- 0:02There we go.
- 0:09>> [laughter]
- 0:10>> That was neat.
- 0:11>> Yeah, that was neat.
- 0:13>> [music]

- 0:27[music]
- 0:33[music]
- 0:37>> Hey guys, Metal Jesus here and I'm on
- 0:40the road again. This time I'm taking my
- 0:42buddy Drunken Master Paul on an epic
- 0:45road trip to parts of Washington state I
- 0:49have never been.
- 0:50This is going to be 5 days of retro game
- 0:53hunting. We're going to be exploring
- 0:55abandoned coastal forts. We're going to
- 0:58be cruising probably too fast in
- 1:01rain-soaked highways and we're going to
- 1:03be staying in small towns with stunning
- 1:06views.
- 1:08Including a little town that played a
- 1:10major role in the 1990s grunge movement.
- 1:14Probably you've heard of this band
- 1:16before.
- 1:18Plus at the end of the trip I'll share
- 1:19everything we picked up along the way.
- 1:21So, buckle up and let's hit the road.
- 1:25>> [music]
- 1:34[music]
- 1:42>> Now, before we get started I feel like
- 1:44an explanation is in order because
- 1:46everywhere Paul takes his vehicle,
- 1:49everybody wants to know what the heck
- 1:51this is.
- 1:53He calls it the Bin Chicken and this is
- 1:55a 2008 Dodge Charger that DMP
- 1:57transformed into an Australian ute style
- 2:01truck. Kind of think of it like an El
- 2:03Camino.
- 2:05It took him about a year to build and
- 2:07considering this is his first time doing
- 2:08anything like this, it turned out pretty
- 2:11purple.
- 2:12And it's named after an Australian bird
- 2:15that Aussies nickname a bin chicken
- 2:18because they're I guess they're trash
- 2:20scavengers and you know, Paul just
- 2:22thought that was pretty cool.
- 2:24>> One reason I'm super excited about this
- 2:25trip, besides just hanging out with my
- 2:27buddy, is [music] this is the very first
- 2:29time I've taken Betty Bin Chicken out in
- 2:31the rain. And why is that? Is she
- 2:33precious? No, no. She's a bin chicken.
- 2:37I finally fixed all the leaks, I think.
- 2:39So, we're taking it out in the rain and
- 2:41once we do this, then I can take it out
- 2:42anytime I want. But we're going to find
- 2:45out. I'm saying it's going to have three
- 2:46leaks.
- 2:47>> [music]
- 2:48>> Three leaks by the end of the the trip,
- 2:49but we'll find out. She's getting wet.
- 2:52>> Now you guys know I've done several
- 2:54travel videos over the years in
- 2:56Washington state where I live, but never
- 2:58on the most western side. As most of you
- 3:02know, I live in the Seattle area, which
- 3:03is where most of the population lives
- 3:06kind of up and down Interstate 5, which
- 3:09is what's called Puget Sound.
- 3:12However, there's a massive section of
- 3:13our state between Puget Sound and the
- 3:15Pacific Ocean that is sprinkled with a
- 3:18lot of little towns to explore and there
- 3:20is a massive rainforest and national
- 3:23park there.
- 3:25And all along the way there are little
- 3:27video game stores for us to plunder. Oh,
- 3:30yes.
- 3:31So, we're going to start this trip by
- 3:33hopping on the Edmonds ferry and taking
- 3:35that over to Kingston. Now this is a fun
- 3:38little 20-minute ride across the water.
- 3:41It's just enough time to park your car
- 3:43and then go up above and kind of hang
- 3:45out and look at the views. One thing
- 3:48that's new, I hadn't seen this before,
- 3:49is that somebody spread out a bunch of
- 3:52puzzles across all of the tables up
- 3:54there
- 3:55where anybody could go and just sit down
- 3:57and help solve that puzzle throughout
- 3:59the day. Again, I thought that was
- 4:01pretty cool, pretty unexpected, kind of
- 4:03fun. And as you can see here, it's
- 4:06pretty cloudy out. There's a little bit
- 4:08of rain drizzle, but nothing too bad.
- 4:11And I always tell everyone that comes to
- 4:13this area that the Washington State
- 4:14Ferry system is a great introduction to
- 4:17traveling around Puget Sound [music]
- 4:20if you get the chance. Plus, it's just
- 4:22neat to drive your car onto a big old
- 4:24boat, you know? That's such a cool part
- 4:27of living in this area. It's way way
- 4:31quicker than trying to drive around to
- 4:34get some of these places on the
- 4:35freeways.
- 4:36You know, you pay, I don't know, it's
- 4:37like 15, 20 dollars or something like
- 4:39that to get on the ferry, save yourself
- 4:41a ton of time, and the views are
- 4:43excellent. Once we are off the ferries,
- 4:46we are sprinting down to Silverdale to
- 4:49check out a gaming store that I've been
- 4:51meaning to visit for several years now.
- 4:53Actually, the owner of this place,
- 4:55he goes to a bunch of the local expos in
- 4:58our area. So, I've bumped into him, you
- 5:00know, several times over the years. He's
- 5:02been like, "Hey, dude, if you ever get
- 5:03over onto the peninsula, you got to
- 5:05check out my store." Well, today is that
- 5:07day.
- 5:08Now, what's interesting about Silverdale
- 5:10is that it's technically not even a
- 5:11city. They keep trying to vote to
- 5:14incorporate it and make it official, but
- 5:17it keeps losing the popular vote. So, it
- 5:20stays an unincorporated county, or I
- 5:24guess they call it a census-designated
- 5:26place,
- 5:28but not a city, which is pretty funny
- 5:29because they have over 20,000 people
- 5:31living there,
- 5:33but they don't want to be called a city
- 5:34just yet. It probably has something to
- 5:35do with taxes or something. I have no
- 5:37idea, but that's pretty wild, right?
- 5:39>> You prepared for video games, dude?
- 5:42>> I am always prepared for video games,
- 5:44especially in lovely Silverdale, which
- 5:47the sky matches the name, apparently.
- 5:49They shipped this in right for us.
- 5:50That's great.
- 5:52But now that we're here, we are rolling
- 5:53into Big Red's Retro Games. And as you
- 5:56can see here, this is just jam-packed
- 5:58with everything you would expect and
- 6:00want from a retro gaming store.
- 6:03And really, I think it's the only true
- 6:06gaming store in the area. So, they get a
- 6:09lot of really cool trade-ins.
- 6:12The first one that caught my eye is this
- 6:1320th anniversary PlayStation 4, new
- 6:17in the box. This is something that you
- 6:20don't see every day, and a lot of
- 6:23people, myself included, wanted to get
- 6:25one of these when they first came out,
- 6:28and they were high in demand. Now, the
- 6:30crazy thing about this one is that they
- 6:32even have the original shipping box.
- 6:36Yeah, to say this is very hard to find
- 6:38is an understatement, and honestly, this
- 6:40probably would go for thousands of
- 6:42dollars online. They have it here
- 6:44sitting in their store.
- 6:46>> Oh, no. See, this is the stuff I'm such
- 6:49a sucker for.
- 6:51>> Walking around their store in the back
- 6:53was a little bit of a surprise. They
- 6:54have this area set up where you can hang
- 6:56out and play games. Or, you could watch
- 6:59a a movie, like a VHS movie from your
- 7:02childhood. Paul was like, "Ooh." He
- 7:05started digging through that. He's like
- 7:06He's like, "Oh, yeah." He He could see
- 7:08himself hanging out there for hours.
- 7:13You're not impressed?
- 7:14>> No.
- 7:15>> [laughter]
- 7:15>> Of course she's not impressed. She's my
- 7:17roommate.
- 7:19>> They actually look like they fit your
- 7:20head pretty similarly.
- 7:21>> Yeah. Now, are you impressed?
- 7:23>> I am impressed.
- 7:24>> See? There you go.
- 7:25>> Jazzy right there.
- 7:25>> Upgrade.
- 7:26>> [laughter]
- 7:27>> Jazzy.
- 7:29>> Another thing I noticed that they have a
- 7:30really solid classic Atari selection
- 7:32here. You'll find, you know, loose
- 7:35cartridges out and about, but never
- 7:37really this many in-box Atari games. So,
- 7:41that was pretty neat to see. And
- 7:43speaking of stuff in boxes, they have a
- 7:45boxed Sega Nomad. Again, something that
- 7:49I don't see very often. They also had a
- 7:51boxed TurboGrafx-16,
- 7:54as well as a couple other classic
- 7:55consoles, again in the box. So, if
- 7:59you're looking for that type of thing,
- 8:00you may want to swing by here.
- 8:02Now, if you've ever looked at your game
- 8:04collection and thought, "Oh, man, I need
- 8:06a system." You're not alone. People
- 8:09always ask what I use to catalog
- 8:10everything, and honestly, it's the CLZ
- 8:13Games app. They're sponsoring this
- 8:15video, but full transparency, I've been
- 8:17using it for many years now. What I love
- 8:20most about it is how smooth it feels.
- 8:22There's no clutter, there's no
- 8:23confusion. You just open it up and
- 8:26you're in control of your entire
- 8:27collection. One of my favorite features
- 8:30is the barcode scanner. So, say you're
- 8:32standing in the game store and you spot
- 8:34something interesting, scan it, boom,
- 8:36and you instantly see the values for
- 8:38loose, complete, or sealed copies, and
- 8:41even graded copies. It's basically like
- 8:44having a pocket-size game database.
- 8:47And speaking of databases, it's deep.
- 8:50You guys know I collect some pretty
- 8:51obscure stuff, including imports, and
- 8:53CLZ consistently recognizes games other
- 8:56apps miss. It also auto-fills everything
- 8:59from the cover art, release dates,
- 9:01publishers, even descriptions and
- 9:02trailers. Plus, you can personalize your
- 9:05collection with purchase information,
- 9:07notes, ratings, you know, all those
- 9:09nerdy details that we actually care
- 9:11about. So, if you want to get your
- 9:12collection organized, check out CLZ
- 9:14Games at the URL on the screen, or just
- 9:17search for CLZ on your app store. I'll
- 9:21also drop a link in the video
- 9:22description below, and I want to thank
- 9:24them for sponsoring this video. Recently
- 9:26on my channel, I did a video where I
- 9:28showed all of my PlayStation handhelds,
- 9:30my PSP, my Vita, stuff like that. So,
- 9:32I'm very aware that some of those
- 9:34original batteries have died, or
- 9:37sometimes even swelled up and are
- 9:39getting dangerous. So, I love it when
- 9:41stores like this have lots and lots of
- 9:43third-party battery replacements. That's
- 9:47a good thing. I always appreciate seeing
- 9:48these because it helps keeps those
- 9:51handhelds running for years to come.
- 9:54Anybody looking for those Burger King
- 9:56Xbox 360 games? Every once in a while
- 9:59I'll see these and uh they always make
- 10:01me laugh.
- 10:06>> [screaming]
- 10:08>> Down here I spot a copy of Car Battler
- 10:10Joe in the box for the Game Boy Advance
- 10:13and I'm going to say it, total hidden
- 10:14gem, man. Anybody looking for a loose
- 10:18Sega CDX? Just sitting here on the shelf
- 10:21ready to uh to find a good home. I
- 10:23already have one, but this is one of my
- 10:25favorite Sega Genesis / Sega CDs.
- 10:30I thought this was kind of interesting.
- 10:31So, this is a Resident Evil or Biohazard
- 10:34as it's called in Japan, but I'm not
- 10:37entirely sure what it is. It sort of
- 10:38looks like a press kit maybe. Not
- 10:41entirely sure. So, if you know what this
- 10:43is, please let me know down in the
- 10:44comments. And so, we kept walking around
- 10:46here checking everything out. There was
- 10:47a lot packed into this store and like I
- 10:50said, because it's the only major retro
- 10:53gaming store in the area, they get a lot
- 10:55of stuff all the time. So, if you live
- 10:58in the Silverdale area and you are into
- 11:01video games, you might want to check
- 11:02this place out because I suspect that
- 11:05there is always something cool to
- 11:06discover here.
- 11:08All right, leaving the retro gaming
- 11:09store, we briefly swung by the US Naval
- 11:13Undersea Museum. All right, this is the
- 11:16Naval Undersea Museum here in Kitsap, uh
- 11:19excuse me, in Keyport, which is really
- 11:21close to Silverdale. And it's a museum
- 11:23dedicated to basically underwater
- 11:25um submersibles and exploration uh
- 11:28through the Navy. And cool thing I is
- 11:31that it has all these actual subs out
- 11:33here like it has the Trieste II and the
- 11:34Mystic from from October and a big sale
- 11:38from another submarine. It's really
- 11:40cool. It's a small museum, but you can
- 11:41see all kind of if you're into
- 11:42underwater stuff like me, you're going
- 11:44to dig this. So, it's definitely worth a
- 11:45stop. Unfortunately, this day we don't
- 11:48have a lot of extra time, so we couldn't
- 11:50go in and explore the museum properly,
- 11:53but I did want to mention it here for
- 11:54those that are interested because it's
- 11:55actually not that far from Seattle. So,
- 11:58definitely check it out. Instead, what
- 11:59we did is we visited Fort Worden State
- 12:02Park. So, this is part of a three-part
- 12:05military installation designed to
- 12:07protect the waters of the Pacific
- 12:10Northwest from ship invasions starting
- 12:13all the way back in the 1800s.
- 12:16But, also during World War I and World
- 12:20War II. Now, this was officially
- 12:22decommissioned in the 1950s and then
- 12:25what happened was they opened it up to
- 12:27the public in 1973.
- 12:30What's wild is that none of these three
- 12:32forts that were built in this area ever
- 12:34needed to fire a shot. So, perhaps they
- 12:37worked as a deterrent. And it was super
- 12:39cool walking around the remnants of this
- 12:42fort. Now, imagine here, there used to
- 12:45be massive guns that were designed to
- 12:47just blow up enemy ships out in the
- 12:50water.
- 12:51As a matter of fact, if you ever get
- 12:53over to Whidbey Island and Fort Casey,
- 12:55one of those other forts that they built
- 12:57to protect this stuff, they do have one
- 12:59of those massive guns still sitting
- 13:01there. But, the whole thing is open to
- 13:03the public and you can just go and
- 13:05explore all these dark underground rooms
- 13:07and corridors. It's a total trip. Also,
- 13:11a couple movies were shot here including
- 13:13An Officer and a Gentleman as well as
- 13:15some of the scenes from the 2002 film
- 13:18The Ring. But, that's pretty much it for
- 13:20the first day and we're ending it in
- 13:21Port Townsend. The next morning we get
- 13:24up and Paul is going to rush back to
- 13:26Seattle for a day and I'm going to
- 13:28continue this road trip, and then we're
- 13:29going to meet up in another day. So,
- 13:32dude, where are you going?
- 13:33>> We have tickets to see the women's
- 13:34national soccer team play.
- 13:36>> Okay.
- 13:36>> And it happened to fall right on the
- 13:38same week that you decided to schedule
- 13:39this thing, so I'm going to haul ass
- 13:41back home,
- 13:43uh meet up with Z, go to the game, and
- 13:44then I'll haul ass and meet you back in
- 13:46Ocean Shores.
- 13:47>> So, right now, I'm going to drive from
- 13:49Port Townsend to Port Angeles, and that
- 13:52is about an hour drive, and as we go
- 13:55along here, you can tell that the
- 13:57weather is starting to get gloomier and
- 13:59rainier as we approach that massive
- 14:02rainforest. Port Angeles is a cute
- 14:05little town with about 20,000 people,
- 14:08and it has a really nice waterfront. It
- 14:10has a bunch of the small mom-and-pop
- 14:12shops. There's also a little arcade
- 14:15there. of people will stay here on their
- 14:17way to the Olympic National Park.
- 14:19However, it's a little early in the
- 14:21year, and it's mostly snow up that
- 14:24direction. So, I'm really just going to
- 14:26be passing through, but I did want to
- 14:28explore it a little bit, so I went down
- 14:29to the waterfront, and the first thing I
- 14:31saw was this. Is this a small-town
- 14:34thing? I don't know what it is, but I
- 14:36love seeing these community libraries,
- 14:38where locals will bring, you know, books
- 14:42there, you borrow books from it,
- 14:44everyone kind of shares books. I thought
- 14:46that's so cool. There's a Coast Guard
- 14:48station way out on this narrow piece of
- 14:51land. So, you drive through this paper
- 14:53mill, and then out to the middle of the
- 14:57water, and you park your car and can
- 14:59just hang out. It looks like a favorite
- 15:02place for birds like seagulls to kind of
- 15:04hang out.
- 15:05And as you can see, it's kind of a
- 15:06gloomy sort of day, but also still just
- 15:09gorgeous out here. I was told a lot of
- 15:11people like living in Port Angeles
- 15:13because it has a relatively low cost of
- 15:15living. It has low crime rates, plus
- 15:18it's, you know, kind of a temperate
- 15:20climate. It doesn't get too hot or too
- 15:22cold. and as you can see, it's just got
- 15:24a lot of natural beauty. So, I'm really
- 15:26glad I stopped through here. It was
- 15:27definitely a nice little time. I had
- 15:29some lunch, but now it's on to Forks.
- 15:34And Forks might sound familiar if you
- 15:36have seen the Twilight movies. That is
- 15:39the the book series and also the movies
- 15:41that kind of put the town of Forks on
- 15:44the map. This was a really fun drive
- 15:47because along the way the highway snakes
- 15:49beside this massive lake called Lake
- 15:51Crescent. And the roads were super
- 15:54twisty. I mean, again, just really fun
- 15:56to drive. Although,
- 15:58as you can see by this footage, it's
- 15:59also starting to get extremely wet,
- 16:02right? And so, I'm taking it a bit
- 16:04slower than I might otherwise. I will
- 16:08say that I'm also very thankful that I
- 16:09got new front tires before I went on
- 16:12this trip because I am definitely using
- 16:15all that grip on these roads with that
- 16:18weather.
- 16:21>> [music]
- 16:28[music]
- 16:31>> I arrive in Forks, and immediately you
- 16:33are greeted to a couple shops that have
- 16:35all the Twilight merchandise you would
- 16:38ever want. You have Twilight cups,
- 16:40stickers, t-shirts, action figures,
- 16:43posters, you name it.
- 16:46They have a bunch of Twilight stuff for
- 16:48all the fans here. I did notice that the
- 16:50town also really focuses on promoting
- 16:52Sasquatch or Bigfoot, too. I would say
- 16:55about half of the stores really focus on
- 16:57that instead of just Twilight. I would
- 17:00assume it probably has something to do
- 17:02with the popularity of those movies and
- 17:04books waning, right? Cuz it's been a
- 17:06while since they've come out. And I
- 17:08assume you probably don't need to
- 17:10license, you know, Sasquatch or Bigfoot
- 17:12stuff. So, who knows, but yeah, that's
- 17:15their two big things here, Twilight and
- 17:18Bigfoot. Now, I should probably say
- 17:19that's not the actual reason why I'm
- 17:21coming here, although I have seen the
- 17:22movies, but I'm actually staying the
- 17:24night about 20 minutes from Forks in La
- 17:27Push called Quileute Oceanside Resort.
- 17:31This is a Native American reservation
- 17:33owned and operated by the Quileute
- 17:35tribe, and the room I got,
- 17:37check this out. It's just a few feet
- 17:40from the ocean.
- 17:41This is the reason why I wanted to come
- 17:43here because I saw photos of it and I
- 17:45was like, "Oh, man. This looks
- 17:47stunning." So, and it's funny because
- 17:49again, even though it's windy and
- 17:51raining, the view is absolutely
- 17:54stunning. It's It's a bummer that Paul
- 17:56isn't here to also enjoy this. What's
- 17:59cool is that my room on the walls has
- 18:01these old photographs of the original
- 18:03tribe members using this exact same spot
- 18:08decades ago, maybe like 100 years ago or
- 18:10something. I don't know what the age of
- 18:12these photos are,
- 18:14but it's both very surreal and also very
- 18:16cool to look at these and then look
- 18:19outside my window. It gives me the sense
- 18:21that this place is very special and
- 18:23should be protected for future
- 18:25generations, right? The other thing I
- 18:27thought was pretty cool, but also you
- 18:29should be aware if you're going to stay
- 18:30here is that they don't have any
- 18:31televisions in here and no Wi-Fi.
- 18:35Which again, not a problem for me
- 18:37because I'm happy to just hang out here
- 18:39and enjoy it for a night, but yeah,
- 18:41that's something you don't typically
- 18:43find in hotels, right?
- 18:52It's day three, Wednesday, and the
- 18:54weather is looking promising today. I
- 18:57plan on heading into the Olympic
- 18:59National Forest and specifically the Hoh
- 19:02Visitor Center. And the drive into the
- 19:05park was very fun. It's twisty, it's
- 19:08turny, you go up hills, you go down
- 19:09hills. You can't go very fast, and it
- 19:11starts giving you a preview as to what
- 19:14you're going to experience. I've lived
- 19:16my entire life in the Pacific Northwest,
- 19:19and I've seen my share of thick, heavy
- 19:22forest in Washington state, right?
- 19:25But, I'll be honest. Nothing quite like
- 19:28this.
- 19:29The Olympic National Park was created in
- 19:311938 and has two goals. The first one is
- 19:34to preserve this example of a primeval
- 19:37forest.
- 19:39And the second goal is to provide
- 19:41permanent protection for all the elk
- 19:44that live here.
- 19:45Now, what makes this particular park and
- 19:47rainforest unique is that it has fairly
- 19:49mild winters and also cool summers. But,
- 19:52get this.
- 19:54It gets up to 12 ft of rain every year.
- 19:58Let me say that again.
- 20:00Every year, it gets 12 ft of rain.
- 20:04Crazy, right?
- 20:06And you can totally tell, right? Because
- 20:07I'm getting partially sunny skies, but
- 20:09also there's this constant light
- 20:12sprinkle [music] of rain also happening.
- 20:15There are several hikes that you can do
- 20:16on this side of the Hoh entrance from,
- 20:19you know, longer and more difficult ones
- 20:20to short and easy. I chose the most
- 20:22popular one, which is called the Hall of
- 20:25Mosses.
- 20:26It's about a mile long, and it takes you
- 20:28through these thick groves of
- 20:30moss-covered forest. It's It's quite
- 20:33amazing and stunning, as you can see
- 20:35from this footage. And that 12 ft of
- 20:38annual rain creates these long strands
- 20:40of moss that pretty much are everywhere
- 20:43that you look.
- 20:44But, beyond that, it's also cool to see
- 20:46these large-growth trees that have
- 20:48collapsed over the decades that are just
- 20:51slowly decaying, but also creating new
- 20:54life around them.
- 20:56I especially love finding these trees
- 20:58that have all their roots exposed from
- 21:00all the decades of the weather just
- 21:02beating on them. Again, it's kind of
- 21:04creepy, but also really cool-looking,
- 21:06right?
- 21:08Honestly, I could have spent several
- 21:09hours just wandering through this today.
- 21:12Oh man, again, not disappointed. So glad
- 21:16that I came here, and if you make it out
- 21:18this direction, you definitely want to
- 21:20visit the the rainforest. It's it's
- 21:22quite mind-blowing.
- 21:25And so with that guys, is the end of
- 21:26part one of our epic road trip over to
- 21:29the Olympic Peninsula. Coming up in part
- 21:31two, we will meet back up with Drunken
- 21:33Master Paul in Ocean Shores, and we're
- 21:35going to take his bin chicken out on the
- 21:37beach and act like a couple of
- 21:39teenagers. We'll visit Aberdeen, which
- 21:42is the home of Kurt Cobain and the
- 21:44museum dedicated to his life and music.
- 21:47We're also going to hit up a couple of
- 21:49video game stores along the way to
- 21:50Olympia. And in the next video, I'll
- 21:53share with you all the goodies we picked
- 21:55up along the way. We'll see you in part
- 21:58two, and thanks for watching.
