- 0:02Welcome to lesson two of the interior
- 0:04design playbook, expert lessons to
- 0:06streamline, scale, and succeed. I'm Meg.
- 0:08I'm an interior designer, and I am
- 0:09thrilled that you're here. Now, in our
- 0:10last lesson, we reviewed a full
- 0:12documentation set and explored the three
- 0:14core playbook strategies to speed up
- 0:16your drawing and documentation process.
- 0:18Starting today and over the next few
- 0:19lessons, we're going to dive deeper into
- 0:21actually creating the sheets. And along
- 0:22the way, you'll learn how to optimize
- 0:24your workflow to save hours on each
- 0:25project. In this lesson, we'll start
- 0:27setting up your project's drawing set.
- 0:28We'll begin by importing the existing
- 0:30property floor plan and create an
- 0:32interior construction plan for
- 0:33renovation. You will learn how to import
- 0:35existing floor plans in DWG, DXF, PDF,
- 0:39or image format directly into Rayon
- 0:41perfectly to scale. You'll also learn
- 0:42how to organize your layers and sheets
- 0:44from the start to keep your process
- 0:45clear, consistent, and fast. And you'll
- 0:47learn how to convert them into accurate
- 0:48construction plans for interior room
- 0:50dividing and space planning. As always,
- 0:52I'll be using Rayon Design where I built
- 0:53the complete drawing set that we will
- 0:55recreate together in this course.
- 0:56starting from a single imported floor
- 0:58plan all the way to furniture, lighting,
- 1:00FFN, mood boards, and more. Stay tuned
- 1:02for the next lessons on how to create
- 1:03each of those sheets as well. Make sure
- 1:05you grab the free drawing template
- 1:07linked down below so you can follow
- 1:08along, customize it for your own
- 1:10projects, and start streamlining your
- 1:11setup right away. Let's get started. We
- 1:13are in our rayon workspace, and we are
- 1:16going to import a DWG of our existing
- 1:19drawing to scale. Then we will review
- 1:21the best way to organize your drawing to
- 1:22work efficiently, redesign the project,
- 1:25and add all of our documentation. So,
- 1:27let's go ahead and import that file
- 1:29together. I'm just in my Rayon
- 1:30workspace. I'm going to go ahead and hit
- 1:32import, and then we're going to go find
- 1:34our DWG file, which is right here. I'm
- 1:36going to hit open. And then it's going
- 1:38to prompt me if I want to rename it,
- 1:39which I do not. So, I'm just going to
- 1:41say import. First up, it's going to ask
- 1:43us if we want to, you know, double check
- 1:45the scale. So, it's saying pick a known
- 1:47length by setting two points. So, um, if
- 1:50there is a length that I know, I can
- 1:52just use some of the dimensions in here.
- 1:54I can just click two different points
- 1:56and tell it what that length is. Now,
- 1:59it's telling me that that's 3.28 ft. So,
- 2:01that looks right to me. So, I'm just
- 2:03going to say that's good. I don't need
- 2:04to rescale this drawing. Once the file
- 2:06does import, you're going to find it
- 2:08over here under layers under your
- 2:10canvases. This is what we call a model
- 2:13canvas. So canvases, if you're not
- 2:15totally sure about what those are, they
- 2:17are the way that Rayon uses to organize
- 2:20uh the drawing set. So we're going to
- 2:23end up creating multiple model canvases
- 2:25for each drawing. So floor plan,
- 2:26sections, spec sheets, um etc. Um as
- 2:29seen in the final drawing set that I
- 2:31showed you. Um and then we'll also have
- 2:33one paper canvas. So over here if I say
- 2:35new canvas, you can see there's a model
- 2:37canvas or a paper canvas. So, the paper
- 2:39canvas is where you basically showcase
- 2:41all of your um drawing sheets. The model
- 2:44canvas that we have right now is called
- 2:46import. I'm going to just rightclick it
- 2:48and rename it to let's just say floor
- 2:50plan. Okay. So, once we have it renamed,
- 2:53um this is basically where we're going
- 2:54to be retracing this file. Now, before
- 2:57we get started doing that, I do want to
- 2:59um organize our layers a little bit
- 3:01before we uh get, you know, too far into
- 3:03it. I am going to start by selecting all
- 3:05these layers that it brought in for the
- 3:07CAD file. And let's actually just create
- 3:10a new layer called CAD. And then we can
- 3:13just drag and drop these and like nest
- 3:16them in there. So make sure that you get
- 3:17all of them. Zero we want to keep out.
- 3:19But everything else can go into that
- 3:21CAD. Now it's just nice and organized.
- 3:23So if we want to like hide them or lock
- 3:25them or whatever, uh we can just, you
- 3:27know, select all of these little layers
- 3:29in here and say hide or lock. Um, let's
- 3:32just go ahead and lock them because, uh,
- 3:34what that's going to do is it's not
- 3:35going to let me select any of those
- 3:37lines that it brought in, which is a
- 3:39positive because I just want to be able
- 3:41to snap to the lines. I don't want to be
- 3:42able to move the lines. Let's also
- 3:44create a couple more layers while we're
- 3:46over here. Like, for instance, let's do
- 3:48one for openings. Let's do one for
- 3:51walls. Let's do one for
- 3:55annotations. And then along the way,
- 3:57we'll probably end up adding some more
- 3:59like for furniture and lighting and
- 4:00stuff. But for now, this should do good
- 4:03for us for today. Now that we've got
- 4:05those, let's go ahead and start
- 4:09redesigning our project. So,
- 4:10essentially, we're going to start by uh
- 4:12tracing all of this exterior work that
- 4:15we have here, and then we'll end up
- 4:16designing the interior. So for this
- 4:19particular project, uh this is a summer
- 4:21ranch house and the clients asked for
- 4:23two master bedrooms, two children
- 4:25bedrooms, and a large main space for
- 4:27cooking, dining, and living. Now the
- 4:29exterior shell is uh set in stone. So
- 4:31we're not going to be modifying that. We
- 4:33do want to trace it, but we're not going
- 4:34to modify it. And then it's just up to
- 4:36us as designers to create an interior
- 4:38allocation of space. Now, one of Rayon's
- 4:41features that makes this design phase so
- 4:43quick is being able to use the walls and
- 4:46the zone tools that are parametric. So,
- 4:49like when you make a change, they update
- 4:50with the change. So, instead of just
- 4:52line work, like once I draw a wall
- 4:54enclosure on the canvas, I can actually
- 4:56move that and edit it flexibly. When I
- 4:58place a zone within it, I get an
- 5:00automatic tag with square footage. And
- 5:02then again, that will adjust as I make
- 5:04any movements on the walls um or
- 5:06anything like that. And this helps a ton
- 5:08when you are dividing the space quickly
- 5:10with, you know, internal rooms and
- 5:11areas. So, let's go ahead and get
- 5:13started. Um, we are going to start by
- 5:16creating two different wall types. We
- 5:17want to do an exterior wall type and an
- 5:19interior wall type. So, to do that,
- 5:22let's go ahead and make sure that we are
- 5:23on our wall layer. And then we'll select
- 5:26our wall down here. And we're just going
- 5:27to draw two different walls off to the
- 5:29side here in our model space. So, I'm
- 5:31just going to draw one wall. And then
- 5:34we're going to draw another wall.
- 5:36So, we're going to use these two walls
- 5:38to create our styles. So, over here
- 5:40under walls, you can see it's asking for
- 5:42the thickness. So, I know that these
- 5:44walls are 12 in thick. So, 1 ft thick.
- 5:47Um, if you don't know the thickness, you
- 5:49can just grab your dimension tool and
- 5:50just click on either side. So, you can
- 5:52see here that says 1 ft. So, back up to
- 5:54this little tester wall. I'm going to
- 5:56type in 12 in on the thickness up here.
- 5:59And you can see that that thickened it
- 6:00up. We can also add like a hatch or a
- 6:03color or a texture to this uh wall type.
- 6:06I'm going to just do a color so it's
- 6:08easier when I am uh you know drawing
- 6:10this to explain. But just to kind of
- 6:12click through here, you can adjust with
- 6:14hatches, textures, and then you can also
- 6:17change the size, you can make it bigger,
- 6:19you can rotate, whatever you need to do.
- 6:21But just to keep it simple, we'll just
- 6:23do this blue one here. And then once you
- 6:25get this style the way that you want it,
- 6:27you can just hit plus save style. and
- 6:29then we'll call it exterior wall. Um,
- 6:31make sure that all these settings are
- 6:33right. And then we've got our first
- 6:34tile. Next, we want to do the same kind
- 6:37of thing, but make it an interior wall.
- 6:38So, um, 6 in is fine for our interior
- 6:41wall. Again, with the color or hatching
- 6:44or texture. Um, I'm just going to make
- 6:46this pink. Um, of course, you can choose
- 6:49whichever one you'd like. You can also
- 6:50change the opacity and again the
- 6:52rotation, the size, everything. Once
- 6:54we're happy with that, we'll just hit
- 6:55plus under save style and go to or just
- 6:58type in interior wall here. And now you
- 7:02have these two walls set up as different
- 7:04styles in your file. And you can double
- 7:06check that by going over to styles right
- 7:09here. And then scroll all the way down
- 7:11to walls. And you can see our two walls
- 7:13that we have just created have populated
- 7:15here. Next up is tracing the space. So
- 7:20what I have here is all exterior walls.
- 7:22So, what I want to do is start by uh
- 7:25drawing my walls. I'm going to click the
- 7:26wall button down here. I also want to
- 7:29actually make sure again that I am on my
- 7:32wall layer. So, we're on the wall layer.
- 7:34So, when I get into my walls, I can just
- 7:36click this little eyropper now. And I
- 7:38can ey style that I want to use. So, I'm
- 7:41just going to ey drop on the exterior.
- 7:42And I'm going to start by clicking this
- 7:45edge here. And essentially just start
- 7:48tracing this space. Now, if you, you
- 7:51know, make your wall too long or too
- 7:55short or, you know, you make it, it's
- 7:57not like exactly traced, you can easily
- 7:59adjust that little mistake by just
- 8:01selecting the wall and just bringing it
- 8:03in. And you'll see that it like adjusts
- 8:05all of your uh dimensions and stuff with
- 8:08it so it's nice and clean. So, the next
- 8:10step would be to essentially do this
- 8:12around the entire drawing. So, I'm going
- 8:14to go ahead and do that and then we will
- 8:15meet back up to discuss the next step.
- 8:24[Music]
- 8:27So, now that we have all of our exterior
- 8:29walls traced, let's go ahead and just
- 8:31place an interior wall. And we'll just
- 8:33kind of zoom into this little space here
- 8:35to keep things nice and contained. But
- 8:37what I want to do is I want to again
- 8:39click on my wall tool and then ey drop
- 8:41my style. So, now we're going for the
- 8:43interior wall. And we are just going to
- 8:47draw the wall the same way that we did
- 8:48before. You can also do something like
- 8:52this. It just it's continuous which is
- 8:54really helpful and easily adjustable. So
- 8:57like if I you know want to make it a
- 8:58little bit bigger, you can also view the
- 9:00dimensions here. Um which makes space
- 9:02planning just super super easy. And then
- 9:05before we talk about how to add our
- 9:07zones, I do want to show you how to add
- 9:08in some openings. So that would be like
- 9:10windows or doors. So, just as an example
- 9:13here, let's go make sure that we're on
- 9:16openings over here. And then we'll click
- 9:18this opening button down here. And when
- 9:20we do that, it will bring up our library
- 9:22where we can just click or type in door
- 9:26and then like select door and then hit
- 9:28select. And what that will do is
- 9:30populate your cursor with the door. So,
- 9:32it's recognizing that like these are all
- 9:34walls. So, like you can snap to them.
- 9:36Uh, so I'm just going to snap here. And
- 9:38then you can also tell it which
- 9:39direction you want it to open. uh all
- 9:42that kind of good stuff. So that makes
- 9:44it really easy. You can also easily move
- 9:46it if you need to. And again, those
- 9:49dimensions all update with it. Next, to
- 9:51add in a window, if we go back to
- 9:53opening, and then click our active block
- 9:55over here, that will open up our library
- 9:57again. And then we can just type in
- 9:59window,
- 10:01click on one of these windows. There's
- 10:03all kinds of options in here. They have
- 10:05so many pre-made blocks that just make
- 10:06it so easy. So, you'll hit select. And
- 10:09then that will again populate your
- 10:10cursor. And then you can just place it
- 10:12wherever. Again, you need it to like
- 10:14show which way it's opening. You can do
- 10:16that. And then I'm just going to hit
- 10:17escape. And if we need to make it
- 10:20bigger, uh you can just stretch it out
- 10:22like that. And then the walls and the
- 10:25dimensions all update with it. So now
- 10:28once you have all of those openings in,
- 10:30we can start talking about zones. Zones
- 10:33are just a good way to identify
- 10:35different spaces within the space. So,
- 10:38it will basically recognize any enclosed
- 10:41space, even if you have openings like a
- 10:43door or a window or something. So, to
- 10:45place those, we're just going to click
- 10:46this little zone button down here. And
- 10:48you can see when I hover over a space,
- 10:50it kind of shows me like, okay, that's
- 10:51the zone. So, I just click to add the
- 10:54zone. Go down here, click to add the
- 10:56zone, and it automatically tells me the
- 10:58square footage as well. And then like I
- 11:00said, if you do adjust any of your
- 11:02walls, you can see how it's
- 11:03automatically updating those zone square
- 11:05footages. With that, as with the walls,
- 11:09changing the properties and the styles,
- 11:10we can do the same thing with our zones.
- 11:12So, if I just click on our zone here and
- 11:15go to our shapes, I can easily again
- 11:18change uh, you know, the hatch pattern
- 11:21or the texture. If you click on this
- 11:23like pattern here, you can do some more
- 11:25realistic stuff. You can also adjust the
- 11:28size and the opacity. So, you know,
- 11:30maybe you want this to be three times
- 11:32the size, but you want it to be a little
- 11:35bit, you know, more muted because it's a
- 11:37floor plan. Um, so that's kind of where
- 11:40you can adjust that stuff. And again, if
- 11:42you like that style, you can just save
- 11:43that style and it will save into your
- 11:45file. You can also adjust the text
- 11:48color, the text font. you know, if I
- 11:50wanted it to be red and I wanted it to
- 11:52be, you know, my brand font, that's
- 11:55where you change that. And then, similar
- 11:58to our picking the wall styles earlier,
- 12:00if you like this style, you can just
- 12:03select your other zone and then use your
- 12:06little picker and then it will apply
- 12:08that same style to whichever one you
- 12:10have chosen. Um, now you can still
- 12:12adjust the fill and all that kind of
- 12:14stuff, but it's nice that it can
- 12:16recognize the, you know, the color and
- 12:18the font and all that stuff that you've
- 12:19already done there. So, and then if you
- 12:22did happen to draw something on the
- 12:24wrong layer, like for instance, I, you
- 12:26know, added these zones on the opening
- 12:28layer, I'm just going to hold down shift
- 12:30and select them. And then over here, I'm
- 12:31going to put them on my annotations
- 12:33layer. Um, just to keep things nice and
- 12:35organized. Now, if you do have a space
- 12:38that's divided into different zones, but
- 12:39it's not divided by actual walls, you
- 12:41can just use this little zone divider
- 12:43tool over here, which will basically
- 12:44like slice the room in half or in, you
- 12:48know, wherever you draw that zone
- 12:49divider, and then it will literally
- 12:51create another zone for you. So, if I go
- 12:53down here to zone and then select on
- 12:55there, now I've got, you know, a whole
- 12:57new zone with its own square footage. I
- 13:00drop my style and then, um, you know,
- 13:03select a hatch if I want to. Let's just
- 13:06throw Yeah, let's throw that on there.
- 13:08Um maybe make it a little bit uh less
- 13:11opaque. And um that's kind of what that
- 13:15starts looking like. Lastly, I do want
- 13:17to show you how to add in a dimension.
- 13:19Um and I guess let's go ahead and hide
- 13:21all of our CAD stuff while we do that
- 13:22cuz there's already a lot of other
- 13:24dimensions happening there. So, I'm just
- 13:25selecting all of those and hiding those.
- 13:28And then right down here, we'll make
- 13:30sure that we're on our annotations
- 13:32layer. annotations. Make that the
- 13:34current layer. And then I'm just going
- 13:36to grab this dimension tool right here
- 13:37and just basically select the two points
- 13:40that I want to dimension and then drag
- 13:42that out. And again, with everything
- 13:44else in here, you can change the style,
- 13:46the text, the color, all that good
- 13:48stuff. And then if it's a style that you
- 13:50like, you would just hit save style and
- 13:51it will save it into your file. Now,
- 13:54obviously, I have quite a bit of work to
- 13:55do with my floor plan here, um, as far
- 13:58as like stylizing and, um, populating,
- 14:01but once you do everything that we
- 14:03talked about today, your floor plan
- 14:05should then start looking something like
- 14:07closer to this floor plan where, you
- 14:10know, we've got our hatched walls, we've
- 14:11got our openings, we've got our zones,
- 14:14we've got our dimensions, just a lot
- 14:16more going on, a lot more space
- 14:18populated. So, this is kind of what all
- 14:21of that work combined ends up looking
- 14:23like in the app. Today, we took the
- 14:25first step in building your professional
- 14:26drawing set. We imported an existing
- 14:28floor plan, organized our layers and
- 14:30canvases for speed and clarity, and
- 14:31transform that base file into a full
- 14:33construction plan. With this foundation
- 14:35in place, you'll find that a clean, well
- 14:37ststructured setup saves hours of rework
- 14:39and makes every sheet that you create
- 14:40from here on out faster and easier. In
- 14:43our next lesson, we will build off this
- 14:44groundwork by creating the next two
- 14:46sheets in our set. some of my favorites,
- 14:48furniture layouts and mood board finish
- 14:49plans that will really bring your design
- 14:51vision to life. If you haven't already,
- 14:52download the free drawing template
- 14:54below, open it in rayon, and follow
- 14:55along with one of your own projects. The
- 14:57more you practice this streamlined
- 14:58setup, the more second nature and speedy
- 15:00it becomes. If you found this lesson
- 15:02helpful at all, don't forget to like
