Full transcript
- 0:00probably the biggest thing is trust the
- 0:01people you hire so that's one thing i
- 0:03thought thanos did really well was
- 0:04hiring but it seemed like
- 0:07they didn't the management didn't listen
- 0:08to the brilliant scientists that they
- 0:10actually hired the television series the
- 0:12dropout has chronicled the fascinating
- 0:14and wild story of elizabeth holmes and
- 0:16her defunct company theranos
- 0:19i feel like if you're watching this
- 0:20video you've definitely seen the others
- 0:22that we've done on it so i'll definitely
- 0:24just be kind of skimming the fraud thing
- 0:26and speaking more about tyler schultz
- 0:28the whistleblower who started the
- 0:30takedown of the entire company he's the
- 0:32man who went to the wall street journal
- 0:34with the whole story and the person who
- 0:36provided enough evidence to possibly
- 0:38land both elizabeth holmes and sonny
- 0:40balwani in prison for fraud
- 0:43now the owner and operator of a
- 0:44biomedical science company himself we
- 0:47catch up and see just what tyler schultz
- 0:49is thinking as the theranos trials take
- 0:51place
- 0:52today we're covering tyler schultz
- 0:54tomorrow though you decide let us know
- 0:56in the comments down below who you think
- 0:57we should cover on the next episode of
- 0:59where are they now while you're there
- 1:01we'd really appreciate it if you could
- 1:02like this video so we can keep making
- 1:04more just like it let's get into it not
- 1:06much is known about tyler's early life
- 1:08and honestly who really cares what we
- 1:10care more about is his ascent into the
- 1:12theranos company and how he obtained the
- 1:14information that would take the company
- 1:16down a little briefing on what theranos
- 1:18actually is
- 1:20it was a private company that touted
- 1:22itself as a marvel that breakthroughs
- 1:24health technology the company claimed to
- 1:27have tech that could administer blood
- 1:28tests using just a few drops of blood
- 1:30rather than a standard full vial
- 1:33these claims were unfounded and they
- 1:35conned a bunch of investors into
- 1:36donating millions of dollars for a
- 1:38company that had a product that was
- 1:40extremely faulty with unreliable results
- 1:43in fact theranos would lie about the
- 1:45tests being done on their machine and
- 1:47sometimes they used commercial machines
- 1:49to administer blood tests after the news
- 1:52broke and the company faced a string of
- 1:54legal and financial issues it was
- 1:56estimated that elizabeth holmes net
- 1:58worth dropped from 4.5 billion dollars
- 2:00to virtually nothing tyler schultz is
- 2:03the grandson of george schultz a
- 2:05theranos board member and the former
- 2:07secretary of state for president ronald
- 2:09reagan
- 2:10tyler himself worked for the company and
- 2:12was extremely close with his grandfather
- 2:15but while in the labs tyler noticed that
- 2:17the theranos equipment dubbed edison
- 2:19machines frequently failed quality
- 2:21control checks and produce widely
- 2:23varying results
- 2:24this was extremely dangerous for medical
- 2:26patients who relied on accurate
- 2:28information for test results from cancer
- 2:31diagnosis to whether or not to require
- 2:33surgery
- 2:34he had originally met elizabeth holmes
- 2:36in 2011 while he was visiting his
- 2:38grandfather tyler describes that he
- 2:40quote fell in love with her vision of
- 2:42instant and painless blood tests
- 2:44after he got his degree in chemical
- 2:46engineering tyler interned at the
- 2:48company then was hired on full time
- 2:50tyler specifically was hired on to be
- 2:52quality assurance for test results and
- 2:54so would run blood samples a few times
- 2:56to make sure that the results were
- 2:57accurate
- 2:58one such result tipped him off when it
- 3:00was claimed that an std was able to be
- 3:02detected with 95 accuracy
- 3:05when tyler ran the blood through again
- 3:07he found that accuracy was much closer
- 3:09to 65
- 3:11that meant that if 100 people infected
- 3:13with the disease were tested only with
- 3:15the edison machine as many as 35 of them
- 3:18would likely incorrectly conclude that
- 3:19they were disease free he also noticed
- 3:22that the edison machines were
- 3:23continually flunking quality control
- 3:25standards he also said that the
- 3:27notoriously rough-handed sunny balwani
- 3:30had pressured the lab employees to
- 3:32ignore the failures and run blood tests
- 3:34on the machine anyways contrary to
- 3:36accepted lab practices so he sent a
- 3:39concerned email directly to elizabeth
- 3:41holmes who did not respond
- 3:44instead sonny replied quote we saw your
- 3:46email to elizabeth before i get into
- 3:49specifics let me share with you that had
- 3:51this email come from anyone else in the
- 3:53company i would have already held them
- 3:54accountable for the arrogant and
- 3:56patronizing tone and reckless comments
- 3:58tyler also stated that he would have
- 4:00been fired had it not been for his
- 4:02grandfather so he quit
- 4:05as he was leaving the office he got a
- 4:07concerned call from his mother who told
- 4:09him to stop whatever he was about to do
- 4:12because sonny had called and threatened
- 4:14her stating that whatever tyler did
- 4:16would be met with the harshest extent of
- 4:18the law tyler then went directly to his
- 4:20grandfather who effectively brushed him
- 4:23off the theranos board member and
- 4:25tyler's own grandfather said that the
- 4:27blood testing machines worked so well
- 4:29they were being used in military
- 4:31hospitals
- 4:32tyler knew that that was a lie
- 4:34his grandfather then attempted to
- 4:36pressure him into signing a
- 4:37confidentiality agreement after they
- 4:39found out that tyler had spoken to a
- 4:41reporter
- 4:42he continually was pressured to sign
- 4:44non-disclosure agreements which would
- 4:46effectively silence him forever
- 4:48he kept refusing and learned that he was
- 4:50being followed by private investigators
- 4:53his parents pleaded with him to sign the
- 4:55form or they would have to sell the
- 4:56house to cover legal fees
- 4:59that being said they later stated tyler
- 5:01had acted exactly like the man we raised
- 5:03him to be we are extraordinarily proud
- 5:05of him then in 2015 the article was
- 5:08published and all contact with ndas had
- 5:11ceased now though as the trials occur
- 5:13and elizabeth holmes and sonny belwani
- 5:15are facing the fullest extent of the law
- 5:17for their actions tyler opened up once
- 5:20more about how things have been since
- 5:21the television series the dropout aired
- 5:24tyler now works for a biotechnology
- 5:26company and is collaborating with a team
- 5:28of researchers to try and build a
- 5:30portable device that would be capable of
- 5:32diagnosing a dozen diseases from a
- 5:34person's blood saliva and vital signs he
- 5:37also recalls meeting with his
- 5:38grandfather before the trials began
- 5:40they hadn't spoken in seven months
- 5:43he said he told his grandfather how he
- 5:45was so disappointed in the lack of
- 5:46support from him throughout the entire
- 5:48ordeal
- 5:49when describing his emotions during the
- 5:51elizabeth holmes trial quote i decided
- 5:53to deal with it by playing my guitar
- 5:55super loud i probably disturbed my
- 5:57neighbors i had a lot of nervous energy
- 6:00and i can totally understand why he blew
- 6:03the whistle on the company when he was
- 6:05only 22 years old
- 6:07and now being 31 this has been building
- 6:10for quite some time
- 6:12although he was at work during the last
- 6:14trial he recalls his phone buzzing with
- 6:16a message from his wife quote it was a
- 6:19text in all caps guilty
- 6:21all of a sudden it was just a wait was
- 6:24lifted it's over i can't believe it's
- 6:26over
- 6:27after that he and his family decided it
- 6:29was worth a toast so they popped some
- 6:31champagne together to celebrate although
- 6:34tyler wasn't the only whistleblower he
- 6:36was the first to report to others about
- 6:37the irregular findings to regulators
- 6:40when speaking to his grandfather before
- 6:41elizabeth's trial went down tyler
- 6:43recalls stating quote i am pleading with
- 6:45you as your grandson please do the right
- 6:48thing
- 6:48he begged his grandfather to distance
- 6:50himself from theranos publicly
- 6:53although george isn't on the board of
- 6:54directors anymore after the company
- 6:56ceased production he is on the board of
- 6:58counselors
- 6:59in response to tyler's pleas he was
- 7:02non-committal he remained on the board
- 7:04of counselors and the two hadn't seen or
- 7:06spoken to each other since that meeting
- 7:09so far during the trials tyler has not
- 7:11yet been asked to testify against
- 7:12elizabeth holmes although now that
- 7:15sonny's trial is underway i feel like
- 7:17they may very well ask him to testify
- 7:19there given the emails coming directly
- 7:21from him
- 7:22he and his parents obviously not
- 7:23including his grandfather celebrated
- 7:25when elizabeth went down for her crimes
- 7:27and was convicted of fraud she is
- 7:29currently awaiting a sentence for a
- 7:30guilty verdict and could face up to 20
- 7:33years in prison
- 7:34similarly sonny is currently awaiting
- 7:36his verdict and sentencing if found
- 7:38guilty which let's be honest he will be
- 7:41it's been really great to see that
- 7:42tyler's parents haven't abandoned him
- 7:44like his grandfather did although i
- 7:46totally understand their fear towards
- 7:48standing up to what once was a
- 7:49multi-billion dollar company tyler did
- 7:51the right thing
- 7:53currently he is the ceo of his own
- 7:55biomedical science company that focuses
- 7:57on women's fertility issues while he
- 7:59says he would never become another
- 8:00elizabeth holmes he does concede that he
- 8:02is another startup founder who now
- 8:04better understands the high pressure
- 8:06context that might create someone like
- 8:08holmes in a very recent economic times
- 8:11article like a couple days ago recent
- 8:13tyler also stated that although his
- 8:15grandfather never apologized to him he
- 8:17did tell tyler that he was right about
- 8:19theranose all along the two reconciled
- 8:22very briefly before george salt passed
- 8:24away in 2021
- 8:26i guess in a way that can be closure
- 8:28enough for the family rift caused by the
- 8:30dubious ethics of theranos well guys i
- 8:32know we've done like a million dropout
- 8:34videos but this one was genuinely
- 8:36exciting to make tyler is a modern day
