  1. 0:02well we've all been speaking about the
  2. 0:05baby boomers Gen X and Y's Millennials
  3. 0:09all that right very familiar well let me
  4. 0:12tell you it's familiar it actually does
  5. 0:15not explain what's happening globally
  6. 0:19let's begin by realized the only about
  7. 0:21one-third of the planet ever had a baby
  8. 0:24boom to begin with we'll take baby poops
  9. 0:26for granted but two-thirds of the world
  10. 0:29never had one and I bet you've heard
  11. 0:33something like this before right
  12. 0:34children now love luxury they have bad
  13. 0:37manners
  14. 0:38come temporal Authority and they show
  15. 0:41this respect for all the people they
  16. 0:43love gossip and they don't like activity
  17. 0:46her dad yeah well guess what that was
  18. 0:51sent by Socrates 2,400 years ago okay so
  19. 0:57a generation gap is nothing new as a
  20. 1:00rapper to be amazing it how consistent
  21. 1:02the opinions have into the thousands of
  22. 1:04years you know that's really surprising
  23. 1:05but it's nothing new would so what we're
  24. 1:08living right now is not your average
  25. 1:10generational gap it is not created by
  26. 1:13generations range what we're going
  27. 1:17through is created by the incredible
  28. 1:19autumn unprecedent leap in technology
  29. 1:22we've created in the last 30 years that
  30. 1:25never been seen before in human history
  31. 1:27and that is coming right back and
  32. 1:30shaping afters humans that's what it
  33. 1:33really meant the key it's the the big
  34. 1:37difference is digital immigrants and
  35. 1:40digital natives that's tough happening
  36. 1:43right now digital immigrants are people
  37. 1:46like my talk of who were born waiting
  38. 1:48for the web and we spend a lot of our
  39. 1:50life without any virtual environments we
  40. 1:52had to migrate into them now digital
  41. 1:56natives are people like my 13 year old
  42. 1:58son who were born with those virtual
  43. 2:01environments and for them it's like
  44. 2:02that's where it is drew was sitting you
  45. 2:05know this is valid for
  46. 2:07which is correct so we are actually
  47. 2:10seeing right now it's not really a
  48. 2:14generational gap which has always
  49. 2:15existed there's always been a
  50. 2:17generational gap what we're seeing is
  51. 2:21actually a generational break on
  52. 2:25fundamentals had existed for thousands
  53. 2:27of years like the concept of community
  54. 2:31for thousands of years community has
  55. 2:34been a physical concept you want to be
  56. 2:38with your community and all of a sudden
  57. 2:41less than two generations it has become
  58. 2:43a virtual concept your community goes
  59. 2:47with you wherever you go and it's all
  60. 2:50mine that's what's really happening and
  61. 2:53that can't break it's happening in how
  62. 2:55the work how we see communication how we
  63. 2:59see ourselves and how is the world in
  64. 3:02general it's all changing all coming new
  65. 3:07fundamentals okay that's where it's at
  66. 3:12and it's the time to ask ourselves how
  67. 3:17those breaks taking us where we should
  68. 3:19be going
  69. 3:20are those breaks in from the metals
  70. 3:22leading to a positive place companies
  71. 3:28expected you know all the IT staff to
  72. 3:32make us more productive more active
  73. 3:35right well guess what there's nothing
  74. 3:37called a solo paradox that has analyzed
  75. 3:42a very strange phenomenon from 1939 to
  76. 3:45the year 2000 the average annual
  77. 3:48increase in individual productivity in
  78. 3:50the US was 0.7% per year from the year
  79. 3:542000 um that wasn't crashing down 2.9
  80. 3:57percent per year and the only
  81. 4:00correlation they've been able to find is
  82. 4:02the intensive use of ITT so now don't
  83. 4:09get me wrong I love technology I like it
  84. 4:12I like it very much I do a lot of my
  85. 4:15work online and you know it saves me a
  86. 4:18lot of time and a lot of effort
  87. 4:20but here's the thing I use technology
  88. 4:23I'd never let technology gives me it's a
  89. 4:27mindful using technology so when you're
  90. 4:32faced with new technologies or any kind
  91. 4:34of technology ask yourself is this
  92. 4:36technology making me barek physically is
  93. 4:39it making you better emotionally is it
  94. 4:41making me better intellectually is it
  95. 4:44making me better professionally if the
  96. 4:47answer is no but it's really fun well
  97. 4:51look at it like I don't know like you
  98. 4:53would look at the killer or cake are
  99. 4:57really fun and really great but if you
  100. 4:59have too much of it not gonna be good
  101. 5:01for you so that it's mindful use of
  102. 5:06technology I've been helping
  103. 5:07organizations for over 15 years of my
  104. 5:10life achieve that kind of mindful use of
  105. 5:13technology and I can attest personally
  106. 5:15how what a big incredible change it
  107. 5:18makes in the quality of work and of life
  108. 5:21for people really we humans have a
  109. 5:26tendency to give more importance and
  110. 5:29preeminence to some of the things we
  111. 5:31create than to ourselves witness how
  112. 5:34many cities here in the US how many
  113. 5:36suburbs I created for the car but for
  114. 5:38people but just try to get without a car
  115. 5:43so we cannot know that I had the
  116. 5:46privilege of studying Kendall which is
  117. 5:49the Japanese art of the sport with an
  118. 5:51amazing teacher tak Pico sail sail
  119. 5:54he came from an image of over 500 years
  120. 5:57of samurai family this beautiful amazing
  121. 6:01katana 300 years old and one day I still
  122. 6:05remember in one of the classics we were
  123. 6:07having he pointed to his sword and said
  124. 6:09you know I could let you have my sword
  125. 6:11which he would never do that and I could
  126. 6:15take a booster a broomstick and beat you
  127. 6:17like a second flat yes she yeah we
  128. 6:21believed him and he said something he
  129. 6:23said remember that the most important
  130. 6:25thing is never the sword it is the
  131. 6:28person wheels it so this is the time
  132. 6:32to really ask ourselves starting an
  133. 6:36earth in conversation about what kind of
  134. 6:40new fundamentals will be creating and
  135. 6:42about making really sure that those new
  136. 6:45fundamentals leaders to create and
  137. 6:48develop better humans and very portly
  138. 6:51better communities
  139. 6:55[Applause]
