1:51like a whatever I've had an opportunity
1:53to meet a lot of people in my life I
1:55really have way more than I should uh
1:58the guy that we have an interview with
2:01is
2:02special not that all our guests aren't
2:04special and you're special too cupcake
2:07over there I see that wow he's on a roll
2:08already let me tell let me tell you
2:11Valentino Dixon is a kid that grew up in
2:16downtown
2:18Buffalo got wrongly accused of murdering
2:22someone and spent 27 years in prison and
2:26got out of prison through the help of
2:29golf and through the golf golfing
2:30communities we're going to talk a little
2:31bit about that but he's our guest today
2:33and I can't wait great interview he's a
2:36lot of fun you've done some other work
2:38with him as far as uh the art show in
2:40town and some things like that too so
2:42you've kind of been around him getting
2:43to know him a little bit yeah really
2:45really did so we'll talk a little bit
2:46about that so all right so let's go
2:49to the match three all right Phil

3:01what' you think what did you think okay
3:07I first of
3:09all I'm just going to say it's like the
3:11the elephant in the room I miss
3:14tiger I missed the the the presence of
3:17having tiger involved in that thing John
3:19takes it all to a different level
3:20however you can't make the tiger
3:22comparison you'll be disappointed for
3:24many many years to come don't you think
3:26I I am but you ask me what I thought
3:28that's what I thought uh I thought Phil
3:29uh Phil and Charles just kicked their
3:31ass just kick their ass Steph who's a
3:33really good player you know for amateur
3:37standings did not have a good day and
3:39pton is a competitor so he just he he's
3:41got Payton's got two shots he's got he
3:44plays like our father's play from the
3:46Jim Thorp school he's got a duck hook
3:48and a double duck hook but he knows how
3:50to get his ball around the course and it
3:51just didn't happen they were also
3:52playing just outside of Tucson at a
3:54place called Stone Canyon that oh by the
3:57way Phil Mickelson purchased and
4:00um um is that an unfair Advantage not
4:03for Phil not according to Phil Charles
4:07was was written down Pearl as a 25
4:10handicap all right and he played some
4:13te's he was so far up it he didn't look
4:16fat he was so far up you couldn't see
4:18him and he was hitting sixes and seven
4:20irons off of te's and Phil is it
4:23possible to over coach Phil was working
4:27it he was telling Charles we're going to
4:29clear our mind mind Jay has has anybody
4:32been more over coached in the history of
4:33the golf game than than uh Charles
4:35Barkley I don't think so I don't think
4:37so but Charles delivered he either
4:42forgot or left the hitch at home even
4:45all three of the hitches there was no
4:46hitches he um uh he could fall apart at
4:50any given time which is fine but you
4:53know Phil's hitting driver off every
4:54hole you know trying to drive greens and
4:56everything it was it it was um it was
4:58fun but let me give some of the numbers
5:00that came out of
5:02here so the the whole idea this was
5:05called The Match 3 uh champions for
5:08change so they were specifically raising
5:10money
5:12for um historically all black colleges
5:16and universities to get some sort of
5:19push in their golf programs and for
5:21their golf in that in those those
5:24universities and those communities which
5:26I thought was fantastic five million
5:30$455,000 was raised wow that's amazing
5:33what those guys can uh 3.7 million meals
5:36were donated because of this um G so
5:39pearl one of the things so it's it's um
5:43you know we're not political and I don't
5:44want to be political but there's one
5:46there's a few things that we are talking
5:49and we are you know we're in over our
5:51100 show because we love this game it
5:53has been phenomenal to us it hasn't been
5:56perfect though it hasn't been perfect no
5:58one said it is we we never pretended it
6:00has been but there were you know as you
6:03look back at some of the history of the
6:04game and things like that it was uh
6:08shoot I you grew up a little differently
6:10than I did but to me it seemed kind of
6:13exclus exclusive uh or exclusionary
6:17because we didn't have enough money to
6:18join a club so from that standpoint I
6:21felt like I was kind of on the outside
6:23looking in but it wasn't the case
6:26because I was able to the game brought
6:28me in you know well yeah you you did I
6:30mean I my first time being on a golf
6:32course was cading I mean I CAD from my
6:34father then I went to the public course
6:36and caded and if I went to the public
6:37course in Caddy then I could make a
6:39couple bucks and I could play the golf
6:40course I I get the exclusionary from the
6:43membership thing and that kind of stuff
6:45but I mean you you're always pointing
6:46out and I think I know when we were
6:48growing up if you want to go play golf
6:49there's places to go play golf but also
6:52part of it was it wasn't that big of a
6:54deal it was not you know I want to play
6:56ball with the neighborhood kids you know
6:58football football season baseball
7:00basketball across the across the board
7:03you know golf was like you know if we
7:04take one more dad's clubs and go into
7:06the backyard and whack the some balls
7:08into into the woods that's what we knew
7:09about golf at the time and didn't really
7:11care right but the point is this sort of
7:15thing is a phenomenal step forward from
7:19wherever the hell you want to say we are
7:21I happen to think I want to think you
7:24know Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farm on the
7:26sunny side of the fence over there I
7:28want to thinkk yes Rebecca
7:30we're we're a little bit we're you know
7:32maybe a little bit further than some
7:34others but the point is we've got people
7:37interested we've got people um raising
7:41money and and creating some awareness
7:43it's only going to get better yeah well
7:44you got the first te program which
7:46you've obviously been involved in you've
7:48got things like this I I just contend
7:51and I think I of course I want the
7:52capability to be there for everybody I
7:55just uh I'm just not sure how many
7:57people's radar it's on plus Jay you know
7:59you can go out and play play catch and
8:01play baseball and after a couple minutes
8:03normally you can kind of catch it and
8:05throw it basketball if you have some
8:07level of strength as a little kid if you
8:09can throw it high enough you're got to
8:10make one one of them once in a while you
8:12go out there and golf you got to go out
8:13about 25 times before you can like do
8:15anything that you feel like you can do
8:17anything right nothing nothing good is
8:19going to really really happen to when
8:22when you're a younger person do you
8:24really want to go do something that I
8:26guess that'd be like which I never got
8:27past the second lesson playing a guitar
8:29or playing the piano or something you
8:31know you didn't want to do that because
8:33like I I don't get it after the first
8:34lesson so why am I doing this so I think
8:37that's one of the other hard parts of
8:38the game and then then you get behind
8:40and then you know how many people have
8:41you run into a business they want to go
8:43play now that they're in business but
8:45they can't play and the other guys are
8:46shooting even if they're shooting below
8:4890 anything or right around 90 the
8:51person that's going to go out there and
8:51shoot 140 you know like meat you know
8:55they don't really want to go out there
8:56NE well meat does want to go out there
8:57though wow I thought he was sleeping I
8:59thought he was
9:01sleeping well we're going to hear from
9:03uh me as soon as he gets that mic turned
9:04on but see he was sleeping 140 is that
9:08what you said no I said 140 I was giving
9:12you a compliment but you you only called
9:14part of it cuz you weren't paying
9:15attention well the other thing that's
9:17cool is um Jay Monahan our commissioner
9:20has committed a hundred million over the
9:22next 10 years for racial and social uh
9:27justice causes so
9:30we're rallying we're rallying we're
9:32going to get better let's put it that
9:33way we're going to get better and um the
9:36the other thing Pearl we said this way
9:37too many times I'm going to say it way
9:39too many times again look what the game
9:41does yeah look what the I mean
9:44charitable engine like nobody's business
9:47there's this is the Friday after
9:49Thanksgiving and these guys are playing
9:51in front of no people and Capital One
9:53and some of these other companies that
9:55stepped up to the plate right on they're
9:57making it happen it's a good thing right
9:59on well that's going to do it for the on
10:01the Range segment but don't go anywhere

12:00news my friend Henry Miller from the law
12:02firm Grant Miller Smith had represented
12:04me in yet another round of legal
12:06wrangling for my divorce of almost 15
12:09years ago I felt as if I was being
12:11unfairly burdened by the maintenance I
12:13was paying not only did they think so

13:49really is it going to

14:03there there's just as you know when the
14:05media world there's only a couple names
14:08have move the needle you know tiger and
14:10Phil are just about it um that's why
14:11it's almost an unfair question yeah but
14:14man those guys can still really there's
14:17so many guys out there that can really
14:18play I remember going through tour
14:19school cing for you through tour school
14:22just kind of wondering what we're going
14:23to see it was amazing how deep I can
14:25remember the one time I wish I would
14:27have written the number down I think it
14:28one tour school that you're going
14:30through maybe it was down in uh Houston
14:32I think I counted like 18 previous tour
14:35winners winners that's wiers just going
14:37through tour school not playing in in an
14:39event that wasn't the year that my ball
14:41hit the uh the bulkhead was it on that
14:43one par five the wood I'm I'm pretty
14:46sure it was yeah I thought it was too
14:49not that I'm remembering much of it not
14:51that you didn't let that go no I didn't
14:53good yardage anyway um I got to thank my
14:56friends at Whitmore Country Club for

16:48Dixon this is a guy who grew up in
16:53Buffalo
16:55um got caught up in a really bad
16:59situation and got convicted of a murder
17:03he didn't commit spent 27 years in
17:05prison let's go listen to what Valentino
17:07Dixon has to
17:10say is it his time
17:14yes there it is can you believe

17:23te two years ago we met um we were doing
17:28a little G with uh uh Mike D and Jerry

17:34brought you in because your story caught
17:37my eye and I I haven't been able to put
17:40it down since so Valentino you were in
17:42pris wrongly in prison for 27 years man
17:45can you take us back to 1991 when you
17:49when this whole thing kind of went down
17:52yeah well I was hanging out with some
17:54friends at a popular hangout it was
17:57about 90 people out there
17:59and a shooting took place I took off ran
18:02in my cars drove away and shortly
18:06thereafter I was pulled over and taken
18:09into custody okay and told that I had
18:13shot and killed the man which I thought
18:16was
18:18insane but I always felt like okay this
18:21thing is going to clear your up okay
18:24eight people came forward and actually
18:26the person responsible for the crime
18:27stepped up and told detectives what
18:30happened all of those people were
18:31disregarded I I believe because of
18:34embarrassment public embarrassment I had
18:36been you know plastered all over the
18:38news and I don't believe that detectives
18:41or whoever was in charge wanted to just
18:43make it right and say hey we made a
18:45mistake here you know I was poor you
18:48know and I hate to use a race carard I
18:51hate to use race card you know but I was
18:53poor I was from the inner city and I
18:55couldn't afford an attorney I find
18:57myself going to trial 10 months later
18:59uh my appointed attorney did not call
19:02any of those Witnesses who were
19:03available uh he did not introduce the
19:06confession of the shooter which was
19:08available to him and he didn't even give
19:11an opening statement and I complained
19:13about the Jud to the judge about his
19:15conduct and the judge told me to sit
19:17down that I had a find attorneys and all
19:19this is on the record so the jury came
19:22back and found me guilty they gave me 39
19:24years I found myself in Attica prison
19:27which is you know one of the worst
19:28prisons
19:29America and you know for the first seven
19:32years I didn't draw at all you know and
19:35so my uncle sent me some art supplies
19:38and he says if you can reclaim your
19:40talent you can reclaim your life and so
19:43I just started drawing and he said hey
19:45man you may have to draw yourself out of
19:47prison the evidence is there but
19:48authorities is not acknowledging it so
19:51you may have to draw yourself out of
19:52prison I didn't know what he was talking
19:53about I started drawing every day my my
19:56spirit started getting stronger then the
19:58whole time God was with me I didn't
20:00understand it or or know God uh but he
20:02was with me and I was always sort of
20:06educated so I would help guys learn
20:08their GB you know I went to college in
20:10prison you know I was you know just
20:12basically a counselor in there for other
20:14people and you know I went to perform in
20:17our high school for artwork so I already
20:19had the skill but I hadn't used it in
20:22never nearly eight or nine years and so
20:26I started drawing every day every day
20:28every day and it was invigorating my
20:30spirit making me feel better and in
20:34comes one in comes the Wen one day says
20:37Hey Valentino could you draw my favorite
20:38golf hole you know because I had by then
20:41I had become known as the Artis and ATA
20:43I had 20 years in prison and I said sure
20:47even though I never golf before I'm a
20:48black kid from the inner city what do I
20:50know about golf you kidding me like how
20:52is this you know we we don't we're not
20:54introduced to anything like this
20:56basketball football that's it so I drew
20:59it the picture for him the 12 pole of
21:01Augusta he loved it he was elated and my
21:05neighbor another guy that used to golf
21:08white guy he said hey Valentina you need
21:10draw some more golf hes I said Adam you
21:13must be kidding me I'm not drawing any
21:14more golf FES get out of here and he
21:16toss some old golf Di death magazines on
21:19my bed so all right eventually I started
21:21going through them because I did enjoy
21:23drawing the qu F I mean that bridge is
21:25Iconic the flower scene it was different
21:28it wasn't ordering a golf golf hole and
21:31so I start going through the magazine so
21:33I start pulling out the different cuz he
21:35gave a bunch of old issues he said you
21:36don't want them toss them out so I start
21:38pulling out all the nice golf courses
21:41that I thought was nice you know because
21:43some of them you you know they shabby
21:45but so yeah I know all about those
21:48shabby ones bro I grew up on on immun
21:50for sure Dusty yeah Dusty a lot of dirt
21:53little bit of grass whatever so um I I
21:57Remember Loving the Beach and I did a
22:00bunch of pebble beaches you know just
22:02the water the the fence on the end of it
22:06and the sunlight hitting it so I just
22:08did it from different perspectives so
22:10after about six months I had about 40
22:12golf drawings because whenever I do
22:14something Jay I just put my whole heart
22:15and soul into it so I was just golf
22:17crazy then I was just just going in just
22:20like all day every day up to 10 hours
22:22drawing golf courses so I started
22:25reading the Articles inside the magazine
22:28all right I don't know nothing about
22:29this sport but let me read about this
22:31world Valentino let me stop you just for
22:33a minute seriously you're you grew up in
22:35the inner city in Buffalo New York
22:38there's not a golf course around I mean
22:42Golf and you and the how how I just it's
22:46just amazing but let me just back up
22:48just a little bit bud you had to have
22:50some really dark days in prison how how
22:54did you get
22:55through let me say this right I did have
22:58some dark days I had some tough days I
23:00cried a lot I buried my face in the
23:03pillow but let me just say this I always
23:05knew that I was blessed and I always
23:07knew that God had a plan for me okay and
23:11when you're tested in life you don't get
23:13you don't get to decide what test God is
23:15going to throw at you you know you got
23:17to roll with it you know and we're all
23:20going to be tested it could be death it
23:22could be a death in the family it could
23:24be a divorce it could be a car accident
23:27I don't know what it is every is going
23:28to have a test you know my test was 27
23:31years of ROM imprisonment you know so I
23:34just wanted to you know eventually As I
23:37understood this I want to be able to
23:39show people that you can overcome
23:42anything you know and oh my gosh God
23:44willing that's you know that's what I
23:46did Jay yeah you have yeah you have okay
23:50so I'm sitting here in my office looking
23:52at that beautiful painting of the 12th
23:55I've got it sitting right here wait wait
23:56J wait wait Jay hold on now it's a
23:58drawing oh it's a drawing yeah that's
24:01right color pencil drawing color pencil
24:03you're right I blew that myself that
24:06because because I have to there's so
24:08many layers for it to look like a
24:10painting so I have to put all these
24:11different Greens on there and take that
24:13drawing look out of it to give it a
24:15paint look and that's what you know
24:17that's what separates my drawings from
24:19other people yeah oh my gosh how long
24:22would it take did it take you to
24:25probably draw this
24:27gorgeous um
24:29um dep depending on what size because I
24:32us to work up to 10 hours a day so and
24:34every day 365 year I never took days off
24:38and so a drawing could take me three or
24:41four days if it's a smaller one if it's
24:44a bigger one it might take me two weeks
24:45if it's a huge one it may take me three
24:47months yeah okay this was probably the
24:50medium size it looks like an 18 by 24 or
24:52something it's gorgeous though ah okay
24:56it is AB absolutely spectacular so so go
24:59back so you said you drew you had 40
25:01paintings I'm sorry to interrupt I mean
25:0240 drawingss I'm sorry to interrupt
25:05you right that's all right so I had 40
25:09drawings and now I'm starting to read
25:13the articles okay so I come across a
25:17column by Max atler golf saved my life H
25:21golf saved my life what are they talking
25:23about
25:25so one of the Articles a guy was an
25:27Iraqi War he lost his arm during the
25:30Iraqi War but the only time he felt
25:32better is when he golfed you know so it
25:35gave these different scenarios on how
25:37golf was actually keeping people Spirit
25:40Alive and giving them a reason to want
25:43to live you know so I said you know what
25:45I correlated that with what I was doing
25:47I said I'm in here drawing golf courses
25:50I never golfed this is peaceful is
25:54Serene wow golf is saving my life
25:58so I ended up writing a four-page letter
26:02to the golf dig magazine Max and I sent
26:04him one of the drawings they was only
26:06small at the time they were seven by9
26:08okay and I actually did about 150 of
26:10those right I think I have about 40 left
26:15wow yeah
26:18so I wrote him and Max immediately wrote
26:22back and he says I'm interested in
26:24covering this story of course he didn't
26:26believe I was innocent he just thought
26:27this is nice story this guy is black
26:30here from inner city he's drawing golf
26:32courses and he says he's innocent okay
26:34whatever so but I Jay the whole time I
26:37could prove my innocence I had all the
26:39statements I had the police reports I
26:41had everything I needed to you know I
26:43needed to clear me I had had a
26:44confession from the guy that did the
26:46crime you know and it was it was a
26:48no-brainer you can't get around it it
26:51just had nobody looking at it nobody car
26:54to look at it and and really you know
26:56look into my case you know I got to
26:59concur with you because since I've known
27:01you when I met you two years ago I've
27:03dug up all this stuff it's there's video
27:07of all those guys saying you know I did
27:12you know he didn't do it and and I'm the
27:14one that did it yeah it doesn't matter
27:16Jay when our system makes a mistake it's
27:19hard for them to to admit to it I mean
27:21people are human you know and people are
27:24human and sometimes they want to covery
27:26for each other this is what happen
27:28unfortunately so you got good judges you
27:30have bad judges you have good
27:32prosecutors bad prosecutors I'm not
27:33about to say all of them are bad you
27:35have some very fair ones out there I
27:37just happen to get you know some people
27:39that were involved in this case that was
27:41not fair and I'm GNA leave it like that
27:43because I'm not a Basher I'm you know I
27:46don't condemn people I don't hate people
27:48a lot of people say how are you laughing
27:50how do you smiling how do you not hate
27:51these people you know my mom says you
27:54know I'm not getting over this no time
27:56soon and I you know maybe can you know
27:59but you know at the end of the day man I
28:02feel very blessed you know and when I
28:05look out in the world and I see the
28:06suffering that people are going through
28:08you know I see a 10-year-old kid you
28:10know sitting in the hospital going
28:12through cancer treatment and you know
28:14chemotherapy and it's not going to make
28:17it you know I look at that and I say you
28:19know what I got to count my blessings
28:21you know and it wasn't easy but this is
28:24a part of
28:25life man I'm more pissed off about this
28:28and you are gosh I'm with I'm with your
28:31mom I couldn't get over this anytime
28:34soon I just think that I just think that
28:37God took me through that so that I can
28:40you know maybe you know shine on
28:42somebody else's light bring some
28:44happiness to them whereas they going
28:46through something they say wow Valentino
28:47he got through that I'm GNA get through
28:49this what I'm going through you know and
28:51I think that's my purpose man when I was
28:53in in there I used to counsel guys they
28:55had issues I had friends that committed
28:57suicide couldn't save you know and I was
29:00like the black doctor feeling
29:02there
29:04wow oh my gosh that's I I just can't
29:08imagine I can't imagine that experience
29:10in Attica I've heard horror stories
29:12about a Valentino well right now I'm
29:14writing my book The Soul of an unfreed
29:16man and it takes you on my journey from
29:19from beginning to end on how I survive
29:22Atta you know I share a lot of horrific
29:25stories in there things that actually
29:26happen nothing is uh fictional and um
29:32that's you know and it's coming out on
29:34on Amazon December 1st the book is oh
29:36well I'm getting one I'm going to get
29:39one I can't wait to read it that's
29:40fantastic so so so let's talk about
29:43these georgetown's uh law students that
29:46that helped you Ellie Julian
29:49naoya yeah yeah so this is how that came
29:52about so when the golf diges issue came
29:56out I asked Max I said hey Max I need 50
29:59magazines they said 50 I said yeah Max I
30:02got to send these magazines out to all
30:03the top law firms in the country and ask
30:05them for support I had been taking
30:08making a journal of a lot of the top
30:10lawyers so I already knew who they were
30:11and who who I wanted to focus on so I
30:15takes the magazine sends it out and one
30:19of the lawyers out of New York City I'm
30:20not going to say his name because he he
30:22took the case but he sat on the case and
30:23didn't help however he had a per legal
30:26working there Mar P Cliff who ended up
30:30leaving and and going off to law school
30:33and becoming an Adit professor at Georg
30:36toown he's the one that introduced my
30:38case to the
30:40students man the term it takes a village
30:43is never been more appropriate here has
30:45it yeah man never never it takes a
30:48village it took a village to convict me
30:50it take a village to
30:52unconvicted right so tell me about your
30:55relationship with these women
30:58well I was just texting uh Julie
31:01yesterday and uh she's out of France
31:05okay I'm I can't wait till uh pandemic
31:08is over so I can fly over there and um
31:12and visit her and possibly have some
31:14speaking uh engagements and stuff like
31:16that uh now
31:18Ellie she's in England and I already
31:21been to England and met up with her and
31:23we hung out and stuff like that because
31:25I was I was did a show with um piers
31:27Morgan oh sure you know yeah I did two
31:30shows with Piers Morgan I they actually
31:32flew me over there before the pandemic
31:35so me and Ellie is like really close and
31:38then Nala he's he's uh from
31:42Japan and um he wasn't as involved as
31:47the other two even though he was there a
31:49lot he had other other uh obligations so
31:53I haven't seen him uh since I've been
31:55out well that's going to wrap up the
31:58front nine hey I need to give a shout

37:17wow in your life have you seen anything
37:20like
37:22that Valentino Dixon is brought to you

37:29Valentino did you have some appeals
37:31prior to that that got turned down all
37:35my appeals got how how with all of that
37:38evidence what happen to this the the pel
37:42courts you know when you you peel your
37:44case it goes to the pel court you know
37:46within two weeks they rubber stamped it
37:50they said I didn't have a
37:51claim and that was that you know I don't
37:54believe they looked at the motion you
37:56know was a 6 page motion and highlighted
37:59the eight 80 W eight witnesses that
38:01cleared me and had their statements in
38:02there you know the physical evidence
38:05that uh cleared me that didn't connect
38:07me to the crime and the confession they
38:10overlooked it all why because who wants
38:13to overturn a murder conviction you know
38:16and that's that's the best way I can put
38:17it it's a sad reality about our judicial
38:20system but this is what happens okay so
38:22the case goes to the federal court it
38:25gets all the way up to the federal court
38:26and they tell me that I'm time barred
38:29meaning that I filed it two months too
38:31late so they wasn't even going to
38:33entertain
38:34it oh man and
38:37then and then we paid 30 grand for a LW
38:40to try to take it to this to to the uh
38:43to the Supreme Court and the Supreme
38:45Court said we're not even going to look
38:47at it we can't do anything here or the
38:51court of appeals both courts you know so
38:55guess what what do I do I have to go go
38:57back to the drawing board I actually
39:00have to come up with new
39:02evidence believe it or not the eight
39:04Witnesses in the confession was not
39:05enough oh I gotta come up with new
39:07evidence so I gotta sit for some years
39:10until this evidence comes around and
39:13that's exactly what happened
39:15Jay oh let me just say this let me just
39:17say this Jay why do you think you read
39:19the newspapers man woman exonerated
39:22after 20 years 30 years 25 why does it
39:25take that long it takes that long
39:28because people are tooo busy Beering in
39:30and covering for each other yeah okay
39:32until until somebody comes along and
39:34pushes the envelope and says hey you
39:37know you got to do something here you
39:39know so at that point when it when it
39:43you know when the walls come uh caving
39:47in the system has to do something about
39:50it you know I started getting too much
39:51publicity with my case so then they had
39:55to do
39:56something well
39:58man so Valentino
40:00so this thing starts getting some
40:02positive momentum after all of these
40:05years and yes you get exonerated in 2018
40:1027 years behind bars I just can't
40:13imagine it what what did it feel like I
40:15I I mean I can't even
40:18imagine well let me just say this I'm a
40:22different I was a different type of
40:23prisoner so meaning that I stayed out
40:26here with you guys what kept me strong
40:29was that I was not never really there
40:31inside the prison I was on the outside
40:34thinking about all the things you guys
40:36were doing fantasizing looking at it in
40:38magazines reading about it in books you
40:41know checking it out on the TV in the
40:43yard and just like I'm out there living
40:47life even though I was in prison you
40:50know so when I walked out it wasn't no
40:52culture shock because I was already
40:54updated on everything I was not stuck in
40:56199 1 I picked the G's brains whenever
40:59we talked I picked the inmates brains
41:01that had just came from the outside I
41:03needed to know everything that was going
41:05on in the world because I'm not going to
41:06be behind what kind of phone do I want
41:08do I want a Galaxy or do I want an
41:09iPhone I knew these things before I
41:11walked out of there oh my gosh just that
41:14mental exercise had to be so helpful and
41:16your daughter Tina she was six months
41:18old when you went to prison man you lost
41:21all that time but I can remember
41:24you yeah Jay let me say you can remember
41:27what I was just remember you were you
41:28told me the story about how much fun it
41:30was when you got out and you were
41:32messing with the phone with her and she
41:33was teaching you stuff like Dad no this
41:36is the iPhone here's you know yeah
41:38because I didn't want the iPhone I
41:39wanted to get a Galaxy because I knew
41:41that it was easier to navigate yeah okay
41:44and she was like nope you're gonna be a
41:46part of the iPhone family I don't care
41:47what you say and she gave me and she
41:50gave me no choice I'm glad though yeah
41:52daughters are like that man I got four
41:54of them yeah I'm glad I became I'm glad
41:56I became part of the iPhone family you
41:59know and you know what you just gave me
42:02an idea I you know what we need to reach
42:05out to iPhone we need to share this
42:06story with them yeah let's do you know
42:09what I'm saying yeah yeah maybe they
42:11maybe they can maybe they can donate to
42:13my uh Foundation the art of freedom to
42:15help me fight these wrongful convictions
42:17because I get a lot of requests that
42:18come all the time and I can't help these
42:20people without a lawyer no no I'm sure
42:24yeah you know I got a bunch of guys that
42:26call me on phone from prison I write
42:28letters and stuff like that um so maybe
42:31yeah maybe iPhone might want to help
42:33with the prison reform thing if they
42:35they heard this story right here yeah
42:37absolutely so let's talk a little bit
42:39about your art I know you did had a sold
42:41out um art uh uh Art Gallery in in New
42:47York years ago didn't you would after
42:49you first got out yeah that was in SoHo
42:52it was at the Andrew edelin Art Gallery
42:54in uh
42:55Manhattan um
42:58and I haven't had these shows since okay
43:01but people do reach out to try to buy an
43:04original or something that I drew in
43:05prison so so originals are still
43:07available if anybody's interested I have
43:097 by9 16 by 20s 20 by 30s I have uh 40
43:14by 60s you know so I still got some left
43:18if anybody's interested yeah we need to

43:57to the Masters I met Tiger Woods I know
43:59we got to tell that story it's fantastic

44:16I says no tiger you're gonna win The
44:18Masters and he won the Masters there was
44:21last year I got it on my phone I got the
44:24whole conversation on my phone
44:27you also met the other greats Nicholas
44:30and Watson all those guys then the next
44:33day I meet Jack Nicholas we're
44:35conversating and he said you remind me
44:37of somebody I said who he say you remind
44:40me of Nelson Mandela he spent 27 years
44:42also and you guys have the same Spirit
44:45oh my God that was such that was such a
44:47you know such a great moment and honor
44:50just to hear that you know and then
44:53later on that day Tom Watson gives me
44:55golf lesson
44:57come on you can't make this stuff up man
45:00if someone had told you when you were 10
45:02years old you'd be ad Augusta you'd be
45:04hanging out with tiger Jack and Tom up J
45:07and then and then and then a few months
45:10later I went to the emies my story for
45:13the Golf Channel was nominated for Emmy
45:15Award man and I meet Michael
45:19Stam imagine that no well it's just the
45:22tip of the iceberg but the story you
45:24have is just absolutely fantastic this
45:27is Valentino Dixon my friend uh who's
45:29wrongly accused for 27 years of a murder
45:32he didn't commit and this story is

53:59Torri who Cates for web Simpson and um
54:03you know we kind of circle the wagons
54:04that way through our Network and um he
54:07came in brought some of his paintings
54:08and um uh I was on the board at Art
54:11Unleashed at the time my buddies Mike
54:12daer Jerry Peterson we we put this
54:15together and had a little fundraiser and
54:16raised a bunch of money for the uh the
54:20charity
54:23but I I still like scratch head I'm more
54:27pissed off about what happened to him
54:29than he is first of all I thought it was
54:31one of your better interviews of the
54:33first hundred that you've done and
54:35obviously the subject matter was uh very
54:38interesting I obviously have a different
54:40perspective I wasn't there you did the
54:41interviews I haven't met the the
54:43gentleman but I what's interesting to me
54:45is I think he kind of kept trying to say
54:47in different ways hey I had to get this
54:50mindset or I wasn't going to survive
54:52this thing let alone prosper and so I I
54:54don't want to say just survived he's far
54:56more than survived uh prospered with it
54:59so however you get that however you get
55:01to that point I hope we we have to find
55:05out but it be once you're there it seems
55:07like a pretty sweet place to be because
55:09he he seems pretty good with where he's
55:11at oh man well here's a couple stories
55:14so Augusta National you know all the
55:16networks and the golf networks were all
55:19behind the scenes pulling strings and
55:21trying to make this thing work for this
55:23guy and he get they they gets exonerated
55:25and released
55:26Augusta names him one of their
55:29designated artists for I didn't know
55:32that awesome this happened last year
55:352019 okay I now that I'm putting the
55:38whole thing together I was there you
55:40know at the tournament I wish I had have
55:42known because I would have loved to just
55:43said hi to him but anyway so he's
55:47mulling around inside the Champions
55:49locker room and he meets Jack Nicholas
55:52he meets Tom Watson they're giving him
55:53lessons I never mold around inside the
55:55Champions Locker
55:56me neither okay I was going to say I
55:58think there's an exclusive party that
56:00gets in there well in Pearl he walks
56:01into the he walks into the clubhouse
56:03what's the first thing he does he pulls
56:05out his cell he's taking vids he's like
56:07I'm never what am I going to be and
56:09they're like uh Mr Mr Dixon you can't do
56:13that he's like oh okay sorry no problem
56:15you know it was completely innocent um
56:18but he runs into Jack Nicholas and Jack
56:20Nicholas says something to the effect
56:22that I've only met one other person that
56:25gives me the same Vibe and feel as you
56:27do and that's Nelson Mandela yeah that's
56:29quite the compliment how about that yeah
56:31so but here's a here's a cool story so
56:33he meets tiger and you know Tiger's he's
56:36competing you know that week so it's
56:38still it's it's on okay and he
56:42says Tiger's like hey yeah man I know
56:44who you are you know tough story but
56:48glad you're out glad you're here you
56:50know and and Valentino pulls from behind
56:52his back a picture that he's drawn of
56:56the 12th and he said look this is for
56:58you and T's like oh no you don't have to
57:00do he said no this is for you you are
57:02going to win this tournament this year
57:06and this HS for whatever Valentino
57:09doesn't know which end of the golf club
57:11to hold right right this hole is going
57:13to be very important and Tiger's like
57:14hey thanks man and you know off he goes
57:16because you know Tiger's got
57:17responsibilities he's playing and
57:19everything really the 12th hole you had
57:22K get hit in the water you had it was
57:24important for everybody else
57:27in the water you had feno hit it in the
57:29water you had it was the English guy uh
57:33polter hit water y tiger hits that
57:36little trappy draw into the center where
57:39he said he wanted to hit it Y and Jack
57:41says he wants to hit it yeah so anyway
57:43anyway cool story um uh Valentino Dixon
57:47though what a if you don't know him look
57:49him up Valentino dixon.ca look at uh
57:51some of his artwork he um somehow
57:57uh I want to say a roommate might have
57:59been a roommate but a fellow inmate gave
58:01him an old Golf Digest and said can you
58:03draw some this I I kind of like Golf and
58:06he's like do you know anything about
58:07golf he's like dude I grew up in the
58:08city I know golf courses in downtown one
58:11of the uh the guards I believe uh just
58:13encouraging but that's absolutely
58:15awesome it's just it's just fun you know
58:17we're never going to find never going to
58:19know when we're going to find our
58:20passion find that interest find that
58:22thing with that clicks with us that's
58:24one hell of a story on how he found his
58:26is but uh it's out there for uh for all
58:28of us so I think that's pretty sweet
58:30when do you think you run up again
58:31around him again when do you think we
58:33text all the time he just texted me
58:35Happy Thanksgiving the other day and so
58:37he's out speaking and stuff is he he
58:38does some speaking things he's doing
58:40some stuff over in Europe he's uh he
58:42actually had a soldout gallery showing
58:45in New York City not uh long after he
58:47was released and so um I bought a couple
58:51of his uh of of his uh work and uh um
58:56it's I don't know he's just one of those
58:58people that got to follow this guy see
59:00where he goes yeah it's pretty cool you
59:01know what that is going to wrap up
