- 0:05Hi everyone. In this short tutorial, we
- 0:08will look at Google Meet from a
- 0:09teacher's point of view. What the main
- 0:11buttons do, how to manage learners, how
- 0:13to use chat, and how to share materials
- 0:15clearly and effectively.
- 0:18Once you're inside Google Meet, most of
- 0:20the basic functions live on the toolbar
- 0:21along the bottom.
- 0:23I e. here.
- 0:26If the toolbar disappears for any
- 0:27reason, just move your mouse over the
- 0:29Meet window and the controls will pop
- 0:31back up.
- 0:33So, first
- 0:34we have the microphone. This button
- 0:36mutes and unmutes you. As a teacher,
- 0:39you'll use this a lot, especially if
- 0:40there's background noise. So, for
- 0:42example, we have unmuted
- 0:46or mute
- 0:48and unmute.
- 0:53Yes?
- 0:55To set up your microphone, plug in your
- 0:57earphones or headset. In many cases,
- 0:59your computer switches automatically,
- 1:01but you can always check your settings,
- 1:03which are these three dots here under
- 1:04more options. You click on settings.
- 1:09And as you can see, we have settings for
- 1:11both audio and for video. And we have
- 1:15the microphone thing here.
- 1:18Yes?
- 1:20>> [snorts]
- 1:23>> Good.
- 1:25Before class starts, always double-check
- 1:27is my microphone on or off? The icon
- 1:30makes it clear. Like I said before, we
- 1:32have
- 1:33muted and unmute.
- 1:36Next is the camera. This turns your
- 1:38camera on or off.
- 1:41Before learners arrive, confirm your
- 1:42camera is in the right mode for your
- 1:44lesson. So, as you can see from my
- 1:46camera in Google Meets, it's off right
- 1:47now. If I click on on
- 1:51it will activate in the video in the
- 1:53right-hand corner.
- 1:59A quick teaching tip. Good lighting and
- 2:01a simple background make you easier to
- 2:03follow overall in an online class. So,
- 2:05make sure that you have good lighting
- 2:08and a nice clean background so your
- 2:10learners are not distracted while
- 2:11they're learning with you.
- 2:14Now, let's take a look at participants,
- 2:16which is in this button here under
- 2:17people.
- 2:19This is where you can see who's joined
- 2:20and manage entry if your meeting uses a
- 2:22waiting room. Now, for your online
- 2:25classes here, for your six teaching
- 2:26practices, we do use a waiting room for
- 2:29teaching on that day. So, they will pop
- 2:31up on the right-hand side here.
- 2:34At the start of the class, I recommend
- 2:36opening this panel to check who's in,
- 2:38who's waiting, and the names look
- 2:40correct for the class you're about to
- 2:41teach.
- 2:44Now, let's take a look at the chat
- 2:45option here.
- 2:47Chat is very useful for lesson
- 2:49management, i.e., you can give
- 2:50instructions through chats and links to
- 2:53activities in chat, um give answers to
- 2:56certain questions for activities or
- 2:58general questions in the class,
- 3:00and overall, it just helps manage your
- 3:02learners in a group environment. Now,
- 3:04your classes here will be one-to-one, so
- 3:07you mainly use the chat for delivering
- 3:10lesson-appropriate materials and
- 3:12guidance,
- 3:13but it's highly recommended that you do
- 3:14use it.
- 3:18For example, it looks like this.
- 3:25Okay.
- 3:31Now, let's take a look at the screen
- 3:33sharing option, which is in this button
- 3:35here. As you can see, it says that you
- 3:38are presenting, and you can see a
- 3:40PowerPoint slide or a Google Slides on
- 3:42my screen.
- 3:44If you click on this,
- 3:45you click present something else.
- 3:49You'll have three options here. We have
- 3:50the Chrome tab, the window, or the
- 3:53entire screen.
- 3:55Now, it's highly suggested that you just
- 3:56share something from a tab or a window,
- 3:59so you don't have to show anything
- 4:02to your learners that they don't need to
- 4:03see.
- 4:05Also, make sure if you are sharing audio
- 4:07or video
- 4:09materials, they have this slid on as it
- 4:12is here, so they can also hear the audio
- 4:14in the Google Meets itself.
- 4:17So, so for example, if I wanted to share
- 4:19something like
- 4:21this,
- 4:24it switches automatically to that tab.
- 4:27Now, if you I want to go back to my
- 4:29presentation here,
- 4:31you'll have an option here to share this
- 4:33tab instead. You click on that,
- 4:35and your learners see the presentation
- 4:37that you have made for your lesson.
- 4:40Now, one of the things that you can do
- 4:42to present lesson materials in an online
- 4:43class is to use a Google Docs, a blank
- 4:46Google Docs. So, if we switch here
- 4:49to the Google Docs,
- 4:51you can use this to take lesson notes
- 4:53throughout the class. So, for example,
- 4:54if you're introducing some of your
- 4:55target language, you can say
- 4:58um I don't know, street,
- 5:02journey,
- 5:06travel.
- 5:09And you can treat it as a whiteboard
- 5:11type situation for your class overall.
- 5:13It's great for adding engagement to your
- 5:15class overall and to introduce material
- 5:18in a controlled manner, so your learners
- 5:19don't get over overwhelmed by all this
- 5:21new information that you're giving them.
- 5:25Now, lastly,
- 5:29if you want to use a Google Docs and a
- 5:31presentation to present your lesson
- 5:32materials, you can also do that. As you
- 5:35can see, for one of the classes that
- 5:36I've given in the past, I have a Google
- 5:39Slides presentation for what we're
- 5:41doing.
- 5:42Um it's a nice way to present something
- 5:44that's engaging and fun for the learners
- 5:47and keeps everything nice and organized
- 5:49for you. So, all you have to do is move
- 5:51through
- 5:52the different slides without issue
- 5:56at all.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 6:00So, I hope this has been helpful in your
- 6:03online practices coming forward. And if
- 6:05you have any questions, please don't
- 6:07hesitate to ask. Thanks.
