Upwork Job Searches That Gets You Job Quickly — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I know of freelancers who spend 3 hours
- 0:03scrolling through Upwork jobs and end up
- 0:06applying to zero. Meanwhile, I found
- 0:10five perfect projects in just 12 minutes
- 0:13and landed two clients in one week. What
- 0:16was the difference between me and such
- 0:18freelancers? It's a simple search hack
- 0:21that 99 freelancers do not know about.
- 0:24If you are still using Upwork's default
- 0:27field, refreshing homepage, or even
- 0:31typing random keys and praying, hoping
- 0:34for a good job, you're about to discover
- 0:37why you are only seeing $5 per hour kind
- 0:40of jobs and the good jobs are going to
- 0:43other people.
- 0:51Few months ago, let's call this person
- 0:54Mr. K. Mr. K is an AI automation expert,
- 0:58was about to quit Upwork. He's been
- 1:01freelancing for some years now, and he
- 1:03had great skills to be honest. But he
- 1:06found himself always competing with
- 1:08other freelancers before he would apply.
- 1:10Dozens of people had applied for that
- 1:12job already, and he was already tired.
- 1:15Then he discovered what I'm about to
- 1:18show you. Within 30 days, his project
- 1:22value went from $500 to $3,000. But here
- 1:26is the crazy part. He wasn't working
- 1:28more hours. Neither did he change to a
- 1:31new skill. He just changed how he
- 1:34started searching and finding jobs on
- 1:36Upwork. Here is what not to do. Do not
- 1:40scroll past jobs that you do not want.
- 1:43Let me explain. The Upwork algorithm
- 1:46thinks that whatever you're scrolling
- 1:48past and spend up to 2 seconds on,
- 1:50you're interested in it and it will
- 1:52bring such to your timeline again.
- 1:55Instead, do this. Find the job that fits
- 1:58into your ideal kind of project. Even if
- 2:01you're not ready to apply to such job,
- 2:03save them. Saving those jobs tells the
- 2:05Upwork algorithm that you love this kind
- 2:07of jobs and you want it to keep showing
- 2:09you this kind of job subsequently. Even
- 2:11jobs that has already hired another
- 2:14freelancer or has sent several invites
- 2:18to other freelancers, but it fits
- 2:20perfectly to your skill set, save it,
- 2:22too. It also tells the Upwork algorithm
- 2:25that you're interested in such kind of
- 2:27jobs, too. But when you see jobs that
- 2:29you're not interested in and they're
- 2:31popping up on your timeline, thumbs down
- 2:33on them. Thumbing down on those jobs
- 2:36tells the Upwork algorithm that you
- 2:38don't want to see this kind of jobs
- 2:39again. And when you thumbs down and you
- 2:41asked why you should click on not
- 2:43interested, he lets the Upwork algorithm
- 2:45know that you don't want these kind of
- 2:47jobs popping up on your timeline
- 2:48anymore. Let me even ask you, how many
- 2:51hours did it take you last week to
- 2:53search for jobs on Upwork, just
- 2:55searching for jobs, not submitting
- 2:57proposals, not applying for anything,
- 2:59just searching and scrolling. How long
- 3:01did it take you? If it takes you more
- 3:02than 30 minutes, then you should know
- 3:05that you're doing something wrong. While
- 3:06you might have been struggling scrolling
- 3:08through 15 search results or jobs on
- 3:12your timeline, the smart freelancers
- 3:14have already put system in place that
- 3:16they getting notifications of jobs that
- 3:18are dropping immediately they are posted
- 3:20and they're getting notifications so
- 3:22they are able to apply as soon as
- 3:23possible before those jobs that they
- 3:26applied for comes to your timeline. Best
- 3:28believe that those freelancers have
- 3:30applied for it or are even hired by the
- 3:32clients. Now, here is where it gets
- 3:34interesting. There's a specific feature
- 3:36on Upwork that freelancers do not pay
- 3:40attention to that when you pay attention
- 3:42to it, it gets you 80% of the best
- 3:45clients out there on Upwork. It's called
- 3:47saved searches. And here is how it
- 3:50works. Instead of searching manually
- 3:52every day on Upwork, you create smart
- 3:55searches on Upwork once and Upwork
- 3:58automatically finds jobs that match
- 4:01those safe searches you have. Step one,
- 4:04the perfect search query. Don't just
- 4:06search for broad terms like automation.
- 4:09Be specific. For me, I search for things
- 4:12like Trello, Zapia, Air Table. The more
- 4:15specific your searches are, the better
- 4:17the results for you. Step two, the
- 4:20filter magic. Most people end at step
- 4:22one, but in step two, that is where the
- 4:25real magic is. And I'm going to show
- 4:27you. After I do my search, I set up
- 4:29filters that eliminate time wasters. I
- 4:32take payment verified only jobs, jobs
- 4:36posted in the last 24 hours, fixed price
- 4:39jobs that are within 500 to $1,000 or
- 4:42hourly jobs that are within $30 and
- 4:44above. Now, step three. When all of this
- 4:48filtering is done, under the search I
- 4:51have done, I click on save search. What
- 4:54you might not know is that you can have
- 4:56as many saved searches as possible. you
- 4:58can have for Air Table, Zapia,
- 5:00Monday.com, Trello as much as possible
- 5:02so that when you come back to the app to
- 5:05apply for jobs within those tools or
- 5:07niches you want, you have created list
- 5:10that you just click on and get the jobs
- 5:12that fall under that fall under those
- 5:15specific tool or skill sets. But here is
- 5:18one mistake that even smart freelancers
- 5:20make with their saved searches. They
- 5:23create the safe searches and forget
- 5:25about them. Not realizing that the most
- 5:27successful freelancers do something
- 5:29differently every week with those safe
- 5:32searches. Every weekend, let's say
- 5:34Saturday and Sunday, I spend 15 minutes
- 5:37each day within those weekends to do
- 5:39something I call search audits. Here's
- 5:41what I do within those 15 minutes that
- 5:43help me to keep having clients send me
- 5:45direct messages or even invites for
- 5:48jobs. Number one, I review performance.
- 5:51I review the searches that brought me
- 5:53the best leads for that week. If a saved
- 5:56search do not bring me any lead, I try
- 5:58to modify it or delete it. Here's what I
- 6:01mean. When I create my saved searches,
- 6:03is expected that I click on those save
- 6:05searches to search for jobs. Right? When
- 6:08I click on them and I apply for jobs,
- 6:10it's expected that I either land the
- 6:12job, my proposal is viewed, or I get
- 6:14into a conversation with that client.
- 6:18That is a best lead. But if after having
- 6:20the safe searches, I apply for those
- 6:22jobs and none of this happened, probably
- 6:25something is wrong with my sales
- 6:27searches, especially if I have done
- 6:29everything good like writing a good
- 6:31proposal, applying early, adding my
- 6:34portfolio, and all that is done by the
- 6:36books of submitting a good proposal.
- 6:40Number two, I add new keywords. This one
- 6:43is very crucial. I look at jobs I have
- 6:46landed in recent times and I look at
- 6:49keywords that the client added to the
- 6:51job description that is not in my key
- 6:54search words and I'll add it in. For
- 6:56instance, if I had process optimization
- 6:59saved as a keyword from what I've been
- 7:03saving as my save search and a job I
- 7:05recently landed, the client had um
- 7:07workflow automation. I'll most likely
- 7:10change what I had as process
- 7:12optimization to workflow optimization,
- 7:15especially if I realize that that word
- 7:17is being added to most of the jobs I'm
- 7:20seeing or I've been applying to and
- 7:23getting response from. Number three,
- 7:25study the competition. I'll always look
- 7:27at what other freelancers in my niche
- 7:30are doing. I can go as far as looking at
- 7:32jobs that they landed and looking at the
- 7:35keywords on the job and reverse engineer
- 7:38on those keyword. This is what I mean.
- 7:41If they landed a job, I can click on the
- 7:43job they landed, read through the job
- 7:44description, look at the keywords that
- 7:46were added to the job description under
- 7:48the skill aspect, pick those skills or
- 7:51keywords and add them to my sales search
- 7:53or even add them to my own profile and
- 7:56under the skill or in my about page.
- 7:59Now, there are two things this 15
- 8:01minutes I spend on the platform does for
- 8:03me. Aside having for me to move around,
- 8:06audit things and do all of that. It also
- 8:09helps Upwork know that I'm busy on this
- 8:11platform and for me to remain on this
- 8:13platform and pressing things, changing
- 8:15things. It shows that I'm willing or
- 8:18ready to receive clients. So the
- 8:20algorithm can pick me as someone who is
- 8:22interested and ready for a job because
- 8:24of the activities I'm doing and push me
- 8:26to clients who are ready to hire at that
- 8:28moment. I also need to mention to you
- 8:31that you see that place in your Upwork
- 8:33account on on your timeline that says
- 8:36best matches to be honest those are the
- 8:38best places you can get jobs. So click
- 8:41on the best matches apply for them.
- 8:42Reason being that at the back end of the
- 8:44clients where they will be seeing people
- 8:46who apply for jobs. If you click on that
- 8:48best matches and apply, it shows the
- 8:50client that this freelancer is a best
- 8:52fit for you. Meaning there are skills
- 8:54you have put on your profile that
- 8:57matches with jobs that have those
- 8:59keywords also on their job post. That is
- 9:02why you're finding them on that best
- 9:04matches. Now, there's one key element
- 9:06that separates freelancers who find
- 9:09occasional jobs from freelancers who
- 9:12have clients lining up in their DM,
- 9:14sending them direct messages, sending
- 9:15them invites. And I'm going to tell you,
- 9:17you need to stop thinking like a job
- 9:19seeker and start thinking and
- 9:21positioning yourself as a consultant for
- 9:23job opportunities. One of the things
- 9:25that changed for Mr. K that I narrated
- 9:27the story at the beginning of this video
- 9:29is that he started applying for jobs
- 9:32that fit into his skill. He wasn't just
- 9:34now applying to any job and everything
- 9:36just because he wanted to make money
- 9:38whether they they were below his pay or
- 9:40his worth. This time he was more
- 9:42strategic and any job that didn't fit
- 9:44into his skill set, he did away with
- 9:47them. What you don't know is that the
- 9:48algorithm notices your activity on the
- 9:50platform. If you keep applying for
- 9:52lowpaying jobs, especially if you have a
- 9:54high paying skill, it will keep bringing
- 9:56such jobs and even such invites your
- 9:58way. But when you keep rejecting those
- 10:01jobs or thumbing down those jobs that do
- 10:03not fit into what you want, especially
- 10:06with their pay, it will start bringing
- 10:08up jobs that you applied to that the pay
- 10:10is reasonable, the skill set fit into
- 10:13what you are doing because that is what
- 10:14you are engaging with. All right, here's
- 10:17your homework and I want you to do it
- 10:19today. Will you? I know you said yes.
- 10:22First, go and clean up your job feed. If
- 10:26you find a job that doesn't fit into
- 10:28what you want, you're not interested in,
- 10:29thumbs down. And if it is something
- 10:32you're interested in, whether the job
- 10:34has hired somebody or it's interviewing
- 10:37people already or more people have
- 10:39applied for it, you're not applying for
- 10:40it, save that job. Secondly, go ahead
- 10:43and create at least three safe searches
- 10:46with the method I taught you in the
- 10:48course of this video. Thirdly, go ahead
- 10:51and set a 15 minutes weekly reminder
- 10:54that helps you audit your searches at
- 10:57the end of the week. Now, I want you to
- 11:00do this consistently for 7 days and come
- 11:02back to this video and tell me what the
- 11:04results was. Now, tell me, what's your
- 11:07biggest frustration with finding jobs on
- 11:09Upwork? Make sure that whatever you're
- 11:12complaining about, I have not talked
- 11:13about it on this channel. If not, I'll
- 11:15refer you back to that. But if I've not
- 11:17talked about it, I just might have a
- 11:19solution for you. I read comments and
- 11:21I'll respond to you. And if I need to
- 11:24make an elaborate video on it, I'll make
- 11:26sure to mention it to you. Remember, you
- 11:28should stop hoping for good jobs and
- 11:31start creating a system that finds those
- 11:34jobs for you. If this video helped you,
- 11:36hit the subscribe button and help me
- 11:39give it a thumbs up so that it pushes
- 11:40the video to more people that find this
- 11:43video valuable. and I'll see you in my
- 11:46next video. Do take care.
