  2. 0:04you know taking a bird a wild bird like
  3. 0:07that and that in my opinion is the
  4. 0:09epitome of wildness and taking it to the
  5. 0:12point where it's actually your willing
  6. 0:13hunting partner to me it's like nothing
  7. 0:15short of a miracle hey
  8. 0:17girl on it
  9. 0:23[Music]
  10. 0:38[Music]
  11. 0:39I have been a maniac about falconry ever
  12. 0:42since I was a kid as early as sixth
  13. 0:44grade people would ask me you know hey
  14. 0:47what do you want to be when you grow up
  15. 0:48and you know and they expect me to say a
  16. 0:50policeman or some other and I would say
  17. 0:52I want to be a falconer they look at me
  18. 0:54like what's that you know and I well the
  19. 0:56person who flies Birds you can't make
  20. 0:57any money at that I'm like I don't care
  21. 0:59about that I mean I just want to fly
  22. 1:00Birds you
  23. 1:03know falconry is the hunting of wild
  24. 1:06game with a trained Raptor that's the
  25. 1:08definition of FAL trapping a raptor and
  26. 1:10and training a raptor is is not easy but
  27. 1:13it's not overly difficult finding game
  28. 1:16and catching game is by far the most
  29. 1:18difficult part and we are generally
  30. 1:19hunting three four five six seven days a
  31. 1:22week during the hunting season our best
  32. 1:25historical evidence says that falcony
  33. 1:27starts uh in the Middle East the classic
  34. 1:29cradle of civilization about 10,000
  35. 1:32years ago when a lot of our other
  36. 1:33animals were domesticated and those
  37. 1:35advances in animal husbandry led to
  38. 1:38people taking wild Raptors and using
  39. 1:41them as hunting Partners we are Hunters
  40. 1:43first and foremost and we do have to
  41. 1:45follow all of the game laws that any
  42. 1:47other Hunter would follow uh we do have
  43. 1:49some extended season a little bit of
  44. 1:51flexibility with some of the migratory
  45. 1:52game for ducks we do get the full uh
  46. 1:55full allotment of days to hunt with our
  47. 1:57Falcons uh but we do have a reduced bag
  48. 1:59limit so a gut Hunter has a six bird bag
  49. 2:01limit we have a three bird bag limit
  50. 2:03this is a GPS device it's like for dogs
  51. 2:07but much lighter weight
  52. 2:21[Music]
  53. 2:30okay this let's just
  54. 2:38flush on
  55. 2:43it there you go y that my boys is house
  56. 2:49[Music]
  57. 2:55done hey girl
  58. 3:03you see how her eyes are almost kind of
  59. 3:04almost oval a little bit they're kind of
  60. 3:06squinted a little bit that is the uh the
  61. 3:09sign of a happy bird she's like yes
  62. 3:12everything's good she's like Yep this is
  63. 3:14a good day and that just means she'll
  64. 3:17she'll decide I'm okay for one more day
  65. 3:18and hang around cuz this a wild bird you
  66. 3:20know and she could decide at any time if
  67. 3:22I didn't treat her right she could say
  68. 3:23hey I'm not doing this anymore I'm going
  69. 3:27and that happens man I mean people push
  70. 3:29their Birds and don't treat their Birds
  71. 3:30right sometimes you know treat them more
  72. 3:32like a a tul versus a living breathing
  73. 3:35wild thing that that has a
  74. 3:38Viewpoint the type of falconry we're
  75. 3:40doing today is called waiting on
  76. 3:42falconry and that falconry is about a
  77. 3:45th000 years old and originates in
  78. 3:47northern Europe and it's just like
  79. 3:49hunting with a gun or hunting with a bow
  80. 3:51you use the right tool for the job today
  81. 3:54we're using paragan Falcons to hunt
  82. 3:56ducks and their colloquial name is the
  83. 3:59duck [ __ ] to become a falconer in Texas
  84. 4:02is uh pretty difficult it requires a lot
  85. 4:04of steps uh the first step is to get a
  86. 4:07sponsor who's already a licensed
  87. 4:08Falconer that is agrees to watch over
  88. 4:10you for those first couple of years and
  89. 4:12then you actually take a 100 question
  90. 4:13tests and have to make an 80 or better
  91. 4:15and that test generally covers
  92. 4:16everything to do with falur including
  93. 4:18laws as well as health all those kinds
  94. 4:21of things and then you also then build
  95. 4:22facilities that meet certain
  96. 4:24requirements that are inspected by a
  97. 4:25game board and then only then can you
  98. 4:27get a permit and then you have a
  99. 4:28falconry permit which allows you to get
  100. 4:30a raptor for falconry generally people
  101. 4:32trap their first Raptor and uh it can be
  102. 4:35anything from several different species
  103. 4:36and then that sponsor watches over that
  104. 4:38person for the first two years as they
  105. 4:40train their birds and go from
  106. 4:44[Music]
  107. 4:49there good
  108. 5:00[Music]
  109. 5:05[Applause]
  110. 5:08get it girl the
  111. 5:12water
  112. 5:19thanks come on girl
  113. 5:27[Music]
  114. 5:34so we're talking about a wild animal
  115. 5:36that is used to hunting on its own in
  116. 5:38fact when you first capture a wild bird
  117. 5:40it thinks at first that you're just
  118. 5:41going to eat it that's all they know you
  119. 5:43teach it to know you're going to feed it
  120. 5:45and you use that food inducement to inch
  121. 5:48by inch day by day bring them along into
  122. 5:51a situation where they're coming to you
  123. 5:53for food they're come into a lure I use
  124. 5:56either a drone or a kite to raise bait
  125. 5:58way up in you know and I'll teach the
  126. 6:00bird to go for that bait and when
  127. 6:02they're going up two or 300 ft to get
  128. 6:04that bait before they make it I'll start
  129. 6:06serving them a bagged game of some kind
  130. 6:08to uh teach them that oh when they're
  131. 6:10going up to watch over their shoulder to
  132. 6:12keep an eye on me to um uh to see what's
  133. 6:16going to happen once I've got them doing
  134. 6:18that then it's just a matter of going
  135. 6:21out to ponds when they're going up to
  136. 6:22the bait and they're looking over their
  137. 6:23shoulder at me I'll flush the Ducks lead
  138. 6:25them along slowly but surely until
  139. 6:27they're just without even realizing it
  140. 6:29working together and once we've got that
  141. 6:31Bond you know it's that's the best part
  142. 6:34about it once the birds are looking
  143. 6:35forward to it once you go out to pick
  144. 6:37your bird up and it's literally shaking
  145. 6:39in anticipation like a hunting dog just
  146. 6:42say God we get to go out again that's
  147. 6:44about as good as it
  148. 6:47gets here girl she musts to go look at
  149. 6:49her the body line she say oh okay I'll
  150. 6:51do it again give me another chance dad
  151. 6:55[Music]
  152. 7:11[Applause]
  153. 7:12[Music]

  164. 8:02you go got
  165. 8:03it you know taking a bird a wild bird
  166. 8:07like that that in my opinion is the
  167. 8:08epitome of wildness and taking it to the
  168. 8:12point where it's actually your willing
  169. 8:13hunting partner these are both wild
  170. 8:15birds that you saw me fly today uh to
  171. 8:18where they just don't want to leave you
  172. 8:19they want to work with you to me it's
  173. 8:21like nothing short of a miracle that you
  174. 8:23can make that work
  175. 8:26[Music]
  176. 8:29w
