Understanding the Mass as Biblical: A Walk-Thru (Part 1) - Explaining the Faith — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:16Well, thank you again everybody for
- 0:18joining us. I'm Father Chris Alar from
- 0:21the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy
- 0:23in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
- 0:26It is an honor to be back here in
- 0:28Westlake. I was here a few years ago. I
- 0:31know Father Mike Gaitley, Father Don
- 0:32Calloway, and others have been here. So,
- 0:34this is an honor for me to be back. Now,
- 0:38what are we talking about today? We are
- 0:40talking about the Catholic Mass.
- 0:44And in the Catholic Mass
- 0:46we have everything.
- 0:49Everything. People say, "Well, Father,
- 0:51I'm not going to Mass because I don't
- 0:53get anything out of it."
- 0:55You can't get anything more out of the
- 0:59Mass. People say, "Well, Father, and I
- 1:01have friends and family, one of my my
- 1:04own relatives go into these
- 1:05non-denominational churches because
- 1:08the pastor rides unicycle and juggles."
- 1:13The Mass is not about your
- 1:15entertainment.
- 1:17The Mass is about worship.
- 1:20And what's important about worship
- 1:24is it's actually a virtue.
- 1:26To get to heaven, we need to grow in
- 1:28virtue.
- 1:29Religion falls under the virtue of
- 1:33justice.
- 1:35Why?
- 1:36Because justice is not eye for an eye,
- 1:39tooth for a tooth.
- 1:40Justice is giving someone their due.
- 1:45And what God is due is our worship.
- 1:50And so, when we go to Mass we're giving
- 1:53God his due.
- 1:55He's due worship. We come to Mass to
- 1:58give it. And this is why religion falls
- 2:03under the virtue of justice. And this is
- 2:06important and people will "Oh, Father,
- 2:09I'm not religious. I'm spiritual." Y'all
- 2:13heard that, right? Well, remember say to
- 2:16them in return, "Really?
- 2:18You're not into organized religion?"
- 2:22"No. No, I'm not." That's too bad
- 2:26because Jesus organized religion.
- 2:32Jesus organized religion. He established
- 2:36the college of bishops. He ordained the
- 2:38first bishops in the apostles. Gave them
- 2:41the authority to forgive sin and to
- 2:43ordain the next priest. There's
- 2:45apostolic installed apostolic
- 2:47succession. He established the throne of
- 2:51the papacy and put Peter upon that
- 2:53throne. Gave us the magisterium.
- 2:57Established the church. Gave us the
- 2:59sacraments.
- 3:01And yet you're not into organized
- 3:03religion.
- 3:04Jesus was into organized religion. This
- 3:08Mass
- 3:09from start to finish is biblical.
- 3:13Do you know there is more scripture in
- 3:15one Catholic weekday Mass than any
- 3:19Sunday Protestant service, period?
- 3:24More. And this is what we're going to
- 3:26talk about today. All right.
- 3:29"Where two or three are gathered
- 3:31together in my name, I am there in their
- 3:34midst."
- 3:35The words of Jesus.
- 3:37We have a lot more. We have over 700
- 3:40registered today.
- 3:41We have a lot more people than two or
- 3:44three.
- 3:45And we are gathered in his name. So, the
- 3:48Mass is an encounter between God and man
- 3:51but not just in prayer.
- 3:54Word,
- 3:56gestures, symbols, they are all used to
- 4:00result in grace.
- 4:02Why?
- 4:03Because we are not just spirits.
- 4:06You go to these other worship services,
- 4:09they don't engage the body.
- 4:11"Oh, you Catholics, you're just about
- 4:13stand, sit, kneel."
- 4:16There's a purpose for that. Because
- 4:18we're not just spirit. We are body and
- 4:22spirit. We are a composite. This is
- 4:25important. We engage not just our spirit
- 4:28in prayer but our body. Now, let's talk
- 4:30about stand, sit, kneel.
- 4:33First of all, why do we stand?
- 4:36We stand because standing in the Mass is
- 4:39a sign of respect. This is very
- 4:41important. Why do we kneel?
- 4:43We kneel in humility.
- 4:46Make ourselves small. God is big.
- 4:50So, we kneel.
- 4:51What about sit?
- 4:54We sit in receptive position. Why are
- 4:58you all sitting right now?
- 5:00Because you're receiving this message.
- 5:03So, there's a reason we do this. All
- 5:05right. What about genuflection, you
- 5:07crazy Catholics?
- 5:09You know, I'm so used to genuflecting I
- 5:10was in the Mormon Tabernacle choir the
- 5:14other day cuz I was doing a talk in Salt
- 5:16Lake City and I went in and I
- 5:17automatically genuflected.
- 5:20I'm like, "No, you're not supposed to do
- 5:22that."
- 5:23Now, why do we genuflect?
- 5:26Because genuflection is a sign of
- 5:28adoration.
- 5:30Now, when do you genuflect?
- 5:34Can anybody tell me when you genuflect?
- 5:37All right. When you cross in front of
- 5:40the Blessed Sacrament. Right?
- 5:43Now, what if you're walking before the
- 5:45altar? Do you genuflect?
- 5:47No.
- 5:50You do a bow in reverence.
- 5:52When you walk in front of a crucifix, do
- 5:55you genuflect?
- 5:58If it's Good Friday.
- 6:01You genuflect before the crucifix on
- 6:04Good Friday.
- 6:06So, you see we have a reason here.
- 6:08Otherwise, the same thing we do a bow to
- 6:10show reverence in honor. What about the
- 6:13names of Jesus and Mary?
- 6:16If you see a priest and he's reading
- 6:18from the scriptures, a good priest does
- 6:19what?
- 6:20At the name of Jesus or Mary, he does
- 6:23a slight head bow. This is why it's so
- 6:26important not to use their names in
- 6:28vain.
- 6:29The name of God is so holy that the the
- 6:31Israelites, the the Jews didn't even say
- 6:33it, let alone irreverently. All right.
- 6:37What about singing?
- 6:39Is singing
- 6:41something I don't like singing, Father,
- 6:43I'm no good at it. Well, okay.
- 6:45Singing unites
- 6:47your personal prayer with the communal
- 6:50prayer. It's very important. Do you know
- 6:52Jesus sang on his way to the Passion?
- 6:55Jesus did.
- 6:57That'd be pretty hard, wouldn't it?
- 7:00Think amazing how our Lord was to sing
- 7:02on his way to his Passion.
- 7:04What about um
- 7:06the rest of the Mass? You are coming to
- 7:08participate.
- 7:10Singing's a good way to do this.
- 7:12Now, it doesn't mean it has to be in
- 7:14tune.
- 7:16All right.
- 7:17If God didn't give you a good voice,
- 7:20give it back to him.
- 7:25I do that all the time.
- 7:27I do it all the time.
- 7:32But when we sing, we unite with the
- 7:34heavenly choir. This is important. Now,
- 7:38what about the flip side? Silence.
- 7:41What about silence? Silence can mean
- 7:44more than words. Silence is very
- 7:46important. It gets us prepared, right?
- 7:49But words are powerful, so is silence.
- 7:52In fact, what are the most important
- 7:54words St. Joseph ever spoke in
- 7:55scripture?
- 7:57Nothing.
- 8:00Father Don Calloway has that book out
- 8:02right now, Consecration to St. Joseph.
- 8:03We can't keep it in stock
- 8:06because St. Joseph is such a powerful
- 8:08tool, especially against the evil one.
- 8:11But he never spoke a word. Maybe not
- 8:14ever, but in scripture.
- 8:16In scripture. A lot of ladies are
- 8:18saying, "Now, that's the ultimate
- 8:19husband."
- 8:21All right. All right.
- 8:24So, the Mass is all of this.
- 8:27This is the Mass. Now,
- 8:31the very nature of the Mass
- 8:34is sacrificial.
- 8:36But here's what's important.
- 8:38Not until the 1500s
- 8:42did the Protestants begin to reject the
- 8:45idea of a sacrificial Mass
- 8:49and they replaced it
- 8:51with ceremonies focused just on prayer
- 8:54and song.
- 8:56When you lose the sacrificial meaning of
- 8:59the Mass you've lost something
- 9:02important.
- 9:04Now,
- 9:05I want to address this thing going on in
- 9:07the church between modernists and
- 9:09traditionalists. Do you know what I
- 9:10mean?
- 9:11The modernists, post-Vatican II, "Oh,
- 9:14don't give me that Latin Mass stuff."
- 9:16And then you got the traditionalists,
- 9:18pre-Vatican II, that are all about
- 9:21saying
- 9:22the new Mass is invalid.
- 9:26You're both wrong
- 9:29but you both have a point.
- 9:31I was just given a missal before I came
- 9:33up here. I was going to start to do this
- 9:35talk, but it was the 1962 missal.
- 9:39I can't do my talk that I want to do
- 9:40from the 62 missal, but does that mean
- 9:42it's not a good missal? No.
- 9:46It's very important that we realize
- 9:47there are two forms of the Mass, the
- 9:49extraordinary form and the ordinary
- 9:52form.
- 9:53The extraordinary form or the Tridentine
- 9:55Mass or or the Latin Mass it is just as
- 9:58valid. We are allowed to celebrate it.
- 10:01But those who are are focused on the
- 10:03Novus Ordo Mass should not criticize the
- 10:06traditional form and vice versa.
- 10:09The traditionalist should not criticize
- 10:11the new form of the Mass, the Novus
- 10:12Ordo. Both are valid, filled with
- 10:15infinite grace. Now, here's what's
- 10:18important to remember.
- 10:20Traditionalists,
- 10:22God bless you.
- 10:24But I've met a lot of you and you've
- 10:26said to me,
- 10:27"Father, people in the 1500s
- 10:30would not recognize the Mass today."
- 10:34Ugh.
- 10:38Is that true?
- 10:39Would people in the 1500s not recognize
- 10:43our Mass today?
- 10:46Yes.
- 10:47It's very true because it's very
- 10:49different. But here's what they fail to
- 10:51see.
- 10:52While the people in the 1500s might not
- 10:55recognize our Mass today,
- 10:57the people in the 700s would.
- 11:01This Mass that we celebrate today is
- 11:03actually, even in a way, more ancient
- 11:07than the Tridentine Extraordinary Form
- 11:09Mass.
- 11:11We went back to the ancient
- 11:12Sacramentary.
- 11:13Some of the prayers that are pulled out.
- 11:16People from the 700s would recognize
- 11:18what we do today because it's going back
- 11:20to the Mass being a sacrifice and a
- 11:23meal.
- 11:25You see, the problem is the Tridentine
- 11:27Mass was not the first form of the Mass.
- 11:30People keep thinking that that was the
- 11:31first form of the Mass. No, it wasn't.
- 11:34No, it wasn't. The Ordinary Form is
- 11:36actually more traditional.
- 11:39But does that mean that the the
- 11:41Extraordinary Form isn't good? Of course
- 11:42not. It's wonderful and I think it is
- 11:44very reverent.
- 11:46I hope to learn to celebrate it someday.
- 11:49So, we can't criticize either form.
- 11:53You see, the traditional form of the
- 11:55Mass is beautiful, but even before that,
- 11:58we had the Mass similar to the way that
- 11:59we have it today.
- 12:02The problem is throughout history, we
- 12:04either swayed on one side or the other.
- 12:07Back when Christ set up the Mass, it was
- 12:08both a sacrifice and a meal.
- 12:11It was both.
- 12:13Now, as time went on, it became just a
- 12:16meal.
- 12:18Then the traditionalists got upset and
- 12:20in the Tridentine form, they brought
- 12:21back just the sacrifice.
- 12:23But now we're trying to get back to it's
- 12:25also a meal. So, we constantly have to
- 12:27realize that it's both.
- 12:30This is important. All right.
- 12:32Now, let's start with the Mass now. I'm
- 12:35going to walk you through this.
- 12:37When does the Mass begin?
- 12:42The procession? Good. No.
- 12:46When does the Mass begin?
- 12:48Name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit?
- 12:50Good. No.
- 12:53When does the Mass begin?
- 12:57The
- 12:58introductory right? Good. No.
- 13:02When we stand? Good. If you're talking
- 13:04about at home getting ready to come
- 13:06here.
- 13:08The Mass begins in your heart.
- 13:11Aw.
- 13:14The Mass begins in your heart. You have
- 13:18to open your heart to receive this grace
- 13:21given by God.
- 13:23This is what people don't realize. I
- 13:25remember as a kid riding to to church
- 13:27and my dad and mom would be arguing.
- 13:30Then I remember my dad's a tough Marine,
- 13:32Vietnam Marine, flew helicopters out of
- 13:34Da Nang.
- 13:35And I remember one time
- 13:37getting to Mass, he gets in a fight with
- 13:39a guy in the parking lot.
- 13:42It's like, come on, we're missing the
- 13:43point here.
- 13:45All right. Now, once we get to Mass, we
- 13:48begin with the very first part of the
- 13:49Mass. The very first part of the Mass is
- 13:52called the introductory right.
- 13:54This is the first part of the Mass. Now,
- 13:57in it, we do either an opening song or
- 14:01an entrance antiphon.
- 14:03Right? Now, singing, as I said, brings
- 14:06us unity as community with one voice.
- 14:11Now,
- 14:13I remember when I was in
- 14:15the seminary,
- 14:16Father Larry, God bless his soul,
- 14:19said to me after one day I led the
- 14:21singing, he said, "You know, Brother
- 14:23Chris,
- 14:24you really shouldn't sing."
- 14:28And I said, "Father Larry,
- 14:31Augustine says to sing is to pray
- 14:34twice."
- 14:37And Father Larry says, "Brother Chris,
- 14:40Saint Augustine said to sing well is to
- 14:43pray twice."
- 14:47And so,
- 14:50I said, "Okay, Father Larry, but I go
- 14:52back to that if God didn't give you a
- 14:54good voice, give it back to him." We
- 14:56should still try our best to sing. Okay.
- 14:59So, with the song, the priest and the
- 15:01and the other members of the Mass, the
- 15:03clergy or or anybody who's involved in
- 15:05the Mass, the lectors sometimes, come
- 15:07forward. The priest comes up forward and
- 15:10he does what is the first thing the
- 15:12priest does up here?
- 15:15Venerates the altar. Why do we do that?
- 15:19The table, excuse me. This altar
- 15:23is both a table
- 15:25and a cross.
- 15:28Meaning, it's a table for a meal by
- 15:31which we will gather around as a family
- 15:34and it is an altar that is a cross for
- 15:38sacrifice. So, this altar is both a
- 15:41table for a meal and a cross for a
- 15:43sacrifice.
- 15:45Both are in this Mass. Now, what's the
- 15:48first thing the priest does?
- 15:52In the name of the Father, and of the
- 15:55Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This comes
- 15:58after the opening song or the entrance
- 16:00antiphon. Now,
- 16:02we as Catholics are always criticized.
- 16:04"Oh, Father, Son, Holy Spirit." And I
- 16:06see people come in the church, I'll tell
- 16:07them, "In the Father, Son, Holy Spirit."
- 16:09I begin the Mass, "In the name of the
- 16:10Father, Son, Holy Spirit."
- 16:12Do you realize what you're doing?
- 16:15We sign ourselves because we're body and
- 16:18spirit.
- 16:20And when we do this, in the name of the
- 16:23Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
- 16:25Spirit,
- 16:26we name God as the reason we are here.
- 16:31We are naming him as the reason we are
- 16:33here. Now,
- 16:35we also
- 16:37do something in this gesture. Do we have
- 16:40any cowboys here? We're in Texas.
- 16:43Do we have any cowboys?
- 16:45What do cowboys do with their cattle?
- 16:50They brand them.
- 16:52Why do they brand them?
- 16:55So that they have a mark. I belong to
- 16:58this rancher.
- 17:00When you do this, in the name of the
- 17:02Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
- 17:04Spirit, we are marking ourselves like
- 17:07branding
- 17:08to show that we belong to God.
- 17:13We are marking our soul. We belong to
- 17:15God.
- 17:17This is to show who we belong to.
- 17:20Holy water.
- 17:22Do you not put your finger in the holy
- 17:24water before you do that?
- 17:25You do that because it reminds us of our
- 17:27baptism. We become one with Christ for
- 17:31this celebration.
- 17:33So, we baptize ourselves in a way or
- 17:35holy water like baptism. Now, after I
- 17:38say the name of the Father, Son, Holy
- 17:40Spirit, what do you say?
- 17:42Amen.
- 17:44What does that mean?
- 17:46I believe.
- 17:48So, you are saying I believe. The priest
- 17:51leads in prayer, but he's not praying
- 17:53without you.
- 17:55You are praying with him. The amen makes
- 17:57it your prayer, too.
- 17:59Now, what happens next is the greeting.
- 18:03The priest hands up in the traditional
- 18:05Jewish form of prayer,
- 18:07says, "The Lord be with you."
- 18:10And that means that we're establishing
- 18:12that God is present. He is here.
- 18:15So, I say, "The Lord be with you." I'm
- 18:18saying the Lord is here. He's in your
- 18:20presence. And what do you say?
- 18:24"And with your spirit." Just something
- 18:26the church made up, right? No,
- 18:28scriptural. This is from 2 Timothy 4:22.
- 18:32"The Lord be with your spirit."
- 18:35Everything in this Mass is scriptural.
- 18:38Everything. Yes, he is here and I
- 18:40acknowledge it. God is here.
- 18:43You don't know all this is going on.
- 18:45All right. We say the same thing, "The
- 18:48Lord be with you." "And with your
- 18:50spirit." in all the parts of the Mass.
- 18:53And we'll get to them as we go along.
- 18:55All the parts of the Mass, this is
- 18:57repeated. That's how important it is.
- 19:00Now,
- 19:01after this, the priest moves on to what
- 19:04part of the Mass?
- 19:08Penitential right.
- 19:10Very important. Why?
- 19:13Okay.
- 19:15When you go to confession,
- 19:18do you have to confess every single sin
- 19:21you can remember?
- 19:23No.
- 19:29Why?
- 19:31Let me finish.
- 19:33There's a couple reasons. First of all,
- 19:36if you really did do that, you'd be in
- 19:38the confessional all day long.
- 19:42Secondly, the church teaches we are
- 19:44required to confess all grave sins that
- 19:48we can remember.
- 19:50All grave sins that we can remember.
- 19:53Does that mean you shouldn't confess the
- 19:54little venial sins? No, it's a good
- 19:57habit. But should you kill yourself if
- 19:59you are saying I gosh, I forgot one?
- 20:02Call me at 2:00 in the morning to wake
- 20:04me up so that I can hear your confession
- 20:06because you forgot to confess you ate
- 20:08the last piece of pizza.
- 20:10Okay? No. The reason we don't but it's a
- 20:14good habit if you want to, that's fine.
- 20:16I'm not discouraging it.
- 20:17But the reason is why? Where are your
- 20:20venial sins forgiven?
- 20:23In the mass.
- 20:25In the penitential right. So if you've
- 20:27been to confession for your grave sins
- 20:30and then you come to mass and you make
- 20:31it before the penitential right
- 20:34your sins are completely forgiven and
- 20:37you are spotless from head to toe. You
- 20:40are completely cleansed.
- 20:42This is why Martin Luther left the
- 20:43church. He was a Catholic priest. He
- 20:46didn't leave the church because people
- 20:47always say we sold indulgences. Martin
- 20:49Luther left the church because he
- 20:51couldn't belong to a religion that said
- 20:53if he didn't confess every single sin he
- 20:55was going to hell because he wasn't
- 20:56forgiven. That's not what the church
- 20:58teaches. If you honestly forget a sin
- 21:01you are forgiven and even your venial
- 21:03sins if you don't confess are forgiven
- 21:05in the mass.
- 21:06Confession of grave sins is mandatory.
- 21:09All right. So
- 21:11this is very important. Now in the
- 21:13penitential right it's not to remind God
- 21:16of our sins, he already knows them
- 21:19but for us to see our need for his
- 21:21mercy.
- 21:23Right? Now
- 21:25in it we have what? There are many
- 21:27examples of the penitential right. The
- 21:30examples of the confiteor.
- 21:33We have very many examples but let's do
- 21:35the confiteor. What is the confiteor? If
- 21:37this is what the priest chooses to pray.
- 21:40The priest prays I confess to almighty
- 21:43God and to you my brothers and sisters
- 21:46or we could say Lord you have come to
- 21:48heal the contrite of heart. Lord have
- 21:50mercy. Christ have mercy. This is
- 21:53important. Now
- 21:54in it
- 21:55if the priest prays the confiteor
- 21:58after that he finishes may almighty God
- 22:00have mercy on us, forgive us our sins
- 22:03and bring us to everlasting life.
- 22:06Do you do this?
- 22:08No.
- 22:11You do not make the sign of the cross
- 22:13after the end of the confiteor because
- 22:15that is the sign of absolution in the
- 22:18sacrament. You are receiving absolution
- 22:22not in the sacramental sense. So you
- 22:24don't make the sign of the cross at that
- 22:26point. You just simply say amen. Your
- 22:29venial sins are forgiven but it's not
- 22:31sacramental absolution. So the
- 22:34penitential right ends with an
- 22:36absolution of venial sin in a sense but
- 22:39not sacramental. You still have to go to
- 22:41confession especially for grave sins.
- 22:43Now
- 22:45there is
- 22:46a couple other things. If I didn't do
- 22:48the confiteor but I did you've come to
- 22:51sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord
- 22:52have mercy you say Christ have mercy.
- 22:55Where does this come from?
- 22:58Again scriptural.
- 23:00Lord have mercy. We say it all the time.
- 23:03Where does that come from?
- 23:05Tobit 8:4. Let us pray that the Lord may
- 23:08have mercy upon us. You say Christ have
- 23:12mercy. Where does that come from? Jude
- 23:151:21. Wait for the mercy of our Lord
- 23:19Jesus Christ attain to eternal life.
- 23:23And then I say Lord have mercy again. I
- 23:25could go back to any scripture passage
- 23:27Matthew 20:31. Lord have mercy on us son
- 23:30of David.
- 23:32This is all scriptural. All right. Now
- 23:34if it's a Sunday mass what happens next?
- 23:39Come on Catholics.
- 23:42Gloria.
- 23:43The Gloria. Why is this important? The
- 23:46angels sung this at the birth of Jesus.
- 23:49Not only that it's scriptural. This song
- 23:52gives praise to the entire Trinity. The
- 23:56Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- 23:59Now the Gloria which is a very important
- 24:03prayer
- 24:05and I have it right here in the missile.
- 24:08The Gloria let's go through this for a
- 24:10minute. I I you know I probably don't
- 24:11have time to do all of it. Let me just
- 24:12give you an example. How does it start?
- 24:15Glory to God in the highest and on earth
- 24:18peace to people of good will. Where does
- 24:21that come from? Oh the Catholic church
- 24:23just made it up. No.
- 24:26Luke 2:14.
- 24:28This is from the Bible. Glory to God in
- 24:30the highest and on earth peace among men
- 24:32with whom he is pleased.
- 24:36All right. Now after the collect if it's
- 24:39a Sunday mass or now if it's a if it's a
- 24:41Sunday mass we pray the collect I'm
- 24:42sorry the Gloria.
- 24:44What comes next? I just gave it away.
- 24:46The collect. Or the opening prayer. Now
- 24:51today's a Saturday so if I'm going to
- 24:53the 6th Sunday of ordinary time the
- 24:55collect the priest raises his hand and
- 24:57says oh God who teach us that you abide
- 24:59in the hearts that are just and true
- 25:01grant that we may be so fashioned by
- 25:03your grace as to become a dwelling
- 25:06pleasing to you through Christ our Lord
- 25:08and we say that whole prayer.
- 25:10This is important because in the collect
- 25:14we have
- 25:16we collect ourselves.
- 25:18We get ourselves ready for this mass.
- 25:21And then how does he open up before the
- 25:24collect? Let us pray.
- 25:26So it's specific that collect is
- 25:28specific to the particular day of the
- 25:31liturgical year. All right. Now
- 25:35now we begin the first of the two major
- 25:37parts of the mass.
- 25:39What are the two major parts of the
- 25:41mass?
- 25:43Liturgy of the
- 25:45word and liturgy of the Eucharist. All
- 25:48right. Let's try to do liturgy of the
- 25:49word and then we'll take our break and
- 25:51I'll finish liturgy of the Eucharist at
- 25:53the second talk. All right.
- 25:55Liturgy of the word
- 25:57consists of how many readings?
- 26:00I heard two. No. I heard three. No.
- 26:05Four.
- 26:08If it's a Sunday mass four readings from
- 26:11scripture. What are they?
- 26:14The first is typically from the Old
- 26:16Testament.
- 26:18The second
- 26:20is a psalm.
- 26:22The Psalms.
- 26:24The third is a reading normally from the
- 26:28epistles. What is an epistle?
- 26:31I asked my seventh grade catechism class
- 26:34what is an epistle
- 26:36and the one boy said a baby apostle.
- 26:41No, an epistle is not a baby apostle.
- 26:46Epistle is one of the letters.
- 26:48All right. So the third reading is one
- 26:52of the usually from one of the epistles
- 26:53but doesn't have to be and finally the
- 26:55fourth reading is what?
- 26:57The gospel. All right.
- 27:00Then before we read the gospel we have
- 27:03something called the gospel acclamation.
- 27:06This is where I try to sing the
- 27:09alleluia.
- 27:11It's important because we acclaim God to
- 27:15the world. We sing the alleluia and then
- 27:17we rise. Why do we rise?
- 27:21Again because the alleluia is a joyful
- 27:25word and we're standing to praise and
- 27:28honor God. All right. Now we don't use
- 27:32it though in Lent. Why? Because it is a
- 27:35time of penance not joy.
- 27:38Alleluia is a joyful hymn. Now this sets
- 27:42the tone for the gospel and gives the
- 27:45theme for the gospel. Usually a little
- 27:47short reading, right? And this is
- 27:49important but as I said we rise because
- 27:52we are now hearing the words of Jesus
- 27:55himself.
- 27:58Okay, this is important. When an
- 28:00important person comes in the room
- 28:03we rise. It's a sign of respect.
- 28:06Remember the days when gentlemen would
- 28:08always stand up when a lady entered the
- 28:10room?
- 28:11We've lost that.
- 28:14I notice that now and I'm guilty of it
- 28:16myself sometimes.
- 28:18It's it's it's not good. We should
- 28:20always do that.
- 28:22Jesus is even now more present because
- 28:25we are hearing his own words. He is now
- 28:28in the room.
- 28:30All right.
- 28:31Jesus when we open the mass notice the
- 28:34progression here.
- 28:36When we began the mass I said the Lord
- 28:39be with you. You said with your spirit
- 28:41and I said in the name of Father, Son,
- 28:42Holy Spirit. We're acknowledging that
- 28:44first Christ is here present in spirit.
- 28:47That's what began the mass.
- 28:49So we open up the mass Christ is with us
- 28:51in spirit. Now we get to the liturgy of
- 28:54the word. Now Christ is with us as the
- 28:58word.
- 28:59And soon he's going to be with us in
- 29:02actual body and blood.
- 29:06Okay? So you can see as the mass moves
- 29:09along what is happening. Why do we call
- 29:11Jesus the living word? Why is Jesus
- 29:14called the word? You ever watch EWTN?
- 29:17The Eternal Word Television Network,
- 29:20right? Why do we call him the word?
- 29:24Because in the beginning it says when
- 29:26God the Father spoke in the beginning
- 29:28was the word and the word was made
- 29:31flesh. All right.
- 29:33I'm going to give you a whole year of
- 29:35seminary
- 29:37in 1 minute.
- 29:39The Trinity.
- 29:42The Trinity.
- 29:43Not easy to understand but really not
- 29:46that hard.
- 29:47If you want to know what the Trinity is,
- 29:49kind of honestly think of yourself for a
- 29:52minute.
- 29:54When God the Father thinks,
- 29:59he speaks.
- 30:01When you think,
- 30:03you speak. Now, don't be like me and
- 30:06speak before you think.
- 30:10When God the Father thinks,
- 30:13he speaks. When the Father, think of
- 30:15yourself.
- 30:17God the Father
- 30:19speaks.
- 30:21What comes out is part of you. The word.
- 30:26It's who you are.
- 30:28It's what is on your mind and in your
- 30:29heart comes out your words.
- 30:32So, when God the Father speaks, what
- 30:35comes forth is the word, the Son.
- 30:38Now, in order to have the word, you
- 30:41can't have any word without what?
- 30:44A breath.
- 30:45A breath is the Holy Spirit.
- 30:49So, all of that is me. My thoughts
- 30:52become my words and my words become
- 30:54possible with the power of my breath.
- 30:58God the Father is the origin.
- 31:02When he speaks,
- 31:03the word is the Son. It becomes
- 31:06manifest.
- 31:07This is what we have now in the mass.
- 31:09We're ready to enter into the liturgy of
- 31:11the word and Christ becomes present to
- 31:13us in the word. But, the word doesn't
- 31:15happen without the power of the breath.
- 31:18That is the Holy Spirit. So, this is
- 31:21very important. Now,
- 31:24in this mass now as we proceed,
- 31:27who reads the Gospel?
- 31:30All right, the priest. What if there is
- 31:33a bishop, a priest,
- 31:35and who reads the Gospel first?
- 31:38The bishop. Now, what if there's a
- 31:40priest and a deacon? Who reads the Who
- 31:43reads the the Gospel first?
- 31:46The deacon.
- 31:48Now, what if there's two priests and one
- 31:50is the main celebrant? Is he the one who
- 31:52reads the Gospel?
- 31:54No, it's the concelebrating priest.
- 31:57So, the celebrant or the deacon will
- 31:59read the Gospel before the celebrant.
- 32:03All right. Now, if it's a deacon, he
- 32:06will become to the priest and receive
- 32:07his blessing.
- 32:09Why? Because what the priest says is,
- 32:11"May the Lord be in your heart and on
- 32:12your lips that you may proclaim his
- 32:14Gospel worthily and well." You don't
- 32:16hear that.
- 32:17That's what the priest is saying as he's
- 32:20blessing the deacon.
- 32:21Now, if it's a priest, he goes straight.
- 32:24But, do you notice that before he goes
- 32:26to the ambo, does he not bow at the
- 32:28altar?
- 32:29And what he is saying is, "Cleanse my
- 32:31heart and my lips, almighty God, that I
- 32:33may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel."
- 32:37You see this is going on. Then, he goes
- 32:38to the ambo and he professes the Gospel.
- 32:41But, how does he start?
- 32:44The Lord be with you.
- 32:47Because now we're introducing the Lord
- 32:49in a newer way. He's now present in the
- 32:51word. Before when you the priest said,
- 32:53"Lord be with you," he was talking in
- 32:54spirit. Now, the priest goes and
- 32:56forward. Why does he say it again? The
- 32:58Lord be with you because now the Lord is
- 33:00present in the word.
- 33:01And you say, "And with your spirit." And
- 33:04then he says, "A reading from the holy
- 33:05Gospel according to John." And what do
- 33:07you say?
- 33:09Glory to you, oh Lord. So, you are
- 33:12acknowledging this. Now,
- 33:15do you make a another sign of the cross?
- 33:18Where?
- 33:20Forehead, the lips, and the heart,
- 33:22right? The forehead, lips, and the
- 33:24heart. This is where God should be. In
- 33:26your mind, on your lips, and in your
- 33:29heart. We open our minds to hear God's
- 33:32word and we plan to share it with others
- 33:35by speaking with our lips and we declare
- 33:37we believe in Jesus with all our hearts.
- 33:41Very important. At the end of the
- 33:43reading of the Gospel, you say, "Praise
- 33:46to I say the word of the Lord." And you
- 33:47say,
- 33:49"Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ."
- 33:52Then, you will see the priest bow down
- 33:55and kiss the book. This is the missal,
- 33:56but if it was the the lectionary,
- 33:59and when he does that, he says, "Through
- 34:01the words of the holy Gospel, may our
- 34:05sins be wiped away."
- 34:08You don't think you're participating in
- 34:09this? Oh, I'm tired, looking at my
- 34:12watch.
- 34:14Do you realize what's going on?
- 34:16The priest or the deacon just basically
- 34:18asked, "Through the words of the Gospel,
- 34:20may our sins be wiped away."
- 34:23This is powerful stuff.
- 34:25This is grace going on that you don't
- 34:26even know about. Then, what comes next?
- 34:31A homily.
- 34:33And on the reading, why do we do a
- 34:35homily?
- 34:37Oh, because it sounds good. It makes it
- 34:39break up things in the mass.
- 34:41No, it's scriptural. Second Timothy 4,
- 34:45verse 1 and 2.
- 34:46I charge you in the presence of God and
- 34:49of Christ Jesus, preach the word.
- 34:53Be urgent in season and out of season.
- 34:55Convince, rebuke,
- 34:59and
- 35:00the exhort be unfailing in patience and
- 35:03in teaching.
- 35:05I like that, rebuke.
- 35:07Because, you know, we don't have enough
- 35:08priests today
- 35:10teaching the truth.
- 35:12You know, I go to the I belong at the or
- 35:14I I live and work at the shrine of
- 35:17National Shrine of Divine Mercy in
- 35:18Stockbridge, Massachusetts. And I tell
- 35:20the people there every day how grateful
- 35:22I am that I am there. Because I
- 35:24regularly preach on the five
- 35:26non-negotiables.
- 35:28Does anybody know what the five
- 35:29non-negotiables of our Catholic faith
- 35:31are?
- 35:32The five non-negotiables of our Catholic
- 35:34faith are things that you must hold to.
- 35:37There are no negotiations.
- 35:39They are abortion,
- 35:41euthanasia,
- 35:43embryonic stem cell research, human
- 35:45cloning, and gay marriage. Now, I add to
- 35:48that contraception.
- 35:50So, you will hear me all the time preach
- 35:52against these things.
- 35:54They're intrinsically evil and there is
- 35:55no negotiation. Period. That's the
- 35:58teaching of our faith.
- 36:00But yet, there are so many priests who
- 36:02don't. And I know I'm going to get in
- 36:04trouble someday.
- 36:05I know that one day it's coming. It's
- 36:08coming from Canada. I tried to get into
- 36:10Canada the other uh wasn't that long
- 36:12ago, but it was a while ago.
- 36:14And they wanted to know why I was there.
- 36:16Said, "I'm the keynote speaker."
- 36:18In Ottawa. And they said, "Of what?"
- 36:21And I said, "Well, I'm a Catholic
- 36:22priest." The They called in the head of
- 36:24their version of Homeland Security.
- 36:26Asked me what I was talking on. I said,
- 36:28"Well, I don't understand." He said,
- 36:30"Well, give us your notes."
- 36:32I said, "Well, you're going to have to
- 36:33come to the talk because I don't use
- 36:35notes."
- 36:37I do on this particular talk, but this
- 36:38wasn't the talk I was given.
- 36:40All my other talks I don't use notes.
- 36:43This is really getting scary. He said,
- 36:44"Well, we have laws in Canada and it's
- 36:46my job to enforce them and that you
- 36:48don't break them."
- 36:50Really?
- 36:51Teaching the truth is breaking the law.
- 36:55And so, we have to understand that it's
- 36:56coming to America.
- 36:58I have this feeling that you one day
- 37:00you're all going to look read the
- 37:02newspaper one day and you're going to
- 37:03see my picture is going to say, "Priest
- 37:04is put in prison."
- 37:06So, all I ask you is come visit me.
- 37:10I love your culture. You guys love to
- 37:12eat. Bring me food, okay?
- 37:15That's all I ask. Bring me food. Cuz
- 37:19because
- 37:20if
- 37:21if I'm going to go to jail, at least
- 37:23feed me. I'll I'll I'll I'll do whatever
- 37:26else I can, but I think the time is
- 37:28coming. All right, so let's get back to
- 37:30this. Why does a priest give a homily?
- 37:32He needs to teach the truth. But, here's
- 37:35what we have to remember. The homily is
- 37:37only be done by clergy, like deacons,
- 37:39priests, or bishops. It's not to be done
- 37:42by anybody else. Now, is a Is a homily
- 37:45mandatory?
- 37:46Does a priest have to give a homily?
- 37:50Yes, if it's Sunday.
- 37:53Yes, if it's Sunday. Is there any time
- 37:54limit?
- 37:56No.
- 37:57One of our priests, Father Michael Clay,
- 37:59God bless him. But, he forgot it was his
- 38:01turn and he had to do a homily and he
- 38:02gets up there. He had no homily
- 38:03prepared. And he just looked at
- 38:05everybody and he goes,
- 38:07"Fire."
- 38:10And he sat down. That was his homily.
- 38:14Some of you probably would like the
- 38:15homily like that.
- 38:17But, in a weekday mass, the priest does
- 38:20not have to give a homily. It's a good
- 38:22idea, but he doesn't have to. But, it's
- 38:24mandatory on Sundays. Now, what's the
- 38:25difference between a sermon and a
- 38:27homily?
- 38:28You hear a non-Catholic brother say,
- 38:29"Oh, it was a great sermon."
- 38:31We Catholics give homilies. Protestants
- 38:34give sermons. What's the difference?
- 38:36All right.
- 38:37A homily refers to a specific reading
- 38:40and applies it to daily life. Like, I'll
- 38:42read about the Annunciation or about
- 38:45Mary's Visitation.
- 38:47And I will preach on that particular
- 38:49Gospel passage. A sermon is different. A
- 38:53sermon is a particular topic and it will
- 38:55pull from multiple scriptures to be able
- 38:58to talk about that topic. Like, maybe
- 39:01growing in
- 39:03virtue, then a sermon will be pulling a
- 39:05multiple passages from scripture about
- 39:08that, whereas a homily is reading a
- 39:10particular passage and then talking
- 39:12about the passage. Not a huge
- 39:14difference,
- 39:15but that is what it is. Now, after the
- 39:17homily comes what?
- 39:20Silence.
- 39:21Silence. All right. So, this is
- 39:24important. Now,
- 39:26if it's Sunday, what is the next thing
- 39:29that comes in the
- 39:31part of the mass?
- 39:34The Creed. Very good. Or the
- 39:36for that, profession of faith.
- 39:40This is a statement
- 39:42of the Apostles
- 39:44faith.
- 39:46You just rattle through it not even
- 39:48thinking of the words. Do you realize
- 39:50what you're saying?
- 39:52You are stating the faith of the
- 39:55Apostles.
- 39:57This is what's in the Creed. The Creed
- 40:00leads us to an act of faith in the Holy
- 40:02Trinity and what each of those members
- 40:05of the Trinity does for us. Let's look
- 40:07at just a couple examples. I'm running
- 40:08out of time and I don't have time to do
- 40:10it all. All right.
- 40:11The priest and the people say, "I
- 40:12believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
- 40:15maker of heaven and earth."
- 40:17You know that comes from Genesis 14:19.
- 40:20God most high, maker of heaven and
- 40:22earth.
- 40:23Then of all things visible and
- 40:25invisible.
- 40:27Never heard that before? Well, open your
- 40:28Bible, Colossians 1:16. For in him all
- 40:31things were created in heaven and on
- 40:33earth, visible and invisible.
- 40:36I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the
- 40:38only begotten Son of God. That comes
- 40:40right from Luke 1:35. Therefore, the
- 40:43child to be born will be called holy,
- 40:45thus Son of God.
- 40:48Begotten not made, consubstantial with
- 40:50the Father.
- 40:52What does that mean?
- 40:54Turn to John.
- 40:56First chapter 10 verse 30. I and the
- 40:58Father are one.
- 41:00That's what consubstantial means. Of one
- 41:03substance. The Father and the Son and
- 41:06the Holy Spirit are one.
- 41:08He will come again in glory to judge the
- 41:10living and the dead.
- 41:12That comes from 2 Timothy 4:1. I charge
- 41:15you in the presence of God and of Christ
- 41:17Jesus, who is to judge the living and
- 41:20the dead.
- 41:21I believe in one holy Catholic and
- 41:23Apostolic Church.
- 41:25Now notice Catholics with a small c.
- 41:29Not a big c.
- 41:31Capital c means our Catholic faith.
- 41:34But that comes from the word Catholic,
- 41:35small c. What does that mean?
- 41:37Universal.
- 41:39This comes from Romans 12:5. So we,
- 41:43though many, are one body in Christ and
- 41:46individual members of one another.
- 41:50That's what that means. So this whole
- 41:52thing goes on and on. I can't explain
- 41:54the whole Creed, but you get the point.
- 41:56This is powerful stuff. All right, the
- 41:59Creed concludes with our belief in the
- 42:01resurrection
- 42:03from the dead and eternal life in
- 42:06heaven. This is the basis of our faith.
- 42:08We must pray this prayer because we
- 42:11can't know this on our own. It must be
- 42:13revealed to us.
- 42:15This is important. All right. Now, what
- 42:19comes after the Creed?
- 42:21If it's a Sunday Mass.
- 42:25Petitions or intercessions
- 42:28or universal prayer or prayers of the
- 42:31faithful.
- 42:32Okay. Now, these intercessions are
- 42:35important. First of all, why do we do
- 42:37them?
- 42:38Again, scripture. Philippians 1:3 and 4.
- 42:43I thank God in all my remembrance of you
- 42:46always in every prayer of mine for you.
- 42:51All making my prayer with joy.
- 42:54Bible commands us to pray for each
- 42:56other. This is what we do when we are
- 42:59gathered in the Mass. When the church is
- 43:02gathered, we have the responsibility to
- 43:04pray for each other, to pray for the
- 43:06whole church. All right, and the world
- 43:10because we are mystically united. Now,
- 43:13what is the order? The order is very
- 43:15important. We pray for the church, the
- 43:18world, our government, the sick and
- 43:21suffering, specific needs, then the
- 43:24deceased.
- 43:25And you know what's important? Because
- 43:28I'm not here for a political talk.
- 43:32But we really need to pray, no matter
- 43:34how much they frustrate us,
- 43:36our government.
- 43:38Because they're still our government
- 43:40whether we like the particular people or
- 43:41not. There are some that I have no idea
- 43:44how they got into the office that they
- 43:46are.
- 43:48But I'll give you an example though.
- 43:50I was at a mission not long ago and I I
- 43:53made the comment in one of my talks that
- 43:55I do a Mass every month for President
- 43:58Trump.
- 44:00And he was very angry.
- 44:03This man.
- 44:04And he came to me afterwards. He said,
- 44:06"Father,
- 44:07this man
- 44:09is so bad." And he rattled off all these
- 44:12things.
- 44:13And I said, "Listen, I'm not here to
- 44:17open up a political discussion.
- 44:19But what I can tell you is this.
- 44:22Every month now around the world, forces
- 44:27of evil, led by the wicked, or actually
- 44:30witches,
- 44:32are gathering together
- 44:34and placing curses on the president.
- 44:39Now, regardless of what you think of the
- 44:42president personally,
- 44:44he's still the president.
- 44:46He is our leader
- 44:48and he is in charge and we are the
- 44:51people.
- 44:53We are obligated
- 44:55to pray for our leaders. We are
- 44:58obligated to pray for them.
- 45:01So when I pray a prayer or a Mass for
- 45:03President Trump,
- 45:06I can't imagine anybody
- 45:09wishing an evil curse upon anyone else.
- 45:14Because actually, if that happens, we're
- 45:16the ones who are going to suffer.
- 45:18So why would we do this? We must pray.
- 45:22We must pray for each other. We must
- 45:25pray for our leaders. This is not a bad
- 45:28thing. We must leave our feelings to the
- 45:30side and pray for what is right.
- 45:34And our prayers can make a difference.
- 45:37They're making a huge difference. Look
- 45:39at the pro-life movement today. It's
- 45:41picking up momentum like we've we've
- 45:43we've Yeah, like we've never seen.
- 45:47All right.
- 45:48Let's just start the next section real
- 45:50quickly. We just did Liturgy of the
- 45:52Word. What's the next section of the
- 45:53Mass?
- 45:55Liturgy of the
- 45:57Eucharist. All right. Now we are
- 46:00building. We are building up. We can
- 46:03realize that now we are entering into
- 46:06the highest point of our lives and that
- 46:10is whenever we attend Mass, working
- 46:13towards consecration
- 46:15and receiving of Holy Communion. All
- 46:18right. Now,
- 46:20the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The first
- 46:23thing that begins is the offertory.
- 46:26You've heard that term and this is where
- 46:28gifts are brought to the altar.
- 46:31Why? Oh, the church is just asking for
- 46:33money.
- 46:34Right?
- 46:36No. All right, Matthew 5:23.
- 46:40So if you are offering your gift at the
- 46:42altar and there remember that your
- 46:44brother has something against you, leave
- 46:47your gift there.
- 46:50This is what the Bible tells us to do.
- 46:53Now gifts on behalf of the people
- 46:56given to the priest
- 46:58are then given back to the people by the
- 47:01priest
- 47:03after they've been transformed.
- 47:06So you're giving a simple gift, a
- 47:08natural gift.
- 47:10The priest is transforming it and giving
- 47:13back to you a supernatural gift.
- 47:16This is amazing. Now, we do also give
- 47:20tithes, right?
- 47:22Are Catholics required to tithe 10%?
- 47:27No. But we are required to prayer, fast,
- 47:31and alms give. So in a way, the tithe is
- 47:34a requirement, but how much the church
- 47:36has never established. But we are
- 47:39required to give back. Now, this is
- 47:42important. We give tithes because God
- 47:44supplies
- 47:45all of us, everything we have, and only
- 47:50ask for a portion of it back.
- 47:53So this is understandable. It's not
- 47:55about the church being greedy.
- 47:57It's about God being generous.
- 48:00And you're just giving a little back to
- 48:02him so that through the church his work
- 48:05can be done. All right.
- 48:07There's two purposes for the preparation
- 48:09of gifts. Now we're talking about the
- 48:11part of the Mass. Remember where the
- 48:14collection is made and then the gifts
- 48:15are processed forward. All right. There
- 48:17are two purposes. The bread and the wine
- 48:20is to be offered in sacrifice to God
- 48:23and to prepare the priest and the people
- 48:27to sacrifice a self-offering of their
- 48:31own lives.
- 48:33This
- 48:34is incredibly
- 48:37important.
- 48:39So hear this again.
- 48:40The preparation of the gifts has two
- 48:42purposes. The bread and wine are to be
- 48:43offered in sacrifice to God
- 48:46and to prepare the priest and the people
- 48:49for their offering to God. So you were
- 48:51offering the bread and the wine to God
- 48:53the Father that will become the body and
- 48:55blood of his Son and we're offering the
- 48:57priest and the people to God
- 49:01for our offering. So it's both.
- 49:04This is the time to attach the things in
- 49:06your heart to that paten that's coming
- 49:09or that vessel that's coming forward.
- 49:12Like the gifts, God will transform those
- 49:16things you give him.
- 49:18We're giving him bread and wine. He's
- 49:20about to transform those,
- 49:23transubstantiation.
- 49:25But bring him yourself.
- 49:27He can't transform you if you don't
- 49:31bring yourself just like the bread and
- 49:34the wine. Can I transform bread and wine
- 49:37if it's not brought to me?
- 49:39No.
- 49:41God can't transform you if you don't
- 49:44bring yourself to him in the same way
- 49:46the bread and the wine is brought to
- 49:48him.
- 49:49This is what's going on. Are you
- 49:50preparing yourself to be transformed?
- 49:53Or are you smacking on your gum waiting
- 49:56to see if the Cowboy game is started
- 49:58yet?
- 49:59Okay.
- 50:00This is important. Now,
- 50:03even the angels
- 50:05bring their vessels forward.
- 50:08They even come forward.
- 50:10And they kneel around the altar. And
- 50:13they're holding vessels. What's in those
- 50:16vessels?
- 50:18We'll tell you when we get to
- 50:19consecration.
- 50:21All right. The procession of the gifts
- 50:23goes back to when people would bring
- 50:25bread and wine from their own homes.
- 50:28Now, when they are brought forward, the
- 50:31altar is prepared. All right. So, the
- 50:34priest
- 50:36starts by preparation of the altar.
- 50:38There's a deacon. The deacon will do it
- 50:40or sometimes there is somebody serving
- 50:42like a server at the altar. Now,
- 50:45it will come. It's the chalice
- 50:48looking like this with the priest. Now,
- 50:50you don't pay attention often,
- 50:52but the top is what we call a corporal.
- 50:55The corporal is opened up, spread out,
- 50:58unfolded
- 51:00on the altar. What's the purpose of the
- 51:02corporal?
- 51:05To capture any particles of the host
- 51:09that may fall so that at the end at the
- 51:12end of mass they're folded back up
- 51:14and these particles are not fallen to
- 51:16the ground.
- 51:17All right?
- 51:19The next thing,
- 51:22the pall, we'll talk about this in a
- 51:24minute, is set aside.
- 51:26And then the priest begins
- 51:29with the paten.
- 51:31This here is what holds the main host
- 51:34for the celebration of the Eucharist.
- 51:37And the priest
- 51:38holds the paten and he says, "Blessed
- 51:40are you, Lord God of all creation.
- 51:43For through your goodness." We know this
- 51:45prayer, right? And what do you say?
- 51:48Blessed be God forever. Now,
- 51:51these words
- 51:54are the exact words Jesus would have
- 51:57spoken at the Last Supper.
- 51:59They are referred to as a Jewish meal
- 52:02prayer in biblical times. Blessed are
- 52:05you, Lord God of all creation for
- 52:07through your goodness, right? We have
- 52:09this bread to offer you. Fruit of the
- 52:10earth and work of human hands, it will
- 52:12become for us
- 52:14the bread of life.
- 52:17Okay? This is what Jesus would have
- 52:21said. This is a Jewish Eucharistic meal
- 52:24prayer
- 52:25during the time of the Bible.
- 52:28How powerful
- 52:30that we're saying these same words.
- 52:33Now, after this,
- 52:36the priest takes the cruets, a cruet of
- 52:39wine and a cruet of water.
- 52:42He puts the wine into the chalice and
- 52:45then he drops a single drop
- 52:48of water.
- 52:49Now,
- 52:50the drop of water into the wine
- 52:52symbolizes what?
- 52:56Christ's humanity, the drop of water,
- 52:59mixed into the cup of his divinity,
- 53:04the wine.
- 53:05So, the two are put together, Christ's
- 53:08humanity and his divinity. Then the
- 53:11priest says quietly, you don't hear
- 53:13this,
- 53:14"But by the mystery of this water and
- 53:16wine, may we come to share in the
- 53:18divinity of Christ who humbled himself
- 53:21to share in our humanity."
- 53:25So, this is what we are doing in the
- 53:26mass. Now,
- 53:28once you put the water into the wine, it
- 53:31is impossible to ever take it out again.
- 53:34So, this is Jesus in his humanity can
- 53:38never be separated from his divinity.
- 53:42The mixing of the two symbolizes the
- 53:45unity of the church, the water,
- 53:48and Jesus, the wine.
- 53:51Very important. Now,
- 53:53the priest blesses the wine. Blessed are
- 53:56you, Lord God of all creation for
- 53:58through your goodness through your
- 53:59goodness we have this wine to offer you,
- 54:02fruit of the vine and work of human
- 54:04hands. It will become our spiritual
- 54:07drink. Now, he places it down and what
- 54:11does he put over it?
- 54:14All right. The pall.
- 54:16What is the purpose of the pall?
- 54:20People think of
- 54:22funerals, right? Where we lay the pall
- 54:25over the casket.
- 54:28Now, we're laying the pall over Christ
- 54:30who's to give his life, right? But do
- 54:33you know the real purpose of the pall?
- 54:36Keep the bugs out.
- 54:39It actually is.
- 54:41It's to keep the bugs out. Now, I never
- 54:43used to pay attention to this
- 54:46and I never really used a pall. Many
- 54:47priests don't use pall. Mass is not
- 54:49invalid or illicit if you don't use a
- 54:51pall.
- 54:52But then I was in Minnesota.
- 54:56And I was with a wonderful priest friend
- 54:58of mine up there.
- 55:00And we were celebrating mass. I was the
- 55:03main celebrant.
- 55:05And
- 55:06the priest was behind me
- 55:08and I poured the precious or the wine,
- 55:11it's not the precious blood yet. And we
- 55:13had blessed it.
- 55:15And I didn't have a pall.
- 55:19And so after we did the Eucharistic
- 55:21prayers, we finished consecrating the
- 55:24wine. Now it is the precious blood of
- 55:26Christ, right?
- 55:28And sure enough, on the prairies of
- 55:31Minnesota,
- 55:33in flew the giant biggest horsefly
- 55:39you've ever seen.
- 55:41And he's circling around over the altar.
- 55:45I have no pall.
- 55:48And I'm blessing, I've consecrated. Now
- 55:50we're saying the Eucharistic prayers, so
- 55:51my hands are up here. I'm trying to go
- 55:53like this as I'm saying
- 55:55saying the prayer.
- 55:58And sure enough, here comes that
- 55:59horsefly.
- 56:04Right into the precious blood.
- 56:07Now,
- 56:08are we priests allowed to remove that
- 56:11horsefly?
- 56:19I see the horsefly.
- 56:23It is time to consume the precious
- 56:25blood.
- 56:29And I look at Father
- 56:32and I said, "Father,
- 56:35it's your parish."
- 56:42And Father looks at me and he says,
- 56:44"You're the main celebrant."
- 56:48And down it went.
- 56:53We
- 56:55I now use a pall at every single mass.
- 57:07I never leave home without it. I even
- 57:09travel.
- 57:11I even travel with my pall. All right.
- 57:14So,
- 57:15after blessing the cup, and I said we
- 57:18said the prayer. Now the priest turns
- 57:20around after he finishes, he bows down
- 57:23and he says his prayer, "All right, with
- 57:25humble spirit and contrite heart, we may
- 57:27may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and
- 57:31may our sacrifice
- 57:34not mine, our sacrifice in your sight
- 57:38this day be pleasing to you, Lord God."
- 57:41Now, the priest is uniting you with this
- 57:48Then the priest turns around and does
- 57:50what? What does he do next?
- 57:54Washes his hands.
- 57:56Now, this is important.
- 58:00What this is is symbolic.
- 58:03If that priest has any sin on his soul,
- 58:06maybe he didn't have a chance to go to
- 58:07confession. He should. He really really
- 58:10needs to. Some of the saints tell that a
- 58:13priest celebrating mass
- 58:15in a state of grave sin opens himself up
- 58:18for possession.
- 58:21This is what some of the saints tell us.
- 58:23And so it's very important. Now, if a
- 58:25priest doesn't have a chance,
- 58:28that washing of the hands is very
- 58:31important.
- 58:32Because no matter what that priest has
- 58:34done,
- 58:35his sins are suspended.
- 58:39All of his sins are suspended.
- 58:42So that he can actually confect the
- 58:45Eucharist.
- 58:46Now, does that mean he doesn't have to
- 58:48go to confession?
- 58:49No. As soon as mass is over, he's got to
- 58:52go to confession. But the washing of the
- 58:54hands
- 58:55suspend those sins so that the priest is
- 58:58able to confect the Eucharist so you
- 59:01know your mass is valid even if the
- 59:04priest is a sinner.
- 59:06And then remember, the church remember,
- 59:09the church is made up of human and the
- 59:12divine. Okay? Like Jesus, the church is
- 59:15human and divine. In the church's divine
- 59:18nature, she will never fail you. The
- 59:20church has never ever ever mis-taught
- 59:24you officially. Now, you've had some
- 59:26wacky priests and bishops. All right.
- 59:30We've had some of those. But they are in
- 59:33line with the teaching of the church.
- 59:34The teaching of the church has always
- 59:37remained the truth. It is guided by the
- 59:40Holy Spirit. You will never ever be
- 59:42misled by the real teaching of the
- 59:44church. Again, be careful to not be led
- 59:48astray by some of these wacky priests or
- 59:51bishops. All right? Sometimes people
- 59:53probably say I'm a wacky priest. I can
- 59:56be wacky, but I always teach the truth,
- 59:58okay? That is one thing that the priest
- 1:00:02must do. However,
- 1:00:04just like Jesus, the priest is human and
- 1:00:06and it is divine. In her divine nature,
- 1:00:08she is perfect. She will never This mass
- 1:00:11is perfect. Your prayers, as much as you
- 1:00:15like to say, "Father, I pray at my own
- 1:00:16home. I don't need to go to a church."
- 1:00:19Your prayers are imperfect. Your prayers
- 1:00:22are imperfect cuz you have sin. I have
- 1:00:25sin. My prayers, your prayers are
- 1:00:27imperfect. There's only one form of
- 1:00:29perfect prayer. That is this mass.
- 1:00:33What's about to happen in this mass?
- 1:00:37Is this mass is God offering God to God.
- 1:00:42And that is perfect. What is going on in
- 1:00:46this mass, which I'm going to get to in
- 1:00:48about 10 minutes, is something that we
- 1:00:50have no idea
- 1:00:53why or how powerful it is.
- 1:00:56And I'm going to explain that when we
- 1:00:58get to the consecration here in a few
- 1:00:59minutes.
- 1:01:00But back to this point, the point is
- 1:01:03in her divine nature, the church won't
- 1:01:05fail. But in in her human nature, she
- 1:01:08will. We are broken. The church is made
- 1:01:10up of broken people. But you don't judge
- 1:01:14the church by the men of the church.
- 1:01:17Judge the church by the truth of Jesus
- 1:01:20Christ.
