Unlocking the Old Testament Part 3 - Genesis 2 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02it's the story of how God was seeking a
- 0:06bride for his son each book is different
- 0:09from every other book I'm trying to give
- 0:11you the keys for you to unlock it for
- 0:15[Music]
- 0:26yourself I'd like to give you a little
- 0:27bit of a philosophy lesson
- 0:30everybody has a philosophy it's your way
- 0:33of thinking about
- 0:34things the word means simply to love
- 0:37wisdom uh or to seek the answers to Big
- 0:40questions and all of us have a
- 0:42philosophy but the trouble is in our
- 0:44modern world there are so many different
- 0:46philosophies being thrown at us through
- 0:48the mass media and in so many different
- 0:51ways that we get into confusion if you
- 0:54accept Genesis 1 Then There are a whole
- 0:57lot of modern philosophies that are
- 0:59rulle rulled out by the very first page
- 1:02of the Bible I've just made a list of
- 1:04some of them I cringe when I hear a word
- 1:07ending in ISM ISM there are only two
- 1:12isms I'm happy with baptism and
- 1:14evangelism but apart from that all the
- 1:17other isms usually are philosophies of a
- 1:20false kind for example if you believe
- 1:23Genesis one atheism is out atheism
- 1:27believes there is no God I'm an atheist
- 1:30thank God said
- 1:31someone um
- 1:34agnosticism agnosticism is ruled out
- 1:37agnosticism says I don't know whether
- 1:39there's a God or not well Genesis 1 says
- 1:41there is so you can't believe Genesis 1
- 1:44being agnostic animism which is the
- 1:47belief in many spirits controlling our
- 1:50world spirits of rivers spirits of
- 1:52mountains there's still a lot of animism
- 1:54in the world that's ruled out polytheism
- 1:57that's the belief that there are many
- 1:59gods Genesis 1 rules that out dualism
- 2:02believes there are two Gods one good and
- 2:04one bad and the good God is responsible
- 2:07for the good things that happen and the
- 2:09bad God for the bad things well that's
- 2:11not the biblical philosophy either
- 2:14monotheism believes there is only one
- 2:17God one person Judaism believes that
- 2:20Islam believes that but uh Genesis rules
- 2:24that out by using the plural word
- 2:27Elohim deism beli beles that God is the
- 2:31creator but he cannot now control what
- 2:34he's created he's made something like a
- 2:36watch wounded up and now it runs on its
- 2:39own laws so Miracle becomes impossible
- 2:41deism is very common even in church do
- 2:45you believe God can change the weather
- 2:47if you don't believe that you're a deest
- 2:49you may believe that he created the
- 2:51universe but he can't control it theism
- 2:55believes that God not only created the
- 2:57world but is also in control control of
- 3:00everything and everyone is made and
- 3:02theism is one step toward the biblical
- 3:07philosophy existentialism believes
- 3:09experiences God our choices our
- 3:13affirmation of our self that is religion
- 3:16humanism believes that man is God
- 3:19rationalism believes reason is God
- 3:22materialism believes that only matter is
- 3:24real mysticism believes that only spirit
- 3:27is real monism is a rather funny one but
- 3:31it's very common today and that is that
- 3:32matter and spirit are essentially one
- 3:35and the same thing pantheism believes
- 3:39everything is God a modern version of it
- 3:42is called
- 3:43panentheism God is in everything well
- 3:47now all those are ruled out by Genesis 1
- 3:50if you want an ism that sums up the
- 3:52Bible philosophy it is triun
- 3:57theism three in one Creator and
- 4:00controller of the universe that's the
- 4:03biblical way of thinking it comes right
- 4:06out in Genesis 1 and it stays right
- 4:08through to the last chapter of
- 4:10Revelation well now let's move on from
- 4:13these
- 4:14rather intellectual subjects to look at
- 4:18Genesis 1 itself and the first thing
- 4:21that strikes us is the style of Genesis
- 4:241 it is not written in scientific
- 4:28language Hallelujah for that otherwise
- 4:32even in our scientific age very few
- 4:35could understand it I picked this up
- 4:38somewhere you won't be able to see it at
- 4:40the back but it'll be on the video and
- 4:42God said let oh what an equation
- 4:46mathematical equation comes so God said
- 4:49all that and there was
- 4:51light because that's the scientific
- 4:54formula for light aren't you glad that
- 4:56Genesis 1 wasn't written in scientific
- 4:59language anguage or none of us would
- 5:01understand it or very few of us anyway
- 5:04it is written in simplistic
- 5:08language for example there are only
- 5:11three kinds of vegetation in Genesis 1
- 5:14grass plants and trees it's a very
- 5:19simple categorization of vegetation
- 5:22isn't it everybody knows grass plants
- 5:25and trees there are only three kinds of
- 5:28animal mentioned in Genesis 1
- 5:31domesticated animals animals that we
- 5:34hunt for food and wild animals now these
- 5:38simple
- 5:40classifications are understood by
- 5:42everybody everywhere three different
- 5:45size plants three different kinds of
- 5:48animals depending on their relationship
- 5:50to us this is what we mean by
- 5:53simplistic there are only
- 5:5676 separate root words in the the whole
- 5:59of Genesis 1 that's remarkably
- 6:03few furthermore every one of those words
- 6:06is to be found in every language on
- 6:08Earth so that Genesis 1 is the easiest
- 6:11chapter to translate of the whole
- 6:14Bible it takes a genius to be that
- 6:19simple you see God like every writer has
- 6:23to ask who's going to read what I write
- 6:26you've got to angle your writing towards
- 6:29your potential
- 6:31reader and there's such a thing as a fog
- 6:34index for writers which I test my
- 6:37writing on and you take so many
- 6:39sentences you count the number of multi-
- 6:42syllable words and how many sentences
- 6:44you put them in a mathematical formula
- 6:46and then it comes out and you know
- 6:48exactly who will be able to read what
- 6:50you write whether it's Readers Digest
- 6:52readers or scientific thesis readers and
- 6:55it's a good way of checking now God
- 6:57wanted the story of creation to reach
- 7:00everybody in every time and in every
- 7:03place so he made it utterly utterly
- 7:08simple and the result is that a child
- 7:10can read Genesis 1 and get the message
- 7:13and it can be translated into any
- 7:15language it takes genius to be that
- 7:18simple Einstein was asked to explain his
- 7:21theory of the relativity of time and he
- 7:25said one minute sitting on a hot stove
- 7:28seems much longer than 1 hour talking to
- 7:31a pretty
- 7:33girl now it takes genius to be that
- 7:37simple and everybody now understands the
- 7:40theory of the relativity of time God
- 7:42wanted to be that simple so he didn't
- 7:45write a scientific account of creation
- 7:47he wrote a simplistic
- 7:49one God is the
- 7:53subject along with the word and the
- 7:55spirit there's a trinity coming in
- 7:57already especially when later it says
- 8:00let us make men the verbs are very
- 8:03simple and I want to point out the
- 8:04difference between created and made the
- 8:07the Hebrew word created barah means to
- 8:09make something out of nothing and it
- 8:12only occurs three times in the whole of
- 8:14Genesis one for matter life and
- 8:19man only at those three points was God
- 8:22creating something absolutely new in
- 8:26between he uses the word made which
- 8:28means to make something out of something
- 8:30else now we can make things we can
- 8:34manufacture things but we can't
- 8:37create and that's a very important point
- 8:40in Genesis 1 there are three points at
- 8:42which God does something totally new out
- 8:44of nothing matter life and Men we might
- 8:49say today matter DNA and
- 8:52Men the objects the Days 1 to 7 again
- 8:55utterly
- 8:57simple each sentence is so so simple it
- 8:59has a subject a verb and an object the
- 9:04grammar is is so simple and
- 9:07straightforward that again anybody can
- 9:09understand it it's a remarkable
- 9:13production the structure of Genesis 1 is
- 9:16beautifully put together it is so
- 9:18orderly spread over six days but the six
- 9:22days are divided into three and three
- 9:25you may never have noticed this but
- 9:27clearly there are two lots of three days
- 9:30at the beginning of it all it says the
- 9:32Earth was
- 9:33uninhabitable and
- 9:35uninhabited it was without form and void
- 9:39or
- 9:40empty and God takes three days to form
- 9:44it and three days to inhabit
- 9:47it in the first three days he creates an
- 9:51environment but in the second three days
- 9:53he's creating individual things or
- 9:56creatures that inhabit that environment
- 9:59so he does it in order he prepares the
- 10:01environment first and then he puts
- 10:03creatures into the environment and
- 10:05there's an amazing
- 10:07correspondence between the first three
- 10:09days and the last three days the first
- 10:12three days he creates a varied
- 10:15environment by contrast contrast between
- 10:18light from Darkness sky from Ocean and
- 10:21land from sea he's creating
- 10:24distinctions which makes for variety
- 10:27having created that
- 10:29on the third day he put plants in but
- 10:33now he creates the inhabitants now the
- 10:36sun and moon in that sense are the
- 10:38inhabitants of light I'll come back to
- 10:40that later there's a very important
- 10:41Point here but light from Darkness was
- 10:45General now we have specifics the sun
- 10:48moon and stars inhabiting that light and
- 10:51that
- 10:52Darkness the sky from the ocean fills
- 10:56them with birds and
- 10:57fish and and on the sixth day on the dry
- 11:01land the animals and human beings appear
- 11:04how many of you had ever noticed that
- 11:07parallel between the first three days
- 11:08and the second three days could I
- 11:10see just a few of you isn't it a
- 11:13remarkable order it's beautifully done
- 11:16God is doing things in such an orderly
- 11:19and precise manner he's actually
- 11:21bringing order out of chaos which he
- 11:23loves to do now I told you in the last
- 11:27talk that Genesis 1 is method matical
- 11:30the three figures that keep coming
- 11:33through the account even in the English
- 11:36are three seven and
- 11:3810 three is what God is seven is the
- 11:42perfect number right through scripture
- 11:44and 10 is always a completeness now when
- 11:46you look at the three sevens and T it's
- 11:49remarkable at only three points does God
- 11:53actually create
- 11:55something three times he calls something
- 11:58by name
- 11:59three times he makes something three
- 12:02times He blesses something all the way
- 12:05through even in English you'll find
- 12:07everything is in
- 12:08threes the verbs are in
- 12:11threes next
- 12:13sevens seven times it says and God saw
- 12:16that it was good seven times there are
- 12:19seven days that's obvious the first
- 12:22sentence is seven words in the Hebrew
- 12:25the last three sentences in this account
- 12:29creation are all sentences of seven
- 12:31words not in the English I'm afraid but
- 12:34you'll have to take my word for it about
- 12:36the Hebrew now in all this it's in
- 12:39marked contrast to for example the
- 12:41Babylonian epic of creation which is so
- 12:44complicated and so weird that when you
- 12:48compare it with the Simplicity of God's
- 12:50word you will have no doubt which Rings
- 12:54true well now I must plunge I'm afraid
- 12:58at this point into the
- 13:02problem but before I do so let's just
- 13:05underline this point that Genesis 1 is
- 13:08simplistic I think I can do it most
- 13:11easily by imagining a children's book
- 13:15describing how a house is
- 13:17built and if you want to write a
- 13:20children's book you would have to give a
- 13:23simplified summary you would say first
- 13:25came the brick layer who laid the bricks
- 13:28then the the carpenter came to put the
- 13:30window frames and door frames and roof
- 13:33joist on then the plumber came to put
- 13:36the pipes in the water and the waste the
- 13:39electrician came then to put the wires
- 13:42in then the plasterer did the walls The
- 13:44Decorator painted them and finally they
- 13:46all went on holiday so that explaining
- 13:50it simply to Children you would probably
- 13:53explain seven stages do you follow me
- 13:56but that is simplistic and as someone
- 13:59who's involved in designing churches and
- 14:03getting them built I know that life is
- 14:05not that simple you have to have what's
- 14:08called a critical path
- 14:10analysis and you work out when the brick
- 14:13layer has to come and when the carpenter
- 14:15has to come and he may have to come
- 14:16twice and when the plumet it's it's a
- 14:18very complicated business getting a
- 14:20building
- 14:21up but the only people who need to know
- 14:23that are the
- 14:25builders this is good enough and this is
- 14:28is what you would do if you were telling
- 14:30the story to anybody in any time and
- 14:32place do you follow me there's no doubt
- 14:35that Genesis is a
- 14:37simplification and that science can fill
- 14:40out a whole more lot more details for us
- 14:43but God wanted everybody to understand
- 14:46that he did it that he did it in an
- 14:48orderly way that he knew what he was
- 14:51doing but as soon as you talk like that
- 14:55then this bogey of science versus script
- 14:58scripture comes up and uh the tension is
- 15:02there there is a tension in many
- 15:05scientists over anything Supernatural
- 15:08that is because science can only study
- 15:11the natural world can't study the
- 15:13supernatural so that the Supernatural is
- 15:16something science doesn't really have
- 15:18any contact with and and finds difficult
- 15:21to think about but there are specific
- 15:24questions of science that come up in
- 15:27relation to the Genesis 1 account of
- 15:29creation and I feel I must just mention
- 15:32them some of course of the difficulties
- 15:35that people have are
- 15:37flippant did Adam have a naval I've been
- 15:41asked profound isn't it
- 15:45or can snakes talk or where did Cain get
- 15:50his wife Lord SOA was asked that at H
- 15:54Park Corner once and he just said to his
- 15:56questioner why are you so interested in
- 15:58other people people's
- 16:00wives uh there are in fact three
- 16:03possible answers but I'm not going to
- 16:04give them to
- 16:05you one of the latest I read in the
- 16:08national press was did Noah take
- 16:11woodworm into the
- 16:14ark or technically two
- 16:17woodworms or one common one I get asked
- 16:20today is why are dinosaurs never
- 16:23mentioned since we've become so fond of
- 16:25them but these frankly are flippant
- 16:28there are much more serious issues that
- 16:31we have to face the speed of
- 16:34creation geologists tell us it was 4 and
- 16:37a quar billion years Genesis seems to
- 16:40say it was six days there's a little bit
- 16:42of a gap there to be
- 16:44closed similarly the age of the Earth
- 16:47the order of creation actually the
- 16:49remarkable thing is that science
- 16:52agrees with the order of Genesis 1 with
- 16:56one exception and I think that can be
- 16:58explained the exception is that sun moon
- 17:01and stars don't appear till the fourth
- 17:03day after the plants are on Earth but in
- 17:06fact we now know that the original Earth
- 17:09was covered with a thick
- 17:13Cloud uh a Mist in fact Genesis 2 says a
- 17:16Mist covered the whole earth science
- 17:18knows that's true now so that when the
- 17:20first light
- 17:22appeared then it would just be generally
- 17:24seen as lighter
- 17:27Cloud whereas when the plants came and
- 17:30started turning carbon dioxide into
- 17:32oxygen that cleared the mist and for the
- 17:36first time the sun moon and stars
- 17:38appeared in the
- 17:40heavens now given that that actually the
- 17:43appearance of sun moon and stars after
- 17:45the plants was due to clearing that
- 17:48thick Cloud that surrounded the Earth
- 17:50then science agrees exactly with the
- 17:54order of Genesis 1 that uh creatures
- 17:58appeared in the sea before on the land
- 18:00that man appeared last there's an
- 18:02astonishing correspondence on that one
- 18:05so order is not now a major problem but
- 18:08the origin of animals and humans is this
- 18:11whole question of Evolution versus
- 18:13creation and there are other things like
- 18:15the age of the people who lived before
- 18:17the flood methusa
- 18:19969 that's the oldest men and then the
- 18:23extent of the flood itself the tragedy
- 18:26is that to the modern in mind these
- 18:30problems come first in relation to
- 18:33Genesis that's why I didn't take them
- 18:36earlier than now because I believe we've
- 18:38got to get the message of Genesis first
- 18:41of all then tackle the problems later if
- 18:44you just discuss the problems in Genesis
- 18:47you will miss the very important
- 18:49messages that it has to give us but
- 18:52nevertheless we mustn't Overlook the
- 18:55disagreements I want to begin by saying
- 18:57there are three ways of handling this
- 19:00problem of science versus scripture it's
- 19:03very important which way you're going to
- 19:05do it the three ways are to repudiate to
- 19:09segregate or to integrate I'll tell you
- 19:12straight away I believe the third is the
- 19:14right one the first is taken by naive
- 19:17Christians who say you've got to choose
- 19:21you either choose that scripture is
- 19:23right or that science is right but you
- 19:25must repudiate one or the other you
- 19:28can't accept both and that makes it a
- 19:31very simple Choice the result is that
- 19:33unbelievers choose science and Believers
- 19:35choose scripture and both bury their
- 19:38heads in the sand that is not the answer
- 19:41to this problem partly because science
- 19:44has been right in so
- 19:47much we owe these video cameras to
- 19:49science and these
- 19:51spotlights came in a car here we've been
- 19:55on a redh hot telephone line gimini all
- 19:57this week all these things came from
- 20:00science so just to say science is wrong
- 20:04is probably the most foolish line to
- 20:06take in our modern world but it's
- 20:08equally silly to say they're always
- 20:11right but this way of repudiation is not
- 20:14the answer to say one is right and the
- 20:15other is wrong and face people with a
- 20:17choice it leads to dishonesty it leads
- 20:20people to feel that they must commit
- 20:22intellectual suicide in order to believe
- 20:24the Bible and that is a mistake the
- 20:28second
- 20:29way is to keep signs and scripture as
- 20:32far apart as
- 20:34possible and to say that science is
- 20:37concerned with one kind of Truth and
- 20:39scripture with another that science is
- 20:42concerned with physical truth material
- 20:44truth natural truth whereas scripture is
- 20:48concerned with moral truth and
- 20:50Supernatural truth and therefore they
- 20:53deal with entirely separate issues that
- 20:55science tells us how and when
- 20:58the world came to be whereas scripture
- 21:01simply tells us who and why and they are
- 21:04to be kept entirely separate segregate
- 21:06them as far away as possible then they
- 21:10can live together it's a rather strange
- 21:12approach to try and put it in its modern
- 21:15dress science talks about
- 21:19facts whereas scripture is supposed to
- 21:21talk about
- 21:23values and therefore we don't look into
- 21:26the Bible for facts we look into the
- 21:28Bible for
- 21:30values that's a very very common way of
- 21:33talking today even by preachers in
- 21:36churches but it's the wrong solution it
- 21:39fits our Greek thinking and most of us
- 21:41think like Greeks unfortunately and we
- 21:44keep this physical and the spiritual in
- 21:46two watertight compartments the sacred
- 21:49and the secular the temporal and the
- 21:50Eternal that kind of thinking is totally
- 21:53alien to the Hebrew mind which saw God
- 21:56as Creator and Redeemer so that the
- 21:58physical and the spiritual belong
- 22:01together so I don't think this is the
- 22:03answer either it involves
- 22:05treating Genesis as
- 22:08myth Genesis 3 becomes a fable entitled
- 22:13how the snake lost its
- 22:16legs and Adam becomes every man instead
- 22:20of one man I'm sure you've heard this
- 22:22kind of thing so that these are
- 22:26fictional stories teaching us values
- 22:30about God and about
- 22:32ourselves teaching us how to think about
- 22:34God and about ourselves but we mustn't
- 22:36press them into historical
- 22:40fact now if you start on that track and
- 22:44treat Adam and Eve as myth as a story
- 22:48with a moral truth in it but not
- 22:51historical truth then where do you
- 22:55stop as you read through the Bible at
- 22:58first people said Adam and Eve were
- 23:00myths then they moved on a bit and said
- 23:02Noah was a myth the flood story has
- 23:05truth in it but moral truth not
- 23:07historical then they moved on and said
- 23:09Abraham Isaac and Jacob were
- 23:11myths then they moved on and said Moses
- 23:14was a myth and if you saw a recent TV
- 23:17series on the exodus by a man called
- 23:19Roma you know that he was treating it as
- 23:22myth a nice story with a good moral in
- 23:25it but not historically true and then
- 23:28they moved on until now there are
- 23:30theologians who treat the resurrection
- 23:33and the Virgin birth of Jesus as
- 23:36myth stories with the truth in
- 23:39them that's my problem with this
- 23:41approach where do you stop
- 23:44ultimately there's no history left in
- 23:46the Bible there are only values no facts
- 23:49of course it makes it possible then to
- 23:51put the Bible alongside the Quran and
- 23:54alongside the holy vas and other
- 23:56scriptures which are
- 23:58values but I believe it's destroyed the
- 24:01Bible God is the god of history history
- 24:03is his story and we are reading facts
- 24:05furthermore as I said earlier Jesus
- 24:08accepted Genesis as
- 24:11factual therefore this is not the answer
- 24:13to the problem but it's probably the
- 24:15most common way that Christians have
- 24:18tried to get over the
- 24:20problem both scripture and science are
- 24:23in fact overlapping circles and they are
- 24:27dealing with some things that are the
- 24:29same and therefore there are apparent
- 24:32contradictions between them which we
- 24:34must look at how then are we going to
- 24:37resolve how can we bring them together
- 24:40well we need to remember two basic
- 24:43things very important and the first
- 24:45thing is the transitional investigations
- 24:49of Science and I mean by that that
- 24:52science
- 24:54changes it's always in
- 24:56transition and things that were regarded
- 24:59as scientific fact years ago are now no
- 25:02longer regarded as scientific fact
- 25:06science changes its views for example it
- 25:10used to believe that the atom was the
- 25:12smallest thing in the universe now we
- 25:15know that each atom is a whole universe
- 25:17in
- 25:18itself it was said until very recently
- 25:21that the X and Y chromosomes decided
- 25:24whether a fetus became a male or a
- 25:26female human being
- 25:28I gather now that's been thrown out of
- 25:30the window and it's something else
- 25:32entirely different you really have to
- 25:35keep changing your mind to catch up the
- 25:38whole discovery of DNA has
- 25:41revolutionized our thinking about life
- 25:44because we now know that the earliest
- 25:47form of life had the most complicated
- 25:49DNA in it and that mathematically DNA is
- 25:53a
- 25:55language it is not a chance combination
- 25:58it is a language passing on a message
- 26:00from one generation to another therefore
- 26:03DNA must have a person behind
- 26:06it that's changing a lot of people's
- 26:08thinking so science changes it is in a
- 26:12state of
- 26:13transition geology is changing I read an
- 26:16article by the science correspondent of
- 26:19the times he said there are now seven
- 26:21different ways of finding out the age of
- 26:23the Earth carbon 14 radiogenic helium
- 26:26magnetic field Decay and oceanic nickel
- 26:29etc etc and he gave a list of the dates
- 26:33that these new methods have revealed and
- 26:36interestingly
- 26:37enough the shortest is 9,000 years and
- 26:40the longest is
- 26:41175,000 years not four and a quar
- 26:45billion well who's right I don't know I
- 26:48think we wait until the scientists make
- 26:50up their mind on many real issues
- 26:54anthropology is now in a state of
- 26:57disorder
- 26:58what we thought were prehistoric men our
- 27:01ancestors are no longer regarded as our
- 27:04ancestors but creatures that came and
- 27:06went and
- 27:08disappeared biology again has changed
- 27:11very few believe in darwinian evolution
- 27:14today so that's the first point I want
- 27:16to make that science does change its
- 27:18opinion and to tie the Bible to any
- 27:21particular age of science would mean
- 27:24that in the Next Generation the Bible
- 27:25would be thrown away as well the second
- 27:28thing I want to say is equally important
- 27:31traditional interpretations of scripture
- 27:34can also
- 27:37change the Bible is inspired but our
- 27:40interpretation of it may not be I think
- 27:43we need to draw a very clear distinction
- 27:46between the Bible text and how we
- 27:49interpret it for example when the Bible
- 27:52talks about the four corners of the
- 27:54earth who interprets that to mean that
- 27:57the Earth is a cube or a
- 28:00square see the Bible
- 28:03uses what we call uh the language of
- 28:06appearance it talks about the sun rising
- 28:09in the East and setting in the west and
- 28:11running around the
- 28:12sky who takes that to mean that the sun
- 28:15is moving around the earth well they
- 28:17used to but it was a wrong
- 28:19interpretation it's usually using simply
- 28:22the language of appearance so that we
- 28:25need to think again about our
- 28:27interpretation of the Bible so that we
- 28:31become a little more flexible I believe
- 28:32in this way when science is realized to
- 28:36be transitional and our interpretation
- 28:38of scriptures seem to be traditional
- 28:41then we'll begin to be willing to
- 28:44rethink I thought I'd illustrate this by
- 28:47looking at the days in Genesis
- 28:501 and I found that there are at
- 28:55least five different ways of
- 28:58interpreting the word day in scripture
- 29:02and I'm going to go through all five and
- 29:04leave you to take a pick how about
- 29:07that there is as I've said a slight
- 29:09discrepancy between six days and 4 and a
- 29:12quter billion years and we need to close
- 29:15the gap in some way so how are we going
- 29:18to take the word day in Genesis 1 it's a
- 29:21Hebrew word yum which sometimes means a
- 29:24day of 24 hours it can also mean a an
- 29:28era as in the day of the horse and cart
- 29:31is over I don't mean a 24-hour day I
- 29:34mean the day of the horse and cart is
- 29:37over but there are five different ways
- 29:39of interpretation the first is to take
- 29:42the word day literally as an Earth Day
- 29:47of 24
- 29:48hours your problem then is to find more
- 29:53time
- 29:55somewhere and you will find various
- 29:57commentaries find more time in one of
- 30:00three ways the first is by finding a gap
- 30:05between verse one and verse two or
- 30:08rather verse two and verse three in
- 30:11other words the Earth it said became
- 30:15without form and void over a very long
- 30:17period and the six days are God putting
- 30:20it right
- 30:21again that's a very common theory you'll
- 30:24find it in the scoffield Bible you'll
- 30:25find it in a number of Bible notes that
- 30:28in fact the six days were the
- 30:32Reconstruction of a world that had gone
- 30:34into chaos over a long period very
- 30:36common
- 30:37theory a second way of finding more time
- 30:41is to find it all in the flood there
- 30:43have been various books notably
- 30:45connected with the names whitcom and
- 30:47Morris that have said that the
- 30:50geological data that we have all come
- 30:53out of the flood not very easy to
- 30:56maintain that most intriguing way of
- 30:58finding time is this that God created
- 31:01genuine antiques begins with the theory
- 31:05how old was God when he was made was
- 31:08Adam when he was made by
- 31:09God wasn't a
- 31:11baby so was he 30 years old when he was
- 31:14made by God in which case anybody
- 31:17meeting him would have said you're 30
- 31:18years old they'd have been wrong he
- 31:20would have been only half an hour old do
- 31:21you follow the theory that God can
- 31:24create genuine Antiques and that he can
- 31:26make a tree that looks like 200 years
- 31:28old and has all the Rings in it it's a
- 31:31possible Theory God could do that but
- 31:33all these are ways of trying to take the
- 31:36day literally and find more time
- 31:38somewhere follow me and you're welcome
- 31:41to take any of those interpretations
- 31:44then there are those who take a day as
- 31:46meaning a geological
- 31:49era that it's a long time it's an age
- 31:53day well that's quite a common theory
- 31:55there therefore we're talking not about
- 31:57six days but about six geological
- 32:01ages the third is the mythological which
- 32:04I've already mentioned that treats the
- 32:06six days as pure myth it's only the
- 32:08poetic framework of the story and the
- 32:11main thing is to get the moral out of
- 32:13the story and forget the framework
- 32:15that's part of the myth that means it's
- 32:18a fabled day one of the most intriguing
- 32:21was by professor wisan of London
- 32:24University he believed the days were Ed
- 32:27educational meaning that God revealed
- 32:30his Creation in stages to Moses and on
- 32:34the first day of a week in moses' life
- 32:37God said this is what I did and then the
- 32:39next day he told him a bit more and the
- 32:41next day a bit more and a bit more so
- 32:44these were school days of
- 32:47Moses hope you're still with me and
- 32:50there are two forms of that theory one
- 32:52is that God revealed creation verbally
- 32:54in words but another intriguing is that
- 32:56he
- 32:57revealed it visually as he did the Book
- 33:00of Revelation to John by giving Moses a
- 33:02kind of picture show and Moses saw uh
- 33:07the light separate from the darkness
- 33:09then the screen went black and then
- 33:11Moses saw another picture of the
- 33:15moisture being separated from the Seas
- 33:17and next picture he saw plants and then
- 33:19animals and birds and so on that it was
- 33:21a kind of picture show which you wrote
- 33:23down but both of those theories whether
- 33:25in word or picture
- 33:27assume that the days belong to Moses
- 33:29School timetable as it were and the
- 33:33final
- 33:34interpretation is that these were God
- 33:37days time is relative to God as well as
- 33:41to us that a thousand days are like a
- 33:43day to God and a day like a thousand
- 33:46years therefore God was saying to me the
- 33:50whole of creation was all in a week's
- 33:53work that's what it was to me and the
- 33:57point of saying that would be that if
- 34:00you take geological time human life
- 34:04loses all
- 34:06significance for example go back to
- 34:08Cleopatra's Needle if you let
- 34:10Cleopatra's Needle represent the age of
- 34:14our
- 34:15planet and put a 10p piece flat on top
- 34:20of the
- 34:21needle that's the age of the human race
- 34:24and if you put a postage stamp on top of
- 34:27that its thickness represents civilized
- 34:31men do you realize we lose all
- 34:35significance in that who are we and God
- 34:39I believe wanted us to think of creation
- 34:42as a week's work because he wanted to
- 34:45get down to the important bit that's us
- 34:48on planet Earth well that's the theory
- 34:52the seventh day note the length of the
- 34:54seventh day because that has lasted
- 34:56centuries it lasted all the way through
- 34:58the Old Testament God's seventh day rest
- 35:02lasted until Easter Sunday when he
- 35:04raised his son from the dead all through
- 35:07the Old Testament there is nothing new
- 35:09created God had finished creation the
- 35:12word new hardly occurs in the Old
- 35:14Testament once yes I can think of once
- 35:17as a verse in Ecclesiastes behold there
- 35:19is nothing new Under the
- 35:22Sun so God rested all through the Old
- 35:25Testament that was a pretty long long
- 35:27day well there are five different
- 35:30ways I think you probably guessed which
- 35:33I'm going for but uh I'm not going to
- 35:35press that these are
- 35:39interpretations God clearly wanted us to
- 35:42think of his work as a week's work
- 35:46that's the message I'm content with that
- 35:49message I personally believe we're
- 35:51talking about God days he's giving us
- 35:54his angle on it that was just a week's
- 35:56work to him to him it's only been a
- 35:59couple of days since Jesus
- 36:01died
- 36:03God time is real to God but it's
- 36:06relative to God as well and we need to
- 36:09remember that well I've taken just one
- 36:12example there I'm leaving the big
- 36:13question of evolution till the next talk
- 36:16because that's a biggie especially if
- 36:18man is included in it what I've tried to
- 36:20do here is to show you that we
- 36:23interpreters of the Bible need to be a
- 36:26little more flexible
- 36:27sometimes and say we may not have
- 36:28understood it
- 36:30right and I believe scientists need to
- 36:33be a bit more humble but many of them
- 36:35are becoming more humble as they
- 36:37discover the random principle in nature
- 36:41that everything isn't neatly tied up in
- 36:43laws of cause and effect and science is
- 36:45becoming much more flexible so that
- 36:48recently there was an article in my
- 36:49morning
- 36:50newspaper entitled is science about to
- 36:54prove the existence of God
- 36:57an amazing title to read a 100 years ago
- 36:59you would have read
- 37:01disprove but now there's been a swing
- 37:04round to a universe that is more open to
- 37:07personal intervention and control by God
- 37:10than it was before so that science and
- 37:12scripture in our day are beginning to
- 37:15move together again that's all to the
- 37:17good I believe the third way that I
- 37:20showed you of reconciling signs in
- 37:22scripture to integrate them is necessary
- 37:26because both scientists and scripture
- 37:28are concerned with
- 37:29truth we are all committed to the truth
- 37:33and we want to find it out and I believe
- 37:36science has found out a lot of truth
- 37:38about our universe for us but it has not
- 37:41been able to tell us the most important
- 37:43truths either about God or about
- 37:46ourselves for that we have scripture and
- 37:49thank God we
- 37:55have
