- 0:00I always said I was into theater, but I
- 0:02did a [music] part of me did want to try
- 0:03this out. Just didn't have the
- 0:04confidence to say it. I think a few
- 0:06years ago I told my mom. Um my [music]
- 0:09mom kept asking like are you going to
- 0:11say yes or um I kept going back and
- 0:14forth like what if um [music]
- 0:17one of the things was like my body type
- 0:18or the the fact that I don't know how to
- 0:21speak. I mean I do speak malam but I
- 0:23don't have the careless slang of someone
- 0:25who's
- 0:26>> one of the [music] things about being an
- 0:28actor's u legendary actor's daughter or
- 0:31son or whatever is the fact that uh you
- 0:34are going to be under a microscope
- 0:36whatever you do
- 0:37>> I don't I don't look at the comments and
- 0:40also um yeah of course you have that
- 0:47>> and did you ask him about what it was
- 0:49like to face the camera or any such
- 0:51suggestions [music]
- 0:52or did you ask your father?
- 0:54>> Yeah,
- 0:54>> I asked uh I asked my brother. He said
- 0:56just [music] go have fun. And my dad, he
- 1:00he's not he he he said this is your own
- 1:02journey like you
- 1:05>> which was more difficult, the acting
- 1:06part or the malaram part.
- 1:07>> The malaram.
- 1:08>> Yeah. [laughter]
- 1:09>> Yeah.
- 1:10>> I was so [music] unfit. And that's
- 1:12another thing. I think there's a
- 1:13difference between fitness and weight.
- 1:16Uh you can be 98 kgs [music] but you can
- 1:19be really fit. Um but I was almost 100
- 1:21kgs and I was struggling [music] like
- 1:24climbing stairs. I would be huffing and
- 1:26puffing and my friends will be like
- 1:28[laughter] why are you huffing and I
- 1:30just thought I would try [music]
- 1:31something new right
- 1:36holidays
- 1:38GT holidays GT holidays India's number
- 1:42one travel brand
- 1:52SAVINGS BLAST COLLECTION Hello visa.
- 1:56>> Hello.
- 1:56>> How are you?
- 1:57>> Good. How are you?
- 1:58>> I'm good, thanks. So your tokam into
- 2:01movies
- 2:02>> is happening with tokam.
- 2:03>> Yes.
- 2:04>> And I can't resist making that that bad
- 2:06joke because it's like it's so it lends
- 2:08itself to it's just there.
- 2:09>> It's just there. So uh
- 2:11>> what age did you realize that
- 2:15you are this creative person because
- 2:19you're a painter, you write poetry, you
- 2:22publish a book of poems. Yeah. Uh what
- 2:25age did you realize like like these are
- 2:27all the things that that I
- 2:29>> um I think I've always been creative
- 2:32like um always used to draw and paint. I
- 2:36used to cut my hair and stick it on um
- 2:39[laughter] like stick figures.
- 2:40>> Wow.
- 2:41>> Exactly.
- 2:42>> Yeah. Um and yeah, I've always been into
- 2:46the arts and all of that. I was never a
- 2:49maths or scientific
- 2:53person. Um I enjoyed chemistry but other
- 2:56than that I wasn't really
- 2:59I don't know. Yeah.
- 3:00>> Okay. [laughter]
- 3:02But um yeah, I've always been.
- 3:05>> And and at what age did you at what
- 3:08point in life rather maybe difficult to
- 3:10remember the age did you realize that
- 3:13your dad is not just a dad but he's
- 3:16someone who's kind of public property uh
- 3:19that you know because at at that
- 3:20realization when did that happen? So I
- 3:23honestly there was no realization like
- 3:26that cuz I just grew up like that,
- 3:28right? So I didn't know anything
- 3:30different. So that was just how it was.
- 3:34>> But even when you were studying in UTI
- 3:36and other things, weren't there other
- 3:38people who kind of would ask you about
- 3:40him or something like that?
- 3:42>> Yes and no. because um the the the
- 3:46school that I went to, it was an
- 3:47international school and they weren't
- 3:50really they didn't really know about I
- 3:53mean they they had a vague idea that my
- 3:56dad was in film and all of that but it
- 3:59was never um I think more the staff
- 4:02would ask oh how's your dad doing things
- 4:05like that but with the students there
- 4:07was never um I didn't feel any different
- 4:09or anything like that it was
- 4:11>> oh nice
- 4:11>> yeah so the
- 4:12>> it was very casual and chill. So it's
- 4:15like it was it was something that you
- 4:17never felt special or different or
- 4:18something like that.
- 4:19>> Yeah. Like I remember one time though um
- 4:22uh we were so every weekend we get to
- 4:25watch movies and things like that and um
- 4:28my dad appeared on on TV um and they
- 4:31were all like oh Maya's dad and I got
- 4:33really embarrassed because of like that
- 4:36you know everyone looking at you that
- 4:39was the only time I was like and then I
- 4:41remember [laughter] I was like please
- 4:42change it not not in a way that I'm
- 4:45ashamed or anything but in a way where
- 4:47when you're singled out Right. That kind
- 4:49of feeling but other than that there was
- 4:52never any I didn't feel any different.
- 4:55>> Right. But when uh you know when you see
- 4:58your father act on screen
- 5:01>> are you able to distinguish between
- 5:04>> the character and okay this is my dad.
- 5:07>> Yes and no. Like I I think I feel it
- 5:10more. I feel the sad movies a lot more.
- 5:14Um because somewhere there is also like
- 5:16oh my goodness this is my dad but um yes
- 5:21and no I don't know it's a it's a
- 5:25yeah I I don't know how to answer that
- 5:27actually. I'm not sure.
- 5:28>> That's fine. So your mother downstairs,
- 5:30she told me that you kind of always
- 5:32wanted to be around the movies or in the
- 5:34movies,
- 5:34>> but it's only recently that you told
- 5:36them and uh and even then she was not
- 5:39too sure about whether you were telling
- 5:41them seriously or not so seriously.
- 5:44>> So when did that uh thought happen and
- 5:47journey? How was that journey like?
- 5:49>> So I was always into theater and I loved
- 5:52I have massive stage fright. given this
- 5:55is very [laughter and clears throat] um
- 5:57nerve-wracking for me. But um but when I
- 6:01was on stage, when I was performing,
- 6:04those were like the few moments where I
- 6:05felt really alive and I was like, "Oh,
- 6:07wow. I really love doing this."
- 6:10>> Um so I I always said I was into
- 6:12theater, but I did a part of me did want
- 6:15to try this out. Just didn't have the
- 6:17confidence to say it. Yeah.
- 6:19>> Um and then
- 6:21I I think a few years ago I told my mom
- 6:24and then um yeah I guess like now this
- 6:30is happening and it was just a it's now
- 6:32or never kind of thing and just go for
- 6:35it.
- 6:36>> What do you mean now or never? As in
- 6:38>> as in not now or never but this
- 6:40opportunity came along. Jujara had this
- 6:42story and
- 6:45um my mom kept asking like she's like so
- 6:48are you going to say yes or um I kept
- 6:51going back and forth like what if um one
- 6:55of the things was like my body type or
- 6:57the the fact that I don't know how to
- 6:58speak I mean I do speak maladam but I
- 7:01don't have the careless slang of someone
- 7:03who's born and brought up the fluency
- 7:05>> the fluency
- 7:06>> um so many like overthinking like I was
- 7:09just overthinking all of So that was a
- 7:12big thing. But so then it it was almost
- 7:15like just just going for it, you know.
- 7:18>> Yeah.
- 7:19>> You know, I I I I'm reminded of the time
- 7:21I came into video from print
- 7:24>> because I had very similar concerns
- 7:26about, you know, am I am I too old for
- 7:29this? Am I like, you know, because this
- 7:31seems to be a young person's medium. Uh
- 7:33you know, when you say body type again,
- 7:35you know, like you you look at yourself
- 7:36much more critically than other people
- 7:38look at you. and uh all this was was and
- 7:40now of course I don't care but then I
- 7:42guess in the early days uh you do think
- 7:45about uh all these things uh so I
- 7:48completely one part of me like I I know
- 7:50what even though I know I don't maybe
- 7:52the experience is not exactly similar
- 7:54but I kind of know where you're coming
- 7:55from so so knowing this when you know
- 8:00you're saying okay to the script you're
- 8:01saying okay to the character you're
- 8:02doing that what was it like actually
- 8:05doing thing like actually you know from
- 8:08concept to creation. What was that like?
- 8:11>> I loved it. I loved uh and I didn't know
- 8:14as well because I've I've been on my
- 8:16dad's sets when I was younger, but um
- 8:19but not not often
- 8:22>> and so um I didn't know what to expect,
- 8:24but and I didn't expect to love it as
- 8:26much as I did as well. So um yeah, it
- 8:29was I loved the whole experience, all of
- 8:31it.
- 8:32>> Do you remember your very first day of
- 8:33shoot?
- 8:34>> Yeah.
- 8:34>> What was that? [laughter]
- 8:35Um I had to be on the uh it was a song
- 8:37montage. So I I don't know if you've
- 8:39seen the song that come out. Um it was
- 8:42when I was um like I have to wave to the
- 8:44kids and then I have to go uh meet TG
- 8:47uncle and Yeah.
- 8:49>> And that was the
- 8:51>> Did [clears throat] you just flow into
- 8:52that? There was no
- 8:54>> No, I couldn't sleep all night before
- 8:56[laughter]
- 8:57>> and [clears throat] I showed up. I was
- 8:59super super nervous, but then it was
- 9:01just uh like like I said, you're nervous
- 9:04before, but then you just have to do it,
- 9:05right? And then Yeah. And then I then it
- 9:08got easier as the days went by. Um I was
- 9:11still nervous throughout till the end,
- 9:13but it wasn't as bad as the first day.
- 9:16No, but you're talking about the good
- 9:18kind of nervous like for example when I
- 9:21a lot of stage actors they say that or
- 9:24even dancers they say that they still
- 9:26feel the butterflies in their stomach
- 9:28every time they go on stage because the
- 9:31audience is new uh even though they may
- 9:33have performed the same song many many
- 9:35times this is like a like like yet
- 9:37another thing that you know anything can
- 9:39happen live so that's a good kind of but
- 9:42nervousness was it that or was it like a
- 9:44crippling kind of will I be able to do
- 9:47this, you know.
- 9:48>> The second really Okay. [laughter] Okay.
- 9:50>> The crippling um kind of I don't know if
- 9:54I'm going to be able to do this. Um how
- 9:57am I going to do this? And then at the
- 9:59end of the day, you kind of just have to
- 10:00trust that you're I mean, it just you
- 10:03just have to do it, right? And hope for
- 10:05the best, I guess. So,
- 10:07>> yeah. Did you see yourself on the
- 10:09monitor?
- 10:10>> Uh in the beginning, no, I didn't want
- 10:12to. Um later on I did uh just when I
- 10:16wanted to see if it's okay, things like
- 10:18that. Um but I didn't want to get cuz I
- 10:21am a person who overthinks a lot. So I
- 10:23didn't want to get too in my head about
- 10:26oh this angle or that angle or like my
- 10:30is this okay? Is this okay? But
- 10:32>> yeah,
- 10:32>> I think towards the end I did look more
- 10:35but maybe I shouldn't have, maybe I
- 10:36won't if I for the next
- 10:38>> No, it's also maybe you didn't want to
- 10:40get too conscious about everything and
- 10:41like because this is tough enough uh
- 10:43just just getting out there and you know
- 10:45doing the shot according to what the
- 10:47director wants
- 10:49>> and then you know in addition if you're
- 10:50going to go in front of a monitor and
- 10:52then you're going to
- 10:53>> and then you're already judging yourself
- 10:54and then you judge yourself even more.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:56>> Yeah. So that that might be a little too
- 10:58much to think. Now um one of the things
- 11:01about being an actor's u legendary
- 11:05actor's daughter or son or whatever is
- 11:07the fact that uh you are going to be
- 11:10under a microscope whatever you do if if
- 11:14u you know you write a book of you wrote
- 11:16a book of poems it had your paintings
- 11:19>> it's not going to be seen as visa's
- 11:23book of poems illustrated with visa's
- 11:25poetry it's going to be seen as visa
- 11:28moal's
- 11:29book of poems illustrated with the moan
- 11:32lal's book of poetry and so there's
- 11:34always going to be a magnifying glass so
- 11:36recently you did something that almost
- 11:38everyone did which is to kind of uh put
- 11:40out a social media uh post about the
- 11:43Jarrammat protests and that becomes like
- 11:46you know a point of uh you know people
- 11:48commenting on you this life under the
- 11:51microscope or whatever you call goldfish
- 11:53bowl life
- 11:56how have you been able to tackle that
- 12:00>> uh to be honest like I've never felt
- 12:04like I was under a microscope.
- 12:05>> Okay.
- 12:06>> Um maybe because I haven't been living
- 12:09in Kerala or living I've been out most
- 12:11of the time or I've been in UTI. Um so I
- 12:16I've never felt this
- 12:19microscopic thing or anything like that.
- 12:22>> Okay. So you you've never felt that that
- 12:24you know that people are going to look
- 12:25at me a little with a with a slightly
- 12:28judgmental eye than they would another
- 12:31person that you've never felt that
- 12:33>> oh no that yeah of course of course they
- 12:35will right and it's also because of I am
- 12:41uh my dad's daughter um there are
- 12:44expectations of how they would I mean if
- 12:48they uh some people like uh like him as
- 12:54an actor, some people don't. And then
- 12:56it's um there those opinions will also
- 13:00come onto your um just it's just given,
- 13:04right?
- 13:05>> Um
- 13:06>> but I've never felt it. I don't I don't
- 13:09look at the comments. And also um yeah,
- 13:13of course you have that uh I don't know
- 13:16if if I'm going in an airport with my
- 13:18dad, there are a lot of eyes on you,
- 13:20things like that. But other than that,
- 13:22I've never
- 13:25>> Yeah, it's never been much of an issue.
- 13:27>> It's not an issue for Did Did See,
- 13:29because Prrenav made his debut some
- 13:32quite a while ago actually now because
- 13:34he does very few films, but then it this
- 13:35I'm trying to remember when that film
- 13:37was. Uh yeah, a long time ago. Yeah.
- 13:40Yeah. Did did did he give you any uh
- 13:43suggestions or or tips or anything about
- 13:46listen it's going this is what it's
- 13:47going to be like so be prepared for this
- 13:50or anything because he knows you so
- 13:52well.
- 13:52>> Oh wait you mean about the movie or
- 13:54>> no about the life
- 13:56>> the life in general of Yeah.
- 13:57>> Um no
- 14:00>> you didn't ask him. I mean like I I do
- 14:03talk to him about everything and then I
- 14:05said well when this happened this
- 14:07happened and he's like yeah this is how
- 14:08it is right anything that you say it
- 14:11there is repercussions like
- 14:14>> um and my friend called me and said that
- 14:16as well she's like I can post whatever I
- 14:18want but you need to think twice before
- 14:20anything
- 14:22>> um
- 14:23>> but yeah
- 14:24>> and did you ask him about what it was
- 14:26like to face [music] the camera or any
- 14:28such suggestions or did you ask your
- 14:30father. Yeah,
- 14:31>> I asked uh I asked my brother, he said
- 14:33just go have fun. And my dad, he he's
- 14:37not he he he said this is your own
- 14:40journey like you have to figure it out
- 14:42on your own like yeah it wasn't there
- 14:45was no advice given that this is how you
- 14:47should do it or anything like
- 14:48>> No, of course it was your own journey
- 14:50because in a way when he made his debut
- 14:53uh way back in 1980 or whatever it's
- 14:55like that was a very different world.
- 14:57The cinema was very different. uh the
- 15:00way the world perceived so the social
- 15:01media was not there there's so many
- 15:03other things that the world itself was
- 15:04very different the kind of movies that
- 15:05were being made were different so that
- 15:08way maybe you know this a little
- 15:09different but they I mean in terms of
- 15:12facing the camera or in terms of
- 15:14something was there any useful advice
- 15:16given there in terms of
- 15:17>> um on on set yeah he told me to slow
- 15:20down cuz I was uh I guess nervous as
- 15:24well so I'll be trying to rush
- 15:26everything and that was throughout I
- 15:28would try to rush everything to it's
- 15:30like I want to get to the end, you know.
- 15:32Um so for that he said to slow down. Um
- 15:36but other than that like no advice. Um
- 15:40but in general in life um my dad has
- 15:44like always let us figure things out on
- 15:46our own. Like he's never been like this
- 15:48is what you should be doing or this is
- 15:49how you should do it. Um it's like
- 15:52allowed us to discover who we are and
- 15:55have our own experiences I guess. Yeah.
- 15:58>> So what was Jude like on set? Jude
- 16:00Anthony Joseph the director of the
- 16:02movie.
- 16:03>> Uh he said that uh when you like before
- 16:07you began there was a bit of an audition
- 16:09to get you acclamatized to the whole
- 16:11movie making thing and all that. What
- 16:13was that like? So the first [laughter] I
- 16:16so the first day that I went there, I
- 16:19couldn't even say one line and we kept
- 16:21going over and over and then I was
- 16:24thinking to myself like
- 16:26like how am I going to do the whole
- 16:28movie and I'm sure he was also thinking
- 16:30oh no, what have we done? Um but then he
- 16:34came up with um he said like forget the
- 16:36whole script we'll just I'll just give
- 16:38you um it's kind of like improv, right?
- 16:41I'll just make up a situation and then
- 16:43you act. Um if malaram comes, malaram
- 16:47comes. If gibberish comes, gibberish
- 16:49comes. But just it's a situation and
- 16:51then you act.
- 16:52>> And then that was um I think that opened
- 16:55me up and that was yeah it it kind of
- 16:58broke the the ice or what of whatever
- 17:01you know um of like the beginning the
- 17:05starting troubles. Again, I include
- 17:08myself in this. You know, I'm a
- 17:10tamilian, but the English medium
- 17:14education and the fact that many of the
- 17:16books that I read were in English and
- 17:18all that kind of made English the
- 17:20default language of thought. So, you
- 17:24know, when it came to talking in Tamil
- 17:25or processing things in Tamil, it was a
- 17:27little bit of a learning curve over the
- 17:29years like right from when I was in my
- 17:30teens or whatever it is, right? It's it
- 17:31didn't come like immediately. Even
- 17:33though at home you would converse in a
- 17:35bit but it was always tanglish or
- 17:37whatever it is you know like it's never
- 17:39it's not that you did not know but just
- 17:41you took the easy way out.
- 17:43>> What is it like to kind of find your way
- 17:46back into a language?
- 17:48>> It I there there are so many little
- 17:51things that I've realized oh my goodness
- 17:54I've been saying this wrong the whole
- 17:55way through. Um
- 17:57>> give me an example. For example, um in
- 18:01malaram when when we're saying um like
- 18:06let's all like when we say nam that's
- 18:10all of us right but say that I'm talking
- 18:12about me and someone else but you're not
- 18:15included in that then you say but I I
- 18:19never knew that I was saying nam for the
- 18:21whole
- 18:22>> right
- 18:22>> way through. So thing little
- 18:24>> shifts like that. Um
- 18:26>> and then uh but it's actually really
- 18:28nice. I felt like
- 18:30>> there's a whole um culture that I missed
- 18:32out on just from not growing up there.
- 18:35So coming back to it was like really
- 18:38beautiful.
- 18:38>> Nice. And you know the beautiful thing
- 18:40is you if this is something you want to
- 18:43do there's always the rest of your life
- 18:44to figure it out. You know, it's not
- 18:45like like you know this is oh my god I
- 18:48you know I don't know this because you
- 18:50have lots of time to learn and and do
- 18:52all this stuff.
- 18:53>> I have a lot to learn.
- 18:54>> You have a lot to learn.
- 18:55>> Yeah.
- 18:55>> Which was more difficult the acting part
- 18:57or the malaram part?
- 18:58>> The malara.
- 18:59>> Yeah. [laughter]
- 18:59>> Yeah. I think that's what I was most
- 19:01nervous about because the acting I um I
- 19:05mean of course that was also really
- 19:08nerve-wracking and like some new and
- 19:10everything but it kind of you can still
- 19:15um you can relate it to your other art
- 19:18forms right um with poetry you are
- 19:21>> kind of it's coming out of you right um
- 19:25the emotions are in your body and then
- 19:27you're bringing it out through your
- 19:28writing
- 19:29But with the acting, you're bringing in
- 19:31the emotions and then you're feeling it
- 19:33in your body and you're you're getting
- 19:35it out, right? So, I don't know if that
- 19:37made sense. [laughter]
- 19:39>> But, um, with the mallayalam, it's more
- 19:41like intellectual. It's in your mind.
- 19:42It's not in your body. So, because it
- 19:45doesn't it's not my um like it's not the
- 19:49first language that comes.
- 19:50>> Yeah.
- 19:51>> It's not your thought language. Yeah.
- 19:52>> Exactly. So then it's kind of uh it's in
- 19:56your head but you have to also kind of
- 19:59bring it into your body which is what I
- 20:01found really difficult with when the
- 20:03language comes in.
- 20:05>> That's a very beautiful way you're
- 20:06explaining it because uh it's not the
- 20:08expressing itself, it's the
- 20:10internalizing of something and then
- 20:12bringing it out, right? It's like uh
- 20:14it's a two-way process.
- 20:16first into the emotions of the scene.
- 20:23[laughter]
- 20:24>> But um so that's why I learned the whole
- 20:28script by like um memorization mugged it
- 20:31in my head so that it can just come out
- 20:34and I'm not thinking about it, you know.
- 20:36>> Yeah. So he he jud gave me the script a
- 20:41month in advance and I was able to
- 20:44memorize it.
- 20:45>> Yeah. But tell me why did it take So you
- 20:47were already in theater English theater
- 20:49I'm assuming.
- 20:50>> Yeah. I I've done a little theater like
- 20:53before this.
- 20:53>> Yeah. So why did it take like a little
- 20:56like why not jump into this earlier?
- 20:58Yes.
- 20:59>> Even with the theater I've just done a
- 21:02few courses, right? And it wasn't I was
- 21:06I I just didn't have the confidence. I
- 21:08don't know why it took so long and I
- 21:10wish I would have started earlier. Um
- 21:13but it just I guess things just happen
- 21:15in their own timing.
- 21:16>> Yeah.
- 21:17>> And yeah, it just happened this way.
- 21:20>> So what can you tell us about your what
- 21:21you're playing in Todd?
- 21:23>> Okay. I don't know how much I can tell
- 21:26but um I would also like to mention that
- 21:29this is I would say this is only like
- 21:31half my performance because um my
- 21:33character Mu it's me but then um Aditya
- 21:37Lakshmi is going to be the one to dub my
- 21:40voice because I wish I wish I could have
- 21:42done it but um like I said the Kerala
- 21:45slang
- 21:46>> wasn't there something I have to work on
- 21:48um but she's actually playing my friend
- 21:50in the movie and she's also dubbing for
- 21:53Mino Mu. So, Mu, uh, I don't know how
- 21:56much I can say. Uh,
- 21:58>> she's just she's just a girl. Um,
- 22:01>> she it's her her dad and her dog Messi.
- 22:05Um, and she's just living her life. I
- 22:09don't know what else to
- 22:11>> Yeah. And and Monal plays your father
- 22:13>> and Sorry, no, no, no, no. Uh, Sai
- 22:15Kumar.
- 22:15>> Okay. Because there were Jude said he
- 22:18has a kind of an extended cameo.
- 22:19>> My dad is in the movie. I since this is
- 22:22coming out before I don't think I can
- 22:24say what role or anything
- 22:25>> you know it was the same thing with Jude
- 22:27because it was like pulling teeth like
- 22:29like [laughter]
- 22:29he was like literally calculating in his
- 22:31mind how much can I say and how much can
- 22:33I not say so uh it was this so so it was
- 22:38something that that you you said I
- 22:40really like this character and this is
- 22:41something that that I want to do and
- 22:43then you just went ahead and did it.
- 22:44Yeah, I can say like um this character I
- 22:47found she's inspiring. She's um
- 22:50resilient. She's uh she's pretty bold.
- 22:54She's pretty cool.
- 22:55>> Okay.
- 22:56>> Is she you in any way?
- 22:59>> Is she I would like to be more like her,
- 23:01I can say. Yeah.
- 23:02>> Okay. Do you believe in
- 23:05films being inspirational and therefore
- 23:10you want to do characters that are going
- 23:12to motivate society and or but you also
- 23:15say that listen I just want to play
- 23:16characters that are interesting and I
- 23:18don't care if they're flawed.
- 23:19>> Oh, I would like to play all kinds of
- 23:21characters. Um
- 23:24not necessarily inspiring. Inspiring is
- 23:27cool. I mean inspiring is great. Um but
- 23:31it's also what is
- 23:34I I would like to reflect I mean I would
- 23:36like to play real characters as well
- 23:37right um life isn't always only
- 23:40inspiring it's
- 23:41>> it's all shades right so I would like to
- 23:44do everything like
- 23:46>> explore um
- 23:49all all shades of characters yeah
- 23:52>> you know there is this theory that
- 23:53everything that we do in life kind of
- 23:56reflects on what we're doing at the
- 23:57present moment
- 23:58>> so did you find that like your poetry,
- 24:01your painting, your solo traveling,
- 24:04you're living in other places by
- 24:06yourself. Did all of this somehow did
- 24:08you feel it falling into place or you it
- 24:11just that's it's not a connection you
- 24:13can make easily?
- 24:14>> You mean falling into place with this
- 24:15character
- 24:16>> with acting? With acting itself, with
- 24:18cinema, acting, all those things?
- 24:19>> Um yeah, in a way I think everything
- 24:22kind of
- 24:24um
- 24:27yes and no. I mean, you can draw the
- 24:30more experiences you have, it does kind
- 24:33of change you in some way, right? Um I I
- 24:36I don't know if I can necessarily say
- 24:37that um all of that is what I mean if
- 24:42that influenced my acting, but maybe so.
- 24:46I I don't know.
- 24:47>> So, let's talk about your traveling,
- 24:49right? And and your brother is a solo
- 24:51traveler as well
- 24:52>> and something you share in common. What
- 24:55is the difference between going
- 24:56somewhere with a group of friends?
- 24:58>> Yeah.
- 24:58>> And going somewhere by yourself. One,
- 25:02what is the motivation behind that? And
- 25:04two, how is it different?
- 25:06>> Um, going with other people is I mean I
- 25:10love going with other people as well.
- 25:12Um, but it's more like a group thing.
- 25:15You need a uh you you can't just do your
- 25:18own thing, right? Like you you decide
- 25:20together what you want to do. uh and you
- 25:22have that comfort of people being there.
- 25:26You can just kind of switch off. You
- 25:27don't have to
- 25:29>> you can just go with the flow.
- 25:31>> Um going alone, uh I also love that. Um
- 25:34but it's a different kind of thing where
- 25:37you need to
- 25:39>> be more responsible. One, um two, like I
- 25:44think you learn a lot about yourself
- 25:46doing that. Um
- 25:47>> how how are you in uncomfortable
- 25:50situations? How do you
- 25:53move through that? And um I think it
- 25:57teaches you a lot just in general
- 25:58traveling anyway, even if it's with
- 26:00people.
- 26:01>> Yeah, I I kind of I I think I I see
- 26:03where you're coming from with this
- 26:04teaching you more about yourself, the
- 26:07solo thing because
- 26:08>> uh after my 12th, I went to a hostel and
- 26:11uh you know, and it was far away. So the
- 26:14thing is
- 26:15>> suddenly you're not you don't have your
- 26:17people telling you what to do. Yeah.
- 26:23>> And it tells you a lot about yourself
- 26:24that you don't see earlier.
- 26:26>> So I think that's a really good though.
- 26:29I'm not done much solo travel though,
- 26:31but I can kind of see where you're
- 26:33coming from with this uh with this
- 26:35thing. So but but have you ever
- 26:37psychoanalyzed this need for occasional
- 26:41bouts of soloism? I have psychoanalyzed
- 26:45my need of um I get restless when I'm in
- 26:49a place for too long and I that's
- 26:52something I do want to change within
- 26:53myself. Um I I don't maybe it's boarding
- 26:56school cuz I've I was there then I'll
- 26:58come for holidays go back then ever
- 27:00since after school I've just been
- 27:02traveling. [snorts]
- 27:03So there is there is this this
- 27:05restlessness within me that after maybe
- 27:08a few months in a place I'm like okay
- 27:10it's time to move. [laughter]
- 27:12I don't know what it is but um yeah that
- 27:16is something that I should look into or
- 27:18no I mean that I have looked into but I
- 27:21haven't really figured out. So, so how
- 27:23does it look at how do you feel it when
- 27:25when you look at like people who have
- 27:28settled lives you know they live in one
- 27:30place they have one job they go in the
- 27:32morning they come back in the evening
- 27:34because even the job that you do is a
- 27:36has a bit of restlessness because
- 27:38>> it's you know some days it could be a
- 27:39day shift some days it could be a night
- 27:41shift uh then suddenly you'll have a
- 27:43break and then you'll have to slip back
- 27:44into character the restlessness also
- 27:46comes because you're not shooting scenes
- 27:48in order you know you're probably
- 27:51shooting the end at the beginning at the
- 27:52beginning at the end or something like
- 27:54that. So the thing is your mind is
- 27:56always it's not a streamlined steady
- 27:58thing.
- 27:59>> Uh so how do you look at it when you see
- 28:01other people in these very
- 28:04uh A to B to C kind of life?
- 28:07>> I mean if that works for them I mean
- 28:09it's beautiful right like um everyone
- 28:11has their own way of moving through this
- 28:14life and if that works for them that's
- 28:17that's that's really cool. It's not me.
- 28:19But
- 28:20>> um yeah, I think maybe maybe like how I
- 28:26feel like I should be more settled.
- 28:28Maybe for someone with the 9 to5,
- 28:31they're like, "Oh, maybe I want to
- 28:32explore more or
- 28:33>> um or maybe they're settled in that."
- 28:35But
- 28:36>> yeah, I don't I just see it as another
- 28:38way of living. Now uh when you have uh
- 28:43what would you like to tell us about
- 28:45working with co-stars
- 28:47>> in this medium?
- 28:48>> Oh um I had a great experience. Uh
- 28:52Ashish is uh one of the co-stars and I'm
- 28:56so grateful that it was him because um
- 29:00it was like we were moving through this
- 29:01together. Um we're both newcomers. He's
- 29:04been in Empiron before um but just for
- 29:07like a short scene. Uh but this he has
- 29:11incredible uh screen presence and we
- 29:14would always um you know we'd check in
- 29:16with each other like how are you feeling
- 29:17like um you know and it was nice to have
- 29:20that support.
- 29:20>> Yeah.
- 29:21>> Um Saiakoma uncle and my dad. Um it was
- 29:26incredible watching them work. Um
- 29:29Saikumar uncle had a lot of tips for me.
- 29:32He would help me. Um, and he I really
- 29:36appreciated that he took the time to
- 29:37like give me advice and all of that.
- 29:40>> Um, and yeah, it was and everyone on set
- 29:44just made me feel so welcome. Um, the
- 29:48the patience that they had um I remember
- 29:51there's one scene where um in in the
- 29:55middle of [laughter]
- 29:55in the middle of the scene uh there was
- 29:58I guess in the script uh they didn't put
- 30:01this one Malana word in it. So Juda is
- 30:04like you uh Juda is like you have to say
- 30:06this and uh and I couldn't get the word
- 30:09and uh Jona Jonti John and um his team
- 30:15Anisha all of them are holding the
- 30:17camera and it's a heavy camera and I've
- 30:20took take after take um for a really
- 30:23long time and but they were still so
- 30:24patient you know and they were holding
- 30:26this heavy camera um till I got it. So
- 30:29like things like that, like I really
- 30:31appreciated their patience cuz of course
- 30:34they they've been doing movie after
- 30:36movie with like great actors and
- 30:41probably people who just, you know, get
- 30:42it really fast and um the fact that
- 30:47they were able to, you know, be patient
- 30:49with me, I am grateful for. Given that
- 30:51you're an overinker, uh, do you also
- 30:54process, oh my god, you know, like like
- 30:57I better get this right because they've
- 30:58been holding the camera for so long. Is
- 31:00that also running in your mind?
- 31:01>> Yeah, a little bit. [laughter]
- 31:03At the back of my head, I was like, I
- 31:04need to get this. But it actually makes
- 31:07it worse when you feel like you have to
- 31:09get something and then [laughter] it's
- 31:11in your mind and then you mess up even
- 31:12more when you feel like you have to get
- 31:14it, you know?
- 31:15>> Um, when you put pressure on yourself,
- 31:17it takes longer. Yeah. So, you just you
- 31:19just have to cut away that that thought
- 31:20like, you know, that's the job. I'm
- 31:22sorry, but that's I can't afford to
- 31:24think about that right now. I just have
- 31:25to like [laughter] think about what I'm
- 31:27doing right now. Yeah. It's just kind of
- 31:29for this one.
- 31:30>> Would you say that it was uh having
- 31:32Ashish around was a great help because
- 31:34>> he's more like your age and therefore
- 31:36you could probably confide in him a
- 31:39little more.
- 31:39>> For sure. For sure.
- 31:40>> Yeah.
- 31:41>> And like there was that rapper already.
- 31:42We knew each other from before. um we
- 31:44got to know each other better on uh on
- 31:46this movie, but
- 31:48>> we there was that familiar familiarity
- 31:51>> and um yeah, just that we can confide in
- 31:53each other um say what we're struggling
- 31:56with and whatever it is and hype each
- 31:59other up. [laughter] So yeah,
- 32:01>> that that was been that was nice. Let's
- 32:02talk about your poetry.
- 32:04>> Yeah.
- 32:04>> Uh it's there's been one book so far.
- 32:06Before we start about the poetry itself,
- 32:09uh what made you decide to want to
- 32:12combine the poetry with your paintings?
- 32:15>> So actually these paintings weren't the
- 32:17paintings that I would have actually
- 32:19chosen. Um the paintings that I would
- 32:22have chosen
- 32:23>> was all destroyed in the floods that
- 32:25happened. Yeah,
- 32:26>> I had I took uh months and months
- 32:29working on these paintings, but I had
- 32:31left them in the like uh in the garage
- 32:34actually. uh it was in a box and the
- 32:38floods came and it all got ruined.
- 32:41>> Um but
- 32:43on this was actually a sketchbook um
- 32:46that I had written maybe after school.
- 32:49Uh it was random poems here and there.
- 32:52Um and my brother actually suggested
- 32:54he's like hey why don't you make a book
- 32:55and I was like oh yeah okay cool let's
- 32:57try it out. And then it happened. So,
- 33:01he's this very supportive older brother.
- 33:04>> For sure. Yeah. Actually, anything um I
- 33:07would like he's my go-to person for
- 33:11advice, for whatever is running through
- 33:13my mind. Um he's been Yeah. a good
- 33:16brother.
- 33:17>> That's very rare for sisters to say,
- 33:19>> is it?
- 33:19>> You know, because usually it's it's it's
- 33:21fighting siblings that we hear about.
- 33:22>> No, we fight but it's like just
- 33:25momentary, you know, and then get back
- 33:27to like being chill, whatever. But the
- 33:29other thing about uh you know different
- 33:31star children or director's children or
- 33:34because film is a medium where uh you
- 33:37know the the the person who's acting in
- 33:39like uh in films is is not spending much
- 33:43time with their family simply because of
- 33:44the nature of the job
- 33:45>> that's it takes them away here and there
- 33:47and stuff like that. There are some that
- 33:49try to make a like an an equaliz because
- 33:52I recently heard Matt Demon say that
- 33:55when the kids were younger it was easier
- 33:57because every two weeks he would get
- 33:58them on the sets but on they started
- 34:01school and this and that they started
- 34:02having their own routines and therefore
- 34:04it became much more difficult to be in
- 34:06N. So what was it like being with a kind
- 34:10of this kind of you know where someone
- 34:12is there yet kind of not there because
- 34:15they're shooting somewhere or whatever.
- 34:17Yeah.
- 34:18>> So, I think when I was younger,
- 34:20honestly, I don't remember much of when
- 34:22I was younger, but um my dad wasn't
- 34:25around a lot because of the nature of
- 34:27the job and whenever he had holidays or
- 34:30breaks, he would come home. Um I think
- 34:32around my teenage years maybe I felt it
- 34:35more. Um but then I think as I grew
- 34:40older I understood it more like this is
- 34:44his passion, this is his work and um I
- 34:48think just seeing how dedicated he is to
- 34:52his craft and he always made the time to
- 34:54always call and um I it honestly I
- 34:59didn't overthink it until someone was
- 35:02like do you feel this way and I was like
- 35:04huh [laughter] do Okay. Um, but no, like
- 35:09uh I've never um
- 35:13[snorts] I don't think I've ever felt
- 35:16angry about it or anything like that. It
- 35:19was more like uh it was more like I I an
- 35:23understanding that I came to like oh
- 35:25this is how it is and
- 35:27>> this is his art his his passion right
- 35:30and his
- 35:31>> so when he wrote the forward for your
- 35:34book of poetry
- 35:35>> there's one very lovely thing that he
- 35:37said that
- 35:38>> uh I think it's more about feelings than
- 35:41meaning
- 35:42>> u and I think that was a very nice way
- 35:44to describe some of the stuff that
- 35:46you've said because it goes all the away
- 35:48from the ode of an idlih [laughter]
- 35:51to to you know something else where I'm
- 35:54gazing into the emptiness and uh you
- 35:56know I I wear many masks and and things
- 35:59like that.
- 35:59>> So it goes all you know it's more like a
- 36:02stream of consciousness kind of thing.
- 36:04Would you say like you're a very very
- 36:06sensitive and emotional person?
- 36:08>> I am a very emotional person. Um
- 36:11sensitive. Yes. Yes. Um, I think it
- 36:16depends though. Like it's not like I'm
- 36:19uh you can't say anything. I'm
- 36:21sensitive. Nothing like that. But I do
- 36:23feel deeply for sure.
- 36:24>> Okay. And did that help with your
- 36:27>> with
- 36:28>> the acting?
- 36:29>> The acting for sure. That that's Yeah,
- 36:32that's that's what uh I mean like I
- 36:35would be like, "Oh, how does my body
- 36:38feel when I'm in this situation?" Oh,
- 36:41how cuz I am I do feel deeply. So I
- 36:45guess it does for sure help. Yeah.
- 36:47>> Yeah. So what do you mean how does my
- 36:49body feel? What does that what does that
- 36:51mean?
- 36:51>> Um what I what I mean is for example if
- 36:54I have to cry uh it's a crying scene I'm
- 36:57like how does my body feel when I I mean
- 37:00how I feel it in my body like I don't
- 37:04know how to explain but
- 37:06>> when I'm in a situation like that how
- 37:08does my body feel? And it's like
- 37:10bringing bringing your body's memory
- 37:13back if that makes sense.
- 37:14>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You
- 37:16mentioned earlier very early into the
- 37:18interview that that you know you there
- 37:19are a bunch of things that you you were
- 37:21conscious about like your body type or
- 37:22whatever it is. Do you think that that
- 37:24that kind of thing matters anymore? Do
- 37:26do uh
- 37:27>> I don't but I mean I'm sure a lot of the
- 37:31viewers do. Um, but I think things are
- 37:35changing now and I think that's great
- 37:37cuz not everyone is one specific body
- 37:40type. Um, and I think I really like that
- 37:44that's changing. You know, I think
- 37:46growing up actually skinny was the body
- 37:50type that everyone wanted, but now it's
- 37:53more fit from what I see.
- 37:55>> Yeah.
- 37:56>> Um, which is great.
- 37:58>> Yeah. Yeah. So you had talked about how
- 38:01you had an entire journey that led you
- 38:03to Thailand which is like uh you found
- 38:05it difficult to climb even a flight of
- 38:07stairs because you had a you know uh you
- 38:10were overweight and therefore you know
- 38:12something in you decided that I have to
- 38:14take do something about it and therefore
- 38:16that led you to Thailand and I forget
- 38:18the name of the the martial art
- 38:20>> uh Muay Thai
- 38:21>> moai yeah so that kind of you know
- 38:24helped you you know
- 38:27>> fix a lot of things and and and a thing.
- 38:29What was that experience like?
- 38:31>> That was incredible because like you
- 38:33said, I was so unfit and that's another
- 38:36thing. I think there's a difference
- 38:37between fitness and weight, right?
- 38:40>> Uh you can be 98 kgs, but you can be
- 38:43really fit.
- 38:44>> Um but I was almost 100 kgs and I was
- 38:48struggling like climbing stairs. I would
- 38:50be huffing and puffing and my friends
- 38:52will be like, "Why [laughter] are you
- 38:54huffing?" Um but so luckily I don't know
- 38:59I I went there um and I just thought I
- 39:02would try something new right and this
- 39:04was uh there was a place called Fitco in
- 39:07the uh in Thailand in Kosamui and um I
- 39:12just tried it out. I really didn't enjoy
- 39:14it in the beginning. I was like what is
- 39:17this? [laughter] This is really hard to
- 39:18do and it's you know but um COVID hit
- 39:22and then I didn't go back home. I stayed
- 39:25on and then I actually started really
- 39:27enjoying this and it's I think it's
- 39:29great whether it be art or even martial
- 39:32arts. It's something where you can just
- 39:34switch your brain off and you're just
- 39:36focused on what you're doing at that
- 39:38moment.
- 39:39>> Yeah.
- 39:39>> And for an hour you're just
- 39:42thinking about right punch, right kick
- 39:45or 50 kicks or whatever it is. Um, and
- 39:48it kind of changes something in your
- 39:49brain as well because I don't know why,
- 39:51but he would say 10 kicks and I would
- 39:53always stop at nine. And he's like, "Do
- 39:55you realize you're always stopping just
- 39:57before it's just one more kick?" So,
- 39:58he'll make you do like 30 more kicks
- 40:01>> till it he trains your brain in a way
- 40:03where you have to complete what you
- 40:05started, you know, um, things like that.
- 40:08So,
- 40:09>> it was um, something I'm really grateful
- 40:11for
- 40:12>> and uh, yeah, I love doing it now. But
- 40:14how did you uh because let's say you
- 40:16know we all have our periods of you know
- 40:20underweight overweight whatever it is
- 40:21right and then therefore fitness going
- 40:24to a trainer or whatever it is becomes a
- 40:25way of tackling that issue or a
- 40:27nutritionist or whatever it is but why
- 40:30Thailand I mean like did did you not
- 40:31find anybody here? Oh, no. So, it wasn't
- 40:34me going to Thailand wasn't to lose
- 40:37weight or so.
- 40:39>> No, no, no. I had only actually it was
- 40:41just more like, oh, I want to travel.
- 40:43I'm going to go away um for 2 weeks, 3
- 40:47weeks. That was my plan. And I ended up
- 40:49staying there for maybe 8 months or 9
- 40:52months. And then I just loved Thailand
- 40:55so much. Um I just feel so free there.
- 40:58You can just take your bike. You can
- 40:59just go anywhere.
- 41:00>> Um I made a good group of friends. Um,
- 41:03and yeah, so then I just kept going back
- 41:05and it was a great place to paint and
- 41:08things like that.
- 41:09>> So you you uh this was something that
- 41:12once you were there,
- 41:13>> you stumbled upon this martial art and
- 41:15say it, okay, let's try it out kind of
- 41:17thing.
- 41:18>> Yeah, it wasn't in my plan to
- 41:20>> but I really want to try out like you
- 41:22said um there are places here and stuff.
- 41:23Uh keri
- 41:25>> um I think it's beautiful. I would love
- 41:27to.
- 41:28>> New experiences matter a lot. I would
- 41:30love Yeah. I love to try out new things
- 41:32and have new experiences. Yeah.
- 41:34>> Like like food also.
- 41:35>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um I mean everything
- 41:38like anything that's I I like to try new
- 41:40things. Yeah.
- 41:41>> For sure.
- 41:42>> So was acting one of those let's try it
- 41:44out or this is more like a listen I'm
- 41:47going to be very serious about this and
- 41:48try try to give this a career kind of
- 41:50thing? acting. I think that's why maybe
- 41:52it took me so long because it felt
- 41:54serious for me and also serious because
- 41:57there is a lot to live up to, right?
- 41:59[laughter]
- 42:00Um really
- 42:04>> that's what someone told me. Um
- 42:07[laughter]
- 42:08uh Radhika ma'am in the airport she's
- 42:11like you know you have a lot to live up
- 42:13to.
- 42:14>> Yeah
- 42:14>> yes
- 42:15>> yes I do know. So yeah.
- 42:17>> Yeah, people have been telling that so
- 42:18many times. [laughter]
- 42:21What did your mom say?
- 42:23>> Um, my mom actually was so I don't think
- 42:27this movie would have happened if not
- 42:29for my mom. Uh, she was so supportive
- 42:31throughout. Um, I
- 42:34>> said she was there all the time.
- 42:37>> Yeah, she was there. She was um I am so
- 42:40grateful for it because
- 42:42like for for me um like my mom is
- 42:46someone who I do confide in and
- 42:48everything and uh she knew how much I
- 42:51wanted to do this and um yeah throughout
- 42:54she's just been a a rock throughout this
- 42:57whole process. Yeah.
- 42:58>> Yeah.
- 42:59So now that the film is coming out, what
- 43:02is what is it that you want to tell
- 43:03people like like uh if you were to plug
- 43:05the film like what would you say if you
- 43:08were the film's marketing person? Come
- 43:10see Turkham because
- 43:12>> come see Turkam because
- 43:17um
- 43:19oh my days
- 43:21>> [sighs]
- 43:21>> uh
- 43:22just I can't say much without things
- 43:26away. Yeah, but
- 43:30you guys come see it and then decide for
- 43:32yourselves, you know, like [laughter]
- 43:34I I don't have a word specific word for
- 43:37it, but um
- 43:40yeah,
- 43:41>> if there is one specific piece of advice
- 43:45that you could give to your younger
- 43:47self,
- 43:47>> yeah,
- 43:48>> what would that be?
- 43:49>> Um I think to take up more space. That
- 43:53was something younger me struggled with
- 43:55a lot. Um, so I think that would be
- 43:58>> take up more space.
- 43:59>> Yeah. Not too much, not too little,
- 44:02>> which is assert yourself more
- 44:04>> to be more confident in yourself. I
- 44:06think to
- 44:08>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:10>> To be more confident about things.
- 44:12>> But you do seem like you've done I mean
- 44:13doing theaters takes a lot of
- 44:15confidence. It uh
- 44:17>> I don't know like I feel like when I'm
- 44:20But then you're playing that character,
- 44:21right? And then it's the moments before
- 44:23that it's hard to get on the stage.
- 44:25Yeah.
- 44:26>> Um, but yeah, that would be my advice if
- 44:30I could go back to younger me.
- 44:32>> Nice. I hope you have a fantastic film
- 44:35journey.
- 44:36>> Thank you. and uh you know you could
- 44:38kind of you know there's always going to
- 44:40be I and and I hope you take the
- 44:44the criticisms and the the praise that
- 44:47comes towards you like you know with the
- 44:49balanced way because I'm sure there's a
- 44:51lot of people waiting to see what is
- 44:53Mlala's daughter going [laughter] to do
- 44:54kind of a thing and yeah it is it is
- 44:57kind of a thing and and you have a a
- 44:59solid director because Jude's last film
- 45:01was 2018 there's going to be a lot of
- 45:03curiosity about what he's doing after
- 45:04that movie which pretty much was the
- 45:07industry hit for the longest time uh and
- 45:09it spoke to a lot of uh Malali people in
- 45:12a way so this film is I think we can
- 45:15safely say it's it's a little bit
- 45:17anticipated [laughter] so all the best
- 45:19with it and so thank you so much
- 45:21>> thank you
