- 0:00Did you know that what we know as Spain
- 0:02today was once divided into several
- 0:04rival kingdoms? And that it was two
- 0:07young people, Isabella of the Kingdom
- 0:09of Castile and Ferdinand of the Kingdom
- 0:12of Aragon, who managed to unite those
- 0:14lands and form the foundation of what
- 0:16would become the great Spanish Empire?
- 0:19On the Iberian Peninsula, what we call
- 0:21Spain today, there were different
- 0:24kingdoms: Castile, Aragon, Navarre, and
- 0:27the Muslim Kingdom of Granada. Each one
- 0:30had its own government, army, and
- 0:33interests. Can you imagine if every
- 0:36state in Mexico were an independent
- 0:38country today with its own laws and
- 0:40borders? Well, that’s what Spain was
- 0:43like back then. Isabella was born in
- 0:46Castile and Ferdinand in Aragon. They
- 0:48married in secret in 1469 at just 17
- 0:52and 18 years old. They were not in love
- 0:56. Ferdinand would serenade her at the
- 0:58foot of her balcony. Their marriage was
- 1:02strategic. It united two powerful
- 1:05kingdoms and strengthened the peninsula
- 1:07against external enemies. Pope
- 1:10Alexander VI gave them the title of
- 1:12Catholic Monarchs. It was for their
- 1:14defense of Christianity. During their
- 1:17reign, they expelled the Muslims from
- 1:19their last stronghold in Granada in
- 1:211492. They had created the Kingdom of
- 1:25Al-Andalus on the Iberian Peninsula.
- 1:28The monarchs also limited the Jewish
- 1:30presence; they wanted to unify the
- 1:32Catholic faith as part of their
- 1:34kingdom's identity. All citizens had to
- 1:38practice the same religion regardless
- 1:40of their differences. To strengthen
- 1:44unity, the Catholic Monarchs also
- 1:46supported Christopher Columbus in his
- 1:48project to reach Asia by circling the
- 1:50globe. Like and follow me so I can tell
- 1:54you about that episode in history.
- 1:57Their gamble paved the way for the
- 1:59discovery of America, an event that
- 2:02would change world history forever. The
- 2:05Catholic Monarchs didn't just unite
- 2:08kingdoms; they also ushered in a new
- 2:10era: the birth of Spain as a world
- 2:12power. In the next video, we will see
- 2:16how Christopher Columbus convinced
- 2:17these monarchs to fund his risky
- 2:19expedition. Do you want to find out
- 2:22with me? Answer the following questions
- 2:25in your notebook. Comprehension
- 2:28questions. Who were the Catholic
- 2:30Monarchs? Which kingdoms did Isabella
- 2:32and Ferdinand unite through their
- 2:33marriage? Why did the Pope give them
- 2:36the title of Catholic Monarchs? How did
- 2:42the union of Castile and Aragon
- 2:43strengthen the Iberian Peninsula? Why
- 2:46was the fall of Granada in 1492
- 2:48important? What were the consequences
- 2:52of the Catholic Monarchs 'support for
- 2:54Christopher Columbus? Do you think the
- 3:00decision to unify the religion
- 3:01strengthened Spain or brought more
- 3:03problems? Explain your answer. M.
