  1. 0:01and recycling is only one small part of
  2. 0:04what makes the greenest building in
  3. 0:05North America so green UBC researchers
  4. 0:09have designed and built a structure that
  5. 0:11sets a new standard for
  6. 0:13sustainability every detail from floor
  7. 0:15to ceiling from lighting to Plumbing has
  8. 0:18been engineered to minimize its impact
  9. 0:20on the environment and the result is
  10. 0:23quite startling Brian coxford
  11. 0:27reports it's not a building that at
  12. 0:29first stands out from the rest of the
  13. 0:31architecture at UBC but if you look
  14. 0:34closer the wow factor sets in it's a
  15. 0:37structure that lives in breeds and in so
  16. 0:39many ways it's an example of what we
  17. 0:41desperately need if we want a livable
  18. 0:43planet in future years we are the
  19. 0:46greenest building in North America uh
  20. 0:48we're going to um go for the highest
  21. 0:51ranking in terms of sustainability
  22. 0:53performance that exist the greenest most
  23. 0:55environmentally friendly building in
  24. 0:57North America it goes well beyond the
  25. 1:00solar and shade panels that allow it to
  26. 1:02generate more energy than it
  27. 1:04uses no water from rain or sewage leaves
  28. 1:08the center for interactive research on
  29. 1:10sustainability at UBC these plants grow
  30. 1:13in water reclaimed from the building
  31. 1:15sewage and it's odor-free we're wasting
  32. 1:18nothing no waste water generated in this
  33. 1:21building goes back to the uh Municipal
  34. 1:24systems it's all treated here and the
  35. 1:26nutrients are used to feed the plants
  36. 1:30the water in the toilets and urals has
  37. 1:32been reclaimed from sewage in a
  38. 1:34treatment facility in the basement rain
  39. 1:36water collected on the roof is stored
  40. 1:38and purified here they drink it in the
  41. 1:40building reclaimed water is also used to
  42. 1:43irrigate the building's living roof we
  43. 1:45got a green roof and we got some uh
  44. 1:48strawberry here so what it does is uh it
  45. 1:51acts as a kind of like an insulation for
  46. 1:53the roof for below um so it uses less
  47. 1:56energy the scientists inside also
  48. 1:59practice what they preach looking for
  49. 2:01sustainability Solutions in this project
  50. 2:04a sneeze machine simulates a sick
  51. 2:06patient in a hospital with this
  52. 2:08experiment researchers hope to manage
  53. 2:10energy and germs with better ventilation
  54. 2:13making our health facilities safer for
  55. 2:15everyone and hospitals are known to
  56. 2:17consume a lot of energy so we're trying
  57. 2:19to achieve uh a win-win situation
  58. 2:21whereas you reduced U Hospital energy
  59. 2:24consumption at the same time improve the
  60. 2:26air quality there's no expensive air
  61. 2:29conditioning here air flow hot and cold
  62. 2:31is engineered by cooling the atmosphere
  63. 2:33with shade outside the windows thousands
  64. 2:35of monitors control levels of CO2 carbon
  65. 2:38monoxide heat and light there's also
  66. 2:40extensive use of beetle wood making this
  67. 2:43UBC building a model that sets the
  68. 2:45standards for future Architects and
  69. 2:47Engineers to follow I some good things
  70. 2:51happening in British Columbia Chris who
  71. 2:53knew there was a sneeze machine at UBC
  72. 2:56amazing all right thanks very much Deb
