1:04camera is going to do justice here but I
1:06think it just looks so neat the sun
1:08coming up in the East there on the other
1:10side of that Ridge and the orange glow
1:12from the Sun is just reflecting off of
1:14the clouds making this just a really
1:17beautiful scenery welcome back to the

1:27below today I am reviewing the ultra
1:31Olympus 6 check it out a really good
1:35shoe that uh exceeded my expectations
1:38but I do have two pretty big uh gripes
1:44in this video I will be talking about
1:45the build quality the Comfort the
1:48performance and the value of the shoe I
1:51should state that Ultra did send this
1:52shoe for the purpose of review but know
1:54that all thoughts and opinions are
1:56strictly my own and check out my

2:56this run and the review in the ultra
2:59Olympus 6 but voice over Chad why don't
3:03you tell us about some of the specs and
3:04features of the shoe Ultra States
3:08looking for Comfort on Ultra Trail Races
3:10all day trail sessions and Technical
3:12hikes the ultra Olympus 6 trail running
3:14shoe delivers with extra cushioning and
3:17grip for trail runs short or long as for
3:20some of those specs and features you get
3:22their original foot shaped fit which is
3:24ultra's roomiest fit compression molded
3:27EVA foam midsole engineered Mish up
3:30which is a dual layer durable overlays
3:32throughout the upper Vibra Mega grip
3:34outsole which looks to have 5 maybe 6 mm
3:38lugs Gator trap hook and loop tab 33 mm
3:42of stack in the heel and toe for a zero
3:44drop weighing in at 345 G or 12.2 o in a
3:49men size 9 and a US MSRP of
3:52$175 I should also mention that all the
3:54b-roll footage you're about to see was
3:56recorded after this run so you're seeing
3:58the shoe in its true state Chad back
4:00over to you
4:30so I've ran in the Olympus 6 a handful
4:32of times about 50 mil and I know that's
4:34not hundreds of miles but speaking of
4:39quality I think Ultra has improved our
4:42quality quite a bit and I don't think
4:43you're going to run into any real
4:45quality issues in this shoe you already
4:48saw some of the specs and features but
4:49you do get that vium out soole that
4:52should last very very long time they did
4:56add just a little bit more rubber
4:58compared to version five particularly in
5:02the heel area the back portion of that
5:04outo although it's a minuscule
5:08difference I do wish that alure would
5:10have added a little bit more rubber
5:12particularly in the mid section of that
5:15out soole I think that would have helped
5:16the durability and the longevity of the
5:18shoe but all in all the rubber that is
5:21on that outsole is going to last you a
5:24very long time moving up into the
5:26midsole I think that is going to be the
5:28area of the shoe that lasts the least
5:30amount of time the midsole is just your
5:33standard compressed Eva type of midsole
5:36uh nothing overly special about it
5:38should last a few hundred miles but I do
5:40have some concerns that it'll compress
5:44over time especially if you're a heavier
5:46uh runner and I think from a quality
5:49perspective that that is the weak point
5:51in the overall package the one thing
5:54that's going to limit you from reaching
5:56you know 600 700 800 miles moving on to
6:00the upper a lot of quality and over
6:04engineering built into that upper huh
6:07there's the
6:08Sun so that upper is an engineered mesh
6:12uh it's a dual layer so you have the
6:14outermost layer where your perforations
6:17are and then you have like an inner
6:19layer where the tongue is gusseted and
6:22that wraps all the way through the
6:24inside of the toe box I'm not seeing a
6:26single quality uh issue with it so far
6:29but it is worth mentioning that that
6:31dual layer does compromise a little bit
6:34in breathability you also get some very
6:38durable very thick overlays I'll show
6:41you so you're getting a really durable
6:43overlay here on the uh outside of the
6:45shoe nice Stout toe box there with these
6:50overlays and again some additional
6:52overlays on the inside of the shoe and
6:55then around the eyelet
6:57chain and up and around around the uh
7:00back of the heel here so a lot of
7:02overlays and they're not just your
7:04standard TPU overlays that you find in
7:06most shoes they're just really thick
7:09super durable I think it's a little over
7:12engineered and then moving around to the
7:15heel of the shoe you get some extra uh
7:18fabric where the uh padding is around
7:21the ankle and the heel it's really built
7:23up pretty stoutly back there the tongue
7:26is really nice quality the laces are
7:28also really nice nice quality uh they're
7:30kind of grippy uh or textured rather uh
7:34so they stay tied so the overall quality
7:37package is actually quite nice and way
7:41more than I expected in fact I would say
7:43it's over engineered I would describe
7:46this shoe kind of like a your work truck
7:48it's not just your standard light duty
7:50truck but rather your super
7:53heavyduty Workhorse of a truck you know
7:56like the Ford F550 type of uh Workhorse
7:59truck but the overall quality build of
8:02the Olympus 6 definitely exceeded my
8:04expectations I'm going to give it a 9
8:06out of 10

8:33moving on to comfort comfort of the
8:36Olympus 6 also exceeded my expectations
8:38I wasn't sure what to expect because I
8:40hadn't run in the Olympus of the past
8:44but I was surprised at how comfortable
8:46this shoe is it's one of those shoes
8:48that you can run all day in the Mell
8:51does a great job at absorbing impact of
8:53the trail especially on the downhill
8:55it's nice and soft perhaps at the
8:58expense of energy turn I also went true
9:01to size in this shoe and the overall fit
9:04is really nice now this is ultra's
9:07original fit you're going to get a nice
9:09and wide uh shoe especially in that toe
9:12box lots of room for your toes to spay
9:15out for those easy casual and long days
9:18I really became fond of having just a
9:21little bit of extra room in the midfoot
9:23and especially in the toe box and my
9:26foot never went numb again lots of good
9:29blood flow so just keeping things nice
9:31and comfortable inside the shoe Ultra
9:34shows the perfect padding and density of
9:37padding in the in the shoe for the
9:40tongue I wish Ultra would put this
9:42tongue in all their shoes cuz it was
9:45just that good and that comfortable the
9:47laces are also nice and wide and lay
9:50flat across the top of your foot again
9:53just keeping things nice and comfortable
9:55now the heel while it's fine or adequate
9:58for me there's some really nice padding
10:00along the ankle and the heel but I feel
10:03like the padding is maybe a little too
10:05low in the shoe it's help the heal of my
10:07foot in place well enough but for some
10:11especially if you've had problems with
10:13the Olympus of the past I think you're
10:16going to continue to experience the same
10:18heel lack of heel lock in this shoe as
10:22well sorry about the wind so the upper
10:26material feels really nice around my
10:28foot it flexes and moves with your foot
10:31but not at the expense of feeling sloppy
10:34and then last thing worth mentioning
10:35about the overall Comfort is that my
10:38feet never feel uh tired the shoe isn't
10:42overly uh flexible or agile but it does
10:46a good job at offering the support that
10:49you would need on the trails has a
10:51really wide Landing platform and that
10:54midsole with the combination of the outs
10:56soole is thick enough that it offers
10:58really good protection against sharp
11:01rocks and roots and such I've never felt
11:03like this shoe needed a rock plate it
11:05doesn't have one surprisingly I feel
11:07like I get decent ground uh feedback not
11:11the best but good enough to know what is
11:14going on underneath my foot so overall
11:18Comfort has surprised me and this shoe
11:22is definitely more plush it's definitely
11:25soft and there's a lot of Creature
11:28Comforts built into to the shoe but
11:30overall I really can't complain about
11:32the comfort so I'm going to give Comfort
11:35a 9 out of
11:3910 all right so the sun is now behind
11:42the ridge
11:44there see it reflecting off the mountain
11:47the hillside behind me there all right
11:49in true Ultra fashion we're going to
11:52hike up this hill so performance is one
11:54area where it's kind of a mixed bag in
11:57the Olympus 6 um on one hand performance
12:01is great on the other hand it's not what
12:04I want so let me explain as an all day
12:09you know comfortable trail running shoe
12:12something that you can just put in the
12:14miles and have that all day all night
12:18foot
12:19Comfort yeah this shoe performs quite
12:22well from the performance perspective of
12:24a shoe that makes you want to do more
12:27want to do more miles this shoe lack a
12:30little bit it makes me wanting just a
12:32little bit more from the shoe and I
12:35think the biggest reason is the weight
12:38this shoe weighs in at
12:40345 G in a US uh men's size 9 that is a
12:45pretty heavy shoe and I think for a
12:48daily trainer that's probably actually
12:51not a bad thing if you get used to
12:54running in a heavy shoe then when you
12:56swap into a more lightweight shoe you're
12:58going to feel quite a bit more uh Lively
13:01and quick under feet but I feel like the
13:03overall heftiness of this shoe weighs
13:06down its performance potential the out
13:09soole performance is phenomenal I
13:12mentioned that I wish there was a little
13:13bit more rubber especially in the
13:14midfoot area uh the midsection of the
13:17out soole but I've never really needed
13:20more traction or more grip so just take
13:23that for what it's worth but I think
13:24from a longevity perspective having more
13:26rubber would help the midsole does a
13:28great job at keeping things uh soft and
13:31plush and comfortable but from a
13:33performance perspective it doesn't give
13:36much back in the form of energy return I
13:38would not say that this shoe is an agile
13:41or Nimble shoe the midsole is just a
13:43little too thick for that and the
13:45performance of the upper is uh actually
13:48pretty good it holds my foot in place
13:50better than I thought it would
13:51especially considering that hits their
13:54wider fit and you can feel that width in
13:57the midfoot a little bit in the heel and
13:59especially in the toe box but there's a
14:01lot going on with that upper a lot of
14:03extra build and material and overlays I
14:06think Ultra went a little over the top
14:08trying to add a lot of extra quality and
14:10comfort features into this shoe and it's
14:13at the expense of a little bit of
14:15performance future Chad here just wanted
14:17to add one more thought on performance
14:19it kind of ties into the value a little
14:20bit I thought of the Perfect Analogy you
14:23know when you're writing a paper whether
14:25it's in high school or a college you're
14:28writing a paper and you add a lot of
14:33extra content and words and paragraphs
14:36and you read through it and you think
14:37it's all great but because of all that
14:40extra fluff that you added you kind of
14:42missed the mark a little bit and because
14:44of that you don't get the strongest of
14:46grades that's kind of what this shoe is
14:49ultra put in a lot of extra things I
14:52feel like that on the surface make the
14:54shoe seem really really great but they
14:58almost missed the mark and that's why I
15:00feel that performance is a little bit
15:03lacking as well as value I hope that
15:05makes sense all right present Chad back

15:21your thoughts on the Olympus 6 have you
15:23had the Olympus of the past and are you
15:25eyeing the Olympus 6 from a performance
15:28perspective I think this shoe is best
15:30for those long days maybe those Ultras
15:33where you're not looking to set a PR so
15:37overall performance I'm going to give it
15:39a seven out of 10 that's okay it gets
15:42the job done but it's not great in my
15:45book but if you're looking to buy this
15:47shoe going into it knowing that it is
15:49going to be a heavier shoe uh but you're
15:52just looking for something that more of
15:54a plush uh experience then yeah I think
15:58it'll do just fine for you but I want to
16:02move on to the value of the Olympus 6
16:05that's one other area that I have a
16:07little bit of gripe with
16:10$175 us MSRP that is a lot of money and
16:16I feel like there's a lot of other shoes
16:17that you may want to consider first at
16:20that price point are you getting your
16:23money's
16:24worth yeah but honestly at that price
16:28point it wouldn't be My First Choice
16:31tofo Ultra Venture you're getting an
16:34overall great uh package and build and
16:36good choice of materials quality
16:39materials so the overall value I'm also
16:41going to put at
16:43seven uh maybe even six out of
16:5110 so do I recommend the
16:53shoe I would recommend the shoe if you
16:56have enjoyed the ultra olymp es of the
16:59past but if you have not enjoyed them I
17:03wouldn't recommend it full transparency
17:05full honesty if you came to me asking
17:08for a super comfortable ultr running
17:11trail shoe I would mention this shoe to
17:14check out but I wouldn't necessarily
17:17recommend it and that's no diss on Ultra
17:21I think Ultra put in a good effort to
17:23offer something that is going to be
17:25really good and there's definitely a lot
17:27to like about the Olympus 6 but it's
17:30just the overall heavy weight of the
17:32shoe at that higher cost point I
17:35wouldn't highly recommend the shoe
17:37probably worth checking out but not the
17:40first shoe that would perhaps come to
17:42mind this is a shoe that I would do and
17:45will continue to do a lot of my daily
17:48training in but when I'm feeling a
17:50little more py or energetic I'm not
17:53going to want this shoe under
17:56fooot I could see running uh you know
17:59Ultras 100 MERS and such in this shoe
18:02okay so we're going to wrap things up
18:04I've got one more Ridge to climb up and
18:07over and then we'll be about 2 mil from
18:11the car at that point wrapping up
18:13today's run around 11 M and 1,800 ft of
18:17elevation gain I have a lot more coming
