- 0:04anformational video by safe sharth.
- 0:10So to start off, what are vitamins?
- 0:12Vitamins make up a part of our diet
- 0:15called micronutrients. So our diet is
- 0:17composed of macro and micronutrients.
- 0:21Macronutrients include your fats, your
- 0:24carbs, and your proteins. And then your
- 0:27micronutrients include your vitamins and
- 0:30your minerals. So these are things like
- 0:33um vitamins A, B, C, as well as minerals
- 0:37such as sodium and magnesium.
- 0:41So vitamin B12 has quite a few functions
- 0:43in your body. It can help with your
- 0:45heart, your nervous system, your brain,
- 0:48your blood, and it can even help
- 0:50preventing cancer. Some symptoms of
- 0:53deficiencies will include headaches,
- 0:55indigestion, feeling fatigued or tired,
- 0:59and heart palpitations.
- 1:02So, there's quite a few reasons as to
- 1:04why someone might be deficient in B12.
- 1:07One of the more common causes will be
- 1:08through diet and this will include such
- 1:11as following a vegetarian diet or a
- 1:13vegan diet. And then some of the other
- 1:15causes include medications such as
- 1:18metformin
- 1:20um hormone replacement therapy and then
- 1:23could also be from surgery which is kind
- 1:25of any surgery which removes part of the
- 1:27gut because that is where it's absorbed
- 1:29and then some medical conditions such as
- 1:31Crohn's and celiac disease.
- 1:35So what can we do about vitamin B12
- 1:37deficiency? So, one of the main things
- 1:39is to try and improve our diet and have
- 1:42a more balanced diet. So, this can
- 1:44include things like having a bit more
- 1:46meat, a bit more fish, um including a
- 1:49bit more dairy in your diet as well. But
- 1:52if you do, if you are found to be
- 1:55deficient in B12, an alternative could
- 1:57be supplementation. And this can include
- 1:59having regular injections
- 2:01uh of something called hydroxycobalamin,
- 2:04which is uh essentially just a fancy
- 2:06word for vitamin B12.
- 2:08So, moving on to vitamin D. Most people
- 2:11in the UK will be deficient with vitamin
- 2:13D. Vitamin D is important for things
- 2:15like bone health, your heart health, and
- 2:17it can even help with preventing cancer
- 2:19and lowering blood pressure. The main
- 2:22symptoms of deficiencies will include
- 2:24bone pains, breaking your bones more a
- 2:26bit more easily, and in children, we
- 2:29tend to see some uh bone deformities.
- 2:33So, why would someone be deficient in
- 2:35vitamin D? One of the more common causes
- 2:37will be through exposure to sunlight or
- 2:40lack thereof. And then there could also
- 2:43be some medical conditions similarly to
- 2:45vitamin B12 such as Crohn's and celiac
- 2:47disease. If you do have darker skin,
- 2:50that could also affect how much sunlight
- 2:52you absorb and therefore how much
- 2:54vitamin D your body can make. And then
- 2:57also through diet. So things like
- 2:58vegetarian, vegan, um, and also if you
- 3:01suffer from an eating disorder, this can
- 3:04lead to a vitamin D deficiency.
- 3:06So what can we do about vitamin D
- 3:08deficiency? Now our bodies can make
- 3:10vitamin D from sunlight. So ensuring
- 3:13that we get enough exposure to sunlight
- 3:15will be beneficial in making sure that
- 3:18we have adequate levels of vitamin D.
- 3:20Other sources of vitamin D will include
- 3:22things like oily fish like salmon and
- 3:24sardines, but also meat and dairy.
- 3:28I hope this shortformational video was
- 3:30of benefit to you. If you would like
- 3:32more information, then you can visit the
- 3:34NHS website. However, you could also
- 3:37book an appointment with the GP if you
- 3:38would like to talk to a healthcare
- 3:40professional.
