Un SENTIMENT que J'AVAIS OUBLIÉ... - TEST The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Switch 2 Remake Review — Transcript

- 0:00Melancholy.
- 0:03This game made me feel a sense of
- 0:05melancholy, somewhere between sadness,
- 0:08poetry, and a touch of depression—
- 0:11really.
- 0:13And it's been years and years since I’ve
- 0:15felt that for a production.
- 0:18There are two Zeldas that manage to make
- 0:21me feel this a little bit: Ocarina of
- 0:23Time and A Link to the Past.
- 0:26The two games that truly manage to touch
- 0:29me.
- 0:31With this remake, I wasn't expecting
- 0:33such a well-mastered game.
- 0:36I'm talking about the overall experience
- 0:37, mind you, because this game clearly
- 0:39has flaws; it has a lot of them.
- 0:41But beyond that, the experience is such
- 0:44that all those flaws are veiled by magic
- 0:47.
- 0:50There’s a kind of melancholy that sets
- 0:52in—pardon me—a melancholy that sets in
- 0:54as the adventure unfolds.
- 0:57And frankly, I'll tell you, I would have
- 1:01liked to have my memories wiped, to have
- 1:04my brain rebooted, just to rediscover
- 1:07the game from this perspective.
- 1:12But really, a facet pushed even further
- 1:15into poetry and presentation, with an
- 1:18art direction that charms, and above all
- 1:21, they understood one thing: that the
- 1:24music is important and must match the
- 1:27visuals, match the emotion, match what
- 1:30is really happening during a sequence,
- 1:33and so on.
- 1:35There needs to be a union, a kind of
- 1:37harmony between the image, the sound,
- 1:39and the story. Ocarina of Time—we know
- 1:42the game by heart, we know it by heart.
- 1:46Except that here, it has been elevated
- 1:47in a way that makes this very feeling—
- 1:49this melancholy—well, I had forgotten it
- 1:51.
- 1:53It's crazy.
- 1:55So I’m going to share my impressions of
- 1:57the remake of The Legend of Zelda:
- 2:00Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2.
- 2:02There is a lot to cover. So sit back,
- 2:05put me in the background, and just
- 2:08listen. We're going to take it nice and
- 2:10easy.
- 2:11I'm going to list what I enjoyed and
- 2:13what I hated, because there are flaws,
- 2:15especially on the visual side.
- 2:18There are some little hiccups.
- 2:21But overall, for me, it deserves its
- 2:24score—an extremely high score—because in
- 2:27the end, when you put down the
- 2:29controller and you have that feeling,
- 2:32beyond just melancholy—not nostalgia,
- 2:35but almost, I don't know, sadness—of
- 2:38wanting to move on, yet it's forced upon
- 2:41you because, when "The End" appears, all
- 2:44you want to do is start over. You want
- 2:47to go back?
- 2:48Well, it deserves its score.
- 2:50It totally deserves its score.
- 2:53Ladies and gentlemen, I'll stop talking
- 2:55now, and let's get into my impressions
- 2:57of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- 2:59on Nintendo Switch.
- 3:26Alright, Martial from the path sharing
- 3:27his impressions with us. I'm shaking his
- 3:29hand. There we go, live.
- 3:32Reviewing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina
- 3:34of Time. A sumptuous remake on Switch 2
- 3:36that really taps into nostalgia.
- 3:39Hyrule has never looked so resplendent.
- 3:43Released in 1998 on Nintendo 64.
- 3:49It's crazy.
- 3:501998 is my favorite year. The World Cup
- 3:54, extraordinary games, Resident Evil 2,
- 3:57memories with my mother.
- 3:59Anyway, I it really is my favorite year
- 4:03. I could make a video about it one day
- 4:06, I think, to tell you why it’s my
- 4:08favorite year in entertainment, cinema,
- 4:11and music. It is just a crazy year.
- 4:14Be that as it may, released in 1998 on
- 4:16Nintendo 64, The Legend of Zelda:
- 4:18Ocarina of Time left its mark on a whole
- 4:20generation of players and remains one of
- 4:22the most iconic episodes of the saga to
- 4:24this day.
- 4:26Today, when someone talks about The
- 4:28Legend of Zelda, they often talk about
- 4:30Ocarina of Time.
- 4:32It's not my favorite, clearly not.
- 4:35Yes, it left a lasting impression. Yes,
- 4:37back in '98, little Marti was amazed by
- 4:41what he saw, but it's not my favorite.
- 4:46With this new version destined for the
- 4:49Switch 2, Big N gives its masterpiece a
- 4:52real visual facelift, an orchestrated
- 4:55soundtrack, and much more modern
- 4:57controls.
- 4:59As for the soundtrack, there are even
- 5:02new notes, new melodies, music that
- 5:05captures the vibe of Ocarina of Time
- 5:07mixed with cinematics.
- 5:11Just talking about it gives me
- 5:12goosebumps.
- 5:15We join Link, a young hero who left the
- 5:17Kokiri Forest to save the kingdom of
- 5:19Hyrule from a terrible threat in an
- 5:21adventure that spans ages and cleverly
- 5:23plays with time.
- 5:25While the plot and the general structure
- 5:27remain faithful to the original work,
- 5:29the numerous improvements made to the
- 5:31gameplay experience considerably change
- 5:33the way we explore this universe.
- 5:36An ideal opportunity to rediscover a
- 5:38video game monument or to finally
- 5:41experience it in conditions worthy of
- 5:43modern machines.
- 5:45I told my daughter to stop.
- 5:48She had started the Nintendo 64 version
- 5:51because she’s curious, she kept hearing
- 5:53about it and so on.
- 5:56She is at uh Yes.
- 5:58There. Right when she’s about to pull
- 6:01the Master Sword in the Temple of Time,
- 6:04I tell her to stop.
- 6:06Honestly, I tell her stop because I want
- 6:09her to discover the game
- 6:12in a modern way.
- 6:14So, people will tell me "Yes, but it's
- 6:15good to show it to her.""I agree with
- 6:17you.""Do I really agree with you?" She
- 6:20said to me, "Are you sure, Dad?"
- 6:21I say yes yes yes, I really want her to
- 6:23play the game like this with the
- 6:25cutscenes, the immersion, the voice
- 6:27acting, the atmosphere, the visuals.
- 6:31I want her to get excited about modern
- 6:33consoles. It's her generation.
- 6:35In '98, it amazed us, but her, I see it
- 6:38of course, she likes it.
- 6:40But it's not the same feeling because we
- 6:43are in a generation where video games
- 6:45are overdeveloped with crazy graphics
- 6:47and so on.
- 6:49And she told me herself, "I'll go back
- 6:51to the Nintendo 64 version later, okay,
- 6:53I trust you and so on."
- 6:55I really want her to discover this
- 6:57production with this rendering.
- 7:01That's to tell you how crazy it is. It
- 7:04blows your mind.
- 7:06Anyway, let's move on to the visual part
- 7:08.
- 7:17Let's start with what jumps out at you
- 7:19immediately. The art direction has been
- 7:22enhanced. The result is simply
- 7:24magnificent.
- 7:25The environments have gained in richness
- 7:27. The textures are much more detailed
- 7:29and every corner seems to have benefited
- 7:32from special attention.
- 7:34The temples, villages, and landscapes of
- 7:36Hyrule enjoy a new lease on life with an
- 7:38impressive amount of small details that
- 7:40give more character to this universe.
- 7:43The lighting effects are particularly
- 7:46successful to the point that we
- 7:48sometimes take the time to simply stop
- 7:50and admire the scenery. That's something
- 7:53I often do in video games. I want to
- 7:55look at the environments. I want to look
- 7:57into the distance. I want to see what's
- 7:58happening. Is it alive? Is there
- 8:00wildlife? Is there flora? Does it move?
- 8:03Because it's animated and this game
- 8:05really treats us, really treats us
- 8:07visually, it's insane.
- 8:10They added lots of little details to
- 8:12Hyrule Field, little streams, little
- 8:15birds, butterflies, the grass moving in
- 8:17the wind, that kind of thing, and it
- 8:20works.
- 8:21When I talk about the lights too, well,
- 8:23the little life fairy delicately
- 8:25illuminates the areas plunged into
- 8:26darkness.
- 8:28There are some slightly dark moments in
- 8:30the game and you have the little fairy
- 8:31circling around you, and you have this
- 8:33little slightly reassuring light in an
- 8:35area where you feel something is about
- 8:36to happen.
- 8:38I find it well-executed, and that's why
- 8:41I want my daughter to play the game
- 8:43under these conditions, because there's
- 8:46an extra little something visually that
- 8:48gives you a sense of comfort.
- 8:50I think that's the word.
- 8:53And I promise you, seeing the little
- 8:55Navi spinning around with the light
- 8:56passing from one side to the other,
- 8:58reflecting on the wall and so on, well,
- 9:00it adds a little something extra.
- 9:03When it's handled well—and it’s
- 9:05well-made here—well, it just works.
- 9:07While the bluish glow of our charged
- 9:09blade illuminates the surroundings. I
- 9:11really enjoyed doing that so many times
- 9:13in little caves, things like that, and
- 9:14so on. Just charging the blade to
- 9:16slightly light up the area and see
- 9:18what's happening, because there are
- 9:20zones where it is extremely dark.
- 9:22There you go. And I, I, it’s amazing,
- 9:25it’s amazing.
- 9:28The lighting effects and particles bring
- 9:29a real magic to the whole experience.
- 9:32The work done on the environments isn't
- 9:34limited to just a simple fresh coat of
- 9:35paint, by the way.
- 9:37Certain areas have been densified,
- 9:39notably with new waterfalls and pools of
- 9:42water in Hyrule Field.
- 9:44Kakariko Village has been rearranged,
- 9:46and new elements allow for further
- 9:48exploration of certain sectors, like the
- 9:50grates and connections added to Goron
- 9:52Village or the Gerudo Fortress.
- 9:55The animations also benefit from this
- 9:57update, while the time that passes—
- 10:00continuously this time—helps make the
- 10:03kingdom feel more alive. Hyrule really
- 10:05gives the impression of being a world
- 10:08that exists independently of our
- 10:09movements.
- 10:12What they’ve done visually, they’ve
- 10:14brought this slightly realistic side,
- 10:15and personally, I appreciate it.
- 10:17The fog has been a subject of debate on
- 10:19social media.
- 10:20It didn't bother me at all; on the
- 10:22contrary, because you can really feel
- 10:24the humidity of the locations, and the
- 10:27damper it is, the denser the fog gets.
- 10:31It’s well-integrated.
- 10:33There you go, it's not always present;
- 10:35it depends on the forest, the humidity,
- 10:37and places like, for example, where the
- 10:39Zoras are, or the lake.
- 10:42Exactly, you really feel like you’re in
- 10:45a
- 10:47natural area in the end, and our
- 10:49movements—every step we take—actually
- 10:52make the fog dissipate accordingly, and
- 10:55it's super well-made.
- 11:00Now, I am obviously showing you the
- 11:03qualities here, undeniable qualities,
- 11:05and you've seen them through the
- 11:07trailers and so on.
- 11:10There are flaws, and we are going to
- 11:12talk about them. However, this idyllic
- 11:14picture must be qualified depending on
- 11:16the mode used.
- 11:18On a television, technical flaws are
- 11:20easier to notice, especially aliasing,
- 11:21which corresponds to the jagged "
- 11:23staircase" effects visible on the edges
- 11:25of objects and characters.
- 11:27Unfortunately, we see quite a lot of it
- 11:31.
- 11:33We also note some popping and clipping
- 11:35issues when elements of the scenery
- 11:37appear abruptly.
- 11:39uh, on the screen as we move forward or
- 11:42when textures load to display more
- 11:44detail.
- 11:46So you will see it in the game.
- 11:49When you walk around, poof, a small
- 11:51element appears, poof, a texture that is
- 11:54a bit sharper, a bit flashier, and so on
- 11:57.
- 11:59So they want to push the concept of "we
- 12:01put a lot of things on screen, we bring
- 12:04this photorealistic side," but
- 12:05unfortunately we work according to our
- 12:08hardware.
- 12:09We still want to dazzle you, but we
- 12:11can't go any further because the
- 12:14hardware doesn't allow it.
- 12:16I really feel it, but it remains very
- 12:19pretty.
- 12:20Furthermore, the density of certain
- 12:23foliage and certain clumps of grass can
- 12:25seem strange. Let me start over.
- 12:27Furthermore, the density of certain
- 12:29foliage and certain clumps of grass can
- 12:30seem strange.
- 12:32And I put in parentheses: because of the
- 12:34resolution or FSR.
- 12:36I think it's more likely because of FSR
- 12:37. There you go, for those who don't know
- 12:39, it's a technology that improves the
- 12:41image, upscales the resolution, and
- 12:42improves the frame rate.
- 12:44The problem with using this type of
- 12:46technology is that it can bring a
- 12:48slightly messy look to the image. That's
- 12:51what I feel.
- 12:52Being used to the PC world now, as I've
- 12:54been playing on PC for X years now.
- 12:56When you activate these kinds of things
- 12:58, well yes, the image is less flashy and
- 12:59less sharp.
- 13:00For example, if you look at the ground,
- 13:02you will see some foliage moving, etc.,
- 13:04but from time to time, you get the
- 13:06impression it's a bit blurry, a bit, a
- 13:08bit strange. There it is. And I think
- 13:10it's due to FSR. If there's no FSR, then
- 13:13it's the resolution. It's just not
- 13:14possible otherwise.
- 13:16In short, this can give a slightly
- 13:19smudged look; nothing dramatic, but
- 13:21these small imperfections stand out more
- 13:24on a large screen.
- 13:25So, I specify, in TV mode. Look at this
- 13:28absolutely crazy image.
- 13:30However, in handheld mode, the results
- 13:33are much more flattering.
- 13:36The image looks sharper, more vibrant,
- 13:38and the defects mentioned previously
- 13:39become much less perceptible, especially
- 13:41the aliasing.
- 13:43And that is normal. Why?
- 13:45Well, the screen size, you see, the
- 13:47smallness of the screen almost acts as a
- 13:50particularly effective beauty filter.
- 13:53Yes, it works.
- 13:56In both configurations, the game runs at
- 13:59around 60 frames per second, offering
- 14:01very welcome fluidity. Movement is
- 14:03pleasant, animations benefit from this
- 14:05stability, and we find a level of
- 14:07comfort perfectly suited to this new
- 14:09version.
- 14:10Another particularly welcome improvement
- 14:12is that time now flows continuously,
- 14:15including inside villages and buildings
- 14:17.
- 14:18Transitions have also been overhauled in
- 14:20several areas, and that is a joy.
- 14:24That is a joy. Transitions, for example
- 14:27, when I'm on Hyrule Field, I can go to
- 14:30Lon Lon Ranch without any issues,
- 14:32without cutaways or loading screens,
- 14:34including the lake nearby.
- 14:36I can go there.
- 14:38There you go. And there are many things
- 14:40like that.
- 14:43Even in the Citadel, I can enter shops
- 14:45without any issues, without cutaways,
- 14:47without a black screen, and I love that
- 14:48.
- 14:50Certain areas are now connected without
- 14:53black screens or loading, notably Hyrule
- 14:55Field, Lon Lon Ranch, and Lake Hylia.
- 14:57There you go, these three sectors are
- 14:59connected.
- 15:00Even when we enter a house or a shop,
- 15:02the experience proves to be much more
- 15:04fluid.
- 15:05These small changes provide a welcome
- 15:07continuity to exploration and
- 15:09significantly strengthen immersion.
- 15:19The gameplay. Come on, let's look into
- 15:21it.
- 15:23Link has finally taken some lessons in
- 15:25modernity, and I’m telling you, it feels
- 15:28good.
- 15:30Whether you like it or not, the 1998
- 15:33gameplay is extremely rigid.
- 15:36If you defend the '98 gameplay, it's
- 15:39really just nostalgia talking.
- 15:41Because between the targeting, the
- 15:44camera, and the fact that you can't jump
- 15:48, it's...it's heavy.
- 15:50It's very heavy, and we remember it.
- 15:53Well, I remember it. It's not nostalgia
- 15:56that's going to cloud my brain here.
- 15:58Truly, the first time I played Ocarina
- 16:01of Time in my room, quietly in the dark
- 16:04, it took me a while to adjust to
- 16:06understand the controls.
- 16:09Link not jumping, it’s done
- 16:12automatically. The camera being a bit
- 16:14stuck from time to time.
- 16:15At the beginning, you struggle. I'm
- 16:17sorry, you struggle, and I see it today
- 16:19with my daughter.
- 16:20When she started the adventure, I felt
- 16:22like I was seeing myself, actually.
- 16:25I really feel like I'm seeing myself.
- 16:27So yes, modernizing the gameplay is
- 16:30something to be appreciated.
- 16:32Having this freedom in the controls is
- 16:35what we've always wanted in the end.
- 16:39If the graphics impress. The controls
- 16:41likely constitute one of the most
- 16:43important evolutions of this version.
- 16:46Our hero finally benefits from controls
- 16:48adapted to current standards. without
- 16:50however denying the identity of his
- 16:51original adventure.
- 16:53The free camera is pleasant to use and
- 16:56the button for jumping manually truly
- 16:58changes the way you approach movement.
- 17:01I tell you, even there, I had a hard
- 17:03time getting used to it. Why?
- 17:06Because precisely, I was conditioned to
- 17:08play a character that jumps
- 17:11automatically. I fell I don't know how
- 17:14many times.
- 17:16There you go, it's muscle memory.
- 17:19uh from a cliff, from a platform,
- 17:20etcetera because I forgot to press the
- 17:23jump button.
- 17:24It drove me crazy.
- 17:27And yet this jump button, frankly it's a
- 17:29joy for many things.
- 17:34Gone are the days when you had to rely
- 17:36solely on rolls to move a little faster
- 17:38; Link can now sprint, which makes long
- 17:41traversals much less laborious.
- 17:43And yes, right?
- 17:45Ah well, the little trick, we all knew
- 17:46it, didn't we. You had to do rolls back
- 17:49then to move very fast and get from one
- 17:51area to another when you didn't have
- 17:54Epona. Of course.
- 17:56Here Nintendo understood very well and
- 17:59listened to the community. We are going
- 18:01to bring a button.
- 18:03You hold it down and you run. However,
- 18:06what I would have liked is to add that
- 18:09button to the left joystick as well.
- 18:13You press once and the character runs.
- 18:16No, because here, you are forced to
- 18:18press A all the time, all the time, all
- 18:21the time to run, well, sprint.
- 18:23And it's annoying.
- 18:25It's annoying. Why not put it directly
- 18:27on the key, well, the joystick?
- 18:29There you go.
- 18:30Maybe the developers thought that it...
- 18:32Well, maybe there are old-timers who
- 18:34still prefer to run quietly, without
- 18:36really pressing the button, etcetera.
- 18:39But in the end, no, it's a very welcome
- 18:42control and it should have been, once
- 18:45again, included in the left joystick.
- 18:49You press once and then he sprints all
- 18:52the time. Period.
- 18:54I find it a pity. Well, afterwards you
- 18:56get used to it. You keep holding down
- 18:57the A button, you dash and that's it.
- 19:00These additions may seem obvious today,
- 19:02but they truly transform the comfort of
- 19:04the game entirely.
- 19:07The inventory also benefits from nice
- 19:09modernizations with a quick item
- 19:11scrolling system that avoids multiplying
- 19:13pauses and menu manipulations.
- 19:16like in Breath of the Wild, I could have
- 19:18added that.
- 19:20So we really have a menu like in Breath
- 19:22of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, a
- 19:24straight, squared-off menu, and it works
- 19:26.
- 19:28Uh, another thing, the iron boots and
- 19:31hover boots can be assigned to the d-pad
- 19:34shortcut to be equipped or removed
- 19:36instantly.
- 19:38So look at this image on the left side,
- 19:39we have the directional pad.
- 19:41So you can put the hover boots, the iron
- 19:44boots. On top, you put—well, it’s no
- 19:47longer called the Lens of Truth but the
- 19:50Glasses of Truth. It’s been changed.
- 19:53So on top you put either masks or
- 19:55glasses, and on the bottom, the boots.
- 19:57There you go, and it's a joy, I'm
- 20:00telling you. It’s a joy.
- 20:03So the Lens of Truth has also been
- 20:05redesigned as glasses that can be
- 20:07assigned to a shortcut with a rather
- 20:09nice eye-opening visual effect.
- 20:12Very clean.
- 20:13Another small improvement: moving
- 20:15underwater with the iron boots is now
- 20:17less tedious.
- 20:18Ah, that feels so good. Especially the
- 20:20Water Temple.
- 20:22So instead of moving forward,
- 20:26Link walks faster. Ta-da-da, and
- 20:28thankfully so.
- 20:30And it feels great.
- 20:32And we move forward, there you go, with
- 20:35better fluidity. This is the kind of
- 20:37thing we want.
- 20:39Everything is designed to limit
- 20:41interruptions and make the adventure
- 20:43more dynamic.
- 20:45And it feels great.
- 20:47The Switch 2’s gyroscope is another
- 20:49excellent surprise.
- 20:52That also feels great. Aiming becomes
- 20:54particularly precise and we quickly take
- 20:56a liking to this way of controlling our
- 20:58movements. Whether with the slingshot or
- 21:01the bow, the adjustments are intuitive
- 21:03and pleasant.
- 21:04Veterans of the old versions should
- 21:06appreciate this increased comfort, while
- 21:08newcomers will benefit from more
- 21:10accessible controls.
- 21:12There you go, even the shooting
- 21:14challenges gain in fluidity, to the
- 21:15dismay of the merchants who were hoping
- 21:17to extract a few more rupees from us.
- 21:21Well yes, there are mini-games in the
- 21:23game.
- 21:24We’re thinking of the games with the
- 21:26slingshot, the bow, and so on.
- 21:29So yes, it brings better comfort in
- 21:32terms of handling.
- 21:35The console also puts its microphone to
- 21:37good use.
- 21:38It is now possible to play Ocarina
- 21:41melodies by humming directly into it or
- 21:43even by using a real instrument.
- 21:46I found that funny.
- 21:49Though, I think it’s a feature meant for
- 21:53kids because, yes, it’s well-suited for
- 21:56that.
- 21:57I can hardly see myself continuing the
- 21:59adventure like that. Oh my, it’s every 3
- 22:03seconds.
- 22:07No, you try it once, it’s funny. You
- 22:10whistle, and it works. It works. The
- 22:13thing understands everything, it detects
- 22:14everything, it works. Okay, but you go
- 22:16back to the buttons very quickly. Kids,
- 22:18on the other hand, are really going to
- 22:20love it, either with the ocarina sold
- 22:23separately or by using a real ocarina.
- 22:26Uh, for those who have one at home, just
- 22:29try by whistling, singing, or humming
- 22:31along.
- 22:32There you go, it works, the kids are
- 22:34going to love it.
- 22:36Obviously, I tried it, I'm telling you,
- 22:38I tried it, it works and I found it fun
- 22:40, but after a while I switched back to
- 22:41the classic controls, that'll do.
- 22:43Thanks, goodbye.
- 22:46Anyway, Link visually adjusts his finger
- 22:49positions on his ocarina while Navi
- 22:51performs a little choreography dedicated
- 22:54to each melody.
- 22:56It's true that the finger placement,
- 22:58well, everything was thought out to have
- 23:00a beautiful animation on screen and it's
- 23:02great. A fun feature that cleverly
- 23:04exploits the machine's capabilities.
- 23:08We almost want to dig out our old
- 23:09instruments, provided we don't scare off
- 23:11the neighbors.
- 23:13I wrote this sentence because I remember
- 23:16making an ocarina, uh, what do you call
- 23:19it?
- 23:20Out of clay.
- 23:22Oh boy, I don't even remember that you
- 23:24heat up in the oven.
- 23:26I made an ocarina. Well, it didn't work
- 23:27.
- 23:30But hey, I did make one.
- 23:33Finally, those who might have lost track
- 23:35of their journey can check the timeline
- 23:37.
- 23:38And that's also a welcome idea because
- 23:40in Ocarina of Time, if you leave it for
- 23:43a week, where was I?
- 23:46But really, the '98 game, when you're in
- 23:48school, I only played on weekends
- 23:50because my mother only allowed games
- 23:52then, not during the week, just on
- 23:53weekends.
- 23:55Wait, where was I?
- 23:58So yes, this new tool is well
- 24:00implemented.
- 24:02It summarizes progress, current
- 24:04objectives, and the major milestones of
- 24:06the adventure. Everything is presented
- 24:09through a large tapestry retracing
- 24:11Link's adventures.
- 24:13A welcome aid for resuming a game after
- 24:16several days away or for remembering the
- 24:19next destination when our memory starts
- 24:22acting up.
- 24:24Not everything is perfect, however. The
- 24:26controls on Epona's back remain just as
- 24:28clunky and unpleasant as ever. But what
- 24:30have you done?
- 24:32What have you done?
- 24:34They kept the exact same controls with
- 24:37Epona.
- 24:38Back then, it was already clunky and
- 24:40annoying. But when you have the horse
- 24:42heading toward a wall and you try to
- 24:44turn right, and it just gets stuck, it
- 24:46does...
- 24:48I'm just trying to go back a little bit
- 24:50. Ah, you just want to scream.
- 24:53I think they could update that.
- 24:57I think people are going to complain,
- 24:59and they'll release an update later to
- 25:01make the horse controls a bit more fluid
- 25:03.
- 25:04I hope so, because it's very heavy, very
- 25:07heavy.
- 25:09We would have appreciated it if this
- 25:11part had received the same modernization
- 25:13work as the rest of the adventure.
- 25:16They changed everything except that.
- 25:20I don't understand.
- 25:22It's a shame to keep such clunky
- 25:24controls when so many other aspects have
- 25:26been improved.
- 25:29They changed everything except for
- 25:34this.
- 25:36I'm telling you, it's just heavy.
- 25:46Story, length, and soundtrack.
- 25:49So, we’re going to talk about all that
- 25:51nicely.
- 25:53So, a melody that crosses generations.
- 25:55Yes, something rather funny.
- 25:58My daughter, who had never played
- 26:00Ocarina of Time—obviously with a dad who
- 26:02loves the franchise—she already knew the
- 26:04tunes. The melodies literally cross
- 26:06through.
- 26:07The ages are also included in recent
- 26:11games.
- 26:12With remixes, new notes, and so on, but
- 26:15the tones are still there.
- 26:18And I think Ocarina of Time was a great
- 26:20foundation for all the subsequent ones
- 26:22in terms of music.
- 26:24For the rest, we find exactly the great
- 26:26adventure that marked the history of the
- 26:28saga. Link’s journey keeps its structure
- 26:30, its characters, its dungeons, and its
- 26:32puzzles. Now, the puzzles have been
- 26:34modified for many things.
- 26:36Basically, to try to bring something
- 26:38fresh, new, and original.
- 26:41They removed the somewhat clunky puzzles
- 26:42from back then and replaced them with
- 26:44stuff that's a bit more accessible,
- 26:46let's put it that way.
- 26:49What was annoying back then isn't
- 26:51anymore, and I personally prefer it that
- 26:55way.
- 26:56Fans of the original episode will
- 26:58happily rediscover the iconic locations
- 27:01of the kingdom of Hyrule, while new
- 27:03players will be able to discover an
- 27:05adventure that largely helped shape the
- 27:073D action-adventure game.
- 27:09It was a foundation, really, for video
- 27:11games.
- 27:12The dungeons in particular retain that
- 27:15ingenious construction that pushes us to
- 27:17observe the surroundings, understand
- 27:19their architecture, and intelligently
- 27:21use the items recovered as we progress.
- 27:25So that hasn't changed.
- 27:27It really is globally the same game.
- 27:33But regarding content, one new feature
- 27:36deserves to be highlighted anyway. The
- 27:40monster amphitheater. It's actually nice
- 27:42. It's nice. What is it?
- 27:45Well, this new area gathers the statues
- 27:47of the enemies and bosses we have
- 27:49defeated.
- 27:51We can thus examine their models and
- 27:53replay the boss battles at will.
- 27:56A nice little touch for combat fans and
- 27:58those who wish to revisit certain
- 28:00memorable confrontations.
- 28:02So, you know that when you go back into
- 28:04a temple, originally, you can't fight
- 28:05the boss again.
- 28:07Well here, they made a system where you
- 28:09can return a bit during these battles,
- 28:11and there's a scoring aspect with the
- 28:14timer and everything that goes with it.
- 28:18There you go, it's nice, but that's
- 28:19where I'm getting at.
- 28:20Exactly.
- 28:22On the other hand, we regret the absence
- 28:24of any real novelty related to the story
- 28:27.
- 28:29The map remains fundamentally identical
- 28:32, and no new location, no uncharted area
- 28:35, nor any expansion extends the
- 28:37adventure.
- 28:39Nothing.
- 28:41Everything is the same. Everything is
- 28:43the same in the layout of Hyrule.
- 28:47But you might think, maybe they'll add a
- 28:49new location.
- 28:51They went with a remake. It's great.
- 28:53Maybe there are ideas abandoned in '98
- 28:55that they can include in this game.
- 28:58Zip.
- 29:00After having finished the game 100%.
- 29:02I have all the hearts.
- 29:03I have all the hearts. I have—I have
- 29:05everything. I have everything. I have
- 29:06all the Gold Skulltulas. I have—I have
- 29:08everything.
- 29:10We would have liked to discover an
- 29:11additional bonus storyline.
- 29:13I would have really loved that.
- 29:16For those who go through the trouble of
- 29:18getting everything, arriving at the end
- 29:19, once the credits roll, adding a little
- 29:20something extra.
- 29:23You see, there's not even the Master
- 29:25Quest, there's not even that.
- 29:30It's really just the same game but
- 29:32prettier, a remake actually. A remake.
- 29:35I'm going to tell you something
- 29:36regarding remakes.
- 29:38With remakes, every time we have a
- 29:41divided community, players totally
- 29:44divided.
- 29:46By that, I mean there are people who
- 29:48expect a game that is reworked in a
- 29:50certain way, keeping the base game in
- 29:53terms of adventure and exploration, but
- 29:55with quite a bit of difference, quite a
- 29:58bit of change.
- 29:59I'll take Resident Evil 2 as an example
- 30:01.
- 30:01I know the game by heart, the '98 game,
- 30:04I know it by heart.
- 30:06But with the remake, I was surprised to
- 30:08rediscover things and areas.
- 30:11The work was redone on many things, even
- 30:13in terms of the scenario, and that's
- 30:15pleasing.
- 30:17Final Fantasy 7's remake as well, they
- 30:19changed a lot of things, and we aren't
- 30:21looking at a copy-paste of the games of
- 30:23yore.
- 30:24And on the other side, we have a
- 30:26community that complains about Final
- 30:28Fantasy 7, for example, and who really
- 30:31want a copy-paste but with modernized
- 30:33graphics. So no matter what, one way or
- 30:36the other, we will never manage to
- 30:38satisfy people when proposing remakes.
- 30:40There you go, either a remake with
- 30:43differences, or a copy-paste remake.
- 30:47This Zelda is a carbon-copy remake in
- 30:49terms of progression, story, and
- 30:51experience; it’s truly a carbon-copy
- 30:54remake.
- 30:56So it’s going to satisfy a whole segment
- 30:57of players.
- 30:59Usually, I’m the type who likes new
- 31:01features, having extra content, and so
- 31:04on.
- 31:05Nintendo doesn't want to take risks;
- 31:07they want to keep the Ocarina of Time
- 31:10story as is and bring it to old players
- 31:13, but also to the new generation.
- 31:16It works. Usually, once again, I’m the
- 31:19type who wants them to change quite a
- 31:21few things, but here I have nothing to
- 31:23say.
- 31:26I mean, it’s a beautiful remake, a
- 31:29well-thought-out remake that keeps
- 31:31exactly the same story, but a story that
- 31:34has been visualized and elevated with
- 31:36cinematics and voice acting, and it
- 31:39works, it really works.
- 31:43However, what I would have liked, once
- 31:46the credits rolled, is to have an extra
- 31:49mode or something, maybe an idea
- 31:52abandoned in '98.
- 31:56You see it in the early trailers, for
- 31:58example, in the first Ocarina of Time
- 32:01trailers from 1998, excuse me, you see
- 32:03Link getting the Triforce.
- 32:06Why not make a little extra mode with
- 32:09abandoned ideas, you know, with
- 32:11modernized graphics, with a separate
- 32:14sequence?
- 32:16That would have been really cool.
- 32:19Really cool.
- 32:21And on the other hand, the Master Quest
- 32:22, I think people are going to complain.
- 32:24Why not include it? That, I don't
- 32:25understand.
- 32:26But regardless, I find it a shame not to
- 32:28bring something extra to the table. So
- 32:30yes, you’re going to tell me there’s the
- 32:32amphitheater. OK, the amphitheater is a
- 32:34very good idea. The monster amphitheater
- 32:36, going back to smash some monsters.
- 32:39But I wanted that little something new,
- 32:41because in the end, you’re just hitting
- 32:42monsters you’ve already defeated in the
- 32:44game.
- 32:45I wanted that little something like, I
- 32:47don't know, a hidden cave somewhere that
- 32:50I blow up with a bomb, and as soon as I
- 32:52enter the place, it leads me toward the
- 32:54forest from Majora's Mask.
- 32:56You know, to tease, I don't know, the
- 32:58sequel to a remake or something. Anyway
- 32:59, you get what I mean?
- 33:01Or whatever, a lost idea, something
- 33:02extra, something extra—that’s what I
- 33:04would have wanted.
- 33:06There, I have the right to say it,
- 33:08because having played the game inside
- 33:11and out when I was a kid, obviously, I
- 33:13think it would have been cool to have a
- 33:15bit of original content in the story.
- 33:19However, and I repeat, the fact that
- 33:21it's a copy-paste remake, it works and
- 33:24it holds up.
- 33:26Once again, to such an extent that I
- 33:28told my daughter, stop the game, really
- 33:30stop. on the Nintendo 64 because I want
- 33:32you to play it that way with those
- 33:35graphics, those cinematics, that voice
- 33:37acting and that music. There you go,
- 33:39it's the same game.
- 33:41So later, she can go back to it on
- 33:42Nintendo 64 and discover the game, how
- 33:44it was made for us back then, and so on
- 33:46. But there you have it. Anyway, where
- 33:48was I?
- 33:50Uh, why not have integrated a few ideas
- 33:52imagined and then abandoned during the
- 33:54original development in the 90s? There
- 33:57was material to surprise veterans
- 33:58without distorting the work.
- 34:01We understood that Nintendo doesn't want
- 34:03to change the story, doesn't want to
- 34:04modify the overall aspect of the
- 34:06experience and the adventure.
- 34:09OK, but adding a little something extra
- 34:10would have been cool for us veterans,
- 34:12for the old-timers, you know, who have
- 34:14been here forever.
- 34:16So the respect for the original is
- 34:18commendable, but a small dose of new
- 34:21content would have made this version
- 34:23even more essential, really.
- 34:26So yes, they changed the puzzles, they
- 34:27changed a few things, etc., but it's not
- 34:29exactly striking.
- 34:31I'm opening a parenthesis here, I don't
- 34:32remember which journalist said, "Yes, it
- 34:33takes 15 minutes to find the sword." I
- 34:35don't know what they were on.
- 34:37It's it's no longer in the same place.
- 34:39It's, you'll see, it's in the same place
- 34:41but without being in the same place.
- 34:43Anyway, well, you'll see.
- 34:47For players discovering this epic for
- 34:48the first time, count on about 25 hours
- 34:50to reach the end, depending on the pace
- 34:52and time spent exploring.
- 34:54Those accustomed to it who already know
- 34:56the paths to take and the puzzles to
- 34:58solve will naturally progress much
- 35:00faster.
- 35:01But beyond the game length, it's above
- 35:02all the pleasure of returning to this
- 35:03universe that makes the difference. And
- 35:05what about the soundtrack? The
- 35:07re-orchestrated music is absolutely
- 35:09superb.
- 35:10The cult melodies benefit from richer
- 35:12arrangements and an interpretation that
- 35:15gives them a new dimension without
- 35:17losing their identity.
- 35:19We particularly appreciate the work done
- 35:21on the transitions between day and night
- 35:23. That is really so good. When the moon
- 35:26rises, the notes calm down and slow down
- 35:29gradually before regaining their energy
- 35:32when the sun returns.
- 35:35The music accompanies the passage of
- 35:38time with remarkable delicacy.
- 35:41But really, everything is thought out so
- 35:43that the whole thing is in harmony with
- 35:45our senses.
- 35:46The sight, the ears, uh the action on
- 35:49screen, the whole thing, but really
- 35:52really it's it's bravo.
- 35:55The big new feature also lies in the
- 35:57full voice-over for the cutscenes. A
- 35:59historic first for this entry.
- 36:02The French dubbing brings a real, but a
- 36:05real—excuse me—a real added layer of
- 36:08immersion and gives more life to the
- 36:10characters.
- 36:12When it comes to the ending, which is
- 36:15quite iconic in the Zelda universe, with
- 36:18voice-over and polished cutscenes, you
- 36:20get goosebumps.
- 36:24As I told you earlier, when you see "
- 36:26The End" on your screen, you don't want
- 36:28it to stop because, precisely due to the
- 36:30work done on the voice-over and the
- 36:32cutscenes, you don't want it to end.
- 36:37Right now, I'm replaying it in Japanese
- 36:38, it's amazing, but in Japanese it's
- 36:40just as amazing. Anyway, moving on.
- 36:43The cinematic sequences have also been
- 36:45reworked with animations and direction
- 36:47that fully highlight the dialogue.
- 36:50The visuals, the movement, the music,
- 36:52and the voices come together perfectly
- 36:53to offer particularly successful
- 36:55sequences.
- 36:57The result works wonderfully and gives
- 37:00new intensity to moments that
- 37:01aficionados already know by heart.
- 37:12Alright, time for Uncle Marti's
- 37:14conclusion, let's go.
- 37:16The years haven't gotten the better of
- 37:17the Hero of Time.
- 37:19We almost wish we could wipe our
- 37:21memories to discover this odyssey in
- 37:23this new light.
- 37:25Returning to the lands of Hyrule with
- 37:27such a level of polish is an immense
- 37:29pleasure, especially since every
- 37:30improvement seems designed to make the
- 37:33experience more enjoyable without
- 37:34distorting its identity.
- 37:36The art direction has been elevated.
- 37:39The lighting effects are magnificent,
- 37:41the environments are teeming with detail
- 37:43, and the re-orchestrated music gives
- 37:45new scope to melodies we already know by
- 37:47heart.
- 37:49Add to that full French voice-over for
- 37:52cutscenes, reworked animations, a frame
- 37:55rate around 60 frames per second, and
- 37:57greatly modernized controls.
- 38:00This remake succeeds in deeply evolving
- 38:02a video game monument without betraying
- 38:04what made it strong.
- 38:07Of course, not everything is flawless.
- 38:10The few technical imperfections are more
- 38:12visible on a television screen.
- 38:14Epona's controls could have used a
- 38:16serious refresh, and we especially
- 38:18regret the absence of any real new
- 38:21narrative content.
- 38:22The Monster Amphitheater is a nice
- 38:26addition.
- 38:27It's cool.
- 38:29But it's not enough to renew the
- 38:31adventure for those who already know
- 38:33every corner of the kingdom.
- 38:36We would have really liked to discover a
- 38:38new area, an original dungeon, or even
- 38:40some narrative elements that were
- 38:42imagined back in the day and then
- 38:43abandoned.
- 38:46I even want to tell you that back in the
- 38:49day with Link's Awakening on Game Boy,
- 38:51when the transition to Game Boy Color
- 38:54happened, they even added an extra
- 38:56temple.
- 38:58to play with the colors.
- 39:01I mean, you could do that, add a temple
- 39:04, something extra that gives you a
- 39:06little bonus you don't find in the base
- 39:09game, something, you know, that's what
- 39:11I'm a little disappointed by.
- 39:17Anyway, respecting the original work is
- 39:19a great thing, but a surprise of that
- 39:22scale would have added even more value
- 39:24to this new edition.
- 39:27The fact remains that expectations
- 39:28aren't necessarily the same depending on
- 39:30our history with the saga.
- 39:32Old-timers will find an adventure that
- 39:34transported them to a unique universe
- 39:36when they were younger, with the joy of
- 39:39rediscovering iconic places in a totally
- 39:41different light.
- 39:44Certain passages, certain puzzles, and
- 39:46certain battles retain that very special
- 39:48flavor despite the years that separate
- 39:51us from their first discovery.
- 39:54As for the new generation, they can
- 39:56finally understand why this episode
- 39:58holds such an important place in gaming
- 40:00heritage without having to deal with the
- 40:02technical limitations of a 1998
- 40:04production.
- 40:07The title clearly needed such a facelift
- 40:09, and this version pays it a very
- 40:11beautiful tribute.
- 40:14In the end, we take immense pleasure in
- 40:16finding Link, Navi, and the lands of
- 40:18Hyrule on a more modern machine.
- 40:21This adventure retains all its magic,
- 40:24its sense of exploration, its ingenious
- 40:26dungeons, and its ability to make us
- 40:29travel through time.
- 40:31We certainly would have appreciated a
- 40:32bit more audacity regarding new content
- 40:34, but it's hard to deny our pleasure in
- 40:36the face of such polished work.
- 40:39This new version reminds us why The
- 40:40Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time holds
- 40:42such a special place in video game
- 40:44history.
- 40:45Consoles evolve, graphics gain
- 40:47refinement, controls modernize, but some
- 40:50adventures simply don't age a day.
- 40:55And when the first notes of the ocarina
- 40:57ring out again, we immediately
- 40:59understand why we are so happy to return
- 41:01to Hyrule.
- 41:03We are looking at the rebirth of a
- 41:06gaming masterpiece.
- 41:11The pros, ladies and gentlemen: the
- 41:14enhanced art direction, the successful
- 41:16lighting and visual effects, the free
- 41:19camera, manual jumping and sprinting
- 41:21that modernize the controls, smoother
- 41:24exploration thanks to the removal of
- 41:27certain transitions, the French voice
- 41:29acting, perfect immersion, the
- 41:31absolutely superb re-orchestrated music
- 41:34, the Timeline and the Monster Arena on
- 41:37a complete cartridge.
- 41:39I’m putting it in my pros and cons.
- 41:42The game, it’s a physical edition.
- 41:44There’s no game card download nonsense
- 41:46or whatever.
- 41:48The cons, a few technical imperfections
- 41:51more visible in TV mode.
- 41:54Epona's controls are still as clunky as
- 41:56ever.
- 41:57No new locations or real narrative
- 41:59expansions. But then again, I think that
- 42:02suits a part of the community.
- 42:05You know, once again, I saw it with the
- 42:07Final Fantasy 7 remake. The community
- 42:09was totally, totally divided. So here,
- 42:12the fact of having a game that’s really
- 42:15identical but with all these extras, all
- 42:17these perks, well, it’s going to be
- 42:20great for everyone; it’s going to please
- 42:22everyone in that group of players.
- 42:26Anyway, it’s an adventure I recommend.
- 42:28It’s an essential game to play on
- 42:31Nintendo Switch 2.
- 42:33I wish I could have had my memory wiped
- 42:35.
- 42:35My score is crazy.
- 42:38I gave it a 19, despite the flaws,
- 42:40because when you put the controller down
- 42:43—and there aren't many games that manage
- 42:46to make me feel that—when you turn off
- 42:48the TV and you have that feeling of
- 42:51melancholy, as I said at the beginning
- 42:53of this video, and you lie there with
- 42:56your eyes open in the dark, you tell
- 42:58yourself: "I just had a wild adventure.
- 43:00" I can't give it any less; it's
- 43:04impossible.
- 43:06And when you wake up in the morning,
- 43:08having finished the game 100%, and you
- 43:11say, "I want to go back." Yes, it's an
- 43:14excellent title.
- 43:17It's an excellent title.
- 43:20Stop, my daughter, stop playing the '98
- 43:21game.
- 43:23You really need to play this game like
- 43:25this.
- 43:26Well, she could play the 5th one.
- 43:30That's a bit—that's a bit complicated.
- 43:31Playing in secret at home is a bit
- 43:33complicated. But either way, she could
- 43:34play the 5th one comfortably. But I
- 43:36really want her to discover this
- 43:38experience. I want her to feel things.
- 43:42I want all her emotions to be stirred up
- 43:45as she discovers the adventures of Link
- 43:47, Zelda, and the villain Ganondorf.
- 43:51I want her to say to herself at the end
- 43:53, "I did it." I want her to see the
- 43:56credits roll at the end and, as the
- 43:58screen freezes, I want to see her eyes,
- 44:00her eyes just locked in place. And
- 44:03that's what I felt, I'm telling you; I
- 44:05didn't think I'd feel that for this
- 44:08remake.
- 44:11We saw it in the trailers, I had my
- 44:13concerns about the copy-paste issues,
- 44:15maybe it would make me grind my teeth
- 44:18and so on.
- 44:20And that's really what it is, isn't it?
- 44:21There really isn't any major new content
- 44:23in terms of locations and so on.
- 44:26I told myself, well, in the end, this
- 44:28isn't going to thrill me, it's just a
- 44:30remake, they just made the game look
- 44:32better.
- 44:33But no,
- 44:35the fact that they reworked the
- 44:37cutscenes, the fact that they reworked
- 44:40the...well, brought in voice acting,
- 44:42reworked the environments, brought in
- 44:44something much more organic, much more
- 44:47alive, much more poetic, bringing a
- 44:49sense of melancholy when you travel
- 44:51through time between adult Link and
- 44:53child Link, and then you go talk to
- 44:56characters and you have this sadness
- 44:58when you chat with NPCs you've met and
- 45:00grown attached to.
- 45:04and in the future, seeing them depressed
- 45:06, well, it actually works, it works.
- 45:10Bravo.
- 45:11And ultimately, it also changed my
- 45:13perception of remakes.
- 45:15Because in my head, for a remake, the
- 45:18publisher or studio absolutely has to
- 45:20change things in the story while keeping
- 45:23the foundation to bring in something new
- 45:26.
- 45:27But here, in the end, I tell myself that
- 45:29a copy-paste isn't actually that bad.
- 45:32It’s not terrible, either.
- 45:35So, they’ve managed to reconcile me with
- 45:37the idea of having an identical game.
- 45:41We had that with Demon's Souls on
- 45:42PlayStation 5.
- 45:43It really is a copy-paste identical
- 45:45version and so on, but there isn't much
- 45:47emotion, I find, compared to a Zelda
- 45:49like this one, Ocarina of Time.
- 45:51Well, here, they pulled it off. Bravo.
- 45:53So yeah, I’m happy for them to bring
- 45:56back old games now. Copy-paste, why not
- 45:58a Final Fantasy 7 remake, but a
- 46:00copy-paste of the '98 game.
- 46:03I’d take that, I think I’d sign up for
- 46:06it, and I say why not, because if they
- 46:08can make me feel so much with a game
- 46:10like this, I figure other publishers and
- 46:13companies can do it too.
- 46:16If Nintendo did it, the others can do it
- 46:18even more with these high-end consoles,
- 46:19right? There you go, that's why it
- 46:21deserves its score.
- 46:23It deserves its score because, once
- 46:25again, when you turn off the TV and you
- 46:28have this warm, slightly strange feeling
- 46:30thinking "more, I want more," I can't
- 46:33give it any less, it’s just not possible
- 46:35.
- 46:36I I just can't.
- 46:39Because in the end, the most important
- 46:41thing in all this, despite the little
- 46:42technical flaws here and there that we
- 46:44can see, is the experience.
- 46:47The experience.
- 46:50And I guarantee you, as a side note,
- 46:51there are indie games that bring you
- 46:53just as many feelings like that.
- 46:56And yet, we're not talking about
- 46:57triple-A games in terms of graphics.
- 46:59And yet, the experience makes you say,
- 47:02wow, this game with three colored pixels
- 47:05made me feel so many emotions that I
- 47:07just have to give it a crazy rating.
- 47:11There you go.
- 47:13But here, Nintendo found the right
- 47:15balance between the visuals, the
- 47:18cinematics, the progression, the
- 47:20rendering, while keeping the core
- 47:23material to bring to old and new modern
- 47:25players an Ocarina of Time that left its
- 47:28mark in 1998.
- 47:32And there you have it, ladies and
- 47:34gentlemen, I'll leave you to it.
- 47:37I'll let you react, excuse me, in the
- 47:38comments as usual, and I invite you to
- 47:40follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Twitch,
- 47:41and TikTok at Marti Japan.
- 47:43And I'll see you very soon. Alright,
- 47:44cheers! Kisses! Ciao! Ciao!
