- 3:58Wadau, today I want us to take a walk,
- 4:01to a country I have never talked about ever since I started story telling.
- 4:05The name of this country is Yugoslavia.
- 4:08And as usual,
- 4:10I want to tell an aviation story,
- 4:13you know I really love matters aviation.
- 4:16But today's story is a great story.
- 4:22This one...
- 4:24In fact let me get started.
- 4:26I don't want to start on propaganda and stories.
- 4:29Now,
- 4:30in the year 1950,
- 4:33a girl was born
- 4:35in Yugoslavia, the capital city is called Belgrade.
- 4:39In Belgrade, a beatuful girl is born.
- 4:42The parents bring her up to a working age, 22 years.
- 4:49That is in 1972
- 4:511972...
- 4:54The girl's name is Vesna Vulovic
- 5:01Correct me if I have butchered her name.
- 5:05But Vesna decides if there's a career she wants,
- 5:09it's a career in aviation.
- 5:12I want to be a flight attendant
- 5:14To fly people from point A to point B and feel good.
- 5:17The second reason why Vesna wants this job,
- 5:20is because she wants to help people
- 5:22you know the parents were not financially well off.
- 5:26She was sure that the earlier she got working,
- 5:29the better, because she could help out at home.
- 5:33But there was a problem.
- 5:36Vesna really wanted to work in aviation.
- 5:39Miss Vulovic.
- 5:41But there was a problem, because Vesna had a health problem,
- 5:48her blood pressure was very low.
- 5:50And you know if your blood pressure is low,
- 5:53there are careers that are very risky for you.
- 5:55Aviation being one of them.
- 5:57So when she was preparing herself to go for an interview,
- 6:00they knew her blood pressure would cause problems.
- 6:03Her parents asked,
- 6:05Vesna, you know you are stuck on the aviation career
- 6:08but,
- 6:09are you sure you'll pass the interview?
- 6:11Because they will test you.
- 6:13And when they see your blood pressure is low, that's a problem,
- 6:15you'll have lost that job.
- 6:17She said, "I have volunteered to help you as my parents.
- 6:21I will do anything to ensure I pass the interview."
- 6:26So on the day of the interview,
- 6:28Vesna is very smart.
- 6:31She knew if there's something that rises someones blood pressure,
- 6:35it's boyfriends and coffee.
- 6:38(laughing)
- 6:39She doesn't have a boyfriend, what's left is coffee.
- 6:44Actually, there are three things, boyfriends, coffee and Arsenal
- 6:47But at the time Arsenal wasn't losing and she didn't have a boyfriend,
- 6:51coffee is the only thing left.
- 6:53She took several glasses of coffee
- 6:56before she went for the interview
- 6:57so that the blood pressure rises.
- 7:00So that when she's tested
- 7:01the blood pressure will be normal
- 7:04because normally, it's very low.
- 7:07So she took her coffee,
- 7:09and she went for the interview.
- 7:10She was asked, "Before we test you, is there anything you want to tell us?
- 7:14Are there any diseases and the like you'd lie us to know?
- 7:18Before we take you to the doctor for testing?"
- 7:20She said, "An illness? Me sick?
- 7:24There's no such thing
- 7:25I haven't even had the flu in the last couple of years.
- 7:28Let's get me tested."
- 7:29Sh went in and got tested,
- 7:31the coffee had properly done it's job
- 7:34So when it raised her blood pressure,
- 7:36it made her blood pressure to be normal.
- 7:39They tested her and found that everything was right.
- 7:42And in 1972,
- 7:44she got employed in the National Carrier of Yugoslavia.
- 7:49I think the abbreviations for the Yugoslavian airlines is JAT.
- 7:54In a plane that's called Flight 367.
- 8:03She went there as a flight attendant.
- 8:06This is what we wanted.
- 8:09She does her job well...
- 8:12Wadau, did an year pass by?
- 8:17They say, if there is the safest mode of transport
- 8:23its airplane transport.
- 8:24In fact,
- 8:27you are 400 times more likely,
- 8:30to die on the way to the airport.
- 8:34As opposed to inside an actual plane
- 8:38The road to the airport will kill you,
- 8:40not the actual plane.
- 8:42The road, 400 times, 400% chance.
- 8:46Here is where you'll go to the afterlife.
- 8:49It got to a time when,
- 8:51she was at home relaxing.
- 8:53She knew, today, I should just be relaxing.
- 8:56But she soon gets a call,
- 8:58she is asked, "Vesna, where are you?
- 9:01Come, you should be at work."
- 9:02She wonders,
- 9:04Should I be at work today?
- 9:05She confirms on her timetable and sees,
- 9:08she sees she's not supposed to.
- 9:09But since they called for me.
- 9:11Let me go.
- 9:13So Vesna leaves home,
- 9:14she gets to the airport,
- 9:17(sighs)
- 9:18She survived the 400% chance.
- 9:20She didn't die there.
- 9:22She got to the airport.
- 9:25She quickly signed in
- 9:27She was told,
- 9:29Your plane is coming, when it arrives,
- 9:33you'll go with it back home to Yugoslavia
- 9:39She was in a place called Copenhagen,
- 9:43in Denmark
- 9:45You know those flight attendants are everywhere
- 9:48Today they are here, tomorrow they are here, tomorrow they are in Zagreb, Croatia.
- 9:53They are everywhere.
- 9:54So this plane,
- 9:56Is from Stockholm-Sweden
- 9:58all the way to Yugoslavia, what was the capital?
- 10:04What is the Capital of Yugoslavia?
- 10:08Belgrade
- 10:09I said it when we started, Belgrade.
- 10:10It should come from Stockholm Sweden,
- 10:13to Belgrade Yugoslavia.
- 10:15But it was to make two stop overs,
- 10:17There's one stop in Copenhagen, Denmark
- 10:21and the second stop over in Zagreb Ukraine.
- 10:25No, Zagreb Croatia.
- 10:28So,
- 10:30This lady, Vesna
- 10:32is in Copenhagen, in the first stop over.
- 10:34Copenhagen
- 10:36So the plane should come from Stockholm
- 10:40It was to come to Copenhagen
- 10:42The crew to get off,
- 10:44Vesna's crew to come in.
- 10:46They'll fly the plane to Zagreb Croatia
- 10:49then to Belgrade Yugoslavia.
- 10:51Are we okay to that point?
- 10:53Very nice.
- 10:55So Vesna gets to the airport,
- 10:57She realizes there was a mistake.
- 11:01It was true, she wasn't supposed to be on that flight.
- 11:05There was another flight attendant,
- 11:07also called Vesna, who should be there.
- 11:10But it's too late to ask her to go back home
- 11:13Call the other Vesna to come, no.
- 11:15She decided to take that trip,
- 11:18Belgrade where we are going,
- 11:21that's home.
- 11:22My parents are in Belgrade,
- 11:23it's okay I'll go and greet them.
- 11:26It was okay.
- 11:27The crew that she should travel with is here.
- 11:32They are waiting
- 11:33for the plane to leave Stockholm,
- 11:35to come and land in Copenhagen
- 11:37The crew to get off, for them to come in
- 11:40For them to get to Zagreb then Belgrade.
- 11:44So after waiting for about an hour,
- 11:49they see the plane landing.
- 11:51So from where they are standing they can see the tarmac.
- 11:55They can see how the plane is landing,
- 11:57the plane arrives, it stops.
- 12:00the airstair comes out.
- 12:03people get off.
- 12:04But among the passengers,
- 12:07one looks visibly angry
- 12:09very angry.
- 12:10He is throwing his arms out of anger.
- 12:13I don't know what angered him, but the guy is not okay.
- 12:18And Vesna takes note,
- 12:19but that's the nature of passengers, no problem.
- 12:23All passengers deplane,
- 12:25A five member crew, Vesna, 2 other flight attendants, pilot and the co-pilot.
- 12:33They board the plane and so do the other passengers,
- 12:39and the plane takes off from Copenhagen,
- 12:41heading to Zagreb Croatia,
- 12:43After the Zagreb, Croatia stop-over,
- 12:46It would fly to Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
- 12:51Everyone is seated with their seat-belts on.
- 12:54Everything is set, they are waiting for push-back
- 12:56for the plane to go into the runway and fly away.
- 13:02It takes off well, goes to the run way safely
- 13:05it gets the take off clearance and takes off.
- 13:10Without any problems or challenges.
- 13:14The flight is fine.
- 13:15They get to the cruising altitude.
- 13:19Once they get to the cruising altitude,
- 13:20they switch off the seat-belt light.
- 13:23The hostess,
- 13:24"You want coffee or tea?"
- 13:27Trevor Noah said no matter the turbulence,
- 13:30The upper part doesn't shake, only the lower part.
- 13:34"What would you like to drink, coffee or tea?"
- 13:37They serve you tea in that turbulence
- 13:39They are good, they have mastered the work.
- 13:41So they get to the cruising altitude,
- 13:46they walk around with the trays,
- 13:47Carrying coffee or tea, coffee or juice.
- 13:50They walk until it gets to the 45th minute.
- 13:55The 45th minute...
- 13:58There starts some hold ups.
- 14:01It's like something is not okay.
- 14:04I don't know if it's a smell from somewhere,
- 14:07or something is burning, I'm not sure what it is.
- 14:10But of the 46th minute of the flight,
- 14:15boom!
- 14:16One hell of an explosion.
- 14:19So, there was a bomb in the cargo hold, right below.
- 14:23It blew up when the plane was 33,330 feet in the air.
- 14:28It split the plane into three parts,
- 14:32the cockpit, the mid section and the tail part.
- 14:35The whole plane had disintegrated
- 14:37When a plane disintegrates in that manner,
- 14:39the first thing that happens is de-pressurization.
- 14:41When depressurization happens,
- 14:44everyone there gets ejected
- 14:47(flying sounds)
- 14:48from the plane.
- 14:51Wadau,
- 14:52when people are being ejected, left right and center,
- 14:56since this plane blew up and it took a dive like this,
- 15:00the diving rate made the trolley, the coffee or tea one
- 15:06it went back and found Vesna standing
- 15:09it hit her and threw her to the back of the plane.
- 15:13So as the plane goes down,
- 15:15she is pinned by the trolley,
- 15:17The coffee or tea trolley,
- 15:19it has pinned her, she cannot go anywhere.
- 15:22The plane is completely depressurized.
- 15:24If she didn't have a heart condition,
- 15:28if her blood pressure was normal,
- 15:30at this point, all her blood vessels would have burst.
- 15:34But since her blood pressure was too low,
- 15:36it didn't rise to the level that her blood vessels would burst.
- 15:42So that saved her.
- 15:43Remember, she is 33,330 feet flying to the ground.
- 15:50Her colleagues had been flown out of the plane,
- 15:52no one had been left.
- 15:54It's just her and her trolley which had pinned her to the wall.
- 15:57Quickly approaching the ground.
- 15:59When they hit the ground, they meet a canopy of trees
- 16:02and on the ground, huge amounts of snow, I don't know how many feet.
- 16:08They came and cleared everything,
- 16:10(clearing sound)
- 16:11to the ground.
- 16:13And it was silent
- 16:16They had landed in the Croatian territory.
- 16:22They were on route to Zagreb.
- 16:25Everyone on that plane, died, gone!
- 16:29I don't know if the body parts were found.
- 16:32But in a small village, in Croatia,
- 16:36a man is at home and he hears a flying sound.
- 16:40Something fell in a bush close to the house.
- 16:44He goes out quickly to find a plane wreckage,
- 16:48That had fallen close to his home.
- 16:50After a while, he hears voices.
- 16:54♪Croatian girl♪
- 16:55Okay, he hears voices coming from the bush.
- 17:02He quickly runs there to find,
- 17:04a lady there in light blue uniform that attendants wear,
- 17:09and it was soaked in blood from head to toe.
- 17:12He asked himself, "My God,
- 17:14this person fell from an accident, is still alive and is screaming?"
- 17:19Luckily,
- 17:20this villager was not a plumber.
- 17:25He was not an electrician, no.
- 17:29This was a World War II veteran,
- 17:32and in the war he was a military doctor.
- 17:37So he had the know-how to keep this lady alive,
- 17:42until the paramedics arrive.
- 17:44So he quickly went there,
- 17:47acting quickly.
- 17:48Covering the wounds, stabilizing the lady
- 17:51ensuring she doesn't lose consciousness until the ambulance arrives.
- 17:56The ambulance quickly comes and gets in the trees.
- 18:00They arrived and found Vesna,
- 18:03they quickly put her on stretchers,
- 18:05they strapped her and put her in the ambulance.
- 18:08The went to hospital and tried their best to save Vesna.
- 18:12Upon investigation, they found that Vesna had fractured her skull,
- 18:18Vesna had broken several ribs,
- 18:20Vesna had shuttered her pelvis,
- 18:23Vesna had broken both her legs.
- 18:25She was in a bad condition.
- 18:29So immediately they got her to hospital, I don't think a day passed by,
- 18:32she went into a coma.
- 18:34She was in a coma for one month,
- 18:37But God is miraculous,
- 18:39the doctors kept trying with Vesna
- 18:42they sewed her everywhere and plastered her everywhere,
- 18:47even though she couldn't walk, she woke up.
- 18:51So when she woke up,
- 18:53people came and tried to ask her some questions.
- 18:56What might have happened?
- 18:58unfortunately Vesna had no memory
- 19:01of anything that happened from the passenger boarding the plane,
- 19:06to the time she woke up
- 19:09She couldn't remember anything that happened in the middle
- 19:12She couldn't remember the bomb explosion,
- 19:14she couldn't remember falling from 33,330 feet.
- 19:19She couldn't remember being saved by the military doctor in the forest.
- 19:25She only remembered before the passengers boarded
- 19:28and now when she woke up.
- 19:31But they slowly worked with her
- 19:35she slowly got better, then she remembered,
- 19:38wait a minute.
- 19:40Before the plane arrived,
- 19:45the crew that was to leave,
- 19:48for us to come in and take over this journey,
- 19:51from Copenhagen to Zagreb.
- 19:56Someone came out very angry.
- 20:01I suspect this person is the start of all these fracas.
- 20:07Because when he got in he had a briefcase,
- 20:11and it was placed in the cargo and he got out without it.
- 20:14I think that's the story that was going about at the time, I'm not sure.
- 20:19But she remembers clearly there was a man who was very upset.
- 20:22And she suspects that man placed the bomb there.
- 20:27Turns out, it's true!
- 20:28People from Croatia don't like people from Yugoslavia.
- 20:31There were Croatian nationalists who had decided whatever happens, happens.
- 20:35We want to hurt people from Yugoslavia.
- 20:37So this day that they planted a bomb in the plane Vesna was in,
- 20:41the same day they placed another bomb in a train.
- 20:44In total, 128 people from Yugoslavia died.
- 20:4828 were in the plane, 100 were in the train.
- 20:52There was some pride and some fights happening discretely.
- 20:56And that's the reason, Vesna's plane was bombed.
- 21:0033,330 feet
- 21:02But who is God?
- 21:03Vesna survived
- 21:05Vesna, in fact after 10 months
- 21:08Things at the coffee or tea,
- 21:12her pelvis healed.
- 21:14Both her legs healed,
- 21:16she started walking after 10 months.
- 21:18In fact,
- 21:19Vesna healed so well,
- 21:21she re-applied to go back to work as a flight attendant.
- 21:26They told her, "No, you are now joking.
- 21:28After what you have been through, we can't.
- 21:30Do this, we will give you a job
- 21:32but take a desk job,
- 21:34you have been through enough."
- 21:35So she got a desk job,
- 21:38but I hear eventually
- 21:41she got to a point she didn't get along with the Yugoslavian government.
- 21:46She became an activist.
- 21:48Soon her activism led to her being fired in the airline she was working in.
- 21:53But she pushed on with activism because the president at the time,
- 21:57was doing things they didn't agree on.
- 22:02But Vesna is a high spirited person.
- 22:05After the accident when she was 22 years old,
- 22:07she lived for another 44 years.
- 22:09Unfortunately she died in 2016
- 22:12when she was 66 years old.
- 22:17And that is our story today, of a heroine who survived against all odds.
- 22:23Falling from 33,330 feet,
- 22:27to the ground.
- 22:28And she lived to tell the tale.
- 22:31Let us just clap for her.
- 22:33That's someone who doesn't want to die.
- 22:36It's old age that made let to her kicking the bucket.
- 22:40But her will power to live.
- 22:43Vesna's is unmatched.
- 22:47Wadau, that marks the end.
- 22:48I hope you really enjoyed it.
