  1. 0:02hey welcome back so we're talking about
  2. 0:06Walmart heard of heard of I saw bumper
  3. 0:08sticker once that says Walmart always
  4. 0:11low wages
  5. 0:13always yeah pretty crazy so Walmart
  6. 0:16wanteded to go to Germany we already
  7. 0:17talked about some of the reasons why
  8. 0:18they wanted to do it makes a lot of
  9. 0:21sense German government says
  10. 0:23nine we don't want you because what does
  11. 0:26Walmart do to local businesses they
  12. 0:30destroy them you can't keep you can't
  13. 0:33compete with Walmart right so if you
  14. 0:35have a local pharmacy and you have
  15. 0:37medicine you pay more for the medicine
  16. 0:40to sell than Walmart sells it
  17. 0:44for so you can't compete about against
  18. 0:48it and Germany is very sensitive to um
  19. 0:52having uh other having um unemployment
  20. 0:57so originally they said nine
  21. 1:00but then it turns out there was a chain
  22. 1:03of stores that sold very similar stuff
  23. 1:06to Walmart that was getting ready to go
  24. 1:08bankrupt now Germany can e the German
  25. 1:12government can either say well there go
  26. 1:14those jobs or they said hey Walmart
  27. 1:17would you like to buy this chain of
  28. 1:20stores I said but you have to understand
  29. 1:23something there's some requirements for
  30. 1:25you if you want to buy this store first
  31. 1:27off you need to keep the hour short
  32. 1:31right you can't have all night 24 hours
  33. 1:33and even late at night at all either so
  34. 1:37the German government says that uh
  35. 1:41businesses should close around six s
  36. 1:43o'clock right you should be home with
  37. 1:46your family instead of staying up and
  38. 1:49working at the company in fact if you go
  39. 1:50to Germany you'll notice that almost
  40. 1:52everything closes down the only things
  41. 1:53that open are bars and restaurants and
  42. 1:55everything else is pretty much closed
  43. 1:57down except for like they have 7-Elevens
  44. 1:58you you can go get groceries at the
  45. 2:017-Eleven but the problem with the
  46. 2:047-Eleven is you know that the price of
  47. 2:07milk at 7-Eleven is a lot more than it
  48. 2:10would be at a regular store
  49. 2:12so most people so they said you can't
  50. 2:15stay open all night you have to have
  51. 2:16shorter hours which is kind of against
  52. 2:18the Walmart
  53. 2:19idea they said also uh you can't fire
  54. 2:23anybody right so you in Germany when you
  55. 2:26get hired it's hard to get fired and so
  56. 2:29they said hey Walmart if you want to
  57. 2:31take over you have to keep the same all
  58. 2:34the same employees right and you have to
  59. 2:36keep the wages the same so Walmart
  60. 2:38Walmart loves to undercut paying their
  61. 2:41employees they just do fact you can be a
  62. 2:43full-time employee at Walmart working 40
  63. 2:46hours a week and still qualified for
  64. 2:48food
  65. 2:49stamps yeah
  66. 2:51yeah wow wow also we'd like you to pay
  67. 2:55extra taxes right so everybody else is
  68. 2:58taxed at a at a standard rate we want
  69. 3:01you to pay more than they do on
  70. 3:04taxes also you need to pay for this uh
  71. 3:09you need to pay a premium in other words
  72. 3:11if you want to buy this this series of
  73. 3:14stores you have to pay more than they're
  74. 3:17worth we know on our accountants figured
  75. 3:19out how much they're worth and you have
  76. 3:20to pay more than what they're
  77. 3:22worth oh and then the last thing you're
  78. 3:25not allowed to remodel it you can't put
  79. 3:27a big old sign up you can see for 12
  80. 3:30miles away that says Walmart you have to
  81. 3:31keep the same you can take down their
  82. 3:33sign and put up another sign the same
  83. 3:35size but you can't remodel either so
  84. 3:37there's not much room in the in the
  85. 3:39between the aisles in the in these
  86. 3:42stores so they have little arrows
  87. 3:44telling you what what you can't go the
  88. 3:46the back way you you stop you have to
  89. 3:48back out right so they Walmart doesn't
  90. 3:51like that Walmart want to expand they
  91. 3:53make it big so you have two or three
  92. 3:54rows going through the German government
  93. 3:57says no you can't remodel these things
  94. 3:59these things are kind of falling apart
  95. 4:00you got to keep keep them going now
  96. 4:03Walmart did the numbers and they found
  97. 4:06out that there was no way that they
  98. 4:09could make a profit by doing this they
  99. 4:12just said there's no way German
  100. 4:14government says take it or leave
  101. 4:16it Walmart says we'll take
  102. 4:20it even though they knew they were going
  103. 4:23to lose money they took
  104. 4:26it well that's pretty that's pretty
  105. 4:28stupid isn't it
  106. 4:30no it's not Walmart is not you don't
  107. 4:32become the number the largest company in
  108. 4:34the world by revenue or employees by
  109. 4:37being stupid you don't Walmart they are
  110. 4:39smart right so they bought the bit
  111. 4:42bought the Walmarts and I've been to the
  112. 4:44Walmart in Germany right here's what
  113. 4:47they look
  114. 4:49like yeah isn't that place a dump I mean
  115. 4:54does that look anything like our
  116. 4:56Walmarts here in the United States no
  117. 4:59wear dumps I mean that's
  118. 5:01just look at this thing and they said
  119. 5:03that's all that's the sign that could
  120. 5:05put up
  121. 5:08yeah
  122. 5:10yeah pretty crazy
  123. 5:12stuff now why would Walmart do this why
  124. 5:17would Walmart do this crazy crazy stuff
  125. 5:20well first
  126. 5:21off Walmart knew so so what's the
  127. 5:25purpose of
  128. 5:26Walmart it's not to give toasters
  129. 5:29what is the purpose of Walmart to make
  130. 5:34money that's the purpose of Walmart
  131. 5:36right so when they opened up this when
  132. 5:39they took over the buildings you say why
  133. 5:41would they do this and you can think of
  134. 5:43all sorts of nice reasons and we could
  135. 5:45list up all sorts of great reasons to do
  136. 5:47it but they knew that they're losing
  137. 5:49money and the purpose is to Lo is not to
  138. 5:52lose money it's to make money
  139. 5:56yet why would they do this why would
  140. 5:58they open stores in Germany if they knew
  141. 6:01they were going to lose money you say
  142. 6:03well maybe they'll make money later no
  143. 6:05no no they don't care about later right
  144. 6:07they care now now how could
  145. 6:12Walmart make money by losing money they
  146. 6:16say maybe it's taxes not has nothing to
  147. 6:18do with tax write offs or anything like
  148. 6:20that maybe it's currency exchange rates
  149. 6:22it's not currency exchange rates right
  150. 6:25it's they were making money right off
  151. 6:27the bat they started making money
  152. 6:30by losing money in
  153. 6:32Germany they think how can you how could
  154. 6:35they possibly do this let's think about
  155. 6:38the medicine right we know that Walmart
  156. 6:42can buy medicine and sell it at prices
  157. 6:46below what a local pharmacy can
  158. 6:49do how can they do
  159. 6:52this because Walmart Buys in bulk don't
  160. 6:55they they buy in bulk if you buy in bulk
  161. 6:59you get discounts on it don't you so
  162. 7:01let's say you go to a store and you say
  163. 7:04I want to buy a bottle of aspirin I have
  164. 7:08a headache right they say here's a
  165. 7:10bottle of aspirin and it's
  166. 7:14$2 if you went to that same store and
  167. 7:16say hey look I'll buy a thousand bottles
  168. 7:19of aspirin from you would they give you
  169. 7:21a
  170. 7:23discount yes they would so let's say if
  171. 7:26you say I'm going to buy a thousand
  172. 7:27bottles of aspirin they might say okay
  173. 7:29okay we'll sell it to you for
  174. 7:31$150 what if you said I'm going to buy a
  175. 7:34million bottles of
  176. 7:36aspirin would they give you an even
  177. 7:38bigger
  178. 7:39discount
  179. 7:41yes so that's how they made money so
  180. 7:45since now they have this whole chain of
  181. 7:47stores in Germany added to the all the
  182. 7:50rest of their stores
  183. 7:52worldwide Now by adding these more in
  184. 7:55Germany they added they made it so they
  185. 7:57buy things in larger buls don't they so
  186. 8:01e so they since they're bottling let's
  187. 8:03say say they bottle B they buy uh a
  188. 8:07million bottles of aspirin before and
  189. 8:08now they buy two million bottles of
  190. 8:10aspirin because they have all these
  191. 8:11German businesses going now that the
  192. 8:14manufacturer is going to lower their
  193. 8:15rates aren't they so think about this
  194. 8:19even though they're losing money in
  195. 8:22Germany by losing money in Germany that
  196. 8:26makes their operations around the world
  197. 8:28more profitable
  198. 8:30because they're buying in such larger
  199. 8:31bulk
  200. 8:33now now they're not losing very much
  201. 8:35money in Germany but even so they're
  202. 8:37losing a little bit of money in Germany
  203. 8:39but that makes all their other stores
  204. 8:41more profitable because they're buying
  205. 8:42in larger quantities and they're selling
  206. 8:44in larger quantities they're selling
  207. 8:46everything there's over a million
  208. 8:47different products at a Walmart so you
  209. 8:49take that so if you save two cents on
  210. 8:53everything and then you multiply that
  211. 8:56times how many Walmarts they have in the
  212. 8:58world
  213. 9:01how much stuff are they going to sell
  214. 9:03now now they're going to be able to buy
  215. 9:05in larger quantities which causes they
  216. 9:08get a discount when they buy in larger
  217. 9:10quantities which causes them to
  218. 9:12ultimately be profitable so even though
  219. 9:14they're losing money in Germany by
  220. 9:17losing money in Germany it's making them
  221. 9:21worldwide more
  222. 9:25profitable wow see we're learning how
  223. 9:28money Works aren't we who would think
  224. 9:31that by losing money in Germany you're
  225. 9:33making money and that's what they did
  226. 9:36right so now they can buy in even larger
  227. 9:39quantities it takes a while to get wrap
  228. 9:41your head around that I know this is a
  229. 9:43hard one since they're buying in larger
  230. 9:45quantities on everything their cost
  231. 9:48their their costs go down around the
  232. 9:50world and they're making money losing
  233. 9:53money by making
  234. 9:55money wow well pretty no it gets even
  235. 9:58more interesting
  236. 10:01because if you go to Germany right now
  237. 10:03you will not see any
  238. 10:06Walmarts they're
  239. 10:09gone Walmart leaves Germany they tried
  240. 10:13for a decade they couldn't make it
  241. 10:15because it was hard for them to undercut
  242. 10:18the local
  243. 10:19Discounters the customers were creeped
  244. 10:21out by the greeters you know those
  245. 10:22greeters right this but they they got
  246. 10:24usually it's old person and they they
  247. 10:26say hi welcome to Walmart hi
  248. 10:29and you think well they're greeting me
  249. 10:31this is the Germans said that's just
  250. 10:33creepy right welcoming me to a store
  251. 10:37that's just weird um you know why the
  252. 10:40greeters are there don't you it wasn't
  253. 10:43to make you feel warm and fuzzy it make
  254. 10:45there for security right they were there
  255. 10:47to make sure that people aren't bringing
  256. 10:49stuff in and saying that they bought it
  257. 10:51there or whatever they this is all
  258. 10:53security that's what by the way they've
  259. 10:55done away with greeters now in Walmarts
  260. 10:57and there's security every everybody
  261. 10:59knows the security but it's still like
  262. 11:02kind of weird right they also the the
  263. 11:05German employees did not like some of
  264. 11:07Walmart's strange ideas do you know
  265. 11:09Walmart quite of at a lot of stores they
  266. 11:12actually do cheers in the morning yeah
  267. 11:14they go wooo Walmart yay Walmart we're
  268. 11:18the best woo woo hey we're the best
  269. 11:20Walmart and the Germans said that is
  270. 11:22just
  271. 11:23creepy give me a w w give me an a he and
  272. 11:27the Germans are like
  273. 11:30what this this this is just just weird
  274. 11:32right and also the Germans um are
  275. 11:37allowed to flirt with each other in the
  276. 11:39workplace in the United States um it's
  277. 11:43not illegal but it's it's very there
  278. 11:46there's a high amount of risk and we
  279. 11:47will talk about that later about the
  280. 11:49risk involved with doing that and so
  281. 11:50they said nope you can't you have to
  282. 11:52just be now why would they do this why
  283. 11:55would they leave Germany if it's making
  284. 11:59a money they're still making money they
  285. 12:00were making money the whole time the
  286. 12:02whole 10 years they were there they're
  287. 12:03making money oh they pulled out of
  288. 12:05Germany they also pulled out of South
  289. 12:09Korea now think about Germany and South
  290. 12:11Korea a lot of similarities pretty darn
  291. 12:14High GDP pretty darn High gni lots of
  292. 12:18people consumer oriented makes all very
  293. 12:21centrally located for their makes a lot
  294. 12:23of sense they said nope nope we're out
  295. 12:26of there why would they ever do that
  296. 12:29because they decided to go to
  297. 12:32China yeah yeah so think about the the
  298. 12:35economy in Germany and South Korea it's
  299. 12:38wealthy country but it's been very flat
  300. 12:41right the growth is real flat what's the
  301. 12:43growth like in
  302. 12:45China going straight up isn't it yeah so
  303. 12:50they said let's go to China where they
  304. 12:51don't have all these silly little rules
  305. 12:53that we have to follow think about this
  306. 12:56when people say well why didn't they
  307. 12:57just expand into Germany into China and
  308. 13:00keep the Germans and the South Koreans
  309. 13:02because they give even larger quantities
  310. 13:04think of it this way if you have a
  311. 13:07million dollars do you want your million
  312. 13:09dollars in a bank account that gets 1%
  313. 13:11or that gives you
  314. 13:14eight% I want the 8% I'm GNA take all my
  315. 13:16stuff out of the 1% and put it in the 8%
  316. 13:19right same way said Germany that Walmart
  317. 13:22said we're GNA we're we're not making
  318. 13:24enough money here let's go to China now
  319. 13:27let's look at the Chinese Walmart
  320. 13:30let's compare that to a German
  321. 13:33Walmart yeah it's pretty crazy it's
  322. 13:37pretty crazy so you go to Walmart in um
  323. 13:40uh China I've been to one Walmart in
  324. 13:42China and you what's weird is you go to
  325. 13:46the parking lot it's full nice cars so
  326. 13:50in the United States poor people go to
  327. 13:52Walmart rich people go to Costco that's
  328. 13:55just it the average uh household income
  329. 13:59of a Costco Shopper is
  330. 14:04$150,000 you go to w Walmart and tell me
  331. 14:07that that's the average income it it's
  332. 14:09pretty obvious that that just driving
  333. 14:11parking lot you can pretty much figure
  334. 14:13that that's not
  335. 14:15correct so in China you go to a Walmart
  336. 14:19they're full of beautiful house
  337. 14:21beautiful
  338. 14:23cars it turns out in China rich people
  339. 14:26go to Walmart you know in United States
  340. 14:29that says always low prices cost good
  341. 14:32they the one I went to didn't have any
  342. 14:34of that stuff it just had it was just it
  343. 14:37was really wealthy right everybody only
  344. 14:39the rich people go there they had
  345. 14:41beautiful stuff right guys have all been
  346. 14:43to Ikea you know how it's hard to find
  347. 14:46your way out of
  348. 14:48Ikea this Walmart I went to was the same
  349. 14:51way you couldn't find yourself out of
  350. 14:53there in fact they had you trapped like
  351. 14:54a rat in a maze and they were really
  352. 14:57smart so what happened is so this one is
  353. 15:00like three stories tall this Walmart
  354. 15:02right here is like three stories
  355. 15:05tall so what happens is you walk into
  356. 15:08the Walmart and they give you a grocery
  357. 15:11basket give you a big grocery basket you
  358. 15:14take the grocery basket and you get on
  359. 15:16an
  360. 15:17escalator and as it puts as you get on
  361. 15:20the escalator the teeth there little
  362. 15:22teeth in the in the bottom of the
  363. 15:24escalator that grab your cart so it
  364. 15:27pulls you up so going up the escalator
  365. 15:30it's being you're basically being pulled
  366. 15:32up a rail right but here's where it gets
  367. 15:35great this is diabolical this is so so
  368. 15:39insane as you're going up you're
  369. 15:44shopping oh okay so as you're going up
  370. 15:46your shopping so let's say you want to
  371. 15:47buy you're thinking should I buy this
  372. 15:50how long do you have to make your buying
  373. 15:53decision so you going to say oh do I
  374. 15:56want that do I want that uh get
  375. 16:00oh now I can't put it back
  376. 16:02I'm so they trap you to buying stuff I
  377. 16:06mean it's insane isn't it and it takes
  378. 16:09you all the way up to the top and when
  379. 16:11you get up to the top uh of the the
  380. 16:13Walmart it's beautiful but this one this
  381. 16:16one was just beautiful expensive stuff
  382. 16:18like Gucci not knockoff Gucci real Gucci
  383. 16:21lots of expensive stuff nothing like can
  384. 16:24you imagine Gucci at a
  385. 16:26Walmart yeah but but they're real right
  386. 16:30and um uh then you start to try to find
  387. 16:33your way out and you start to work your
  388. 16:35way
  389. 16:36down work your way down and as you go
  390. 16:39down the prices of stuff starts to go
  391. 16:41down too so the top floor where you have
  392. 16:43to that's you you get off at the top
  393. 16:46floor then you say wow everything's so
  394. 16:48expensive oh no no and then you see PE
  395. 16:50prices that starts to get down and you
  396. 16:52go well that's a good deal that's
  397. 16:54cheaper because it was really expensive
  398. 16:55back there that's a good they're the
  399. 16:58social engineer in isn't it they're
  400. 16:59making you think that that you're
  401. 17:01getting better deals and then so at the
  402. 17:03bottom you're paying more for it because
  403. 17:06you you're just comparing everything to
  404. 17:08what was at the top
  405. 17:10floor yeah yeah now why do rich people
  406. 17:13go to Walmart and not poor people well
  407. 17:16if you've ever been to China you'll
  408. 17:17notice that their refrigerators are very
  409. 17:20different than they are in the United
  410. 17:21States inited states in Belgium I bet
  411. 17:25you some of you have refrigerators that
  412. 17:28are big enough for you to sleep in you
  413. 17:30know what I'm talking about right huge
  414. 17:32monster refrigerators in China they
  415. 17:34don't have those they fresh food a lot
  416. 17:37more than we do we don't they don't free
  417. 17:39stuff and they have tiny little
  418. 17:40refrigerators right they're not that
  419. 17:44big my cat could probably sleep in one
  420. 17:46of their refrigerators but that'd be
  421. 17:48about it I mean they're they're not very
  422. 17:49big who do you think has a big
  423. 17:52refrigerator the rich people and then
  424. 17:55the rich people shop at Walmart
  425. 18:03so let's take a
  426. 18:09look at shopping at
  427. 18:12Walmart so yes you can see some they
  428. 18:14have some different stuff this is at the
  429. 18:17bottom but look how how pretty that is
  430. 18:21look how pretty that is it's it's a it's
  431. 18:24different it's just different than way
  432. 18:27and yes they have alligators there that
  433. 18:28you can eat in eat in all sorts of stuff
  434. 18:34but if you've ever been to China you'll
  435. 18:36notice that this is actually a pretty
  436. 18:39fancy grocery store if youve ever been
  437. 18:41to most Asian grocery
  438. 18:43stores okay aaji is beautiful I got that
  439. 18:46but a lot of them
  440. 18:47aren't they're more like the German
  441. 18:50standard of Walmart than the Chinese
  442. 18:52standard of Walmart but you look at this
  443. 18:53I mean that's beautiful you don't see
  444. 18:55things like this in a lot of stores in
  445. 18:58all over
  446. 19:00yeah yeah so who can afford to shop here
  447. 19:02the rich
  448. 19:04people
  449. 19:21okay come
  450. 19:24on here's 15 weird things you'll find in
  451. 19:28Walmart in in
  452. 19:30China and so yeah always said the
  453. 19:33alligators you'll see all sorts of
  454. 19:34interesting foods and we'll talk about
  455. 19:36interesting Foods here in a little bit
  456. 19:37but you will see them and yeah it's it's
  457. 19:41it's kind of fun walking around it's
  458. 19:42like wow people can eat that yeah we'll
  459. 19:45talk more about that so yes they have
  460. 19:47the
  461. 19:48crocodiles with a grapefruit in their
  462. 19:51mouth I guess I don't
  463. 19:53know oh yeah just grab the meat this is
  464. 19:57actually more common in most countries
  465. 19:59of the world right everybody in the
  466. 20:00United States unless it's in a a plastic
  467. 20:04foam with plastic wrap on it people say
  468. 20:07ew it's gross most countries don't have
  469. 20:09that plastic foam it's really kind of
  470. 20:11useless isn't it especially if you're
  471. 20:12eating fresh food all the time there's
  472. 20:15no reason and so you will see I've
  473. 20:16traveled all over the world this is the
  474. 20:19model for how food is how meat is
  475. 20:22usually picked
  476. 20:23up
  477. 20:27yeah okay then you've got um here they
  478. 20:30packaged orange juice and corn oil
  479. 20:32together I have no idea what that why
  480. 20:36they would do that but they
  481. 20:38do turtles and frogs yep they have
  482. 20:42Turtles and frogs I've SP to lots of
  483. 20:44grocery stores with frogs in them and
  484. 20:47yep Andy have you ever eaten a frog yeah
  485. 20:49it's good how about a turtle I've never
  486. 20:53had a turtle now would
  487. 20:55I
  488. 20:57sure I wouldn't order it but sometimes
  489. 21:00you don't have a choice which we'll talk
  490. 21:03more about that here in a little bit
  491. 21:06okay uh Walmart branded Spirits this
  492. 21:10this stuff is kind of scary we'll talk
  493. 21:11about that here real quick rib cages so
  494. 21:15just get some
  495. 21:18ribs assorted dried reptile Parts
  496. 21:23imagine going to Walmart and getting
  497. 21:25some parts
  498. 21:29boxes of liquor and these are really
  499. 21:30expensive too they're really expensive
  500. 21:34and some more
  501. 21:36frogs and every type of Chopstick you
  502. 21:39could ever want to
  503. 21:42use and you can get some ducks just grab
  504. 21:49one uh hot and spicy beef granules I
  505. 21:53think this is for
  506. 21:55soup Pig
  507. 21:57faces yeah can imag you just go Walmart
  508. 22:00here in Belleview and say hey give me a
  509. 22:02couple Pig
  510. 22:08faces a male
  511. 22:11bikini yeah there's a TV there's a movie
  512. 22:14called Barat right I don't know and I
  513. 22:16guess they're coming up with a new one
  514. 22:17coming you should see that because
  515. 22:19that's even worse than than than this
  516. 22:22male
  517. 22:24bikini
  518. 22:26yeah he bulk rist
  519. 22:29yeah that's pretty
  520. 22:31common so you can see there's some
  521. 22:33interesting things there at the
  522. 22:35Walmart so now we're talking about we're
  523. 22:37talking about doing business in China
  524. 22:39now why do we care about China it's got
  525. 22:42a lot of people we've already talked
  526. 22:43about how many people it has nobody
  527. 22:45knows but we know it has a lot of people
  528. 22:47now a lot of people don't understand
  529. 22:50China they they to to do business in
  530. 22:53China you have to understand how the
  531. 22:55government works in China and you will
  532. 22:57never learn how the government Works in
  533. 22:59China by watching television it does not
  534. 23:01work that way it's everybody hears the
  535. 23:04Communist party and president G and all
  536. 23:07that no it doesn't work that way China
  537. 23:10actually has two governments I've had
  538. 23:13Chinese students come before me to they
  539. 23:15say Andy I'm from China I can tell you
  540. 23:19we only have one
  541. 23:23government here's a
  542. 23:25question just because you're from a
  543. 23:28country does that mean
  544. 23:30you
  545. 23:31understand everything about your
  546. 23:33country's government for
  547. 23:36instance president of the United
  548. 23:39States our president of the United
  549. 23:42States is are they are they popularly
  550. 23:45elected so whoever gets the most votes
  551. 23:47wins no no George Bush Jr lost the
  552. 23:51popular vote Donald Trump lost the
  553. 23:53popular
  554. 23:54vote so then we have What's called the
  555. 23:57electorial college okay so we have an
  556. 23:59electoral college that so we vote then
  557. 24:02the electorial college takes part of
  558. 24:04those numbers and then they have their
  559. 24:06own little vote but not all the
  560. 24:09delegates have the same voting power and
  561. 24:13authority and you have super delegates
  562. 24:15and secondary delegates and you got all
  563. 24:17these things and they have conventions
  564. 24:18and all that most Americans really don't
  565. 24:21know how our president is elected right
  566. 24:24is it that strange that there are people
  567. 24:26in China who don't understand this right
  568. 24:30so China has two governments the top
  569. 24:33government that everybody knows about is
  570. 24:35called the Communist Party the Communist
  571. 24:38party that's the one you hear about on
  572. 24:39television all the time and from a
  573. 24:42western perspective doing business in
  574. 24:44China it can be kind of difficult to
  575. 24:47predict what they're going to do so one
  576. 24:49day they might say something and then
  577. 24:50they can turn around the next day and
  578. 24:52say something completely different and
  579. 24:54there's
  580. 24:55no they can just they can change right
  581. 24:58then there's the lower level of
  582. 25:00government the lower level of government
  583. 25:02so it's like the the top and then the
  584. 25:04bottom right the top is the Communist
  585. 25:07Party the bottom is the Lo or local
  586. 25:10government is a better way to look at it
  587. 25:13so they have two so the bottom
  588. 25:14government is based off of the set of
  589. 25:16sets of rules and they're very stable
  590. 25:19those rules are locked in and they've
  591. 25:21been the same for a long long time right
  592. 25:25and so if you want to do business in
  593. 25:26China you can either go through top
  594. 25:28Communist party where you can go through
  595. 25:30the rules there's a problem these rules
  596. 25:32are some of them are over a hundred
  597. 25:34years old and technology has changed a
  598. 25:36lot in the last hundred years
  599. 25:40so it can be difficult to work through
  600. 25:43with the rules also if you have a friend
  601. 25:47who is a member of the Communist party
  602. 25:49or high up in the Communist party they
  603. 25:51can make life very easy for you for
  604. 25:55instance I was in Beijing a number of
  605. 25:57years ago
  606. 25:59and uh when I was in Beijing they opened
  607. 26:02up this brand new train that was going
  608. 26:05directly from Beijing to Las City Tibet
  609. 26:09right so basically the opposite side of
  610. 26:11the country this was a cool train right
  611. 26:14this is everybody had R it was super
  612. 26:16Hightech so for instance they had to go
  613. 26:19across the permafrost you know but they
  614. 26:21were up it goes up real high desert it
  615. 26:24goes up across permafrost which has to
  616. 26:27stay frozen
  617. 26:28but trains generate heat when they go
  618. 26:30over the tracks so they had to
  619. 26:32refrigerate the tracks so there's
  620. 26:34actually air conditioning on the tracks
  621. 26:36to keep it from melting then they have
  622. 26:39holes in the mountains right well the
  623. 26:40pro same thing they have to refrigerate
  624. 26:42these holes in the mountains also it
  625. 26:44goes up like 22,000 feet in the air you
  626. 26:47know Mount Rainer is 14 goes up 22,000
  627. 26:51feet well you can't function there right
  628. 26:54you can't right when I was in Los city
  629. 26:56that was 18 that was was tough 22 you
  630. 26:59can't do it so what they do is they pump
  631. 27:02in oxygen almost like an
  632. 27:05airplane and you're sitting there and
  633. 27:08you have oxygen you can put on the
  634. 27:10oxygen masks right as you're going
  635. 27:12riding this train through this high
  636. 27:14desert with no life it looks like you're
  637. 27:16on Mars it's really beautiful right and
  638. 27:19so you're going there and then you take
  639. 27:20off your mask and you decide you want to
  640. 27:22go to the
  641. 27:23bathroom I saw two people pass out
  642. 27:26walking to the bathroom just from
  643. 27:28getting up to walk to the bathroom so
  644. 27:30it's super Hightech and super cool and I
  645. 27:33wanted to go on this so they just opened
  646. 27:35it up when I was there I was talking to
  647. 27:37my friend I said hey I heard I've been
  648. 27:39reading about this train this looks
  649. 27:41really cool uh I'd like to to get on it
  650. 27:44he says oh no there's a two-year waiting
  651. 27:48list to go on that train right plus the
  652. 27:52first like six trains are only for
  653. 27:56members of the communist party you're
  654. 27:59Chinese Communist party you're not a
  655. 28:01member of the Chinese Communist party so
  656. 28:04you come back in a couple of years and
  657. 28:05maybe we can do something I said man
  658. 28:08that would have been fun to go on I
  659. 28:10really I've been reading up on this
  660. 28:11thing he
  661. 28:13says do you really want to go I said oh
  662. 28:18I'd love to go but I can't get in he
  663. 28:20says I'm in the Communist party and I'm
  664. 28:23fairly high up you really want to
  665. 28:27go and also at this time they closed L
  666. 28:30of to tourists right and because they
  667. 28:33wanted this train thing to go perfectly
  668. 28:35I
  669. 28:36said I'd love to go this would be
  670. 28:38amazing he says let me see what I can do
  671. 28:42next morning I'm have I'm having
  672. 28:44breakfast with him he pulls out the
  673. 28:45tickets he says I'm gonna go with you to
  674. 28:48to that and I was the first person that
  675. 28:51looked anything like this on the train I
  676. 28:53was the only person on the train that
  677. 28:55looked anything like this and so I got
  678. 28:57to go to the now how did I get to go to
  679. 28:59Tibet when it was closed and this
  680. 29:01beautiful train is all booked two years
  681. 29:03in
  682. 29:04advance because I have a friend who's
  683. 29:07high up in the Communist party right so
  684. 29:10they can make doing business very
  685. 29:13easy now what's interesting about China
  686. 29:16so United States we have multiple
  687. 29:18governments too we have the federal
  688. 29:19government and then we have the state
  689. 29:21government and then we have the County
  690. 29:23government and then we have the city
  691. 29:24government so we've got all these we've
  692. 29:26got multiple governments too
  693. 29:28but here's the difference between the
  694. 29:30United States and
  695. 29:32China if you look at the difference
  696. 29:34between the federal government and the
  697. 29:36state government anywhere in the United
  698. 29:39States it's all the
  699. 29:41same right we know what the role of the
  700. 29:43governor is the governor in Washington
  701. 29:46has the same rules and and job as a
  702. 29:50governor of Texas or
  703. 29:53Michigan right it's always the same in
  704. 29:57China
  705. 29:59the difference between those two
  706. 30:00governments
  707. 30:01moves depending on where you are so if
  708. 30:05you do business in
  709. 30:07Beijing the Communist Party does is very
  710. 30:11involved in your business you have to
  711. 30:13work with the com through the Communist
  712. 30:15party with them very closely to do
  713. 30:18business in Beijing it's just they
  714. 30:20control most of the government functions
  715. 30:22in Beijing are focused on the Communist
  716. 30:25party if you go to
  717. 30:29um
  718. 30:31chungu the Communist part's involved but
  719. 30:34local government has a lot of
  720. 30:36power if you go to Tibet the Communist
  721. 30:40part is not very involved in the daily
  722. 30:42basis they're a semi-autonomous region
  723. 30:45right and so they do basically the only
  724. 30:48thing the Communist Party really is
  725. 30:50active in on a daily basis is security
  726. 30:53you know the Army and the police and
  727. 30:54things like that but otherwise the
  728. 30:56locals kind of run most of the stuff
  729. 30:59right so that line between the two
  730. 31:02governments moves depending on where you
  731. 31:05are in China so if you do business in
  732. 31:09China you need to find out about the
  733. 31:11area you're going to to see where that
  734. 31:14line
  735. 31:15is so real good example of this that
  736. 31:18that you can see in on the TV right now
  737. 31:22is if you look at all the problems that
  738. 31:24Hong Kong is having so Hong Kong is part
  739. 31:27of China
  740. 31:29and but the Chinese government when they
  741. 31:31took Hong Kong back from the from the
  742. 31:34British they said okay the Communist
  743. 31:37part is only going to do a little bit
  744. 31:40we're going to let their their
  745. 31:42government stay the same that it was
  746. 31:44supposed to be and everybody agreed and
  747. 31:46they said that's fine right and they
  748. 31:48said after like 50 years we'll start to
  749. 31:51move it down right so after 50 years the
  750. 31:54the the Communist Party will have a lot
  751. 31:56more influence than they do at the
  752. 31:57beginning everybody says okay that
  753. 31:59sounds like a good idea then the Chinese
  754. 32:03major Chinese Communist Party said let's
  755. 32:06start to move that
  756. 32:08line and that's what all the protests
  757. 32:10are about they're moving the line
  758. 32:12between the local and the federal
  759. 32:15government they're just moving it and so
  760. 32:17everybody knew that they were going to
  761. 32:18move it the protesters said you're
  762. 32:20moving it too fast we want you to slow
  763. 32:23down moving the line between local and
  764. 32:27so that's that's what that all is about
  765. 32:29if the if one would if they would agree
  766. 32:31on where the the governments the
  767. 32:33different the two governments exist
  768. 32:36everybody be fine but that's that's kind
  769. 32:38of weird Okay so there's some things in
  770. 32:40China that when you're doing business
  771. 32:42that you need to kind of be aware
  772. 32:48of so some strange Customs by Western
  773. 32:51standards by our state by by people in
  774. 32:53the United States these are some things
  775. 32:55about
  776. 32:56Chinese that you need to be ready for
  777. 32:59right it's kind of like remember I told
  778. 33:00you about the little old lady who met me
  779. 33:02in Tibet
  780. 33:04goes yeah you can see how that could be
  781. 33:07a problem couldn't you if you weren't
  782. 33:09ready for it right so here are some
  783. 33:11things that you're going to be
  784. 33:12interested in
  785. 33:14spitting spitting is more common than it
  786. 33:16is in other parts of the world you'll
  787. 33:18see people spit just everywhere uh
  788. 33:22there's kind of a reason for it's not
  789. 33:25considered so bad it the government's
  790. 33:27trying to tell people to stop spit but
  791. 33:29you will see people spit a lot more than
  792. 33:31normal one of the reasons you have to
  793. 33:34spit in China is because the uh the air
  794. 33:37can be pretty dirty and it just gets in
  795. 33:40the back of your throat and uh you you
  796. 33:44just need to do to spit and blow your
  797. 33:46nose more than you do in other parts of
  798. 33:48the world uh and so that you you will
  799. 33:51see people spit a lot more than you
  800. 33:53expected but okay not a big
  801. 33:56deal yeah the food
  802. 33:58yeah China has some yummy yummy food
  803. 34:01they also eat some foods that
  804. 34:04are
  805. 34:05oh hard to eat by Western standards
  806. 34:10right and what's kind of weird is if you
  807. 34:12go to a meal with somebody
  808. 34:15important one of the things that they do
  809. 34:18to honor you as a visitor is to get some
  810. 34:22even
  811. 34:24more nonwestern traditional food which
  812. 34:29is usually
  813. 34:30expensive so now you're eating a
  814. 34:32business
  815. 34:33meal and they'll bring out something
  816. 34:36that you know what it is or you don't
  817. 34:39know what it is neither way you want to
  818. 34:42eat that this it's GNA happen right
  819. 34:45right you should try all the food
  820. 34:46because it's really it tastes way better
  821. 34:48than you'd be you'd be amazed at how
  822. 34:50good yummy some of that stuff is it's
  823. 34:52not like American Chinese restaurants
  824. 34:54it's really good but anyway they will
  825. 34:57bring some stuff to you that you really
  826. 35:00don't want to eat so what do you do you
  827. 35:04go ew I don't don't do that that will be
  828. 35:07it will be very very offended if you do
  829. 35:09that but here's how you get around it
  830. 35:12and this works really really well you
  831. 35:15say oh that looks really good I've never
  832. 35:18had I've never tried this before my
  833. 35:20tummy is I've been traveling and my
  834. 35:23tummy is kind of upset I think that that
  835. 35:26would upset my tummy know uh can I try
  836. 35:28it later on because I've been traveling
  837. 35:30now if you've ever done much traveling
  838. 35:32you always get an upset tummy no matter
  839. 35:35what you are going to get Tummy problems
  840. 35:38when you travel to other parts of the
  841. 35:39world and you go to you go to hotels and
  842. 35:42they go oh our water's safe to drink it
  843. 35:44is not safe to drink right water all
  844. 35:47over the world is not safe to drink
  845. 35:49right but it's safe but it's still gonna
  846. 35:52make you sick they said no they should
  847. 35:55it won't so what happens is
  848. 35:58in our water we have little bugs we
  849. 36:02do even in Belle Washington there are
  850. 36:04little bugs in there and they don't
  851. 36:07bother you at all because you've
  852. 36:09consumed these bugs they're all in your
  853. 36:11body and they're not bothered your
  854. 36:13body's used to them right but then when
  855. 36:16you go to other parts of the world even
  856. 36:18other parts of the country go from go to
  857. 36:21go to to Florida drink their water oh my
  858. 36:24gosh when you drink their water you will
  859. 36:27notice
  860. 36:28all of a sudden you start getting tummy
  861. 36:30problems it's not making them sick
  862. 36:32because they have different bugs
  863. 36:33different flora and fauna in their
  864. 36:36water so when you drink their water even
  865. 36:40though they say it's going to be fun
  866. 36:41you're going to get a tummy egg right we
  867. 36:43said well how how do I drink water I
  868. 36:45drink bottled water that's I'm exclusive
  869. 36:48on bottle water even when I go to Sweden
  870. 36:51or Germany or Singapore bottled water
  871. 36:56right and that helps it doesn't stop the
  872. 37:00problem but it helps so if they traveled
  873. 37:04very much you say my tummy doesn't feel
  874. 37:06so good then they'll go okay that's a
  875. 37:10legitimate concern and they'll you can
  876. 37:13get away with it not eating some of the
  877. 37:15some of the foods and people say do they
  878. 37:17really have all these yeah they really
  879. 37:19have all these
  880. 37:21Foods yeah frog lungs cow stomach well
  881. 37:25we eat cow stomach in the United States
  882. 37:27sometimes fish eyes yeah you'll see
  883. 37:28people eat fish eyes remember Pig faces
  884. 37:31yeah now the next one oh my gosh bu
  885. 37:36you
  886. 37:38yeah here it says think of the worst
  887. 37:41alcohol you can possibly imagine then
  888. 37:43add some more alcohol to make it taste
  889. 37:45worse it is terrible stuff ba you this
  890. 37:50is one of their National
  891. 37:52drinks very few people from outside of
  892. 37:54China like it okay and here's what
  893. 37:58happens you go to a business meeting and
  894. 38:01they're going to like a dinner or lunch
  895. 38:04they're going to say and this happens to
  896. 38:06you it's going they're going to do this
  897. 38:07to you they're GNA say would you like
  898. 38:09some white
  899. 38:11wine and you
  900. 38:13say sure I'd love to try some Chinese
  901. 38:16white wine right so they get you some
  902. 38:18Chinese white wine it is not white wine
  903. 38:20it's baiju so then they will hor
  904. 38:24everybody gets a cup and then they'll
  905. 38:26take theirs and go
  906. 38:28and just drink it all at once and then
  907. 38:30they will look at
  908. 38:31you it's like your turn right so then
  909. 38:36you think it's white wine it is not
  910. 38:38white wine it's bu you it's terrible
  911. 38:42stuff right so then you go you and they
  912. 38:45laugh and laugh and laugh and they've
  913. 38:48really got you right so I had this
  914. 38:52happen to me more than once I'm not very
  915. 38:54smart I guess right and so this happened
  916. 38:57to me and I kind of
  917. 38:59saw this coming so I was in another
  918. 39:02having another business meal with some
  919. 39:04other people and I they said would you
  920. 39:05like some white wine and I
  921. 39:09go sure right and they brought out the
  922. 39:12bu and I knew what was coming up right
  923. 39:15so then they take the shot and they go
  924. 39:17and then they're looking at me and I
  925. 39:20took my shot I
  926. 39:21go oh that's yummy can I have some more
  927. 39:25oh that's really good and they go like
  928. 39:28it it ruined their joke and so I learned
  929. 39:31after that that whenever they do that
  930. 39:34joke you fall for it every single time
  931. 39:37just and they it that is unending source
  932. 39:39of entertainment for them when you're
  933. 39:42going there and it's kind of so you go
  934. 39:44all get to laugh about it and yeah it's
  935. 39:48uh it's
  936. 39:50really in it it's really uh tough if you
  937. 39:54want to you can go to local uh Chinese
  938. 39:56grocery stores and get some B you take
  939. 39:58it home and try it um before you go see
  940. 40:02what to expect but it's kind of
  941. 40:03interesting um also they have red wine
  942. 40:09now the red wine is red wine right so
  943. 40:12the white
  944. 40:13wine be careful right the red
  945. 40:17wine is red wine but it doesn't taste
  946. 40:21like Western red wine so they they do
  947. 40:24that on purpose even really expensive
  948. 40:26like Great Wall wine they they make some
  949. 40:29bottles of Great Wall that are really
  950. 40:31cheap but they make some really
  951. 40:32expensive ones it doesn't taste like
  952. 40:34Western wine it's okay but it's designed
  953. 40:37more for people who are Chinese to like
  954. 40:40it than Western people so it's okay
  955. 40:42you'll drink it it's not like you're
  956. 40:43gonna go it's terrible but it's just it
  957. 40:46just be ready it's not exactly what you
  958. 40:49expect now manners the Chinese are very
  959. 40:53very polite people right and if you're
  960. 40:55rude they're not going to tell you they
  961. 40:57just won't do business with you again so
  962. 41:00you got to be real real careful right um
  963. 41:04uh and be as polite and be overly polite
  964. 41:07you just really overdo it on the
  965. 41:09politeness and you'll probably be
  966. 41:13uh
  967. 41:14better okay English is tough right
  968. 41:18English is tougher even the the people
  969. 41:20who so my wife was an English teacher in
  970. 41:24China A lot of times I never knew what
  971. 41:26was coming out of her them today I still
  972. 41:28don't sometimes right because it's a
  973. 41:31tough
  974. 41:32language so um they learn a lot of
  975. 41:35people learn a little bit of Chinese a
  976. 41:37little bit of English but they learn it
  977. 41:39from somebody who doesn't speak
  978. 41:42English so you might have like somebody
  979. 41:45who speaks English teaches another
  980. 41:47person who teaches another person
  981. 41:48teaches another person who teaches your
  982. 41:50friend how to speak English and you can
  983. 41:53see some problems getting translated uh
  984. 41:56trans translators are a good idea yeah
  985. 41:59translators just get get one uh to help
  986. 42:02you out and that that's also sometimes
  987. 42:04they'll give you their own translator
  988. 42:06don't bring your own
  989. 42:08translator okay um lines in personal
  990. 42:12space yeah it's different than it was so
  991. 42:15I was there in the first time I was in
  992. 42:17China was like 2004 I think something
  993. 42:20like that anyway um and there was no
  994. 42:24personal space people just jumped in
  995. 42:25front lines and everybody the
  996. 42:28cars they have Lanes nobody looked at it
  997. 42:32right now I've been back fairly recently
  998. 42:35people stand in lines a little bit not
  999. 42:37that much but they still a little they
1000. 42:39kind of get the idea of what a line's
1001. 42:41supposed to be and the uh when you're
1002. 42:44driving on the roads the they use it as
  1003. 42:47a guide right as a suggestion they don't
1004. 42:50always follow the suggestions so my
1005. 42:52friend says would you like to drive and
1006. 42:54he like I will die they are very good
1007. 42:57drivers in China because they have to be
1008. 43:00in the United States we don't have to be
1009. 43:01good drivers because we follow the rules
1010. 43:03and you know that other guy's going to
1011. 43:05follow the rules pretty pretty sure and
1012. 43:07that's how we keep from getting wrecked
1013. 43:08they don't right so you have to be a
1014. 43:11real good driver there and I just said
1015. 43:13no way no way I'm I'm scared of this so
1016. 43:17um I went back to China with my wife a
  1017. 43:20couple years ago and there's a um I I
1018. 43:24don't know a lot of you have seen the
  1019. 43:26movie Avatar
1020. 43:27right and in the movie Avatar they have
1021. 43:29these floating mountains they really
  1022. 43:32exist I've been there they're not
1023. 43:33floating but they look like because
1024. 43:35there's there's fog on the or fog or
  1025. 43:38clouds at the bottom and it's like a
  1026. 43:40stick right they're
1027. 43:42beautiful and so I went to see this and
1028. 43:46it it was it was really profoundly
1029. 43:49beautiful but what they did was this is
1030. 43:51something good to know they have glass
1031. 43:55walkways around these mountains in
1032. 43:58between the two and you look straight
  1033. 44:00down and I'm you're talk you're looking
  1034. 44:03a long ways maybe three4 of a mile
1035. 44:07straight down right and so one thing
1036. 44:10that they like to do so just get ready
1037. 44:11for this is this this these Glass Walls
  1038. 44:15sometimes they will put a projector
1039. 44:17underneath there of the glass
1040. 44:20breaking yeah it wakes you up just be
1041. 44:23ready for that right so anyway I went
1042. 44:25went to to see these the city's called
1043. 44:28ja or something like that anyway I went
1044. 44:30to and walked through the mountains it
1045. 44:32was really really pretty but it started
1046. 44:33raining it was cold and so you can't
1047. 44:36take your your car there you have to get
1048. 44:37on a bus and so nobody wanted to stand
1049. 44:40out in the rain so they had one of those
1050. 44:42uh those sheds without the walls you
1051. 44:45know just like a top to keep the rain
1052. 44:46off of you and then they had pipes all
1053. 44:49the way through so to keep you standing
  1054. 44:52in line so I go there everybody's
1055. 44:54standing in line I'm going okay this is
1056. 44:56great the Bus shows up that line went
1057. 44:59away everybody crawled through those
1058. 45:02pipes and rushed the bus and I'm just
1059. 45:04standing there going huh right they just
1060. 45:08all just it just went they had had a
1061. 45:11line and then all a sudden there was no
1062. 45:12line everybody rushed the bus and I
1063. 45:15asked my wife I said I heard about this
1064. 45:17but did they is this common she says oh
1065. 45:20yeah it's common okay so the next time
1066. 45:24so I went to the front right and so the
1067. 45:26for the for the next bus and when I saw
  1068. 45:29the next bus I
1069. 45:31said and I ran out there to the bus and
1070. 45:34everybody's running behind me and
1071. 45:36they're trying to get on the bus but I
1072. 45:37held my arms out blocking them so I
1073. 45:40could get my family on the bus first see
  1074. 45:42when you're a foreigner you could do
1075. 45:43some things that the locals can't do
1076. 45:45it's so am blocking it so my family can
1077. 45:48get in then we all go on the bus but it
1078. 45:50just it just get ready for
  1079. 45:53it now bargaining
  1080. 45:57yeah yeah yeah
1081. 46:02um all my friends tell me that I'm going
1082. 46:06to pay more for everything than they
  1083. 46:08will because I look different and that's
  1084. 46:11true to a certain
1085. 46:14extent so what I would do is I would go
  1086. 46:18to a place and I have a one my friends
  1087. 46:21would buy something so sometimes I say I
1088. 46:23I look around and then I go okay then I
1089. 46:25go to my friend way down down back I
1090. 46:27said go get this right maybe even take a
1091. 46:30picture of it go buy this for me and
  1092. 46:32they could get me a better
1093. 46:33deal and it says here speak a little bit
  1094. 46:36of the language I don't agree with that
1095. 46:39I think you should act dumb as a fox
1096. 46:43uh kind of walk away and
1097. 46:47offer and uh I've been fairly successful
1098. 46:51but they will charge you different rates
1099. 46:53for if you go to a restaurant they will
  1100. 46:55charge you different rates they'll
1101. 46:57charge you different rate for hotel it's
  1102. 46:59they're not supposed
1103. 47:01to they do it just get
1104. 47:04ready okay now I like to act kind of
1105. 47:07poor yeah yeah and walk away the walk
  1106. 47:11away Works real well because they'll
1107. 47:13chase after you sometimes they will grab
1108. 47:15you just get ready they will grab your
1109. 47:17arm and pull you back into their stand
1110. 47:19it happens all the time you and people
1111. 47:22kind of a lot of Americans freak out
1112. 47:23about that it's just kind of what they
  1113. 47:25do yelling
  1114. 47:27now the
1115. 47:28Chinese when they talk quite often it's
  1116. 47:32loud right and it's loud for a couple
1117. 47:35reasons one is when you hear a foreign
  1118. 47:38language it usually sounds a little
  1119. 47:40louder it's just because you're not used
1120. 47:42to it so I was in Paris and I was on the
1121. 47:45subway I'm was talking to with my mom
1122. 47:47and I'm was talking to my mom in English
1123. 47:49everybody just looked at me it's like oh
1124. 47:53so then we shipped it to French and they
1125. 47:55all kind of forgot because it was
  1126. 47:57different it's just a different my
1127. 47:58French is terrible terrible but anyway I
1128. 48:01can I can get by in French okay but then
1129. 48:05also in China people yell at each other
  1130. 48:08it's and it doesn't mean that they're
1131. 48:09fighting they can be very good friends
1132. 48:10and they can yell at each other so when
  1133. 48:12I first went to
1134. 48:14Shanghai uh my guide said listen when
1135. 48:17you hear people yelling at each other
  1136. 48:19they're not fighting just that they're
1137. 48:22not fighting I said well then how do you
  1138. 48:23tell when they're they're mad they said
1139. 48:25it sounds like nuclear war and I did see
1140. 48:28two people get in a fight and it sounded
1141. 48:31like nuclear war right so they just
  1142. 48:34they're it's kind of interesting so I
1143. 48:36have a friend and she teaches at bayw
1144. 48:39which is Beijing Foreign Studies
  1145. 48:40University it's a very good school in
1146. 48:42Beijing and she teaches English and her
1147. 48:45English is perfect spot on but when you
1148. 48:48talk to her she talks like this she's
1149. 48:51very clear and very slow and she's
1150. 48:54usually kind of quiet and so I asked her
1151. 48:57I said how do you say this in Chinese
1152. 48:59and she says let me think you it's like
1153. 49:03whoa whoa what just happen she says well
1154. 49:05that's how you say that right well that
1155. 49:08was awfully so she's so unaggressive and
1156. 49:11then she came out with that she says
1157. 49:12when you say this you're supposed to be
1158. 49:14kind of aggressive and she was a freak M
1159. 49:16and I travel with her all over China and
  1160. 49:20I would notice that sometimes she'd
  1161. 49:21speak Chinese normal and sometimes I'm
1162. 49:23like going man you're mad at it she says
  1163. 49:25no that's how you're supposed to say
1164. 49:26that that sort of thing so just kind of
1165. 49:28get get ready for it it's it's kind of
1166. 49:31fun and have some fun you're going to
1167. 49:33have a lot of fun there's so much stuff
1168. 49:35to do and see and the people are really
  1169. 49:38beautiful
1170. 49:39people okay now there's some things that
1171. 49:42are a little different than you might
1172. 49:44expect and one of them is called the
  1173. 49:48swasa so here's a
1174. 49:51swastika I bet you most people have seen
1175. 49:53this swastika right this is
  1176. 49:57white
  1177. 49:58supremist uh
1178. 50:00Nazis uh right-wing people this is one
1179. 50:03of their symbols this is Hitler during
1180. 50:07World War II had the swastika right and
1181. 50:10I had a former uh Chinese student in my
  1182. 50:13belie business 101 class and he wore a
  1183. 50:17swasa to class every
1184. 50:20day kind of interesting now I knew about
1185. 50:23the swasa but when you first see him you
  1186. 50:26go wow
  1187. 50:27a Nazi Chinese person he wasn't a Nazi
1188. 50:30Chinese person this guy is not a Nazi
1189. 50:34right you will see swastikas all over
1190. 50:36the place and the farther west you go in
1191. 50:40China the more you see the the swasti
  1192. 50:43now the
1193. 50:44swasa in Chinese culture is a sign of
1194. 50:47peace and love and harmony it's the
1195. 50:51exact opposite of what it means in the
1196. 50:53west right and some people say well it's
1197. 50:56turn around differently no it's not they
1198. 50:58put it all different ways you're going
1199. 51:00to see swas all over the place and it's
1200. 51:02kind of fun especially when you start to
1201. 51:04go um farther west you're just looking
1202. 51:06for them because they are everywhere
  1203. 51:08you're just see it's a good luck symbol
  1204. 51:09it's a it's it's so no this is not a
  1205. 51:12Nazi
1206. 51:14Buddha yeah because Buddhism is about as
1207. 51:17opposite as you can get from from
  1208. 51:20national
1209. 51:21socialism so um you you'll see it and
1210. 51:24just kind of get know I I was in uh in
1211. 51:27Chongqing China which we pronounce it
  1212. 51:29Chongqing Chongqing
  1213. 51:31anyway I was there and I was shopping
1214. 51:35and I saw this really cool coffee mug in
  1215. 51:39the shape of a
1216. 51:40chicken now if you notice anything if
1217. 51:42you look at a map of China it kind of
1218. 51:45looks like a chicken and a lot of times
1219. 51:48when people uh I talk to people who are
1220. 51:50from China I said where are you from in
1221. 51:52China and they say well you know the
  1222. 51:54chicken's neck
1223. 51:56that's be well above the chicken's neck
1224. 51:58by the beak it's like you know where the
1225. 52:00chicken's butt is they use the chicken
1226. 52:03analogy right so they had this really
1227. 52:05cool coffee cup in the shape of a
1228. 52:06chicken and it had a swastika on
  1229. 52:10it now I thought to myself man that's a
1230. 52:13cool coffee cup and then I also thought
1231. 52:16about it should somebody with this face
1232. 52:20have a coffee cup with a swastika on it
1233. 52:24what does that say what's your first
1234. 52:27guess if somebody with this face has a
1235. 52:31swastika uh on tattoo or something like
1236. 52:34yeah and so I didn't get it which was
  1237. 52:38pretty smart
  1238. 52:44probably
  1239. 52:46okay
1240. 52:49down yeah now I had some had a real
  1241. 52:53interesting experience when I was in
  1242. 52:54Chongqing
1243. 52:56I went to a restaurant and I had Hot Pot
1244. 52:58first time I've ever had Hot Pot it was
1245. 53:01wonderful it was really really good and
1246. 53:04if you've never had Hot Pot you need to
1247. 53:06there's a real good restaurant in Belle
1248. 53:07called the goat you should go there I
1249. 53:09love Hot Pot anyway I never had hot pot
1250. 53:12and so I go to this restaurant which was
  1251. 53:14a fairly nice
1252. 53:16restaurant right and they give hot pot
1253. 53:20and I'm eating hot pot I'm like going oh
  1254. 53:22yeah I can eat this all day long I see a
  1255. 53:25guy next to me
1256. 53:27he takes his Chopsticks grabs a piece of
1257. 53:30meat puts meat in his mouth goes like
  1258. 53:33this
1259. 53:34goes so he's getting all the meat off
  1260. 53:36the
1261. 53:37bone then he swallows the meat guess
1262. 53:40what he did with the
  1263. 53:43bone he
1264. 53:45goes on the floor I'm sitting there and
  1265. 53:48I'm
1266. 53:49going that dude just spit Bones on the
1267. 53:54floor right I'm like going holy cow
  1268. 53:58because you don't expect that right
  1269. 53:59maybe if it's a a bad restaurant or
1270. 54:02something no this is a nice restaurant
1271. 54:04he's spitting Bones on the floor I look
1272. 54:06around I see other people spitting Bones
1273. 54:08on the floor I'm not going people are
1274. 54:11spitting Bones on the floor so you know
  1275. 54:13what I did don't you I spit my bones on
1276. 54:15the floor too now uh it's they have a
1277. 54:19dude whose job and he has a push push
1278. 54:23mop and all he does all day long is go
1279. 54:25through the restaurant and sweep up
1280. 54:27Bones on the floor right that's all he
1281. 54:30does right uh it's kind of like in some
1282. 54:32American restaurants you can go to some
1283. 54:34American restaurants and they give you
  1284. 54:35peanuts and you're supposed to take
1285. 54:36peanut shelves and throw them on the
1286. 54:37ground same thing but it's bones and
1287. 54:40they would spit them on the
1288. 54:42floor it was really I did not expect
1289. 54:45that I've had students come to me and
  1290. 54:47they said Andy I'm from China we don't
1291. 54:51spit Bones on the floor and I usually
1292. 54:54say where in China are you from
1293. 54:56and they always say Shanghai or Beijing
1294. 55:00it's usually Beijing or some place like
  1295. 55:02that and I go this wasn't shangai or
1296. 55:05Beijing this was in Chongqing which if
1297. 55:07you look on the the chicken it's towards
1298. 55:09the back of the chicken it's a long way
1299. 55:11from Beijing are people different in the
  1300. 55:14United States in different
1301. 55:15parts oh yeah you want a cultural shock
1302. 55:19go to Texas you want a bigger shock go
  1303. 55:22to
1304. 55:23Alabama right you they are nothing they
1305. 55:26their cultures are so different than
1306. 55:28than it is up here in the Pacific
1307. 55:30Northwest right so just because do they
1308. 55:34do some really weird stuff do they eat
1309. 55:35some weird foods down south posum oh my
1310. 55:40gosh yeah they they eat some chitlins I
1311. 55:45don't never need to eat chitlins I if
1312. 55:47you don't know what it is Google it
1313. 55:48you'll see yeah but and so they just do
  1314. 55:53they they're different and different
1315. 55:55parts of China are different so a lot of
  1316. 55:57people say well we're all the same we're
  1317. 55:59not all the same they're they're very
1318. 56:00different you go to East Coast and West
1319. 56:02Coast you go to East part of China and
1320. 56:04the West part of China they are very
  1321. 56:06different so I've been in China for a
1322. 56:09while and I decided to go to
1323. 56:13KFC in Shanghai so they had a KFC in
1324. 56:17Shanghai KFC we all know KFC Kentucky
1325. 56:21Fried Chicken that's what KFC stands for
1326. 56:25Kentucky Fried Chicken so I'd been in
1327. 56:29China for a while for like a month at
1328. 56:31this time and I wanted some American
1329. 56:34food you know what it's like you you
1330. 56:35want food from home once a while even
1331. 56:37though the Chinese food is super yummy
1332. 56:39and I mean real good I still wanted some
  1333. 56:42American
  1334. 56:44food
  1335. 56:45so I go to the KFC and I say I'd like
  1336. 56:49some fried
1337. 56:50chicken because they looked at me and
  1338. 56:52they
1339. 56:52said what would you like in English and
  1340. 56:55so I figured
1341. 56:57take talk to them and I'd like some
1342. 56:58fried chicken and they looked at me like
  1343. 57:00I was on
1344. 57:02drugs and I they said they said we don't
  1345. 57:05have fried chicken and I
  1346. 57:08thought okay it's a language issue right
  1347. 57:11because it's Kentucky Fried Chicken
1348. 57:13they've got to have Fried Chicken so I
  1349. 57:14asked my friend who's Chinese I said
1350. 57:16would you tell them I'd like to have
1351. 57:17some fried chicken please maybe a couple
1352. 57:20drumsticks and he talks to them for a
1353. 57:23little bit in Chinese he turns to me he
1354. 57:24says they don't have any Fried Chicken
  1355. 57:26here I go they don't have fried chicken
1356. 57:30at Kentucky Fried Chicken he says nope
  1357. 57:33no fried chicken I
1358. 57:36said if they don't have fried chicken at
1359. 57:40Kentucky Fried Chicken what do they have
1360. 57:45so they bring out this little uh little
1361. 57:48picture menu you know the type where you
1362. 57:51just go uh uh uh you know you don't have
1363. 57:54to don't anything you just point and
  1364. 57:56then that's what you get so I ordered a
1365. 57:58chicken sandwich right we all know what
  1366. 58:01a chicken sandwich is right it's a
  1367. 58:03chicken sandwich we've all had it it's
  1368. 58:05chicken that's breaded deep fried they
1369. 58:09put it on a bun with a little mayonnaise
1370. 58:12and a piece of lettuce and Away you go
  1371. 58:14we've all eaten the
1372. 58:16sandwich no you haven't because this is
  1373. 58:19what I
  1374. 58:21got you'll notice it is a chicken
  1375. 58:24sandwich yep it's it's chicken sandwich
  1376. 58:27but it also had
1377. 58:29corn carrots and lime of beans in the
1378. 58:35sandwich now it was okay I mean it
1379. 58:39tasted like a chicken sandwich with corn
1380. 58:41carrots and lime beans in it right it
  1381. 58:43was it was
  1382. 58:44fine but it sure wasn't what I was
1383. 58:46expecting right you know you get an an
1384. 58:49idea of what you're supposed to get at a
1385. 58:51place when you order chicken sandwich
1386. 58:52you don't expect lime of beans in it I
1387. 58:54bet you nobody listening to this
1388. 58:57video has ever had a chicken sandwich
1389. 59:00with lime of beans in the united served
  1390. 59:04at a restaurant in the United States I
1391. 59:06can I can guarantee no restaurant in the
1392. 59:09United States serves Li of beans in
  1393. 59:11their chicken
  1394. 59:12sandwiches it wasn't bad but it was a
  1395. 59:15little
  1396. 59:19different
1397. 59:21now Pizza Hut yeah I went to Pizza Hut
  1398. 59:25right
1399. 59:26the Pizza Huts in China are not Huts
1400. 59:29there is no Hut in Pizza Hut in China
1401. 59:33they are they should call them Pizza
1402. 59:35palaces because this is what they look
1403. 59:40like does that look like a Hut to you
1404. 59:45whoops does that look like a Hut to you
  1405. 59:48it doesn't to me either there's no Huts
1406. 59:51but there are some differences but
  1407. 59:53besides they have a beautiful building
1408. 59:55there's some differ differ and I'll tell
1409. 59:56you that one later hey thanks a lot for
  1410. 59:58coming have a good day
