  1. 0:00Today I'm going to look at crisscrossing
  2. 0:02front feet. Why are they criss-crossing?
  3. 0:04If you've got loads of cows in your herd
  4. 0:05that have got like curly crisscross and
  5. 0:08long front feet, then what's causing it?
  6. 0:10How do you fix it? And how do you go
  7. 0:12about trimming it? Well, it's pretty
  8. 0:14easy. Watch the video and find out. And
  9. 0:16hit the subscribe button.
  10. 0:20[music]
  11. 0:32[music]
  12. 0:37Okay, so here's cow 226,
  13. 0:40our victim for the day. As you can see
  14. 0:42here, her front feet are clearly
  15. 0:43overgrown. They're not totally
  16. 0:45ridiculously overgrown, but they're
  17. 0:46definitely needing attention. As she
  18. 0:49walks there, you can see the angle of
  19. 0:50her foot to the ankle is extremely poor
  20. 0:53which puts excess pressure on the deep
  21. 0:55flexor tendon which can cause all sorts
  22. 0:58of problems. Um here you can see they
  23. 1:00are actually crossing over which causes
  24. 1:02that horrible creaky here sometimes in
  25. 1:04cows and obviously the poor weight
  26. 1:06distribution can lead to ulceration and
  27. 1:08increased likelihood of white line
  28. 1:09problems because there's greater forces
  29. 1:12being put through them when they're
  30. 1:14turning and twisting.
  31. 1:15So now we've got our foot up. You can
  32. 1:17see there's a pretty substantial
  33. 1:18overgrowth, especially on this boot
  34. 1:20here. Um, it's curling in, but it's only
  35. 1:22curling because of the length. It's not
  36. 1:24twisting like quartz through claw. So,
  37. 1:26cork shoe claw would twist like this.
  38. 1:28The actual peel bone inside. Um, so
  39. 1:31we're just going to [music] start with a
  40. 1:32routine trim and then see if there's any
  41. 1:34problems. So, when you routine trim
  42. 1:36these, you might think, oh, it's a long
  43. 1:37foot. It's a long foot. We need to be
  44. 1:40careful because we don't can't take it
  45. 1:41back as far, but it is just the same
  46. 1:43same measurements. So 75 mm down this
  47. 1:45wall here which is the dorsal wall 7
  48. 1:49between 5 and 7 mm on the end of the toe
  49. 1:52for both and a good model out.
  50. 1:56[music]
  51. 2:09[music]
  52. 2:19[music]
  53. 2:24[music]
  54. 2:26Heat. Heat.
  55. 2:31[music]
  56. 2:36[music]
  57. 2:41[music]
  58. 2:47Heat up here.
  59. 2:50[music]
  60. 3:02[music]
  61. 3:10Heat up here.
  62. 3:16[music]
  63. 3:21[music]
  64. 3:26[music]
  65. 3:34[music]
  66. 3:36Heat
  67. 3:38[music] up
  68. 3:40here.
  69. 3:44[music]
  70. 3:52Heat
  71. 4:03[music] up
  72. 4:05here.
  73. 4:08[music]
  74. 4:16[music]
  75. 4:20[music]
  76. 4:30[music]
  77. 4:39[music]
  78. 4:46[music]
  79. 4:47So, we've taken the majority off. Um, I
  80. 4:49have skimmed across this heel, but only
  81. 4:51to make sure that there was nothing um,
  82. 4:53hiding underneath. I could take that
  83. 4:55farther back if I wanted to, but I'm not
  84. 4:56going to because I want more weight to
  85. 4:58be on this this heel here rather than
  86. 5:01the usual dominant claw. So, we'll just
  87. 5:03check the length.
  88. 5:06Yeah, it's spot on. About 5 mil. Yep.
  89. 5:11And I've [music] modeled it initially
  90. 5:12with the grinder, but we're just going
  91. 5:14to finish off with the knife now.
  92. 5:19[music]
  93. 5:23There's no there's no excess around the
  94. 5:26heel. So, yeah, that's us pretty much
  95. 5:28done. This here [music] is called pith.
  96. 5:30And [snorts] uh it's basically where the
  97. 5:32horn is shedding away from the sole cuz
  98. 5:34it's fairly dry where these cows are.
  99. 5:36And naturally in the wild, the cow's
  100. 5:39soul would
  101. 5:41stop the [music] cow's soul would shed
  102. 5:42away. Um so that's basically what's
  103. 5:44happening here. And really, you could
  104. 5:46take it down past the bit here, but
  105. 5:48we're not going to cuz I want more
  106. 5:50height on that. Okay, so here's cow 226,
  107. 5:53[music]
  108. 5:53fresh from her pedicura. Not that she
  109. 5:55wanted it, I don't think. As you can see
  110. 5:58straight away, her feet are much more
  111. 6:00natural [music] looking. Um, they've
  112. 6:02returned perfectly to where they should
  113. 6:05be, [music] the right proportions. Um,
  114. 6:07hopefully you'll see that the foot is a
  115. 6:10much much better angle compared to what
  116. 6:12it was before. It's far more acute. So
  117. 6:14the the pressure is [music] going
  118. 6:15straight down through her foot as it
  119. 6:17should have been, relieving that
  120. 6:18pressure off the deep [music] flexor
  121. 6:20tendon and hopefully alleviating her of
  122. 6:22any sort of problems she might have got
  123. 6:25from ulceration and reducing the risk of
  124. 6:27white line [music] problems. Anyway,
  125. 6:30happy cow, happy me.
  126. 6:35So we've trimmed them up. We know what
  127. 6:37the problem is and [music] we know how
  128. 6:39to fix it. But where does the problem
  129. 6:41come from and why does it happen to
  130. 6:44cows? How can you prevent it? Here is
  131. 6:46exactly what we're talking about. So
  132. 6:48these cows are obviously being fed TMR
  133. 6:50and there's no um bucket bin basin
  134. 6:54trough for the sus to sit in. So they're
  135. 6:57reaching and you can see here for
  136. 7:00instance this cow's reached a good sort
  137. 7:02of maybe just over a meter to where
  138. 7:05she's wanting to eat. So, she's spplay
  139. 7:07on her front feet and pushing pushing
  140. 7:09pushing as hard as she can [music] to
  141. 7:11try and reach the TMR that she's after.
  142. 7:14And this pushing little joke, this
  143. 7:17pushing causes excess growth on the toe,
  144. 7:20but it also causes excess wear on the
  145. 7:22heel because they're splaying their feet
  146. 7:24out like this. So, they're pushing like
  147. 7:25that. So, the obvious solution is push
  148. 7:28the silage in more. The more you push
  149. 7:30your silage in, the less they're going
  150. 7:32to be fighting for it, the less they're
  151. 7:33going to be splitting those front
  152. 7:34[music] feet, and the less growth you're
  153. 7:36going to see on those toes. Like I said
  154. 7:38earlier,
  155. 7:40it doesn't always involve lameness. It
  156. 7:41looks [music] unsightly. When when you
  157. 7:43hear creeks, a lot of the time that's
  158. 7:45what's causing it, but it can definitely
  159. 7:47lead to lameness because of the uneven
  160. 7:50weight distribution between the two
  161. 7:52claws. you're going to get [music]
  162. 7:53ulcers, um, white line cracks because
  163. 7:56the feet are now more susceptible to
  164. 7:58twists and turns because of the uneven
  165. 8:00weight distribution. So, do yourself a
  166. 8:02favor, either get troughs, which are a
  167. 8:04bugger to clean out, or push your silage
  168. 8:06in as regularly as you can. [snorts]
  169. 8:10Cheers.
