow boys.
- 1:35:37They start arguing about who's cheating
- 1:35:39on who and if it was cheating, if it was
- 1:35:40during break or not, and McKenzie tells
- 1:35:42him, whatever, Dom. Go be single. Then
- 1:35:45you obviously never loved or cared about
- 1:35:46me if it's easy to treat me like this.
- 1:35:49But instead of letting things go,
- 1:35:51she DMs him again.
- 1:35:52Why the did you just stop
- 1:35:53answering?" She tries to video call him
- 1:35:55again, but again, this is near the end
- 1:35:57of their relationship. Dom is standing
- 1:35:58his ground and is telling her, "You will
- 1:36:00get influenced by these people whether
- 1:36:02you think you will or not." McKenzie
- 1:36:04doesn't like that. She responds, "No,
- 1:36:05I'm not. I have a mind of my own. I'm
- 1:36:07not a follower. I'm a leader. You know
- 1:36:09that.
- 1:36:10It's a fact. Why aren't you letting me
- 1:36:12have a mind of my own?" "Kenzie, it's a
- 1:36:14proven fact. Why do you think you and me
- 1:36:16are exact same by now? We always had
- 1:36:18lots of things in common, but now we
- 1:36:20literally say the same We finish
- 1:36:22each other's sentences. Part of that is
- 1:36:24because we are only around each other,
- 1:36:26you know? Like we eat the same foods
- 1:36:28now. We listen to the same music, have
- 1:36:29the same interests. Like I want you to
- 1:36:31have friends, but I don't want five out
- 1:36:33of five of them to be prostitutes cuz I
- 1:36:35know you're going to start acting
- 1:36:36different cuz you did this last time
- 1:36:38when you were with her. I seen it slowly
- 1:36:40happen last time. It's factual."
- 1:36:43"Well, I'm a new me every day. I'm never
- 1:36:45going to do that again, and you know
- 1:36:46that."
- 1:36:48>> Do what?
- 1:36:49>> Exactly.
- 1:36:50>> What does that mean?
- 1:36:50>> Dom is hesitant. "I don't know, Kenzie."
- 1:36:53>> "Well, if you love me and want to be
- 1:36:54with me, you can trust me and believe
- 1:36:55that."
- 1:36:56>> Dom responds, "What happened last time?"
- 1:36:59Dot dot dot.
- 1:37:00>> "That was so long ago. That was not me.
- 1:37:02Just like you're not a cheater anymore
- 1:37:03even though you did last month."
- 1:37:05>> "That was 9 months ago, not 3 years
- 1:37:08ago."
- 1:37:09>> Insinuating that whatever Kenzie did was
- 1:37:119 months ago and what he did was 3 years
- 1:37:14ago.
- 1:37:15Later, Dom says, "No, Kenzie. Last time
- 1:37:17you started chilling with G, you sold
- 1:37:19your body. Now you're hanging with
- 1:37:21multiple of them." "That was over 8
- 1:37:24months ago."
- 1:37:25There have been conversations online
- 1:37:26that McKenzie was working as a sex
- 1:37:28worker before the crash, which there is
- 1:37:30no evidence of. I do believe the police
- 1:37:32went down that rabbit hole as well, but
- 1:37:34when you have messages like those, it
- 1:37:36makes you speculate. Prosecutors later
- 1:37:38have a detailed section in their brief
- 1:37:40where they write, "Possible
- 1:37:41prostitution, pandering, obscenities."
- 1:37:44Here's everything that I found going
- 1:37:46through the FOIA about sex work or
- 1:37:48potential sex work in an Instagram DM,
- 1:37:51which we had to comb through like 2,000
- 1:37:52pages for the Instagram data for the
- 1:37:54FOIA. She and one of her Instagram
- 1:37:57friends are talking about how they got
- 1:37:58new Dior bags. The friend says, "I need
- 1:38:00a few sugar daddies." McKenzie responds,
- 1:38:03"Real talk though, I want a foot one."
- 1:38:06In an Instagram DM, April 1st, 2022,
- 1:38:09McKenzie gets a DM from a guy named
- 1:38:10Mark. He asks, "Would you send me a
- 1:38:13picture of your belly button?" A little
- 1:38:15how much? How much what? Do you mean
- 1:38:17money?
- 1:38:18Mark sends an example picture and
- 1:38:20writes, "I would like to have a picture
- 1:38:21like this."
- 1:38:22>> Who is Mark? Like a rando?
- 1:38:24>> yeah. "Very close to your belly button
- 1:38:26and in good quality.
- 1:38:28Maybe like $30 for a good quality photo.
- 1:38:30What do you think about that?"
- 1:38:31"No, $30 is way too much. I would spend
- 1:38:34max $10 for it. It's just a picture."
- 1:38:36"My friends sell it for $50, so $30 was
- 1:38:38generous. I don't care how much your
- 1:38:40friends send it. It's just a picture
- 1:38:41with an effort of like 1 minute and you
- 1:38:43show your body to the world anyway."
- 1:38:45"I don't, but thank you. Stay weird."
- 1:38:48"I just have a belly button fetish
- 1:38:49though. It's okay if you don't want to
- 1:38:50do it for 10. Have a nice day."
- 1:38:52March 2022, she gets a message from a
- 1:38:54random Instagram account. Can I spoil
- 1:38:56you? Yes. "I'm cool with it. My snap is
- 1:39:00big cheese Tokyo. Hit me up and I'll
- 1:39:02take care of you."
- 1:39:04Then March 20th, 2022, some guy named
- 1:39:07Gary Peterson, the CEO, literally that's
- 1:39:09like Gary Peterson the CEO, DMs
- 1:39:11McKenzie. "How do you manage to being so
- 1:39:14hot? Hi beautiful. Sorry if this is
- 1:39:16going to offend you. Would you be
- 1:39:17interested in weekly payment allowance
- 1:39:18of $600 to be my online sugar baby? No
- 1:39:20sexual intimacy involved, just your
- 1:39:22online companionship." To which McKenzie
- 1:39:24responds, "Hey!"
- 1:39:26In all caps, "I'm interested. How do I
- 1:39:28know this is legit?" Another DM exchange
- 1:39:30is between another guy, person,
- 1:39:32individual, I don't know. McKenzie, um
- 1:39:35they message her. "Hello baby." "Hey."
- 1:39:37"How are you doing?" "Good, how about
- 1:39:39you?" "Where you you're baby?" "Ohio.
- 1:39:41It's cold here." Okay, baby, have you
- 1:39:43ever heard about sugar mama before?
- 1:39:45McKenzie stops responding.
- 1:39:47>> Have you heard of sugar mama?
- 1:39:49>> Yeah, I know. It's kind of weird, right?
- 1:39:51>> Okay.
- 1:39:51>> Yeah. These are just messages that I
- 1:39:53found. Then another message between
- 1:39:55another Snapchat user and McKenzie where
- 1:39:57they ask her, "Can we do this or what?"
- 1:39:59McKenzie responds, "Four bands." Which
- 1:40:01means $4,000. To which the other person
- 1:40:03responds, "You can have four straps of
- 1:40:06$1, lol." She responds, "$1,000."
- 1:40:10"You finger that
- 1:40:12for me and
- 1:40:14reach the destination
- 1:40:16while I'm doing it, then yeah, I'm
- 1:40:18down. Are you a squirter?"
- 1:40:21And she responds, "Send $1,000, we can
- 1:40:24link anything you want for 2500."
- 1:40:27>> This is she's underage.
- 1:40:29>> Yeah. They respond, "Um you can get cash
- 1:40:32money in person. No way I send
- 1:40:34you anything up front, especially
- 1:40:35$1,000, lol. So let me know when and
- 1:40:37where you want to do it."
- 1:40:38"$1,000 pics, $2,000 to link. You for
- 1:40:42real doing meets? Okay, if you're taking
- 1:40:44a month between each response, then I'm
- 1:40:46not interested." She reiterates, "Two
- 1:40:48bands to link, 1K for pics."
- 1:40:52>> Link meaning in person?
- 1:40:53>> Yes.
- 1:40:54McKenzie is SnapChatting this individual
- 1:40:56July 15th, 2022. Like 16 days before the
- 1:41:00crash.
- 1:41:01"Do you have Amazon wish list or cash
- 1:41:03app or needing help with anything?" Um
- 1:41:05she doesn't Another, you know, message
- 1:41:07McKenzie sends out is apparently from
- 1:41:09July 19th where she says, "Send me a
- 1:41:11band and we can link up, lol."
- 1:41:15The police did find several nude photos
- 1:41:16and videos in her phone, but there
- 1:41:18doesn't seem to be a clear indication
- 1:41:19that she sent it to anyone in exchange
- 1:41:21for funds. So it doesn't appear that
- 1:41:23anything really came out of this rabbit
- 1:41:25hole. However, judging from the context
- 1:41:27of the text messages between Dom and
- 1:41:29McKenzie, it feels like they're arguing
- 1:41:31about McKenzie potentially being paid by
- 1:41:33a guy to do things to her feet, and
- 1:41:36maybe Dom is just under the impression,
- 1:41:38maybe McKenzie lied. I don't know. Like,
- 1:41:40we don't know. These are just messages,
- 1:41:42but
- 1:41:43messages from January 25th, 2022 read
- 1:41:46from McKenzie to Dom, "You realize I'm
- 1:41:48just going to go get a sugar daddy and
- 1:41:49start selling feet pics, and I'm going
- 1:41:50to be doing just fine. So, this is
- 1:41:52really your last chance to handwrite me
- 1:41:53an apology or fix this or we're really
- 1:41:55done."
- 1:41:57Then March 5th, 2022, Dom texts
- 1:41:59McKenzie, "Yet you let a dude your
- 1:42:01feet for money like 6 months ago."
- 1:42:04McKenzie responds, "We were broken up.
- 1:42:06We were broken up and it was feet, lmao.
- 1:42:09Once again, then leave."
- 1:42:13Then June 8th, 2022, Dom writes to her,
- 1:42:16"Yeah, I love you, but last time you
- 1:42:17started hanging out with her, you
- 1:42:18literally let her sell your body to that
- 1:42:20random dude, and she hooked you up with
- 1:42:21the dude." "We were broken up and it was
- 1:42:24just my feet. Do you think about it more
- 1:42:25than I think about it?" "You ran off and
- 1:42:28became a prostitute, because I don't
- 1:42:30personally think it's bad, but if you do
- 1:42:32and we're together, then I'm not going
- 1:42:33to do it.
- 1:42:34You could never tell your family you
- 1:42:36were a prostitute."
- 1:42:38"Because it's only my business, and it's
- 1:42:40not a prostitution."
- 1:42:43June 25th, 2022, Dom tells McKenzie,
- 1:42:45"Kenzie, there is always going to be
- 1:42:47problems if you're hanging out with
- 1:42:48someone who got a dude to your feet
- 1:42:50for money." There are more messages from
- 1:42:52the month of June. This is again in
- 1:42:54June, the month before they're killed.
- 1:42:56Dom is really putting his foot down on
- 1:42:57the matter. He even unfollows McKenzie
- 1:42:59on Instagram, and he stops responding to
- 1:43:01her, and she's freaking out while he
- 1:43:02remains relatively calm. She's video
- 1:43:05calling him, "Why the aren't you
- 1:43:07answering? Are you just reading this?
- 1:43:09You can't chill with prostitutes." And
- 1:43:11again, the word usage here is not
- 1:43:14preferred, but she responds, "Answer.
- 1:43:17What the Answer." He says he
- 1:43:19unfollowed her because he doesn't want
- 1:43:20her messages showing up in his primary
- 1:43:22message inbox on Instagram. "Cuz I don't
- 1:43:25want your messages in my primary. I
- 1:43:26didn't I I didn't think you'd hit me up
- 1:43:28on here. I thought you was going to be
- 1:43:29done. I thought we broke up. I unadded
- 1:43:32you on everything. McKenzie is freaking
- 1:43:34out in all caps. If we are done, let me
- 1:43:36know now because I'm so over this
- 1:43:38manipulation. You would be so good at
- 1:43:40it, too, because you wrote the book on
- 1:43:41it. So, you know exactly how to
- 1:43:43manipulate people.
- 1:43:44Kenzie, if you want to hang with
- 1:43:45prostitutes, we're done. He tells her
- 1:43:48that one specific friend, especially
- 1:43:50quote, she tried to make you her
- 1:43:51prostitute sidekick type bring you
- 1:43:54on her dates and That's weird. So,
- 1:43:56no, you can't chill with them.
- 1:43:58She did not bring me on her dates. She
- 1:44:00has never. She did before, and that dude
- 1:44:02bought you a shirt or something like
- 1:44:04that Like, so weird.
- 1:44:06>> So, it sounded like something happened
- 1:44:09right 9 months ago.
- 1:44:10>> Yeah, it seems like he's like if I had
- 1:44:12to give him the benefit of the doubt, it
- 1:44:13doesn't seem like his qualm about this
- 1:44:16friend is based off her occupation, but
- 1:44:18more so that
- 1:44:20>> The friend is asking or
- 1:44:23you know, influencing McKenzie to do
- 1:44:25>> Or like involving her in specific
- 1:44:27>> under age.
- 1:44:28>> Yeah, exactly. So,
- 1:44:28>> This is a crazy crazy crazy crime for
- 1:44:31whoever party was involved in this whole
- 1:44:34>> Police do
- 1:44:36>> operation.
- 1:44:36>> Police do um pull cell bright data from
- 1:44:40her text messages with this friend, and
- 1:44:42I didn't find anything alarming in them.
- 1:44:45>> So, the text message doesn't show
- 1:44:47anything.
- 1:44:48>> Yeah, but the text messages was like
- 1:44:50>> So, are you saying we don't There's no
- 1:44:52solid evidence that this happened?
- 1:44:54>> Mhm. There's no solid evidence that this
- 1:44:55happened.
- 1:44:56It could have happened, and the police
- 1:44:58don't find it worth their while since
- 1:45:01McKenzie is already convicted of being,
- 1:45:03you know,
- 1:45:04>> Right, right, right. But I'm saying like
- 1:45:06whoever the dude is
- 1:45:08>> Yeah. So, she says And again, like I
- 1:45:11like I said, I don't know if there's
- 1:45:12proof of this happening. I just know
- 1:45:13that they're having a conversation as if
- 1:45:16it really happened.
- 1:45:17>> Right, right. Okay.
- 1:45:18>> You know. And [clears throat] McKenzie
- 1:45:20says she tried and it didn't work
- 1:45:21because I wasn't into it. You said I
- 1:45:23could go. I asked you first. I let you
- 1:45:26make your own decisions. No, you told me
- 1:45:28I could go, so you're not allowed to
- 1:45:29hold that over my head, and that man
- 1:45:31didn't even touch me.
- 1:45:32Kenzie, I'm just saying. They get into
- 1:45:35another fight, but interestingly, it
- 1:45:36seems like Kenzie's tone is softening
- 1:45:38down compared to a month or two prior.
- 1:45:40Maybe she knows that Dom isn't putting
- 1:45:42up with it anymore. I don't know, but he
- 1:45:44tells her, "Kenzie, I stand by what I
- 1:45:47say."
- 1:45:48She says, "Where did Dom go? The Dom I
- 1:45:50loved. This is not you. I know you know
- 1:45:52that, too."
- 1:45:54He says, "Honestly, I do." And I think
- 1:45:56he's referring to him standing by what
- 1:45:58he says. "I know you're sad and hurt on
- 1:46:00the inside, so you're hurting me. You're
- 1:46:02making me sad. You just ruined your
- 1:46:044-year relationship in a day, and you
- 1:46:05don't care."
- 1:46:07He responds, [music] "I got to make it
- 1:46:08to the top."
- 1:46:10"This is not how you do it. You hurt
- 1:46:11your number one fan."
- 1:46:13>> [music]
- 1:46:13>> "You should trust" So, he's saying, "You
- 1:46:15should trust that I know best. I made
- 1:46:17you who you are. I helped you grow into
- 1:46:19a loving person, because if you knew me
- 1:46:21at all, you would let me make my own
- 1:46:23decision like I let you make yours."
- 1:46:25>> But, who's saying right now?
- 1:46:26>> Kenzie. So, Kenzie's like, "Let me make
- 1:46:29my own decisions about who I'm friends
- 1:46:30with."
- 1:46:32It appears they make up, but like I
- 1:46:34said, with what everyone's been saying
- 1:46:35about their relationship, a lot of
- 1:46:37people believe that Dom was going to
- 1:46:38break up with Kenzie. If not soon, maybe
- 1:46:41eventually. And they think that's why
- 1:46:44Kenzie crashed the car. She knew he was
- 1:46:46over her. He wasn't going to stick
- 1:46:47around while she just did whatever she
- 1:46:49did. But, Kenzie and her parents refute
- 1:46:52this. They argue sure, they fought, but
- 1:46:55they were just in a young relationship
- 1:46:56where both of them were still learning,
- 1:46:57but ultimately, they loved each other
- 1:46:59and were probably going to get married.
- 1:47:01They believe that there is no way that
- 1:47:02Kenzie was going to crash the car
- 1:47:04intentionally, and that Dom was going to
- 1:47:05break up with her. They think none of it
- 1:47:07makes sense.
- 1:47:09Steve, Kenzie's dad in the Netflix doc,
- 1:47:12says, "It's tragic what happened to
- 1:47:13those two boys. But, think if it was
- 1:47:15your kid. What if Kenzie was yours? I'm
- 1:47:18going to fight for my daughter, and we
- 1:47:19have ironclad evidence that disputes
- 1:47:22what was said in the trial.
- 1:47:24In a more recent interview with the
- 1:47:25Daily Mail, Natalie says there were
- 1:47:27three people in the car. Anything could
- 1:47:29have happened, anything. So, all these
- 1:47:31people creating all these stories, it's
- 1:47:32just a bunch of story time. Nobody
- 1:47:34knows.
- 1:47:35Natalie says Mackenzie still behind
- 1:47:37bars, loves Dom, and struggles with the
- 1:47:40loss, but it's not like she sits there,
