- 0:00everything you do every choice you make
- 0:03every decision in your training room
- 0:05should be about how does this improve
- 0:09the learning it's the only reason to do
- 0:11anything once you walk through that door
- 0:13whether it's drawing pictures using
- 0:15humor getting people to do activities
- 0:17asking questions everything is about
- 0:20supporting the learning of your group
- 0:22there's nothing else that's
- 0:24important the reason I say it's quite
- 0:26difficult sometimes to get general
- 0:27principles is I find the more reading I
- 0:29do the these days about
- 0:31learning the more confusing the whole
- 0:33thing gets because you come across a lot
- 0:37of things like talk about learning
- 0:38styles I'll talk about learning styles
- 0:40in a while I don't talk about learning
- 0:41styles anymore um because you learning
- 0:44styles were the big thing at some point
- 0:45everyone everyone sort of comes along
- 0:47and suddenly think oh learning styles
- 0:48people learn in all sorts of different
- 0:49ways that's
- 0:50interesting every model of learning
- 0:52styles you'll ever come across there
- 0:54will be somebody saying it's rubbish
- 0:56that don't take any notes of
- 0:58that and there's a whole IND now grown
- 1:00up almost challenging every model of
- 1:03learning style somebody will take it
- 1:05apart and say well where's the basis for
- 1:06that no scientific basis you can get to
- 1:08a point where you're just so confused
- 1:10think well I don't know what to do how
- 1:11does this make any sense so I'm just
- 1:13going to stick to what I think a fairly
- 1:15practical things have generally accepted
- 1:17and said what does that mean for you as
- 1:19trainers there's a huge amount of
- 1:21Interest these days in like I said brain
- 1:23friendly learning and
- 1:26Neuroscience and some of that is very
- 1:28useful and helpful some of it isn't some
- 1:32of it again if you look through some of
- 1:33the forums on LinkedIn there's a lot of
- 1:36discussion about development in
- 1:37neuroscience and different parts of the
- 1:39brain and what they do my question is
- 1:41always how does that help me in a
- 1:43practical sense I'm only interested in
- 1:45that if it makes a difference what I can
- 1:48do in a training room and help people to
- 1:50learn more effectively I don't care that
- 1:52you we the Corpus coloss is or what oh
- 1:55how that all the frontal loes
- 1:57particularly I'm not going to be a brain
- 1:59surgeon I'm a trainer I just want people
- 2:01to learn more effectively so is that
- 2:03telling me something that's of practical
- 2:05value and sometimes it isn't and one of
- 2:07the reasons I like the cold cycle still
- 2:10is that it's useful for Designing
- 2:12training so a simple way to design
- 2:14effective training is to try and see if
- 2:16you've got all four parts of that cycle
- 2:18built into your training session or
- 2:20training event whatever it is so you've
- 2:23got to build in some sort of experience
- 2:25that people are doing the thing that
- 2:26you're talking about if possible the
- 2:29youve got to reflect on it You' got some
- 2:32time for reflection some time to sort of
- 2:34form theories and connections and think
- 2:36about how that works and some time to
- 2:39plan and think what does that mean for
- 2:40me what am I going to do differently
- 2:41next time all your training I would
- 2:44suggest is about changing people's
- 2:47behavior training I'll come back to this
- 2:49when we talk about content training is
- 2:51not about giving people
- 2:54information it's about what they do with
- 2:56that information how does it
- 2:58change their behavior if it's not going
- 3:00to change your behavior why do they need
- 3:01the information everything of value that
- 3:04happens again write this down this is
- 3:06important um CU because I might forget
- 3:08it again um and I want to put in my next
- 3:10book every everything of value that
- 3:13happens in the training room happens in
- 3:15your learner
- 3:17heads all the internal processes that's
- 3:19where the learning takes place it's not
- 3:22to do with what you're doing you you do
- 3:25what you do to set up that internal
- 3:27process and that's what's Happening Here
- 3:29all this needs to be going on in their
- 3:32heads the times at which you step step
- 3:35back stop talking stop giving them stuff
- 3:39and let them do that reflection is where
- 3:41all that's where the money is if you
- 3:43like that's that's where all the
- 3:44important work is going on lots of
- 3:47different ways you can use this speech
- 3:49bubble out of
- 3:50here thought bubble here God I because I
- 3:54can't use it anymore now because
- 3:56everybody's going to use it and people
- 3:57be going no we've seen that
- 4:00I've used this for lots of things he's
- 4:02saying something she's thinking
- 4:03something so introducing lots of
- 4:05things yesterday I was doing this course
- 4:08on sucessful meetings um so I had person
- 4:10was saying I don't feel like doing any
- 4:12work today I think I'll call a meeting
- 4:14and she's thinking oh
- 4:16great or I've done ones on performance
- 4:19appraisals Performance Management where
- 4:21he's saying something oh it's time for
- 4:22your annual review and she's thinking oh
- 4:24great another waste of time or something
- 4:27like that then you can use that for
- 4:28multiple
- 4:31things or delegation oh I've just left a
- 4:34file on your desk and she's thinking
- 4:36actually she always seems to be thinking
- 4:38oh great
- 4:40but what an idiot so you're just right
- 4:43what an idiot in this one and he can be
- 4:45saying almost anything basically um and
- 4:48she could be thinking I don't know why I
- 4:50married you in the first place
