- 0:33first thessalonians we're gonna be in
- 0:36chapter 2 we started the 1st
- 0:38thessalonians last wednesday night we
- 0:40had a introduction and we looked at
- 0:42chapter 1 so just for those of you who
- 0:45weren't here the church at thessalonica
- 0:48is the name of the city it's located in
- 0:51modern greece today that city is called
- 0:54Salonika it's a beautiful city right on
- 0:58on the Aegean Sea and this is the place
- 1:01where Paul planted a church around 51 52
- 1:05AD Acts chapter 17 records that and it
- 1:10tells us that he only spent three weeks
- 1:12there after he started this church
- 1:14people got saved and was mostly Gentiles
- 1:17made up also of some Jews who believed
- 1:19in Jesus as a result of Paul's preaching
- 1:22and after only three weeks there this
- 1:24little church starts but Paul is hustled
- 1:28out of town because some Jews who don't
- 1:30like the message of Jesus have stirred
- 1:33up a riot in in Thessalonica and so Paul
- 1:37basically is hustled away in the middle
- 1:39of the night fifty miles to another city
- 1:41called Berea the same juice or upset
- 1:44with him in Thessalonica go the 50 miles
- 1:47to pursue him in Berea so then after
- 1:49Berea Paul has moved on to Athens where
- 1:51he continues his ministry and so this is
- 1:54a second missionary journey he's he
- 1:56founded this church around 51 52 AD as I
- 1:58said and then from Corinth about a year
- 2:01later now it's 52 53 AD he writes this
- 2:05letter here to the Thessalonians this is
- 2:08the first of a couple letters thus we
- 2:10have first Thessalonians and then
- 2:12following this is 2nd Thessalonians and
- 2:15as I mentioned last week this book is
- 2:17divided really into three themes he's
- 2:20going to talk how about how trials will
- 2:22come that's chapters 1 2 & 3 he's going
- 2:26to mention how temptations will come
- 2:28that's chapter 4 and then he ends this
- 2:31whole thing by saying and by the way
- 2:32Jesus will come to and that's the second
- 2:35coming of Christ and that's primarily
- 2:37what he talks about in chapter 4 and 5
- 2:40but actually the reference to the second
- 2:42coming of Christ is at the end of every
- 2:44single chapter so 5 chapters and we've
- 2:46mentioned last week you can take a
- 2:48glance yourself now at the last verse of
- 2:50every single chapter in this letter
- 2:52there's some reference to the second
- 2:55coming of Christ that's where we left
- 2:57off at the end of chapter 1 you can just
- 2:59see verse 10 and to wait for his son
- 3:02from heaven whom he raised from the dead
- 3:04Jesus who rescues us from the coming
- 3:07wrath so that's where we left off let's
- 3:10have a word of Prayer and then we'll
- 3:11take a look here at chapters 2 and 3
- 3:13tonight so let's pray first Lord we
- 3:16thank you that you would give us your
- 3:18word that we can read and understand and
- 3:21and look forward to particularly your
- 3:23second coming and as we go through first
- 3:26Thessalonians may our hearts be
- 3:28strengthened and may we look with
- 3:31expectancy and with joy toward your
- 3:34second coming and we just thank you that
- 3:36you love us and that you've given us
- 3:38your word so I pray now as we dive into
- 3:40these chapters that you will bear
- 3:42witness with our spirit you will help us
- 3:43to understand the truth of your word and
- 3:45then you would help us to grow in our
- 3:47faith Lord and we just thank you and
- 3:49give you praise honor and glory in Jesus
- 3:51name and everyone said amen so here in
- 3:55chapter 2 if you'll look with me in
- 3:57verse 1 Paul writes here you know
- 3:59brothers that our visit to you was not a
- 4:01failure
- 4:03literally the Greek means without effect
- 4:05King James says it was not in vain he
- 4:09says it wasn't a failure it was not
- 4:11without effect we had previously
- 4:13suffered and been insulted in Philippi
- 4:17as you know but with the help of our God
- 4:19we dared to tell you his gospel notice
- 4:22it's his Gospels God's Gospels the good
- 4:25news of the Lord in spite of strong
- 4:27opposition for the appeal we make does
- 4:29not spring from error or impure motives
- 4:32nor be trying to trick you on the
- 4:35contrary we speak as
- 4:36then approved by God to be entrusted
- 4:39with the gospel we are not trying to
- 4:41please men but God who tests our hearts
- 4:45underlying that we'll come back to that
- 4:46who tests our hearts you know we never
- 4:49used flattery nor did we put on a mask
- 4:51to cover up greed God is our witness we
- 4:55were not looking for praise from men not
- 4:57from you or anyone else so let's pause
- 5:00there and understand what he's doing
- 5:02here again you know Paul from time to
- 5:04time is going to kind of give his
- 5:08credentials he's gonna try to let them
- 5:10know about the legitimacy of his
- 5:12ministry because wherever Paul went he
- 5:16had opposition and because of the
- 5:18opposition that he often sustained no
- 5:21matter what church he was at no matter
- 5:22what church he planted there were some
- 5:24who would lean towards the opposition
- 5:27and and then lose lose confidence in the
- 5:30message that Paul was preaching so from
- 5:33time to time this is one of them Paul
- 5:34has to say look let me just explain to
- 5:36you the legitimacy of my ministry and to
- 5:38be honest with you in these first six
- 5:41verses of chapter two this is these are
- 5:43great bullet points for anybody who
- 5:45wants to go in the ministry because he's
- 5:47talking here about these are some of the
- 5:49important things that defined my
- 5:51ministry and he starts out here it
- 5:54reminding them in verse two that we
- 5:58previously suffered and had been
- 5:59insulted in Philippi and in Acts chapter
- 6:0217 you don't need to turn there but in
- 6:04acts 17 when the church at Thessalonica
- 6:06was planted he had just come from
- 6:08Philippi and his time and Philip I had
- 6:11been met with severe opposition he had
- 6:13been beaten he had been flogged that he
- 6:16had been humiliated and then he was
- 6:17thrown in prison now as many of you know
- 6:20from the book of Acts there was a great
- 6:22result to his having been thrown in
- 6:24prison which is the Philippian jailer
- 6:25gets saved and many other prisoners do
- 6:28as well because God brings us wonderful
- 6:30earthquake and the prison gates are
- 6:32opened up and the Philippian jailer this
- 6:34Roman soldiers ready to kill himself
- 6:36because in in first century Rome if you
- 6:40were a Roman officer whatever happened
- 6:43in terms of the people under your watch
- 6:45you would suffer for and so here is this
- 6:48jailer and
- 6:49these prisoners are ready to run free
- 6:52because of this earthquake that's opened
- 6:53up the prison gates and Paul is there
- 6:55and saying you know don't kill yourself
- 6:56listen and he preaches the gospel he's
- 6:58taking on into the home of this
- 7:00Philippian jailer preaches the good news
- 7:01but as a result of the gospel that he
- 7:04preached and Philip I he had been
- 7:06severely flawed is what the Bible tells
- 7:08us in Acts he had been severely flogged
- 7:11and in prison by the time then he gets
- 7:13here to Thessalonica I mean you have to
- 7:15bear in mind he's still bearing the
- 7:17marks of the flogging on his back from
- 7:20Philippi
- 7:20I mean he hasn't he hasn't even scabbed
- 7:22over at this point so he's coming
- 7:24bearing marks of having been whipped and
- 7:27flogged and and you know the the roman
- 7:30flagellum i mean it was leather whips
- 7:33with little pieces of glass and and and
- 7:35metal and when they would whip someone I
- 7:38mean it would it would shred that their
- 7:40backs literally and so here Paul comes
- 7:42into Thessalonica so one of the things
- 7:44he's saying here basically to add a
- 7:47little street cred to his ministry is
- 7:49listen you don't go around getting
- 7:51whipped for something that's a lie
- 7:53okay I've endured suffering for this
- 7:56this is how much I believe in the truth
- 7:57of the gospel I know this to be true God
- 8:00is real God is powerful God saves God
- 8:03redeems I've been beaten for this I've
- 8:06suffered for this so please note you
- 8:09know people aren't every day just
- 8:11whipped for something that isn't you
- 8:13know if it's a lie
- 8:15you'd be quick to cry uncle but because
- 8:18he endured the suffering it's testimony
- 8:20the fact which is true about all the
- 8:22martyrs of the first century you know
- 8:24people don't die for a lie so Paul is
- 8:27saying here to the Thessalonians listen
- 8:29I was whipped
- 8:30I came to you severely beaten from
- 8:32Philip I that's how much I believe in
- 8:35what I'm sharing with you but in summary
- 8:37of verses 1 through 6 Paul's defense of
- 8:40his ministry and again these are good
- 8:42little pointers for anybody who wants to
- 8:44go in the ministry in general he's
- 8:45saying about his ministry no dr. Lehrer
- 8:49no impure motives he says there we
- 8:52didn't try to trick you no deception he
- 8:55said no attempt was made to please man
- 8:56but only God we didn't use flattery
- 8:59it wasn't about greed we were trying to
- 9:01get your money and there was no attempt
- 9:03to get
- 9:03from people that's the summary of what
- 9:06we just read there verses one through
- 9:07six and so these are commendable things
- 9:10and these should be the you know the the
- 9:14aspirations of of everybody who's in in
- 9:17ministry that there would be no error
- 9:19and doctorate and no impure motives no
- 9:22deception and there's just so much of
- 9:24this kind of thing going around
- 9:25unfortunately in some circles no attempt
- 9:30to please man but only God no flattery
- 9:32no greed no attempt to get praise from
- 9:33people so it's all for the Lord and for
- 9:36his glory and so Paul is just wonderful
- 9:39about this he's like you know listen I'm
- 9:42just the vessel I I'm not here to try to
- 9:44get your money I'm not using flattery
- 9:46I'm not I'm not in any way trying to you
- 9:49know get praise from you that's all
- 9:51about the Lord but is that this is a
- 9:53great word of caution for anyone in the
- 9:56ministry or who wants to go in the
- 9:57ministry now I asked you to make note of
- 10:01verse 4 where he talks about how we're
- 10:04not trying to please men but God who God
- 10:07tests our hearts God tests our hearts so
- 10:11that's the question why does God test
- 10:13our hearts Paul makes mention of this
- 10:17and this is a true statement
- 10:19God does test our hearts why there are
- 10:24three reasons and for those of you
- 10:26taking notes you might want to jot these
- 10:27three down because if you're not
- 10:29presently in a test you will be if
- 10:33you're not presently in one you will be
- 10:35and one of the reasons God tests our
- 10:37hearts number one is to expose what's in
- 10:40my heart so here's the reference it's
- 10:42Deuteronomy 8 verse 2 God said remember
- 10:46how the Lord your God led you all the
- 10:48way in the desert these 40 years to
- 10:50Humble you and to test you in order to
- 10:54know what was in your heart whether or
- 10:56not you would keep his commands now the
- 10:59context of course of Deuteronomy 8 2 is
- 11:01when the Israelites were wandering
- 11:02through the wilderness for 40 years on
- 11:04their way from Egypt where they had been
- 11:06slaves for 400 years to Israel the
- 11:08promised land but along the way for 40
- 11:11years God is testing them to find out
- 11:15what is in their hearts
- 11:17now it wasn't so that God could learn
- 11:19what was in their hearts he tests them
- 11:21so that they can learn what is in their
- 11:23hearts God knows everything God knows
- 11:27everything in our hearts there's no
- 11:28mystery to God concerning what's in our
- 11:29heart God knows our hearts but sometimes
- 11:33we don't sometimes it takes some
- 11:37stressor or some event in life that will
- 11:43expose what's in our hearts and so the
- 11:47wilderness experience for the Israelites
- 11:49was an opportunity to expose what was in
- 11:51their hearts and they started grumbling
- 11:54and complaining sort of murmuring
- 11:56against God and they they weren't they
- 12:01weren't loyal to him
- 12:02they were rebellious against him and so
- 12:04God knew you're never gonna be my
- 12:05commands if you aren't thankful for for
- 12:09my deliverance of slavery after 400
- 12:11years you're not gonna be obeying the
- 12:13rest of my commands so he tests them in
- 12:15the wilderness an entire generation dies
- 12:17is a very tragic story entire generation
- 12:19dies off in the wilderness and only
- 12:20their children in addition Joshua and
- 12:23Caleb from the original generation but
- 12:25only otherwise the children are going to
- 12:27enter in the Promised Land because the
- 12:28adults the parents failed the tests God
- 12:31tested their heart was exposed was their
- 12:33own complaining critical spirit
- 12:35ungrateful Ness
- 12:37toward God their rebellion in their
- 12:39hearts and God allowed them the the
- 12:42pressure of the wilderness to expose
- 12:44those in their heart listen anything
- 12:46that's in a vessel will be made manifest
- 12:50when that vessel gets cracked so you
- 12:53have some some liquid in a jar you don't
- 12:56know what it is crack the jar what's
- 12:57inside will come out when you when you
- 13:00get cracked all of us are cracked pots
- 13:04from time to time and when you get
- 13:06cracked the real you comes out doesn't
- 13:09it and there can be little ways that God
- 13:13will test us little ways like traffic
- 13:19like the DMV demonic motor vehicles you
- 13:24ever been into that place just can't
- 13:27stand going in that place little things
- 13:30will test you little little tiny things
- 13:32will test you and then the big things
- 13:35the big things will test you an illness
- 13:39a divorce death of a loved one
- 13:49bankruptcy all kinds of things will test
- 13:54us and in those moments have you ever
- 13:57been startled by what's in your heart
- 14:00some situation that comes along and you
- 14:04didn't realize some of the ugly stuff
- 14:07that was in your heart until it got
- 14:11exposed through some test and sometimes
- 14:15God will allow those tests because he
- 14:19wants us to get rid of what's in our
- 14:21heart that we don't even know until the
- 14:24test reveals it so sometimes he tests us
- 14:28to expose what's in my heart
- 14:30other times he tests us to refine us
- 14:33this is psalm 66 10 for you o God tested
- 14:38us you refined us like silver the
- 14:43process of refining precious metal is to
- 14:47heat it up in a cauldron and then the
- 14:50intensity of the heat causes the
- 14:52impurities to come to the surface so
- 14:55that it could be skimmed off it's called
- 14:57the dross and it's only the result of
- 15:01intense heat that refines the precious
- 15:06metal because only then through the
- 15:08intensity of the heat is the dross
- 15:11removed so sometimes it's a matter of
- 15:14refining us because God wants to just
- 15:17purify our lives and he wants to kind of
- 15:20skim off some stuff and so it's that
- 15:23refining process thirdly it's to mature
- 15:26us in James 1 verses 2 to 4 it says this
- 15:30consider appeared
- 15:31my brother's whenever you face trials of
- 15:34many kinds because you know that the
- 15:36testing of your faith develops or
- 15:40produces perseverance and perseverance
- 15:43must finish its work so that you may be
- 15:45mature and complete not lacking anything
- 15:48so sometimes tests come just simply to
- 15:51make us stronger and to mature us in our
- 15:54faith I remember years ago Terry and I
- 15:56were down visiting in Savannah Georgia
- 15:58and they have those beautiful savannah
- 16:01live oak trees that had that Spanish
- 16:06hanging moss from the branches we've all
- 16:08seen these trees and and I noticed how
- 16:12twisted the trees were and how they
- 16:15always were leaning in a certain
- 16:17direction so I asked a guy who was there
- 16:19like you know what's the deal with these
- 16:20with these trees and the whole Spanish
- 16:22hanging moss they're beautiful and but
- 16:24I've noticed that they're all they're
- 16:26all twisted and they're leaning in a
- 16:28certain direction he said oh yes sir he
- 16:30said they're leaning towards the
- 16:32atlantic I said what why are they
- 16:34leaning towards the Atlantic he says
- 16:35because the strong winds that come off
- 16:37the ocean Buffett against the trees and
- 16:40the trees have learned to lean against
- 16:43the wind and they become strengthened
- 16:47because of that as some some of the
- 16:49ancient American sailing vessels were
- 16:52built the hulls were built out of the
- 16:55live oaks of Savannah Georgia because of
- 16:57the strong sturdiness that they had
- 16:59developed like because they were always
- 17:02resisting the wind that would come off
- 17:04of the Atlantic that's the way it is for
- 17:07us you know you you're gonna lean into
- 17:11what buffets you but it'll make you
- 17:14stronger for it and the Lord will
- 17:16sometimes use those tests to motivate us
- 17:19into maturity
- 17:21well Paul continues here look at look in
- 17:25verse seven he says as apostles of
- 17:27Christ we could have been a burden to
- 17:29you but we were gentle among you like a
- 17:32mother circled circle mother King James
- 17:34Bible says like a nurse it's literally
- 17:37like a nursing mother
- 17:38we were gentle among you like like a
- 17:40mother caring for her little children we
- 17:43loved you so much that we were delighted
- 17:44to
- 17:44shared with you not only the gospel of
- 17:46God but our lives as well because you
- 17:48had become so dear to us surely you
- 17:50remember brothers our toll our toil and
- 17:53hardship we work night and day in order
- 17:56not to be a burden to anyone while we
- 17:58preached the gospel of God to you
- 18:00talking about there not wanting to be a
- 18:01financial burden so they worked he
- 18:03didn't just rely on their offerings
- 18:05because he didn't want them to this
- 18:07young little church getting started
- 18:09you'd want to be a burden to them and
- 18:10then in verse 10 he says you are
- 18:12witnesses and so is God of how holy
- 18:14righteous and blameless we were among
- 18:16you who believed for you know that we
- 18:18dealt with each of you as a father
- 18:20Circle that word as a father deals with
- 18:23his own children
- 18:24encouraging comforting and urging you to
- 18:27live lives worthy of God who calls you
- 18:30into his kingdom and glory so
- 18:33interestingly here Paul Paul writes here
- 18:36and he talks very affectionately very
- 18:38warmly to them and he says to them that
- 18:40his ministry there at the Church of
- 18:42Thessalonica was and he compares to two
- 18:46things it was like caring like a mom and
- 18:48motivating like a dad he says you know
- 18:51we were gentle among you and he and he
- 18:53speaks very affectionately about how
- 18:54like a mother is gentle he says I was
- 18:57gentle among you caring like a mother
- 18:59caring for her little children we loved
- 19:01you so much he just you know he just
- 19:03speaks here very affectionately like a
- 19:05nurturing caring mom and and again
- 19:09specifically King James says like a
- 19:10nurse because it means like a nursing
- 19:12mother and so you know the scene of a
- 19:15nursing mother one of the most tender
- 19:17just gentle expressions of love and
- 19:21affection and care and he says this is
- 19:24how I was to you like like a mother in
- 19:27in that regard and you know just such a
- 19:31beautiful just such a beautiful thing
- 19:34about how just nurturing and caring a
- 19:37mother is you know Terry nursed all
- 19:42three of our kids and it was wonderful
- 19:44in many regards a it was cheap you know
- 19:49bottles that formulas expensive and be
- 19:52because in the middle of the night when
- 19:54they were crying I'd be like they want
- 19:56you
- 19:57and you know they need you so now we had
- 20:00this thing where I'd go I'd go get the
- 20:02babies and then you know so it was kind
- 20:04of a partner but then that then I was
- 20:05done yeah I'll go get him
- 20:07but then I'm done but it's a it's this
- 20:10very gentle you know idea here of just a
- 20:14nursing mom loving her child and this is
- 20:19the way Paul says I was in rut one
- 20:21regard to you and then he says he was
- 20:25also like a father and and he talks here
- 20:29about how I with you like a father deals
- 20:32with his own children and he uses these
- 20:34three words in verse 12 encouraging
- 20:36comforting and urging so I just kind of
- 20:38summarized it with the word motivating
- 20:39like a dad and sometimes the dad
- 20:41motivates with encouragement sometimes
- 20:43with comfort also and sometimes urging
- 20:45you know exhorting challenging his
- 20:49children and the combination of both is
- 20:52very beautiful here because here on the
- 20:53one hand you have like a mother dealing
- 20:56with their children a very caring
- 20:57nurturing way you have a dad who deals
- 20:59with his children in a motivating way in
- 21:01a challenging way and it's not to say
- 21:03that that dads don't also you know
- 21:06nurture and care and it's not to say
- 21:08that moms don't also motivate and urge
- 21:11but it's the idea here that in in a
- 21:14partnership how they complement each
- 21:15other and Paul and using this language
- 21:18about how like moms and dads treat and
- 21:21love and care for and encourage and
- 21:22motivate their kids this is the
- 21:24beautiful aspect of ministry to there
- 21:27are some times there are some times when
- 21:29you'll come to church for example and
- 21:30you just need kind of that comforting
- 21:32message you just need like somebody just
- 21:35speak to me out of God's Word a message
- 21:38of nurture and care I've had one of
- 21:40those hard days I've had a hard week
- 21:42I've had a hard life and I just need
- 21:44somebody to just love on me like a mom
- 21:48loves her kids and nurtures her children
- 21:51and sometimes God's Word speaks to us
- 21:52that way doesn't it there's some parts
- 21:54of God's worth very loving very
- 21:56comforting very very caring towards us
- 21:59and then there are other times you come
- 22:01to church and you know you and you're
- 22:03gonna have a Bible study and you're
- 22:04gonna read some verses that have to do
- 22:06with being motivated and challenged
- 22:09and urged sometimes to do to do life in
- 22:12a way that you you wouldn't normally
- 22:14want to do because you're too
- 22:15comfortable where you are and sometimes
- 22:16you could read the Bible and the Bible
- 22:17kind of kicks you in the pants from time
- 22:19to time and challenges you and we need
- 22:21both you know I'm thankful when I take
- 22:24my Bible and I have some quiet time with
- 22:25the Lord that there are times he speaks
- 22:27to me very tenderly like a mom who cares
- 22:29for children and there are other times
- 22:31he speaks to me like a dad just kind of
- 22:33you know kicking me in the pants a
- 22:36little bit
- 22:36and challenging me and motivating me to
- 22:39write living and it's a combination of
- 22:41both we need both of those things and so
- 22:44Paul says I gave you both of those
- 22:46things like a mom caring and nurturing
- 22:49like a dad motivating and urging you to
- 22:53live lives worthy of God who calls you
- 22:56into his kingdom and glory verse 13 and
- 22:57we also thank God continually because
- 23:00when you receive the Word of God which
- 23:02you heard from us you accepted it not as
- 23:04the word of men but as it actually is
- 23:06the Word of God which is at work in you
- 23:10who believe for you know for you
- 23:13brothers became imitators of God's
- 23:15churches in Judea which are in Christ
- 23:17Jesus you suffered from your own
- 23:19countrymen the same things those
- 23:21churches suffered from the Jews who
- 23:23killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets
- 23:24and also drove us out they displease God
- 23:28and are hostile to all men in their
- 23:30effort to keep us from speaking to the
- 23:31Gentiles so that they may be saved in
- 23:33this way they always heap up their sins
- 23:36to the limit the wrath of God has come
- 23:38upon them at last so he speaks to the
- 23:41church here and he says basically look
- 23:42you know you guys have endured some
- 23:44oppression yourselves which apparently
- 23:46happened even after Paul was driven out
- 23:47of town by these Judaizers who didn't
- 23:49like the message of Jesus Paul knows
- 23:51what it is to suffer and he says to them
- 23:53and you know what it is - because at
- 23:55some point they also for their faith
- 23:57endured suffering and hardship and
- 23:59opposition from people who didn't like
- 24:01Christ in them either and he encourages
- 24:03them in this regard but I want you to
- 24:05notice with me how he holds in such high
- 24:07regard
- 24:08the Word of God because he says I gave
- 24:11you scripture I gave you the gospel he
- 24:13says you accepted it in verse 13 you
- 24:16accepted it not as the word of men he
- 24:19says but as it actually is the word
- 24:21of God which is at work in you who
- 24:23believe so just wanted to pause there
- 24:25and just kind of reiterate the fact that
- 24:27the Word of God is a reference to the
- 24:28Bible now now Paul doesn't have the
- 24:30completed passage of the New Testament
- 24:32he's he's part of God's vessel in
- 24:34compiling the New Testament but at this
- 24:36point is he's only solely talking of the
- 24:38Old Testament Scriptures but that's what
- 24:41he used to preach the good news of
- 24:42Christ because all through the Bible you
- 24:44see Christ revealed Graham scrouge he
- 24:46said if you cut the Bible anywhere it
- 24:48bleeds it's the idea that Jesus is
- 24:50represented from Genesis to Revelation
- 24:53Paul yet there you have to bear in mind
- 24:55we have the advantage of the New
- 24:56Testament so we have the whole good news
- 24:58of Jesus and the message of the Cross
- 24:59that we could preach Paul was pre
- 25:02preaching the message of the Cross and
- 25:04the truth of Jesus with the Old
- 25:06Testament Scriptures and even so he was
- 25:09saying this is the Word of God to you
- 25:12this is not just stuff made up by men
- 25:15this is the Word of God which is God's
- 25:18revelation expressed through men who
- 25:22were vessels of his thoughts and
- 25:23intentions so I only wanted to pause
- 25:26here and point this out because even as
- 25:27we're reading the Bible and you come
- 25:28here and Wednesday nights and you come
- 25:30on Sundays and we're studying God's Word
- 25:31together it is just that it is God's
- 25:34Word it is the Word of God it is the
- 25:38uncompromised authoritative revelation
- 25:42of God expressed through the Pens of men
- 25:46but nevertheless that communicate his
- 25:49will and his intention and this is what
- 25:52the Bible teaches so I put up for you
- 25:53the reference to 2nd Timothy 3:16 second
- 25:56Peter 2 verse 21 2nd Peter 1 verse 21
- 26:00and these verses say the 2nd Timothy
- 26:023:16 all scripture all Scripture is
- 26:05god-breathed and is useful for teaching
- 26:08rebuking correcting and training in
- 26:11righteousness all Scripture is
- 26:14god-breathed it is the Greek word thea
- 26:16news dose that literally he imparted
- 26:20through human vessels his divine purpose
- 26:26divine will and divine expression that
- 26:30it would be captured for us and
- 26:31preserved for us as his breathed
- 26:36word second Peter 1:21 says for prophecy
- 26:39never had its origin in the will of man
- 26:41but men spoke from God as they were
- 26:43carried along by the Holy Spirit so we
- 26:47speak about how the Bible is the
- 26:48inspired Word of God that's what
- 26:50inspiration is inspiration means that
- 26:52God so directed the human writers of
- 26:55scripture that using their personalities
- 26:58and their literary styles his complete
- 27:01revelation for mankind was revealed and
- 27:06Paul commends the church here says you
- 27:08receive this and you accepted it as the
- 27:11Word of God not as the word of men but
- 27:12as the Word of God which is at work in
- 27:16you who believe so verse 17 but brothers
- 27:21when we were torn away from you for a
- 27:25short time torn away that it's a Greek
- 27:27word app or app app or fan needs oh it
- 27:32has that's the root word orphan because
- 27:35it means to be without children so he
- 27:37says that's how much we were torn away
- 27:39we were you were like orphaned from us
- 27:41we were torn away from you for a short
- 27:43time in person not in thought again that
- 27:46reference of how he had to be hustled
- 27:48out of town out of our intense longing
- 27:51we made every effort to see you for we
- 27:53wanted to come to you certainly I Paul
- 27:55did again and again but Satan stopped us
- 27:58notice that Satan stopped us and that's
- 28:01really a reference to the opposition
- 28:03that he was facing when people came
- 28:04against him he saw that as a tool that
- 28:08Satan was using to oppose him Satan
- 28:10stopped us for what is verse 19 for what
- 28:13is our hope our joy or the crown in
- 28:16which we will glory future tents in the
- 28:19presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes
- 28:21is it not you indeed you are our glory
- 28:25and joy now please note with me there in
- 28:29verse 19 for what is our hope our joy or
- 28:31the crown in which we will glory
- 28:35underline that we will glory in the
- 28:37presence of our Lord Jesus when it comes
- 28:40is it not you so he says we're gonna
- 28:43glory in God's presence and what is our
- 28:46glory and he says it's you
- 28:49most Bible commentaries when you read
- 28:52this passage will explain it this way
- 28:53that what Paul is talking about is when
- 28:58they get in the presence of the Lord one
- 28:59day Paul saying like you know I wanted
- 29:02to come see you again I had to be
- 29:03hustled out of town my life was in
- 29:05jeopardy I hope to see you again but if
- 29:07I don't ever see you again on earth I'll
- 29:12see you again in heaven and we will
- 29:14glory together in the presence of the
- 29:16Lord and this is a reference to the fact
- 29:19that once again when you know Christ as
- 29:23your Savior and you die and you go to
- 29:25heaven and your loved ones know Christ
- 29:27as their Savior and they die and go to
- 29:29heaven there will be this glorious
- 29:31reunion in the presence of the Lord
- 29:34otherwise Paul wouldn't write this Paul
- 29:36Paul wouldn't say you know we get to
- 29:38heaven I hope I know you
- 29:40he says when we get in the presence of
- 29:42the Lord he says the the real glory of
- 29:45my ministry the real wonder and joy of
- 29:47my ministry we'll be seeing you there
- 29:50and so he had anticipates seeing them
- 29:53there and how they will recognize each
- 29:55other in the presence of the Lord
- 29:58chapter 3 so when we could stand it no
- 30:01longer we thought it best to be left by
- 30:04ourselves in Athens
- 30:06we sent Timothy who was our brother and
- 30:09God's fellow worker in spreading the
- 30:11gospel of Christ to strengthen and
- 30:13encourage you in your faith so that no
- 30:16one would be unsettled by these trials
- 30:20circle the word unsettled but we'll come
- 30:22back to it by these trials
- 30:24he's as you know quite well that we were
- 30:26destined for them in fact when we were
- 30:29with you we kept telling you that we
- 30:31would be persecuted and it turned out
- 30:34that way
- 30:36as you well know for this reason when I
- 30:38could stand it no longer I sent to find
- 30:41out about your faith I was afraid that
- 30:43in some way the tempter whose that Satan
- 30:48might have tempted you and our efforts
- 30:51might have been useless okay here's what
- 30:53he's talking about he he's talking about
- 30:56how okay he had to leave in the mill the
- 30:58night he went to Berea after Berea went
- 30:59to Athens he says but I sent Timothy
- 31:01back to you
- 31:02because he said I wanted to get a good
- 31:03report I wanted to find out how you were
- 31:05doing and here's what he was concerned
- 31:06about he was concerned that the trials
- 31:09that they were experiencing because
- 31:11again they were being persecuted to some
- 31:13degree there was opposition against them
- 31:15he wanted to make sure they're still
- 31:16doing strong the trials against them and
- 31:19the trials that he himself has faced he
- 31:21did not want his own trials or their own
- 31:24for that matter to shipwreck their faith
- 31:27he's like I hope I hope that you're
- 31:30still staying true to the Lord and that
- 31:32you're not looking at these trials and
- 31:33these difficulties in a way that would
- 31:36discourage you from continuing to follow
- 31:38Christ and he talks about here he says
- 31:41we sent him at the our brother our
- 31:43fellow worker and spreading the gospel
- 31:44to strengthen and encourage you in your
- 31:46faith so that no one would be unsettled
- 31:49King James says no one would be moved by
- 31:52these trials and it's the Greek word
- 31:54sigh Ino sa Ino it's the only time in
- 31:57all of the New Testament this particular
- 31:59word is used say no sa i n o and it's a
- 32:02word that means to wag like a dog's tail
- 32:05as a very interesting usage of the word
- 32:09that only time this word is used in all
- 32:10the New Testament this is what Paul
- 32:12saying texture like how backs its tail
- 32:16he's like I don't I don't want your
- 32:18faith to be like this
- 32:19I don't want your faith to be unsettled
- 32:22I don't want your faith to be wagging I
- 32:23don't want your faith to be you know
- 32:25here here it's strong now its weak now
- 32:28it's strong now its weak I don't want
- 32:30you to be unsettled like this like that
- 32:32like a dog's tail wagging so I want you
- 32:36to be strong in the Lord and I don't
- 32:37want the trials that I've been going
- 32:39through to discourage you in your faith
- 32:41and I don't want your trials and you're
- 32:42going through to discourage you in your
- 32:44faith you know Jesus says that trials
- 32:48must come jesus said in this world you
- 32:52will have tribulation but take heart I
- 32:55have overcome the world
- 32:56trials and difficulties will be a part
- 32:59of life don't give up on God he'll never
- 33:06give up on you
- 33:09in first Peter chapter 4 Peter would say
- 33:13it this way dear friends do not be
- 33:17surprised to the painful trial you are
- 33:19suffering as though something strange
- 33:21were happening to you but rejoice that
- 33:24you participate in the sufferings of
- 33:27Christ so that you may be overjoyed when
- 33:30his glory is revealed one day one day he
- 33:35says if you were insulted because of the
- 33:36name of Christ you are blessed for the
- 33:39spirit of glory and of God rests on you
- 33:41if you suffer it should not be as a
- 33:44murderer or a thief or any other kind of
- 33:45criminal or even as a meddler however if
- 33:47you suffer as a Christian do not be
- 33:49ashamed to praise God that you bared
- 33:51that name in other words if you're
- 33:53suffering for criminal reasons well then
- 33:56you need to suffer he says but I want
- 33:59you to know as a Christian when you
- 34:01experience suffering continue to hold on
- 34:04to Jesus because what a privilege that
- 34:07we bear his name says don't let the
- 34:12sufferings of this world and don't let
- 34:14the trials that we go through shipwreck
- 34:17your faith he says I was afraid that in
- 34:20some way Satan
- 34:21the tempter might have come and deceived
- 34:24you and tempted you and our efforts
- 34:26might have been useless he says in verse
- 34:296 but Timothy has just now come to us
- 34:31from you and has brought good news about
- 34:33your faith and love he has told us that
- 34:36you always have pleasant memories of us
- 34:38and that you longed to see us just as we
- 34:40law also longed to see you therefore
- 34:43brothers in all our distress and
- 34:44persecution we were encouraged about you
- 34:47because of your faith verse 8 he says
- 34:50for now we really live since you are
- 34:52standing firm in the Lord how can we
- 34:55thank God enough for you in return for
- 34:57all the joy we have in the presence of
- 34:59our God because of you night and day we
- 35:01pray most earnestly that we may see you
- 35:04again and supply what is lacking in your
- 35:06faith so Paul's very encourages like
- 35:07Timothy brings back good news sounds a
- 35:10little worried that all the trials I've
- 35:11been going through the trials you've
- 35:12been going through would shipwreck your
- 35:14faith the tempter Satan would come along
- 35:15and discourage you and you wouldn't be
- 35:17following Jesus but Timothy's comeback
- 35:19has told us about your love and your
- 35:21faith and I'm so encouraged
- 35:22I'm so grateful to God for you he's I've
- 35:25been praying earnestly for you again and
- 35:27again and I hope I get to see you again
- 35:29and he says here in verse 11 down to the
- 35:32end of the chapter this is a little
- 35:33prayer here in verse 11 he says now may
- 35:35our God and Father himself and our Lord
- 35:38Jesus clear the way for us to come to
- 35:40you may the Lord make your love that's
- 35:43that is agape in the passage make make
- 35:45your love increase and overflow for each
- 35:49other and for everyone else just as ours
- 35:51does for you and may you strengthen your
- 35:53heart so that you will be blameless and
- 35:55holy in the presence of our God and
- 35:58Father when our Lord Jesus comes with
- 36:01all his Holy Ones Holy Ones as Hagios in
- 36:04the Greek it's not talking about angels
- 36:05he's talking about the Saints when the
- 36:07Saints returned with Jesus those who
- 36:09have gone on to be with the Lord those
- 36:10who have already died and gone to heaven
- 36:12to Jesus when he comes again the Saints
- 36:14come back with him to rule and reign for
- 36:16a thousand years so he's very encouraged
- 36:18about this but I just wanted to focus
- 36:20here in the last just a couple of
- 36:22minutes we have on the prayer he prays
- 36:24verses 12 and 13 well the first part of
- 36:28prayer in verse 11 where he talks about
- 36:29I pray that I'll be able to come see you
- 36:31again but then he prays for the church
- 36:33and I thought that these would be too
- 36:34good things for us to pray for ourselves
- 36:36as well because he asks and he and he
- 36:39says may the Lord
- 36:40number one increase may the Lord
- 36:43increase our love for one another that's
- 36:45in verse 12 and he says and then may the
- 36:48Lord strengthen our hearts to remain
- 36:50holy until Jesus comes and that prayer
- 36:53was good enough for the church at
- 36:55Thessalonica almost 2000 years ago and
- 36:59it's a good prayer for us too we always
- 37:02have room to increase our love for one
- 37:04another and may God strengthen our
- 37:07hearts that we would live lives of
- 37:09holiness until Jesus comes amen let's
- 37:15pray this Lord we thank you for your
- 37:18word and we thank you for Paul's prayer
- 37:20here for the church at Thessalonica and
- 37:22we pray this for ourselves this is a
- 37:25good thing Lord for us to ask that you
- 37:28would do in our hearts as well increase
- 37:31our love Lord for one another
- 37:33forgive us when we are unforgiving or
- 37:38ungrateful when we are malicious or when
- 37:42we gossip or slander one another
- 37:47increase our love Lord for each other
- 37:50you're a gap a love that we would
- 37:52genuinely love one another as you have
- 37:56loved us despite our differences thank
- 38:01you Lord that our differences add to the
- 38:03richness of the diversity of the body of
- 38:06Christ increase our love Lord for one
- 38:10another and we also pray that you would
- 38:14strengthen our hearts that we would be
- 38:18blameless and holy until Jesus comes
- 38:24that you would find us ready and
- 38:28watching that we would deal with sin in
- 38:32our lives we would be regularly
- 38:35confessing before you so that our hearts
- 38:39might be purified because you're so
- 38:42gracious and loving to forgive us of our
- 38:45sins and to cleanse us from all
- 38:46unrighteousness thank you that you're
- 38:49our Father we can turn to you and run to
- 38:51you and ask you to forgive us of our
- 38:53sins that we would be blameless and holy
- 38:56before you on that day that you L will
- 39:00return Lord find us faithful thank you
- 39:06Jesus for loving us we give you praise
- 39:10and thanks and glory and honor in Jesus
- 39:13name we pray and all God's people said
- 39:16amen
