- 0:02it's the story of how God was seeking a
- 0:06bride for his son each book is different
- 0:09from every other book I'm trying to give
- 0:11you the keys for you to unlock it for
- 0:15[Music]
- 0:26yourself well we've got as far as
- 0:29chapter two and we've got 5050 or 48
- 0:32more to go so let's uh look in detail at
- 0:36chapter 2 there's a radical shift in
- 0:39style in content above all in Viewpoint
- 0:42when you read chapter 1 and close your
- 0:44eyes you feel yourself hovering just
- 0:47above the Earth but when you read
- 0:50chapter 2 and close your eyes you feel
- 0:52you're standing firmly on the ground and
- 0:55looking around instead of looking
- 0:57down that's because in chapter two man
- 1:01has become the center of the picture in
- 1:03chapter one God is the center and
- 1:05everything is from his angle his point
- 1:07of view but in Chapter 2 man is right at
- 1:11the center of the picture and man is now
- 1:14an
- 1:15individual in fact the generic terms of
- 1:18chapter 1 give way to specific names in
- 1:22Chapter 2 in chapter one the human race
- 1:25is simply male and female in Chapter 2
- 1:29male and female has become Adam and Eve
- 1:31two particular individuals God himself
- 1:35has a name now in Chapter 2 in chapter
- 1:38one he is simply God but now in your
- 1:41English Bibles it says he is the Lord
- 1:43God but when you read the word Lord in
- 1:46capital letters in your English Bibles
- 1:49that means that in the Hebrew his name
- 1:51is there and in the Hebrew since they
- 1:54don't have vowels his name is made up of
- 1:57four consonants j h
- 2:00VH from which the word Jehovah has been
- 2:04coined but that's a mistake because J is
- 2:07pronounced like a y and V is pronounced
- 2:10like a w so in English pronunciation it
- 2:14would be y
- 2:16HWH from which we get the word Yahweh in
- 2:20the New Jerusalem bible that uh word is
- 2:24there just as it is the Yahweh God I've
- 2:29already given you the English word
- 2:31always as being very near to that
- 2:34participle of the verb to be being
- 2:37always that's the
- 2:39name so God now has a name man now has a
- 2:44name and later in the chapter woman has
- 2:46a name there are names here not just
- 2:49names of persons but names of places no
- 2:52longer are we talking about the dry land
- 2:55we're talking about the land of havila
- 2:57and the land of kush and the land of of
- 3:00Asher and the Garden of Eden and not
- 3:03only have has the dry land now got names
- 3:06but the water has names and there are
- 3:09four rivers mentioned here of which we
- 3:11are familiar with two today tigis and
- 3:14Euphrates that puts the Garden of Eden
- 3:17somewhere near uh East Northeastern
- 3:20turkey or Armenia somewhere in there
- 3:24actually where the Mount Ararat still is
- 3:27where people incidentally are still
- 3:28looking for Noah's Ark
- 3:30so that locates us but the significance
- 3:33of the names is greater than that it's
- 3:36not just making things particular names
- 3:39make relationships possible and the big
- 3:43thing that happens in Genesis 2 is that
- 3:46man is seen at the center of a network
- 3:49of
- 3:50relationships and the meaning of life
- 3:53for us is in
- 3:55relationship and these relationships as
- 3:57we're going to see have three dimensions
- 4:00the relationship above
- 4:03us the relationship to those and things
- 4:06below us and the relationships that we
- 4:09have
- 4:10alongside so there's a vertical
- 4:12relationship to the God above a vertical
- 4:15relationship to Nature below and a
- 4:18horizontal n relationship with human
- 4:21nature in other people and ourselves but
- 4:23before we come to that let's notice one
- 4:26or two more
- 4:27things in chapter 1
- 4:30God is simply described as God Elohim
- 4:33which means three and yet three in one
- 4:36with singular verbs as we saw and a God
- 4:39who is like men because man is made like
- 4:43God that's a very important insight
- 4:46there is an affinity between human
- 4:48beings and God that is lacking in every
- 4:51other part of God's creation there is no
- 4:54animal that has this you never saw a
- 4:57chimpanzee prey there is something in us
- 5:01that is quite different from every other
- 5:03creature on earth and that something is
- 5:06that we are like the Creator in a unique
- 5:09way in Genesis 2 there seems to be a
- 5:13change to the difference between God and
- 5:15man that we he is unlike us and we are
- 5:18unlike him and we need to balance these
- 5:20two facts we are like God yet not like
- 5:24him he is like us and yet not like us
- 5:28and we need to keep that balance in
- 5:30order to have a good relationship with
- 5:32him the fact that he's like us means
- 5:35that our relationship with him can be
- 5:37intimate but the fact that he's unlike
- 5:40us will keep the relationship
- 5:43reverent and this balance between
- 5:45intimacy and reverence is terribly
- 5:48important especially in our worship you
- 5:52can become too familiar with God or to p
- 5:55with God as if he's just one of the
- 5:58congregation or you you can become too
- 6:01Ed by him and almost shrink into
- 6:05yourself and not be able to call him
- 6:07father he is Holy Father in Heaven he's
- 6:11like us and unlike us we are like him
- 6:13and unlike him and we need to keep that
- 6:16in balance and the first two chapters
- 6:18help us to do that the name Adam means
- 6:24Dusty because that signifies what uh
- 6:27material God used to make the first man
- 6:30so he's called Dusty and his wife is
- 6:32called Lively or Eve to you but they are
- 6:36descriptive names and names in the Bible
- 6:40are invariably
- 6:42descriptive even
- 6:45onomic meaning that the name sounds like
- 6:47the sound of the thing like the word
- 6:50cucko that's an onom matate word in fact
- 6:53when man named the animals as God told
- 6:57him to he used descript of the animals
- 7:00and that became its
- 7:02name names in the Bible are not only
- 7:06descriptive they carry Authority in them
- 7:10in other words the person who gives the
- 7:12name has
- 7:14authority over the person who receives
- 7:16the name so Adam names all the animals
- 7:21signifying his authority over them un
- 7:24incidentally he names his wife which uh
- 7:28still applies to weddings when a wife
- 7:30takes the husband's name that has
- 7:33profound implications so names are
- 7:35important and with Genesis 2 were right
- 7:38into names of One sort or
- 7:41another now look at the three dimensions
- 7:43of Human Relationships the first is the
- 7:46relationship we have to the the other
- 7:49creatures God has made and the
- 7:52relationship is one of subduing them God
- 7:55gave us the animals to serve us that
- 7:59does not mean that we have a license to
- 8:01be cruel or a license to obliterate them
- 8:05make them
- 8:06extinct but nevertheless it does mean
- 8:09that animals are further down the scale
- 8:11of value than human beings that's
- 8:14important especially in these days when
- 8:16there is total confusion I remember
- 8:19seeing a few women in Australia on a
- 8:22March of protest against the killing of
- 8:25baby seals and I know that those same
- 8:28women would not hesitate to have an
- 8:30abortion we live in a crazy world where
- 8:33a baby seal is considered of more value
- 8:36than a human being Jesus was willing to
- 8:39sacrifice 2,000 pigs in order to save
- 8:43one man's sanity and restore him to his
- 8:46family we need to get a sense of
- 8:47proportion that doesn't mean we've got
- 8:49to treat animals as if they have no
- 8:51feelings but it does mean that uh there
- 8:54is a scale of values and the creatures
- 8:57are put under man to serve men later we
- 9:01shall see after the flood to provide
- 9:03food for men and uh God canel the
- 9:08vegetarianism of creation After the
- 9:11flood you remember reading that in
- 9:14Genesis uh one and two God
- 9:18gave man a vegetarian diet of fruit and
- 9:22seed and gave the uh well made the
- 9:25animals herbivores rather than
- 9:27carnivores that's uh a sign ific thing
- 9:30too so in relation to Nature below us we
- 9:34are to have dominion over nature and
- 9:36Rule nature and therefore affect
- 9:39it we're to cultivate nature and control
- 9:43it it's interesting that man needs an
- 9:46environment that is both utilitarian and
- 9:50aesthetic both useful and beautiful and
- 9:54God did not put man in the wilderness he
- 9:56planted a garden for him that had
- 9:59aesthetic as well as utilitarian value
- 10:02much as old Cottage Gardens in England
- 10:05were a mixture of pansies and
- 10:08potatoes uh the useful and the Beautiful
- 10:10alongside each other man needs more than
- 10:14utility he needs more than food he needs
- 10:16Beauty around
- 10:17him because he has that within him which
- 10:20appreciates Beauty I never saw a dog
- 10:23gazing at a Sunset and saying isn't that
- 10:25marvelous there is that within us like
- 10:28God which needs more than mere existence
- 10:32we need to appreciate and enjoy things
- 10:36and not just
- 10:39survive well now the second relationship
- 10:42we have is to God
- 10:43above and those two trees in the garden
- 10:46are very important one made you live
- 10:49longer and one made you live
- 10:51shorter those two trees are not uh
- 10:55magical trees they are what I would call
- 10:57sacramental trees God can appoint
- 11:01physical channels to communicate
- 11:03spiritual blessings or curses to us
- 11:07that's why taking Bread and Wine wrongly
- 11:09in the Lord's Supper can lead you to be
- 11:11sick and even
- 11:12die it's because God they're not magical
- 11:15The Bread and Wine but God has appointed
- 11:18those physical channels of his grace and
- 11:22of his judgment and so I see nothing
- 11:25strange in trees that had such profound
- 11:28spiritual effect
- 11:30it's the sacramental principle again God
- 11:32uses the physical to communicate the
- 11:35spiritual one tree the Tree of Life
- 11:39tells me that Adam and Eve were not by
- 11:41Nature
- 11:42Immortal but were capable of being
- 11:46Immortal they wouldn't have lived
- 11:48forever by some inherent quality of
- 11:50their own but by having access to the
- 11:53Tree of Life they could go on living
- 11:55forever no scientist has yet discovered
- 11:58why we die
- 12:00they have discovered many ways how we
- 12:02die but why is it that the clock inside
- 12:05US starts winding down after all it's a
- 12:08wonderful machine the body and if we
- 12:10keep it supplied with food and fresh air
- 12:12and exercise it can go on replacing
- 12:15itself I change my skin every few weeks
- 12:19most of the dust in your bedroom is your
- 12:20discarded
- 12:22skin and you can go on replacing broken
- 12:26parts an amazing machine why can't it go
- 12:29on on doing
- 12:30that no scientist can tell us they're
- 12:32trying to find the elixir of Life The
- 12:35Secret of keeping the clock
- 12:38going but the secret was in the tree of
- 12:41life and God was making possible for
- 12:44human beings to go on living Forever by
- 12:47putting that tree in the garden for him
- 12:51so man was not inherently Immortal but
- 12:53could be by feeding on God's constant
- 12:56supply of life the other tree however
- 13:01was a very significant tree when you
- 13:04read the word knowledge substitute for
- 13:07that the word experience for knowledge
- 13:09in the Bible is personal
- 13:11experience Adam knew Eve and she
- 13:15conceived and bore a son that's what
- 13:17knowledge is in Scripture it is a
- 13:19personal experience of someone or
- 13:21something to
- 13:23know and God said I don't want you to
- 13:27know good and evil or to put it simply I
- 13:31want you to retain your
- 13:34innocence tragedy is every one of us in
- 13:37this room has lost our innocence in one
- 13:39way or another because once you do a
- 13:40wrong thing you can never be the same as
- 13:43you were you you may be forgiven but
- 13:46you've lost your innocence the terrible
- 13:50thing to lose because happiness belongs
- 13:52to
- 13:53innocence that's why Paul said in things
- 13:56evil I'd rather be as innocent as a baby
- 14:00innocence is happiness and God wanted
- 14:03Adam and Eve to retain their innocence
- 14:05so why did he put such a tree within
- 14:07their reach it was his way of saying I
- 14:10retain moral authority over you in other
- 14:15words you don't decide for yourself
- 14:17what's right and wrong you trust me to
- 14:19tell you what's right and wrong and of
- 14:22course every parent hopes their children
- 14:23will do the same you hope your children
- 14:26won't find out the hard way what's bad
- 14:28for them
- 14:29you hope they'll trust you and keep off
- 14:31what's bad but that is your parental
- 14:34Authority and God is saying to the human
- 14:37beings he's created you are not
- 14:40landlords on Earth you are the tenants
- 14:42and I'm the landlord and I retain the
- 14:45right to tell you what's good for you
- 14:47and what isn't the trouble is most of us
- 14:50in fact all of us in some way or another
- 14:53won't be told we're going to try it for
- 14:56ourselves to see whether it's good or
- 14:58bad there is result is you lose your
- 15:00innocence you can never be the same
- 15:02again it's tragic well now that's what
- 15:05the tree stood for it was saying you
- 15:08still relate to me as your moral
- 15:11Authority I still decide what's good and
- 15:13bad for
- 15:15you then the relationship alongside man
- 15:19not only needs to relate to that which
- 15:20is beneath him and he who is above him
- 15:24he needs someone alongside him we need
- 15:27horizontal relation ships something
- 15:30rather sad about an old age pensioner
- 15:32who only relates to a
- 15:34cat there's something not fully human
- 15:37there do you know what I
- 15:38mean nor are we fully human if we're
- 15:41just relating to God and not to other
- 15:43people we need this network I love the
- 15:47word Shalom I always sign it in books
- 15:49and I'm willing to sign you books later
- 15:50by the way but I always sign Shalom then
- 15:53my name Shalom is a beautiful word it
- 15:55means harmony harmony with yourself
- 15:59harmony with God harmony with other
- 16:01people and harmony with nature there's
- 16:04nothing better you could wish for
- 16:06somebody than that is there Shalom
- 16:09harmony with yourself with others with
- 16:11God and with nature here we have in
- 16:13Genesis 2 a picture of that Harmony and
- 16:17God
- 16:18warns Adam break that
- 16:21Harmony and you have to
- 16:24die not necessarily immediately but the
- 16:27clock will begin to wind down
- 16:29and the reason why God said that is very
- 16:31simple it seems a harsh punishment for
- 16:35just a little sin but God is saying that
- 16:37once you have experienced
- 16:40evil I have to limit the length of your
- 16:43life on Earth otherwise evil would
- 16:46become
- 16:47Eternal now you can see the sense of
- 16:49that can't you that if God allowed
- 16:52rebellious people to live forever they
- 16:54would ruin his Universe
- 16:56forever so he has put it time limit on
- 17:00those who will not accept his moral
- 17:03Authority now man needed this horizontal
- 17:07relationship a suitable companion and
- 17:11however much a pet May mean a dog or a
- 17:14cat or a bird cannot ever replace
- 17:17personal friendship with other human
- 17:20beings now in Genesis one male and
- 17:23female are equal in
- 17:26dignity and we shall see later in
- 17:29depravity and in Destiny let there be no
- 17:33mistake the first statement about male
- 17:35and female in the Bible they are both
- 17:37equally in the image of God but in
- 17:41Genesis 2 their function is different
- 17:45and we notice four things that are all
- 17:48picked up in the New Testament number
- 17:49one woman is made from
- 17:53man she therefore derives her being from
- 17:57him number two
- 17:59she is made after man therefore he
- 18:03carries the responsibility of the
- 18:05firstborn the significance of that will
- 18:08become clear in Genesis 3 where Adam is
- 18:12blamed for the sin not Eve he was
- 18:16responsible for her and the third thing
- 18:20that is stated is that she was made for
- 18:23him Adam had a job before he had a wife
- 18:27and man is made primarily for his work
- 18:31and woman is made primarily for
- 18:33relationships that doesn't mean that a
- 18:35man mustn't have relationships so that a
- 18:37woman mustn't go out to work it it's
- 18:39asking what is the primary purpose for
- 18:43which God made male and female and the
- 18:46fact that men named woman in this
- 18:50chapter also shows how the partnership
- 18:53is to work not as a democracy how can it
- 18:56when there are only two votes and each
- 18:58has one
- 19:00but as a partnership in which one has
- 19:03the
- 19:04responsibility rather than the right of
- 19:07leadership and that's how it is meant to
- 19:10work in
- 19:12cooperation it becomes competition when
- 19:15that leadership becomes domination on
- 19:17the part of the men that simply leads to
- 19:19Defiance in the woman and the harmony is
- 19:24broken there are many things said here
- 19:26in Genesis 2 which are terribly relevant
- 19:31here they are sex is
- 19:33good it is not spelled sin n it is
- 19:37beautiful in fact God said it was very
- 19:40good sex was created for partnership
- 19:44rather than
- 19:45Parenthood that's a very important point
- 19:48which has bearing on the question of
- 19:51contraception the pattern for sexual
- 19:55enjoyment is
- 19:57monogamy the school boy called it
- 19:59monotony but actually that means to be
- 20:02married to one person for the rest of
- 20:04your joint
- 20:06existence that here marriage is made up
- 20:08of two things leaving and cleaving which
- 20:12means there is a physical and a social
- 20:14aspect which together make a
- 20:17marriage either without the other is not
- 20:19a marriage sexual intercourse without
- 20:22social recognition is not marriage it's
- 20:24fornication social recognition without
- 20:27consumation is not a marriage um and
- 20:31therefore should be
- 20:33annulled an important Point here is that
- 20:35marriage takes precedence over all other
- 20:39relationships there would be no jokes
- 20:41about parents-in-law if that had been
- 20:45observed throughout history a person's
- 20:48partner is their first priority before
- 20:50all other
- 20:52relationships before even the children
- 20:56that husband and wife put each other abs
- 20:58absolutely top
- 21:00priority the ideal here painted of a
- 21:03couple is with nothing to hide from each
- 21:06other with no embarrassment and total
- 21:09openness to each other amazing picture
- 21:12here and it's to this picture that Jesus
- 21:15was to appeal centuries later there are
- 21:18many more things I could have pointed
- 21:20out well now here is a human being in
- 21:23this Matrix of relationships with a God
- 21:27above with companion alongside and with
- 21:32nature underneath to subdue what is
- 21:36below to submit to what is above or who
- 21:40is above and to look to each other for
- 21:43support
- 21:45alongside that's the picture and these
- 21:47are the three basic relationships which
- 21:50every human being needs and needs to get
- 21:53right and when sin comes in as we shall
- 21:56see every one of these relationships is
- 21:59spoiled the whole network is
- 22:03broken well now this is Genesis 2
- 22:07looking at men in his context as a
- 22:10creature within creation and the
- 22:13messages that it brings are very clear
- 22:16and very much
- 22:18needed however there are scientific
- 22:22problems and particularly two which I
- 22:26feel we ought to look at briefly during
- 22:28during this talk the one is where do
- 22:31prehistoric men fit in in other words
- 22:36modern man's relationship to prehistoric
- 22:39men and the other of course is the much
- 22:42bigger question is man directly and
- 22:45physically related to the animal world
- 22:48the whole question of
- 22:49evolution be much easier to discuss
- 22:52Evolution if it was limited to plants
- 22:53and animals it was the inclusion of man
- 22:57in that theory
- 22:59that provoked the major crisis and
- 23:01indeed raises the major question let's
- 23:04look first then at our relationship to
- 23:09prehistoric men since various remains
- 23:13have been found especially by the leis
- 23:17father and son in the Ori gorge in Kenya
- 23:21and in other places the claim that human
- 23:23life began in Africa rather than the
- 23:26Middle East where the Bible puts it this
- 23:28rais es all kinds of
- 23:30questions we need to look first then at
- 23:33the relationship of modern man to
- 23:36prehistoric men what does science say
- 23:38about this what does Scripture say and
- 23:40can they be
- 23:41reconciled let's look first what the
- 23:43Bible says about the origin of man quite
- 23:47clearly the Bible says man is made of
- 23:50the same original material as the
- 23:53animals the animals were made from the
- 23:55dust of the earth we too are made of
- 23:57exactly the the same minerals that are
- 24:00found in the crust of the earth I gather
- 24:03that the minerals in my body are worth
- 24:05about 85
- 24:08P doesn't help my self-esteem but I know
- 24:12that all these elements will go back to
- 24:14the Earth either quickly in creation or
- 24:16slowly in burial but they'll go back to
- 24:19where they belong and where they came
- 24:21from so that man and animals are made
- 24:23from the same stuff and that phrase in
- 24:26Genesis 2 that God breathed into the
- 24:28dust Man became a living soul don't let
- 24:33that word Soul mislead you that exact
- 24:36phrase is used of the animals in Genesis
- 24:381 they are called living Souls because
- 24:43in Hebrew the word Soul simply means a
- 24:46breathing
- 24:48body and so since animals and men are
- 24:50described as living Souls they are the
- 24:53same kind of beings we are breathing
- 24:55bodies that's why when your body is in
- 24:57danger of stopping breathing you send
- 25:00out an
- 25:02SOS instead of an S so you send out save
- 25:06our souls what you mean is save my
- 25:08breathing body that's Hebrew
- 25:11talk again Lord sopr in h Park Corner
- 25:14was once
- 25:15asked where what shape is your soul and
- 25:18he replied
- 25:20oblong which is good
- 25:22theology I am an oblong Soul I'll be
- 25:26buried in an Oblong Box that's the shape
- 25:28of my soul and the questioner then asked
- 25:32him then where is the soul in the body
- 25:35he said where the music is in the
- 25:38organ which again was good theology
- 25:41because you can take an organ or a piano
- 25:42to pieces and you won't find the music
- 25:45but it's
- 25:46there it's there when it's made into a
- 25:48living thing by somebody else now that's
- 25:51important because that word soul in
- 25:53Genesis 2 has misled many people into
- 25:56thinking that what make man unique is
- 25:58that he has a soul no that word soul is
- 26:02simply means a breathing body but I
- 26:04think I have to say that Genesis 2
- 26:07speaks very clearly of man as a special
- 26:12creation and does seem incompatible with
- 26:15believing that men and the anthropoid
- 26:18Apes came from common stock so there is
- 26:20a direct Clash there and the statement
- 26:23that he is made in the image of
- 26:25God that he's made direct from dust and
- 26:28not from an animal and made in the image
- 26:30of God seems to put him in a very
- 26:33special creation category and the Hebrew
- 26:35word barah is used three times as I've
- 26:38said of matter life and man as if
- 26:41there's something quite new and unique
- 26:43about
- 26:45men now when we look at what science
- 26:48says oh by the way
- 26:50historical uh understanding of men
- 26:53emphasizes the unity of the human race
- 26:56Paul speaking in Athens said said God
- 26:58has made us of one blood that's true I
- 27:01know there are different varieties of
- 27:02blood but everything in history points
- 27:05to the unity of our human race at
- 27:07present and I've studied agricultural
- 27:10archaeology a little and it's
- 27:12interesting that agricultural
- 27:14archaeology puts the origins of growing
- 27:17corn and domesticating animals exactly
- 27:21where the Bible puts the Garden of Eden
- 27:23the earliest traces we have of
- 27:26Agriculture are in Northeast turkey
- 27:29Southern Armenia exactly where the
- 27:32Garden of Eden was I found that an
- 27:34interesting sidelight but when we ask
- 27:36what science is saying many people would
- 27:40have us look at this false antithesis
- 27:44has science made false investigations
- 27:47into prehistoric men or has scripture
- 27:50given us false information once again
- 27:53the
- 27:54repudiation of one or the other is
- 27:57presented tour us for example it said
- 27:59that piltdown men was a
- 28:02forgery have you heard that you know
- 28:05pill down man down in Sussex there's a
- 28:08pub called that right near the spot
- 28:10where it was found but piltown man was
- 28:13discovered to be the jaw of a
- 28:15pig and many Christians threw their hats
- 28:18up in the air shouted Hallelujah and
- 28:19said there you are science was
- 28:22wrong but we have to be honest and say
- 28:24who discovered piltown was a
- 28:26forgery was wasn't Christians who
- 28:29discovered that it was science that
- 28:31discovered it was a forgery you can't
- 28:33have it both ways Christians you can't
- 28:36say science is wrong because pill down
- 28:38was a forgery when science discovered it
- 28:39was a forgery we must be honest about
- 28:42all this and quite clearly science has
- 28:46discovered remains that look
- 28:48astonishingly like
- 28:52us some of the different um terms I've
- 28:56written some of them down here I thought
- 28:58head neander man peaking men Java Man
- 29:01Australian men and the Leakes have
- 29:04claimed now to have got back to 4
- 29:07million years ago and found human
- 29:09remains in Africa and now it's almost
- 29:13accepted that human Origins are to be
- 29:16found in Africa rather than the Middle
- 29:19East well now it's interesting the
- 29:21dating of this Homo sapiens is said to
- 29:23go back 30,000 years nandal 40 to 150,00
- 29:28,000 swansom 200,000 erectus that's
- 29:31China and Java Man 300,000 Australian
- 29:34man 500,000 and now African men 2 and a
- 29:38half million 3 million 4
- 29:40million what do we say about all this
- 29:44well the first thing we need to say very
- 29:46strongly is that nothing has yet been
- 29:48found that is half ape and Half
- 29:52Men there are prehistoric human remains
- 29:55but there's nothing half in half as yet
- 29:59second thing I want to say is that not
- 30:01all these groups are our
- 30:04ancestors and that too is now
- 30:06acknowledged so that anthropology is now
- 30:09in a state of flux and these are not
- 30:11ours third thing they don't follow a
- 30:15progressive
- 30:16order have you seen these pictures of a
- 30:19sort of ape gradually straightening up
- 30:22and getting a bigger
- 30:24head I mean I could do the same thing
- 30:26with airlanes this is a picture of the
- 30:29evolution of supersonic
- 30:31aircraft and it all looks so neat but
- 30:34that didn't develop into that by itself
- 30:38and just making a picture of the
- 30:39development doesn't prove a thing in
- 30:42fact it does prove that there was an
- 30:43intelligence making those things but um
- 30:47we've seen all this it doesn't follow
- 30:50some of the earliest human remains had
- 30:52larger brains than today and walked more
- 30:55upright and in fact the consent of
- 30:58opinion now is that none of these groups
- 31:00are
- 31:01ours not Homo sapiens well what how do
- 31:04we deal with this there are three
- 31:07possible ways one is to say that
- 31:09prehistoric man was biblical man and
- 31:12what we're digging up was the same as
- 31:14Adam made in the image of God some have
- 31:17even suggested that Genesis 1 was
- 31:19Paleolithic hunting men and Genesis 2
- 31:22was Neolithic farming
- 31:25men well that's one possibility the
- 31:27second is that prehistoric men at some
- 31:30point changed into biblical men that at
- 31:34some point this animal likee or manlike
- 31:37animal became the image of God and then
- 31:40there's a discussion as to whether one
- 31:42changed or all of them changed and that
- 31:45leads to more discussion the third
- 31:47possibility is that prehistoric men were
- 31:50not biblical men they had our physical
- 31:53appearance more or less they used tools
- 31:56but there is no trace of of religion or
- 31:59of prayer they were not made in the
- 32:01image of God which of those
- 32:04three I'm not going to tell you which I
- 32:06think because my feeling is that
- 32:08anthropology is such in such a state of
- 32:11flux that we don't need to answer the
- 32:13question and even if we could does it
- 32:17really
- 32:18matter I'm reminded of the two
- 32:20chimpanzees arguing and one said to the
- 32:22other am I my Keeper's
- 32:26brother well let's move
- 32:29on let's move on to
- 32:32Evolution which is the big isue not how
- 32:35do we relate to prehistoric men but how
- 32:38do we relate to the animals and I must
- 32:40give you a few terms to go on with so we
- 32:44know what we're talking about most
- 32:46assume that evolution is Charles
- 32:48Darwin's theory it isn't actually it was
- 32:51Aristotle's and in modern days it was
- 32:54arasmus Darwin who propounded it that
- 32:57was Charles his granddad but Charles
- 32:59picked it up from his atheist
- 33:01grandfather and he made it popular now
- 33:03there's certain terms we need to know
- 33:06the first is variation which is the
- 33:08belief that there have been small
- 33:10gradual changes in form which have
- 33:13passed on to each generation so each
- 33:16generation changes slightly and passes
- 33:18on the change the second is that from
- 33:21those variations there has been a
- 33:23natural
- 33:24selection which means the survival of
- 33:27those most suited to their
- 33:30environment in other words against the
- 33:33coal pit heaps in Northeast England the
- 33:36black moth was more suited to camouflage
- 33:39than the white so the white moth died
- 33:41out and the black moth survived now that
- 33:44the coal slag heaps have gone in my part
- 33:47of the country the Northeast the white
- 33:49moths are coming back again and the
- 33:51black Ms are disappearing which is more
- 33:54suitable to its environment there's a
- 33:56natural selection going going on so that
- 33:59those that are more adapted to their
- 34:01environment survive this selection is
- 34:03natural it happens automatically within
- 34:07nature with no help from outside nature
- 34:09nature herself selects those species
- 34:12more
- 34:13suitable but that slow gradual process
- 34:16has now changed a Frenchman called Lamar
- 34:19said that instead of slow gradual
- 34:22changes there were sudden huge changes
- 34:25mutations he called them it was more
- 34:28like a staircase than an escalator and
- 34:31there's been debate between these two
- 34:32things to try and account two more terms
- 34:36then we can look at it the first term
- 34:39microevolution believes that there has
- 34:41been limited change within certain
- 34:45animal groups within the horse group or
- 34:47the dog group and I believe that science
- 34:50has certainly proved micro
- 34:55Evolution but the macro evolution is the
- 34:58belief that all animals came from the
- 35:01same origin and that all are related and
- 35:05all go back to the same simple form of
- 35:07life that developed into a more and more
- 35:10complex
- 35:11being one other word that I want to
- 35:13introduce you to which to me is crucial
- 35:16it's the word
- 35:19struggle believing
- 35:21this the word struggle means the
- 35:24survival of the
- 35:26fittest and that is a concept that has
- 35:29caused more suffering in the 20th
- 35:32century more human suffering than almost
- 35:36any other idea I want to show you how in
- 35:39a
- 35:41moment I'm not going to argue the case
- 35:44for or against Evolution except to point
- 35:46out that evolution is still a
- 35:50theory it has not been proven and in
- 35:54fact the more evidence we get from
- 35:56fossil life
- 35:58the less it looks like being an adequate
- 36:01theory of how the different forms of
- 36:03life arose for example in the fossil
- 36:06evidence most different groups appear
- 36:09simultaneously quite quickly in the
- 36:11Cambrian Period they don't gradually
- 36:15appear over ages they appear almost
- 36:17together secondly the complex forms of
- 36:20life and the simple forms of life appear
- 36:24together there isn't a train from the
- 36:28simple to the
- 36:29complex thirdly there are very very few
- 36:32Bridge fossils that are halfway between
- 36:35one species and another next all life
- 36:40right from the beginning is very
- 36:43complicated it always had DNA in it next
- 36:47mutations sudden changes usually
- 36:51deform and cause creatures to die
- 36:54out
- 36:56next inter breeding usually leads to
- 37:00sterility and so I could go
- 37:03on above all the statistics do not allow
- 37:06for this to have happened there isn't
- 37:08enough
- 37:09time that's why a new theory is that
- 37:12life started on another planet and
- 37:14floated through space and landed here
- 37:16there really isn't enough time here
- 37:20statistically for all these varieties to
- 37:23have
- 37:25developed I want to go on to something
- 37:27quite different the effect of this
- 37:30theory on human
- 37:32beings not only has it fed our pride in
- 37:36thinking we have come so far that we are
- 37:39going to go on up and up and up and on
- 37:42and on and on as an English prime
- 37:43minister put it which is rather better
- 37:45than Back to Basics but
- 37:49uh I want to show you
- 37:52now what has happened with this word
- 37:55struggle you'll find it in American
- 37:59capitalism men like John de Rockefeller
- 38:02said business is the survival of the
- 38:06fittest and that led to Untold
- 38:09suffering you find it in
- 38:11fascism Adolf Hitler's book was called
- 38:14my
- 38:15struggle and he believed in the survival
- 38:18of the fittest the fittest being the
- 38:20German Aryan
- 38:21race and certainly not the Jewish
- 38:25people you find it in commun M KL Marx
- 38:28wrote about the struggle between the
- 38:31Bourgeois and the proletariat which must
- 38:33issue in
- 38:35Revolution you find it this word
- 38:37struggle in the early days of
- 38:40colonialism when people were simply
- 38:42wiped out in the name of
- 38:44progress and I am bold enough to say
- 38:48that this idea the survival of the fitst
- 38:51when applied to human beings has caused
- 38:55more suffering than any other
- 38:58idea but it has also faced us with two
- 39:01huge
- 39:02choices and I'm going to take a few
- 39:05extra minutes in this talk just to give
- 39:07you these choices what are we really
- 39:11saying when we look at the issue of
- 39:14creation and evolution it faces us with
- 39:17a mental
- 39:19choice if you believe in creation you
- 39:22believe in a father God if you believe
- 39:25in evolution you tend to go from Mother
- 39:28Nature a lady who doesn't
- 39:30exist if you believe in creation you
- 39:33believe that this universe was the
- 39:34result of a personal
- 39:37choice or an impersonal
- 39:41chance that there was a designed purpose
- 39:44under creation but under
- 39:47Evolution only a random
- 39:50pattern with
- 39:52creation the universe is a supernatural
- 39:55production an evolution it's a natural
- 39:59process under creation the whole
- 40:02universe is an open situation open to
- 40:05personal intervention both by God and
- 40:08man here we have nature as a closed
- 40:11system that operates
- 40:14itself there we have the concept of
- 40:17Providence that God cares for his
- 40:19creation and provides for it and looks
- 40:22after it here we have simply coincidence
- 40:26when anything good happens it's merely a
- 40:30coincidence on that side we have a faith
- 40:32based on fact on this side a faith based
- 40:35on fancy for it's simply a theory on
- 40:38that side God is free to make
- 40:42something and to make man in his own
- 40:44image on this side man is free to make
- 40:47God in whatever image he chooses in his
- 40:51imagination that's the kind of mental
- 40:53difference of thinking of creation and
- 40:56evolution
- 40:58but when we look beyond that we see that
- 41:00behind it there is a moral choice see
- 41:04the question we're trying to answer now
- 41:06is why is it that people seize on the
- 41:09theory of evolution hold it almost
- 41:12fanatically the answer is deep down it's
- 41:15the only alternative if you want to
- 41:18believe there is no God over
- 41:20us under creation God is Lord under
- 41:23Evolution man is Lord Creation with we
- 41:27are under Divine
- 41:28Authority but here we are autonomous as
- 41:31humans and can decide things for
- 41:33ourselves here there are absolute
- 41:36standards of right or wrong here there
- 41:38are only relative
- 41:40situations here we talk of Duty and
- 41:44responsibility but here we talk of
- 41:48demand and
- 41:50rights there we have an infant
- 41:54dependence we become as little children
- 41:56and speak of a heavenly father but here
- 41:58man is proud of adult Independence man
- 42:01come of age no longer needing God there
- 42:05man is a fallen creature here he is
- 42:08rising there salvation of the weak here
- 42:13survival of the strong n the philosopher
- 42:16behind Hitler said he hated Christianity
- 42:20because it kept weak people going it
- 42:23looked after sick people and dying
- 42:26people but his philosophy was survival
- 42:29of the strong there right is might that
- 42:33when you do what is right you are
- 42:34powerful here might is right when you
- 42:37are powerful whatever you do is right
- 42:39that leads to a situation of Peace this
- 42:41to war always has done that emphasizes
- 42:45obedience this says indulge
- 42:48yourself that says faith hope and love
- 42:51are the three main virtues in life this
- 42:54says fatalism helplessness and luck
- 42:58are where we are that leads to Heaven
- 43:00this leads to hell I have drawn this out
- 43:04so that you can see where the theory
- 43:06begins to lead when you think of man as
- 43:09simply a developed animal I am not
- 43:12surprised when children have been told
- 43:13for 10 years in school you came from the
- 43:16animals if when they leave school they
- 43:18behave like
- 43:20that well I've given you a feel of the
- 43:23issue the next talk we'll see how man
- 43:26has fallen and the effects that had on
- 43:29his family on his Society on so many
- 43:33other
