Unlocking the Old Testament Part 7 - Genesis 6 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02it's the story of how God was seeking a
- 0:06bride for his son each book is different
- 0:09from every other book I'm trying to give
- 0:11you the keys for you to unlock it for
- 0:15[Music]
- 0:27yourself I think most people are very
- 0:30familiar with the story of
- 0:32Joseph if you were brought up in church
- 0:34you were most certainly taught this in
- 0:36Sunday school it's a story that appeals
- 0:39to Children the goody wins over the
- 0:41baddies in the end and now Jason Donovan
- 0:44has made it very popular among young
- 0:46people with Andrew Lloyd Weber's Joseph
- 0:49and his Technicolor Dream Coat actually
- 0:52that's probably a mistake it was
- 0:53probably a coat with long sleeves rather
- 0:57than a multicolored garment though the
- 0:59new International Version says it was a
- 1:02richly
- 1:03ornamented certainly it was
- 1:05special but it's almost certainly had
- 1:08long sleeves and the reason for that is
- 1:11that one boy was always given the job of
- 1:14Foreman over the others and while the
- 1:17others had to roll up their sleeves or
- 1:19wear short sleeves for work the foreman
- 1:21had a long sleeved coat and Joseph was
- 1:25put in charge therefore of his brothers
- 1:28and yet he was not the eldest so you can
- 1:30imagine the situation that arose in the
- 1:32family anyway that's beside the point
- 1:35the important thing is that Joseph is
- 1:37the fourth generation the great grandson
- 1:40of
- 1:41Abraham and yet again he's not the
- 1:44eldest there's a clear pattern here the
- 1:48natural Heir does not get the blessing
- 1:51God chooses in his grace who gets it
- 1:54it's usually one of the younger
- 1:56ones and yet there's a great difference
- 2:00between Joseph and the previous three
- 2:02generations God never calls himself the
- 2:05god of Joseph Angels never appear to
- 2:09Joseph though they certainly did to the
- 2:12others and then his brothers are not
- 2:16rejected his brothers are included in
- 2:20The Godly line of Seth so there isn't
- 2:23the same contrast though his brothers
- 2:25are not too good to him at the
- 2:27beginning God never speaks to directly
- 2:30to Joseph maybe you've not noticed that
- 2:33now he certainly uh reveals things in
- 2:37dreams and gives him interpretations of
- 2:39dreams but he never actually talked to
- 2:43Joseph directly nor so far as is the
- 2:46record goes does Joseph ever talk to him
- 2:50so there's a difference here and when
- 2:52you read through the Book of Genesis
- 2:54you're aware that somehow Joseph stands
- 2:57on his
- 2:58own why
- 3:00what's so different about him why are we
- 3:03told his
- 3:04story well one obvious reason is that in
- 3:08the very next book in the Bible we find
- 3:11all this family in Egypt in slavery and
- 3:15somehow you've got to explain how they
- 3:17got there and of course the story of
- 3:20Joseph is the vital link of how Jacob
- 3:23and his family migrated down to Egypt
- 3:26for the same reason as Abraham and Isaac
- 3:29had once gone down to Egypt for famine
- 3:32shortage of food whereas Egypt doesn't
- 3:35depend on rain it's got the Nile coming
- 3:39down from the Ethiopian Highlands so
- 3:42Egypt doesn't depend on any rainfall it
- 3:44doesn't have any it's got a constant
- 3:47supply of moisture in the Nile whereas
- 3:50Israel the land of Israel depends
- 3:52totally on rain for the crops which the
- 3:56West Wind from the Mediterranean brings
- 3:59so at at least the story of Joseph is
- 4:01there to link us with the next part of
- 4:04the Bible and the curtain Falls after
- 4:08Joseph for some 400 years of which we
- 4:12know nothing and when it lifts again the
- 4:16family has become a people of many
- 4:19hundreds of thousands but they're slaves
- 4:22in
- 4:23Egypt well if that's the only reason
- 4:25that the story of Joseph is there then
- 4:27it hardly explains why so so much space
- 4:30is given to his story we are told almost
- 4:34as much detail as
- 4:36Abraham Abraham had what about uh 12
- 4:40chapters devoted to him whereas Joseph
- 4:42has 36 to
- 4:4650 no I've got it wrong Abraham had just
- 4:49about two more chapters but Isaac and
- 4:52Jacob had far less so what's so
- 4:55important about this man why are we told
- 4:58in such detail is it simply the example
- 5:01of a good man and a a moral that good
- 5:04triumphs in the end no it's much more
- 5:06than that there are at least four levels
- 5:09at which you can read the story of
- 5:11Joseph the first level is simply the
- 5:13human level it's a vivid story told
- 5:18superbly with very real characters it's
- 5:20a great adventure Stranger Than Fiction
- 5:24there are some extraordinary
- 5:25coincidences in it and you could really
- 5:28summarize Joseph's life in two chapters
- 5:31chapter one down and chapter 2
- 5:35up and that's what happened to him he
- 5:38went all the way down from being the
- 5:40favorite son of his father to becoming a
- 5:43household slave and he went all the way
- 5:46up from being a forgotten prisoner to
- 5:50being prime minister it's an astonishing
- 5:53story all the way down the social ladder
- 5:56and all the way up again to the very top
- 5:58something about that heals to us and in
- 6:01between we've got the Envy of his
- 6:03brothers and and the key to it all seems
- 6:06to be
- 6:08dreams mind you I don't think Joseph was
- 6:11the most tactless tactful person in the
- 6:14Bible I think he was quite tactless
- 6:16fancy telling his brothers I had a dream
- 6:19in which you all bowed down to me that
- 6:22is not the way to win friends and
- 6:23influence people but uh it was the truth
- 6:27he had the dream whether he should have
- 6:29shared it but then we all mistake when
- 6:32we should share Revelations from God so
- 6:35we mustn't blame him for that that's one
- 6:37level it's a human story and it makes a
- 6:39jolly good musical show in the London
- 6:41West End and thousands will go to see it
- 6:45and many schools have put that on as
- 6:47well now the second level at which you
- 6:50can read the story is to read it from
- 6:54God's
- 6:55angle God is in this story even though
- 6:58he doesn't actually talk to Joseph he's
- 7:01behind the scene he's the invisible God
- 7:04arranging
- 7:05circumstances for his purposes and
- 7:08plans and he chose to reveal through
- 7:11dreams people will accept things in
- 7:13dreams more easily than when they're
- 7:16awake I have some very peculiar dreams
- 7:19usually of arriving at a meeting on the
- 7:21wrong day with the wrong notes at the
- 7:23wrong time and I I wake up sweating it's
- 7:26more a nightmare but it's funny in dream
- 7:29you accept anything as as real and
- 7:33sometimes God needs to speak this way to
- 7:35communicate with us but it always needs
- 7:38an
- 7:39interpretation now Joseph said these
- 7:41dreams were of God and that the
- 7:44interpretation would come from God
- 7:47Daniel would be noted for the same gift
- 7:50God is in fact the main actor in the
- 7:53story though that doesn't come out in
- 7:55the
- 7:55musical God is behind the scenes
- 7:58organizing all this no no direct
- 8:00Miracles but providential
- 8:03circumstances and often that is a way
- 8:05that God works it's not so spectacular
- 8:08or so Sensational but God has a way of
- 8:11arranging meetings with
- 8:13people and the course of your life is
- 8:15changed he's behind the scenes bringing
- 8:19about the Fulfillment of his purpose his
- 8:21overruling this is the very opposite of
- 8:24believing in luck I don't know if you
- 8:26know but the Hebrew word for luck is Gad
- 8:30and you can either live by Gad or by God
- 8:33and I'm sure you've heard the phrase in
- 8:35a former day by Gad that's simply means
- 8:37by luck or The Best of British luck
- 8:40horses shoes at weddings and all that
- 8:42kind of thing amazing how many people
- 8:45live by
- 8:46luck and the national lottery number
- 8:48this week is and people believe that
- 8:52circumstances are the result of chance
- 8:55of
- 8:56luck but Joseph didn't believe that he
- 8:59belied believed his circumstances were
- 9:01overruled by God and that God was behind
- 9:04the things that happened to him didn't
- 9:07see that at the time but he saw it later
- 9:10and you can often see God's hand on your
- 9:12life in hindsight where you didn't
- 9:15realize at the time what was
- 9:17happening in fact the key verse in the
- 9:20story of Joseph is found in chapter 45
- 9:23verse 7 and this is what he said when he
- 9:26finally made himself known to his
- 9:27brothers
- 9:29after humbling them greatly and
- 9:32embarrassing he finally forgave them
- 9:34what they' done to him selling him into
- 9:35slavery and he said this but God sent me
- 9:39ahead of you to preserve for you a
- 9:43Remnant on the earth and to save your
- 9:46lives by a great
- 9:49Deliverance now that's a very very
- 9:52important statement God sent me ahead of
- 9:55you they thought they just got rid of
- 9:58their brother and sold him to some
- 9:59traveling camel Traders as a
- 10:02slave and that's that and they took that
- 10:06special coat of his and covered it with
- 10:08the blood of a goat and took it back to
- 10:10poor old Jacob and said we found this in
- 10:11the field your favorite son must be dead
- 10:15a terrible thing to do especially to Old
- 10:17Jacob but uh God sent me ahead of
- 10:21you see God allows things to happen
- 10:25doesn't Force anyone to do harm to
- 10:28another but but he does allow it and
- 10:31sometimes he allows it for his own
- 10:33purposes and that was the faith that
- 10:36Joseph had God sent me ahead of you and
- 10:39of course that was in fact the result
- 10:41because he became the minister of food
- 10:44he interpreted the dream of pharaoh that
- 10:46there would be Fe seven fat years with
- 10:49good harvests and seven lean years to
- 10:51follow and he said we better store up
- 10:53food now and then we'll have enough to
- 10:55live on and his foresight through that
- 10:58dream actually saved the whole nation of
- 11:01Egypt and his own family when they were
- 11:04short of food and came to Egypt so he
- 11:06became their savior God actually wanted
- 11:10his people in Egypt and this was how it
- 11:13happened why should God want them in
- 11:15Egypt when he'd promised them the land
- 11:17of Israel or the land of Canaan the
- 11:20answer
- 11:21is given to actually given to Abraham
- 11:24years previously God said to Abraham
- 11:27I'll have to leave your family in Egypt
- 11:32for 400 years until the wickedness of
- 11:36the amorites is
- 11:40complete in other words God would not
- 11:42let them take the promised land from
- 11:45those living in it until those living in
- 11:48it became so Dreadful that they had
- 11:51forfeited their right to their lives
- 11:54never mind their land so God is a moral
- 11:57God he wouldn't just push people out and
- 11:59push his own people in it was only when
- 12:01the inhabitants became so Dreadful and
- 12:04archaeology has revealed how Dreadful
- 12:07venial diseases were everywhere in the
- 12:10land of Canaan they were corrupt they
- 12:12were decadent and it was only when they
- 12:15reached the point of no return that God
- 12:17said now you can have their land so any
- 12:22complaint about God's Injustice in
- 12:24giving that land to the Jews is quite
- 12:27mistaken but he had to keep them out of
- 12:30the land until the state of the people
- 12:32in that land was so bad that uh being
- 12:36pushed out of it was just
- 12:39judgment but there were other reasons
- 12:42too God wanted them to become
- 12:45slaves it was all part of his
- 12:48plan to rescue them from slavery so that
- 12:52they would be so Greatful to
- 12:54him they would then live his way and
- 12:56become a model for the whole world to
- 12:58see of how blessed people are when they
- 13:01live under the government of Heaven that
- 13:03was the plan and so he let them get into
- 13:07such problems working seven days a week
- 13:10no pay no land of Their Own no money of
- 13:13their own nothing of their own and it
- 13:16was then that he reached down and
- 13:17rescued them with his mighty hand so
- 13:19that you see it all had to happen and
- 13:22God let it happen for his own purposes
- 13:25he wanted to redeem them and rescue them
- 13:29so that they would know it was God who
- 13:32got them out and into their own land so
- 13:35that's God's angle on the
- 13:37story but we still haven't really got to
- 13:40the heart of the story the next approach
- 13:43or level at which we could read it would
- 13:45be a study of Joseph's
- 13:48character and this is a very remarkable
- 13:52thing because there is nothing said
- 13:56about Joseph that is bad
- 14:00now we've seen already that the Bible
- 14:01tells the whole truth about Abraham
- 14:03Isaac and Jacob and they certainly had
- 14:05their weaknesses and
- 14:07sins but not one word of criticism is
- 14:10leveled at
- 14:12Joseph I've told you already the worst
- 14:15thing he ever did which was just to be a
- 14:16bit tactless and tell his brothers about
- 14:19the dream but there's no Trace
- 14:23whatever of a wrong attitude or reaction
- 14:26in Joseph's character even his reactions
- 14:30to going all the way down the social
- 14:33letter there's no trace of resentment no
- 14:37complaining no saying why has God done
- 14:40this no no sense of Injustice that he
- 14:42should finish up in prison on death row
- 14:45in Pharaoh's
- 14:47jail furthermore even though he was far
- 14:50from home and totally unknown he
- 14:52maintained his Integrity when parer's
- 14:56wife tried to seduce him and when she
- 14:59tried his reaction was how could I sin
- 15:02against
- 15:03God like this and you know that she
- 15:06falsely accused him then which put him
- 15:08on death row in the
- 15:10jail but not one word of criticism even
- 15:14of Piper's wife this is an astonishing
- 15:18portrait furthermore the man even at
- 15:21rockbottom his concern seems to have
- 15:23been primarily to help
- 15:26others there was Pharaoh's cup Bearer
- 15:30and his Baker on death row and Joseph
- 15:34sought to comfort them he is a man who
- 15:37seems to have no concern for himself but
- 15:40a deep concern for everybody else and
- 15:43all the way down he never once question
- 15:45God never once doubted that God knew
- 15:48what he was
- 15:49doing whereas we
- 15:52do and then his reaction to going up to
- 15:55the top I don't know which is the bigger
- 15:58test of a man's character being taken
- 16:00all the way down to the bottom or being
- 16:01lifted up to the top I think probably
- 16:03the second is the biggest test of his
- 16:06character but look at his reaction to
- 16:09the brothers who' sold him into
- 16:11slavery he gave them
- 16:14food and he wouldn't charge them for it
- 16:16he put the money back in their
- 16:18sacks he forgave them with
- 16:23cheers he interceded for them with
- 16:27pharaoh and he purchased for them the
- 16:29best land in the Nile delter a land
- 16:31called Goan and said I'm going to look
- 16:34after you they'd thrown him out and told
- 16:37his old daddy was dead but here he is
- 16:40providing every need of this what a man
- 16:45so Joseph is unspoiled either by
- 16:49humiliation or by
- 16:51Honor he's a man of total
- 16:54Integrity he's the only one so presented
- 16:57in the Old Testament
- 16:59there isn't any other character
- 17:01presented like this even King David you
- 17:05know what his faults were and you will
- 17:08find in every other full portrait we get
- 17:11the whole picture but here the whole
- 17:13picture seems to be blameless it's very
- 17:17unusual we read of David's sin we read
- 17:20of Elijah's cowardice we read all the
- 17:24weaknesses and we know that as the New
- 17:26Testament says of Elijah they were men
- 17:28of like passions to ourselves but here's
- 17:31a man who has utter
- 17:34Integrity there's only one person in the
- 17:36Old Testament like this and there's only
- 17:38one person in the New Testament like
- 17:40this you know who that is now there is
- 17:44one chapter in the middle of the story
- 17:47of Joseph that comes as a shock it's
- 17:49about his brother Judah and if you've
- 17:53read through Genesis recently you must
- 17:54have felt what a shock it is suddenly in
- 17:56the middle of the story of this good man
- 17:59there is actually a contrast in his own
- 18:01brother Judah a man who visits a
- 18:04prostitute who is actually his
- 18:06daughter-in-law with a veil on and
- 18:08incest happens and it's a sorted story
- 18:11and suddenly that story comes right in
- 18:13the middle of Joseph it's almost as if
- 18:16to highlight
- 18:18Joseph and to say his brothers were bad
- 18:21people but Joseph wasn't the contrast is
- 18:25marked I can only think of that as the
- 18:27reason why that sorted instant instance
- 18:30of Judah is put right suddenly in the
- 18:33Middle with no
- 18:34connection as if just as Abraham had a
- 18:37contrast with lot and Ishmael with Isaac
- 18:39and Jacob with Esau it's as if he is a
- 18:42brother who
- 18:44highlights the Integrity of this man so
- 18:47we're getting very near to the reason
- 18:50why the story of Joseph is there but we
- 18:52haven't yet got there I want you to put
- 18:56together in your minds the three levels
- 18:59at which we have discussed this story so
- 19:02far the human story of a man who was
- 19:05taken all down to the bottom and then
- 19:07right up to the top and who became and
- 19:10is called the savior of his people and
- 19:13the Lord of
- 19:15Egypt then we're looking at God's
- 19:18overruling of this man's life that he
- 19:21allowed that to happen and pln it to
- 19:24save his people and then we've looked at
- 19:26a man of total integrity
- 19:29who all the way down and all the way up
- 19:32remained a man of Truth and honest
- 19:35goodness who does that remind you
- 19:38of the answer is Jesus
- 19:41himself Joseph becomes what we call a
- 19:45type of
- 19:47Jesus a foreshadowing of Jesus way back
- 19:51in the Old Testament it's as if God is
- 19:54showing us in the life of Joseph what he
- 19:57was going to do with his own
- 19:59son that his own son like Joseph would
- 20:02be rejected by his Brethren and taken
- 20:05all the way down to utter
- 20:07humiliation and then raised to be Savior
- 20:10and Lord of his people it's all there
- 20:14and the parallels are
- 20:16remarkable the more you read the story
- 20:18of Joseph the more you see this picture
- 20:21of Jesus as if God all along knew what
- 20:25he was going to do and was going to give
- 20:27hints to his people
- 20:29we find that all the way through the Old
- 20:31Testament one of my favorite little
- 20:33books is called Christ in all the
- 20:35scriptures by a lady called Mrs am
- 20:38hodkin any of you know it lovely little
- 20:40book and she just goes through every one
- 20:42of the 66 books in the Bible and shows
- 20:45us Jesus in that book you see Jesus
- 20:48himself said search the scriptures for
- 20:51they bear witness of me and yet he's
- 20:55talking about the Old
- 20:57Testament now now when you read the Old
- 20:59Testament you should be looking for
- 21:01Jesus for his likeness for his
- 21:05shadow Jesus is himself the substance
- 21:09but his shadow Falls right across the
- 21:11pages of the Old Testament and
- 21:13especially in
- 21:15Genesis now once you've seen that that
- 21:19Joseph is a picture of Jesus of God's
- 21:24answer as Abraham Isaac and Jacob are
- 21:27models of our faith faith in God Joseph
- 21:30is a model of God's response to that
- 21:32faith and how he can take the life of a
- 21:36men and deliver his people from their
- 21:40need and lift him up to be Savior and
- 21:43Lord once you've got that key you start
- 21:46turning back the pages of Genesis and
- 21:50suddenly you find Jesus in so many
- 21:53different
- 21:54places and I just want to take you
- 21:57through five of them there are others
- 22:00that you can look for the first all the
- 22:04genealogies of Genesis are in fact the
- 22:07genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ and
- 22:11if you read Matthew 1 and Luke 3 you'll
- 22:13see those genees you'll find in Luke 3
- 22:1724 names from the book of
- 22:19Genesis he is in this line of Seth that
- 22:23line comes straight down to the son of
- 22:25Mary so we're reading his life line and
- 22:30if you are in Christ you are reading
- 22:32your own family
- 22:34tree this is our
- 22:36genealogy these are the most important
- 22:39ancestors we have because through faith
- 22:43in Christ you become a son of
- 22:46Abraham you've become part of this
- 22:49line you are in Christ and you've
- 22:52inherited this history so you're not
- 22:55reading about their history now you're
- 22:56reading about our history now this is
- 22:59your family
- 23:01tree uh my wife and I went to Petworth
- 23:04house that's not far away from here is
- 23:06it bit further east not long ago for a
- 23:10day out and uh that was owned by The
- 23:13Dukes of norblin the Peres and coming
- 23:16from nland I was very interested I went
- 23:18to college with one of the Peres and uh
- 23:22so I was interested when I saw their
- 23:24family tree on a long chart on the wall
- 23:27and you know it went right back to to
- 23:29Adam they traced their family tree back
- 23:32to Adam the pures of North umberland I
- 23:34felt like saying I could do that if only
- 23:37I knew some of the names in the gaps but
- 23:39I could do that we all go back to Adam
- 23:42but we all go back to
- 23:44Abraham in Christ this is our genealogy
- 23:47because it was
- 23:48his it is Jesus family tree that you're
- 23:52reading in Genesis oh but there are much
- 23:54deeper links than that the next thing I
- 23:56want to say is that again and again you
- 23:59look at someone in Genesis and you see
- 24:02Jesus you look at Joseph you see Jesus
- 24:06you look at Isaac and you see Jesus
- 24:09let's go back to the time when Abraham
- 24:12was told to offer Isaac he was told to
- 24:14go to a mountain a specific Mountain
- 24:17years later that mountain was Mount
- 24:20Maria Mount golgatha Mount Calvary a
- 24:25place where God sacrificed his only
- 24:28begotten son it's interesting that in
- 24:31Genesis 24 it says Isaac was Abraham's
- 24:34only beloved
- 24:36Son and I've told you already that Isaac
- 24:39was not a boy he was in his early 30s
- 24:42when that happened and therefore he was
- 24:44strong enough to resist his father but
- 24:47he submitted to being bound and put on
- 24:49the
- 24:50altar now God stopped Abraham at The
- 24:53crucial point and provided another
- 24:56sacrifice
- 24:58it was a
- 24:59Ram with its head caught in
- 25:04Thorns Behold The Ram of God that takes
- 25:07away the sin of the world I don't like
- 25:08the word lamb applied to Jesus it's
- 25:10always portrayed as a little cuddly
- 25:12white woolly thing in stainless windows
- 25:15it's a ram No sacrifice was offered of a
- 25:18little cuddly lamb it was a one-year-old
- 25:21male Ram with
- 25:22horns and Jesus in The Book of
- 25:25Revelation is the Ram with seven horns
- 25:27it's not a little cuddly picture it's a
- 25:29strong picture a ram of
- 25:32God and God provided a ram for Abraham
- 25:35to offer in place of his son a Ram with
- 25:39his head caught in the
- 25:42thorns and God gave a new name to
- 25:44himself I am always your
- 25:47provider
- 25:50Yahweh
- 25:51yah God my
- 25:53provider and in that very Mountain
- 25:56centuries later and another young man in
- 25:59his early 30s was
- 26:01sacrificed with his head caught in the
- 26:03Thorns do you see there picture of
- 26:05Jesus and what about that strange
- 26:08encounter Abraham had with a man who was
- 26:10both a king and a priest and who was
- 26:14King over the city
- 26:16Salem which later became
- 26:19Jerusalem and when Abraham was on his
- 26:22way back from a big battle to rescue his
- 26:24family who had been kidnapped came back
- 26:27with the spoils from the enemy and as he
- 26:31came near the City of Salem which was
- 26:33then a pagan City nothing to do with the
- 26:37this Godly line but there was this
- 26:39strange figure
- 26:41melchisedec a priest and a king that's a
- 26:44very unusual combination never found in
- 26:47Israel and this King priest brought out
- 26:50bread and wine for Abraham and his
- 26:53troops to refresh them and restore them
- 26:57and Abraham gave gave him a tenth of all
- 26:59the spoils of the battle a tithe of the
- 27:03treasure and in our new testament it
- 27:05says Jesus is a priest Forever After the
- 27:09order of
- 27:11melchisedec another little glimpse of
- 27:14our Lord Jesus
- 27:16Christ let's go back to Jacob's Ladder
- 27:19do you remember Jacob the day he ran
- 27:20away from home sleeping out at night
- 27:22with his head on a stone as a pillow and
- 27:25he dreamt and he saw not so much a
- 27:27ladder as an escalator the Hebrew
- 27:29implies the ladder was moving and there
- 27:31was one ladder moving up and one ladder
- 27:33moving down and there were Angels
- 27:35ascending and descending and he felt
- 27:37that at the top of the ladders was
- 27:39Heaven where God
- 27:42lived and he woke that's when he
- 27:45promised to give a
- 27:46tenth of everything he made to God now
- 27:50you see a tithe was never part of the
- 27:52law until Moses this was Jacob's offer
- 27:55of a tenth to bargain with God if you
- 27:58bring me back home safely I'll give you
- 27:59a tithe but you can't bargain with God
- 28:02you can't make a contract with God God
- 28:04makes a covenant with you he had to
- 28:06learn that the hard way
- 28:08later centuries later when Jesus met a
- 28:11man called
- 28:13Nathaniel he said to
- 28:15Nathaniel I saw you sitting under the
- 28:18Fig Tree I noticed
- 28:20you and you're a Jew in whom is no guile
- 28:24no deceit you're an honest Jew
- 28:28and Nathaniel said how did you know
- 28:31that he didn't deny it but he
- 28:35acknowledged that Jesus knew him
- 28:38intimately and Jesus said you think
- 28:40that's
- 28:41wonderful what will you think if you see
- 28:44Angels ascending and descending on the
- 28:46son of
- 28:48man an amazing thing to say isn't it
- 28:51he's saying I'm Jacob's
- 28:53letter I'm the link between Earth and
- 28:56Heaven I'm the new letter
- 28:59do you see Jesus in that instant Jesus
- 29:02did let's go way back to Genesis 3 God
- 29:06made a promise even in the middle of his
- 29:09punishment he said to the serpent that
- 29:12the seed and the word is male the seed
- 29:15of the woman will bruise your
- 29:18head even while you bruise his heel now
- 29:22bruising a heel is not fatal but
- 29:24bruising a head
- 29:26is and that's the very first promise
- 29:29that God would one day deal Satan a
- 29:33fatal
- 29:34blow who was this male seed of Eve who
- 29:37would do that well you know who it was
- 29:41it was the one who bound the strong man
- 29:42and spoiled his Goods let's go further
- 29:45back still to something I mentioned a
- 29:46few talks ago Romans 5 Paul says as one
- 29:51man's Disobedience brought death so one
- 29:55man's
- 29:56obedience brought
- 29:59life he is saying that Jesus is a second
- 30:04Adam and both happened in a garden it
- 30:07was in the Garden of Eden that Adam said
- 30:10I want and it was in The Garden of
- 30:12Gethsemane that Jesus said nevertheless
- 30:15not my will but yours be
- 30:17done there's a contrast here they both
- 30:20began a human race Adam was the first
- 30:24man of homo
- 30:26sapiens Jesus was the first human being
- 30:30of homon
- 30:32noas I was born Homo sapiens I'm now
- 30:37homon
- 30:38Novus the New Testament talks about the
- 30:41new man the new Humanity in fact there
- 30:44are two human races on Earth today you
- 30:48are born Homo sapiens you're born again
- 30:53homonovis you're either in Adam or
- 30:56you're in Christ there's a whole new
- 30:59human race and it's going to inhabit a
- 31:02totally new planet Earth indeed a whole
- 31:05new
- 31:07universe let's go even further I suppose
- 31:10the most remarkable thing of all said
- 31:13about Jesus in the New
- 31:15Testament is that he was responsible for
- 31:18the creation of the
- 31:20universe that a carpenter from Nazareth
- 31:23should ever be attributed with such an
- 31:25amazing achievement but the early
- 31:28disciples came to see that Jesus was
- 31:32involved in Genesis chapter
- 31:341 and that as they later said without
- 31:37him nothing was made that has been made
- 31:41I once had the privilege of speaking at
- 31:43an open air meeting in Canada in a place
- 31:46that had never seen a Christian meeting
- 31:48before right in front of the Niagara
- 31:50Falls now that's a backcloth and it was
- 31:54televised to the whole of Canada and
- 31:56parts of USA there were three speakers I
- 31:59was put on first then a Catholic priest
- 32:01then a Pentecostal Pastor uh I'll tell
- 32:05you what we actually talked about we all
- 32:06talked about
- 32:07honeymoons we hadn't prepared together
- 32:10but actually Niagara is one of the
- 32:11honeymoon capitals of the world all the
- 32:13hotels have Bridal suets around the
- 32:15Falls but that's beside the point when I
- 32:17got up to speak I said I'd like to tell
- 32:21you that I know the man who made the
- 32:23Niagara
- 32:24Falls I said I met him when I was 17
- 32:28and uh we've been friends since well
- 32:31they looked at me sideways as if I was
- 32:33crazy I said his name actually is Jesus
- 32:37and without him nothing was made that
- 32:40has been
- 32:41made so I said he made the Falls I
- 32:45said before he made chairs and tables he
- 32:47made the trees so he'd have some
- 32:50Timber and before he preached The Sermon
- 32:52on the Mount he made the mountain so
- 32:54he'd have a
- 32:56Pulpit now this is in incredible really
- 32:58isn't it that a carpenter from Nazareth
- 33:01should be involved in creating our
- 33:04universe so when you read Genesis 1 do
- 33:07you see Jesus there he's there he's in
- 33:09the US let us make man in our own
- 33:13image you now know we've known for some
- 33:1720 years that we're on an eggshell
- 33:20really on flat plates of rock floating
- 33:22on molten rock and these plates are
- 33:26constantly moving ing against each other
- 33:28causing earthquakes we're in a very
- 33:31delicate position really we're just
- 33:33standing on these plates and when this
- 33:36was discovered and the continental drift
- 33:39whereby the one piece of dry land that
- 33:41we read about in Genesis 1 drifted to
- 33:44become the continents of today the
- 33:46scientists needed to coin a new word for
- 33:50these plates and you know what they
- 33:52called them tectonic
- 33:56plates and do you know what the Greek
- 33:58word tectone means the word from which
- 34:01that adjective was coined tectone means
- 34:06Carpenter now I don't know if they were
- 34:09conscious when they chose that title
- 34:12what a title the whole planet earth on
- 34:15which we live was the result of a
- 34:18carpenter's work from Nazareth and his
- 34:22name is the Lord Jesus
- 34:23Christ well we finish our studies today
- 34:26where we begin we began with creation we
- 34:30finish with Jesus
- 34:32Christ through whom the world came to be
- 34:35and for whom it was made and by whom we
- 34:39discover the answer to our questions for
- 34:42he is called in Genesis in John chapter
- 34:441 he's called the
- 34:46logos the word but it means much more
- 34:50than the word John wrote his gospel in
- 34:53Ephesus and 500 years before John wrote
- 34:56that gospel a man lived in E Ephesus
- 34:58called
- 35:00heroclitus he was the first real
- 35:02scientist and he taught his students to
- 35:05observe and study what went on in animal
- 35:09life in in the in the weather and he
- 35:12said everything You observe you must
- 35:14find out the reason why it behaves like
- 35:18it
- 35:20does but the reason why in Greek is
- 35:26logos and that's become the title of
- 35:29every branch of
- 35:31science ology means the reason why
- 35:35biology is the reason why life behaves
- 35:38as it does zoology the reason why
- 35:40animals behave psychology psychology the
- 35:42reasons why our minds behave as they do
- 35:44sociology the reason why groups behave
- 35:47as they do meteorology the reason why
- 35:49the weather behaves as it does but every
- 35:51branch of science only looks at the
- 35:53reason why part of our universe behaves
- 35:56like it does
- 35:58nobody seems to be interested in the
- 36:00reason why it's all
- 36:02here and the answer is Jesus is the
- 36:05reason why he is the logos of the whole
- 36:10universe it was made for him and through
- 36:13him and by him and to him be all praise
- 36:17and honor and glory and power forever
- 36:20and ever amen
