- 0:00Hello everyone. So, how are you all?
- 0:01Hope you are doing very well. So guys,
- 0:03in today’s video, we are going to
- 0:05talk about a story by Manohar Malgonkar
- 0:07titled "Upper Division Love." Now, this
- 0:10story is about love and romance, and
- 0:13the kind of love that is one-sided. And
- 0:16when there is one-sided love, a
- 0:18heartbreak is inevitable. So, in this
- 0:20story too, many hearts are going to
- 0:22break. Now, why are hearts breaking?
- 0:24Whose heart is breaking? We will only
- 0:25find out in the story. So, why are we
- 0:27wasting time? Let’s quickly start the
- 0:29story. Before starting the story, let
- 0:31me introduce you to the characters. Let
- 0:33me introduce the characters so the
- 0:34story is easier to follow. So, the
- 0:36first character is the Narrator, who
- 0:38will be narrating this story. He will
- 0:39be telling it to us. He is an LDC clerk
- 0:42, meaning a Lower Division Clerk. The
- 0:44next character is Sundarbala.
- 0:45Sundarbala is an actress. And which
- 0:48film is she an actress in? She is the
- 0:50actress in the film "Phool." The next
- 0:52character is Ramakant. Ramakant is the
- 0:54hero, or actor, of the film "Phool."
- 0:57The next character is Fatty. Fatty is
- 1:00the director. Now, Fatty is not his
- 1:02real name. He is a bit chubby. He comes
- 1:04from a well-to-do background, so that
- 1:07is why he is referred to as "Fatty" in
- 1:09this story. The next character is
- 1:11Santoshak Singh, who is a close friend
- 1:13of our narrator. The next character is
- 1:16Sheelamati. What is she? She is also an
- 1:18actress. And which company is she an
- 1:19actress for? She is an actress for the
- 1:21I-B Film Company. These are the
- 1:23characters you need to keep in mind
- 1:24while listening to the story. So
- 1:26let’s start right away. The story
- 1:28begins with our LDC clerk who is not
- 1:32very wealthy. He is a Lower Division
- 1:34Clerk. Right? So he isn't very rich. He
- 1:37falls in love with an actress named
- 1:40Sundarbala. A film star whom our
- 1:42ordinary LDC clerk falls in love with.
- 1:46It was one-sided love. The love was so
- 1:48deep that our LDC gentleman would keep
- 1:51three posters of Sundarbala in his room
- 1:55and a passport-sized photo in his
- 1:57wallet. And in his mind, there was only
- 2:00one song playing: "If your name isn't
- 2:03written on my heart, and your photo
- 2:06isn't in my wallet." So these songs
- 2:08were playing in the mind and heart of
- 2:10our LDC friend. Moving on, whenever our
- 2:13LDC friend would head to the office,
- 2:15you must have seen many banners of
- 2:18actors and actresses on the way. Photos
- 2:20put up, posters displayed. Right? For
- 2:23the promotion of their films or
- 2:24something else. So whenever our LDC
- 2:26friend would see a poster of Sundarbala
- 2:29, he would just keep staring at it for
- 2:31the longest time. Standing there and
- 2:33staring at them was his main job.
- 2:35That’s how his days were passing by.
- 2:37Now, one day, our LDC friend goes to a
- 2:40stationery shop named Buchumji Store.
- 2:44You have to remember the name of this
- 2:45store too. Buchumji Store. He was
- 2:47standing there when a long car arrives.
- 2:50It stops outside the store. A beautiful
- 2:53lady steps out of it. She had two
- 2:55bodyguards with her. Now, who was this
- 2:57lady? She was our Sundarbala. So,
- 3:00Sundarbala comes inside the store. As
- 3:02soon as she enters the store, the
- 3:04narrator, the LDC clerk, was already
- 3:06standing there. So Sundarbala thinks,
- 3:08who is this? He must be someone who
- 3:10works at the store. So Sundarbala asks
- 3:12him if she could find a golden fountain
- 3:15pen studded with diamonds. Now, the
- 3:17narrator is unable to say anything.
- 3:19Before he can speak, the man working at
- 3:21the store says, "Ma'am, ma'am, come
- 3:22this way, come this way.""The pens are
- 3:24kept at this counter." So Sundarbala
- 3:26walks over to him and starts looking at
- 3:29the pens. Now, the narrator just keeps
- 3:32staring at Sundarbala. He couldn't
- 3:33believe it. It all felt like a dream to
- 3:36him. Just imagine, you like someone,
- 3:39and that person is an actor. Right? You
- 3:42adore a TV star or a film star, and
- 3:44suddenly they come and stand right in
- 3:46front of you. What would you say?
- 3:47You’d go completely blank. You’d
- 3:49just freeze. That was the narrator's
- 3:51situation. He was standing there,
- 3:53wondering how all this was happening.
- 3:54Am I dreaming? This is reality, right?
- 3:57That’s all he was thinking. Then he
- 3:59thinks, let me go to Sundarbala and
- 4:01talk to her. As he moves forward a
- 4:03little, both of Sundarbala's bodyguards
- 4:05appear and say, "Look at our muscles,
- 4:07stay away and stand quietly." So the
- 4:09poor narrator quietly stands to the
- 4:11side. Now Sundarbala finishes her
- 4:13shopping and starts heading back. But
- 4:15then she remembers that her glasses
- 4:17were left inside the store. So she
- 4:19turns back around and sees that the
- 4:21narrator is coming towards her with her
- 4:23glasses. Now the narrator approaches
- 4:25Sundarbala and says, "Ma'am, these are
- 4:27your glasses; you forgot them in the
- 4:29store." Sundarbala looks at him and
- 4:31smiles, then after saying thank you,
- 4:33she takes the glasses and leaves, and
- 4:35that’s where the narrator’s plans
- 4:37go south. He drifts off into his own
- 4:39little world. He thinks, "Wow,
- 4:41Sundarbala said thank you to me.""She
- 4:43smiled at me.""This means something is
- 4:46happening between us.""It means we are
- 4:49friends now." In other words, he gets
- 4:51lost in his own dream world. And now he
- 4:53starts thinking that Sundarbala will go
- 4:55crazy in love with him and will chase
- 4:57him with a wedding garland, begging him
- 4:59to marry her. So our narrator starts
- 5:01building castles in the air. He gets
- 5:03lost in a fantasy world. And slowly,
- 5:05time starts to pass. Whenever the
- 5:07narrator got free time, whenever he got
- 5:09a break from his office, what would he
- 5:10do? He would go and stand outside the
- 5:13gate of Gajraj Film Company, where this
- 5:16film, "Phoolwali," was being shot,
- 5:18waiting for the moment when his eyes
- 5:21would meet Sundarbala's and he could
- 5:23catch a glimpse of her. Since the
- 5:26narrator would go there every day
- 5:28whenever he had time, he eventually
- 5:30becomes friends with the watchman
- 5:32standing outside the company. Now, one
- 5:35day the narrator finds out that a side
- 5:38character is needed for this film, so
- 5:41he agrees to do it. He says, "I will
- 5:43play that character myself." I'll be
- 5:44the one playing the role. He gets
- 5:45called inside. Fatty calls him inside.
- 5:48Now, did I tell you who Fatty is? He is
- 5:50the director of this film. The director
- 5:51of the flower movie. So, Fatty calls
- 5:53the narrator and asks him, "Do you know
- 5:55how to speak Hindi?" The narrator
- 5:57replies, "Yes, yes, I know how to speak
- 5:58Hindi." Then Fatty asks, "Do you know
- 6:00how to drive?" The narrator says, "Yes,
- 6:01I know how to drive too." So Fatty says
- 6:03, "Okay, you've got the role." What do
- 6:05you have to do? Let me explain the role
- 6:07to you. I will pay you 10 rupees per
- 6:08day. The narrator is extremely happy.
- 6:10First, he was getting paid to work.
- 6:13Second, he was getting paid to work
- 6:15with Sundarbala. I mean, do you
- 6:16understand? He was getting the golden
- 6:18opportunity to do a movie with his
- 6:20crush. So, he agrees to it. Now our
- 6:23Fatty, the director, explains the role
- 6:25to our narrator. He says, "What do you
- 6:27have to do?""You have to play the role
- 6:30of a Pandit." What is a Pandit? Pandit
- 6:32is used for a robber or a bandit. "You
- 6:34have to play the role of a Pandit.""
- 6:35Sundarbala will be standing there.""
- 6:37What do you have to do?""You have to
- 6:38snatch the chain from her neck and run.
- 6:40" Which means he has to do chain
- 6:41snatching. Our narrator is given a
- 6:43petty thief's job here. Then what
- 6:45happens? The scene begins. The narrator
- 6:48goes up to Sundarbala and tries to
- 6:50snatch her chain. But, the chain was
- 6:53tied so tight that it wouldn't come off
- 6:55, so he pulls a bit too hard. The
- 6:57narrator uses too much force, causing
- 7:00Sundarbala to get hurt on her neck. She
- 7:03gets very angry and annoyed, asking, "
- 7:05What kind of nonsense is this? What are
- 7:06you doing?""If you don't know how to do
- 7:08it, don't do it. Why are you doing this
- 7:09?" She gets furious and agitated like
- 7:11this. Then our Fatty, the director,
- 7:14steps in to mediate. He tries to calm
- 7:16Sundarbala down, saying, "Ma'am, ma'am,
- 7:18sorry, it was a mistake.""Forgive him,
- 7:19consider him a child.""Let's do a
- 7:21retake." So, what happens next? The
- 7:23scene is shot all over again. The
- 7:25narrator returns to Sundarbhala as a
- 7:27thief and tries to snatch her chain,
- 7:30and this time, he actually succeeds. He
- 7:33snatches the chain and runs away. Now,
- 7:35what was supposed to happen in the next
- 7:36scene? Ramakant, the hero of the film,
- 7:38was supposed to catch the narrator. He
- 7:40had to catch that thief and retrieve
- 7:42the chain from him. So, Ramakant starts
- 7:45chasing the narrator. He catches him.
- 7:48He grabs the chain back and hits him.
- 7:50He lands a punch right on his face. As
- 7:52soon as the narrator gets hit in the
- 7:54face, he falls down. Now, see, what was
- 7:57the actual scene supposed to be?
- 7:59Ramakant was supposed to catch the
- 8:02narrator, take the chain back, and
- 8:04punch him. But he wasn't supposed to
- 8:06throw a real punch. He wasn't supposed
- 8:07to hit with full force. He just had to
- 8:09act like he was punching him really
- 8:11hard. But he wasn't supposed to hit him
- 8:12for real. You know that the fight
- 8:14scenes you see are not real. They are
- 8:16just acting. Nobody gets thrown around
- 8:19that hard. But here, what does Ramakant
- 8:21do? He actually punches the narrator
- 8:23for real, which causes the narrator to
- 8:25fall to the ground. Now, look at the
- 8:27audacity of this girl. I mean,
- 8:29Sundarbhala is grinning from ear to ear
- 8:32, laughing at the fact that her hero
- 8:34beat the narrator so hard. So, the
- 8:36narrator's ego gets hurt here. He says,
- 8:39"I used to like you because of your
- 8:41smile.""But today, it's because of your
- 8:43smile that I dislike you.""I hate you."
- 8:45And this is where the revenge begins.
- 8:48The narrator decides that he will
- 8:50definitely take revenge on her. And his
- 8:52first act of revenge is to quit the
- 8:54film. I'm leaving and dropping all my
- 8:55roles. So, the poor fatty comes over.
- 8:57He says, "Okay, okay, listen to me,
- 8:59listen.""Earlier I was paying you 10
- 9:01rupees a day.""Now I will give you 20
- 9:02rupees a day." So, the narrator thinks
- 9:04it's not such a bad deal after all. 20
- 9:06rupees is a lot for one day. So, he
- 9:08agrees. He swallows his anger and
- 9:10accepts the 20 rupees. Now you must be
- 9:11thinking, what kind of person is he?
- 9:13Even after being humiliated like that,
- 9:15he was ready to work again. Well,
- 9:16that's not it. This is also part of the
- 9:18narrator's plan. What is he going to do
- 9:20? He is going to ruin this film now. He
- 9:22is going to spoil this scene of
- 9:24Sundarbala's. So, what does he do? He
- 9:26decides that he will definitely ruin
- 9:29the romantic love scene between
- 9:31Sundarbala and Ramakant. What does he
- 9:33do? He calls his friend whose name is
- 9:35Santoshak Singh. He tells him, "Brother
- 9:36, bring your Bullet over here.""We have
- 9:38a situation." Here, we are talking
- 9:40about the Bullet motorcycle. The bike,
- 9:42to be specific. Not the other kind of
- 9:44bullet. Got it? So, he calls his friend
- 9:47to bring the Bullet. There is a
- 9:49romantic scene happening. We are going
- 9:50to ruin their romantic scene. You must
- 9:52be wondering how they will ruin a
- 9:53romantic scene with a Bullet. You must
- 9:55know that the Bullet motorcycle is very
- 9:58loud. Its noise level is extremely high
- 10:00. So, what happens during the romantic
- 10:02scene? Sundarbala and Ramakant are
- 10:04filming their scene. Suddenly,
- 10:05Santoshak, the narrator's friend,
- 10:07arrives on the Bullet, and because of
- 10:09its loud noise, it creates a huge
- 10:11disturbance. At the location where the
- 10:14film was being shot, it gets so noisy
- 10:16that Sundarbala has to shout her lines,
- 10:19and their scene gets ruined. So, the
- 10:22narrator took his revenge, but he still
- 10:25wasn't satisfied; he had to do
- 10:27something more. Now that this scene was
- 10:30ruined and all of Sundarbala's scenes
- 10:32were finished. Sundarbala tells
- 10:34Ramakant that she has to go to a party
- 10:37at 6:30 PM, a Blero company party. She
- 10:39has been invited there as the chief
- 10:41guest. So, you do one thing: come and
- 10:43pick me up. Then we will both go to the
- 10:45party together. So Ramakant says, "Okay
- 10:47." The narrator overhears their
- 10:49conversation, and a wicked plan starts
- 10:51brewing in his devious mind. So, what
- 10:53happens next? The next day, there was a
- 10:55scene between the narrator and Ramakant
- 10:57, where the narrator had to play a
- 10:59police officer, arrest Ramakant, the
- 11:01hero, handcuff him, put him in a van,
- 11:03and drive him away. That was the scene.
- 11:05The shoot begins, and the director
- 11:08shouts, "Start! One, two, three, start!
- 11:10" So what the narrator does—since he
- 11:12was playing the police officer—he
- 11:14handcuffs Ramakant, puts him in the van
- 11:17, starts the engine, and drives off.
- 11:19The director shouts "Cut! Cut! Cut!"
- 11:21multiple times, but our narrator...he
- 11:23wouldn't dream of stopping the vehicle.
- 11:25He just doesn't stop the car. On top of
- 11:27that, he had stuck a poster onto the
- 11:29van. And what was written on that
- 11:30poster? "Dangerous Lunatic: Keep Away."
- 11:33"Lunatic" means a mentally unstable
- 11:34person. It basically says that a very
- 11:36dangerous madman is inside this van. No
- 11:39one should come near this van. And he
- 11:41parks that van right outside the Bleiro
- 11:43company. Where Ramakant was supposed to
- 11:45arrive with Sundarbala. The narrator
- 11:48parks the van right outside that
- 11:50company. Ramakant was inside that van.
- 11:53He was handcuffed, and the sign on the
- 11:55van warned everyone that a dangerous
- 11:57lunatic was inside, so they should stay
- 12:00away. So, what happens here is that
- 12:02Ramakant can't get out, and
- 12:04consequently, Sundarbala isn't able to
- 12:07attend the function. So, what happens
- 12:09next? The people who organized the
- 12:11function, what do they do? They call
- 12:13another actress to replace Sundarbala,
- 12:16whose name was Sheelamati. Sheelamati,
- 12:18an actress from Ajay Film Company, is
- 12:21invited as the chief guest since
- 12:23Sundarbala didn't arrive, and the next
- 12:26day, in the newspapers, Sheela's photos
- 12:29are printed instead of Sundarbala's for
- 12:32that event. And with this, our LDC
- 12:35clerk takes his revenge on both
- 12:38Sundarbala and Ramakant. With that,
- 12:41this story comes to an end. I hope you
- 12:43liked the explanation. I hope you
