  2. 0:01been killed in military action against
  3. 0:03Iran and a third service member is
  4. 0:05missing. US Central Command, which is
  5. 0:08responsible for American military
  6. 0:10activity in the Middle East, announced
  7. 0:12on social media that the casualties
  8. 0:14happened in Jordan yesterday during
  9. 0:16defensive action against ballistic
  10. 0:18missile and drone attacks by Iran.
  11. 0:20There's been a full week of renewed
  12. 0:22hostilities between Iran and the US
  13. 0:25after President Trump declared 10 days
  14. 0:27ago that that temporary ceasefire
  15. 0:29agreement was over. Here's our world
  16. 0:31news correspondent, Joe Inwood.
  17. 0:34>> For seventh night, Iran and the US
  18. 0:36exchanged fire.
  19. 0:38Here, Iranian missiles on route to
  20. 0:40targets including in Kuwait and Jordan
  21. 0:43where at least one is now confirmed to
  22. 0:45have struck a US base.
  23. 0:47In a statement on social media, the US
  24. 0:49military said, "Two US service members
  25. 0:52in Jordan were killed in action as US
  26. 0:54Central Command and partner forces
  27. 0:56defended against Iranian ballistic
  28. 0:58missile and drone attacks."
  29. 1:00Additionally, one service member is
  30. 1:02currently missing.
  31. 1:03It brings to 16 the US losses in the war
  32. 1:06with Iran.
  33. 1:08This was the moment that six service
  34. 1:10personnel killed in a previous strike
  35. 1:12were repatriated.
  36. 1:15The US has also struck targets across
  37. 1:17Iran with the focus being Hormozgan
  38. 1:20province in the south. Here, a bridge
  39. 1:22destroyed.
  40. 1:23A top adviser to Iran's supreme leader
  41. 1:26said that if the strikes continue, they
  42. 1:28will return to all-out war.
  43. 1:32>> I declare that both the negotiations and
  44. 1:34war are over. But, if in the next two or
  45. 1:37three days, the Americans continue the
  46. 1:38war, we will enter a phase of complete
  47. 1:41offense and destruction.
  48. 1:46>> Neither side is currently giving any
  49. 1:48indication they are ready to back down.
  50. 1:51The news of the first US casualties from
  51. 1:53enemy fire since April will further
  52. 1:56reduce the hopes for de-escalation.
  53. 1:59Joe Inwood, BBC News.
  54. 2:02>> Let's speak now to our correspondent
  55. 2:03Nick Johnson, who is in Washington for
  56. 2:05us, and this will be very sobering news
  57. 2:07for the US, Nick.
  58. 2:11>> Very much so, Rita. Yes, US Central
  59. 2:12Command, which is responsible for
  60. 2:14military operations in the Middle East,
  61. 2:16hasn't disclosed the identity of those
  62. 2:18have been killed or released any more
  63. 2:19specifics
  64. 2:21into the incident itself. We have heard
  65. 2:23from the Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
  66. 2:24on social media, who said, "Godspeed,
  67. 2:27heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens
  68. 2:30our resolve." Now, the US does have a
  69. 2:32permanent presence at bases in Jordan,
  70. 2:35and actually last night the Jordanian
  71. 2:36military
  72. 2:37said it had intercepted 10 missiles,
  73. 2:40which had been flown in from Iran, but
  74. 2:43had caused and reported no damage.
  75. 2:45Iranian state media, as well, has also
  76. 2:47said that 50 people had been killed and
  77. 2:49500 injured in the renewed conflict over
  78. 2:53the past couple of weeks. But, if you
  79. 2:54look how far and fast things have
  80. 2:56escalated in the past 10 days or so,
  81. 2:59tip-for-tat limited exchanges to
  82. 3:01American deaths, the US striking deeper
  83. 3:04into Iran itself, it's difficult at this
  84. 3:06stage to see a route back to talks
  85. 3:08around the table.
