  1. 0:00What if I told you that there was a
  2. 0:01player nobody wanted who still ended up
  3. 0:03dominating MLB? A player so overlooked
  4. 0:06that many teams saw him as a future bust
  5. 0:08and not worth signing, despite being a
  6. 0:10superstar in Japan. Yes, that player is
  7. 0:13Munetaka Murakami, who after signing
  8. 0:15with the White Sox has shattered MLB
  9. 0:17records and almost single-handedly
  10. 0:19carried the team to a winning record.
  11. 0:21But how did one of the greatest power
  12. 0:23hitters in Japanese history manage to
  13. 0:24fly under the radar of every other MLB
  14. 0:27team? Well, to find out, we first need
  15. 0:29to go back to Japan in 2021. It's
  16. 0:32December 15th and Murakami has just won
  17. 0:35MVP at the highest level of Japanese
  18. 0:37baseball at just 21 years old. He had
  19. 0:39crushed a league-best 39 home runs,
  20. 0:42establishing himself as one of the
  21. 0:43brightest young stars in the country.
  22. 0:45But his success hadn't come out of
  23. 0:47nowhere. You see, ever since he was 5
  24. 0:50years old, Murakami had been enrolled in
  25. 0:52private baseball academies. And as he
  26. 0:54grew older, he became an imposing figure
  27. 0:56on the field, standing at 6'2" and
  28. 0:59weighing over 200 lb. As a result, he
  29. 1:02developed unbelievable power, launching
  30. 1:0452 home runs throughout high school. So,
  31. 1:06[music] by the time he started playing
  32. 1:08professionally, nobody was too surprised
  33. 1:10by his production at the plate. [music]
  34. 1:11However, there was one major problem
  35. 1:14with his game. As is typical with many
  36. 1:16power hitters, Murakami struggled to
  37. 1:18make consistent contact, [music] leading
  38. 1:20to a concerningly high amount of
  39. 1:21strikeouts. In fact, in 2019, he set the
  40. 1:24record for the most strikeouts by a
  41. 1:26Japanese player in history. So, even
  42. 1:28though he drew a lot of walks, scouts
  43. 1:30grew that concerned his tendency to
  44. 1:32swing and miss would eventually catch up
  45. 1:33to him. Though, in 2022, he would make
  46. 1:36all of those doubts disappear, at least
  47. 1:38for the time being. To start the season,
  48. 1:40Murakami exceeded even the highest of
  49. 1:42expectations. In July, he became the
  50. 1:45first player in league history to hit a
  51. 1:47home run in five straight plate
  52. 1:48appearances. And [music] by the end of
  53. 1:50August, he had racked up 50 home runs on
  54. 1:52the year. Not to mention, he was drawing
  55. 1:54more walks and striking out less than
  56. 1:56ever before. Murakami was dominant in
  57. 1:59every aspect at the plate with one of
  58. 2:01his teammates saying [music] this, "He's
  59. 2:02a special human being and everything you
  60. 2:04want in a superstar. He's still so young
  61. 2:07and he's taken the whole country by
  62. 2:08storm. People are waiting at hotels just
  63. 2:10to get a glimpse of him. It's like
  64. 2:12playing with a rock star." On the final
  65. 2:14day of the season, Murakami hit his 56th
  66. 2:16home run breaking the record for the
  67. 2:18most ever in Japan's history. He went on
  68. 2:21to win the triple crown and
  69. 2:22unsurprisingly his second MVP in a row.
  70. 2:25So, by this point Murakami was
  71. 2:27undoubtedly a superstar in his home
  72. 2:29country, but he was about to introduce
  73. 2:31himself to the rest of the world. But
  74. 2:33first, I want to give a quick thanks to
  75. 2:35the sponsor of today's video, Grounds.
  76. 2:37Lately, I've been trying to take my
  77. 2:39health a little bit more seriously and
  78. 2:40something that's always been difficult
  79. 2:42for me is consistently getting the
  80. 2:43vitamins and minerals I need and that's
  81. 2:45why I like Grounds gummies, which are
  82. 2:47basically a multivitamin, prebiotic, and
  83. 2:49greens gummy all packed into one. They
  84. 2:51have more than 20 vitamins and minerals
  85. 2:52along with nutrient-dense whole foods
  86. 2:54come in these little snack packs, which
  87. 2:56I like a lot more than just taking a
  88. 2:57pill or something because unlike most
  89. 2:59supplements, these actually taste really
  90. 3:01good and I actually look forward to
  91. 3:03eating them every day. Now, personally,
  92. 3:05I went for the low-sugar option, but
  93. 3:06they also have a sugar-free version as
  94. 3:08well. But either way, it's just nice
  95. 3:10knowing that I'm getting so many good
  96. 3:11ingredients with benefits for my gut
  97. 3:13health, immunity, recovery, and more.
  98. 3:15And you can be confident in that because
  99. 3:16over 35,000 research publications
  100. 3:18support the ingredients in Grounds. Not
  101. 3:20to mention, they're also nut-free,
  102. 3:22dairy-free, gluten-free, and contain no
  103. 3:24synthetic sweeteners or dyes. So, if you
  104. 3:26want an easy way to stay on top of your
  105. 3:28health, go to the link in the
  106. 3:29description to get up to 52% off
  107. 3:31Grounds. In 2023, Murakami took the
  108. 3:34field for Japan in the World Baseball
  109. 3:36Classic and despite a rough start to the
  110. 3:39tournament, he would end up delivering
  111. 3:40when it mattered the most. In the
  112. 3:42semifinals against Mexico, Japan would
  113. 3:44enter the bottom of the ninth inning
  114. 3:46trailing by one and after a lead-off
  115. 3:48double from Shohei Ohtani followed by a
  116. 3:50walk, the game was suddenly in the hands
  117. 3:52of Murakami, who in his first four at
  118. 3:54bats had struck out three times, meaning
  119. 3:57that this was his chance to redeem
  120. 3:58himself. And sure enough, he finally
  121. 4:00connected, [music]
  122. 4:01hitting a walk-off double, sending Japan
  123. 4:03to the championship for the first time
  124. 4:05in 14 years. But he wasn't done quite
  125. 4:08yet. [music] In the final, he hit a
  126. 4:10game-tying home run as Japan went on to
  127. 4:12defeat the United States and win the
  128. 4:14World Baseball Classic. At that moment,
  129. 4:16Murakami was on top of the world, and
  130. 4:18with only a few years left before he
  131. 4:20could make the jump to MLB, a massive
  132. 4:22payday seemed inevitable, or at least
  133. 4:25that's what everyone thought.
  134. 4:27Over the next few years, Murakami would
  135. 4:29suffer multiple injuries which stunted
  136. 4:31his performance. First a fractured toe,
  137. 4:33then an elbow surgery, and finally an
  138. 4:35oblique injury in 2025, which caused him
  139. 4:38to miss a significant amount of games.
  140. 4:40However, while these injuries were
  141. 4:42definitely concerning, the biggest
  142. 4:44question was still his approach at the
  143. 4:45plate. His strikeout rate remained
  144. 4:47extremely high in a league where
  145. 4:49pitching velocity is much lower on
  146. 4:51average compared to MLB. And as one
  147. 4:53sports writer pointed out, his contact
  148. 4:55rate tanks against fastballs 93 mph and
  149. 4:58above. And of the 390,173
  150. 5:01fastballs thrown in MLB this year, 62.8%
  151. 5:04of them were at least 93 mph. To make
  152. 5:07things worse, Japanese hitters already
  153. 5:09had a long history of seeing their
  154. 5:11strikeout rates rise after making the
  155. 5:13jump to MLB. So, unfortunately, when
  156. 5:16Murakami was finally posted to MLB in
  157. 5:18November of 2025, he was almost entirely
  158. 5:21overlooked. However, there was one team
  159. 5:24that was still willing to give him a
  160. 5:25chance. On December 21st, just one day
  161. 5:28before his signing window closed,
  162. 5:30Murakami struck a deal with the Chicago
  163. 5:32White Sox, a team that had lost over 100
  164. 5:34games in three straight seasons and were
  165. 5:36not in the market to spend tons of
  166. 5:38money. But with the doubts surrounding
  167. 5:40Murakami, they were able to sign him for
  168. 5:42just $34 million over two years, a deal
  169. 5:45which gave the White Sox enormous upside
  170. 5:47with not much risk. And it wouldn't take
  171. 5:49long for the rest of baseball to realize
  172. 5:51what they had missed out on. He made his
  173. 5:53debut on opening day 2026, starting at
  174. 5:56first base. And in just his second at
  175. 5:58bat, he would connect for his first hit,
  176. 6:00a solo home run. But this was only the
  177. 6:03beginning. In fact, Murakami would end
  178. 6:05up homering in each of his first three
  179. 6:07games, becoming the first White Sox
  180. 6:09player in history to do so. Nonetheless,
  181. 6:11Murakami wasn't satisfied, especially
  182. 6:14considering the White Sox had lost all
  183. 6:16three of those games. You see, his
  184. 6:18number one priority was winning. Having
  185. 6:20said this after his first home run, "I'm
  186. 6:22happy I was able to take the first step
  187. 6:24as a major league baseball player, but
  188. 6:26at the end of the day, we lost the game.
  189. 6:28This is what I'm mostly disappointed
  190. 6:30about." Now, of course, he couldn't
  191. 6:32single-handedly carry the White Sox to
  192. 6:34victory every single night, but his
  193. 6:36energy, intensity, and winning mindset
  194. 6:38had an immediate impact on the team and
  195. 6:40its fan base. And before long, he was
  196. 6:42making history once again. In April, he
  197. 6:45tied the MLB record by hitting a home
  198. 6:47run in five straight games as a rookie.
  199. 6:49And by the beginning of May, he led the
  200. 6:51entire league with 13 home runs. But
  201. 6:55maybe even more impressively, all of his
  202. 6:57hits to that point had either been
  203. 6:58singles or home runs. In fact, when he
  204. 7:00hit his 14th, he set the MLB record for
  205. 7:03the most home runs to start a career
  206. 7:04without a double or triple. Though, on
  207. 7:06May 4th, this streak would eventually
  208. 7:08come to an end as he legged out a double
  209. 7:10en route to a 6-0 victory. By this
  210. 7:13point, teams were starting to realize
  211. 7:15that they had made a huge mistake
  212. 7:16passing on Murakami. Because as one
  213. 7:19sports writer pointed out on May 8th, he
  214. 7:21is the only player in MLB to hit
  215. 7:23multiple home runs off pitches 98 mph or
  216. 7:26above. And his nine home runs off hard
  217. 7:28pitches, fastballs, sinkers, cutters,
  218. 7:30are the most in the game as well. So,
  219. 7:32not only had Murakami adapted to MLB
  220. 7:35pitching, he was one of the best hitters
  221. 7:36in baseball against high velocities, a
  222. 7:39stat which nobody could have predicted
  223. 7:41before the season began. But this wasn't
  224. 7:43the only part of his game that had been
  225. 7:45a pleasant surprise for the White Sox.
  226. 7:47In Japan, he had spent most of his time
  227. 7:49at third base with below average stats
  228. 7:51on defense. But, after moving to first
  229. 7:53base to start the season, he had made
  230. 7:55multiple incredible plays in just his
  231. 7:57first few weeks. So, at this point, it
  232. 8:00seemed like Murakami's goal was to prove
  233. 8:02every doubter completely wrong. And, his
  234. 8:04production at the plate somehow
  235. 8:06continued to reach new heights. On May
  236. 8:0816th, he recorded his first multi-home
  237. 8:10run game against the Cubs. And, around a
  238. 8:13week later, he became the first rookie
  239. 8:15in history to hit 20 home runs before
  240. 8:17June. For the month, Murakami blasted
  241. 8:19eight home runs while posting a 937 OPS,
  242. 8:23earning him Rookie of the Month. But,
  243. 8:25despite his historic start to the
  244. 8:26season, there were reasons to believe
  245. 8:28that he would eventually come down to
  246. 8:30Earth. While he continued to draw walks
  247. 8:32extremely often, he was striking out
  248. 8:34even more than expected in around 33% of
  249. 8:37his plate appearances, which, in part,
  250. 8:39was due to his swing-and-miss rate,
  251. 8:41which ranked among the worst in all of
  252. 8:43baseball. But, these concerns turned out
  253. 8:45to be the least of his worries, as
  254. 8:46Murakami's revenge tour would soon come
  255. 8:48to a sudden halt. On May 30th, Murakami
  256. 8:51appeared to be in pain after a hard
  257. 8:53sprint to beat out a double play. And,
  258. 8:55after a visit from the team's trainer,
  259. 8:57he would immediately exit the game
  260. 8:59before being placed on the injured list
  261. 9:01due to a sprained hamstring. This was a
  262. 9:03devastating blow for Murakami, as he'd
  263. 9:05be out for 4 to 6 weeks, likely killing
  264. 9:08any chances of winning Rookie of the
  265. 9:09Year. Nonetheless, in just over 2
  266. 9:11months, Murakami had already left a
  267. 9:13massive mark on his team and baseball
  268. 9:15itself.
  269. 9:24Before he made his debut, the White Sox
  270. 9:26were dead in the water, having lost over
  271. 9:28100 games for 3 years in a row. But,
  272. 9:31following his arrival, they've
  273. 9:32completely turned things around, leading
  274. 9:34the American League Central nearly
  275. 9:36halfway through the season. Now, of
  276. 9:37course, this is not entirely due to
  277. 9:39Murakami, but there's no denying the
  278. 9:41impact he's had because outside of his
  279. 9:44insane numbers, he's boosted attendance
  280. 9:46and jersey sales and become the face of
  281. 9:48a team that has a chance to contend for
  282. 9:50the first time in years. So, for now,
  283. 9:52it's safe to say that Murakami has
  284. 9:54proved everyone wrong. And at just 26
  285. 9:57years old, his story is far from over.
