Trapped On The Roof Until Day 60 | Zombie Outbreak Ep. 2 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:0030 days ago, the city fell. You are on
- 0:03the roof of your tower, 34 floors up,
- 0:05sitting on the only way in. 5,000
- 0:08gallons of water in the tank behind you,
- 0:112 days of food, and your flat, four
- 0:13floors down, is full of them. On the
- 0:16bank roof across the street, somebody
- 0:18finished a message last night. Do not
- 0:20trust the radio. And the radio is still
- 0:23talking.
- 0:24>> The stadium is safe. Come on foot. Bring
- 0:27nothing.
- 0:28>> She has wanted to go since day 15.
- 0:33At dawn, the figure on the bank roof is
- 0:35back, alive, and doing exactly what it
- 0:39did before, pointing at its own ear,
- 0:42then at you, then at its ear again. You
- 0:45look at the radio, then at the hatch,
- 0:48and you finally run the experiment you
- 0:50should have run 2 weeks ago. Volume all
- 0:52the way up, radio on the hatch, and you
- 0:55count. 90 seconds. Then the hatch jumps
- 0:58under four concrete blocks. Now, look at
- 1:01the old numbers again. The hallway did
- 1:03not fill up by accident. Every night you
- 1:06sat listening for news of the stadium,
- 1:08you were ringing the dinner bell
- 1:09yourself. That is what the ear meant.
- 1:12They can hear your radio.
- 1:15She does not say anything for a long
- 1:17time. Then she takes the batteries out.
- 1:21Day 32.
- 1:23The tins are gone, and the water turns
- 1:25on you.
- 1:26By noon, she is doubled over beside the
- 1:28tank. That tank was built to fight
- 1:30fires, not to drink from. It has stood
- 1:33under the birds for years. Water like
- 1:36that needs a full rolling boil, 1 minute
- 1:38before it is safe. To boil water, you
- 1:41need fire. Up here, there is gravel,
- 1:43steel, and wind. The camping stove is
- 1:46exactly where you left it on day 15, in
- 1:49your kitchen, with them.
- 1:52So, you use the one thing you have just
- 1:55learned. If the radio pulls them toward
- 1:57you, it can pull them away. You tie it
- 1:59to the old bucket rope and every cable
- 2:01on the roof. Turn it up and lower it
- 2:04down the outside of the building, past
- 2:06your windows, past floor 25, down to 20.
- 2:10Inside, they follow it down the stairs
- 2:13one floor at a time toward a calm voice
- 2:15telling them the stadium is safe. Then,
- 2:18you go back down the shaft. Three points
- 2:20of contact, four floors, into your own
- 2:23bathroom, your flat. The door is off its
- 2:26hinge. The couch is across the room. It
- 2:29smells like the hallway now. Shoes off.
- 2:31Rule one still applies. The stove, three
- 2:35gas canisters, the big pot, salt, and a
- 2:38reel of fishing line you forgot you
- 2:40owned. One of them did not follow the
- 2:42radio. It is standing in the kitchen
- 2:44doorway with its back to you. Flat cap,
- 2:47bandaged arm, he is still facing the
- 2:49place where your front door used to be.
- 2:51You go around him 1 in at a time. It
- 2:54takes 11 minutes to cross your own
- 2:56kitchen. That night, on the roof, you
- 2:59finally light it. Rule three said no
- 3:01flame in a sealed room. Out here, there
- 3:04is nothing but sky. Boiled water. She
- 3:07keeps it down.
- 3:10Water is solved again for as long as the
- 3:12gas lasts.
- 3:14Food has been gone for 4 days.
- 3:16The pigeons come back to the tank every
- 3:18evening.
- 3:19On day 28, you said you were not there
- 3:21yet. You are there. A crate, a stick, a
- 3:25length of fishing line, and the last
- 3:27crumbs from the bottom of the bag. The
- 3:29oldest trap there is. You lie flat for 2
- 3:32hours. Then, you pull. One pigeon is
- 3:36about 250 calories. Cook it all the way
- 3:39through. City birds carry everything.
- 3:42Two birds each on a good day, a quarter
- 3:45of what a body needs. And there is a
- 3:47trap inside the trap. Lean meat alone
- 3:50will not keep you alive. Without fat or
- 3:52starch, the body starts to fail even on
- 3:55a full stomach.
- 3:57So, you talk to the only neighbor you
- 3:59have left. Paint, 3 m tall. One word.
- 4:04Food? The answer takes an hour. The
- 4:06figure drags something to the middle of
- 4:08the roof and tips it out. Boxes, tins,
- 4:12hundreds. The bank had a staff canteen.
- 4:15Then, a second word in white paint and
- 4:17an empty bottle held upside down. Water.
- 4:20You have 5,000 gallons and nothing to
- 4:22eat. She has a canteen and nothing to
- 4:25drink, and there is a street between
- 4:27you.
- 4:29The bank roof is 60 m away and 28 floors
- 4:32below you. Nobody can throw a rope 60 m,
- 4:36but this problem was solved in 1848.
- 4:39The first line across the Niagara Gorge
- 4:41was carried over by a boy with a kite.
- 4:44Up here, you have a tarpaulin, two
- 4:46curtain rods, a reel of fishing line,
- 4:48and a wind that never stops. The first
- 4:50kite dives straight into the street. The
- 4:53second one flies. You let the line out
- 4:55until the kite hangs over the bank roof.
- 4:58Then, you spill the wind out of it. She
- 5:00catches it with both hands.
- 5:03Fishing line pulls string. String pulls
- 5:06washing line. Washing line pulls rope.
- 5:09By day 44, there is a loop running roof
- 5:12to roof, like a clothesline between two
- 5:14windows. Water goes down by gravity, 5
- 5:17gallons a trip. Food comes up by hand.
- 5:2128 floors of rope for every bag. 20 days
- 5:24of food. Beans, rice, tinned fat. You
- 5:27have never been so happy to see beans.
- 5:30In the third bag, there is a note. Real
- 5:33handwriting. Her name is Inez. She
- 5:36cleaned the bank at night. She has been
- 5:37alone since day two. You write back. For
- 5:41the first time in 44 days, there are
- 5:43three of you.
- 5:46On day 50, you ask the question you have
- 5:48both been avoiding.
- 5:50What happened at the stadium?
- 5:52The answer comes up in the next bag. She
- 5:54was there.
- 5:55It fell on day 12. 10,000 people, one
- 5:59loudspeaker system, and every dead thing
- 6:02in the city walking toward the noise.
- 6:04The message you heard was recorded on
- 6:06day 10. Nobody has been alive to switch
- 6:08it off. It is still calling them. And it
- 6:12is still calling survivors. That is what
- 6:15she was trying to paint. The day
- 6:16something came up her stairs.
- 6:19She reads the note twice. Then, she
- 6:21folds it very small.
- 6:24The nights are colder now. And every pot
- 6:27of safe water costs gas.
- 6:29One canister left. About 12 days of
- 6:32drinking water. There is a way to clean
- 6:34water with no fuel at all. Clear plastic
- 6:37bottles laid in full sun for 6 hours.
- 6:40Two days if it is cloudy. So, the sunny
- 6:42side of the roof becomes a field of
- 6:44bottles. And every night something still
- 6:47knocks on the hatch from below.
- 6:49Once.
- 6:50As if it is checking.
- 6:53The radio has been hanging at floor 20
- 6:55for 3 weeks. On day 58, she pulls it up
- 6:58and asks you for 1 minute. She kept one
- 7:01set of batteries. Volume at one. Ear
- 7:04against the speaker. The loop is still
- 7:07running.
- 7:07>> The stadium is safe. Come on foot. Bring
- 7:11nothing.
- 7:13>> On day 60, at 4:00 in the morning, the
- 7:16loop stops in the middle of a word.
- 7:18Silence.
- 7:19Then, breathing.
- 7:21Then, a new voice.
- 7:23Live.
- 7:24>> To the two people on the tower roof with
- 7:26the white paint. We can see you. Stay
- 7:29where you are. We are coming.
- 7:31>> Across the street, a lamp comes on. Ines
- 7:34is painting. Fast. Bigger than she has
- 7:37ever painted. One word. Hide.
