Full transcript
- 0:02it's the story of how God was seeking a
- 0:06bride for his son each book is different
- 0:09from every other book I'm trying to give
- 0:11you the keys for you to unlock it for
- 0:15[Music]
- 0:27yourself 10 years after Amos preached in
- 0:31betel or bethl another Prophet came who
- 0:35was to be God's last prophet to the
- 0:37northern 10 tribes of Israel God's last
- 0:40word his last warning his last appeal
- 0:44and it is as I already indicated a real
- 0:47contrast to amos's prophecy it's
- 0:50affection rather than accusation it's
- 0:54wooing rather than warning tender rather
- 0:57than tough Mercy rather than Justice
- 1:00and this is God's final final appeal
- 1:03before the 10 tribes
- 1:06disappeared so we pay very careful
- 1:08attention to it and there is a key word
- 1:11which unlocks the whole prophecy in
- 1:14Hebrews in Hebrew c h s e
- 1:20dth you pronounce the CH like the Scots
- 1:23pronounce
- 1:25l and this word is there is no exact
- 1:29English equival
- 1:30you see we don't have the Bible we have
- 1:32a translation of the
- 1:34Bible and that has certain limits and
- 1:38there are never quite the exact word
- 1:41equivalents to this worded in the Old
- 1:44Testament or Agape in the New Testament
- 1:47there isn't really an English word that
- 1:49communicates these unusual but very
- 1:52beautiful words let me try and fill it
- 1:54full of meaning it is essentially a
- 1:56covenant word it's not um it's not
- 2:00something you have for everybody it's
- 2:02something you have for those with whom
- 2:04you have a covenant
- 2:05relationship and the most common
- 2:07Covenant relationship we have is
- 2:09marriage but there are other Covenant
- 2:12relationships which are
- 2:14mutually uh
- 2:16committed so that there's a commitment
- 2:19in this word it does mean love but it
- 2:22has an awful lot of the word loyalty in
- 2:25it and true love is not true love unless
- 2:28it is loyal the the other synonyms that
- 2:31are used in the Old Testament for it are
- 2:33loving
- 2:34kindness or faithfulness even
- 2:38faithfulness is used 60 times for this
- 2:40word in our English Bible kindness is
- 2:43used about nine or 10 times it means
- 2:46unswerving love undying
- 2:49devotion it means to be so committed to
- 2:52someone you go on loving them whatever
- 2:54happens there is an Old English word
- 2:57that used to be used but is not now
- 3:00called
- 3:01tro t r o t h the only
- 3:07surviving example of that word is
- 3:10betrothed there's a commitment in it
- 3:13there's a loyalty in it and it may be
- 3:16very significant that that word has died
- 3:18because that kind of loyalty has died
- 3:21and love is something without loyalty
- 3:23now something you can enjoy for a bit
- 3:25with someone and then drop that's not
- 3:28CID that's not Covenant love the
- 3:31opposite of this word is
- 3:34unfaithfulness so in the marriage
- 3:36service not in the registry office but
- 3:38in a church marriage service there are
- 3:40usually words like keep thee only unto
- 3:43her or only unto him as long as you both
- 3:45shall live that's kth for better for
- 3:50worse for richer for poorer doesn't
- 3:53matter that's irrelevant to the
- 3:56commitment now the whole relationship
- 3:59between God God and Israel is a covenant
- 4:02love and therefore
- 4:05ath stay with it there was a man in the
- 4:08north of England whose wife shortly
- 4:10after their marriage left him and lived
- 4:13a pretty sinful life picked up disease
- 4:16and
- 4:18uh the friend of this husband said to
- 4:21him why don't you divorce her she
- 4:22doesn't care that much for you never
- 4:25work out and he said never speak to me
- 4:28like that about my wife I love her and I
- 4:31will love her as long as there's breath
- 4:32in her body and when she Lay Dying of
- 4:36the disease she' picked up from a sinful
- 4:38life his hands were held over her in
- 4:41prayer and he nursed her that's
- 4:44cth that's God's
- 4:47love that's what Hosea had to
- 4:49communicate to these people who didn't
- 4:52care about God's love at all so on
- 4:56Israel's side the Covenant meant loyalty
- 4:59to to his
- 5:00commands obedience that was their part
- 5:03of the Covenant his part was to look
- 5:05after them and to protect them and
- 5:06provide for them but their part was to
- 5:09obey him but what he was looking for was
- 5:12glad eager obedience that wanted to live
- 5:16the way he wanted her to live but that's
- 5:19what he didn't get there is a group of
- 5:21Jews
- 5:22today who find Delight in God's law
- 5:27they're the happiest group of Jews I
- 5:28know and very interesting what they
- 5:30called they called the
- 5:32hassidim spelled c h a s a d i
- 5:38Am and that's made up
- 5:42of those who Delight in God's law those
- 5:45who are happy to obey it not who do it
- 5:49grudgingly as a duty but who see it as a
- 5:52delight the longest Psalm in the Bible
- 5:54Psalm 119 is all about someone who
- 5:57Delights in God's law says it's great to
- 6:01have
- 6:02this well that's quite an attitude isn't
- 6:04it the burden of hosea's message is very
- 6:06simple what's happened to our marriage
- 6:09says the
- 6:11Lord what's happened to our
- 6:14marriage there is still HTH on my
- 6:18side but there's none on your side now
- 6:22what went wrong simple message and it's
- 6:26torn out of the pain of unrequited love
- 6:30that is perhaps the most painful
- 6:32experience in the world to love someone
- 6:35and not have that love
- 6:36returned to want to love them and help
- 6:40them and they won't have
- 6:43it and I think maybe some of you have
- 6:46known that pain of UNR returned
- 6:49love well how could Hosea understand
- 6:54God's feelings so
- 6:56well the answer is God taught him in the
- 6:59school of
- 7:00experience whose colors are black and
- 7:03blue God often prepared a prophets
- 7:06through his marriage and gave him a
- 7:08personal experience of the feelings of
- 7:11God for example Jeremiah God told
- 7:14Jeremiah you must not marry you must
- 7:17remain a bachelor because you have to
- 7:19tell Israel that God is now a bachelor
- 7:22he doesn't have a wife
- 7:24anymore and so Jeremiah had to learn
- 7:28from the loneliness
- 7:30of not having a wife how God was
- 7:32feeling without Israel and that became
- 7:35his message or take Ezekiel and we shall
- 7:38be looking at him shortly Ezekiel was
- 7:41told your wife is going to die and you
- 7:45must not
- 7:48weep and through that experience Ezekiel
- 7:51was to tell Israel God has been bered of
- 7:54his
- 7:55wife but Hosea had the most
- 7:57extraordinary
- 7:59instruction in God through an experience
- 8:02of marriage I shared it with you when we
- 8:04looked at the song of songs but let me
- 8:07run through it again it's all in
- 8:08chapters 1 to3 which are
- 8:12autobiographical and various expositions
- 8:14of Hosea have been given interesting
- 8:16titles I've got two books on my shelf
- 8:19one is called the prophet and The
- 8:21Prostitute and the other is called love
- 8:23to the Loveless which is a little phrase
- 8:26out of a hymn but both those sum up
- 8:29perfectly what happened to this man
- 8:31again Scholars argue as to whether it's
- 8:34fact or fiction whether the order of
- 8:37events is right whether chapter 3 didn't
- 8:39come before chapter 1 whether Hosea knew
- 8:44what was happening beforehand or only
- 8:46realized afterwards what was happening
- 8:48all these things are matters of
- 8:50discussion and frankly you can get
- 8:52really bogged down in what I think is
- 8:55speculation let's take it in its
- 8:57plainest simplest meaning he married a
- 9:00prostitute they had three children at
- 9:03least one of whom was not his and was
- 9:06somebody else's she went back onto the
- 9:09streets he had to go and find her he
- 9:11brought her home put her through a
- 9:14period of discipline when he didn't know
- 9:16her as wife and then courted her and
- 9:18started all over again and loved her
- 9:21those are the facts and the names of the
- 9:23children are very interesting there were
- 9:26three the first was called jezrael or
- 9:30jezrael which means god SWS it and the
- 9:34biggest problem he had with that child
- 9:36was
- 9:37discipline a very rebellious unruly
- 9:40child that had to be disciplined the
- 9:43second child which was a girl the first
- 9:46was a boy the second child was a girl
- 9:48and that child was called Lor ruama
- 9:51which means not
- 9:53pied and that child was a deprived
- 9:57child didn't have love from the mother
- 10:01and that was the problem with the second
- 10:03child the third child was called Lo Ami
- 10:08which means not my people this was the
- 10:11child that Hosea didn't father she
- 10:14already had another man and this child
- 10:17was
- 10:18disowned and those three adjectives I've
- 10:21given you discipline deprived
- 10:24disowned all summarize how God was
- 10:28dealing with his people Israel
- 10:30the names of the children were so
- 10:33important I haven't met any Christian
- 10:35parents who used any of those three
- 10:36names for their
- 10:38children and certainly not when we get
- 10:40to Isaiah Mah shalal
- 10:43hashad I've never known a Christian
- 10:45coule we love Bible names for our
- 10:46children but not these names that's all
- 10:50in chapter one about the three children
- 10:52chapter two is about the
- 10:53wife it's very interesting there are
- 10:56three things about
- 10:58her but she was reproached by her own
- 11:01children for what she was
- 11:03doing her own children said you
- 11:05shouldn't be doing that
- 11:07Mommy so even the children could see
- 11:10what was going wrong and she was
- 11:13punished she was requited for her
- 11:17behavior but she was restored
- 11:20later those was the three hours for her
- 11:23reproached requited restored chapter 3
- 11:26is all about the husband
- 11:29and uh there were three things told us
- 11:31about him in chapter 3 that's Hosea
- 11:33first that he was faithful to
- 11:35her even when she was faithless to him
- 11:39he was faithful to her went looking for
- 11:41her after she left him with the children
- 11:45secondly he was firm with
- 11:47her and for a period he did not treat
- 11:51her as his wife he brought her
- 11:53home but didn't share the bed with her
- 11:57for a period and and that was
- 12:00representative of the period of
- 12:02discipline in the Exile that God was
- 12:03going to put the Jews through before He
- 12:06restored her and then
- 12:09thirdly he was feared there was a
- 12:13healthy fear in the wife afterwards so
- 12:17she
- 12:18trembled she feared
- 12:20him and that was not a phobia not a
- 12:24terror but it was a healthy fear that
- 12:26she had which would uh bring respect and
- 12:30loyalty back into her life well now
- 12:33those are chapters 1 to three purely the
- 12:36story from then on chapters four to the
- 12:39end were into the message that grew out
- 12:40of that because God was able to say now
- 12:43Hosea you've got your message now you're
- 12:47ready to go and tell Israel that's how I
- 12:49feel about
- 12:51her and so we can summarize the message
- 12:55of Hosea again it's made up of different
- 12:58sermons he preached different prophecies
- 13:00he gave all jumbled together so it's not
- 13:02easy to analyze it nevertheless we can
- 13:06put it together under various headings
- 13:09which give us the bones of it as it were
- 13:12and enable us to read it with
- 13:14understanding everything he says centers
- 13:17around these two headings human
- 13:20unfaithfulness and divine
- 13:23faithfulness it is the contrast between
- 13:26this
- 13:27HTH and the very opposite in the people
- 13:31that forms the theme of his whole
- 13:34prophecy God's controversy with Israel
- 13:38is this his compassion for them comes
- 13:40out in this those are the two words that
- 13:43Hosea uses God's God has a controversy
- 13:46with Israel but he has compassion for
- 13:49them this is God's problem what do you
- 13:52do with a people that you love but who
- 13:54are unfaithful to you it's a real
- 13:57problem so we have a mixture of divine
- 14:00Justice and and divine mercy again but
- 14:03the emphasis is going to be down here
- 14:06however let's look at all this up here
- 14:08this doesn't represent the amount of his
- 14:11prophecy it's just that this side is
- 14:13more detailed than this first of all he
- 14:16does concentrate on seven
- 14:19sins of which they are really guilty we
- 14:22can call them the seven deadly sins of
- 14:24Israel and show God's detailed knowledge
- 14:28of what is going going on number one
- 14:32infidelity they have become Unfaithful
- 14:34in their marriages as well as unfaithful
- 14:37to God and that invariably
- 14:40follows they are guilty of
- 14:42harlotry they're going after other gods
- 14:45like hosea's wife went after other men
- 14:49secondly they are guilty of
- 14:51Independence God's chosen government was
- 14:55in
- 14:57Jerusalem but they had created ated
- 14:59their own Royal Line they had set up
- 15:02their own independent Kingdom which is
- 15:04the essence of sin we will not have you
- 15:07to rule over us we will have our own
- 15:09kingdom and they were in Rebellion
- 15:12against God's chosen King in the South
- 15:16so Independence was a major sin
- 15:19Intrigue there were lies and deceit and
- 15:22people were making
- 15:24treaties outside the people of God
- 15:27getting unequally yolked with unbelief
- 15:29Believers but there was a whole lot of
- 15:32conspiracy people talking behind each
- 15:34other's backs people going behind each
- 15:37other and making secret agreements a lot
- 15:39of
- 15:40intrigue fourthly idolatry this golden
- 15:43calf of Samaria figures
- 15:45large in hosea's Prophecy the bull was a
- 15:50symbol of fertility still
- 15:54is next
- 15:56ignorance that when they should have
- 15:58known about God they didn't they
- 16:00couldn't be bothered to read their
- 16:03Bibles they didn't want to know about
- 16:06God I feel that's happening in our
- 16:08country you know we've had Christianity
- 16:11here for nearly 2,000 years and people
- 16:14don't want to
- 16:15know soon as a religious program comes
- 16:19on TV thousands of sets switch off and
- 16:23you can see how they're fighting to keep
- 16:26religious interest on TV so often Often
- 16:29by cheapening it I feel but there's a
- 16:31very interesting little good program on
- 16:34Sunday morning called the good book
- 16:36guide I hope you've seen some of that is
- 16:38the Bible is being presented in a very
- 16:40popular way but by someone who is
- 16:43breaking the Commandments of God who's
- 16:46living with a woman who's not married to
- 16:48he's the one presenting the Bible to the
- 16:51nation what a crazy mixup World we're in
- 16:55when you can choose a man living in
- 16:58adultery
- 16:59or fornication rather in God's sight
- 17:02who's chosen to present the word of God
- 17:04to people but you see it's very
- 17:07reminiscent of all this idolatry
- 17:10ignorance immorality
- 17:13drunkenness was rif promiscuity and
- 17:16violence those are the three things that
- 17:19Hosea picks out which was making it less
- 17:22and less safe for people to walk the
- 17:24streets at night in Israel
- 17:29and finally above all in
- 17:32gratitude I redeemed you and you're so
- 17:36ungrateful there's no thanks in
- 17:39you and in a series of
- 17:42pictures which would really stick in
- 17:45their minds he says you like mixed dough
- 17:49that's when you mix flour with olive oil
- 17:51just for cooking it but if you leave it
- 17:54and you don't cook it it goes Rd and
- 17:57it's horrible he said that's what what
- 17:59you're like he says you're like a heated
- 18:02oven your passions like a heated oven he
- 18:05says you're like an unturned cake that's
- 18:08getting all burnt on one side and is
- 18:09uncooked on the other because they used
- 18:12to cook the cakes on the top of an iron
- 18:13sheet on the fire like a
- 18:16griddle he said you're like a fluttering
- 18:18Dove trapped in a
- 18:20net Vivid picture
- 18:22language but then he accuses the four
- 18:26groups of people responsible for this
- 18:28condition
- 18:29he says the priests are the first ones
- 18:32responsible they should know God and
- 18:35they don't they should be telling the
- 18:36people about God and they don't he said
- 18:39the prophets there were plenty of
- 18:41prophets in the northern part of Israel
- 18:43but they were all false prophets telling
- 18:46people not to worry that God wouldn't do
- 18:49these Dreadful things that's what the
- 18:50people wanted to hear and a false
- 18:52prophet always says peace peace when
- 18:54there is no peace see false prophets say
- 18:57don't worry it may never happen that's a
- 18:59false prophecy there were plenty of
- 19:01prophets saying thus sayth the Lord but
- 19:04just telling the people what the people
- 19:05wanted to hear and I know I had to
- 19:07battle with this I think the battle's
- 19:09over for me largely now but you got to
- 19:11be on your guard all the time it is so
- 19:13easy for preachers to tell people what
- 19:15they want to
- 19:16hear to want people to say what a nice
- 19:19sermon thank you so
- 19:21much but God needs men who will tell the
- 19:23people what they don't want to hear see
- 19:27and it's costly to do that
- 19:29there were plenty of prophets who are
- 19:31giving them what they wanted to hear the
- 19:34princes this Royal Line they set up they
- 19:37also were responsible and the other
- 19:40group that he singles out for particular
- 19:43condemnation are the
- 19:45propers who were making money out of
- 19:48real
- 19:49estate and who were making money at the
- 19:53loss of other people who were
- 19:55poorer that's happening today
- 19:58I think it's very doubtful if a
- 20:01Christian can be in money
- 20:03exchange shifting Millions around with
- 20:07the turns of the market it is the poor
- 20:10who lose out every time it's at the
- 20:12expense of the third world every time in
- 20:15other words when we gain money there
- 20:17should be a fair exchange of goods or
- 20:20services in
- 20:22value so that both gain but in fact
- 20:25there's an awful lot of gain going on
- 20:28that is purely at others losses and they
- 20:31don't get anything in return making
- 20:34money making money as it were I just
- 20:36throw that out this was what was
- 20:38happening here and josea singles them
- 20:40out as the corruptors of
- 20:43society now he says suffering is coming
- 20:46to
- 20:46you and he says three particular sorts
- 20:50will come first of all
- 20:53barrenness there'd be
- 20:56miscarriages women would not even
- 20:58conceive they'd lose their
- 21:00babies that's pretty tough that God can
- 21:03do
- 21:04that and then he said Bloodshed will
- 21:07come loss of
- 21:09life
- 21:11attacks but ultimately the same as Amos
- 21:15banishment from your land now that's the
- 21:18sever side of hea's Prophecy but it's
- 21:21not his main thrust his main thrust is
- 21:24that God is still
- 21:26faithful there's a statement in the New
- 21:29Testament uh about our relationship to
- 21:31Jesus it's in Timothy and it says if we
- 21:34deny him or if we disown him he will
- 21:37disown us but if we are faithless to him
- 21:41he remains
- 21:43faithful that might have been lifted
- 21:45straight out of Hose well let's look at
- 21:47this last bit here's the good news his
- 21:49compassion for them unlike Amos except
- 21:53for amos's very final message this is
- 21:56the real heart of hosea's word and it's
- 21:59when I read these passages that uh I am
- 22:04deeply moved by God's faithfulness I use
- 22:08the three letters of the word god g o d
- 22:11not quite in the right
- 22:12order uh I'm taking them in the order in
- 22:15which Hosea takes him God's love for you
- 22:18cannot let you
- 22:19off cannot let you go and cannot let you
- 22:23down let me read some verses to
- 22:26you first of all about
- 22:29God hanging on to them sorry about God
- 22:32punishing
- 22:33them you see God can't stand their
- 22:36professions of repentance and God says I
- 22:39will tear Ephraim and Judah as a lion
- 22:42rips apart its prey I will carry them
- 22:44off and Chase all Rescuers away I will
- 22:47abandon them and return to my home until
- 22:50they admit their guilt and look to me
- 22:53for help again because as soon as
- 22:55Trouble Comes they say come let us
- 22:58return to the Lord it is he who has torn
- 23:00us he will heal us he has wounded he
- 23:03will bind us up in just a couple of days
- 23:05or three at the most he will set us on
- 23:07our feet again to live in his kindness
- 23:10oh that we might know the Lord let us
- 23:13press on to know him and he will respond
- 23:15to us as surely as the coming of dawn or
- 23:17the rain of early
- 23:19spring I've read that in a sarcastic
- 23:21tone of voice because that's how it
- 23:23should be read this is God saying that's
- 23:25the kind of thing you say oh ephra aan
- 23:29Judah what shall I do with
- 23:32you for your love vanishes like morning
- 23:36clouds and disappears like Dee I sent my
- 23:40prophets to warn you of your doom I've
- 23:43slain you with the words of my mouth
- 23:44threatening you with
- 23:46death I don't want your
- 23:49sacrifices I want your
- 23:52love I don't want your
- 23:55offerings I want you to know me
- 23:59can you feel God's heart in that that's
- 24:02the love that cannot let them off he's
- 24:05got to punish them but now listen to
- 24:07this when Israel was a child I loved him
- 24:10as a son and brought him up out of Egypt
- 24:13but the more I called to him the more he
- 24:15rebelled sacrificing to Bal and burning
- 24:18incense to Idols I trained him from
- 24:21intimacy infancy I taught him how to
- 24:24walk I held him in my arms but he
- 24:26doesn't know or even care that it was I
- 24:32who raised him
- 24:34up oh how can I give you up my
- 24:38Ephraim how can I let you go my heart
- 24:42cries out within me how I long to help
- 24:45you no I will not punish you as much as
- 24:48my Fierce anger tells me to for I am God
- 24:53and not man I am the Holy One living
- 24:57among you and I didn't come to
- 25:02destroy sense that you can't read this
- 25:05without emotion and here's his final
- 25:08appeal oh
- 25:10Israel return to the Lord your God for
- 25:13you have been crushed by your sins bring
- 25:16your petition come to the Lord and say
- 25:19oh Lord take away our
- 25:22sins that's the kind of prayer he wanted
- 25:24not the prayer oh he'll get us out of
- 25:27trouble but oh Lord take away our sins
- 25:30plenty of people cry to God when they're
- 25:32in
- 25:33trouble they don't ask him to take away
- 25:35the cause of the trouble see be gracious
- 25:40to us oh Lord in you alone the
- 25:43fatherless find
- 25:46Mercy then I will cure you of idolatry
- 25:51and
- 25:52faithlessness and my love will know no
- 25:56bounds or eort IM stay away from
- 26:01Idols I am living and strong I look
- 26:05after you and I care for you I'm like an
- 26:08evergreen tree yielding my fruit for you
- 26:11throughout the year my mercies never
- 26:17fail then it finishes with a
- 26:20statement whoever is wise let him
- 26:23understand these
- 26:25things and whoever is intelligent let
- 26:28him listen for the paths of the Lord are
- 26:31true and right and good men walk along
- 26:35them but Sinners trying it will
- 26:41fail that's one of the strongest appeals
- 26:44that is in the whole of the Bible to
- 26:47people who don't want to know about
- 26:50God's
- 26:51love so let's just look finally at the
- 26:54application of this how do we apply AAR
- 26:58and Hosea
- 27:00today there is one huge difference
- 27:02between our situation and that to which
- 27:05they spoke and prophesied and we need to
- 27:08think this through very
- 27:10carefully in Israel the church and the
- 27:14state were one and the same
- 27:17thing it's what we call a
- 27:20theocracy and to be born into the state
- 27:23was to be born into the church and vice
- 27:25versa it was one and the same thing the
- 27:27people of God were the same as the
- 27:30state that does not apply in the New
- 27:34Testament in the New Testament church
- 27:37and state are
- 27:39separated and that may be summed up by
- 27:41Jesus words render to Caesar the things
- 27:44that are Caesars and to God the things
- 27:46that are gods and so in a sense we now
- 27:50live in two kingdoms I'm a citizen of
- 27:53the United Kingdom according to my
- 27:55passport I'm also a citizen of the
- 27:57kingdom of God they are not one and the
- 27:59same thing therefore we have to be
- 28:02rather careful applying Prophecies of
- 28:06the Old Testament to a secular state
- 28:10today do you understand what I'm
- 28:13saying now we suffer from the
- 28:15complication of the fact that since the
- 28:18emperor
- 28:19Constantine Europe has tried to combine
- 28:23church and state tried to create
- 28:26Christendom in which which the kingdom
- 28:28of God and the kingdoms of men are one
- 28:30and the same
- 28:31thing uh so that to be born into England
- 28:35is to be born into the
- 28:36church and we have centuries of an
- 28:40established Christianity behind us
- 28:44actually that may well probably cease in
- 28:47the near
- 28:48future uh the longest word in the
- 28:50English language is back on the agenda
- 28:52anti-
- 28:54disestablishmentarianism and we may well
- 28:56see the separation of church and state
- 29:00in the next 10 20 years could easily
- 29:03happen and then we would be back in a
- 29:05more New Testament
- 29:08position now when therefore we see these
- 29:11prophecies which Amos and JIA applied to
- 29:14both church and state
- 29:16together we can't just take that and
- 29:18throw it at our
- 29:20government that's rather important the
- 29:24pattern I believe is this what God Said
- 29:27through through these people to the nonp
- 29:30people of God can be used as a prophecy
- 29:34to the
- 29:35government do you follow me the
- 29:38inhumanity the riding rough shot over
- 29:40human rights the legislation that makes
- 29:43the rich richer and the poor poorer
- 29:45there are a whole lot of things in there
- 29:47that we can apply validly but we must
- 29:51not expect the government to try and
- 29:54make people Christian by
- 29:56law God has has higher standards for his
- 29:59people than he has for
- 30:03others and it's a delicate line I think
- 30:06the Sunday trading issue is a classic
- 30:08case in
- 30:08point uh we can agitate for keeping
- 30:13Sunday special on a humanitarian basis
- 30:16but not on a sabari basis do you follow
- 30:20me in this and so when we read these
- 30:23prophecies I'm afraid some people are
- 30:25too eager to take all of amos's warning
- 30:28and throw them at John Major I think you
- 30:30got to be careful about doing that he's
- 30:32not a believer in stanle and at the
- 30:34moment we have a very great shortage of
- 30:37Christian
- 30:38leaders uh but we shouldn't try and
- 30:40expect them to establish Christian
- 30:44standards but there are moral standards
- 30:47which are known to the conscience of
- 30:48humanity which we can expect and can
- 30:51agitate
- 30:52for so I'm I'm just saying this in other
- 30:56words these prophecies or
- 30:58primarily to be applied to the
- 31:02church and that's where our Prime
- 31:05prophetic message should be I fear that
- 31:08it's much easier for Christians to point
- 31:10out to the world and say what Wicked
- 31:11people you all
- 31:13are very easy to do that but in fact I
- 31:17believe that the prophetic word is more
- 31:19needed inside the church than outside
- 31:22right now and that if the church were
- 31:25what it ought to be that would begin to
- 31:28clean the nation up but I'm afraid we're
- 31:31getting known as a church that's all
- 31:32muddled up inside and trying to put
- 31:35everybody outside
- 31:36right well be careful when we read
- 31:39prophecies we do see an amazing
- 31:42reflection of our
- 31:44society out there but judgment begins at
- 31:47the house of God and we got to put these
- 31:50things right inside before we start
- 31:53trying to tell the world and frankly
- 31:56it's ridiculous to be telling the world
- 31:58to read the
- 31:59Bible by a man who's not even living by
- 32:01it
- 32:02himself see that's where the world sees
- 32:04the hypocrisy of the whole thing and
- 32:07they see through it and when that
- 32:09knowledge is common as it was in the
- 32:11papers last week world says ridiculous
- 32:15and they despise a people of God who
- 32:17don't practice what they preach so let
- 32:21us when we read the prophecies apply
- 32:23them to the people of God
- 32:25first and get our own house in order
- 32:28then we are in a
- 32:30position to say to
- 32:32society God condemns you for your
- 32:35inhumanity for your
- 32:38insensitivity to human beings created in
- 32:40His image that's just a word I felt I
- 32:43ought to
- 32:45add I think Graham Kendrick's best song
- 32:49of all and the most prophetic is written
- 32:52and thank God for a hym writer today we
- 32:55got plenty of chorus writers he's
- 32:57writing some
- 32:58contentful hymns but I think his most
- 33:01prophetic and his best hymn begins oh
- 33:04Lord the clouds are gathering do you
- 33:06know that
- 33:07song It's a song for the people of God
- 33:11and that song reminds me very much of
- 33:13amamos who says away with the noise of
- 33:17your songs I will not listen to your
- 33:20music but let Justice roll on like a
- 33:25river and righteousness like like a
- 33:28never failing stream it's too easy to
- 33:31throw that at the world let Justice and
- 33:33righteousness flow like a river inside
- 33:35the church among the people of God
- 33:39that's where it must begin and we need
- 33:41prophets and thank God for Amos and
- 33:44josea who went to a foreign land to them
- 33:48where they would not be acceptable and
- 33:51they preach the truth fearlessly and
- 33:56lovingly amen
