5. 0:40view and the Grandeur as a lot of
6. 0:43time if uh I read a statement which I
7. 0:47think will make it clear what the nature
8. 0:50of my relationship with Miss Lewinsky
9. 0:52was how it related to the testimony I
10. 0:55gave what I was trying to do in that
11. 0:57testimony and I think it will perhaps
12. 0:59make it possible for you
13. 1:01to ask even more relevant questions from
14. 1:05your point of view and with your
15. 1:07permission I'd like to read that
16. 1:08statement absolutely Please Mr President
17. 1:30when I was alone with Miss
18. 1:33Lewinsky on certain occasions in early
19. 1:371996 and once in early
20. 1:421997 I engaged in conduct that was
21. 1:46wrong these encounters did not consist
22. 1:49of sexual
23. 1:50intercourse they did not constitute
24. 1:52sexual relations As I understood that
25. 1:55term to be defined at my January 17th
26. 1:581998
27. 2:00that
28. 2:02position but they did involve in
29. 2:05appropriate intimate
30. 2:08contact these inappropriate encounters
31. 2:10ended at my insistence in early
32. 2:141997 I also had occasional telephone
33. 2:17conversations with Mr winsky that
34. 2:20included an appropriate sexual
35. 2:24banner I regret that what began as a
36. 2:28friendship came to include this conduct
37. 2:31and I take full responsibility for my
38. 2:35actions while I will provide the grand
39. 2:37jury whatever other information I
40. 2:40can because of privacy
41. 2:43considerations affecting my family
42. 2:46myself and
43. 2:48others and in an effort to preserve the
44. 2:50Dignity of the office I
45. 2:53hold this is all I will say about the
46. 2:56specifics of these particular
47. 2:58matters I will will try to answer to the
48. 3:01best of my
49. 3:03ability other questions including
50. 3:06questions about my relationship with
51. 3:07Miss
52. 3:09Linsky questions about my understanding
53. 3:12of the term sexual
54. 3:14relation As I understood it to be
55. 3:17defined at my January 17th 1998
56. 3:26deposition and I believe that is the
57. 3:29definition that most ordinary Americans
58. 3:31would give it if you said Jane and Harry
59. 3:34have a sexual
60. 3:36relationship and you're not talking
61. 3:38about people being drawn into a lawsuit
62. 3:40and being given definitions and then a
63. 3:42great effort to trick them in some way
64. 3:44but you're just talking about people in
65. 3:45ordinary
66. 3:46conversation I'll bet the grand jur is
67. 3:48if they were talking about two people
68. 3:49they know and said they have a sexual
69. 3:51relationship they meant they were
70. 3:53sleeping together they meant they were
71. 3:54having intercourse together so I'm not
72. 3:56at all sure that this affidavit is not
73. 3:57true and was not true in Miss Lewinsky's
74. 4:00mind at the time she swore it
75. 4:05out they proceeded to cross the country
76. 4:08and try to turn up whatever they could
77. 4:10not because they thought it would help
78. 4:11their case by the time they did this
79. 4:13discovery they knew what this deal was
80. 4:15in their case and they knew what was
81. 4:17going to happen and judge right
82. 4:18subsequently threw it out what they let
83. 4:20me finish Mr Bennett Mr I mean you
84. 4:23brought this
85. 4:24up excuse me Mr
86. 4:27bitman what they wanted to do and what
87. 4:29what they did do and what they had done
88. 4:32by the time I showed up here was to find
89. 4:35any negative information they could on
90. 4:37me whether it was true or not get it in
91. 4:39a deposition and then leak
92. 4:43it anyway she worked in the chief of
93. 4:46staff's office one night she brought me
94. 4:48some pizza we had some
95. 4:51remarks she had given me a particularly
96. 4:55nice book for
97. 4:57Christmas uh an and book on presidents
98. 5:01she knew that I collected old books and
99. 5:03it was a very nice thing and uh I just
100. 5:07thought I ought to get up a few things
101. 5:09and give them to her before she
102. 5:16left Miss Lewinsky said something to me
103. 5:22like what if they asked
104. 5:25me about the gifts you've given me
105. 5:28that's the memory I had that's why I'd
106. 5:31question whether it happened on the 28th
107. 5:33because she had a subpoena with the
108. 5:34request for
109. 5:37production and I told her that if they
110. 5:39asked her for gifts she'd have to give
111. 5:40them whatever she had that that that's
112. 5:42what the law
113. 5:45was after this relationship this
114. 5:49intimate inappropriate intimate
115. 5:51relationship between you and this linski
116. 5:53ended she continued to send you numerous
117. 5:58intimate notes C is that
118. 6:02right well they were some of them were
119. 6:06were somewhat in them and I'd say most
120. 6:09of them most of the Nots and cards were
121. 6:12uh were
122. 6:14affectionate all right but but she had
123. 6:18clearly accepted the fact that there
124. 6:20could be no contact between us that was
125. 6:23in any way
126. 6:25inappropriate well not only did you not
127. 6:27try to involve or you specifically tried
128. 6:29to exclude her and everyone else isn't
129. 6:31that
130. 6:34right well yes I I I've never
131. 6:41um I it's almost humorous sir I I I'd
132. 6:44have to be an exhibitionist not to have
133. 6:47tried to exclude everyone
134. 6:50else she says you told her I was never
135. 6:55alone with her right well I was never
136. 6:58alone with her you say that Mr President
137. 6:59Mr bitman just
138. 7:01a I was never alone with her right might
139. 7:04be a
140. 7:05question and what I might have meant by
141. 7:07that is in the Oval Office
142. 7:10complex you knew the answer we've been
143. 7:13going for more than an hour would you
144. 7:14mind if we take a break I need to go to
145. 7:16the
146. 7:19restroom can you tell the grand jury
147. 7:22what is tricky about the question did
148. 7:24anyone other than your
149. 7:26attorneys ever tell you no there's
150. 7:28nothing I'm just telling I have

153. 7:33sir I was being asked a number of
154. 7:37questions here I was struggling to
155. 7:39remember
156. 7:40them there were lots of things that had
157. 7:43gone
158. 7:45on during this time
159. 7:48period that had nothing to do with
160. 7:50Monica
161. 7:52Lewinsky you know I believed then I
162. 7:56believe now that Monica Lewinsky could
163. 7:59have sworn out an honest
164. 8:01affidavit that under reasonable
165. 8:04circumstances and without the benefit of
166. 8:07what Linda trip did to her would have
167. 8:11given her a chance not to be a witness
168. 8:13in this
169. 8:14case so I didn't have perfect memory of
170. 8:17all these events that have now in the
171. 8:19last seven months since Miss Lewinsky
172. 8:22was kept for several hours by four or
173. 8:25five of your lawyers and four or five
174. 8:26FBI
175. 8:27agents uh as if she were a serious
176. 8:30felon uh these things have become the
177. 8:33most important matters in the world at
178. 8:35the moment they were occurring many
179. 8:37other things were going
180. 8:40on it now appears to me they didn't
181. 8:43because they were afraid I would give
182. 8:44them a truthful answer and that there
183. 8:46had been some communication between you
184. 8:48and Miss trip and them and they were
185. 8:50trying to set me up and trick me and now
186. 8:52you seem to be complaining that they
187. 8:54didn't do a good enough job I did my
188. 8:57best sir at this time I did not know
189. 9:00what I now know about this a lot of
190. 9:03other things were going on in my life
191. 9:06did I want this to come out no was I
192. 9:08embarrassed about it yes did I ask her
193. 9:11to lie about it no did I believe there
194. 9:13could be a truthful affidavit absolutely
195. 9:16now that's all I know to say about this
196. 9:18I will continue to answer your questions
197. 9:21as best I
198. 9:23can my goal in this deposition was to be
199. 9:28truthful but but not particularly
200. 9:30helpful I did not wish to do the work of
201. 9:33the Jones lawyers I deplored what they
202. 9:36were doing I deplored the innocent
203. 9:38people they were tormenting and
204. 9:40traumatizing I deplored their illegal
205. 9:42leaking I deplored the fact that they
206. 9:45knew once they knew our evidence that
207. 9:47this was a bogus lawsuit and that
208. 9:49because of the funding they had from my
209. 9:52political enemies they were putting
210. 9:54ahead I deplored it but I was determined
211. 9:58to walk through the mind field of this
212. 9:59deposition without violating the law and
213. 10:02I believe I
214. 10:05did Mr President it's not our intent to
215. 10:09embarrass you but since we have to look
216. 10:11among other things at obstruction of
217. 10:13justice questions of obstruction of
218. 10:15justice and perjury the answer to some
219. 10:17of these delicate and unfortunate qu
220. 10:19questions are absolutely
221. 10:21required and uh that is the purpose that
222. 10:25we have to ask them for that's not Mr
223. 10:28weberg with respect you don't need to
224. 10:30know the answer for that if the answer
225. 10:33no matter what the answer is it wouldn't
226. 10:35constitute perjury because it wasn't
227. 10:37sexual relations as defined by the judge
228. 10:41the only reason you need to know that is
229. 10:42for some other reason it couldn't have
230. 10:44anything to do with
231. 10:46purgy if she says that you kissed her
232. 10:48breast would she be
233. 10:50ly I'm going to revert to my former
234. 10:52statement okay if Monica Lewinsky says
235. 10:55that while you were in the Oval Office
236. 10:57area you touched her genitalia would be
237. 10:59ly and that calls for a yes no or
238. 11:02reverting to your former statement I
239. 11:04will revert to my statement on that if
240. 11:06Monica Lewinsky says that you used a
241. 11:07cigar as a sexual aid with her in the
242. 11:09Oval Office area would you be
243. 11:13blind yes no or or won't answer I will
244. 11:16revert to my former statement if Monica
245. 11:19Lewinsky says that you had phone sex
246. 11:21with her would she be
247. 11:26lying well that is at least in general
248. 11:30terms I think is covered by my statement
249. 11:33I address that in my statement and that
250. 11:35I don't believe it's let me read let me
251. 11:37Define phone sex for purposes of my
252. 11:39question phone sex occurs when a party
253. 11:41to a phone conversation masturbates
254. 11:44while the other party is talking in a
255. 11:46sexually explicit Manner and the
256. 11:48question is if Monica Linsky says that
257. 11:50you had phone sex with her would she be
258. 11:52lying I think that is covered by my
259. 11:57statement well let me finish this since
260. 11:59I formed an opinion early in
261. 12:021996 once I got into this unfortunate
262. 12:05and wrong
263. 12:06conduct that when I stopped it which I
264. 12:11knew I'd have to do and which I should
265. 12:12have done a long time before I
266. 12:15did that she would talk about it not
267. 12:18because Monica Lewinsky is a bad person
268. 12:20she's basically a good girl she's a good
269. 12:22young woman with a good heart and a good
270. 12:25mind I think she is burdened by some
271. 12:27unfortunate conditions of her her
272. 12:31upbringing but she's basically a good
273. 12:33person but I knew that the minute there
274. 12:35was no longer any contact she would talk
275. 12:37about this she would have to she
276. 12:39couldn't help it it was a it was a part
277. 12:41of her psyche so I had put myself at
278. 12:44risk sir I was not trying to buy her
279. 12:46silence or get Vernon Jordan to buy her
280. 12:49silence I thought she was a good person
281. 12:51she had not been involved with me for a
282. 12:52long time in an improper way several
283. 12:55months and I wanted to help her get on
284. 12:57with her life it's just as simple was
285. 13:02that and in addition to that I have
286. 13:07sustained a a breathtaking number of
287. 13:11leaks of grand jury
288. 13:13proceedings and so I think I am right to
289. 13:18answer all the questions about
290. 13:21perjury but not to say things which will
291. 13:25be forever in the historic animals of
292. 13:28the United un States because of this
293. 13:31unprecedented videotape and may be
294. 13:33leaked at any time I just think it's a
295. 13:35mistake and so I'm doing my best to
296. 13:38cooperate with the grand jury and still
297. 13:41protect myself my family and my
298. 13:46office Mr President let's move ahead to
299. 13:49the episode uh on November 29
300. 13:531993 in which uh Mrs Willie met you in
301. 13:56your office at the oval um
302. 13:59the uh the subject matter of the 60
303. 14:01Minutes broadcast a few months ago you
304. 14:03recall that episode I certainly do uh Mr
305. 14:06President in fact on that date you did
306. 14:08make sexual advances on Kathleen Willie
307. 14:10is that not correct that's false uh you
308. 14:13did grab her breast as she said I did
309. 14:16not uh you did place your hand on her
310. 14:19growing area as she said no I didn't and
311. 14:22you placed her hand on your genitals did
312. 14:24you
313. 14:25not Mr Bennett I didn't do any of that
314. 14:28and
315. 14:29the questions you're asking I think
316. 14:31betray the bias of this operation that
317. 14:33has troubled me for a long time you know
318. 14:36what evidence was released after the 60
319. 14:38Minutes
320. 14:40broadcast that I think pretty well
321. 14:42shattered Kathleen Wily's credibility
