  1. 0:00I used to think power came from more
  2. 0:02air, more volume and effort. And with
  3. 0:04that came vocal strain and a forced tone
  4. 0:08until I learned these five simple yet
  5. 0:10powerful exercises. We'll cover breath
  6. 0:12support, chest voice strength, forward
  7. 0:15resonance, and two secret vocal
  8. 0:17exercises that will give you an instant
  9. 0:20power boost with no extra effort. Hi,
  10. 0:22I'm Ian. I've taught thousands of
  11. 0:24singing lessons. And by the end of this
  12. 0:26video, you'll not only feel more
  13. 0:28powerful, you'll understand why it's
  14. 0:31working and how to keep building from
  15. 0:33here with a daily vocal power workout.
  16. 0:36When people think powerful voice, they
  17. 0:39picture someone belting it out and
  18. 0:41rattling the walls, right? But here's
  19. 0:43the truth. Real power doesn't come from
  20. 0:46pushing. It comes from coordination. How
  21. 0:49your breath, vocal folds, and resonance
  22. 0:52work together. And when they don't work
  23. 0:54together, that's when you feel stuck,
  24. 0:57strained, or breathy. Now, let's fix
  25. 0:59that. We're going to start at the
  26. 1:01source, your breath. When I was a
  27. 1:03beginner singer, I used to breathe like
  28. 1:05this, shallow and high, when we actually
  29. 1:09need to do this,
  30. 1:11low and wide. Now, I want you to breathe
  31. 1:13in through your nose and let your belly
  32. 1:16and lower ribs expand like an umbrella.
  33. 1:18And don't let your shoulders rise. Put
  34. 1:21your hands just under your ribs. You
  35. 1:23should feel expansion sideways.
  36. 1:27Next, exhale on four short t sounds
  37. 1:31followed by a steady hiss for 10 seconds
  38. 1:33while keeping your ribs expanded. This
  39. 1:36activates breath support, also called a
  40. 1:38pod jaw, which you can learn about more
  41. 1:40up here. All right, let's try it
  42. 1:42together. Inhale. 2 3 4.
  43. 1:56Now, think of this as turning your
  44. 1:58breath into pressurized air, like a tank
  45. 2:02powering a fire hose. This is your vocal
  46. 2:04fuel. You can do all the exercises in
  47. 2:07the world, but if you neglect breath
  48. 2:08support, you will limit your potential.
  49. 2:11Next, let's build the foundation of a
  50. 2:13powerful voice. Chest voice.
  51. 2:17Say goodday like you're trying to get
  52. 2:19someone's attention across the room or
  53. 2:21the internet. Goodday. Good day. Good
  54. 2:24day. I'm Ian. Okay. Now try singing a
  55. 2:27short note pattern on G like this. GG
  56. 2:31GG.
  57. 2:33Now try it with me in a comfortable
  58. 2:34speaking range. It's important that you
  59. 2:36don't take chest voice too high as it
  60. 2:38can cause issues later on with higher
  61. 2:40notes. The goal of the exercise is to
  62. 2:43experience a full powerful tone. Place
  63. 2:45your hand on your chest and sing with
  64. 2:47me. 2 3 4 G-g
  65. 2:53[Music]
  66. 2:56G-g.
  67. 2:59[Music]
  68. 3:14Feel that vibration in your chest.
  69. 3:17That's your power source. This is not
  70. 3:19about yelling. It's about connecting
  71. 3:21your speaking voice to your singing
  72. 3:23voice with support. Now, if you want a
  73. 3:26free guided MP3 version of the exercises
  74. 3:29in this video, click on the link below.
  75. 3:31Okay. Let's add cutting power with
  76. 3:34something called twang. This is how
  77. 3:36singers get that bright, powerful edge
  78. 3:39to their voice without shouting. Say
  79. 3:42this
  80. 3:45like a bratty cartoon villain.
  81. 3:49Now sing it on a 531 scale like this.
  82. 3:55This narrows part of your throat for a
  83. 3:57frequency boost. You'll sound louder
  84. 3:59without actually getting louder. Let's
  85. 4:02try a few together. 2 3 4y
  86. 4:093 4y
  87. 4:142 3 4y
  88. 4:192 3 4y
  89. 4:23twang equals acoustic leverage. You get
  90. 4:26more voice for less effort. Do you ever
  91. 4:28hear a singer cut through a loud band
  92. 4:31even without sounding like they're
  93. 4:33trying? Well, you're hearing the
  94. 4:35singer's formant. And well, what is
  95. 4:38that? It's a special boost around the
  96. 4:412.5 to 3.5 kHz, a resonant ring that
  97. 4:45makes your voice carry. Opera singers
  98. 4:47rely on it. Rock singers use a version
  99. 4:49of it, too. All right, let's do an
  100. 4:51exercise together. Start on an NG hum.
  101. 4:57Now you feel that face buzz. Now open
  102. 4:59into an R without losing the buzz.
  103. 5:05You're learning to tune your resonance
  104. 5:07so your voice rings without needing more
  105. 5:10volume. That's the secret pros know. And
  106. 5:13now so do you. Okay, let's bring
  107. 5:15everything together. Support, resonance,
  108. 5:18twang, and vocal cord efficiency into a
  109. 5:20realworld phrase. I want you to say, "I
  110. 5:24can feel it now." With intention. I can
  111. 5:27feel it now. Now, sing it on a strong
  112. 5:30pitch. We'll choose a G3 using your new
  113. 5:32coordination.
  114. 5:35I can feel it now.
  115. 5:41All right. Now, try sustaining the word
  116. 5:43feel for 3 seconds. Support from your
  117. 5:46breath. Keep your buzz in your face. And
  118. 5:48a bit of twang for the ring. I can feel
  119. 5:55it now.
  120. 5:59Now, we're going to supercharge your
  121. 6:01vocal efficiency with a modern secret
  122. 6:04weapon, straw phonation. I want you to
  123. 6:07grab a straw in a glass of water like
  124. 6:09this. Now, place a straw in the water
  125. 6:12and blow bubbles while phonating, making
  126. 6:14a sound on ooh.
  127. 6:18Keep your sound supported and make a
  128. 6:20steady stream of bubbles.
  129. 6:25Now, here's a quick tip. If you put too
  130. 6:27much water in the glass, you're going to
  131. 6:29end up wearing it. So, try it with me.
  132. 6:31Blow into the straw and sustain a pitch
  133. 6:34like this.
  134. 6:38This is called a semioluded vocal tract
  135. 6:41exercise. It creates back pressure that
  136. 6:44helps your vocal cords close more
  137. 6:46efficiently while relaxing throat
  138. 6:49tension. Now, do this for 3 to 5 minutes
  139. 6:51a day and you'll start feeling power
  140. 6:54come from resonance and efficiency and
  141. 6:56not strain. You can use straw phonation
  142. 6:59to supercharge vocal exercises. I'm
  143. 7:02going to show you that right now during
  144. 7:03the power workout. As promised, here is
  145. 7:06your 10minute daily power workout. If
  146. 7:10you want this as a downloadable MP3,
  147. 7:12click on the link below to get access.
  148. 7:14Now, I attempted to do all of this in
  149. 7:16one take, holding the glass and straw
  150. 7:19while playing the piano, and I failed
  151. 7:22miserably. So, I pre-recorded the
  152. 7:24workout so I can follow along with you.
  153. 7:27This is the MP3 that you can download if
  154. 7:30you want it. Here we go. Good day, Ian
  155. 7:32Castle here, your Aussie vocal coach,
  156. 7:34and this is the quick vocal power
  157. 7:36workout. The five exercises in this
  158. 7:39daily routine will activate your breath
  159. 7:41support and help you develop a strong
  160. 7:44resonant voice without strain, force or
  161. 7:47excess effort. Exercise one, breath
  162. 7:50support using apojo. Inhale for 4
  163. 7:54seconds through your nose, feeling your
  164. 7:56ribs and stomach expand, and then exhale
  165. 7:59on four short t sounds to engage your
  166. 8:03diaphragm. Complete the exercise with a
  167. 8:06long
  168. 8:08to develop breath management. Relax and
  169. 8:11don't let your ribs and chest collapse.
  170. 8:14Let's go. Breathe in. 2 3 4
  171. 8:20T
  172. 8:221 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. And relax. Let's
  173. 8:32do it two more times. Breathe in. 2 3 4
  174. 8:421 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. Okay, last time.
  175. 8:53Breathe in. 2 3 4
  176. 8:57T
  177. 9:001 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. Okay, grab your
  178. 9:10water and straw. Let's supercharge this
  179. 9:13workout.
  180. 9:15Exercise two, chest voice power. We are
  181. 9:19going to sing a G over a 1 3 531 pattern
  182. 9:24in combination with straw phonation. I'm
  183. 9:27going to play each note pattern twice.
  184. 9:29Use your straw for the first round and
  185. 9:32the G on the repeat. By incorporating
  186. 9:35the straw phonation, we are developing
  187. 9:38chord closure and muscle memory. Here we
  188. 9:41go.
  189. 9:422 3 4

  205. 11:14develops brightness and focus in your
  206. 11:17voice. We will sing the ny on a
  207. 11:20descending 531 pattern in combination
  208. 11:23with straw phonation to build strength
  209. 11:25and power. Remember to support your
  210. 11:28voice with expanded ribs during the
  211. 11:30exercise.
